Chapter 9: >>1339669

June 30th, 1977. 10:00 AM

"No woman no cry... NO WOMAN NO CRY!" The sound of Terry's booming, jovial voice rouses you from your sleep in the backyard. The sounds of Bob Marley and the Wailers drift out of an open window, filling the warm Summer air with the sounds of keyboard and percussion. Sounds like he's in a good mood. Excellent.

You come in through the back door and give him a little wave. "Hey, Terry."

"Hey, J-Man! Lovely day today, isn't it? Sun's shining, air's clean, I don't got a damn allergy headache- things are going fine!"

"Alright! I'm just going to use the shower, alright?"

"Feel free, man."

You duck into the shower and lather up. Hot water and soap after living on the streets for so long is like a taste of heaven. You scrub yourself down thoroughly: you even bother to pull the twigs and leaves out of your beard (fools errand that it is: tomorrow, you know, some new ones will be right back). You're certain the wash-up's going to surprise Mary when she gets up (little sprout always sleeps in late: she'll have to start getting up earlier, what with Summer School starting next Monday).

You take your time with the shower and emerge about 20 minutes later, smelling of soap instead of your usual bouquet of sweat and soil. You turn out into the living room, intent on some brea-

There's a man in a pressed grey suit standing in the front doorway, with an awkward-looking Terry holding the screen door open for him. The combed-back hair, pince-nez, and briefcase tell you that he's some kind of legal figure. He looks around at you.

"Gerald Derwaldt?"

>(Run for the back door)

The lawyer laughs. "No, no. I'm here representing Micheal Wyndham. You have been listed as his legal guardian in case of certain eventualities that, unfortunately, have come to pass. You see, he's recently been checked into the Safe Harbor Extended Care Facility, and likely will not be discharged in the foreseeable future. This mean, naturally, that someone must be entrusted with the right to manage his... considerable financial affairs..."

Claimed that he had been harassed by fairies, if you can believe that. He was found wandering in his own backyard, naked, ranting about them. The doctors believe he is suffering from schizophrenia. Tragic, very tragic."

You shift on your feet. "Yeah, yeah. So, what're my responsibilities?"

"Oh, most of it is formalities, let me assure you: you'll just need to approve major alterations in the affairs of his trust, assume responsibility for the execution of his will, etc, etc-this will all be after the background check, of course."

"Yes, conditionally. And the term is 'psychiatric care center'. Safe Harbor prides itself on being far more advanced than the horror shows of yesteryear."

"So, can I see-"

"Unfortunately not right now. I've been informed that his state is delicate at the moment, and that any visitors risk triggering another delusional episode. Now-" the lawyer snaps open his briefcase and removes several sheets of paper- "here is the official surrender of custody, the filing for involuntary committal (you will need to fill that out within a week to have his treatment finalized), a number of forms you will need to fill out and submit to the firm of Jones, Jones, and Morley by the 15th, and a letter that Micheal left instructions to be given to you in private trust. Now, I am legally obligated to give it to you, but I would advise against reading it: it is likely he was not sound of mind when he wrote it. Good day, Mr. Derwaldt, Mr. Freedman."

"Jerry-

I am very sorry to impose on you like this, but I'm afraid I have no choice. I have discovered a conspiracy of great import that endangers the entire Portland underground, and have reason to believe that this conspiracy intends to silence me. I have made you my legal guardian to ensure your aid. Should you release me from my confinement, or, if I am dead, help uncover my murderers, I shall be forever in your debt. I intend that literally: I shall swear an oath of lifelong loyalty to you if I am alive, and name you sole inheritor of all my assets, no strings attached, if I am dead.
Of course, you will be working under a time limit: should the initial probing into your background raise any irregularities (as I suspect it might), you will likely face charges of fraud and identity theft. So, please, act swiftly.

-Kindest regards, Micheal"

Terry rushes over to the kitchen and starts tearing through a cabinet, eventually emerging with a couple of jars and some bread. "Guess this'll have to do." He pulls a couple of slices out, smears peanut butter and grape jelly on them, and smashes them together.

"Okay, she ain't gonna starve. That's good. Now, let's get on."

You give him a rundown on what's happened to Micheal.

Aren't we known as the magical hobo who got his act together from PTSD from the war? I don't think it'd be a particular change of our history.
>>
>>1357419
Guys! this is a trap,or at least a very bad move.

If we go in, either as a patient or as a guest, as Mr. Derwaldt and Michael brakes free, they won't take 2 minutes to figure out that his legal guardian was at the facility by the time he escaped.

We could try to go in saying that we are just a random war vet and have no ID, but that would jeopardize Oswald since he brought in a maniac that escaped and took one of the patients with him.

my idea is:

Break in tonight while security is lighter, A place like this probably doesn't even have a cctv system, and if they have it's one of those shitty tape one's since this is the 70s. so to prepare for this we have to:

1- Ask Oswald everything he knows about the facility, where Michael could be, where the security staff hangs around and if he knows about any back doors, aslo, if he could visit a patient or bring a new one to create a distraction, that would be nice.

2- We have to go to conrad's (he will know it's us when he hears the door, if someone knocks at night bringing trouble it's always us) We calm the neurotic lost down and explain to him that we only need gear and not his direct involvement, we are searching for something to help us with the break in, a multi-key or a shadow cape or something. We pay him with a favor (he knows we get shit done) or we just borrow it for a price we can pay

and finally, we Metal Gear solid our way to free Michael

I know, I know, It's a terrible fucking plan, but the last one worked UAHuHAu

but seriously, we should leave as little evidence that Derwaldt was there as possible
>>
>>1357598

Or
Terrible plan option 2, we ask conrad for a really quick id that's not done with a permanent marker and try to go in with it, but that would still put oswald on a position of having to explain everything after we are done
>>
>>1357598
>No way in hell. I'm not going on record as a nut.
That is the last thing we need. C'mon, between Oswald and Niko, they have to have some connections. We leave Micheal in there he's vulnerable, and someone could come for him.
>>
>>1357532
"What would that mean for me?"

"Well, I was thinking of getting you checked in for a 72-hour holding period: I'll claim your condition had a sudden relapse into acute delusions. That'd give you time to talk to Micheal and help him out a bit. If you vanished during that period, it would be bad, but if you can convince the doctors that he's sane, or blackmail/bribe them into letting him out, then you could stride out 3 days later with a clean bill of health."

We're not on record as being the Guardian of Mary so there's no risk there. Our cover already has PTSD listed on it so a break wouldn't be so harmful. I think we should go with the plan, seems straightforward and effective

"Well, you just get plenty of rest for now."

Doctor Jean gets up and leaves you alone in your room, with its greenish walls and spartan bed.

You sit around for a second, then get up and saunter out the door. The hallway is narrow and lit by high-set and barred windows. Still, the hallway is lined in carpet and the wall lamps have little shades. It's more like a fortified rest home than an asylum. Maybe it isn't so bad here, after all.

You head along the passage that leads towards the Bell Rock building.

The Bell Rock building's immense facade towers above you as you walk along the roofed breezeway that connects the two buildings. It looks like how an asylum is expected to: imposing, threatening, with a very clear boundary between OUT and IN. The door ahead is deadlocked: looks like it's electronically controlled: damn newfangled tech. There are two guards on the door, their schoolboy haircuts doing little to distract from their musclebound frames and truncheons. One of them spots you coming up, nudges his buddy, and walks toward you, one hand raised up.

"Woah there, grandpa! Where do you think you're going? You don't want to go in here, I promise you that. The boys in here'll tear you up and eat you for lunch!"

"Ooh, I'll trust you on that, sonny. Who's all in there, anyways?"

"This is where we keep the REAL crazy ones, who we think might hurt themselves, or someone else."

"And the incurables."

"Yeah, and the ones who don't respond to treatment. Trust me, you don't want anything to do with the people in here."

"Alright, alright."

The guards resume their wide-legged stances at either side of the locked door.

(Perception: you spot the badge on the uniforms of the guards: a stylized lighthouse. It seems familiar...)

You're in the Hatteras-Bell Rock Breezeway.

You prowl around Bell Rock for what seems like forever, looking for another way in. Sadly, the building seems to lack easily-reachable windows, convenient sewer access pipes, or side doors propped open by guards on their smoke break. You MIGHT be able to get into the sewer network... if you vaulted the wrought-iron fence that encloses the three buildings of Safe Harbor and run off the cliff face to the West.

Just as you're about to give up, you see the locks on the front door of Bell Rock disengage and a bleary-eyed janitor wheel a laundry hamper out towards White Shoal. Must be laundry day. You carefully follow him down into the laundry room undetected:

As soon as the first load of cleans come out and the janitor's back is turned, you dive into the hamper and curl yourself up at the bottom. After a few minutes, you hear the cart push off and start rolling again. After a few bumpy minutes, you hear an electronic lock buzz open. You're in.

You wheel along for a bit longer into a space with cool, damp air, the only sound being the soft roll of the wheels and the occasional moan, susurration, or scream echoing off the walls. The wheels stop and you hear a fist knocking on a door.

"Hey, George! Got that clean bedding for the lifers, gonna need some safety."

"I thought their bedding got changed this week."

"Yeah, but Walter got loose last night and, well..."

"Smeared his shit over everything again?"

"Yeah. Half of me wanted to just leave it to next week, but that'd just REEK at that point, and I won't have the stomach by then."

"Yeah, yeah, got you."

Sounds like the janitor's going to have a security detail on him. While he's getting stuff out of the hamper you're currently in.

You hear a noise like growling from within. It sounds too deep and bassy to be fully human.

"Ronnie?... Ron-"

The patter of feet across concrete, and the sick THUD of something hitting metal full-force.

"HATE YOU! FUCK YOU! KILL YOU! STINK-FLESH SHIT-EATER! KILL!!!!-[/red] Oh, JESUS, make it stop! FUCK YOU MAN-PIG! WEAK! WEAK!!!!!"

You cautiously lift yourself out of the hamper and press yourself against the cold stone wall next to the open door. Then, you lean around the corner and take a look inside the room.

A well-formed guard is busy putting a wild-eyed and ill-kept patient in an armbar while the janitor desperately fumbles with a syringe. You can see into the eyes of the patient, and something alien stares back at you, unseeing and untamed.

"I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOULS, PUTRID SHIT-FILTH MAGGOT!" -suddenly, the thing is gone, and there's a desperate man in the grip: "Oh, JESUS, what did you people do to me! I can feel it moving around inside me! Get it out! GET IT OUT!" The eyes go strange again. "Stop whining, runt, or I'll beat it out of you!" The patient redoubles his efforts to break free.

The guard has big beads of sweat on his forehead, despite the cold air. "JESUS, man, hurry up with that tranq! What are they FEEDING these freaks in ET?"

You pull back, round the corner away from the scene, and look around. You appear to be in the Incurables ward. There's an emergency map mounted by a stairwell.

I looked up their financial records, with a couple favors- they've got money flowing in from somewhere, but it's not the government like they say. They're experimenting on people, doing something to them: patients are vanishing from the official records. I had myself thrown in here to investigate, and I found some things. "No way. We're going back to Portland, then I'm coming back with an army."

Micheal groans and pulls at his hair. "You don't get it! These people: they're everywhere! They got me put away like it was nothing. My family is very powerful, and they could reach out and touch us like it was nothing. If we waste time, they'll be gone! Besides, in case you haven't noticed, this place is a couple hours away from Portland by car."

"It is?"

"Yes! Don't you read the brochures?"

"I kind of... came in unexpectedly."

"Fine. Listen, we don't have to go in like the FBI. We should just get some evidence."

You're right, but Oswald did mention that "certain events" made this issue a rather pressing and worrying one. I think he knows something's up.

All the more reason to reach the end of this rabbit hole ASAP. Since they grabbed Micheal because he got too close, they'll definitely notice if we leave with him, giving them more than enough time to get rid of the evidence. Also, we shouldn't trust the Courts wholeheartedly with this, if its a far reaching a conspiracy as they said. This could even tie into the vampire thing at Nightcrawlers.

You take a few steps back, gain a bit of momentum, and kick the door's hinge at the right angle to knock it out of place. You and Micheal work together to shift it out of place.

"Alright. Now: let's get out of here. Follow me, there's an emergency exit on the roof. I'll take us a route that doesn't have cameras."

You wind towards a stairwell...
>>
>>1365026
You come out on the roof to the sight of the gorgeous sunset over the Pacific and an inmate in a straightjacket staring out at the compound, apparently having an argument with himself. One of the voices is hoarse and rustly:

"Blue. Orange. Red. Purple. Green. Black. Octarine. All at once." "Please... dear God, please stop, I can't take any more..." "False. You can always take more." "I just want you out. Don't you want that too?" "True. But the knowledge of how is also required." "No, no, no, NO! I'll kill us!" "Why?" "You know why, you know everything. I fucking hate you..."

The figure suddenly turns around. He might have been good-looking, once, but now his eyes are grey and lifeless, his hair is a kind of yellowy-white, and his skin is criss-crossed with blackish scabs. When he speaks, it almost sounds like the two voices are overlapping:

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"What are you? Who do you want?"

You remember something from Sane Eddie about how the natives of certain tribes would use poisonous mushrooms or agonizing pain to go into trance states and go on spirit journeys. Despite his anecdotes about 'seeing God' and 'feeling cosmic oneness', you never let him mix deathcaps and boot-varnish liquor, but his crazy ideas might be useful now.

"Listen, get down with us and I might be able to find something in the woods that'll help you."

"Good. Help me down: this body doesn't seem to have arms. Inefficient. Frustrating."
"You... ASSHOLES! Don't help this thing! GET IT OUT OF ME NOW!!!"

You and Micheal climb down, with Micheal supporting the inmate's body as he half-thrashes down the ladder, two intelligences at war. You bolt to a nearby gate hanging half-open (fresh bloodstains and bootprints in the dirt suggest an inmate fled this way) and scatter into the wilderness.

Once you're certain you aren't being tailed, you go hunting for mushrooms. Roll Intelligence + Science + Ecology bonus -2 (2 dice) to correctly identify hallucinogenic mushrooms.

"Ah, excellent, this is going to work. Wish this body had arms."

Micheal unfastens the restraints on the straightjacket.
"Oh! Good... Yes! This worked. Now, if you will follow me..."

The inmate wipes some mushroom flecks from his mouth and strides off in a seemingly random direction into the forest. He seems... strangely more balanced, now, but also... inhuman. You and Micheal share a look and follow.

"I barely- how do you know that? Are you reading my mind?"

"I am Akh."

"Goddamn- look, can you answer this question at least? Who the hell are the people running Pharos?"

For the first time, an emotion creeps into the strange, whispering voice.

"What are you talking about?"

"That which is true. And here we are."

You break out of the woods as night falls. You stand on the edge of a clearing cut out around a rickety-looking wooden building, about four stories tall. Dim orange lights shine out from the inside.

"I have brought you here. I cannot go further. Go, and destroy them all."

The scene around you dissolves, and you find yourself strapped in a wooden chair, facing a pair of people dressed in the white robes of doctors. One of them is a bland-looking, balding man, wearing nondescript glasses and holding a clipboard: you can see a silver ring with a complex mandala embossed on it on one hand. The other is tall and gangly, looks vaguely Indian, and has several bird feathers braided into his hair. The short one speaks first, with the same clinical tone:

"I'm not going to lie here: you will not make it out of this situation. Your friend Micheal has already been captured and processed. However, your eventual fate can be made comfortable- or very uncomfortable- based on your cooperation. Now: who sent you? The Arrow? The Veil? The Eye? I've never even heard of the organizations you're talking about. And you don't know where I came from. I'll answer your questions you bastard, if you answer mine.

>>1368903

Possibly, depends on whether they were lying about Michael's capture, or perhaps Akh since he would know we're in trouble and where to go to
>>
Alright, so, second round of voting:

>(Persuasion) If you promise to not let anyone do me harm I'll tell you what you asked.

>(Subterfuge): Look, if you promise to let me go, I can tell you everything.

"...You win. If you promise to let me go after I talk, I can tell you everything."

The bland man nods. "I suppose that's fair enough. I agree."

You feel the squeeze on your arm, and the bland man starts suddenly.

"That... did you just oathbind me?"

You choke down a laugh and flex your wrists: the restraints pop instantly under the power of your Terms.

>Yes I did, sonny jim. And now, I'll be taking my leave. Peace out.

>And this, boy, is why you don't play games with faeries. Good-bye.

>Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. Take my advice and get out of town: if I could trick you this easy, the Horned King will rip you apart.

>(Intimidate) Alright you jackasses, where's Micheal?
Let's see if we can't get information, and maybe harvest some glamour, we are a scary son of a gun if we want to be.

We have 3 points in intimidation, two points in presence, and we have the show of strength specialty. Since we just snapped those ropes like nothing, does that count? (I know we didn't actually use strength, but it sure looks like it)

"Alright, jackasses, where's Micheal?"

"Alive and in Portland. Now, do not come here again, hedge-pedlar or fairy or whatever you are: if I sense your presence again, I will leave just enough of your mind intact for you to understand all that happens next."

The bland man puts down his clipboard, shakes his arms, then makes a flurry of sharp gestures while chanting in a saliva-choked tongue.

The environment around you suddenly shatters into a million colors, which whirl around you briefly before aligning back into the form of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, bright under the noonday sun. You feel the Terms of your oath melt away, confirming that this isn't just another trick.

Micheal opens the door when he sees you and immediately pulls you into an embrace.

"Oh, thank heavens! I thought you were dead!"

"Nope. Uh..."

Micheal starts, and lets go. "Sorry. I waited for an hour, but you were a no-show, so the invalid and myself split off. He refused to come back to Portland with me, something about how he needed to get more of those mushrooms, but I came back and raised the alarm. The Summer Court sent scouts, but apparently whoever was there has vanished overnight. I don't understand it, it's like magic!"

"That's because it is, Oswald. Listen, help me get everything you can on magic. REAL magic. I need to know what we're up against."

Chapter 10, "Safe Harbor", complete. Special Chapter begins tomorrow.

Heh so those mages seriously couldn't tell what we where?

Sucks to be them I guess. Glad we rescued Micheal.

Wonder if the mages will just drop this like they should.

Are the mages unaware of changelings or did they just not expect one of us to be there?
