It's time for some VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/Jr8bbA3L

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ.

"Cap. Caaaaaaaaaap."

"Mrbglglglr." You snort as you're roused from your sleep by the stern but very familiar sound of your wife's voice. "Five more minutes."

"Five minutes and we're going to be at the station already!" Sam tuts, hands on her hips like a disappointed teacher. "I've already let you nap as long as possible!"

"Fine, fine." You groan as you slide out of your bed, now used to the clacking and bumping of the train as it rolled over freshly laid track. Honestly, it was the train part you were used to. You just weren't used to sleeping in an actual bed while riding a train.

Then again, when Karla's paying for the ticket, she'd never settle for anything less than first class.

"You know, did Karla ever tell you anything else other than she needed to see you right now?" Sam asks as you get yourself washed up and shaved. How the hell could they fit a whole private bathroom in a train car!?

"No, she just said we needed to come to Belka urgently, and discreetly." You shrug. "Besides, there's no reason for her to backstab us or anything, if that's what you're afraid of."

"No, I'm just nervous about what's going on that she feels the need to hire us out." Sam shakes her head and motions to the opulent luxury train suite you were both staying in. "And this hardly seems 'discreet' to me."

"Belka stills puts a lot of stock in royal bloodlines." You shrug as you get yourself dressed. "They see a high class train car like this and they don't ask questions."

"Uh huh, and they company we're bringing?" Sam raises an eyebrow at you.

"What, Ramirez, Tarin, and Alek are all perfectly capable. You should know that."

"I'm not talking about THEM." Sam narrows her eyes.

Oh. OH.

I don't want to remember the sequel. The waifufags were the worst. There was no reason to shoehorn in romance.

Also that time with the terrible rolls. I thought we were going to lose a character who was going to get experimented on and turned against us. That's when we have fight her and turn her back to our side.

But no, it didn't happen.

"Oh come on, Belkans love tanks!" You laugh as you kiss Sam on the cheek. "I don't think Julia and Fenrir will be a problem!"

"Uh huh." Sam eyes you, not convinced at all. "If there are damages, it's coming out of your pocket, got that?"

"Understood"

You and Sam then exit your little suite and head to the next car over, which was the dining car. There, having already beaten you to the table was Grandma herself, casually reading a newspaper.

"It's about time we got here." She grumbles from behind the paper. "You know, if we took Qyburn's flying contraption, we would've been here in a few hours instead of a few days!"

"Grandma..." Sam rolls her eyes. "You do realize that... 'airplane' is completely untested and crashed half the time, right?"

"Of course! It makes the ride exciting!" Grandma retorts.

"Uuuuugh." Sam groans and looks to you for support.

I remember--it's been years ago, now, hasn't it?--that in the first threads of VMQ2 there was a bandied about idea about mashing together the VC setting with a Modern Warfare-tilted campaign.

But whether or not Merc wants to do that is up to him--didn't he wanna run a fantastical settinged quest still? That one's been on teh backburner for forever.

"I dunno, you DID make it sound pretty exciting..." You admit.

"Should've known. You're both related, after all." Sam sighs. "Well, what's done is done. We should be arriving any-"

The air is then pierced by the high pitched shrill of a train whistle warning the occupants that the vehicle was beginning to slow down. On the platform, you could see a row of armored knights standing guard. While they were all visibly armed with polearms, you could also see more modern submachine guns strapped in holsters on their sides. Guess some old habits died hard, even in the newly reconstructed Belka.

"Well, you two go on, I'll make sure your subordinates are ready!" Grandma shoos you and Sam away towards the exit. "Go!"

You and Sam head for the door, and you lean in close to her.

"Hey, just heads up, but knowing Karla, she's probably come to greet us personally, so, uh, just be cool, okay?"

"Oh?" Sam turns to you with a very artificial smile. "Are you implying that I'm a helpless little girl that can't rein in my own emotions and have a perfectly well mannered, mature conversation with another woman?"

"Uhhhh, not at all." You shake your head quickly.

"I thought so, too!" Sam's smile becomes more genuine and mischievous.

Finally, the two of you exit the train car, where you're stopped in your tracks by the blaring of royal trumpets timed perfectly to your arrival.

"Jager! Sam! It's been so long!" Karla strides forward, a big smile on her face.

"Karla!" You smile and stride forward, wrapping her up in a bear hug like the two of you were kids again.

Karla yelps in surprise, which causes all of the gathered soldiers to flinch in a defensive reflex. Thankfully, they're quickly defused by a hasty wave from Karla.

"Still as forward as ever, I see!" She laughs.

"Hasn't changed a bit." Sam nods in agreement.

"Oh, and you brought Fenrir, too!" Karla's eyes flash as she observes your unit's signature tank being offloaded from the cargo car. "Simply exceptional!"

"So uh, I don't want to be the party pooper here, but can you tell us why you called us here?" Sam asks, a bit impatient.

"Of course, of course, this way!" Karla snaps her fingers and the sea of guards instantly parts to allow passage through. Karla moves at a quick pace, her long legs giving her a rather large stride giving the considerably shorter Sam a bit of trouble to keep up. You sort of wonder if she was doing this on purpose or not.

Regardless, Karla guides you into a waiting limousine, flanked by a pair of gaudily painted Belkan tanks, and the three of you take a seat inside.

"Anyways, about the matter I wanted to discus..." Karla sighs, as she's finally able to let go of her public mask, her face now fraught with concern and frustration. "It appears that I, or more accurately Belka, am in need of some help."

"Well, that's what our little company does, solve problems." You nod. "What do you need us to trash?"

"Not a thing, a who." Karla reaches into her coat and pulls out a small folder, handing it directly to Sam. "A rather distant uncle of mine has gotten a few... ideas about how Belka should be run. Ideas that could prove very disruptive to our recovery efforts."

"I take it this uncle of yours is a Royalist?" Sam looks up from the folder.

Oh yeah, the Royalists. Part of Belka's surrender conditions to the Federation was that the country transition from a monarchy to a democracy. While Karla was fine with it, there were a small number of Belkans violently opposed to the change, who formed a sort of 'resistance' group to reform the monarchy. Though according to Karla, they were just a bunch of thugs and criminals looking for an excuse to rebel.

"He is." Karla nods. "Before, the Royalist movement never manged to gain much traction since with me and my father's abdication, there are no suitable alternatives to take the throne. My dear old Uncle, though, had been exiled to he Empire quite a number of years ago, and now it seems he fancies himself the new King of Belka."

"I don't know, we're mercenaries, not assassins." You frown. "Plus, you know, you're not really known for being discreet."

"Which is exactly why I'm turning to you for help." Karla sighs. "My knights are brave and bold, but the kind of battle this requires is beyond even their immeasurable skill. I need someone unconventional, someone who can get results not matter how stacked the odds are against them, and the only person I know of that can do that is you."

"Um, thanks?" You blink. "But still, it doesn't feel right just targeting this guy."

"He's simply a military and political asset that unfortunately has taken the form of a human being." Karla waves her hand disdainfully. "Trust me, if you knew the man, you wouldn't miss him."

"Well..." Sam leans forward, a little glint in her eyes. "What kind of compensation can we expect?"

"Money is no object if that's what you want." Karla turns her gaze to Sam and hands her a note. "Do this, and you'll be paid a king's ransom."

Sam's eyes then widen and she turns to you.

"Well, I have no objections."

Typical.

"I suppose we can take this request." You sigh.

"Excellent!" Karla smiles. "My spies inform me that my dear Uncle plans to smuggle himself across the border on an armored train. You can choose to hit the train in transit, or when it stops at the station. Your choice."

Thankfully, you're able to hold your own during the impromptu dinner party, downing glass after glass of wine. Fortunately, Tarin and Julia prove to be most level headed and avoid alcohol altogether, while Ramirez and Alek avail themselves just a bit.

Sam, though. Oh dear, poor Sam was generally a girl with a great deal of self control, but she just couldn't resist a good drink aaaaaand, made a bit of fool of herself, much to Karla's amusement.

So in the end, both you and Karla worked together to carry Sam to your quarters. Sam was already sound asleep, though not quite fully clothed, unfortunately.

"She's quite the party girl." Karl giggles as you tuck her in.

"Yeah, she is." You grin nostalgically.

"Hey, there's still some time." You say as you sit down on your side of the bed. "You wanna talk?"

Karla pauses for a few long seconds before nodding meekly.

"I suppose so." She says as she sits down next to you. "What do you want to talk about?"

"So how's the kingdom going?" You ask.

"Are you really that curious?" Karla ponders.

"Well, it's been at least... what? Two, three years since the war ended?" You sigh. "We were a bit busy on our end getting our company set up, so I couldn't really pay attention to foreign affairs."

"Understandable. I haven't been keeping up with Gallian matters as much as I should have, either." Karla grins. "But yes, the kingdom has been rather stable. I feared the worst when we signed that treaty with the Federation, but I guess my word carries a bit more weight than I thought."

"How does your dad feel about basically giving up being a king?" You wonder.

"Oh, he absolutely loves it. He's on vacation in Emmeria, actually." Karla snorts. "But yes, with the Knights, we've been able to keep the country safe and stable."

"I take it they're not holding any grudges."

"Ha! Half the reason why I didn't tell anybody you were coming is because they'd all climb over each other to get the chance to duel you again!" Karla laughs, a genuine one. "The only group of men I've seen fight each other harder are my suitors!"

"Um... I'm honored I guess?" You frown.

"Don't worry, it's fine!" Karla laughs. "Still, I'll have to go attend to some state business tomorrow, so one of my attendants will lead you to your ambush point."

"Thanks." You grin. "Good night, Karla."

"Good night." Karla gets up and kisses you on the forehead. "Best of luck."

"Thanks."

...

...

"Uggggggh, my head." Sam groans as she FINALLY stirs awake.

You and Ramirez had to load her in the truck Karla had loaned you. Tarin and Alek were already set up in scouting positions, while Julia had Fenrir set up in a low gully near the tracks and out sight.

"Wakey wakey, sleepyhead." You chuckle as you hand her a canteen.

"Jeez, what happened?" Sam groaned as she takes a deep pull from the canteen. "All I remember is us getting off the train..."

"You got yourself drunk. Again." You grunt.

"God fucking damnit." Sam curses. "How do you do it, Cap?"

"Years of training." You joke. "And a muscular physique."

"Fuck you!" Sam giggles as she punches you in the shoulder. "So what's the sitch?"

"We're at the ambush point." You explain. "The train should be coming at any moment."

"And what's the ambush method?" Sam asks.

"Well, Tarin's already planted some demo charges on the tracks." You inform her. "Though Julia's itching for some action and she's saying she wants to go tanko to traino."

"Are you serious?" Sam groans and looks to you. "And are you serious about entertaining her on that idea?"

"Yes, yes I am." You say somewhat proudly. "Julia! Operation Train Joust is go!"

"Awesome!" Julia cheers as you can see Fenrir's engines smoke and roar as the battle tank crawls its way out of the little dip, plopping itself directly on the tracks.

And in the nick of time, too. You could hear the distant rumble of an oncoming train...

You, Tarin, Ramirez, and Alek wait in hiding as Julia brings Fenrir into an attack position, nestled just after a bend in the tracks so that the conductor won't see what's coming until it's too late.

And right on time, the train rounds the bend. Typical of Imperial and Belkan design, the train was basically just a really, REALLY big tank on tracks instead of treads. The engine was a giant wall of armor and steel, like a massive battering ram meant to knock aside potential obstacles, while the cars behind it were similarly armored and also sported their own heavy guns and MG ports. Certainly a formidable foe.

But not nearly as formidable as the armored monster that was Fenrir. One blast of its mighty cannon sends an HVAP round drilling right through the nose of the train engine. The whole thing explodes in flame like a gasoline filled balloon, and the whole train begins to screech to a halt, now deprived of its main propulsion.

"FUCK YEAH, MOTHERFUCKERS!" Julia cheers.

"Oh my fucking god it actually worked." Sam blinks.

Those guys inside the train had to be mighty shaken by now.

"Everyone go go go!" You bark as you break cover and charge the train. Tarin and Ramirez follow close, while Alek of course hangs behind on overwatch. Sam also follows, lugging her heavy lance. Like a well oiled machine, your squad surges forward.

Up ahead, Tarin makes quick motions to two of the cars. One looked to be some sort of mobile barracks, while the other was a type of fancy passenger car. No doubt belonging to Karla's dear old Uncle.

No witnesses. Not that there'd be any great ramifications with Karla backing this and all. I just feel this is safer too. Between Tarin and Ramierez if he runs we can find him. And with the tank we can find him fast.

>Sorry about the delay!

"Go for the passenger car!" You order, pointing to the more opulent looking car.

"Breaching!" Sam dashes forward, her lance at the ready. All of you give a wide berth as she crouches down and lets loose a lance, launching it straight through the armored door of the passenger car. There's a bright flash as the passenger car is filled with flame and light. However, you had to be sure the target was down. Immediately, Tarin and Ramirez swoop in. A guard, dazed and confused, staggers into the fresh opening, only to be immediately taken down by a crack shot by Alek.

Tarin and Ramirez, both freakishly in tune as ever, nod to each other and without a word, both toss frag grenades through the shattered windows. Another explosion.

Now it was your turn. You heft your Var mk3 and charge into the breach...

You leap in, gun at the ready, but almost instantly, you see a flash of steel, and you're barely able to dodge out of the way of the sword swipe. While you avoid any sort of damage, you do lose the grip on your gun as the wielder almost effortlessly disarms you.

"I should have figured my cowardly niece would send her Gallian dog at me." Karla's dear old uncle sneers, his sword pointed at you.

Well, this was a bit of a tough position. Sure, you could probably take this guy on, even without a weapon, but time was a bit of a factor here...

Karl's Uncle follows up by swinging his sword down in a vertical slash, clearly intending this to be the finishing blow. However, you just grin and raise your arms...

...and catch the blade with your hands with a loud CLANK.

"W-what?!" Karla's Uncle blinks, bewildered.

"Armored gloves. You didn't think I wouldn't come prepared?" You chuckle darkly and with one quick twist you snap his blade in half with your bare hands.

"W-wait! Mercy!" Karla's Uncle blubbers as he falls back on his ass and starts scrambling away. "Whatever Karla is paying you, I'll double it! TRIPLE it!"

"Sorry, a job's a job." You sigh as you drop your pack, which contained the last of your demolition charges, all set on timers. "It's gotta be this way."

"No, NOOOOOO!" The Uncle wails as you leap clear of the passenger car and roll down the embankment. Tarin and Ramirez know what's coming and duck down as well.

The passenger car then explodes brilliantly, sending debris and fire flying. At the same time, Julia fires another shell, completely demolishing the barracks car as well, leaving the whole train a burning wreck.

"Well, that was a lot simpler than I thought it would be." Sam muses as she helps you back up to your feet, the glow of fire making her look almost angelic.

"Yeah, well, big pay for simple work. Isn't that how it should be?" You grin.

"You know, I had my doubts, but I think we can make this PMC thing work." Sam gives you that special look with her eyes.

"Of course we can." You say as you lean down and kiss her.

"Every single time." Julia groans over the radio.

"Hey, at least it's healthy." Ramirez chuckles. "And at least they don't fuck on the spot."

"I'm getting a feeling that was aimed at me." Alek grumbles over the radio.

"I mean, you gotta admit, Elsa doesn't seem to have any sort of decency." Ramirez continues to prod the sniper.

"You do realize you're talking shit about the girlfriend of a guy who can kill you from over a thousand meters away?"

Tarin just watches on silently, as she tended to do.

Goddamn, you loved your job.
