You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were watching Paz struggling in her attempts to beat your Fletcher sisters at Call of Duty. A bit of a steep task considering how ruthlessly good they had all gotten at it. While you did have the temptation to give the poor supercarrier some pointers, you instead stay back to observe. After all, part of being a shipgirl was having to learn through adversity, and you're guessing she didn't experience a lot of it when she was "built".

"Nnnnnnnnh." Paz frowns as her fingers tap away at her controller. "How come you're all so much faster than me?"

"SMGs are the meta right now." Wren says simply as she double jumps over a wall and empties her mag into Paz's character.

"Faster movement, faster rate of fire, and faster aim time!" Daly giggles.

"Basically faster everything!" Luce nods as she knifes Daly's character in the back. "You made a mistake going for the LMG! That's a weapon for noobs!"

"It's still so hard to keep with you all!" Paz pouts.

"Well, maybe you can play ARMA then, but that's for NEEEEEERDS like Portland!" Hazelwood chuckles.

"Who's a nerd?" Portland asks humorlessly as she steps through the door.

The room suddenly goes deathly silent save for the gunshots and explosions still echoing from the TV.

"You heard them, NEEEEEEEEEERD." You tease as you stick your tongue out at Portland.

The other Fletchers all follow suit, sticking their tongues out in unison. Not one to be left out, Paz does it, too.

"Apparently." Portland sighs, apparently used to this sort of abuse. "Anyways, Hoel, are you busy right now?"

"Depends." You shrug noncommittally. "What do you have in mind?"

"Seems like Iowa and Enterprise are gathering up a bunch of the Japanese ships for some proper training exercises." Portland cracks a sly grin. "They're looking for volunteers to be the OPFOR."

You look to Anna, who simply shrugs.

"I sounds kinda fun...?" She wonders.

"It does sound fun!" Paz chirps.

You turn back to Portland, who's still waiting for an answer.

"Sure, why not?" You shrug.

"All right then, follow me." Portland nods.

"Oh, oh, I wanna go see!" Paz giggles as she tosses her controller to one of the Fletchers.

"Mmmmm, this would be interesting." Johnston says in agreement.

"Yeah, it would be good to see what the Japanese shipgirls are capable of." Heerman nods.

So you, your sisters, and Paz and Anna all follow Portland out to the bay, where you could see an assortment of both American and Japanese shipgirls gathered. Portland continues to lead you through the crowd up to Iowa and Enterprise, who were obviously running the show.

"Oh, ya got volunteers?" Iowa says cheerfully. "Nice job, Sweet Pea!"

"It was nothing." Portland insists.

"So, Hoel, as expected you'd come up to bully some Japs!" Iowa chortles.

"Iowa, this is an exercise, not a grudge match." Enterprise tuts.

"Yeah, yeah, I know." Iowa chuckles and turns back to you. "So, Hoel, what do ya want? We still need volunteers to act as carrier targets, torpedo dodging for the battleships, or a straight up fight against their destroyers!"

"A DD battle, of course!" You grin, eyes shining in anticipation.

"Ha, thought you'd say that!" Iowa fistbumps you. "So, well, we got three teams waiting for a about. Let's see..."

Iowa then hands you a clipboard, showing all the current destroyer teams. Right away, you notice DesDiv6 on there, as well as Fubuki, Mutsuki, and Yuudachi. You also noticed another team consisting of Akebono, Ushio, and Kiyoshimo.

Hm, well, DesDiv6 by far probably need the training the most, but you were also interested in seeing what their more experienced destroyers were capable of...

"Nah, I think I can take 'em on by myself." You grin confidently.

"Dohohoho, gonna play a Princess then, huh?" Iowa cackles. "Well, be sure not to break them TOO much..."

That's when you notice Portland scribbling something furiously in a notepad, as if jotting down important details. You shoot her a curious and accusing look. Portland shoots a totally innocent look back at you, the glare from the sunlight off her glasses lenses briefly hiding her eyes.

But, well, you really couldn't say anything here, so you just shake your head and focus your attention back on Iowa.

"So when do we start?" You ask.

"In a few minutes." Iowa assures you.

"Actually, one more thing." Enterprise cuts in. "I know you have a lot of modern equipment on you. While DesDiv6 did go through a round of upgrades, they really aren't quite up to your level. Are you going to be using your full capability on them...?"

"They won't learn anything otherwise." You shrug. "But uh, I'll gauge things as they go depending on how well they do."

"Hmmmm, I suppose that will suffice." Enterprise nods. "We've already given them the signal to deploy, so they'll be moving out in search pattern. We haven't told them what exactly they're going to face though, so be sure to surprise them!"

"Oh, I definitely will." You grin.

"Knock 'em all out!" Johnston cracks her knuckles. "Make 'em work for their victory, like a boss battle!"

"Or do something a little more realistic and have them face a cunning enemy." Heerman steps in. "Scout them out and then separate and pick them off one by one. I'd love to see how they'd deal with that."

"Hmmm, maybe I'll take 'em out one by one like you say, Heerman." You chuckle darkly. "Like straight outta Alien!"

"We don't want it THAT extreme." Heerman frowns.

"Yeah, no facehugging them and planting eggs inside them!" Johnston teases.

You can hear the scraping of Portland's pen pick up speed. Goddamnit.

"ALL RIGHT, can I head out, now?" You groan.

"Yes, it's okay to do so." Enterprise chuckles.

"Go get 'em!" Iowa encourages you as she slaps on the back fairly hard.

"Good luck, Hoel!" Anna calls out.

"We'll be watching, Big Sis!" Paz says happily, her planes already deploying to give her a better view.

You drop down into the water, your Rig materializing. As your engines spool up, you activate your radar, pulsing it out into the ocean, where you can see a number of artificial obstacles set up to provide some sort of cover. Almost immediately, you could pick out the four destroyers of DesDiv6. They were in a typical dispersed search formation, but there staying within visual contact of each other.

Good, they were doing the right thing. But how would they act under pressure?

You could see Ikazuchi and Akatsuki taking the lead at the front of the formation. They were always the more hotheaded of the group. Inazuma and Hibiki were bringing up the rear. Now, Inazuma was probably the weakest the link. Her heart was in the right place, but from what you saw she was easy to panic and not particularly aggressive. Taking her out would be a quick way to shave down their numbers.

Conversely, you got the feeling that Hibki was the most powerful out of their group. She just seemed to emanate this aura that kept her calm under any sort of pressure. Focusing on her first was risky, but if you could pull it off, you would deny the group a very important anchor when things started to go bad.

Then again, either Ikazuchi or Akatsuki would be pretty easy to bait into a trap...

You settle on knocking out Akatsuki first. Your turrets swivel into place, ready to fire. Naturally, you were loaded up with training ammo. Your shells couldn't actually cause any damage, though they would make a huge mess since the explosive was swapped out with paint.

Still, with your continual radar surveillance, it was a simple matter to stay ahead of the destroyer formation as you waited for your chance. Up above, your radar also picked up a number of faerie planes and drones, no doubt observing the training exercise. On the shore, you could see lines of shipgirls and base personnel also coming to watch.

Anyways, you think you see a good ambush point. You swing behind an anchored Ticonderoga cruiser and start belching smoke from your smoke generator. It slowly rises up and over the parked cruiser, basically giving your position away.

And just like that, you see Akatsuki's contact break off from the group as she rushes forward to investigate.

Almost too easy.

You grab Akatsuki by the collar, ready to knock her down and "eliminate" her, but the spunky little destroyer reacted a little faster than you thought.

"IT'S A TRAP! IT'S HOEL-" She manages to yell through her radio before you slap your hand on her head and slam it down into the water, stunning her before you pump a trio of shots into her Rig, splattering it red paint.

"Aaaah! My hair!" Akatsuki sputters. "I just spent all morning brushing it!"

"This ain't a place to be a lady now." You grin to her before you could hear the sounds of shouting and gunfire. Another pulse of your radar shows that the remainder of DesDiv 6 have tightened up their formation, allowing them to concentrate their firepower.

That was going to be an issue. You could always try attacking them head on before they could fully regroup, or just keep leading them on a merry chase.

You figure that you could continue leading them along. Eventually they'll make a mistake you can capitalize on.

All you had to do was not get hit. Simple enough, right?

You manage to dodge the majority of the shells as they fall around you like rain. However, you're suddenly jarred when you feel something strike you feel something strike the back of your right heel, covering it blue paint. Your right screw immediately loses power to simulate an engine hit, effectively cutting your speed in half.

"I-I hit!" You hear a surprised Inazuma squeak over an open channel

Of course.

With your engine power hit, there was no way to outrun the other destroyers, even with your upgraded diesel electric propulsion. You could see DesDiv 6 closing the distance quickly, Hibiki leading the charge.

This were going to get interesting...

Well, it was time for Hard Mode. You spin around as your radar gains solid locks on the approaching destroyer girls. Your VLS cells lurch open with flame and fury as eight missiles streaking into the sky, immediately changing course to lock on to their targets...

To their credit, the DesDiv6 girls react quite quickly, immediately aiming their guns skyward in a futile attempt to shoot down the missiles before they could hit. Unfortunately for them, shooting down prop planes that could only go a few hundred miles per hour was very different from shooting down missiles that could fly several times faster.

You allocated four of your missiles to take down Hibiki alone. The poor girl honestly had no chance all as all four SM-6s converge on her and explode into a cloud of red paint.

Ikazuchi and Inazuma manage to last a bit longer. But only just a bit. Even they were able to avoid direct hits from your missiles, effectively knocking them out of the fight.

And just like that, an airhorn blasts your eardrums, signalling the end of the exercise.

"Excellent job, everyone!" Enterprise says cheerfully over the radio. "Everybody, please proceed back to the dock for debriefing!"

"Hey, you girls okay?" You ask as you sail over to DesDiv 6 to check on them.

"Still functional." Hibiki says calmly, though somewhat glumly as she puts her hat back on, now drenched in paint.

"You're a big fat cheater, Hoel!" Akatsuki whines, her cheeks puffed up like balloons. "Using missiles like that is no fair!"

>You're right. And that's the point.

They lasted longer than expected, with Akatsuki scouting and managing to get the warning out and the massed fire taking out propulsion, which would have made Hoel vulnerable to followup strikes from any main forces DesDiv6 would be supporting.

"You're right. It was cheating." You nod in agreement. "And that's the point."

"H-huh?" Akatsuki hesitates, caught off by your answer. "But that doesn't make any-"

"Hush." Hibiki quiets her, apparently intent on listening to what you have to say.

"So think of it like this." You continue. "You four are all chasing an Abyssal destroyer. He's leading you on a merry chase around the corner of an island, and then BAM. An entire flotilla of Abyssal cruisers are right there waiting for you. Would you be complaining that the Abyssals are cheating?"

"No..." Akatsuki grumbles.

"And why's that?" You ask.

"Because we'll be sunk, nanodesu?" Inazuma answers.

"Exactly." You nod, rewarding her with a headpat. "Out there, you can't expect the Abyssals to play fair, especially the Princesses. They keep pulling out all sorts of random bullshit every time we face them, so we have no choice but to answer with our own."

"So, you're saying that cheating is always the best way?" Ikazuchi asks.

"Well, uh..." You pause.

"Like all of Ashigara's dumb math tests?" Akatsuki brightens up.

"Or, or cut in line at Mamiya's, nanodesu?" Inazuma wonders.

"Multiple boyfriends?" Hibiki asks.

You feel like something was getting lost in translation here...

"Whoa, whoa, hold up there." You pause. "Why are you talking about BOYFRIENDS of all people?"

"Hm, well, Ashigara keeps talking about getting one all the time." Hibiki shrugs. "And Kongou has also being talking about your Captain. And I suppose a lot of the larger ships talk about getting boyfriends, too."

"Huh..." You frown. "I guess that makes sense."

"I wonder if I'm old enough..." Hibiki wonders.

"N-no, it'll be endless work, nanodesu!" Inazuma coughs.

"Dohohoho, I'll get the BEST boyfriend with my ladylike charm!" Akatsuki give a haughty laugh.

"I'm not too sure what's going on, but it sounds fun!" Ikazuchi smiles.

You wonder how San Fran would have taken all this. Despite her rough, crusty, and kinda smelly outward appearance, she was still looking out for these girls and wishing them the best.

And at this point, you were all getting closer to the shore. Should you give San Fran a heads up about this?

You decide to give San Fran a heads up that DesDiv 6 were starting to ask boys now, so you open up a private comm line with her.

"Hey, San Fran." You say teasingly. "Your girls re starting to become adults."

"Oh god, that shit again?" San Fran groans. "Thanks for letting me know. Gotta keep a closer eye on them next time..."

"Where did they even get this idea to begin with?" You wonder.

"Ever since they found out about this fucking comic called Love x Radar." San Fran sighs. "Apparently it's very anatomically accurate."

Oh dear lord...
