Your eyes slowly flutter open as you awaken, your memories just as fuzzy as your vision. You shake your head, trying to clear the clutter and are immediately met with the familiar rattle of an armored helmet that was encasing your head right now.

With a pained, and slightly annoyed grunt, oy manage to get yourself back to your feet, your armor clanking loudly. You look down and see that you're wearing...

When you show up in pic related and are actually a really nice guy working for good, and really accommodating to mages and their problems, much like the rest of your similarly clad brethren (although they don't know why you added horns to the armor, just kinda... gives the wrong impression. You immediately recognize the black armor of your knight order, with a bit of the original obsidian sheen it used to have when it was freshly made. Your battle instincts then kick in and your head swivel side to side, carefully examining your surroundings.

You were standing in the middle of a wooded area. Trees surrounded you on all sides, and fresh grass prodded at your feet. Thin rays of the blessed sun pierced their way through the leaf cover, illuminating the clearing you were in.

And there, embedded in the body of a freshly killed direwolf was your...

Cautiously make your way over the direwolf corpse, your head continuing to swivel from side to side to scan for a possible ambush. Thankfully, nothing leaps out to attack you as you approach the slain wolf, easily almost one and half times your height if it were standing on its hind legs. And this was just a pup.

One quick yank frees your halberd from the corpse, and inspect it carefully. Other than some bloodstains, the head still looked intact. That was a good sign.

Suddenly, your ears alert you to the rustle of leaves. Something large and quick dashing through the brush. You ready your halberd just as another direwolf leaps out from behind a tree, its teeth gnashing.

Thankfully...

Fortunately, you were known for being tough to knock down. You dig your heels into the dirt and let the wolf come. It lunges at you, mouth open wide for a killing bite aimed at your neck. Thankfully, you're wearing a suit of armor and the beast's teeth are no match for steel.

Even its sheer mass and weight wasn't enough to knock you off your feet as you stand resolutely, easily absorbing the impact. There's a bit of an awkward silence as the wolf, its mouth unable to find purchase on your armored collar, slides off and falls to the ground. It's a simple matter for you to bring your halberd stabbing down, ending its life with one well placed thrust.

Simple.

Now... what were you doing out here again? You couldn't quite remember...

VOW OF THE WITCH HUNTER: Abhor the witch! Black Templars generally have a mistrust and dislike of magic and those that would use it, seeing at as an affront to Sol, the Sun God. However, some take this to the next level, swearing to exterminate the use of magic. Through sheer faith and conviction, witch hunters gain an increased resistance to magic.

VOW OF THE CRUSADER: Sol wills it. Like the rising of the sun, the Black Templars spread Sol's cleansing flame across the land. The trauma and glory of past wars still rings in their hearts and minds, and they never forget or forgive those that would see humanity's extinction. Receives a combat bonus against demi-humans.

VOW OF THE CHAMPION: Salvation through adversity. While witches and demi-humans prowl the lands, one must not forget the numerous monsters and beasts that call the untamed wilderness their home. It is the duty of the Champions to seek these monsters out in their lairs and slay them to expand mankind's holdings.

"As the master at arms of this citadel, and your instructor, I will inform you of an important, though not often relished, topic. Certain youthful members of our glorious cause may seek to go beyond cordiality in relation to offenders of the creed. Or to put it simply "redeem" less egregious offenders through carnal means. If such a topic arises you may consult brother at arms kirk. Sadly he once shared the same views, and even with advanced healing techniques he lost 2 out of his 5 limbs to a terrible demi-human curse know as crotch rot. Only has one leg on a three leg stool if that wasn't clear enough. So there's that yeah."

...that's right. It's coming back to you now. You traveled to these far fledged lands to hunt down great beasts. Dragons, leviathans, lyacans, and more. This Frontier must be made safe for human settlers, with steel and fire.

You casually wipe the blood on your halberd off on the slain wolf's fur, and prepare to go on your way when you hear a voice.

"You're just going to leave these corpses here? That's a bit of a waste."

Bear in mind that the targets we've now chosen are not humans, and may require different tactics and weapons to defeat than standard armored men.

Conventional swords would probably still be a fair waste of steel against them, though.

wouldnt say that as plate armor and chainmail was very costly so only kights and higher ups would have a full set most of the time youl be fight leather people.
plate also had straps and open ares to cut in to.

Perhaps we should invest in a powerful crossbow with a windlass, or blackpowder arms?
>>
>>1350405
A shorter shaft has great application in dealing with human foes considering our armor, being in the woods (as opposed to a formation), and having to slog it around. But that's not taking into account we're fighting dire beasts... I kinda want our pole arm to have more than sufficient reach given such considerations. While I'm not suggesting we go for a pike a bit of extra length wouldn't be out of character from a pragmatic point.

You turn around and point to the two wolf corpses and shrug. If the mysterious stranger wanted them then that was fine with you.

And then you see a girl seemingly just meld out of the trees. At first, you think it's a damned elf, and the grip on your halberd tightens. However, a closer inspection showed that she wasn't abnormally tall and lithe, and it didn't appear she had the pronounced, pointed ears elves were so famously known for.

No, she was as human as could be, but that snow white hair of hers was rather unusual, too. A cold white that matched the fur of the slain wolves. Her ice blue eyes also seemed to stare straight into you, giving the sense that you were staring straight at an icy mountaintop.

The girl then withdraws her hood, showing more of her white hair as she strides confidently forward, despite her being at least a head shorter than you.

"You... don't talk a lot, don't you?" She narrows her eyes.

You just shrug again. You never really saw the need for words when carrying out your duties.

"Ah, the tall, quiet type, huh?" The girl nods as she casually leans down next to one of the wolf corpses and draws a skinning knife. "Don't see knights like you out in these parts too often. You new?"

You reluctantly nod.

"Figures." The hangs a freshly skinned wolf fur over a nearby branch as she starts on the second. "Name's Morgan, by the way. I'm, well, I guess you can say I'm a local."

A local? You point to the direction of the town you vaguely remembered passing through.

"Huh? No." Morgan chuckles and shakes her head. "Not really the city type, you know? What's your name, by the way?"

You only respond with silence, just staring at Morgan from behind your helmet.

"Ooooooookay..." Morgan frowns, not quite sure what to make of you. "I guess I can just call you Knight, then?"

You shrug. If that's what she's comfortable with.

"You're an odd one." Morgan shakes her head, and then chuckles softly. "Though I'm one to talk."

At this point, she's already full skinned both wolf corpses, as well as pulled out a number of the canines and a bit of meat, each wrapped neatly in cloth. You have to admit, you were a bit impressed with the sheer efficiency of her work. She'd obviously been at it for a long time.

"So, you on your way to anywhere in particular?" She asks as she packs up her loot.

You point to the slain wolves, and then point deeper into the forest. You intended to track these wolves to their source and eliminate them.

"Tracking wolves? In a getup like that?" Morgan raises an eyebrow. "That a skill they teach in the Black Templars?"

You shrug and point again. You didn't have to chase them, just corner them in their lair.

"Aw jeez." Morgan groans. "Listen, it's going to be dark soon, and I suggest you don't go stomping around the forest once the sun goes down. Direwolves hunt at night and they'll disperse before you can find them. And, well, there's worse things than wolves out here."

You nod, taking in her words.

"Ah, damnit." Morgan sighs as she runs a hand through her hair in frustration. "Look, if I tag along with you, I can guarantee we can find that den and get back to shelter before dark. Are you fine with that?"

Well, you're not going to refuse help that's offered. In a form of acceptance, you raise both your arms in the air, a universal sign of cooperation among the followers of Sol. Morgan cracks a grin at how you must look absolutely silly doing this.

"Okay, your funeral." Morgan raises an eyebrow, not quite convinced. She then takes a deep breath and pulls up her hood. In her hands she holds a finely crafted wood bow. "Ready? Let's go."

And with that, Morgan blazes off into the woods in a flash of green and white.

Despite your armor, you're able to keep pace with the lighter ranger, but only just. You can't help but be a little impressed with how she's able to deftly weave through and around the trees and brush, not losing a single ounce of momentum as she moves. Honestly, if you didn't know any better, she might as well be an elf given how well she could navigate the forest.

By comparison, you're just a clumsy siege machine, just battering your way through obstacles with sheer brute force. While effective, it certainly wasn't as elegant as Morgan's movements.

You briefly wonder where in the world she learned to move like that when she stops and holds a fist in the air to signal a halt. You slow yourself down and trundle up to the kneeling Morgan.

"There." She whispers and points ahead. You look up and see a small cave nestled in a rocky outcropping. Well hidden and well protected against someone not specifically looking for it. "Judging from the tracks, there's probably at least three full grown adults left."

You nod and ready your halberd. However, you don't see any direwolves.

"They're still in the den." Morgan explains, her eyes still locked on the entrance and hand gripping her bow tightly. "If you can draw them out and distract them, I can take them out from a distance."

You point to the clearing and move your arm around in a circular motion. Drawing them out into such an open area would mean those wolves could surround you.

"Don't worry, I'll shoot them down before that can happen." Morgan assures you.

You point to the cave. You can just go in and take them out in close quarters combat.

"You just want to go in?" Morgan frowns. "I mean, you do have the armor for it, but my bow won't be much good in there and that's their home turf inside. You sure you want to do that?"

You tap her shoulder and then point to a nearby tree that could serve as a good vantage point, and then stride forward, halberd at the ready.

"...on your signal, then." Morgan nods as she clambers up the tree.

As Sol's light fades, you walk right up to the mouth of the den, open like the maw of a great beast, the inky void beyond staring directly at you. Without missing a beat, you raise your halberd and bring the hammer end smashing down on a nearby rock, the loud CRACK echoing throughout the area.

You're instantly met with a series of growls, as a trio of direwolves, easily twice the size of the previous ones, stalk out of the den, teeth bared and ready. You knew this look. The look of a cornered beast. That was good. They weren't going to run. Couldn't run.

The three wolves form a defensive V formation. Curiously enough, they don't surround you, instead forming a wall between you and the den. Were they protecting something?

No matter. That just made things simpler.

Well damn!

That's the first 20 of this quest! Now, to explain again, with the FATE POINT system, instead of getting a critical success, you can choose to downgrade to a regular success and gain a FATE POINT, which can be used to negate 1s or reroll a bad roll!

So would you like to bank the 20 for a FATE POINT?

Its still a regular success, so probably not an issue. As opposed to us really failing later down the line and needing a fate point.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have 1 point!

You thrust forward at the first wolf, landing a solid hit as the spear tip plunges right into its shoulder. At the same time, Morgan take a shot, digging an arrow into the third wolf's side and drawing its attention away from you.

However, before you can finish off the first wolf, the second wolf lunges forward, apparently intent in saving its fellow.

You continue your thrust, slamming the first wolf against the rock wall and pushing your halberd in all the way. The wolf gives one last squeal before going quiet. Meanwhile, the second wolf bites and scrabbles uselessly against your armor before falling off with a whimper. You just manage to catch the arrow sticking out of the back of its neck as it slides off, and you take the opportunity to pull your halberd free and slam it down on the second wolf, crushing its skull like a melon.

Meanwhile, the third wolf's body lies at the foot of Morgan's tree, three more arrows protruding from its body.

You give a thumbs up to her. Good work.

"Thanks." Morgan grins and then looks up at the sky. "Shit, it's getting dark already. We have to get moving."

You journey into the den, squinting as your eyes try to adjust to the fading light. Morgan follows close behind, and as you both advance, you can hear a faint sound from within.

"I can't be..." Morgan gasps.

And that's when you see it. The back end of the den opens up into a rather large chamber, and there, nestled in center was a single direwolf pup, mewling helplessly in the darkness.

"Ohmygosh!" Morgan is already past you and picks up the little wolf, hugging it to her chest.

You step forward, arm raised in caution. It might attack her-

"Don't worry, they're harmless at this age!" Morgan assures you as the pup barks happily. "Besides, we can't just kill it, can we?"

Well-

Morgan's eyes narrow, giving you a dangerous look.

Now that you think of it, Templars taking on beasts as pets and companions wasn't unheard of. In fact, one of the order's founders was quite famous for having a direwolf companion, as well.

Maybe it can be tamed, especially at this young age...

You sigh and hold you hand out. Morgan sees you gesture and looks as the pup for a brief second before reluctantly placing it in your hand. You then place the pup on your shoulder, where there was more than enough room for it rest on. You can hear the little pup's happy panting near your ear.

"Hah, that's pretty cute." Morgan chuckles. "Anyways, let's get going. Town's too far at this point, so we'll head for one of my hideouts instead. You fine with that?"

You nod. Not like you had anywhere else to go at this point.

"All right, follow me, then." Morgan motions for you to follow as she heads out of the den.

You follow her out, moving carefully to make sure the pup doesn't fall off. You wonder what suitably heroic name you should give it...
