You are Captain Kusajishi Riku of the Shiba Clan, and today is proving to be a good day so far. In training several of the Soul Society's Lieutenant-class fighters you've learned that the Gotei 13 may be in better shape than you'd thought. Though many of your students have fairly basic problems with form and technique they seem willing to learn, even driven to do so. And out of all the students you've seen it's the drive to improve that most often catches your eye.

You had that characteristic yourself back in the day, more so than anyone you've met since: an absolutely undeniable force pushing you to ever-greater heights in all of the shinigami combat arts. In your old friends Kai and Kaoru you found similar drive, one of whom has since become a Captain and the other is your seniormost Commando... very nearly Captain material himself. The children you adopted out of the Rukongai have it as well, Gin having made Captain some fifty years ago and Rangiku remaining your Lieutenant despite being nearly Gin's equal in all respects. It's not for a lack of drive, of course. She's right where she wants to be.

Over the years a series of Commandos have gone through your Division and subsequently become Lieutenants in their own right, their ambition having led them out of Ninth and elsewhere. Tetsuzaemon is still serving well under Captain Komamura, and Shūhei is now Suí Fēng's Lieutenant in what you feel is actually a fairly good match. Sadly Ichinose is still missing, only to be presumed dead at this point.

You suppose his story should be considered more typical, in a sense. All stories end at some point, and if he truly is gone than he simply met his final chapter first out of all of you. A shame, really, but someone had to be the first.

Less depressing are your two newest additions: Mirai has grown strong since you singled her out in her academy days, and her old injury is less a hindrance now with the help of Urahara's inventions. Still the quietest member of your Division by far, but never what you'd consider depressing or gloomy. There's nothing wrong with keeping your thoughts to yourself so long as your actions still speak as loudly as hers do.

As for Kuchiki Rukia... she's still comparatively new at this, having only been a Commando for forty-three years. Unlike many of the others you've selected for such duty she was never considered exceptional, aside from her relation to Kuchiki Hisana and therefore the Clan head Byakuya. Had he his way Rukia would probably have had zero practical experience, her growth stunted by years spent deliberately sidelined for political reasons. But she has proven to be a bright student and a quick learner, and her skill at kidō has so far as you can tell been closer to Hinamori's than Renji's for years.
>1/2
>>
>>1323833
But you're not Yoruichi, and Rukia isn't you. She has no instincts from her previous life to draw on, and you can't afford to let her risk her life on training because she bears the name of a noble Clan instead of a slum district. And quite honestly where Yoruichi wanted you to some day stand at her side, and where you had the same hopes for Gin and Rangiku, Rukia has always been in a different category. While you would be happy to see her succeed as you would be with any of your other Commandos, her trajectory was more up to her. You're in the business of providing a place and an opportunity, not instilling within her any extraordinary drive or zeal.

It just took her forty-three years of slow improvement to reach a place in her growth and a point in her life where she could find the same sort of determination others before her have had, and meeting Kurosaki Ichigo seems to have been that point.

Since then she's seemed increasingly frustrated with what she perceives as deficiencies, despite the fact that by any objective measure she's stronger than any Third Seat has a right to be. And even more recently she's found something of more practical use to go along with it: a good sparring partner.

In Tatsuki she's found something of a friend and a kindred spirit, someone similarly troubled by the fact that she doesn't measure up to the strongest person she knows and whose training has focused for years not just on self-improvement but cooperative training with a partner. After a brief period of bickering they seemed to settle into a productive routine, with Rukia pushing Tatsuki to apply her zanpakuto's unnatural abilities in creative and useful ways while Tatsuki pushed Rukia to shore up her decent but unamazing skills at hakuda.

Now they both stand before you, ready for a fight.

“Well now,” you muse, stretching your shoulders. “Let's take this somewhere else, shall we?”

Your hirenkyaku carries you the short distance from the garden to the clear training field in a single step, leaving Rukia and Tatsuki to play catch-up. One arrives with a quiet shunpō, the other with... something else. Both have swords drawn.

Instead of starting at full strength you simply pull Tenkotsuki and her sheath free of your sash and draw her blade, standing ready to observe how these two try to engage with you. Rukia stands directly in front of you while Tatsuki eyes you carefully, then starts circling to your left side. Eventually she stops, at about a ninety degree angle... this way at least one of them will always be at your flank while neither will ever be attacking directly towards the other.

The Lieutenants watch curiously for a moment as the proverbial pieces all fall in place. Then Renji opens his mouth. “So are you going to...”

Rukia leads with her zanpakuto raised, clashing with Tenkotsuki for a moment while looking for a way to bind your blade and leave you open for Tatsuki to attack your left side. Instead of waiting for that to happen you pivot, moving to Rukia's left and putting yourself just a little further from Tatsuki and complicating her approach.

Tatsuki and Rukia move at the same time after that, Rukia backstepping as Tatsuki moves even further to your left and closes with you. Tenkotsuki's sheath connects with her right wrist and you use a sweeping left kick to force her to back off.

“Byakurai!” Rukia shouts, firing her Kidō past your face as you turn your body out of the way, harnessing your momentum to sweep down at her with Tenkotsuki's edge. But the Commando has already moved, rejoining Tatsuki a few paces away as you land lightly on your toes.

“Not bad,” you comment. “You're moving a lot quicker, and neither of you has overcommitted yet. It's clear you've actually started thinking while you fight.”

“I was hoping to find a clearer opening,” Rukia frowns, raising her blade again. “But I suppose it is to be expected that a Captain would leave few openings if any.”

“Dance,” she proclaims, her zanpakuto turning pale and surrounding her with a cold aura, “Sode no Shirayuki!”

“This is the part I've been looking forward to,” Tatsuki admits, holding her own zanpakuto out in front of her. “Pummel, Tōōkenju!”

“That human girl has shikai?” Kira frowns as he watches the two fighters enter readied stances. “Impossible... not one but two substitutes?”

At least in the anime, Rukia had more reishi than certain redhead. The fact she depowered so much is because of two bastards plans. One made her transfer most of her power to Strawberry and the other put her in a deadtrap that would turn her human at the cost of her power.

So really considering the different background, Rukia should be way stronger than certain muscle head redhead.

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki!” you reply, releasing your own zanpakuto intent on meeting them head to head.

To your surprise Rukia leaps into action with a flash step, moving as if to set up Tsukishiro, a familiar technique. However instead of releasing the technique she pauses even as you backstep clear of its radius, and it's Tatsuki who swoops in with the real attack. Her fist meets your sword as you raise it to parry and Rukia lightly scores the ground with Sode no Shirayuki's point, then raises it towards you.

But as you try and evade you find yourself stopped by an unexpected hitch: Tenkotsuki refuses to separate from Tatsuki's knuckles, as if glued there by some invisible force.

“Magnetism!?” Tenkotsuki realizes inside your mind as you release your grasp on her hilt.

“Hakuren!” Rukia calls out, a wave of icy reiatsu erupting from Sode no Shirayuki's point right through the space where you had been standing. Ice clings to your left leg as you just can't quite get clear fast enough, having hesitated ever so slightly over the decision to leave Tenkotsuki behind.

You tumble across the ground inelegantly, throwing your entire body weight into it as you pull hard on the reishi chain you left attached to Tenkotsuki's hilt. Tatsuki yelps as the force finally pries the blade free, and it spins wildly through the air and back into your hand as you roll to your knee several yards away from either of your opponents.

Both girls eye you warily, working their way to either side of you as you rise to your feet and shatter the thin layer of ice around your ankle.

“You very nearly had me with that,” you admit with a wicked grin. “Rukia, good job setting up your shikai techniques quicker... you're on the right track. And Tatsuki, you just concentrated your body's own magnetic properties? In a spiritual form it has no drawbacks I guess, so good thinking.”

“That's absurd,” Kira mutters, still staring at the scene. “Kuchiki I could understand being decently strong... but these two actually have Captain Kusajishi on her back foot!”

“Well then,” you continue, ignoring Kira's running commentary... at least for the time being. “Let's see how you handle going on the defensive!”

so, i'm starting to get a little confused what the heck Tatsuki's sword is actually supposed to do? because so far we've seen her go insubstantial, start fucking around with magnets, and it gives her instinctive fighting knowledge. is there some theme i'm missing, or does she just kinda have a grab bag of powers?

“Hadō 33: Shakkahō!” you declare, sending a massive but slow ball of red reiatsu at Tatsuki and charging behind it with utsusuemi. Rukia strikes the clone where you had been standing, only to find that you've already moved on to attack Tatsuki as she finishes using that rapid movement technique of hers to dodge it.

You swing Tenkotsuki at her left shoulder, checking the motion ever so slightly near the end so that it won't leave too serious a wound if she can't dodge. Instead of avoiding the blade however Tatsuki raises her fist to block its edge with those iron knuckles of hers, again wedging the blade in place with one hand and lowering her right fist for a shot at your gut.

But you're already exploiting her mistake, pulling Tenkotsuki away and to the right while driving your left knee into her exposed ribs as she tries to strike. The blow sends her reeling despite her attempt to shift her concentration towards defending herself there, hardening the body around the point of impact in exchange for releasing your blade. You rotate and follow through with a flowing circular parry to divert Sode no Shirayuki's blade and in a moment of vulnerability you use an Oni Flick to blasé Rukia back off her feet before she can use another technique.

“Hadō 57: Daichi Tenyō!” you declare, following up as Rukia and Tatsuki reorient themselves and begin to recover. The barrage of loose rocks and clouds of dirt force both fighters to parry and counter, smashing each projectile as they're pelted by fragments... giving you just enough time to continue your relentless assault by tracing a series of circles across the ground with your footwork.

“Renkan Seppa Sen!”

After the dust clears you find booth fighters lying spreadeagle on their backs. Tatsuki is the first to rise, coughing, as if just having nearly drowned.

“God, it got in my mouth!” she protests. “Damn sand, now I feel all itchy!”

“Focus on the task at hand,” Rukia advises, dusting herself off. “The Captain is graciously allowing us a moment to recover and find our footing.”

“Just tryin' to lighten the mood,” Tatsuki grumbles. “Still such a buzz-kill.”

“So far all you've done is show me old techniques you've improved,” you tell them as the powerful cyclone of reiatsu tears at their outfits like a fresh gale. “Tatsuki's single property at a time, Rukia's shikai techniques, it's all familiar to me by now. But if you really want to get better you have to do more than hone... you have to strive to create new techniques, to apply your skills more effectively, to break what you thought were your own limits!”

“If you've got something new then now's the time!”

Tatsuki and Rukia exchange a worried glance, then Rukia sighs. “I was truly hoping not to use this until I had to.”

“Same,” Tatsuki nods for emphasis. “But I guess you really want us to try and kill you. I just hope you're ready. Neither of us have used these techniques in a fight yet.”

With a cry of exertion, Tatsuki forces almost all of her reiatsu into her hands and feet, building it up so densely there that it becomes visible in a golden-yellow aura that flickers wildly. She charges you, throwing a rapid-fire series of punches as Rukia assumes a stance behind her. So this is Tatsuki's equivalent to shunkō, and she intends to give Rukia a shot at using a new technique with Sode no Shirayuki? It certainly seems that way, as even despite its crude form and obvious weaknesses Tatsuki's not doing half badly, and behind her Rukia is gathering and compressing ice from around the battlefield along the length of her blade. Had she bound you at first with bakudō she could probably have taken a shot at it just by herself, and in any other battle she would probably have to do just that.

“Shi no Mae,” she declares as Tatsuki sidesteps to your left to give her a clear shot. “Hakushi!”

A single, heavily compressed spear of ice lances out from her blade with surprising speed, the force causing Rukia herself to stagger backwards as the recoil pushes against her small frame. It's not fast enough to really hit you though, and so you can dodge it...

… only to find it protruding through your stomach by about an inch, just to the left of your navel.

Tatsuki snagged the projectile out of the air with a speed and force that seems to have ever surprised herself, a burst of speed you hadn't thought her capable of. It's a respectable effort even by her standards... and then the spear suddenly decompresses. Your own reiatsu and blut limit the effect but the pain of having a spear of ice literally expanding inside its own wound channel is almost indescribable.

You even grunt a little bit out of reflex as Tatsuki yelps in shock at what she's just done.

“Ow,” you grumble, clutching your side.

Rukia stares at you, wide-eyed in fear as if she's just done an unspeakable crime. “Ow!? That's all you have to say!?”

“Kai and Mirai have done worse,” you shrug... and it's actually a fair point. Mirai's shikai in particular has left you with the odd broken bone after sparring for decades now.

“I... just shanked you?” Tatsuki muses, glancing down at her own hands. “The fuck was that!?”

Language, young lady!” you roar, kicking her in the face. She raises her hands to block and instead of being knocked out is sent flying until she lands on her head in the sand.

“As for you!” you round on Rukia, hirenkyaku allowing you to take her back and grab her in a headlock that she struggles vainly to break free from as your fist meets the crown of her head. “You should know the rules... you stain my haori you get to wash it out!”

“Are you seeing what I'm seeing?” Renji mutters in something like disbelief.

To be able to irradiate someone she'd have to have been badly enough irradiated herself that it'd be a suicidal technique. By concentrating all of the low-intensity magnetic properties in her body into one very small spot on the other hand she was able to temporarily bind a metallic object to that spot.
>>
>>1324541
but if that's how it works, shouldn't concentrating all the magnetic properties in her body ripped out all of her blood, or at least caused serious problems by temporarily stopping her bloodflow while her heart's still trying to pump? because shinigami still have blood and organs, for some reason

But she could concentrate all heat on her fists and remove all heat from her feet without harming herself while giving her enemies the worst of flash cooking, flash freezing and thermal shock?

Also I'm guessing she's moving rapidly with mass redistribution, which she could combine with shunpo in a multiplicative manner to reach captain-tier speeds while being lieutenant-tier or less?

Also also heat is a form of electromagnetic radiation, as is light, electricity, nuclear radiation and every other photon-based, wave-particle duality-expressing particle, differentiated only by wavelength, which is an alterable variable, which means she could glow, electrocute, be invisible, etc.

And don't even get me started on altering the vibrational frequency of her molecules directly. She could fucking create something out of nothing like that, possibly.

Someone get a quantum physicist in here, I want to know how we can get this chick to deicide-capable levels.

I think the basic gist is whatever is inside Tatsuki's body and all the properties associated with it is her territory and she has absolute control over it literally and figuratively.
>>
>also, writing
>>
>>1324687
I mean, even if the limits to control are just what she can touch and what's in her body, she's already straight-up godlike. She can rearrange magnetic qualities and corporeality (which i assume would be the space between atoms to let her move between solid objects). So she can probably split and rearrange the molecules that make up her structure, meaning without even studying molecular chemistry she can do things like mimic Greed's ability from FMA. Teach her some biology and chemistry, and she should be able to make her brain process infinitely quickly, give total immunity to any attack sent her way by filling her body with a neutralizing force, and other bullshit like that

“The two of you have earned a break,” you sigh, taking a knee for a moment and seeing to your wound. “So Rukia, take this haori to be mended and fetch one of my spares. Then you can both take the afternoon off if you'd like.”

“As for the rest of you?” you continue, tossing off your haori and setting to work knitting the wound shut with your modest kaidō abilities, “what are you all standing around for? Kira, stop making smartass remarks and get ready to fight me.”

As your wound closes, you have a devious thought. “Scratch that. Kira, release your zanpakuto.”

He does as you order just as you finish treating yourself, feeling just a little tired after the fight before which led to it being inflicted on you. “Now hand me Wabisuke.”

“Are you going to do what I think...”

“Yes,” you grin as he passes the handle of his zanpakuto into your hands, and you smack him over the head with it once.

“This is what your ability feels like just having been used once,” you confirm. “How much do you weigh?”

“Fifty-six kilograms,” he grunts.

“Then this is what fifty-six extra kilograms feels like,” you continue before striking him a second time for good measure. “And this is what four times your weight feels like, or one hundred and sixty-eight extra kilograms.”

“So... now what?” Kira grunts again.

“Now we do some calisthenics!” you reply in a sickeningly enthusiastic tone. “Should be a nice, easy start-up for you Lieutenants, right?”

“Easy enough for us” Renji smirks before you whack him over the head with Wabisuke in reproach.

“Now, jumping jacks!”

“This is actually kind of a nice workout!” Renji declares, working up a nice sweat. “Is there a way to add more weight?”

“This is for the cheek,” you explain, jabbing him in the gut with the outside of Wabisuke's crook.

“Thanks!” he grunts as Kira slowly plods along, both Lieutenants' pace dramatically slower than they should be. It seems like working out at four times their own bodyweight is a novel experience more than a concern to them, thus proving your point.

“You're taking quite well to this!” you commend them, tapping Hinamori twice as well and Omaeda once. “It''s almost like for spiritual beings whose physical strength is totally disproportionate to their body mass a little extra mass doesn't actually do as much as you'd think it would!”

“Hey wait, why'd you only tap me once, Captain?” Omaeda asks, pointing at himself in confusion.

“Because tapping you once is about the same absolute amount of weight as tapping Renji or Kira twice,” you explain, doing everything but outright calling him fat.

But it seems the Lieutenant is undeterred. “Come on, Captain Kusajishi! I'm a big guy, I can handle it!”

Reluctantly, you add another six hundred pounds or so to Omaeda's weight... practically immobilizing him. To his credit he keeps trying to do the jumping jacks with his peers, but out of context you'd call the results pretty pathetic.

“I can do a bit more,” Kira insists with a loud grunt of exertion, glaring across at Renji's self-satisfied smirk. “Hit me again, Captain.”

A competitive spirit at last? Well, you're fine with that, and tap him once again with his zanpakuto. Renji's grin quickly becomes a frown.

“I can handle two more,” he insists.

Shrugging, you oblige him. His movements turn absurdly sluggish, but he keeps right on going undeterred. Kira then insists you double his weight another time to match Renji, which you do.

“That's unexpected,” Hinamori muses, stopping her jumping jacks as her two friends continue their exercises, glaring at each other all the while.

“They're idiots!” you realize aloud, watching the two Lieutenants continue flailing weakly under their own modified weight. “They're actual, honest-to-god idiots!”

“Yeah, but it's kind of endearing I think,” Hinamori smiles. “I can't remember the last time I saw Izuru trying this hard to beat Renji... I actually kind of missed this from our academy days. We spent so much time in different Divisions, then there was that whole mess with Aizen and the invasion... Izuru's seemed pretty distant since then. I mean even more so than usual.”

“Well, I guess even if he is an idiot it's good to see some life out of him,” you shrug, watching the very same shinigami collapse as Renji grins triumphantly... before falling over himself.

By that i mean: make him cast each spell in succession until he fails. When he fails he has to cast the preceeding two before attempting the one he failed at again. Should subtly increase the difficulty without discouraging him and force in the technique required.

I think a big issue for all three of these guys is their mental state.
Momo's afraid of her own sword, kira's afraid too of failure to try and renji also fears failure but also feels inadequate.

We need to get down to the reasons behind those thoughts and give them some direct positive reinforcement.
They need some therapy no jutsu.

“Hope you saved some energy for kidō training!” you muse cheerfully. “I'm feeling generous, so I'll even let you do it at your regular weight! Aren't I such a wonderful Captain?”

There's a round of grumbling, but the Lieutenants seem to collect themselves well enough to continue training. Hinamori is the only one who seems at all enthusiastic however, probably because she respected what she suspected were her limits.

“Now then,” you begin. “The numbered kidō system exists as a guide to learning how to manipulate one's reiatsu. Which of course means if you have difficulties with a specific spell, you probably skipped one of the earlier ones that would have taught you the appropriate skill.”

“How many of you have learned all of the kidō before the highest number you can cast?”

Even Omaeda stares at you in dumbfounded silence, as what you've just told them is very limited knowledge. You only mentioned it to Rangiku this morning, making her one of three people in the Gotei 13 that you know of who are aware of the secret.

“How did you even realize that?” Hinamori wonders aloud. “It feels so obvious in retrospect.”

“I had help,” you shrug. “I've been trying to learn Hadō 99, and the realization that there were gaps in my training was a part of that process.”

“Now then, let's begin with Shō and work our way up from there.”

As much as the Lieutenants seem to feel patronized by this, they oblige you. And then they perform the second spell easily enough. The first time anyone has trouble is when Renji fails to properly perform Hadō 12.

“No, no,” Hinamori insists quietly, “you're doing it wrong. You're focusing on the power, what you need to do is keep it hidden then increase the power as much as you can.”

“That's what number ten teaches you,” you observe calmly. “Practice that one until you're comfortable with it, Renji, then try Fushibi again. The rest of you continue until you hit your own snag.”

To your satisfaction Omaeda is the next to stall, right around #30, while Kira stalls just shy of #40 as the number of spells they simply skipped becomes apparent. Of all three Hinamori gets the furthest by about ten spells on Kira's first failure.

“Now that you've identified the spells you're not doing so great at...”

You pause, sensing something disturbing in progress...

A few minutes later, after making several unfortunate detours, you're finally joined by Kenpachi. He wears a broad smile on his face, like a psychopath in the middle of hacking up victim number twelve or thirteen, and his hair is long and unkempt compared to his typical spikes.

“Heh, finally found you!” he exclaims happily, drawing his sword. For a moment you and your wife both stare at him appraisingly before Yoruichi speaks her mind.

“Don't you usually have that pink thing following you around?” she muses, as if expecting Lieutenant Kusajishi to magically appear from behind Kenpachi's back. “The one who usually just calls me “boobies” instead of my actual name, or any of my titles?”

“I'd get smacked for that,” you shrug, “and it's a valid question.”

“I finally learned why I like her so much!” Kenpachi replies, still grinning like a madman. “She was my ambition.”

After a moment it dawns on you. “I see... so that girl was your manifested zanpakuto spirit? But then that means you know her actual name?”

“More importantly how does she have a zanpakuto of her own?” Yoruichi asks immediately afterwards.

You can only shake your head. “Later.”

“I'm here to kill you,” Kenpachi concludes, resting his sword over his shoulder. “Drink, Nozarashi!”

In an instant his weapon is replaced by something ungodly large slung over the same shoulder, halfway between a meat cleaver and a massive two-handed war axe.

“That's gotta be compensating for something,” you frown, narrowing your eyes at the massive blade as you take in the changes in its wielder's reiatsu.

“A total lack of kidō,” Yoruichi observes. “But its weight...”

“I know,” you nod sternly. “If I don't take him seriously it doesn't matter if it's sharp or not, I'll end up wrapped around it like tin foil.”

After a few moments locking eyes with Zaraki, you hear your wife admit something in a low voice. “You may actually have to kill him his time.”

Wasting no time, you draw both of your swords from their sheaths... but instead of calling their names, you take a moment to express exactly how you feel about Kenpachi right now.

“Fuck you,” you grumble as you feel a massive surge of power flow through your body, your voice beginning to echo as you unload on your fellow Captain. “I've had enough of your fucking obsession over a private fight that I don't even particularly want. I'd prefer that you just save it for Aizen, but I think we both know that's not gonna happen unless I kick your ass.”

That's right!” Zaraki roars, raising his massive zanpakuto and grasping its hilt firmly in both hands. “This shit's what I've been waiting for! Fight me! Cut me! Make me feel like this was all worth it!”

“Tonbogiri with that thing?” Yoruichi exclaims. “He really does mean to kill you!”

“No,” you grumble, glaring at Zaraki, reaching out with your left arm as you hear Tenkotsuki's voice already at work in your head with the appropriate incantation to match your own spell. “I refuse.”

“Kuyō Shibari!”
“Kurohitsugi!”

Your go-to bakudō quickly binds Kenpachi in place, as he glances down angrily as the ninth orb of dark reiatsu manifests at the center of his chest, larger and far more violent in nature than usual. “For real? You think this will...”

Then the orbs collapse in on themselves, distorting the space around Kenpachi's body from the gravitational shear. The orb in his chest breaks his ribs and crushes his sternum in an instant, and the Captain's eyes go wide in surprise as the gravitational waves bend and warp his limbs. You can hear them break in some places, a rapid staccato series of sickening cracks.

For good measure you follow with a hirenkyaku to close the distance, cocking your arm back.

“Ikkotsu!”

You feel your knuckles crack and your skin break from the impact, but the effect on Kenpachi is immediate. His reiatsu wavers as his nose and front teeth shatter, then the giant Captain goes down. His zanpakuto embeds itself point-first into the dirt behind him, now sealed into its familiarly jagged form.

He doesn't move.

Well I suspect he'll definitely be upset in some way at the very least. I think it's mostly the fact that he wants to be the strongest dude around but Riku has always more or less overshadowed him in that sense, so he feels like he has to beat us to prove he's the best.

Or something like that, I'm really just guessing.
>>
>>1325793
The problem is our values are incompatible. Riku feels like she has a lot to live for, so if she sees Kenpachi as a genuine threat to her life, she's going to fight with everything she has and not just whatever Kenpachi is good at.
>>
>>1325793

If he just keeps fighting like a charging bull the only enemies he will be able to beat are those weaker than him and idiots. We know how he fights, we told him many times to learn how to use a sword, we got him training. What he does when he gets Bankai? Front charge without even using two hands to hold the sword.
>>
>>1325847

Kneeling next to him, you quickly assess Kenpachi's condition. It's not great... his chest is practically caved in and he's having great difficulty breathing, though in spite of that he's actually still conscious. You set to work slowly reconstructing his sternum, so that he doesn't literally suffocate before you can get him to Unohana.

“I'll never be able to give you the sort of fight you want,” you begin explaining to him, still in a dual released state. “My duty as a Captain takes absolute priority. If that means avoiding a fight with you then that's what I'll do, if it means beating you by fighting dirty I'll swallow my pride, if that means overwhelming you with kidō... well I'm as proud of that as I am of my kenjusu anyway, so it's not a problem to me.”

“Same with Retsu,” you continue, still trying to arrange the mess between the ends of his shattered ribs. “She has her own duties as well that go beyond your title, and beyond her own desires to fight you to the death. So if fighting one of us to the death is the only thing that'll satisfy you, then your life may as well end here. Because what you want will never come to pass.”

He simply lays there silently, unable to draw a firm breath and fill his lungs and so unable to manage a response. But the look in his eyes says it all: rage at having been denied his fight exists at the same time as recognition that you're telling him the truth, the sadness of a man who's realized his lifelong dream is impossible.

The only word for it is heartbreak.

“I know you're happy to have found your ambition again,” you conclude, having just about stabilized his condition, “and honestly I'm a little happy for you too. But if you're going to stay sane you need to find a way to focus that ambition on something else. I really do hope you can do that, maybe not right away but eventually.”

A relief team is able to come and retrieve Kenpachi after a half hour or so, which gives you time to basically reconstruct the man's chest as Yoruichi watches in contemplative silence. As they carry him off in a stretcher, he gestures for them to stop.

“You're too trusting,” he grumbles weakly. “What if I'd tried to stab you again while you healed me?”

“I'm not trusting at all,” you admit calmly. “I stayed in full release the whole time.”

After Kenpachi is out of sight, you glare at a spot near where Yoruichi's been seated.

“So how much were you watching?”

“Only the parts that happened after my arrival,” Shutara admits, lowering a colorful sheet of silky fabric like the scenery of the Seireitei flattened into a close-woken tapestry of sorts. “For what it is worth your words were good ones.”

“So whose idea was it to send him here?”

Yoruichi's tone betrays her surprise... as well as disgust. “Was it Ichibē's intention for Riku to crush Kenpachi's dreams like that? Or was he hoping one would kill the other off?”
>1/2
>>
>>1325938
Here's something we should ask him, why did he never try to pick a fight with Yamamoto?

Like will he lay off if/when we become Head Captain, or did Kenpachi realize that if it was a serious fight with Old Man Genocide, he'd be barbecue?
>>
>>1325947
I feel like Riku is being a bit charitable, because even beyond being a Captain, I'd say that being a wife and adoptive mother also fall before wanting to fight Kenpachi.
>>
>>1325981
Being a Wife
Being a Mother
Killing Aizen
Making sure nothing else wants to destroy/usurp the Universe
Keeping up the Gardening
Doing the Dishes

Lotsa stuff that comes before wanting to kick Kenpachi's head in.
>>
>>1325947
His hopes and dreams...gone.
>>
>>1325947
“Either would have worked for him,” Shutara explains, biting gently at her lower lip as she considers the point. “The reason I came here personally was to ensure that at very least neither of you was killed, and that the Gotei 13's combat power would not suffer for this.”

“The more he actually involves himself in this whole affair,” Yoruichi grumbles mutinously, “the more it makes me want to take a shot at killing him myself. Everything about it bothers me, what he is as well as how he conducts his business.”

“That would be difficult,” Shutara sighs. “Not only would it be political suicide, but Ichibē's powers are quite arcane. So long as one person is alive who can speak his name he'll just come back anyway.”

“To achieve such a goal would require you to kill quite a few people, myself included.”

“I'm not even sure why you told me that,” Yoruichi shakes her head, “but that certainly won't do. Guess it was never going to be easy.”

You glance sidelong at Shutara. If even other Captains want a piece of you this badly, it can only leave you to wonder: how long will it be before the Royal Guard become your enemy as well? And is there anything you can do to stop what seems increasingly like a certainty?

More importantly perhaps they felt the sort of reiatsu she released. Tenkotsuki and Riku's reiatsu feels like a tingling numbness as previously mentioned, but Rosa's feels kind of gut-wrenching when Riku is properly backing that release with genuine anger. It's a feeling like being yelled at by a close loved one, or someone whose opinion you really respect.

It's a singularly unpleasant experience.

I've had a sit and i just dunno.
It's like ichibe really is provoking us, doing shit he knows will bother us, trying to goad us into doing something that will give him an excuse to kill us and remove the problem.

His job is basically to prevent unstable influences from fucking everything up, right?
Well, if we fly off the handle and kick him in the dick, even though he really deserves it, we'd sort of be proving to him that we're going to be a problem down the road, i guess.
I don't really like that line of thought, but it's possible.

The obvious option in that case would be to organize an official trip to the palace or otherwise a meeting with division zero down here in the seireitei and ask them very nicely to please stop doing really horrible and mean things to us.
Just talk it out, like reasonable, not-world-destroying goddess might do.
>>
>>1328021
>>That was... unpleasant, in several ways. I've really been overestimating what it does.

It's not that bad, but the power really shines after your opponent weighs over a billion lbs on the 23rd hit.

Guy needs to get sanic fast.
>>
>>1328372
This.
If you do nothing but increase the speed at which you can double your opponent's weight, they'll be fucked.

Try what is essentially vibrating the sword against the opponent's body, traveling the absolute minimum distance before striking them again instead of winding up a whole goddamn swing for a single doubling.
>>
>>1328377
I'd say he should be fencing, but fuck that sword is wonky.
>>
>>1328381
Basically he should probably be on full defence unless the opponent start trying to use ranged attacks/kido
Eventually they and their weapon will become so heavy and slow that they'll realize they're fucked and probably try to escape, then you go on offense and crush them to death with the weight of their own body.
>>
>>1328372
>>1328377
>>1328381
He should definitely be focusing on a style of quick glancing strikes and dodging his opponent rather than stronger blows of a more traditional style, death of a thousand cuts and all that with a final execution strike at the end once his opponent has been immobilized.
>>
>>1328345
just imagine the future when Riku is Head Captain. Everyone will be afraid of her when she pulls out Rosa and double releases, and then you get the overwhelming gut-wrenching guilt of this woman who treated you like her own child is now angry at you.
>>1328356
On one hand, yes Mad monk is salty that Riku exists according to his principle. And he's being a salty dick for setting Kenny loose on Riku in a gambit of sorts. On the other hand, Kenny needed a wake up call badly and a way to get his raging fight boner finally soften after a century of blueballing.

And about the Monk himself, his power lets him maintain practical immortality as long as people remember him right? That's the caveat to his abilities. The moment everyone who knows him and his name forgets about him, he ceases to exist.

In short, we'll never be able to get rid of the Monk barring Homicide and political suicide. If we want to keep our standing, the best thing we can do is neutralize his opinion by maintaining a popular 3 to 2 approval majority among the royal guard.
>>
>>1328394
I think someone has to say his name? so as long as the number is small and you completely erase his historic presence it could be done.
>>
>>1328394

Here's the catch. The monk is still useful to the world. He's a good coach and a good guard and he's overall a decent man. His only caveat is that he has racist attitudes against half-divines for a good reason, but times change and that racism of his is detrimental in this day and age.

If he's scared of Riku making half-divine babies then have Riku tell the Monk she's a lesbian and doesn't plan on having biological half-divine babies aside from adopting orphans. That should calm his tits down a bit.
>>
>>1328437
Well ya never know, Riku and the cat could involve a guy they both like.
Its doubtful, but bi couples have had a doner dad before.

So i doubt he would take that at face value.
>>

“If you'll excuse me,” you bow curtly to the Royal Guard. “I need to get back to training some Lieutenants.”

“Very well,” Shutara nods in response. “Don't let me keep you.”

With that formality out of the way, you quickly return to your charges at the Ninth Division. Standing side by side with Yoruichi, you try and gauge their responses to the battle they all just felt. The looks on their faces are mostly horror at the sensation of Rosa's reiatsu and the outpouring from your spells washing over them. Omaeda in particular looks absolutely terrified, as if you're about to eat his soul. Hinamori seems to avoid eye contact, but isn't trembling the way Kira is.

“Come on, Omaeda,” Yoruichi scowls, “show some backbone. You're the Lieutenant of the Onmitsukidō for crying out loud... act like it!”

“I... yes, ma'am!” he replies, trying as hard as he can to seem convincing.

Renji shakes his head dismissively. “That's not gonna work, so let's just try and forget that whole thing ever happened.”

“That may be for the best,” Hinamori agrees quietly.

“Oh come on,” you shake your head. “It couldn't have been that bad, I only got a little angry.”

“It was bad,” Hinamori insists, “like everyone I care about was cursing at me all at once, and I didn't even know why. So can we please just move on?”

“For what it's worth,” you tell the Lieutenants as you turn your back to them, “I apologize if the sensation of my release was disturbing. Zaraki was trying to force me into a deathmatch, and that left me little choice but to respond with... prejudice.”

“But that is the nature of my other zanpakuto,” you continue, “and the reason I choose not to rely heavily on it. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll take a moment to check in on some other charges of mine.”

Leaving the Lieutenants under Yoruichi's care for the time being, you head for the medical wing where two arrancars have been holed up since Kusaka's defeat. You had once sliced off Yang's arm, and she's been recovering while the twins debated how to handle their current situation.

You greet them by knocking on their door. “Hey, you mind?”

Yin glances at you nervously while Yang speaks. “No.”

“Yes...”

Yin sighs, clearly frustrated at the impasse. “Look, she's our host and she healed your injuries herself. Just... give her the benefit of the doubt?”

“You felt that same as I did,” Yang counters from her bed.

“Look,” you insist sternly, drawing their attention. “I got a little angry, alright? I'm tired of people treating it like I went full-blown psychopath just because I made them feel bad.”

“And I didn't even kill the moron! I just crushed his sternum a little, he'll be fine!”

“You wanna talk about it?” Yin asks.

You stare at her in disbelief. “Okay, fine, I guess you don't. So why are you here?”

You sigh and shake your head. “I wanted to know how Yang here was healing, and whether you decided what you want to do next.”

“Well, to be honest we talked around it for a while,” Yin admits sheepishly.

Man it must really suck for Riku. Everyone respects her yet fears her at the same time to the point respect could be mistaken for fear and it's driving Riku nuts. All because of a neglectant monk who let Kenny off the leash just to be a dick. We're so misunderstood.
The whole being afraid of big scary riku thing is fun, but it's a detriment to our character, too.

I feel like people are starting to think we really are more of a monster than a person or something.
We should do something similar to when we introduced the arrancar to everyone, have a get-together with everyone and just... relax. Talk, do normal people things.
Nobody trusts us, they fear us because they don't understand us, so we should give them a chance to learn about who we are as a person so they can start seeing us as one.
Hell, that may even be part of why some of the royal guard don't like us, all they see is a big walking explosion and not a whole lot of the good, reasonable individual underneath.

“Look, you want my advice?” you muse, and the twins share a glance that makes you really wonder if they do. “I'll be going soon to talk to a friend of mine, an arrancar I helped along a century ago. One of the strongest I've ever met, and definitely the most generous.”

“I'll point her your way,” you conclude. “You should at least talk with her before making your decision.”

Yin glances at her sister. “Thank you... we both appreciate your consideration.”

“Yeah, right,” Yang agrees halfheartedly, glancing at her stump for a moment.

You excuse yourself from their room, and quickly seek out Halibel and Apacci. You find them sitting together out in one of the gardens, the former reading a book and the latter simply sitting in the warm sun with her eyes shut.

“That book any good?”

Halibel shakes her head, turning the page. “Lousy.”

“Then why are you still reading it?”

“It gives me something to compare better books to,” Halibel explains thoughtfully. “Makes me appreciate them more.”

“I see,” you nod. “So how are you feeling?”

“Fine,” Halibel shrugs.

“Same,” Apacci agrees. “How are you feeling?”

“Frustrated,” you admit.

To your surprise and amusement, Apacci gets to her feet and puts her arms around your middle. Simply accepting the gesture for what it is, you briefly bury your forehead in her shoulder.

“You looked like you needed it, 'kay?” she insists, suddenly pushing you away again. “Don't think I've gone all soft or anything.”

“I'm not complaining, even if you totally have,” you smirk. “Thanks.”

“I need you two to go talk to Yin and Yang,” you conclude. “Just... help them sort things out, alright?”

Halibel sets aside the book she insists isn't very good, and nods. “I have little better to do. May as well do so now.”

Tatsuki is surprisingly insightful.

What about Rukia?
>>
>>1333039
Rukia's a little more in the camp of the other Lieutenants you've seen, a little shocked at what she felt. Normally Riku releases Kobara no Tachi for its effect, but in this case it was because she was legitimately enraged by Zaraki's bullshit. So instead of being strongly in tune with Tenkotsuki Riku was more in tune with Rosa, leading to that unusual shift in how her reiatsu felt. Not strong enough to hinder Tenkotsuki and Riku's communication but nearly so.
>>
Omake idea: Yamada desperately tries to not be noticed as Riku pounds lieutenants into the dirt barehanded, floods the area with terrifying reiatsu, and encourages some of her strongest arrancars to remain in resurrección constantly.

Yes we've had a lot of this point of view, no I haven't gotten tired of seeing him terrified out of his mind
>>
>>1332560
>>I see, so that's how she married Miss Yoruichi. All her anger at what happened was sealed away someplace else.

That makes me wonder: Has Rosa’s hatred of Yoruichi cooled any over the years, or has she just not been bothering to bring it up?
>>
>>1333553
Wow, imagine what it would feel like if she gets a second release for Rosa.

>>1334038
I think Tatsuki is a little off because Rosa's anger was never fixated on Yoruichi. Tatsuki probably wouldn't know, but, iirc, Rosa never even saw the face of her killer. Yoruichi is probably one of the greatest assassins of all time, and she was surgical in ensuring that rosa died almost instantly. The only shinigami that Rosa specifically hates is the guy that killed her parents.
>>
>>1332560
>Tuesday

This was the day that Zaraki finally discovered his ambition, and subsequently had his dreams crushed and his heart broken.

But for Riku, it was Tuesday.
>>
>>1335445
I don’t recall if the moment of Rosa’s death was ever shown on-screen, but in the confrontation in thread 15, it’s pretty clear she knows who killed her.
>>
>>1335590
Truth, but Yoruichi subsequently acquitted herself by not only allowing her subordinates to retreat, but for admitting fairly early on to Riku that she felt a sense of responsibility to her over it.
>>
>>1335738
So, I take it she’s calmed down to the degree that a being of rage and anger is capable of?

>>
>>1335753
Pretty sure she actually gave her blessing, back when we were fighting that Quincy who could magnify fears
>>
>>1335753

>>
>>1335795
so what makes Riku dual releasing this time with genuine anger at Kenny that makes this so different than her going into double releasing and going into bankai with genuine anger when Inaba was torturing Rangiku? What was the Tenko/Rosa tuning ratio at that time?

And for all the times a fight breaks out in the 9th did any of the POWs feel it? like I know they're currently in seki-stone lined cells, but if you said everyone felt Riku's reiatsu when she went fury of the Goddess on Inaba, do you mean everyone including the prisoners? Because that is a very important distinction to make.
>>
>>1335795

“Wow. That's actually quite a bit of damage... did Captain Kusajishi really do that by flicking it?”

Hanataro shakes his head quietly at his subordinate's question, before smiling timidly at the mousy-haired girl. “No, the way Captain Unohana explained it she didn't actually make contact with it.”

The Third Seat rubs his neck and smiles awkwardly as the girl squeals in excitement at the notion that there's actually someone that absurdly strong in the Seireitei. If he's being honest, Hanataro actually finds it a little terrifying... because it strongly implies that not only are there probably other Captains who can do it, but that Kusajishi herself is probably even stronger than that.

Getting a bit closer to the damage in question, Hanataro quickly identifies a few stone blocks that will need to be removed and replaced one at a time to maintain the castle foundation's structural integrity throughout the process. The rest of the damage is either superficial or can be mended with kidō, so while it looks bad to an untrained eye... well, it is bad, just not nearly as unsafe as it looks.

“Huh,” he muses, having finished directing his work team to their appointed tasks. “That feels a little like Captain Zaraki. He must be training diligently if I can feel his reiatsu from here.”

Glancing over his shoulder however suggests that something else is going on, as Hanataro notices that the Lieutenants who had been training in the open range near the site of the damage he was sent to repair fall quiet. They seem almost as jumpy as he tends to get around Captains, and even quite a few of the Ninth Division's rank-and-file shinigami seem to have been given pause.

And then he feels it.

There's something distinctly upsetting about the presence which rises to smack Zaraki's back down, it's familiar and yet at the same time unlike anything Hanataro had ever experienced. His own Captain can be unnerving when she gets mad, but if he had to find a comparison this would be more like the feeling he got when she told him that she was disappointed in him for trying to help Ichigo and the others back during their invasion. As if he's somehow let someone down, and it's impossible to shake even though he knows he hasn't done anything wrong.

Then, almost as quickly as it came, Zaraki's presence fades dramatically. Like a candle having been blown out there's still evidence that it was there, but the fire itself is gone. Instead he's shaken by an overwhelming sense of baseless guilt accompanied by a surge of the responder's reiatsu, which soon disappears as well.

“Are you okay, Third Seat Yamada?” the mousy-haired member of his own devision asks, blissfully unaware of the clash which just took place.

He nods gently. “Of course nothing's wrong! I need to look into something real quick... please just see to it everyone continues with their assigned duties!”

"That's not what I asked..." she muses as he runs off.

If Hanataro knows anything, it's how to avoid being noticed too much by Lieutenants and Captains. The trick is to play upon their tendency to ignore anything they view as beneath their notice, like cleaning crews, vastly weaker shinigami from other Divisions, or people doing menial tasks. When one's focus is elsewhere it's that much easier to overlook things you wouldn't be paying attention to under normal circumstances.

Wrapping himself up in his own pathetic image like a sad little ninja amid the shroud of night, Hanataro is able to walk practically right up to the Lieutenants without their giving him a second thought.

“There's no way that was Kusajishi!” Omaeda stammers, trying to sound authoritative. “We've all felt her fight before, remember?”

“I felt her shikai's reiatsu there too,” Hinamori counters quietly, her face pale but her tone of voice remarkably even. “It may seem hard to believe, but that was definitely Captain Kusajishi. Probably the result of that second zanpakuto she forged, the one with what used to be her hollow powers in it.”

“It must have been,” Renji grumbles. “I don't know how any regular zanpakuto could ever make someone feel that awful, just by releasing it.”

“Every zanpakuto reflects a part of its wielder's soul,” Kira adds. “What does it say about someone when their zanpakuto gives you that sort of feeling?”

Hinamori responds with a sharp glare. “I don't know, what does it say about you that your zanpakuto makes people collapse under their own weight? I mean, what would your Bankai even be like?”

“Probably gross,” Omaeda remarks in obvious disgust at the thought.

“And what does it say about Renji that his zanpakuto spirit has tits?” Kira parries, directing attention onto someone else.

Renji blushes furiously. “Hey, I didn't choose how Zabimaru look when they manifest! And if we're gonna go that way with it, Gegetsuburi's spirit's got tits too!”

“Point is we've all got things about us we'd rather keep out of the spotlight,” Hinamori interjects before Omaeda can counter Renji's insult. “Captain Kusajishi just uses hers as a weapon, which means at some point she's had to confront those things. It's more honest about it than any of us have been.”

“Hey, are you...” Renji begins, only to be silenced.

“No,” Hinamori replies firmly. “No I'm not, and you shouldn't be either.”

>>1339069
A few minutes pass in uncomfortable silence before Captains Shihōin and Kusajishi return to the Ninth Division barracks to find the Lieutenants in a state of obvious unease. Hanataro can tell from where he's standing, pretending to do menial work, that the mood definitely grew tense when the source of that uncomfortable feeling arrived. The two face away from Hanataro, but he can still hear their voices.

“Come on, Omaeda,” Captain Shihōin scowls at her Lietuenant, “show some backbone.

“Oh come on,” Kusajishi shrugs, still trying to look relaxed about the whole situation. “It couldn't have been that bad, I only got a little angry.”

“It was bad,” Hinamori insists quietly, “like everyone I care about was cursing at me all at once, and I didn't even know why. So can we please just move on?”

The Captain turns away, and Hanataro can watch as her smile disappears entirely.

“For what it's worth, I apologize if the sensation of my release was disturbing.” she tells them quietly. “Zaraki was trying to force me into a deathmatch, and that left me little choice but to respond with...”

Hanataro watches as she struggles briefly to find the right word.

“...prejudice.”

“But that is the nature of my other zanpakuto,” she continues, her expression betraying both sadness and determination even as her voice remains firm and unchanging. “and the reason I choose not to rely heavily on it. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll take a moment to check in on some other charges of mine.”

She seems to take no notice as Hanataro continues to sweep at a nearby tree with his broom, too concerned with what he's heard and seen to realize how bizarre his actions would seem to someone not lost in their own thoughts.
>3/?
>>
>>1339085
Once Kusajishi is out of earshot, Captain Shihōin rounds on the Lieutenants with a fury that almost shakes them as much as Kusajishi's reiatsu did.

“The hell was that?” she snaps, interrupting Renji as he tries to account for himself. “Don't speak, that was rhetorical. Do you really think that just because you've all gotten a little bit of power and prestige your opinions are so important in the grand scheme of things, that you're in a position to cast judgment on a Captain who's sworn to live and die to protect others? Someone who'd risk her life with a smile for each and every one of you, even after the way you treated her just now?”

“You Lieutenants should be ashamed,” she spits, before throwing a sharp glare towards Hanataro. Upon realizing what it is she's seeing, that glare softens. “That tree's been swept already today, Third Seat.”

With a start, Hanataro nearly drops the broom and apologizes in a near endless stream for eavesdropping.

Yoruichi merely sighs, seeming to have vented much of her anger. “The deed's done... but you seem like you have something to say?”

“Just that... well... she seemed really upset when she left,” Hanataro stammers, sheepishly recounting what he'd seen from his perspective. “I mean, she hasn't done anything wrong, has she? But people still mistrust her, and Captain Zaraki just tried to kill her... shouldn't we be trying to be compassionate towards her after all that? Because even if she seems scary sometimes... doesn't it seem like she'd be doing that in our place?”

A faint grin tugs at the corner of the Captain's lips as the Lieutenants shift their weight uncomfortably at the thought of how Captain Kusajishi would probably have behaved had their positions been reversed.

“I feel like an asshole,” Renji mutters.

Yoruichi nods sagely. “Go with the feeling, Lieutenant.”

“Thank you for saying that, Third Seat,” Hinamori replies quietly. “Captain Shihōin, would you mind... no. On second thought I'll say it myself once there's a bit of distance. It'll give me some time to reflect.”

Wow....this omake really sheds some light on how Riku's behavior and policy really colors how others perceive her behind her back. Her reformation of 9th Division, her questionable actions and her influence among the top brass in the Gotei 13 as a prominent figure in the defense of Seireitei and get away with it in the face of opposition, her recruitment and befriending of both Arrancar and Quincy, the fact that the Royal Guard has her on their shit list for an entire century, and the frightening displays of power Riku throws around both in seriousness and in silliness.

In terms of the Machiavellian principle, Riku hits all the points of being loved, feared, and respected; but people are starting to fear her rather than respect and love her. And that stems from Riku having to devote time and energy to better the standings of her fellow arrancar friends among her shinigami peers, improve herself for the upcoming battle, and generally endure getting yelled at/scrutinized by the C-46 and the Royal Guard; Leaving no time to actually spend time with shinigami from other divisions or her subordinates.

Hey Queen:
Will there be any significant changes to the stat pastebin and social pastebin?

What kind of Drunk is Riku really? she seems to strike as the playful drunk but also the sad drunk that confesses her problems to others.
Omake idea:
Riku drinking with Shunsui from Shunsui's POV, where Shunsui is strangely feeling sober and he's listening to a drunken Riku confess her grievances about her standings with the C-46, the Royal Guard, the shadow war with Aizen, and how she felt personally responsible for Jushiro and Yamamoto's death by accidentally releasing Arturo.

>>
On an unrelated note, what aspects of themselves do you think Berry boys, Rukia's and Tatsuki's zanpakto represent?
>>
>>1339739
idk about the others but i definitely feel that Tatsuki's Filled with Determination
>>
>>1339739
My understanding is that Zangetsu isn't a real Zanpakuto, so it isn't necessarily based on one of Ichigo's aspects. That being said, Zangetsu himself has stated that he's Ichigo's 'purest instincts'. Which does seem to line up. Anime Ichigo is constantly just flying by the seat of his pants and learning from his opponents as he fights them. As you do with any shounen anime protagonist.

As for Rukia, my intuition is that it must definitely have something to do with the fact that it's both beautiful and an ice-type. I don't think those details just got pulled out of thin air. Something like propriety or dignity perhaps? I'm sure that's the right direction but I'm not quite hitting the heart of it.

Tatsuki, I feel as though determination is too obvious. Her power reminds me a lot of Bruce Lee's speech about how one should be like water. Not adaptability exactly, but more like resilience? Like it doesn't matter what you do to her, what you try to throw up in her path, or how hard she falls, she's still no matter what going to pop back up and push your face in. Like the English language associates someone who's tough with a sort of stiffness, but Tatsuki's the opposite. She's tough because she's elastic.
>>

Flexibility you mean? or Adaptability
>>
>>1341691
Resilience.

>Her power reminds me a lot of Bruce Lee's speech about how one should be like water.

Is this the quote?
>Flow in the living moment. — We are always in a process of becoming and NOTHING is fixed. Have no rigid system in you, and you'll be flexible to change with the ever changing. OPEN yourself and flow, my friend. Flow in the TOTAL OPENNESS OF THE LIVING MOMENT. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo.

>Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
>>
>>1341815
Not the specific one I was thinking of, but the gist is the same.

"You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend."
