"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

You are Lieutenant 'Prince'. A seasoned NCO of the Black Company that, through a cruel twist of fate, found yourself landed with an officer's commission. Now you find yourself in command of the 7th Kiregstrom Shocktroopers, a position with more responsibility and scrutiny than you ever wanted.

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
Following the fall of the Neumunster city of Sarsburg several weeks ago, your Employer has sent his unholy host spread throughout the entirety of the western and northern reaches of the Neumunster Nation. While the main part of the Company and the undead went west to Oxenfurt Bridge, you were tasked with the seizure of the northern town of Kresden.

You've done that. And better yet you've taken it almost entirely intact, protecting both buildings and inhabitants alike from the violence (sort of) and the unsavoury attentions of your own reinforcements (mostly). And now the whole of what's left of Northern Nuemunster stretches before you undefended. It's time to project force from your secure town and bring the crumbling 'Empire' to heel.

Three days have passed since you marched out of Kresden. Yesterday you cemented your Black reputation by brutally disposing of not one but two renowned Skald warriors, in a manner no one is likely to forget.

You spent the night at a quickly-flooding Fort Casca to make sure the southern half of the Hāastweiser River has died off enough to prevent a Skald fleet from using it. Now begins the two-day march back to the relative safety of Kresden.

Despite somewhat distracted by concerns of a plot to free the boy-heir by a traitor that you suspect is Saint, you make sure to devote some time fretting about how the other missions are proceeding.

Midnight the previous Evening, The Abbey of the Mother

Dead leaves rustled in the cold winds outside the once-quiet Abbey. There were no stars in the night’s sky when Lord Lorgia and his creatures struck.

“Heigelen Guard! Stand your ground!”Saint-Captain Kamps shouts, as if they had any ground left to give. A Bloodknight’s fist sank elbow deep into the stomach of the Heigelen beside him, seizing the opportunity gifted to him by the death of his comrade the Captain struck off the creature’s arm with his Moonlight Blade, its head following soon after with a flick of the wrist. The empty armour clattered to the white Abbey tiles in a cloud of ash giving the holy men some much-needed breathing room. There were precious few of them left standing, perhaps a score of Heigelen and Chevalisse crowded around the Mother’s Altar against a similar number of immortal vampiric predators, a match they could ill-afford. Saint-Captain Kamp’s gritted his teeth and another one of his Heigelen men crumpled, scream cut off as gleaming white fangs sank into his side, wrist and throat. They only had to hold a few moments longer. He forced his way to the front of the Heigelen Guard as they started chanting in their guttural Neumunster accents. An old war mantra, old when the Neumunster Empire itself was still young.

”Meine Liebe für die Mutter der Trauer! Mein Hass für den Vater des Rasens! Mein Leben für den Sohn der Hoffnung!” The cry is taken up by all the surviving Heigelen; they refuse to go into death’s cold embrace quietly, determined to take a few of these foul creatures down with them. ”Für Skarling Kronebrecher! Für das Vaterland!”

”Go, garcon! Allez!” Ser Gabrielle of the Order of the Bloody Rose practically had to shove the young newly-initiated Holy Warrior down the escape hatch behind the fighting, a panic tunnel not included on the plans for surely the creatures must have had inside information to make it so far undetected into the Abbey. The young paladin looks stricken at the thought of leaving his comrades, the small bundle clutched tight against his chest.

”I cannot leave you like this! One more worthy than I should take my place!”

So young and full of fire, Ser Gabrielle sighed. He would have made a fine Paladin had they had the chance to complete his training.

”I am afraid not, mon ami. It would not do to leave my brothers to die such a glorious death alone. I am sorry such a burden must befall one so young, but the Tears are yours. Go, I say! And remember us!”

Ser Gabrielle slammed the trapdoor and ducked as one of the fanged undead swiped a claw inches above his head. The foul thing got a burst of pure Light in return, dissipating into salt and ash even as it was flung screeching into the rafters. Ser Gabrielle stepped in front of the altar beside Saint-Captain Kamps, the Heigelen Guard veteran bleeding from a fresh cut above his forehead. He helped one of the wounded Chevalisse Knights up by the arm, addressing his own men in their native noble-tongue as the Heigelen continued their chant.

“Ne soyons pas dépassés par noscamarades Neumunster! Chersamis, chantez avec moi!”The noble Chevalisse Knights of the Bloody Rose begin to sing, a defiantly jovial bittersweet tune in the face of their encroaching doom. ”Ne pleurez pas pour moi, ma mère. Vousavez déjà pleuré. La mort n'est pas la fin que vousvoyez...”

The tall and impossibly beautiful vampire leaders, a scowling female and a grinning male, regarded the handful of singing men disdainfully. The male leader hefted his cruel blade and the vampires howled into the starless sky as they rushed the last mortal men.

--------------------------------------------------

A mile downriver, caked in mud and debris to cover his scent, the soaking wet Paladin-in-training huddled in the dark. He shivered in the cold as he watched the Abbey of the Mother braze bright, like a beacon in the dark. He would never forget.

Fulfil the Mission. He cannot let the sacrifice of his brothers be in vain. He must protect the Tears of the Mother, no matter the cost to his person or pride.

Avenge the Dead. He would not let this injustice against his brothers go unanswered. No matter how steep the price, he would vanquish the vampire siblings responsible.

Depending on the level of their feeding frenzy, most of the vampires might not care to track down one man in favor of twenty more. They did just get their choice feast denied to them.

This is why we have brothers keeping watch on the river, obviously.

Yup, mind you the boss man and lady vampire probably are somewhat more disposed to getting a fantastic relic than another feast. Who knows though, just pure baseless speculation on my end.

According to the roll two threads ago, the Vampires failed to retrieve the Relic but did strike a blow against Chevalisse morale by razing such a significant holy site to the ground.

The young initiate’s knuckles tightened over his sword hilt, but he stilled it. Rage was useless here.

To throw his life away, and doom the Mission, after all his brothers-in-arms had sacrificed for it… that would do them dishonour. He understood now, his life was not his own. Vengence came second to their holy task… He would protect the Tears of the Mother. No matter the cost.

It was a long night for the adolescent man, lying belly down in the mud as he heard bats, wolves and far darker things scurry sniffling in the woods around him. When the first glimmer of the sun finally rose over the horizon… all that remained was the burnt out ruins of the Abbey of the Mother.

The juvenile said one last prayer, hoping his brothers found peace, and stepped off heading South.

16 hours before and several leagues away. Ajiyimad Mercernaries and 2nd Platoon Rangers,‘The Grundi Brother’s Mobile Shoppe of Arms, Armaments & Armour Repairs’, Albani Workshop

LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams believed that his mission was going rather well. The Albani rifelmen on the rooftop had been worrying, but the marksmanship of his rangers were keeping the enemy’s head down. Already his platoon and the Ajiyimad boys were scaling up the side of the building, an odd structure that seemed to be made as much of pipes and chimneys as it was made of tiles and brickwork.

The indignant Albani shouts seemed to be as much directed at each other as they are at the foe scaling the walls.

At the 2:15 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiwiuDW52hY

”The stunty bastards never could stop fighting between themselves long enough to tackle anyone else.” The 2nd Platoon Lieutenant yells with smug confidence. ”It’s why they got their arses kicked from one side of Albani to the other! Go power through Rangers!”

The Ranger LT’s encouragement was cut off by the sudden rumbling beneath his feet. LT Shaftie’s eyes widened in horror An Albani Warmachine activating from within? This they were NOT equipped for.

”Move it, you shits! Get up and in there before they activate the fekking thing!”

The Rangers and Ajiyimad merc both redouble their efforts. No one wanted to deal with a fully activated Albani Warmachine. The smartest of their number moved fast, but not quite as fast as the rest... better they got their ahead of them if it was already operational after all. A few moments of frantic clambering way interrupted by a burst of flame from one of the dozen downward-facing chimneys. Two Rangers and an Ajiyimad merc are completely incinerated in a moment. The flame doesn’t stop spewing out to LT Shaftie’s amazement. A booming Albani voice, almost certainly amplified by some peculiar magik, causes him to wince at the noise.

“Lansarea activat. Amorsarea aprindere secundară. Hang on, you ninnies.”

The building itself began to rise off of the ground.

The Rangers halfway up the shop’s walls needed no further encouragement, rappelling down or simply leaping from the middle of their climb to hit the ground rolling. The last one, another Zakashi sister, hissed in pain at her landing, clutching her ankle. The wiry brown woman stumbled, the Ajiyimad mercs not pausing in their escape to even glance her way. LT ‘Shaftie’ hissed in frustration, looks like finishing the climb wasn’t going to happen. He leaped down from his line, draginging the Zakashi sister out of the way of one of the mobile supports… or legs…. The giant Albani workshop reared up on its spindly steel supports like a drunk spider and takes a massive step forward.

”Holy… fekking… shit…” LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams was rooted to the spot of the towering workshop. The adds weren’t lying, it really was mobile.

The Zakashi sister he was half-carrying, half-dragging grunted in agreement as the Albani voice booms out again.

”Navă departe! Nu! Himli you idiot don’t touch that you’ll doom us al-“KKKRSSH.

The mysterious voice dies out. Moments later the engines begin to stutter and the whole structure pitched forward as one of it's 'legs' gave way… No building survives a drop from 50 feet. Certainly not one with combustible working parts.

”My men report that nothing salvageable survived the crash. Is that the word for this, naam? A crash?” The unflappable Turncoat Prince and a soot-covered LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams watch their men continue to pick over the wreckage. No Albani work, or Albani workers for that matter, survived. ”What will you be telling LT ‘Prince’ about this?”

----------------------------------------

”I… I think I might amend the report slightly.”

”The important bit. Objective completed.”

”The important bit. Objective completed.” LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams held the Ajiyimad exiles gaze until the other looked away.

The dark-skinned Crown-Prince frowned at the Ranger LT, and the three figures covered in cloth beside him. These Black Company men had such odd notions of victory and death.

”Hmph. Foreigners…”

Manzer Pass, Early this Morning

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGrxHO-B2TY

”Seven-hundred Saints I wish these elves would shut up already.” Staff-Sergeant Mikel to his superior as they watched the column pass by.

The Twelfth Legionnaires kept good order. There weren’t many off them left after several years facing against the Wild, but every damn one of them was a grim hard-faced veteran of many skirmishes. Their dulled yellow colours and re-patched uniforms did not reflect the steel and hardness of the men within.

”Mmm.” Major Lupzig mumbled, his eyes focusing on something else.

The Elves were not so muted as their shorter-lived comrades. Singing a jaunty tune to the sound of flute and drum, they marched proudly in their bright colours of red and blue with their arbalests shouldered and hats slouched to the right. Latest fashion in Helenwood, apparently. Few of the Neumunster men complained though, the elf-girls hospitality more than made up for the elf-men’s eccentricities.

”I mean, they’re damn good marksmen now doubt and deadly with those corssbows of theirs. But would it kill them to demonstrate a little noise discipline? And why such garishly bright colours? Bleh.”

”Mmm.” The Major mumbled again, squinting his eyes. ”Tell me, Sergeant, you’ve gone though Manzer Pass with me before, yes?”

”Yes, sir.”

”Do you recall seeing a Dragon statue halfway through the chasm at the top? Damn lifelike looking thing.” The Major stroked his moustache approvingly.

”Dragon statue, sir?” The Staff-Sergeant’s eyebrows furrowed. He looked up, his eyes widening. The ‘statue’ moved, spreading it’s massive wings and taking flight above the tightly packed column, ”…Oh. Fek me…”

The men had faced Wyverns, Griffins and other winged terrors from the Wild. Dragons were another matter, they cared nothing for the Wild King’s wars or the affairs of Man. The Elven Arbalests had left their strings safely stored in their pouches to avoid weathering. It would only have taken a few moments to apply them and have the weapons cocked and ready. Every mortal eye on that swooping terror bearing down on them knew they did not have a few moments.

All it took was once pass.

----------------------------------------------------

The smell of cooked meat filled Asgorga’s nostrils. Over a hundred crispy elves and men roasted before him, little fires still dotting the canyon. With some chagrin he noticed that he, a noble Draconic beast, was salivating like a baser creature. Still… he was feeling quite ravenous….

The Prince had said no eating people, better not test the limits of that command.

The Prince meant that he should eat no one on -their side-, surely? Just a nibble then.

Yes. He was operating alone out here, and that meant the necessity of interpreting commands. Asgorga was sure there was some human justification for it, but really he was hungry and it all smelled so enticing. This is the kind of glorious display of his power, and well earned reward, he had been imagining.

Oh look, one of them is still wriggling. If Asgorga could grin he would have.

Over a hundred soldiers reduced to ash and burnt meat in seconds…

Staff-Sergeant Mikel knew the burns were bad because he couldn’t feel most of them. He could feel the flesh sloughing off his trembling arm. One of his legs was twitching involuntarily, some serious nerve damage then. He’d probably be dead soon. By the Saints, he hoped so. This Afternoon, At one of the many Kresden Province Granaries

Ludwig the Elder watched the last of the figures recede over the hill. Soldier dressed in black, robed heretics and their lifeless automatons. He shivered, glad to see them go.

”I don’t get it, Da.” Said Ludwig the Younger, scratching his head ”I thought for sure they’d take what they could and burn the rest.”

”Maybe they are planning on coming back, picking up the rest?” His father responded, eyeing the grain sacks. They’d taken a lot, true. But not even half. There was still plenty of it left.

”I dunno, Da… they killed the guards and all for it. Wouldn’t they think someone would be helping themselves to what’s left unguarded?” The boy didn’t look convinced.

Ludwig the Elder wasn’t too concerned with the whys and wherefores though. With this grain, even a fraction of it, they’d make it through this winter. His wife Marte would weep for joy, little Sofia was looking sicklier and hungrier every day lately.

He turned to Ludwig the Younger.

”Go to the Morsin’s. Ask if you can borrow a cart and any spare hands.” There was food enough here for the whole village. Maybe they’d all make it through the winter after all, together.

”Son, let’s keep this between us. Bring up the cart, No need to let anyone know.” That food could last his family 10 winters and then some. Enough to live well, enough to turn a profit even.

Oh man I know we possibly have a small pox blanket situation here but I'd still think they would do the right thing even if it unknowingly doomed more. Maybe this is more of a hearts and minds thing, or having making peasants fight the army of the "Good guys" to keep their limited food, but probably not

”Go to the Morsin’s. Ask if you can borrow a cart and any spare hands.”

”Da?” Ludwig the Younger looked like he was about to say something as he frowned at the grain crates, but then clearly thought better of it.

”You gotta do right by your fellow man, son.” Ludwig the Elder nodded, angry at himself for even thinking of the alternative. How could he even consider letting good folk starve while he had their salvation right here? ”You’ll see one day, my boy. Good things come to those who do good to others.”

Maybe it was true, maybe it wasn’t. Ludwig the Elder didn’t know for sure. But he did know that raising his boy right meant teaching him that much. Do right by your neighbours and they’ll do right by you.

Yesterday Midday, Kresden Main Gatehouse

”Hey Leeds…” The milky-eyed young Tassenland recruit asked to his post-mate. Long hours atop the gatehouse tended to lead to idle conversation.

”Yeah?” Private Leeds was only a few years older than Private Lederlingen, but he acted like it was decades. They hadn’t recruited him on the second draft, nevermind the first, due to him only have half a deformed hand on his left side. They weren’t too picky these days.

”Why are we here?” The younger recruit asked wistfully.

”Wow. That’s a particularly insightful question.” Private Leeds scratched his chin thoughtfully. ”I guess that begs the question as to whether here, fighting for… You-Know-Who… is the right side, or just the winning side? We Tassenland weren’t doing to well before ‘the agreement’, losing all those guys in the drafts. Dying faster than the lords could muster and equip them, they were.”

”My brother was in the second-draft.” Private Lederlingen muttered sadly. ”Haven’t heard from him since he left…”

”Exactly, you see my point! ‘Bad guys’ is a term that fails to encompasitate the intricatiquities of the word. Take this Lieutenant ‘Prince’ of theirs. Massive fek-off sword, black armour and eyes that look like he’ll kill ya as soon as look at ya. Scary bastard, right? You'd think he's the walking definition of evil, or something.”

”Yeah…”

”But his men have looked after us, sort of y'see? Clothes, boots. Weapons that won’t snap from a stiff breeze. But most of all…” Private Leeds looks around conspiratorially. ”How many guys have we lost to the Vampires since –he- started calling the shots?”

”…”

”Exactly! So really… we’re dying less with these guys around. That’s why we’re here-“ The Private jerked a thumb vaguely towards the Necromancer-held East. ”And not over there.” He finished, pointing out to the Free Alliance-held West.

”Right…” Private Lederlingen frowns. ”I meant why are we –here- though? On the wall?”

Private Leeds deflated like a burst pigskin, or his hyped up enthusiasm for conversation did at least.

… *sigh* To watch for anyone coming this way.”

”Oh, okay. Anyone right?” Private Lederlingen chewed his words in a typical farmboy accent, as if carefully considering every word before saying it.

”Yes. Anyone.” At this point Private Leeds couldn’t even care enough to get annoyed.

”So we should let someone know about that column with the blue-haired lady coming this way?”

”We-… huh?” Private Leeds’ eyes widened, snapping between Private Lederlingen and whatever he was looking at.

”I’m just saying, she looks important and that flag kind of looks like this ‘Prince’ guys. Anyway what was all that stuff about sides and evil, did you want to talk about... it...”

Private Leeds was already sprinting off to tell Lieutenant Dollin, or better yet one of the Black Company Troopers still left around to supervise them.

Mid-Afternoon, Present Time, A Day’s March from Fort Casca

There’s something therapeutic about everything going according to plan. No wounded. No dead. Hell, you gained 3 recruits that look like they can handle themselves in a fight. As far as missions go, this went pretty damn well. You find yourself dropping back from the front of the column sometime in the march, stepping in alongside CPL Hirstun of Ligh. You’ve come to rely on the old war dog, you’re surprised you haven’t talked to one-on-one much since assuming command of the 7th.

”You fought alongside the Skald in the Northern Coast Campaign, didn’t you CPL Hirstun?”

”That I did, sir. Honourable men, had your back in any fight and would shout you the first round once the dying was done. No other ally would have stuck with us against those odds for as long as they did.” The aging veteran shrugs. ”More fool them, the Free Northern Coast was a lost cause before the fighting ever started. I only wish that it hadn’t taken so many dead friends for me to see it.”

There’s not much you can say to that. A few quiet moments pass between the two of you, the dull thump of heavy boots stepping in unison the only thing that breaks the silence.

------------------------------

>”Still a lost cause now with how the war is going? Neumunster isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be.” [Clever]

>”You made quite a name for yourself even before you joined up with us. Why do they call you Hirstun ‘of Ligh’?” [Courage]

>”Why are your men called ‘The Dozen’? Even on the other side we had heard stories about them.” [Experience]

>”A seasoned warrior like you must know a trick or two. Any advice on swordplay?” [Elite]

”Still a lost cause now with how the war is going?" You say with a raised eyebrow."Neumunster isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be.”

”Hah, fek that! I can’t tell you how long I held on to that cause. Like a fekking fanatic, Godric Gold swears black-and-blue there were posters of me in Sarsport and Wemdholme. ‘A Free Northern Coast, a land to call our own’. What a load of shit.” The greying soldier hacks out another bitter laugh.

”I don’t know when it happened, sonny, maybe it didn’t happen all at once, but I stopped one day and realised that I wasn’t fighting for a cause anymore. I was fighting to settle a score, the kind of score that just keeps on piling up. Kill some Neumunster for killing my people. Then kill some more Neumunster for killing more of my people for killing some of their people. And on and on and on. Lost track of all the scores eventually. Just kept killing Neumunster, as if I hadn’t already tried that for a solution.” CPL Hirstun of Ligh laughs again, a laugh more tired than bitter. His white whiskers droop almost comically with his frown. ”Thought I’d outgrown that to be fekking honest, boy. Shrugged off my scores and and old grudged when I signed on with this outfit. But here I am in the end… still killing Neumunster…”

”Don’t know why I’m talking to a young whippersnapper like you about this. Never helps to pick at old wounds… Better still to prevent fresh ones.” The old man eyes you warily, his lips pursed. ”Don’t beat around the bush, boy. If you’re keening for some training this old geezer will show you a thing or two when we harbour up.”

”That’s ‘Sir’, not ‘boy’ CPL Hirstun. Least not until he tells you otherwise.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien growls half-heartedly as he approaches, the old man holds up a hand as a halfway apology in turn. ”Prince, CPL ‘White Bitch’ has returned from forward recon. Decent place to harbour up for the night according to her, hilled and far enough from the treeline to her liking.”

Your old friend shrugs, as if a night’s rest was an optional matter. Which really, it could be if you were feeling particularly heartless.

”We could push on a bit further, look for another spot. Or we could just keep marching on through the night if you feel like being a bastard and don’t mind fatigue and whinging tomorrow.”

-------------------------------

>”Let’s have a look at this hilled spot. Early harbour might be worth it if the location is secure. A bit of rest would do the lads good.” [Experience]

"According to the Manor map there’s a Kingbreaker ruin an hour in that direction. A little out of our way, but it could be worth it.” A short rest-break is called, you motion Trooper Saint to hand you the map you swiped from the Manor study. You tap the circled point inscribed ‘Saint Judas Abbey: Abandoned’. "Here. Ruined stone fences make for better shelter than a craggy hill. We’ll march on, taking this path slightly west. And SGT, tell our recon to stop being so fekking soft. They're out there sniff out an ambush, not scope out the best spot for a nap."

”Haha! Right you are, brother!”

...

”He said WHAT?" You can hear CPL 'White Bitch's indignant yelp from here. That will probably come back to bite, perhaps literally, in the sack at a later date.

"Ah Saint's damn it. Do we really have to go rummaging around a Kingbreaker ruin?” Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster whinged.

”Not afraid of no Skarling ghost are you, ‘Joker’?” Trooper Vendis Durvano teased.
”Besides. Ruins mean loot.”

”Ain’t no loot, dummy. Been abandoned for centuries, picked over clean.”

”Blast.”

A few hours later

The light was fading by the time your force reached the ruins. Saint Judas Abbey might have been an impressive structure once, but that was clearly long ago. Half a wall facing North is all the remains standing above chest height. The stone fences could be practically stepped over, but it’s a damn sight better than open ground. Probably better than the craggy hill too, despite the slightly diminished height advantage. The only thing you didn’t like about it was how close the treeline was to the overgrown ruin. You set some men to clearing what they can, and others to establishing a secure perimeter and double-watch.

There’s only so much you can do though, sooner or later you find yourself with some free time in the failing light.

>Write-in: Camp fires only against the north wall, and have troopers shield it with shields, stones, debris, etc. Not as stealthy as full light discipline, but better than open fires like this is some fekking girl scout camping trip. Light the fires and have the men eat quick, then set up like a company taking a much needed rest. Tents up, cloaks stuffed with sticks and hay as outer guards, ect. The actual company will be hidden among the ruins poised to encircle and strike into the center of the false camp. Atleast 1/2 half on full alert while the others rest. "Pelt" posted down wind of the easiest path to the false camp with instructions to howl at set intervals afterdark for all clear and bay if he catches sight or sent of an unfamiliar force closing. ”This isn’t some band of Isabella Sisters advertising our location and wares to all passersby. Have a fire, but put it against the wall. Shield it however you can, and if the men bitch about the smoke in their eyes tell them it’s that or nothing and no hot food to boot. Talk is fine if you keep it down. We’re not on vay-fekking-cation.”

”Wots vacation?” An anonymous Trooper whinges, just below your hearing. ”Like we’d know…”

”Just do as the LT says, dimwit.” CPL ‘White Bitch’ snarls, raising her fist as if she was about to backhand the whole platoon herself if she has to.

As the camp begins to take shape, some cut down trees serving as sharpened stakes on the more severely crumbling sections of the perimeter, you notice a small inlet on the North wall. It was probably a tower of some sort, judging from the rotted stairs, but it has long since sunken to be lower than the very well it was supposed to look out over.

Vines and moss cover the mural within, you brush them aside with a sweep of your gauntlet. It shows a man with a halo fleeing an obsidian castle or tower of some sorts, the next panel is the same man kneeling at the foot of an impressive looking man in a throne. Probably Skarling himself. The other panels are faded through, except the second last. It shows the obsidian tower in flames. The inscription below are almost just as hard to make out, you can derive

======== sins against man, beast and G==== They did not ==== One of their ====his name === Judas urged his companions not to take par= == === =ouls would be ======= forev== They did not lis=== in tears he ==== and begged the Breaker of K====s for aid. So grea=== === === fury ==== of ten and ==== none survived, ==== ===== ===== only Etraxis ======ed.

”Etraxis…” You murmur, you had heard the mage in Kresden call your employer that.

Something stirs in response. There is an energy here.

"Who resides here! Tell me your story!

”Who… who… why… why… A chill breeze sweeps past you, certainly unnatural given that no trees sway in the wind tonight. ”Must I… Must I… be punished more?”

”Easy, old ghost. I not here to punish anyone…. I just want to listen to your story. About your old pal Etraxis.” You’re surpised at how calm you are. You guess after dealing with possessed-children, daemons and Dragons regular old revenants lose some of their dread in comparison.

”I only…. I only… wanted to do what was right.” The spirit sounds piteous, full of regret. ”To make…. To make… them stop. Stop hurting others…. I did not know. He will never forgive me… Etraxis? …. Etraxis?... No that’s what they called him..….”

”A name, ghost, give me a name!” If you have the name… Part of you doesn’t even want that kind of knowledge. Dangerous knowledge, the kind that gets people more than just killed.

”He will… he will…He will never forgive me…” The voice dies down to less than a whisper, you have to crane your neck to hear anything. ”My… my… brother… brother… Anton… Aton…”

”Anton? Just Anton? Antonius? Antony? Antonias? Father damn it, spirit, answer me!”
But the spirit is gone. Dissipated perhaps, like fabric that falls apart after being left alone for ages.

”Fek!”

You turn around only to nearly bowl over Trooper Kid, who is meekly holding a cloth and vial of oil, not sure what to make of their boss raising his voice at the masonry. They give you a basic signal, indicating your chestplate.

”Weapon. Clean. Armour. Oil clean now?”

You look down, the blood spatters from your Skald duels having well and truly dried. No matter how magical the weapon or armour, you have to maintain it or it will turn into so much scrap metal.

Good point. People in secret societies and cults often refer to each other as "brothers".

Still, there is obviously a connection between this Saint Judas and our employer. Perhaps we should ask Trooper Saint about this Saint Judas, after we talk to the heir. Maybe she'll start geeking out about her religion and forget to stab us entirely.

I think this is a general vote to leave the armour on, but talk to the boy-heir anyway?

>Small chance of Rust upon return (Temporary degrade, can be repaired with Gelt unless severe)

After Dark
Out of the corner of your eye you see Trooper Saint avidly watching Trooper Nissar Belhamun deal out another hand of Wendelt Fives. SGT ‘Bad Hand’ catches your eye and gives you a nod. CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus. Trooper ‘Pelt’ and Mask are all conveniently locate at different chokepoints in the ruins. Trooper Kid is struggling to sew a Skald patch onto your banner’s victory tags in the dim firelight. You sit in the shadows, barely visible in your Blackthorn Armour. You know you should be cold, but you don’t really feel it.

Opposite you the tied up heir-apparent sways slightly back and forth. There’s not much in the way of interesting conversation in your part of the camp. The boy-heir has clearly seen better days, drugged out of his mind and looking a far better suit for their pauper’s costume than they did when he first ran into you.

”Bluh…” The heir to the Neumunster throne stares at you with unfocused eyes. None of this is his fault really. Until a couple of months ago the grandson of second youngest brother of the Emperor would never have been considered the next in line (or something like that, CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus tried to explain it to you once). The loss of almost all the immediate Imperial line in Sarsburg has really shaken things up.

Really, this is just a young kid out of his depth. Off gallivanting with adventurers instead of being groomed for the throne. And now… odds are he’ll die because of it. Kidnapping him, killing his friends, drugging him to the point that he doesn’t know up from down. A small, insignificant part of you feels bad even without Saint scolding you. Or maybe it’s because you’re getting used to Saint’s scoldings. Either way it’s certainly not a large enough part to make you do anything about it.

Any sympathy you have for the boy rapidly disappears after he becomes sick on your boots.

”The pretty lights…” The kid slurs, rolling over halfway through his own sick.
’Pretty…”

”Uh, damnit. ‘Kid’ can you help him up? See if you can-“ You pause, noticing the boy-heir holding out a white pebble in his vomit-stained palm, still bound by rope. ”What the heck is that? Kid take it off of him!”

”Pretty lights…”

Temuel von Brachen, last surviving member of the von Brachen branch and heir-apparent to the Neumunster Imperial throne, squeezes his eyes shut tightly. The orb in his hand pulses once and your entire world erupts into LIGHT.

Your head is a jumble of distorted sounds and dancing lights. Like fairies, except blinding instead of pretty and painfully loud and dulled all at once.

”=====der attack! ===== cover!”

An arrow flits into the dirt in front of you, another flicking off the cobblestone wall. You can hear the impacts on the stones. Your men stumble around, some already ducking in cover but a dazed view unaware of the danger. Trooper Harper yelps as he kicks over the fire, the orange dots joining the white ones in your head.

You thought you saw… something run past into the woods, not from the South where the arrows are coming from. The West. Not something… Someone. They were carrying a bundle… The princeling! He’s gone!

You grit your teeth against the splitting headache. You can’t let them get away. The hostage, the traitor… whoever it is. They will answer to you, in blood.

”Stay low, men! Bad Hand, you’re in command!” You shout into the din as you follow after the figure. At least… that what you think you say. It’s all so confusing. You stumble after the figure at first, but slowly gain your footing and break into a job. Even in your disoriented state they aren’t hard to track from the broken branches and disturbed earth, they were also wearing armour like yourself.

Behind you the ruins of the Saint Judas Abbey are illuminated with the light of a dozen flaming arrows. The flaming ones are easy to spot, and avoid. But they’re only there to draw eyes away from the near invisible bolts of steel.

You’re fit, or at least you like to think so. Even in full-plate you should have been able to catch up to this person hefting a burden quickly enough. But in your dazed and staggered state it takes a long time to gain on them, the fire from the flames surrounding the ruins barely visible through the trees. The light drizzling rain does nothing to put them out.

You pause for a moment, panting. Your sense of direction of is all fekked up but you can tell that the tracks stop here in this ditch…

”Tar-HURK”

A searing pain in your armpit, sudden warmth of blood flowing down your side. The gap where you cauldron meets your chest… You shove your assailant back, but she’s already stepped out of your way.

‘White Bitch’ Tara always did know exactly where to hit men at their weakest.

You slip on some dead leaves, slumping against a fallen tree for support. This isn’t just the disorientating flash… this is something else, a cloying feeling in your veins. Poison?

”Gods fekking damn it, Prince.” The traitor hisses. ”It didn’t have to go down like this. You could have stayed back there, sat through a few fekking arrows and left it at that! Shit!"

She stands there looking down at you, her shock of white hair illuminated in the dim moonlight. She’s angry, which you’ve seen plenty of, but also upset. A rarer expression.

”Fek-Fek-Fek! Shitting Gods and shitting luck of a second-rate whore, I just knew it would
somehow come to this. Ever since I saw you tear apart those Skalds, I knew you weren’t going to overlook this one. That’d I’d have to do this sooner or later, now or years from now on the run.”
There’s regret in her eyes as she steps over you with a bloody dagger held in a sure grip. Doesn’t look like nearly enough regret there to make her hesitate though. You always liked that about her, that she didn’t hesitate to do a thing. ”I’m sorry, Prince. But you know as well as I do that if I don’t end this now you’ll hunt me down to the ends of the fekking earth. I’m sorry, I really am. You were my kind of bad-to-the-fekking-bones boss and a fantastic roll in the hay to boot. Going to miss your dick as much as you if I’m being perfectly fekking honest here."

”Tara…Why?”

You never made the mistake of assuming the sex meant something more than what it was. But it's hard to be that close with someone and not get a little familiar. You just want to know what drove her to betray her brothers and sisters like this.

”Why? You fekking idiot, the Gelt, that’s why!” CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara snarls. ”You think you could wave a whelp literally worth his weight in gold in front of folk who are paid to fight for a fraction of that a year? That no one would think to cash in on that ticket out of this kind of life?”

She leans in, dagger angled towards your throat. You can feel her hot breath against your face through your visor… so much less erotic than the times before.

”Don’t ‘Tara’ me, Prince. We’re not the fekking same. I’ve done some bad shit, and this is damn near at the bottom of it, but only because I had to. You –enjoy- this shit, damn it. You –live- for it. Not all of us want this, to fight and cry and die in the fekking mud. Me? I wanna retire to a nice villa by the sea and drink and fek and laugh. I want out, Prince, you hear me? I want out!

”That can be arranged.”

Crippling her is a good way to start a battle, we can FLRE afterwards
>>
>>1351642
Quick question, QM. How will the poison affect Prince after battle, assuming that we don't cleanse it with MBFH II? Can we make it back to camp safely? Or we'll just stumble for a few minutes and then die?

mbfh 2 then fight it out

>>
>>1351658
Remember that she has her head very close to ours. We're poisoned, tired, disoriented, and firing from an awkward sitting position. And reloading the gun will take turns. Aiming for her head might not be a smart idea.

Prince is probably aiming for leg because he can't possibly miss from that angle.
>>
>>1351663

>You have subtly angled the Ajiyimad Pistol at her leg, it’s not a kill-shot but it will damn well make an impression. [Elite]
We need to capture her alive to find out the heir's location

Once we find that out, she will face a court martial in front of the entire platoon. We are not a monster, we are an officer - let's fekking act like it.
>>
>>1351665
Hopefully she will have a severe and permanent combat penalty from having a fractured femur. That's better than an one-time bonus.

>>
After capturing her, we could have a cultist write runes in the inside of her stomach or her guts, and later send her into enemy territory in a suicide mission (recover the Tear, maybe)

If she ever tries to take an action which doesn´t further in any way her mission she explodes in a rain of gore and blood.

”Well…” CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara tugs at the dagger but it’s stuck, squelching slightly as. She leans back, looking at the freshly made corpse. ”I guess that’s that”

Prince’s corpse is still shaking a little. Last nerve tremors it looks like. She stands up, wiping her bloody hand on her pants. She steps over the corpse, another one-time friend back in the cold mud. Not even the first she’d put there herself.

”Right, we should get going, squirt. I mean- your Lordship…sire? Anyway…” She nods at the trussed up bundle sotwed under a hollow trunk. Their usually unfocused eyes are staring behind her with a terrified intensity. ”What are you…”

CPL ‘White Bitch’ stiffens, eyes wide and nostrils flaring. There’s a sinister rustle of leaves as the man she just killed slowly rises to his feet behind her.

Not sure how the ruling works out, but we've earlier discussed the health regen, and I think it only works when we're fighting. If we kill her in one round (+1 hp) and MBFH2 to remove the poison we're at -5. Sucking her dry puts us at 0HP. I think that still counts as dead?

I guess we should've played around with her for one round before killing her so we get to +1 HP.

MFBH could only counter the poison if used exclusively for that, not the DC bonus. So either way Prince would have been in the red.

>>
>>1351842
We'll, most anons were looking at the wrong traitor after all. It'd be fair to assume that if we had successfully found that WB was the traitor, this situation wouldn't have arisen.
>>
>>1351846
That would be relevant if we got attacked in a crowded melee but we were literally alone in the woods with a person we know is the traitor. The specific identity is irrelevant at that point. It can't be a "we were shocked it's her" thing either since she was already on our shortlist.
>>
>>1351843

The "it is too late now" will only get us deeper into shit.

It is never too late. Prince choose the responsability of the Officer over the promises of power that the Dark Father offered and has shown repetitive times that he doesn´t want to be feared by his men.

We have time. We just have to realize that MBFH is not the lazy, np, OP, switchblade ability that will save us from whatever stupidity we come up with.

What I meant to say is that there WILL be consequences. It´s just that there will be more consequences if we mindlessly choose to continue with "Dark Father hubando" route

>>

>>1351861

There are going to be consequences no matter what you do. Not using MBFH might lead to a failure at the worst time possible, for example.

MBFH is a tool. A dangerous one, sure, but a still s tool to be employed when appropriate (no, getting laid doesn't count as appropriate).
>>
>>1351865
>And as I've seen we're balls deep in dark now

Then why won´t we try to just stay clear of it. Going deeper isn´t gonna get us any good, and we may get out later.

>>1351871
There will be consequences, but I don´t think death is worse than Dark Father plaything. It is a useful tool, but the prize will only get steeper and steeper form here. I´d better let Prince be still human, thanks.
>>
>>1351875
Chill man, the dark father is the only good guy in the whole setting worth a damn. I'm sure we can cram a demon into a human host and then steal its mind if we want to be human again, no big deal!
>>
>>1351878
Your posts confuse me
>>
>>1351875

Well, you seem to assume that Dark Father = Literally Worse than Hitler. Consequences will not be pleasant, but they might not be as drastic as you think.

Besides, death is so final. Life is full of possibilities instead.
>>
>>1351882
Yeah I may be being a bit pessimistic, I just don´t like to put an open entrance to our soul for a being that makes us enter a murderous rage.

Anyway, gotta go. Good luck with your rolls, anons
>>
>>1351882
yeah the dark father seems like the god of revenge over the god of doing bad stuff for bad stuff sake if anything he will make us get his vengeance on earth so we are probably going to have to ransack some opposing gods temple
>>
>>1351875
Stabbed. In. The. Face.

Also if you wanted "Light and Happiness Quest Without Consequences" then you can play one of the many DB Quests.

This is good, this failure. It'll make the players play better. I thought we would have done so after losing Auntie, but Forgotten finally realized that to make the players care, you have to kill their Waifu AND their arrogance.

Maybe next time we'll remember that we were baiting a trap bringing the Royal along. Maybe we'll remember to trust nobody when searching for a spy. That this is Black Company Quest and an Officer's cruelty in pushing for discipline is to save lives. Probably not.

I'd say I hope you soft cunts learn these lessons in Syria fighting the Rus but honestly nobody deserves that.

Anyways forgotten has played rolls straight all along, start thinking of how to avoid situations where a 100 can kill us instead of wanking about.

>CPL 'White Bitch' Tara has been struck down! [-10/15 HP]

-----------------------------------------------

You’ve never been so incomprehensibly full of rage. Incoherent. Livid. She fekking stabbed you in the face!!

”That impossible, you can’t be… Gods that must hurt.” CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara winces at the sight of you.

”Ttthhhh.” You try to say something. An agreement, or maybe a threat? It comes out in a stream of spewing blood. You don’t know how extensive the damage is, Dark Father knows you don’t –want- to know. You know it has to be bad, real bad, but you try not to think about it as you heft your Zweihander over your shoulder. All you know is that you’re not done here. Not yet.

”Look, let’s just-“

”Hrrrrr.”

It’s not so much a warcry as an animalistic growl with which you lead forward. The first swing cuts clean through an overhead branch above you, barely giving ‘White Bitch’ enough time to dive to the side. With inhuman strength your second swing cuts halfway through an ancient gnarled oak, the blade becoming stuck in the middle. You’re exposed as you give it a futile tug, but you release the hilt just as ‘White Bitch’ stabs at a gap in your shoulder blades.
A backhanded strike of your fist pummels the wind out of her, the follow up punch slams her into the ditch she ambushed you in. She scrambles to get up in time, but you move like lighting. Too fast by far for any mortal man in all that armour.

”Oh Gods…” You lift her up effortlessly, like a ragdoll. ”No please, wai-“

”Hrrrrrrrr.” A little late for negotiating, don’t you think?

You send her flying into another oak, the snap definitely not coming from a broken branch given her sudden wail of pain. Looks like she broke a lot more than just her wrist in that one. Using one arm to drag herself away from you, the traitor makes it all of about three feet before you’re standing over her. She reaches for a hidden dagger but you grab her wrist and pluck it out of her hands effortlessly, then you snap her wrist like a twig for good measure.

”No, please! I haven-” ‘White Bitch’ Tara gasps suddenly as your gauntlets tighten around her throat, cutting off the air. ”You… can’t… I “

”Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.” Can’t? Can’t what? End your treacherous life? Watch me.

”Haven’t…. bled…. Since… that…carrying…your seed.”

Your grip slackens a fraction. What did she just say?

[1/2]

”*cough cough* "I swear… my blood *cough* my blood hasn’t come since our first time, after your fight with Snake. You can’t kill me, I’m pregnant with your child.” Her eyes are watery, pleading with you. Begging. She knows you could snap her neck right now. ”Please, Prince. Just… let me go. Keep the princeling, just let me go.”

You want to snarl at her, call her a liar. You barely remember that night. But something inside you knows. Somehow, something… not quite you. She’s not lying, at least not about this.

As your rage begins to subside you feel yourself weaken, physically and mentally. Set upon ending her life at all costs moments ago, now you hesitate. You could finish her… you could do it right now. Your vision is fading… even if you tied her up, she might escape before the others arrive. Or worse, explain herself away over your cooling corpse. And even if she faced the Captain’s Court… the verdict would still be death. Kiranova won’t give a damn about pregnancy. Below, do you really care about it either?

Does whatever is growing in her really give her the right to live on as your probably bleed out on the forest floor here? Death or not, you’ll almost certainly never see this supposed child of yours even if it is carried to term.

Everything is fading… soon you won’t have the strength either way. You can’t hold on much longer… You’re so tired…

Did you not read the part where the QM said Prince felt she wasn't lying? Do you understand the concept of playing a role, like in roleplay?

Stop meta-gaming OOC.
>>
>>1351899
>>” …” There are greater powers at work here. A grand design. You will not interfere. [Let her go][Courage]

Mostly because this seems interestingly mysterious. Like QM said, voting based on gut feeling, not mechanics.
>>

Personally I'd rather kill her if we can't capture her, but thank you for taking the vote seriously.

Mate I cast a vote with no write in, all I'm doing is call you an idiot because you're the only one here trying to go against the grain. Look at the votes and read the quest, Prince cares about the company, about his squad and his battle brothers. The company comes first and that is reflected in the majority vote for this choice too.

I don´t think you would think about "Mother´s Strenght" or anything like that if your alleged mother is laying on the ground with your sword at her throat. Kebabs don´t try to make a last attack, I believe.

Should we let her go? Well, if you make an absolute necessity of making In-Character choice, would any of the anons like a baby influenced by the very being who makes us (Prince) a bloodthirsty psycopath?

>>1352065

"You only take the vote seriously if you agree with me, otherwise you are a metagaming piece of crap"
>>

I honestly think killing her is something Prince would do.
He slaughtered Snake having far less reasons to do so. I don't see how this would be such a huge change for him. And after Snake's death, Bad Hand did "wake him up" on the concept of family in the Company.
I don't think Prince would want a child anyway.
And remember: all this is happening after we were poisoned and stabbed through the head.
Going by simple gut feeling, Prince should be furious and filled with hatred for the liar, backstabber, cheater and murderer that is currently begging for her life in front of him.
In character, death seems the right choice to me.

>>
I voted assuming Prince would die. I'm not doing it out of sentimentality, I'm doing it because aside from Prince's whole belief in the Dark Father system, our son growing up, discovering who we were, and maybe either reforming/releading the Black Company or finishing off 'dear' Mother for us is more narratively satisfying, and possibly what that choice is implying.
>>
I would have maybe spared her (not very sure) but the "baby" revelation is fucked up. Foulspawn no thanks, although i don´t know if this might be the correct choice, as Prince will likely die, He or She is his child afterall and thsi si not a rational fucking choice

Screw it, i change my vote to >Pregnant. Wow. Maybe some small part of you will live on somewhere. Or some other sentimental shit. [Let her go] [Clever]

BUT iI would like to point out something. QM, if you are listening, pls try to not select that kind of images in this difficult choices. I know it is your quest and all, but it:

1-Confirms that the baby is basically Dark Father´s (which would be questioned and would make the choice more difficult and interesting)

2-It looks like the poster of a B-Rated comedy/gore movie and really doesn´t convey the emotional impact of killing a child.(I would bet that with a different image the vote might have been more interesting and challenging)
>>
>>1352104

i fill like people forget what the dark father stand for and that
hell i dont really remember myself

so kinda the dark father is the good guy in a way

He's Prometheus, if Prometheus went insane from his tourture.
The only aspect of his that's khorne-like is killing in the beleif that living is torment and constant pain/heartache/agony, and that killing a person so they can embrace peace with the dark father is a mercy.
Roughly I'd call him chaotic good/ chaotic neutral. It's more about raging against the Injustice of the world, and either accepting peace in death, or living on to spite said Injustice and horror.
Our discussion with page at the very first thread has all the lore you need about the dark father

I would really like to have a serious conversation about the Dark Father.

My main points of unease with his figure are the following, correct me if I´m wrong or misinterpreting him.

1-When Prince gets possesed, he becomes something so ruthless than even his own men and long time friends (Badhand) fear. Is bloody rage an aspect of what you could say is a chaotic neutral/good god? (pls dont start an alig discussion) Do we really really want to further the goals of something like that? Of course you could argue that his has his good parts ( like the 40 k equivalent of Hope as an aspect of Tzeench or Honor for Khorne) but he is so "insane", as you mentioned, and full of rage over his imprisionment that all the good qualities would be overshadowed by his neverending wrath and thirst of revenge. Do we really want to further the goals of something like that?

2- About this I am not sure. Aren´t cultist giving him human sacrifices? Or do cultists only pray to the Bellow that contains the Dark Father? If the former is true, even while taking into account differences in the forms of adoration, Prince strikes me as a guy which at least is trying to be fair and care for his men and is not really a cruel person. My problem is, how can such a person pray to a good that demands human sacrifices, usually in gory ways, like the fighting ring of the threads from the beginning?
>>
>>1352295
Bruh.
Let me make this kinda clear.
1.Im voting to kill her.
2.we further his goals just by living, there's really not much we can do.
3.I don't really care about the morality , and don't want this discussion, because it will devolve into the subjective.

Though I will say this:
He's the only reason we're(sorta) alive right now, without MBFH we would have died plenty of times.

>>1352495
Men can change their minds. You'll notice I didn't argue those who had good reasons for Prince's actions, only fools who babbled.

Indeed my first vote was to Cripple for later capture, or to kill her if not possible. But the more I thought about how MBFH has influenced us in the quest, the more I came to think we should spare her for now.

After all, we can always chase after her.

Then again, from the voters who got us into this mess by being lazy about setting camp and guarding our prisoner, I guess I shouldn't expect much. At least some consistency in trying to roleplay instead of shutting the barn door after the horses have escaped by suddenly trying to munchkin and outright ignoring the QM writing things like "Prince believs that she's telling the truth".

It's sad when people start playing against each other to try and win"their" vote.

>>”…” No one leaves the Company. No exceptions. Brothers may have died tonight because of her. [Finish her] [Elite]
She wants another life, that's okay. She tries to get money for that by stealing our hostage, that's understandable. Organizing an attack on the company without caring about killing her comrades is not okay. There's the death penalty for that.
She stabs Prince with only a little bit of regret, even though he is (perhaps not, but she doesn't know that) the father of her child. But as soon as she is losing she tries to hide behind that child? I don't see why that should work.
So kill her like the traitor that she is.
>>

Prince might worship the Dark Father, but he was never a zealot, and his loyalty to the Black Company has always been much more defining IMO. Traitors die, no hard feelings.

Alright, calling it. I'm already late for work as it is, so no update for a couple of hours. Whew lads, I figured this was going interesting after I went to bed. Let's all take a step back.

>>1352247
This is fairly accurate. The Father stuck up for the world, then got slapped down so hard and for so long that he stopped caring about the very thing he fought for. It's up for debate whether he is completely homicidal against all life or merely so full of rage he doesn't care.

He was not the only God to speak against the world's destruction, but he was the only one to actually fight for it. The Mother stepped in after his downfall and promised to look after the things he had given up everything for. Chevalisse outright banned his worship as heretical. Neumunster are a little 'meh', but view it distastefully.

>>1352295
They don't worship the Dark Father. It's largely a movement that Syka has instigated to perpetuate fear deify the Necromancer. Getting bonuses from all that human sacrifice and blood rituals is just a bonus.

To be extremely cold and pragmatic, does the Company have any use for Dark Father spawn? Because even if they do the trouble with raising a terrifying half-demon is you'll get a lot of dead bodies and or demons by the end.

Still writing up the main post.

In the mean time I need two rolls on the casualty table earlier from the Neumunster Commando ambush.

(1)
Casualty Roll: 2 rolls of 1d23 on the casualty table. Rolls of 4 (white bitch) will be ignored.

(2)
Severity Roll: Roll a 1d6 linking to your casualty roll (or stating their name) to see the severity. We will deduct -1 from the result due to Trooper Kid's apprentice medic status. Bleed Out and Maimed will be resolved at a later date if necessary. For the purpose of this roll you still get Doc's -10% chance to those rolls.

Casualty Severity Roll: 1d6
1 = Just a Scratch
2 = Walking Wounded
3 = Grievous Injury (25% bleed out, 25% Maimed)
4 = Mortal Blow (40% bleed out, 40% Maimed)
5 = Death
6 = Gruesome Death (-1d6 Battle DC)

Other stuff
>If the casualty is Mask he automatically rolls a 1 and keks ensue.
> If the casualty is a senior NCO (CPL 'Jack' Marcus, CPL Hirstun of Ligh, SGT Bad Hand and Trooper Saint only), you may re-roll the severity result due to 'Grenn Pelts' factor. The second roll is always accepted. ONLY the person that made the initial roll can do this IF they wish, though they can ask others if they think a re-roll is a good idea.

Saint doesn't need to know we're killing Tara. Honestly we outright stated the possibility of mass murdering everybody in Kresden, and I don't remember correctly but I think she also knows we abandoned the orphans to get eaten by demons.

>>1354532
Well we're going to be a little bit more dead inside after.

Remember how we killed Snake? Our actions and the motives we choose for Prince affect the lens through which the QM writes him.

That's what's going to ruin the Saint ending.

Also the Kiranova. We are making good progress on the Bad Hand route though!
>>

>>
>>1354590

In general I think the waifu obsessions have lead to a lot of dumb decisions. Saint gets away with too much shit, White Bitch is the reason we fucked up using Muh Blud in a completely idiotic situation, and we've gone full retard with Kiranova a few times in the past. It's not all bad, it leads to humor, but we need to wake the fuck up sometimes and get professional.
>>
>>1354654
LT shank
>>
I wouldn't say we've let Saint get away with all that much more than we let Bad Hand get away with. But trying to waifu White Bitch has certainly landed us in some steaming shite.

>>
>>1354657
We've certainly done some stupid stuff chasing these women, but we've been pretty good at not going overboard.

Saint is practically our morality pet. Her approval makes Prince think he's not a complete bastard. Kiranova is the old flame. She's over Prince, but Prince isn't really over her. Bitch is probably our best scenario when it comes to female companionship. It wasn't because we were sleeping with her that we wrote her off, it was because there were much more likely culprits.

>>1354697

I agree, other than using MB to have possessed god sex we've done a decent balancing act, especially with Saint. I'm not saying we should have figured out she was the mole or anything, I'm just looking at the smaller things we've done. This was a great example of how relationships while in a militant role will utterly fuck you no matter how careful you are. I can easily see how we'd undermine ourselves in a similar situation with the other two.
>>
Guys what if the Dark Father purposely possessed us that day so he can fuck the one who will inevitably fuck us over and its his way of telling us not to trust anyone?

- LT Prince

-- SGT Bad Hand

--- Knight-Taskmaster Cairsun
--- Knight-of-the-Line Mask

--- CPL Jack (1st squad)
---- Trooper Saint (aide de camp)
---- Trooper Kid (ensign, medic)
---- Trooper Nissar
---- Trooper Joker
---- Trooper Vendis
---- Trooper Smiles

--- CPL Hirstun (2nd squad)
---- Trooper Godric
---- Trooper Crackfoot
---- Trooper Arlen
---- Trooper Twice-in-one-day
---- Trooper Lerrek
---- Trooper Utred
---- Trooper Hans

--- LCPL Murder (I foresee a promotion in her near future) (3rd squad)
---- Trooper Olly
---- Trooper Oliver
---- Trooper Harper
---- Trooper Lokrey

Third squad is starting to look a bit battered.

”…”

”Prince? I promise I’ll-“

”Hssshht.” Shut up.

No one leaves the Company. No exceptions. Brothers may have died tonight because of her. Fek anything else, Dark Father’s included, this Bitch stabbed her brothers in the back and then stabbed you in the fekking face.

”You fekking *wheeze* CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara hisses through clenched teeth as your grip tightens, legs kicking up dead leaves as while her broken arm remains limp and useless at her side”shitting…*wheeze*…cunt!” Her other arm, hand dangling at the broken wrist, bats feebly at your shoulder. Weaker with every passing second. ”fek… *wheeze* …you… Pri…pr…”

Another pat on your shoulder. And again. Weaker and weaker. Her eyes go an ugly bloodshot colour, silent open and shutting of her mouth, no more air. Her broken wrist patting your shoulder eventually stops altogether, a dead arm sliding down your side. Your grip doesn’t lessen in the slightest for a long while longer. Not slackening one bit, not until you’re sure she is gone.

His Blood For Mine: +3HP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKAM_Hk4eZ0

You’ve lost a lot of blood… too much. You’re veteran of enough battles to know this is bad. Maybe a whole lot more than bad. Is this it? Is this what your miserable shit of a life culminates in? Dying in the dark, in the rain… with a dagger in your face, standing over the corpse of someone you had considered a companion. Not even standing, kneeling. If that.

The dagger is still in there, the steel shockingly cold. You could run your tongue against it if you wanted. But your tongue is all swollen and bloody, you can barely breath let alone speak. Traces of the poison remain, you try to lift your hand to tentatively touch the dagger… to feel how bad it really is. Your arm won’t move. You sigh and try again, but all that happens is that you spit more blood and slump over on your side. What a way to go, splayed ungracefully over the corpse of the one who has likely killed you.

Out of the corner of your eye, the one on your good side, you can see the leafless trees swaying in the breeze. No stars in the night sky, just clouds. You blink against the rain drizzling into your eye. So annoying. But it’s to focus on that that the dull throbbing in your cheek. It’s getting easier not to focus on anything at all. They’re not droplets of rain after all, just the first snowflakes of winter…

Voices…

”Where the bleedin’ hell did they- oh shit! Sergeant, he’s over here!”

”Out of my way!” The sound of heavy footsteps… a hand on your shoulder, rough and callused. Your blurry vision can’t make out the details of the face, someone is holding a torch behind them. They’re trying to lift you up, but they stop suddenly. ”Oh no… Medic! Kid! Damnit, brother, no!”

”What about the boy over here, sarge?” The other voice says, your ear ringing on each word. It all hurts.

”What a-fekking-bout him? I’m busy here, Trooper!” The voice snarls “Kid! Kid you slow-fekking-twink get over here now!”
Small steps, the rustle of leaves. Soft fingers against your neck. You can’t tell who it is, everything is so dark. You feel another twinge of pain as cloth is pressed against your face, going wet and slick nearly as soon as it’s put down and replaced.

”…” Another bundle of clothe is pressed there. You’re tired. Why can’t they just leave you alone?

”Shit! It’s not working, Kid try something else! …I don’t know, anything!” The gruff voice reminds you of your old pal ‘Bad Hand’, but the SGT was never one to panic in the face of anything. ” Gods we’re losing him… Saint? Can’t you use your… whatever it is on him?”

It’s dark now… you can only hear their voices. But it sounds like they are so very far away…

”I… I can try.” Comes another voice, a woman’s. Soft hands rest upon your cheek, stroking it gently, another on your chest. Mother of Mercy, Hear My Prayer. Grant this lowly servant a fraction of your beneficience so that this one might… no… nothing.

”Nothing? Nothing what?!”

”It… it’s not working.”

”No, stop! I’m no healer, Saint, but I know –not- to pull it out!” The male voice growls ”He’ll bleed out in-“

”Sergeant! Shut up and listen to me! Prince is going to die right here and now! You need to trust me when I say this is his only chance.”

The wound in your face makes a horrifically audible sucking sound when Trooper Kid . A flash of white-hot pain again. You’re almost getting used to it.

”Okay. Now, cut another line under his cheek, just below the wound… Now, quickly!”

The cloth is pressed back to your cheek again, but the blood is flowing out even quicker now. You barely even register the slash of pain this time. It’s all so distant…

”Move over… Here goes.” The woman’s voice says, the small fingers and clothe replaced by another hand, fingers probing you dual wounds. Seven-hundred Saints I hope this works.”

You are all of the sudden in pure agony when the fingers suddenly push deep into the wound to pinch together on the inside of your face.

Darkness Takes You.

Dissapointed not only in how hamfisted this last part was shit slapped together. Though you could arguee there was a couple good hints. What really burns my biscuits is how the roll was accepted only out of spite of us finally having a streak of luck after years of mostly dick. If anyone is the traitor, i would say it us the qm for such a bum burningly bad call on a roll(which lets be honest) that wouldnt of counted in any of the past threads. Look through them, this is purely unique(though the rules have been bent they have not been ignored when it comes to quotes n roll orders. Amazing story and quest so far, but poor sportsmanship in this last bit...also how in the living feck did a dagger pierce our face plate. Would love to see our armor again. Was pretty sure nothong was slipping through our visor save a bolt/fekking elf arrow.

True about the helmet tho. Silly girl should have shanked us in the neck.
>>
>>1360159
Eh.
You could argue that Prince didn't sleep with the helmet on and that simply didn't bother to put it on amidst the chaos ensuing.
Either way I'd rather get stabbed in the face than in the neck. Less squishies.
>>
>>1360159
Pretty sure our armor has a gorget.

Anyways we should have rolled for Saints magic. "It doesn't work when I want it to" is actually the exact opposite.

We should have her talk to our company magicians - and jherek or whatever cultist bro's name is - about fixing that.
>>
Rolled 71 (1d100)

I wonder if we're getting a thread this week.
>>
>fail the chase roll
>get put into a save or die situation

Not even a "you get fucked up, fight". We get a "you get really fucked up, now don't get stabbed in the face". And then despite harping on about how he isn't afraid of simply killing Prince if the dice fuck him, Forgotten doesn't simply kill Prince. This whole situation is simply stacked drama.
>>
>>1360523
>Not even a "you get fucked up, fight". We get a "you get really fucked up, now don't get stabbed in the face".
Except all the choices were the initiation of a fight. It's just that nobody except a crit fail at that moment, which is what led to the face stab.
>>
>>1360590
>nobody except a crit fail
*nobody expected a crit fail
>>
>>1360590
>it was a fight
>Prince slips on some leaves and she just straddles him with no resistance and puts a knife up to his throat

Yeah that's a fight. The crit fail was with the pistol. But in that situation it was gong to be regardless of the option picked "hit her or get stabbed in the face". If failing the chase roll meant we get stabbed, then we fall over, bleeding out, and she just waddles over and does whatever the fuck she wants with no resistance from Price then why the hell would failing any "combat" roll lead to anything other than being stabbed to death?

It's bullshit drama and Prince should be dead right now. You can't have me believe that in the 3 combat rounds we had left to live our forces managed to ward off the distraction attack in which they were all huddled trying not to get shot and in no way going out to deal with shit AND find Prince in the middle of the fucking woods to POSSIBLY save his life. He's dead.
>>
>>1360608
>But in that situation it was gong to be regardless of the option picked "hit her or get stabbed in the face".

DC was 54. We had a 54% chance of not screwing it up, and it was the calculated damage of the crit fail that put us at negative HP. If the worst roll had only been 55 while still failing all three rolls, then she would have inflicted zero damage. Probably would have been written as the gun going off but the aim being wrong, startling her enough for Prince to throw her off.
>>
>>1360656
From the way he was writing Prince as an incompetent fuck I doubt he would have gotten her off. Even though I did forget how the dice worked, I concede there.

Prince is still fucking dead though.
>>
>>1360664
I think part of allowing the backstab to happen was because we, as players, never expected it from her. We'd been playing the "who's the traitor" game for multiple sessions, and final vote came to suspecting Saint as the traitor. Only 2, maybe 3 guys I think suspected White Bitch with actual reasoning, and a lot of it was a hunch that Saint fit too neatly. White Bitch has really been beneath our notice all is time except as a fuckbuddy.

Plus, going by her abilities, she has bonuses at getting the drop on people. And in that situation, she really did have the drop on Prince.
>>
>>1360700
He tripped on some leaves. Fucking leaves. Dried leaves his boots should have crushed through to get traction on the dirt. You have to TRY to trip on leaves.

>A searing pain in your armpit, sudden warmth of blood flowing down your side. The gap where you cauldron meets your chest… You shove your assailant back, but she’s already stepped out of your way.
>‘White Bitch’ Tara always did know exactly where to hit men at their weakest.

So he was surprised by both the emotional backstab and the actual physical stabbing. Then the poison had a debilitating effect on him, causing disorientation.

Well let's look at that, the armpit isn't a "weak point" it's that it's less armored than say the chest or something. If Prince was wearing real combat gear he would be wearing more armor under his plate to protect the joints explicitly for that reason. Apparently Prince wears fucking nothing under there when he should be wearing chainmail and some cloth. Regular daggers do not pierce chainmail. You need a thrusting dagger for that. The poison also wouldn't be ideal for stabbing someone in the armpit because more blood would be leaving the body than going into it from there since she would have severed the artery leading to the arm. Basically Prince would be bleeding out, not poisoned. Also, he would be fucking dead because he would bleed out because they don't have any surgeons with them.

But let's disregard ALL of that. Poison isn't instant acting, it would take several seconds to work in. He instead tries to shove her and immediately backs away and slip. That doesn't take long enough for poison to get into the bloodstream AND start to fuck someone up. It's like how you don't get instantly drunk from drinking a shot or seven. It takes at least a little time for it to actually do anything.

Basically Prince is an incompetent fuck.

God damn man, calm down, so the artery got nicked instead of severed and it was a particularly fast acting poison aided by the fact that it was in the bloodstream so quickly. You can't make blanket statements about the poison without knowing what the poison is, especially in a universe with magic
>>
>>1360889
If it was magical super poison it wouldn't be a slow death it would be instant brain death. If she could get super fucking metal poison she wouldn't fuck around with poison that took a while to kill someone. So it's safe to say it's a mundane, if violent poison.

She drove a dagger up to the hilt into our armpit. She hit the artery. It's literally right fucking in line with the armpit. You don't nick it if you put an entire dagger in there. And even a nicked artery you'll still bleed out by the time they got around and tried to help. If it gets severed it takes only a couple of minutes to bleed to death so if it got nicked combined with the fact Prince got stabbed in the face he would bleed out by the time they hauled him back to actually patch him up. Since they would need the doctor, who they left behind to actually deal with sensitive surgery like that. There is no precedence for Kid being able to do it, or Saint.
>>
>>1360901

Alright, now factor in the fact that we're also magic, at least partially so
>>
>>1360906
Prince is only magic in specific circumstances. One of which is wearing off and will leave him in negative HP, IE. dead. He'll still be bleeding out, he'll still be poisoned (because they don't know he's poisoned) and he'll still have negative HP after this effect wears off. Prince is dead.
>>
>>1354121
And you missed Pelt aka Trooper Doggo, QM. Jeez.

>>1360927
Calm down. Negative HP just means you are incapacitated, unable to fight, barring Unbreakable kicking in. White Bitch did not die when we dropped her to -10/15 HP. We had to choke her out.

See what QM said:
>>1351778
"If you take damage that adds up to your negative equivalent of full health you are instantly dead. You're currently at [-6/25 HP]"

Prince is currently at -6 - 5 + 3 = -8/25 HP. Not enough to kill him outright. He's just very quickly bleeding out unless he gets medical attention.

I have no clue what Saint did to him though.
>>
>>1362333
Actually scratch that.
>>Black Hand of Father ACTIVATED! No HP Penalty for MBFH in ‘Unbreakable’ rounds! There are other costs though…

He's at -6 + 3 = -3/25 HP. I think he'll be... fine? Barring that weird thing Saint did to his face at the end.

>>1362341
We didn't use it during our unbreakable

Talking about 3 souls and the +3 hp. WB+2.

Holy shit. Totaly missed that.

It was a rule that wasn't established, but was applied to any roll that existed in that context. He has thrown out many roles over the years for less reasons, and this one deserved such.

I could be wrong, but a look at the archives would be proof enough. Outside of that the whole last segment was very poorly thrown in. I only say this because he has crafted such a wonderfully (atleast seemingly) well thought out story. Though we have fekked it a glorious ammount of times, he has taken it quite well in side. Along with him being quite fair(in the most part) with rolls. This just seems like shenanigans...

Though yes I have said I am salty, because our armor was stated to be on aka fully equipped. A dagger would never go through the face plate of that unholy machination. Not without some beastly(IE NOT white bitch) force applied. The first surprise attack actually made some sense, but I feel her getting the jump on us is only rational because of recently taking a magical flash bomb to the face.
>>
>>1363831
Also the previous poster was me just to not seem like a total tool.

Also to the guy bringing up prince is dead argument, everything you are saying would make any rational person (who has followed what he was wearing etc) think the dagger was total horse shit in both occasions. She basically stabbed plate/mail (with her goliath fucking strength. Managed to sever our not artery, give us godlike instant acting magic poison that doesn't kill fast at all. Along with stabbing us through a metal plate(again with her fucking goliath strength) with enough precision to either
A.not kill us kill us
B.Wound the most unimportant part of the face, but for some reason the trauma of being stabbed in the face basically 1 shot us.

Though being that "death" is -25/25 for us, by the rules we are not dead..maimed as hell ya, but not dead.

I feel I have to say this, but I love your quest qm and I love what you have done so far...this seems like the direct effect of you being very tired/out of it for this small portion. You tend to slip the most when you are very tired, and you should try to catch that more.

>A dagger would never go through the face plate of that unholy machination. Not without some beastly(IE NOT white bitch) force applied.
Considering she already had the dagger held to his face, I always thought she just jammed the blade through the visor/eye hole. Don't remember what the armor looked like though, could be wrong.

>He has thrown out many roles over the years for less reasons
Can I get a few examples please?
>>

>>1363585
That's not how it works. HBFM works by healing by 20% of the HP of the people you kill. White Bitch had 15 HP total. 20% of 15 HP is 3 HP, which is what Prince got when he killed her.

It it were 1 soul = 1 HP, it would be laughably underpowered.
>>
>>1364332
Depends on how big the visor eyehole is...so like i said unless it was large enough for a dagger to just slip in. Shes going to have to have some insane str check or something to get the job done. Though I could be wrong about the size of the holes
check the archives definitely more than 1 example in it.

Here's how our armor looks.
Going by the picture, White Bitch could have shoved the knife in our jaw or through an eye. I'm thinking the former.
