"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Shhhhh, the show hasn't started yet.
>>
>>1325299

You are Lieutenant 'Prince'. A seasoned NCO of the Black Company that, through a cruel twist of fate, found yourself landed with an officer's commission. Now you find yourself in command of the 7th Kiregstrom Shocktroopers, a position with more responsibility and scrutiny than you ever wanted.

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
Following the fall of the Neumunster city of Sarsburg several weeks ago, your Employer has sent his unholy host spread throughout the entirety of the western and northern reaches of the Neumunster Nation. While the main part of the Company and the undead went west to Oxenfurt Bridge, you were tasked with the seizure of the northern town of Kresden.

You've done that. And better yet you've taken it almost entirely intact, protecting both buildings and inhabitants alike from the violence (sort of) and the unsavoury attentions of your own reinforcements (mostly). And now the whole of what's left of Northern Nuemunster stretches before you undefended. It's time to project force from your secure town and bring the crumbling 'Empire' to heel.

A few days have passed since your own personal War Council. It may not have had the pomp and majesty of the Free Alliance war councils but it worked well enough. The last couple of days have seen every detachment running over scenarios and drills pertaining to their particular mission. The Rangers and Ajiyimad mercs rehearse dispersal tactics to combat Albani doctrine, the Infantry practice forming square against cavalry patrols, the Vampires pore over the Abbey map provided by a shamefaced Trooper 'Saint'.

Tomorrow is Saint Kupin's Day, patron saint of the end of harvesting feasts. Tomorrow you march.

Kresden, A few days after the War Council, The Day Before the Offensive
Kresden Manor, Study Room, Mid-Afternoon

Doctor Arnulf K. Kurerfitz paused from his readings, looking over his spectacles at the wanning sun outside the window. “Hrmm. Very well children, I zink zat will be enough for today. For revision you vill be copying Achidemeus’ third entry, in your own verds please.”

The doctor’s son, the eldest child, packed their books away as the two olive skinned adopted daughters waved goodbye to Trooper Kid before rushing out to play Tip-Toes-Break-Your-Nose before it got too dark. Kid wasn’t too interested, even after they had explained that it doesn’t actually involve breaking your nose. Still, they were nice enough. Kid didn’t know how to feel about that, apart from the son whose good-natured know-it-all attitude irked them a little. Trooper Kid wasn’t used to being around people their age.

”Child? A verd please. Thank you.” The Doc smiled at the boy (he assumed) ”I understand that I am not to accompany you directly on this mission. Are you confident in your studies so far? Ve have only just scratched ze surface after all.”

‘Kid’ nodded. The way the Lieutenant saw it, better to keep him here to treat the returning wounded as they came in from all over rather than have him directly on hand for the benefit of only one mission. Hopefully Kid could keep them alive until they made it back. They weren’t looking forward to that, but they knew how to be a medic now, or at least the basics.

‘Stitch red to red, white to white, and everything will be alright.’ Trooper Kid signalled. They liked this Doc guy. Despite all the extra work, it was almost worth it to be able to have a conversation with someone again.

”Ah, very gut. I see you have been keeping up with your practice.” The Doc nod with satisfaction, pausing from his own scribbling. ”Und Child? I have some more letters to send to some colleagues regarding zis affliction of the voice you suffer from, I am told your people must go over them to censor or somesuch nonsense. I am sorry Child, ze scholars of ze Sarsburg School of Healing vould have had ze answers for me already.”

’It’s not so bad. People always use to say my mouth would get me into trouble.’ Kid signals with a grin.

”Hmph. I imagine zey did… Stay safe, child. There will be dead enough as it is without you joining zem.” Doc looks up from his writing with a sombre smile. ”Don’t you vorry about the Achidemeus entry, I find zat it lacks context without Histotle’s Essays to ground it. Enjoy your afternoon off.”

>Trooper Kid gained BATTLEFIELD MEDIC(Apprentice) SKILL. Your first two casualties deduct -1 from their severity roll.

>’Doc’ reduces post-battle Bleed Out and Maimed results by 10%. Full Night’s rest will restore Prince’s HP by +3, a half or disturbed sleep only by +1.

>Trooper Oliver Hasselhof’s gnawed leg has been salvaged, though he will limp for the rest of his days. Trooper ‘Bitten’ Dan remains permanently crippled.

---------------------

Leaning up against the wall outside the Manor Trooper Kid finishes rolling up their cigarette. The nervous looking librarian that has been holed up in one of the spare Manor rooms gives him a cheery wave as he passes, then huffs in anoyance as Kid dismisses him with a glance.

Kid pause's before they strike the match, wondering what they could do with their increasingly rare spare time

Maybe you would play ‘Tip-Toes-Break-Your-Nose’ with the girls for once. Legless Jenny (Or was it Jessica?) doesn’t play so well, but she makes a fun umpire. With all this work, mischief and occasional pants-shitting terror around it’d be nice to be a regular child again..

Saint is probably free. She’s a terrible card player but you like her company. The way she dotes on you and ruffles your hair, it reminds you of... Even the half-hearted scolding at your petty thievery shows you she cares.

That Zakashi sister from the Rangers wanted to meet up again. She’s a little bit intense but… well, kissing is nice. You’re starting to understand why adults seem to do so much of it.

But yes, she is still alive. We'll see how long that remains true with how the discussion of chucking her inside an Albani Warmachine was going last week.

”Ah, Kid!” Trooper Saint smiles as they enter the Manor study room, wiping her eyes and shuffling some paperwork over to one side. Her cheeks are puffy, like she’s been crying. She signals them in what little she knows. ”Teach Hand Words New?”

”No. I’ve had enough of bloody learning and teaching for a while.” Trooper Kid signals back.

”I… don’t think I got most of that. Looked like a ‘No’.” Trooper Saint grins, rubbing her neck. She stands up from her desk. ”I think that’s enough paperwork for today. The rest can wait until we’re back or dead. Where has CPL Marcus and First Squad gone off to?”

”In town for a pint, I saw. I wasn’t invited, they’re pretty sore losers after our last game of Wendelt Fives.”

”I didn’t get all of that, but I do understand Wendelt Fives, how delightful! I may not be getting much better at Wendelt Fives but I AM getting better at catching you cheating, you little cretin!”

The words are harsh, but Saint says it with a grin and ruffles Kid’s hair. Only one other person used to do that to Kid, they can barely remember anything from that time. But they remember that, and what she smelt like. This close Trooper Saint smells like her too. The scent of roasted almonds and… and something else.

”It’s getting dark out, and tonight’s showing a clear sky. Want to come to the wall with me and look at the stars? I can show you the constellations.”

”…Sure. That would be perfect.”

’The Puking Paladin’, A Kresden Tavern, Early-Evening

”Ah, blistering barnacles.” Trooper Vendis Durvano scowled as Trooper ‘Smiles’ swept up his winnings with one massive claw. ”How do you fekking do it, ‘Smiles’? I thought dice and numbers were your territory.”

”Wendelt Fives is also a matter of chance and probability, the numbers have not changed. Merely the shapes.” The scarred Wildborn giant grumbled. His horrific mouth-wound had healed up some, but it was still unpleasant to look at. The other patrons were avidly avoiding this corner of the room, and 1st Squad preferred it that way. ”It is simple mathematics.”

”I am confuse to this thing, alrrafiq.” Nissar was frowning as he reshuffled for the next dealer. ”3 Beggar beat 2 King? I think this not make sense. King so mightier than many Beggar, naam?
Durvano sighed. Trooper Nissar Belhamun was hard to read. Not because he was good. Because he was so Below-blasted awful. How can you tell whether a guy is bluffing if –they- don’t even know that they are bluffing?

”I’m sure ‘Joker’ would agree, given that she always seems to get Beggars. …Where is she anyway? I thought she’d have made an appearance by now.” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus said with a grunt as Cairsun the Morning Light dished out the next hand. Durvano couldn’t read the fallen hero either. He was consistently downcast regardless of how well he was doing.

”Pfft. Probably just broke is all.” Durvano snorted as he picked up his new hand. ”I cleared her out last time.”

Durvano squinted with his one good eye at his cards. Two Maidens and a Widow. Not a bad set if a Lover or a Husband came along. Fantastic if it was both.

------------------------------------

Fold would have ended with Durvano angrily trying to convince the rest of his squad that it's not gay if it's an elf!

-------------------------

”I fold.” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus grimaces. ”Can’t believe I’m wasting my silver on this shit.”

”I too am fold.” Nissar tucks his cards into a pile and pushes them into the centre.

"As am I." Cairsun The Morning Light flicks his cards down, no more sorrowful at his loss than he is at his wins.

One by one everyone folds until only Durvano and smiles are left. Durvano has them. A Lover, Husband, Two Maiden’s and a Widow. The perfect Lover’s Quarrel hand.

”All in!” The men around the table groan unanimously as the ex-pirate as he shoves every last one of his silver pieces into the centre of the table. He even unpins one of his earrings and chucks it on the pile. He tongues one of his golden teeth, as if considering taking that out too.

”You fekking idiot, Durvano.” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus mutters, pinching the bridge of his nose.

”Agreed.” Cairsun The Morning Light arches one bemused eyebrow at the failed mutineer and high-stakes gambler.

Nissar Belhamun just stares wide-eyed at the pile, then at Vendis Durvano. Then back to the pile.

Their tune changes a little when he puts down his cards. Not a bad hand, pretty fekking good in fact. The hulking Wildborn gives Durvano a horrific smile as he matches him, coin for coin. Durvano isn’t scared though, this guy is always smiling these days. Trooper Smiles starts to place down his cards, the whole squad watching intently.

A King.

A Soldier. That’s good, he’s got nothing.

A Knight. Still good.

A Queen. Wait… The last card… if it’s another Soldier…

”No…” Trooper Vendis Durvano looks at the Royal Army hand in front of him, the only one-King hand that can beat his Lover’s Quarrel. His leans forward, faced twisted in incomprehensible rage and loss. ”A Regiment?!? There’s only… you can’t! You fekking CHEA-

The word is only partially out of his lips when the scarred Wildborn growls, the slight shift of weight in his chair reminding everyone just how huge is standing up. Durvano nearly bites the tip of his tongue off with how fast he shuts his mouth.

”Ahem… I mean… good game, comrade. Good…game…” The ex-pirate slumps back in his chair. He needs a drink, but now he can’t afford one.

And so Trooper Vendis Durvano went to bed. Sober. Sad. And still horny.

Kresden Library, The Loft, Late Night

His fangs hovered above her neck, where the burn trails thinned out into unscarred flesh. He could sense every single pulse of that delicious lifeblood in her veins. Her scent was intoxicating. He couldn’t help it if he…

”Oi.” The Bloodknight gasped suddenly, the grip around his nether regions changing from tender to highly discomforting in a moment. The naked mortal female wagged her finger in front of his fangs. ”No biting. Not even a nibble. We clear?”

A pained grunt escaped him as Trooper Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster tightened her handhold just a little further.

”Crystal.” Lord Lorgia hissed between clenched teeth, and the grip became soft again. Caring. By Below he liked this spunky mortal girl. ”You know, most human women act just a little bit more timorous when bedding a Vampire. Why are you so different?”[ i]

Schuster’s burn scar crinkled as she grinned at Lorgia’s chiselled abdomen, a fine physical specimen when stripped of his fancy armour and silk dressings. He certainly worked out, if indeed Vampires even needed to bother with that kind of stuff.

”I’m not most human women, clearly. Now are you going to keep talking or are we going to do this?”

”An impatient little thing, aren’t you?” One eyebrow arched in bemusement on a pale forehead.

Schuster narrowed her eyes at the ridiculously hot (metaphorically, not literally) immortal undead creature. ”You’re not the smartest bloodsucker around, are you? I imagine most vamps would think twice before teasing a woman who has prime positioning to knee them in the balls.” The Neumunster country-girl turned sword-for-hire lifts shifts her leg slightly underneath Lord Lorgia to demonstrate her point.

”Hmm. I should devour you whole for your cheek alone. But then where would I find another bed partner with your spirit?” The Vampire Lord spoke with a fanged grin, his right arm trailing tentatively down Schuster’s waist.

”Flattery isn’t one of your strong suits is i- *gasp* Oh, that is –much- better.” She closed her eyes and licked her lips at his touch.

”So…having established the rules of our… relationship. What now?”

”Now? Kiss me, you idiot. And watch the teeth.”

Kresden Manor, Midnight

Lieutenant ‘Prince’ took care not to disturb the sleeping figure next to him as he rose out of bed and walked to the windowpane. It’s cold enough that it frosts over under your breath. Winter is just around the corner. The bedroom window looks out over the sleeping Kresden town, it looks so peaceful that you wouldn’t be able to tell that a battle had raged here a week ago. In contrast to the tranquil view your thoughts are all caught up in a storm. About the traitor in your ranks.

Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ says it must have been someone with ready access to Trooper Kid’s more sensitive portion of paperwork. That’s a fairly short list. The battle-mad loon is certain it is Trooper Saint, but… you don’t –want- it to be true. It could be any one of your Corporals, they’re also on the list of main suspects.

Trooper Saint. A bleeding heart to the core, though it’s true she has a few more rough edges these days. Handing the child over to the Necromancer would never sit well with her. The old oaths and holy warrior vows must chafe at the sight of her liege-to-be in chains. She’d do something about it, certainly. But behind your back? It can’t be…

Corporal Hirstun of Ligh. Should have retired long ago, but you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Subtleties aren’t his style, but you wouldn’t put this sort of cunning past him and his crew. The reward would make a hell of a retirement fund. Or maybe, even after all this time, they still haven’t given up on the idea of a free Northern Coast.

Corporal White Bitch. Just because you’re sleeping with her doesn’t rule them out.
Below, if anything that makes you more suspicious. She’s cutthroat enough, armed with a razor tongue and a mean streak. Would enough Gelt convince her to risk it? Maybe. It certainly wouldn’t be for a cause.

Hell, it could be Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus. Just because he found the first spy with ‘Bad Hand’ doesn’t mean he didn’t rat him out to cover his own tracks. He always did exhibit an odd level of patriotism for the homeland he’s been fighting against.

Or… it could even be Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien. He’s been running this investigation from the start. A company man, through and through, but… If it really was him… you’d never see it coming until it was too late. He’s your friend after all.

Hell, maybe this whole investigation has been a wild fekking unicorn-chase. Maybe it’s someone else. If you don’t decide who to especially keep an eye on while you’re out in the field, you may never see the dagger in your back before it’s already there…

----------------------------

Who? Who is the traitor?

>Name anyone from your Platoon. I will not include votes for Prince’s primary suspect that are merely names without a sentence explaining why you think it could be them, or at least agreeing with the points another anon has made.

”Beati, the Lieutenant is here.” The sister is speaking to Saint, perhaps her old rank still holds some significance to them. For Saint’s part at least, she seems to wince everytime she hears it.

>Cavorting with priests?

”Sir!” Trooper ‘Saint’ snaps a salute, and several wounded look up in interest. You notice that there’s a nervousness when she addresses you that wasn’t there before. Perhaps she is still processing that Mage last night.

>This is from the day after we capture the prince
>Nervous we might find her out?

You arrive downstairs to see Trooper Saint draping a large fur coat over a snoring Trooper Kid, their head resting in a pile of extremely thick books on human and inhuman anatomy. You hadn’t realised that mutes could snore.

>Kindness to children

“To be honest sir I went to bed straight after our little expedition in the catacombs. I thought I might have nightmares about Vampires, but it turned out just to be a dream about me sitting at a desk filling out C-14 Boot Requisition Forms.”

”Why up so early then?”

”Figured I get a head start on those forms, I guess.

>Large space of unneeded stuff

”I… am? Thanks, sir, I guess.” Trooper Saint narrows her drowsy angelic eyes at you, scrutinising you top to bottom. ”You look different, sir, begging my pardon. Something… a new coat? No. Did you get taller?”

I think it's saint.
The only real proof is her saying she slept all night after we first met the vampires, but we caught her all sleepy fucking with the papers while kid was out cold at the table.
Her character just seems off, too, so the rest is gut feeling.
It's like shes looking for a reason to have prince spared if it ever ends up with him dying/getting assassinated.
"He's not a bad man, he's just protecting who he loves"
The crying kinda looks that way, like shes sad that he may end up dying in this next fight, and that it might be her that has to do the deed.

”I think we can assume the traitor knows we suspect something.” CPL ‘Jack’ leaves the obvious unsaid, that hanging the spy on the spot was hardly subtle. But you don’t keep ‘Bad Hand’ around for the subtleties. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Cannot forget, the traitor has White Hair. This is not for the main suspect, i just want to get out the possibilities.

1. Saint - most likely

2. White Bitch - we are fucked, literally and figuratively, if it is her.

3. Dog-Son - he has white hair, but hes a doggo, who hates humans, so probably not him unless mind control.

4. Random Thief who was with Adventurer Party with Prince - always a possibility.

You can’t be sure. Sometimes in this officer gig it feels like there’s nothing you –can- be sure about. But you watch them all the same like a hawk all the same. It has to be Trooper Saint. Dark Father damn it, you don’t want it to be true but… It’s her isn’t it.

Free access to the paperwork, tired despite telling you she had a nap, conscientious enough to do something stupid about it. She’s certainly not incompetent in covering her tracks, she murdered a Cardinal and covered that up, didn’t she? The chumminess with the priestesses, the arguing against military targets… she never really left the Free Alliance.

The presence of the heir to the Neumunster is no secret now, can’t exactly hide him in a marching column. You didn’t like the odds of the Tassenland recruits looking the other way during a rescue attempt, or fostering one themselves, or even just being competent enough to fekking stop one. A prisoner this valuable is a double-edged sword. A king’s ransom or more, every day his capture is public knowledge becomes one more symbolic defeat of Neumunster’s invincibility. As if that myth hadn’t been blasted away along with its capital. The downsides are obvious enough as well. The Neumunster almost worship their Emperors, a semi-deific position that will see even the saner and craven of their number risk life and limb to protect them. Or rescue them. And then there’s the reward, even a fraction of the ransom would make a poor man and his descendants rich. Even the non-Neumunster in your own ranks might be tempted. At least one certainly was, by either the prize or patriotism.

Saint isn’t the type to do this for Gelt or silver. Hell, even honour probably isn’t enough to bring her to treachery. At the end of the day, she probably betrayed you because it was the ‘right’ thing to do.
Two days march into the Neumunster Countryside, Kresden Province.

You’ve had worse marches. A lot worse, both in effort and willpower. Before Far Sut Rus you marched till your feet bled. In Albani you walked until you were sure you’d drop at the next footstep, and that was before the Kalgarri put an arrow in your arse.

Trooper Saint hasn’t been let out of sight for a moment. Either you, SGT ‘Bad Hand’, CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus or Trooper ‘Pelt’ have one eye trained on them while they marched, while they ate, while they slept. While they relieved themselves even. You deferred to the Grenn on that one. In that whole time they haven’t so much as more than glanced at the boy-heir, roped to the baggage mule they ride and hopped up on a cocktail of Demagogue Jale’s own making. That in itself is suspicious, Saint nearly went off at you drugging a Dragon.

No sign of treachery, not yet at least. But you can feel it. Sometime out here there will be a chance, real or imagined, and they’ll take it. Or not. Either way, you’ll be ready.

”This is it.” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus smiles at the sight of the fort by the river, brushing aside the undergrowth to get a better look. ”Fort Casca, wonder of Neumunster engineering and the most beautiful garden on earth.”

The fort itself is unimpressive, a little thing that looks like a large house on a small hill by the river. The network of dams and funnels that turn the raging Hāastweiser River into a series of well managed streams and channels… now that –is- impressive. And all around the fort, an ingenously irrigated botanical garden. The rival of any in the world they say, and you’ve seen the Hanging Flowers of Far Sut Rus when it still existed.

CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus looks overawed. Clearly it’s somewhere he’s always wanted to go. Or he’s been here before, in happier times.

”Got some good news and some bad news, sir.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh winces as he takes a knee to join you behind the bushel, Troopers Arlen Rivers, Twice-in-One-Day and other members of his ‘Dozen’ shuffling in behind him, grey hair and beards bristling with leaves and twigs. Not as good as dedicated Rangers maybe, but wily enough for basic reconnaissance.

”I think I can guess the bad news.” You mutter at the prow of the northern ship, men surrounding it like ants at this distance.

”Aye, a ship full of Skalds. Must have arrived this morning or late last night, their camp is still a mess with supplies on the ship."

”A forward unit for the main Skald force.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grunts. ”What’s the good news?”

”The fort itself is pretty much abandoned. Didn’t see a single Neumunster face. Even better, the gate itself looks broken.”

”How are we supposed to hold the fekking thing against more Skald if the bloody gates don’t work?” CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara scowls.

CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus coughs and glances at you with some discomfort. ”I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this but… the fort has a mechanism that can seal all the dams and outlets. If we turn it on and break the mechanism irreparably… the mighty Hāastweiser River will stop here, turning this place into an underwater lake."

”Excellent. So we don’t have to stick around with our dicks in the wind once we’re done here.” ‘White Bitch nods satisfied. ”Only got those fekking Skalds on the shore between us and that fort to worry about now.”

Wait, does Durvano know about skalds because he's from the North? And IIRC Schuster fought in the North too against skalds

Unless we can't ask them?
>>
>>1326605
Durvano doesn't know Skalds, beyond winning a magical dagger off one a long way from home in Sabari.

Schuster was a youngster during the Northern Coast Campaign, where the Company and Neumunster fought against Northern Coast Rebels, Skalds and Grenn.

You are spot on. Hirstun of Ligh was a huscarl fighting for an independent Northern Coast, which allied itself with the Skald Jarls and the Grenn. They fought well but lost. Hirstun and what was left of his 'Dozen' joined the Black. Company

He killed quite of lot of Neumunster back in the day. Probably a few Company lads too.

”Fekkin easy enough.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ nods. ”Rush down there, bloody their noses and send the rest packing.”

Several NCOs grunt in agreement, half the Skalds won’t even be able to get their armour on in time if you attack now. You notice CPL Hirstun of Ligh, a veteran of the Northern Coast Campaign, is tellingly silent on the matter. The Northern Coast and the Skalds were close allies for a long time, he knows their ways.

”Corporal Hirstun, you have something for us?”

”… Hmm, guess I do have a word for you young ‘uns. Skalds aren’t like normal folk. An advance raider force is a place of honour. Only the best, the most fearless, those desperate to see the gates of their beloved Valkenheim are granted a spot. We’re looking an unprofessional sure. But they won’t break, they’ll fight to the last man if it means finding glory in the afterlife.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh’s ‘Dozen’ approve behind him in a variety of gestures. Nods, grunts and approving gobs of spit. ”I reckon we’ll win. They don’t have the numbers and aren’t even properly equipped yet. But we’ll lose a lot of good boys in the doing of it.”

You don’t like the sound of that. You prefer your enemies to break and rout rather than going through the effort of killing every single one of them. Your other NCOs seems to share your opinion. ”Any suggestions?”

”There is a way. It has to be done correctly. If you don’t get the wording right it’s all fekked and we’ve got a battle on our hands anyway. I can teach you the words, that should be good enough. If you say it then you can challenge their leader for the field.” CPL Hirstun stratches his chin, thinking. ”It’s only supposed to be for Skalds, stops them killing literally everyone in a single battle, but saying it in their tongue should work. One more thing, since you’re the challenger, according to their customs you have to fight two duels not one.”

-------------------------------------------

REVEALED:
-Skald Force has the ‘Death Song’ Ability (found on your Kreigstrom Skill Tree). After being reduced to 0 Discipline, they will fight for a further 1d3+1 rounds.
-Skald Force has the ‘To Valkenheim’ Ability. +5DC for every Discipline or 5HP lost.
-Skald Force ‘Ill-Equiped’ and ‘Unprepared’. If you attack now they will suffer -10DC battle progress.

The Skald warriors scramble to their gear as your force emerges from the underbrush, shouting alarums as they hastily don their armour, pick up weapons and fasten straps. Your formation could have crashed into their ranks long before they were done readying themselves if you charged, but you order a steady march instead with swords at guard.

By the time you march to well within bowshot of them, some Skald archers already picking out their targets, the foe has hastily formed a shieldwall and ready themselves for your attack. The Platoon’s sudden halt takes them by surprise, no ranged weapons evident among you.

You step out from the ranks, your banner bearer Kid, aide Saint, and Cairsun all behind you. Speaking their unfamiliar words is awkward, and you can almost hear CPL Hirstun of Ligh wince at your pronunciation.

[/i]”Jeg prins... syvende tropp, svart selskap… am utfordring.”[/i]

The Skald ranks murmur with a mixture of shock and amusement. A woman in their ranks laughs out loud, leaning against her spear as she shakes with mirth. Dead silence reigns when a towering bearded Skald in princely chainmail comes to the fore. He frowns at you, like a man finding a dog shitting in the wrong place.

Du massakren våre ord. Men en utfordring er en utfordring. Jeg aksepterer.

He turns his back on you and returns to the shield wall, the Skald warriors spreading out and surrounding you. For a moment you think you’ve fekked up, about to be cut down like an idiot before the battle even began, but then you see the spear woman step out from the ranks that form a half circle around you. Hirstun’s Dozen leads your men into forming the other half of the circle.

The helmeted woman flicks her braids back and twirls her spear, readying her shield of wood and iron. ”Hvis du onsker å kjempe mot min elskede mann, forst må du beseire meg!” She raises her weapon in salute, then enters into a battle stance.

Part of you is upset that you can hear your men behind you already starting up the betting on your fight to the death. Another part of you is proud that they’re giving your opponent such low odds. You spare a glance to CPL Hirstun of Ligh

”Any tips?”

”The Circle is a trial as old as the North. You’re in it now. Try not to fekking die would be my advice.”

”…Thanks.”

>Shield-maiden Astrid [-36/10 HP]
>Astrid is SLAUGHTERED! with shocking brutality.
>+1 Kriegstrom Skill

--------------------------------------

After almost a minute circling carefully, dodging or parrying the Sheildmaiden’s spear jabs, you think you have the measure of her. The snarls, cheers, shouts of useless encouragement or tips you never hear ring into the Circle from both Skald and Company sides. You have only one question. Is this a fighter, or a little girl playing at war?

Her spear leaps out behind her shield again as she leaps toward you. Too far, overstretched. One gauntlet grabs hold of the spear end, the other swinging your sword across the shaft breaking it in twain. She attempts to step back and reach for her scabbard but your boot smashes her shield into her body, slamming her into the ground.

Her hand scrambles out for the broken spear shaft. Too slow. You grind your foot down onto her fingers, hearing them snap and crack under your heel. To her credit she doesn’t scream in pain, only hisses in fury as she raises her shield up to block the swing of your sword as you stand over her.

Your blade carves through the shield. Through the iron rim, the wooden body. The meat, muscle and bone of the woman holding it. She screams then, a long pained howl at her bloody ruin of an arm and her desiccated shoulder. She tugs vainly at her broken hand, trying to get it out from under your steel-shod boot. You help her with that by chopping it off at the base of her elbow. A second screech of agony as a shower of crimson shoots up out of her ruined left side. A lethal amount of blood.

”Astrid, nei!” The pain in their leader’s voice is palpable as the maimed shield-maiden spins over onto her front, in too much shock to even scream anymore. Or cry. Only odd choking gasps escape her throat. The Circle is sacred to these Northerners, they cannot intervene. Watching the armless warrior writhe and bleed out for a little longer might entertain some, but it’s best you end her suffering and give her the warrior’s death she so eagerly desires. Perhaps she desires it more with every passing second. Or less.

You place a knee into her back, grinding her into the muddied soil, eliciting another pained groan. The Skalds look on in grim silence as you grab hold of the horns on either side of her helm and, with a sudden, sickening *WRENCH*, break her neck.

A cheer goes up from the Kriegstrom, money exchanges hands but precious little. Most were betting on the time, not the outcome. You stare at the silent Skald chief and his men, rigidly still and white knuckles on their weapon hilts.

The plus 10dc is nice but there are so many things that can modify it already, and the dice are usually bipolar. A guaranteed discipline hit can hurt and help defeat an enemy who has the upper hand, and still builds on winning results unlike the other. Any combat lasting 3 or more rounds really shows the effect of it, especially if the rolls are neutral or bad on our end.

You lock eyes with their chief as Trooper Kid steps forward and takes your bloody sword, wiping away what they can of the slick gore of the first Skald champion. This man’s woman, or something of the sort. They step out from the Skald shield wall, a mighty axe nearly as tall as you slung over their shoulder. It looks like it could cut through plate like butter. The men (and occasional woman, Skald’s are picky when it comes to fighting) chant and slam their pommels into their shields. An almost mournful keening cry from their ranks, their leader strokes the cooling cheek of their shield-maiden with the back of a massive hand. A Skald with a red beard steps forward, placing a hand on his shoulder and muttering some words. Their leader nods, then the Skald and two others gently lift her corpse away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGM3Q1dVDP4

”Any words of advice for the Lieutenant when dealing with this one?” Trooper Saint murmurs as Trooper Kid hand back your blade, about as clean as it will get in so short a time. Surprisingly enough Saint isn’t at all perturbed by your massacring the Shield-maiden. You suppose it was a fair fight, if you stretch the meaning of the word fair. She was armed at least. And Saint has doubtless seen worst, maybe –this- is the kind of killing she considers honourable.

”Don’t get fekking hit would be my first suggestion.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh grunts, helpful as ever.
Revealed: Your opponent has Cut Them Down as an ability.

This Skald is as tall as any Wildborn and then some. Apparently this Skald doesn’t just sail on ships he fekken carries them from what you can see of his muscles not covered by master-work chainmail. Trophies adorn their belt from their war against the Wild. You’re not sure but that trinket hanging from his waistcoat looks like the flight feather of a Griffin. Great, you’re dealing with a bona-fide Hero, an angry one at that.

Gudene se denne kamp. Gudene se! Denne kamp!
Their war-chief slams his fist against his chest as looks at the sky defiantly, then points at you. “Du ga min kone en kriger dod. Jeg takker deg. La meg RETURNERE FAVORITT!”

He charges.

The Tier 4 Abilities double as end-game powers and 'endings' or the future path of Prince if he survives.

The Black Prince selection is almost exactly what you describe, Witch-King wise. It's essentially control of the Darkness but not tied or aligned with the Dark Father at all.

Same thing. A psychotic unholy warrior makes a poor leader - few would follow them willingly. The Company is bound by no allegiances save to their contract and their own (although they did start as religious warriors)...That sense of zealotry sits poorly with mercs who want to see the next payday.

--------------------------------

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjlBCAx6330

Lowering his shoulder the Jarl barges into you with much the same effect as a bull ramming into a city’s barred gate. He stumbles, but recovers quickly enough to bring his Great Axe in a whirling arc, the bright sheen of the runic blade whistling as it cuts through the air.

”Mine forfedre er smilende på meg, svart djevel. Kan du si det samme?”

The speed with which you duck out of the way can only be described as inhuman. Unnatural. Your pommel slams into brow, cutting open his forehead and letting the blood ruin the vision in his right eye. Another great swing, so slow. You shift your blade side-on, a thin line spurting from his upraised wrist down to almost his armpit. Such a small thin wound at first, but bleeding freely in moments. You’ve killed him already, he just doesn’t know it.

”En Skald frykter ingenting, doden minst av alt!”

}}}DEEAATH? IF ONLY IT WERE THAT EASY, LITTLE SKALD{{{

His whole body jerks, reeling from your pure Menace. The Skalds in the Circle pales and ward themselves against evil, kissing good luck charms or whispering prayers. Even your own men shuffle back nervously. You stand in the Circle, tall as a Giant to all who watch. A towering black monster with eyes that burn like dying suns. The Hero, Jarl Aelthred, ‘Griffin-Slayer, Beast-Bane, Twice-Prince-of-Skald’ … takes a step back.

”Min kjærlighet venter på meg ... På porter ... av Valkenheim ...”

You’re almost impressed, almost any other man would have fled screaming in the face of this malevolent will. The fact that he still stands before you, albeit shaken, does him credit in your eyes. But respect does not mean mercy.

}}}THERE IS NO VALKENHEIM, LITTLE SKALD. ONLY BELOW, AND THE COLD EMBRACE OF THE DARK FATHER.{{{

The Skalds gasp as one. You can’t be sure if the Jarl drops to his knees because his will has finally broken, or due to the loss of the arterial lifeblood flowing from his arm veins. He looks so tired, his grip on the Axe of Ages weak. You plant your blade into the dirt and lean in close, face to face with the ‘fearless’ warrior.

}}}IF YOUR DEAD WIFE WAITS FOR YOU ANYWHERE… PERHAPS IT IS THERE.{{{

”Nei… NEI!”[/i] The bearded warrior shakes his head, wild long hair streaming in the cool wind. Trying to avoid looking into your eyes. Dying suns… You are gentle when you unclasp his helm, taking it off and clutching the Jarl’s head with your steel gauntlets in a merciless vice. Forcing him to look in your eyes. ”NEI! NEYAAAAAAHHHHHH!”

He screams for a long, long time. Far past the point where he should have bled out to a merciful death.

A few gruesome minutes later.

CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara leans over to get a better look at the corpse the downcast Skald men are dragging away. Even you can even call that a corpse.

”Damn.” She whistles. ”The Lieutenant does NOT fek around.”

”That he does not.” Trooper Saint agrees, her mouth dry all of the sudden. ”I… I would not like to die like that.”

”You have a particular way of dying in mind?” CPL White Bitch smirks.

”At the top of the list? Of old age, reading a book in my bed with the sun of my face.” Trooper Saint smiles.

”Ugh, forget I asked.” White Bitch spits. ”Mines better though. About the same, except I’m rich and have 20 young lovers weeping themselves to death over me.”

Trooper Saint and Kid try and fail to stifle a chuckle.

”What? Something funny about that? You deriding a superior, Trooper?” White Bitch barks, but she’s grinning along with them all the same.

A few of the Skalds remain, maybe five. They approach you, the redhaired warrior says some words in their tongue, pointing at the Axe Trooper Kid is currently giving a look over. The rest of the Skald host watches on, eyes to the ground for the most part. Clearly they do not stand with these few.

”De oks aldre er ikke bare skatt eller tyvegods. Vi må returnere det til Aelthred og Astrids sonn. Han vil bære på Jarl navn og ære. Dette er min siste plikt, vil jeg kjempe deg og do hvis jeg må. He holds your gaze unflinchingly. The others are not so bold. Fascinating.

”They say the Axe is of their Jarl’s house. It must come with him, to be given to Aelthred and Astrid’s son.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh frowns as he translates. ”He says this is his last duty. He and his men will fight you and die if he must to see it returned. Honour demands it.”

The red-haired Skald strokes his ginger beard, clearly not enthused at the prospect. But his grip is firm and the men behind him seem determined, albeit clearly shaken.

You are not without honour. You never let it stop you from winning, from getting in the way of a . Perhaps it would make a nice trophy, or the blade could be turned into a different weapon with some skill. But that is your vanity, not necessity. These two, Astrid and Aelthred, died horribly. But they were brave in the face of it. If any corpse deserves some measure of respect, it’s corpses like these.

Besides, that could spark the very battle was whole duel was designed to avoid. You don't want to get your men killed for your own greed, however fine a weapon.

“Let them honour their dead. It cannot be said that these two did not fight with bravery.” You nod at the red-beard, gesturing for Kid to hand it over. ” It takes a strong man to stand before that from which all fear comes. Take this ‘Axe of Ages’ and see that it makes its way to their son. May he be worthy of it.”

The warrior chuckles as CPL Hirstun of Ligh translates, shaking his head while Kid begrudgingly attempts to lift the enormous axe and hand it to one of the waiting Skalds. Two of them take it tentatively, with even greater care than they handled the Jarl’s corpse.

The Skalds are almost finished boarding their longship. Only the red-beard and two others remain ashore. He scratches his unruly facial hair, then laughs out loud. ”Jeg er overrasket! Jeg trodde at jeg ville være doende over denne fekking oks. Mitt navn er Lerrek Jurgensen. Meg selv, Utred og Hans onsker å bli med krigspartiet. Vil du ha oss? The Wildman grins as he extends his hand to you.

”He says his name is Lerrek Jurgensen.” Hirstun tells you. “He and two of his men wish to join you. The others will carry the Axe.”

FYI, that character portrait is from a game called Banner Saga. Plot spoiler below:
That Viking is an enemy, who, after losing to you, asks to join your side with some of his men. If you accept him, he will fight alongside you for a while, but then betray you at the worst possible moment, insta-killing some of your allies and forcing you into a fight, which further weakens you before another crucial battle. Also he tries to rape your daughteru. The guy is an all-around dick.

Sound familiar at all?

That's a general yes to Accept. I'll probably merge the Elite and Courage option. I'm going to walk the dogs and then wrap this thread up in the next couple of posts.

The two fellows will be Troopers, but this Lerrek will be pretty keen to try his hand at the Blackguard Caste. Anything in particular you want to say to these new recruits?
>>1328065
I think you mean this guy.

>>1328061
If they actually sign up and say the words, then you try to get them killed... well that's a pretty dickish move.

A lot less dickish than just killing them right now before they're your brothers in black.
>>
>>1328071
Yeah, a meta-perspective can go every way, you will find lots of examples for any side if you know enough stories.
But this:
>Jeg er overrasket! Jeg trodde at jeg ville være doende over denne fekking oks
"I'm surprised, I thought I'd die over this fecking axe." doesn't sound like a traitor to me (or a very good one)

Run down on the Black Company being family not mercs.

I'm learning Arabic, hence Ajiyimad keeps popping up. A snippet of French lends itself to the Chevalisse. However the Norwegian I owe all to one room-mate that taught me swear words and of course, google translate.

And my Spanish teacher was too much of a babe for me to learn anything properly, so that's pretty dismal.

Still writing up the next post, sorry for the delay.
>>

Damn, i know 4 languages and none of them will ever be used.
Except for french, but with Verdun being dead we'll have to fight some Chevalisse for that.

Although they still need to speak the words and sign in the Annals, you have some new faces. Unless you specifically request, they’ll stick with the Kreigstrom and eventually will be equipped similarly enough. They’d prefer to keep their two-handed axes rather than the giant Zweihanders.
>GAINED 3 Recruits
>Lerrek Jurgensen
>Utred Horst
>Hans Rusti

--------------------------------------

“He seems like a strong fighter. We can always use more meat for the grinder.” Your NCOs nod, it’s not like they’re won’t be bloodshed enough to go around in the future. You grasp Lerrek’s proffered forearm in a firm warrior's handshake. ”Welcome to a lifetime of endless battles. Our very own little ‘Valkenheim of the living’. CPL Hirstun, give them the rundown on how this operates. We’re not your average band of mercenaries. We are brothers, and no one walks away.”

You and a few others leave for Fort Casca up the slope as CPL Hirstun of Ligh and his ‘Dozen’ introduce themselves to the new recruits.

“Mange slåss?”
“Ja. Mye.”

“Mot Neumünster?”

“Ja.”

“Elfin?”

“Dem også.”

“Andre Skald?”

“Hvis vi må.”

“Hva om Wild eller Kalgarri?”

“I tid, kanskje.”

“Jeg har alltid onsket å drepe en Gryphen, eller enda en drage!”

“…Egentlig Dragon kjemper for oss.”

“Hah! Jeg tror jeg er i Valkenheim allerede!”

No worries, if you do something you enjoy it doesn't feel like a chore at all. The only thing I struggle with in worldbuilding is not getting distracted by great ideas for a new setting or quest premise. I'm sticking to this one alone, otherwise quality and time will suffer.

Out of curiosity, what do you speak? 4 languages is pretty damn impressive.

The fort was abandoned. Perhaps the Neumunster had expected the Skald to garrison it, or perhaps their grip over the region was even more tenuous than you suspected. Either way, no one is there to resist your entry aside from a few maintenance workers who have no intention of dying for a dam.

”Beautiful. A masterpiece of Neumunster engineering. CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus stares in wonder at the ‘control room’, a tower floor with an impressive array of turning gears and levers. It’s not Albani work, but it’s pretty awe inspiring for human hands. There is nothing beyond mankind’s grasp with enough pulleys and counterweights.”

”Shame we have to smash it.” CPL White Bitch smirks, clearly not upset at all. ”Yep. Smash-smash-smash into itty-bitty pieces.”

”It is a damn shame!” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus frowns. ”Closing the dams will flood this area, ending Hāastweiser River south of here. It will stop the Skalds coming in by boat yes, but everything… the gardens and all this beautiful engineering. And breaking the mechanism afterwards? No one will ever be able to reverse it, unless they can breath underwater.”

”I’m afraid it can’t be helped, Corporal.” You tell him, absently watching a few Troopers coaxing the workers into sealing the dams. Once they’re done, they’ll be breaking it all so that no one can switch it back. ”We can’t spare the men to garrison this place, and the Skald fleet will be arriving soon. I’d rather we didn’t leave anyone here to offer a reception.”

”Besides, dear ‘Jack’!” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ slings a familiar arm over the rules-stickler with a cheery grin. ”We’re not just killing folk and switching the rulers of this land. Now we’re changing the very land itself! How’s that for a feat to be remembered for?”

”We are indeed changing the very geography of the nation.” ‘Jack’ Marcus raises his eyebrows, not entirely against the notion. ”According to Neumunster Law... the overseeing Expolorator that discovers unmapped bodies of water like this or, technically, creates them... he or she has the absolute, unconditional right to name it."

>"The Undead don't need to breathe, right? We can try to get the Vamps or the Cultists to help reverse the process later, after this war is over... Assuming that any of us still alive by then."

How does flooding the area prevent entry by ship again? Wouldn't that just mean that the Skald fleet can sail even farther inland? I've no expertise in nautical matters.
>>
>>1328162
Water for the flooding has to come from somewhere. Probably whatever artificial inlet that they created that allows a connection between the inland waterways and the sea.

I guess we`re in Fantasy Holland. Which explains why they`re getting BTFO`d so hard.
>>
>>1328162
The ships come from downriver. There'll be no downriver if we block it upstream and make a lake out of it.

The network Fort Casca controls is designed to tame the Haastweiser River into a series of manageable streams and channels.By shutting the entire network (and then breaking the controls so it can't be easily reversed) it effectively kills the southern rivers, trapping all the water here to form a lack. The Skalds could move around this immediate area freely, but a voyage downriver would have been a matter of days not weeks.

This is the last content post for the night. I'll probably still be around to answer questions. I have taken leave off work for next weekend, so we should have a thread both this coming Sunday and the one after that as well.

Thread is archived here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Black%20Company%20Quest
A Vote in the Archive is a Vote for Prince. Merely 1 vote or 20+ of them, it matters not. The Dark Father sees it all.

Good run tonight, gents. I hate you a all little bit for your damnable luck, but it's been a bloody fun ride.
-------------------------

It takes a few moments for that to sink it. Trooper ‘Kid’ pauses suddenly in the middle of licking their rolled cigarette. CPL ‘White Bitch’ snorts in disbelief. SGT ‘Bad Hand chokes on nothing, about to burst into rib-shattering laughter. Trooper ‘Saint’ stares across the river view with a bemused expression. ”Huh… well how about that.”

Your comrades turn to look at you. Put on the spot all of the sudden, you say the first thing that pops into your head.

Who would you like Prince to interact with in particular on the march back to Kresden, or perhaps when you get there?

Fuck White Bitch. Go for a quick sail on our new lake and get some training on sailing from our new recruits. Also interrogate them about what they know about "The Big One" coming up.

Chat up the Archivest with Saint there to make her MORE LOYAL. Because if we can guilt her into betraying her conspirators then we can turn the trap on them. Also, guys, I have to admit. I don't think Saint is the traitor. It all lines up just a little too neatly, don't you think? It's all circumstantial evidence and easy guesswork, we've got nothing solid. Considering how Saint acts normally, it'd be ridiculously easy to pull a frame job on her.

My opinion? It's WB. She's got the know-how of everyone, and a reason for it. A couple of subtle inquiries here, and request or to to help handle some this and thats...and you got a patsy that doesn't even know they just set themselves up.

We're in fantasy holy Roman empire, basically the empire from WHFB, but minus most of the grimdark and chaos(well until we took our contract for the necromancer, but then again, maybe neumunster should have made a better offer?)
The setting has peeps who aren't blatantly retarded-unlike the 40k counterpart-If QM didn't see some of the lore similarities while he was digging up the images of those empire greatswords he dug up for the kriegstrom then he is not the GM I thought he was.

>"Didn't you say the exact same thing to Lance-Corporal Eyesworth before he took an arrow to the throat at Weylan River?"

>"...Yes well, as I recall my phrasing to him was more along the lines of 'whiff of fate'. Not the same thing at all."

>"Right, so if Eyesworth gets an arrow to the throat for his 'whiff of fate' what do I get for my 'scent of destiny'?
>Crossbow to the heart, trebuchet to the balls?"

>You see a ghost of a smile dance across the daemon-child's eyes, his sharp-toothed smile turning genuine for a moment.

Tbh, I think if shes actually the traitor, then she is seriously doubting whether her probable strategy of "take heir and run" would work now, especially after our GLORIOUS GLORY earlier.

If anything, Id say she was even more convinced not to fuck us over. Seriously, that was the chieftain and his wife of a tribe of one of the most disgustingly powerful races out there. And we left one of them as a sack of meat and the other as a much less sacky pile of meat.
