Because who doesn't want to rule an Empire?

Dark Empire Quest is a Star Wars game that will have us attempting to rebuild the Galactic Empire from the ashes of civil war. We will do this from two perspectives, one from that of the Reborn Emperor, managing fleets of war ships, legions of soldiers, and cadres of Sith and dark Jedi to conquer the galaxy. The second perspective will be nearly the polar opposite, Captain Alana Tyrna, a lowly captain of an Imperial Strike-Class cruiser as she (attempts) to climb the ranks, survive and (potentially) excel in battles.

STAR WARS
Episode VII
DARK EMPIRE

Following the Emperor's death at Endor, the once unstoppable Galactic Empire has cracked and began to crumble. While the members of the Rebel Alliance come together to form the NEW REPUBLIC, the remnants of the Empire begin to tear themselves apart at the hands of IMPERIAL WARLORDS who each seek to install them-self as the next emperor. With nearly half the galaxy in the hands of the New Republic, the IMPERIAL REMNANT seems powerless to stop the rebel advance.

Meanwhile, in the chaotic DEEP CORE of the galaxy, on the lush world of BYSS, the Emperor's most loyal followers, the DARK SIDE ELITE, gather with the knowledge that their emperor shall return, his dark side energy coming to inhabit a clone body. Their leader EXECUTOR SEDRISS eagerly awaits his master, having marshaled the remaining truly loyal forces to begin a grand campaign of re-conquest, returning the galaxy back into its rightful hands . . .

I’ll allow about ten minutes or so for each vote, write-ins encouraged, and I’ll try to incorporate them as best I can if possible.
For any resident EUfags out there, while I am borrowing HEAVILY from Dark Empire, some of the goofier stuff (world devastators, Galaxy Gun, ridiculously big Eclipse Star Destroyer) will probably be left by the way side unless people really want it.

Near the galactic center in the Deep Core lies the heavily populated, tropical world of Byss. An oasis world separated from the rest of the inhabited galaxy by a snaking hyperspace corridor that weaves and winds through the dense star clusters and black holes that make up the galactic core, a natural maze that scores of imperial scoutship pilots were sacrificed to chart. Byss is, and always has been, the final bastion of the empire, a refuge for the Emperor and, if need be, a staging base to restore order.
It is for this last purpose that Byss is currently being employed, in orbit, extensive shipyards that ring the planet are endlessly working on war ships, the tools of war for the empire. Tie fighters in limitless waves, shuttles, scout ships, landing craft, frigates, cruisers. The angular, white wedges of star destroyers in various stages of construction, dwarfed by a nearly completed super star destroyer, flat black and intended to be the flagship of the fleet assembling here.
A constant stream of freighters from worlds outside of the core ply the hyperlanes to keep the Imperial war machine fed. Their crews and ships vetted and carefully inspected to ensure the empire’s operations here remained secret.
On Byss itself, in a subterranean complex deep beneath the Imperial citadel, the Dark Side elite, seven force-wielders fiercely loyal to Palpatine have assembled. Their leader, Sedriss, is also the interim leader of all the military forces gathered here, an Executor serving as an extension of the Emperor’s will.
They assemble in a darkened chamber full of the whir and hum of mysterious machinery dedicated to keeping the emperor's clone bodies alive, waiting for the triumphant rebirth of their leader.
>>
You emerge from the cloning chamber in a wash of steam, exhausted after the intensive force rites needed to transfer your soul into this vessel, but never the less, invigorated by the new, younger body. Before you, the Dark Side elite stand. Sedriss kneels before you, the others following his lead.
“My master,” he says.
You eye your disciples carefully before speaking. “Arrise, Sedriss. You have done well to hold onto faith.”
Sedriss’s expression falters for a moment, and you notice the door to the chamber open, spilling pale light into the room, silhouetting three figures.

Sate Pestage enters, flanked by two Death Troopers Pestage was your Grand Vizier and for all intents and purposes the man who ran the day-to-day business of the empire allowing you to focus on more delicate matters. By Sedriss’s expression, it’s clear he feels nothing but contempt and embarrassment for the man being led to you now.

“My liege,” Pestage begins, a sheen of sweat on his face. “I- I have-,”

“The Grand Vizier,” Sedriss begins, Pestage’s title poison in his mouth, “Has much to answer for. During your absence, he has allowed your empire to . . . wither.”

“I did my best your highness,” Pestage pleads, “Without your firm guiding hand, the admirals and moffs turned against me- against each other! I came here only once it was clear Coruscant was no longer safe.”

You feel his fear, radiating through the force, just as you feel the disgust your adepts feel for him.

“What should be done with him, master?” Sedriss asks. His voice is detached and impartial, but his eyes are lit with fire.

“Take him to the dungeons,” you say, Pestage shrinking underneath your piercing gaze. “Until I have thought of a more suitable outcome.”

“My liege-!” Pestage is cut off in a gasp as the two death troopers seize his arms and whirl him around and drag him from the cloning chamber.

“Now that you have returned, master, we have much business to attend to. Your empire has suffered greatly without you. As the Grand Vizier said, Coruscant is lost to us and most of our military has turned on one another in a bid for power.”

At the mention of Thrawn’s name, Sedriss, again, looks acutely uncomfortable.

“Master,” he begins, visibly searching for the right words, “Some of your most trusted warriors have lost faith in you after your long absence. Many more don’t know of your return.” Seeing your impatience, he continues, “Thrawn has already returned from the Unkown Regions and has set himself up as ruler of his own slice of the galaxy and seems intent on drawing the rest under his command.”
Before you can reply he continues quickly, “A faction in the Outer Rim has sprung up as well under Admiral Zsinj. There is still a ‘central’ government, ostensibly loyal to the idea of empire under Ysanne Isard.”

You’re hardly surprised to hear that the Director of Intelligence would make a power grab for herself.

“Isard is primarily responsible for driving Pestage from Coruscant back to Byss. He lost control of the situation there. This also doesn’t consider the rebellion which has grown significantly in size over the past years. “
Sensing displeasure, Sedriss quickly adds, “Although, once you make your presence felt, I have no doubt many will flock to your banner, my master.”

“No matter,” you say, striding past the kneeling adepts, Sedriss standing to follow behind you, the others filing in as you leave the cloning chamber headed for the turbolift. “The squabbling of insects. In time, they will have no choice but to return to us.”

“It will be as you say,” Sedriss says with a slight bow.

“And what of this ‘New Republic’? Has the rebellion really progressed so far?”

Sedriss replied quickly “Insignificant, my master. They are a scattered coalition of fools.”

You briefly consider remining Sedriss that those ‘fools’ have come very close to successfully toppling the empire you worked so hard to build, but instead opt to let him talk.

“They do have control over many sectors, but they are stretched thin and lack centralized authority. The only reason they haven’t been crushed yet is because of the pitiful state the Imperial Warlords are in, too busy trying to fill your throne and not concerned enough with keeping the empire intact.”

No, the Dark Side Elite are all that remain of your force sensitives, though they could always been expanded, improved, etc. The Inquisition ended with the supposed "eradication" of the Jedi shortly before the Battle of Yavin.

Sedriss scowls as the turbolift comes to a halt, the doors sliding open revealing your throne room at the top of the citadel. “Skywalker,” he says the word as a curse, “He plays at being a Jedi, he is, with the encouragement of the New Republic government, trying to rebuild that old order. They are desperate to stave off the inevitable collapse of their decadent regime. Leia Organa Solo is one of the primary figureheads of the rebellion now, as always. She is attempting to play politics to keep the republic together.”

Even as Sedriss talks, you feel the familiar burning desire to have Skywalker’s power as your own. Vader, traitor though he was, was virtually indispensable as your iron fist. You have the Dark Side Elite, though they can scarcely be called “elite” in comparison to the power you wield, or Vader, or even young Skywalker for that matter. Sedriss himself, despite all his loyalty is a poor substitute for a true Sith. “What can you tell me about what systems we control?” You ask, taking your familiar place on your throne.

“Though they are few, they are well defended, and out of sight of most. On the surface, we pledge fealty to Issard. She believes that I am running a small fiefdom of my own in the Deep Core, she has no idea of our true strength, and if she did know I don’t think she would sit idly by. We stand like a sword suspended above her head, pointed at Coruscant.” Sedriss reigns in his excitement and continues, “Otherwise, you stand supreme within your domain. Pestage was the only other figure of any consequence and of course he’s been . . . secured.” You see the Exectuor hesitate a moment before continuing, “There is a very small matter that requires your attention. Your flagship is nearing completion in orbit. The ship requires a name, my master.”

It doesn’t take you long to think of a name. “Tarkin,” you say the name of one of those few you might have considered akin to an ally more than a tool. His death you now see, was a harbinger or doom for your empire, one you hope his namesake can reverse.

“I will send word to the construction crew shortly,” Sedriss says.

“What sort of fleet is Tarkin the flagship of?” you ask, “What have you managed to assemble to rebuild my empire, Sedriss?’

“Three battle fleets of our own, my master,” Sedriss replies quickly, the numbers memorized. “Twelve Imperial-Class Star Destroyers and associated escort ships. “A fourth battle fleet of an additional four Star Destroyers is spread across the deep core at critical positions. And of course, the core of your fleet, our Battle Cruiser task force,” Sedriss curls his lip into a sadistic sneer as he finishes, “Three Super Star Destroyers, two of the Allegiance-Class, the third, Tarkin-Class , your flagship.”

Sedriss licks his lips before continuing, “In fact, I have drawn up some battle plans to begin our reconquest of the galaxy. I have two major variants: Operation Darklight, an all-out assault on Coruscant, and Operation Nexu, a smaller-scale attack on Corellia to gain us a foothold in the Core first.”

Exactly, something along those lines.

I re-watched A New Hope recently, the Adywan Revisted fan edit, and I was saddened by the fact that such a cool bad guy is (relatively speaking) barely in Star Wars. I guess he got more screen time in Rogue One, but I found the CGI thing really distracting.

>>1376733
Yeah, he really only has a few scenes that really show off how great a villain he was. Ordering Vader to stand down and blasting Alderaan into dust are both pretty damn memorable to me though.

If you'd ever like some new reading material, the relatively recent book on him in the New Canon was actually a very fun read imo. It expands a lot on his backstory while showing off how important he was in building the Empire up when it first started out.

“Tell me of your plans for the former capital,” you say, lounging back in your throne and enjoying the sweeping vistas of Byss.

“It would be an all-out, headlong assault on Coruscant itself straight along the Byss Run. We would assemble our fleet at Foerost consisting of all three battle fleets and the Tarkin task force and strike at Coruscant. A small reserve force would remain at Ruan to prevent Isard’s forces from possibly cutting us off from the Deep Core. I anticipate a short, sharp engagement in orbit of Coruscant, and then once you announce your triumphant return, the planet will lower its shields and surrender rather than risk offending their Emperor.” Sedriss smiles triumphantly, as if the battle were already won, “We anticipate that Isard has five to six Star Destroyers defending the planet, she does not expect an attack from the rear, all of her attention is on the rebels.”

“The Emperor’s Hand,” you say aloud.

“Master?” Sedriss asks.

“The Emperor’s Hand will return to Byss,” you continue, already imagining the possibilities. Last you saw Mara Jade, she was a deadly weapon in human form. Skilled in subterfuge, espionage, assassination. A dagger poised at your enemies’ hearts, now you would have to forge her into something else. A monster on a leash. If she were still alive.

As you called to her through the force, knowing she would hear if she were still alive, you frowned at the thought that she had failed your last command. You will kill Luke Skywalker!

“If she is still alive, Master,” Sedriss replies, “It will still take her time to return to you.”

“Jade will return to me,” you say confidently, the edges of your conscious mind tingling with the perceptions of the force. Jade has heard you.

“In that case, do we delay our military plans?” Sedriss asks.

“There will be time enough,” you reply, “It took me six years to return to my mortal form, a bit more time won’t upset my plans.” A grin spreads across your face as you feel your future apprentice echo through the force, her pain, her confusion, her twisted relief. “Once I have Jade with me, we can revisit the loyalty of my former servants.”

Sedriss bows deeply, “All is as you say, my master.”

“I require detailed reports on the remains of my empire,” You tell Sedriss, “In order to best determine where best to begin my reconquest.”

Sedriss bows again, “I will see to it personally, master.” He turns and marches from your throne room, through the force you feel him radiating a sense of purpose and determination. So much the better.

Away from Byss, on the cutting edge of the Imperial navy is our second character. A young Imperial officer named Alana Tyrna. We are going to decide some facts about her together so we can make her "our own". A few facts about her are already known.

Like virtually the entire Imperial officer corps, she is human. Unlike most of them, she is female. Alana is young with only a little command experience under her belt. She hails from the Deep Core, and she captains a Strike-Class Medium cruiser.

Let's answer some of our questions about her. To be a bit more focused given the scope of Star Wars, I've come up with some presets. While I'm willing to entertain write-ins, they'd better be gosh darn good.

Firstly, let's decide a bit about Alana's background.

Before going to the Imperial Academy, where was she from, what was her family background?

>Foerost, poor laborer

Might as well go all in with differences in power.

>Byss, Noble

Alright, we have a majority
>writing

Born to the rare breed of nobles who found themselves fortunate enough to be in the good graces of the Emperor during the time Byss was carved out as a citadel for the Emperor. What began as a life of hardship on a new frontier has evolved into one of decadence and prosperity. Alana’s family are among Palpatine’s most loyal supporters and able followers. The heiress to a small fortune, she found herself to compelled to return the favor to her emperor through service.
Of course, her station has its privileges, it’s unlikely that as a woman Alana would have ever been admitted to the Academy on her own, though she quickly proved herself an able student and capable officer.
Afterward she graduated Alana joined the Imperial Navy and sees combat as a crew officer aboard a Star Destroyer at Endor, she was lucky to escape with her life as so many others did not, but she proved herself a skilled officer and was awarded an independent command, assigned as captain to Strike-Class medium cruiser, not the most glorious posting, but a step forward on her career.

Since it will hopefully be her first of several ships as she works through the ranks, we don't need to get too creative with the name, so let’s not go crazy with write-ins.

Shadow droids are baller as hell. I was always sad they weren't in the old Rogue squadron game.

Scylla was a good ship. Old, somewhat ramshackle, even by the empire’s newly relaxed standards, but it had served her well. At any rate, it had kept her alive which was, again, more than many others could say in the dark days and years following the defeat at Endor. Her war experience may have begun at Endor, but it certainly did not end there.

As captain of Scylla, what “claim to fame” does Alana have on her combat record?

Right? I guess they didn't have much EU to pull on at that time? Dark Empire was pretty big at one point.

Scylla had cut her teeth in battle, not against renegade imperial warlords, but actual rebels. Of course, you wouldn’t have it any other way. During the “withdrawal” as it was known in the navy, what was more of a complete route, she had fought in several engagements with various types of rebels.

Primarily it was the “home grown” variety. Local farmboys and smugglers who found themselves in possession of some corvettes and X-Wings and decided now was the time to throw out the empire. When they crossed the Scylla, they didn’t typically live to regret it.

You were thankful you had only fought the more disciplined New republic once. At the abortive Battle of Telti, an Imperial task force trying to secure the droid works there were attacked by a New Republic fleet of Assault Frigates and gunships. You had conducted your ship well in the fight, managing to withdraw her without serious damage. It was not an experience you were keen on not repeating, at least not on terms favorable to the rebels.

>>
You are currently stationed on garrison duty. It seemed it had been that way since your ship had ultimately found itself under the sway of Sedriss’s faction. Personally, Alana felt no great loyalty to the so-called “Imperial Executor”, he was but one warlord of many. He was different than the others however in that his seemed to care little for squabbling over the throne on Coruscant, and he was likewise uninterested in fighting to expand his personal fiefdom. In practice, this meant her crew was more likely to survive this coming turmoil than the poor sods under, say, Zsinj’s command.

Still, after the fight for survival after Endor, it was painfully dull. She found herself stationed in orbit of Hemei IV, a wealthy industrial world on the very fringes of Sedriss’s territory, nominally part of the empire that Isard ran. Her cruiser was one of a few other ships that made up Hemei’s garrison, the flagship of which was an old Victory-class star destroyer, Splinter. Her captain is an insufferable Corellian named Tierce. All bluster and no guts.

Standing orders are to screen the planet from potential Remnant incursion but avoid serious confrontation. Once again, nominally allies, it was obvious even to a lowly captain like Alana, that Isard had no trust, or respect for Sedriss, so such a lightning strike were entirely possible.

Such was life now in what had once been the glorious imperial navy.

(2/3)
>>
The Splinter Task force wasn’t much on any order of battle. Two Strike-class cruisers including Scylla, the Victory-Class Splinter, and a lone Lancer-class. To the Imperials of the core, such a force was only fit to garrison a backwater, anything else was too valuable to risk, but you have heard rumors that in the Outer Rim, Grand Admiral Thrawn was using such forces to conduct daring raids on the rebels, anything had to be better than sitting and waiting.

As you pace the cramped bridge of Scylla, you hear a sudden trilling from the sensor station. The crewman sitting at the terminal glances at the readouts, preparing to confirm another freighter returned from the Deep Core to refill its hold with manufactured goods. Instead, his face drains of color and he works his mouth silently a second or two.

“Captain Tyrna,” he finally stammers.

You pace closer, irritated you must see for yourself what the trouble is. If it’s another burned out sensor you’ll- You now see the cause of the ensign’s alarm and feel panic growing in your own gut. Rebel ships are coming out of hyperspace as brilliant blue flashes at the edge of the system, you see a Nebulon-B and two CR-90 Corvettes as well as their complementary fighter squadrons in two, S-foils locking into attack position.
“Captain, it’s a rebel attack!” the ensign at the sensor console tells you unnecessarily.

“Get a hold of yourself, ensign,” you scold, eyes flicking from the console back to the newly emerged rebel fleet, “I see them.” You turn to survey your bridge crew and find most of them are staring through the viewport in shock and fear at the approaching fleet. “To your posts!” you snap, “Get me Captain Tierce,” you order the communications officer, “Now!”

There are a few confused minutes as the rebels get their bearings and begin advancing on the planet, perpendicular to your own position. They don’t seem interested in your cruiser, but rather on intimidating the planet directly.

You don’t have time to dwell on it, Captain Tierce appears before you in half-size hologram, his eyes wide with panic.

“Captain Tierce-,” You begin.

“We see them,” Tierce says, “Rebels he adds with a sneer. I want you to withdraw your cruiser out of Hemei’s gravity shadow and prepare to jump to hyperspace. We’re sending you the rendezvous coordinates.” Tierce swallows, “We can’t risk engaging that force, there is too much risk to our vessels.”

“This is exactly why we came here in warships and not bulk freighters!” You exclaim, unable to reign your outrage in. “We are facing a single frigate and some escorts, if we concentrate our forces-.”

“You have been given a direct order!” Tierce snaps back, “We don’t have the time to argue, and we don’t have the resources to waste on these scum. You will follow my orders and you will bring Scylla to the rendezvous point without delay!” He eyes flash fire even over the poor resolution hologram.

You feel the eyes of your crew on you as you are verbally berated by Captain Tierce.

At the very least, allow me to lead the vanguard of their attack. If it appears that the battle is truly hopeless, then I will at least buy you and the rest of the forces time to retreat.

You take a deep breath, even as in the back of your mind the timer is ticking down for the rebels to enter range to begin landing troops or bombarding planetary installations. You know Hemei has no great love of the empire or Sedriss, or at least they don’t love either more than they love safety, they will likely surrender at the first sign of trouble.

“Captain Tierce,” you begin again, “At the very least, allow me to try to stall them. If it appears that the battle is truly hopeless, then I will at least buy you and the rest of the forces time to retreat and return with overwhelming force.”

Tierce again opens his mouth to counter argue the point so you blurt out: “To give up this world without firing a single shot would be a blow against Imperial pride!”

Your words clearly find a mark and Tierce is left briefly shaken. “yes,” he says, “Of course, captain.” You see a wicked grin spread across his lips, “It may be necessary that some ships buy time for the others to withdraw.” He glances at a display out of view, “Take the Macabre,” he says referring to the Raider-class corvette, “And engage the Rebels at once. You are ordered to fight until you feel you’ve satisfied Imperial Pride.” He gives you a sadistic smile, “Tierce out.”

The hologram flickers and disappears. Beside you, the com officer reports that Tierce has cut the transmission, and the sensor operating confirms that Splinter and the other Strike-class are withdrawing at top speed.

This leaves you and Macabre against the rebel fleet.

This is a terribly convoluted head canon just to spice things up. Releiving Dark empire verbatim might be a little dull/not enough of a challenge, so I decided to throw some other road blocks in!

Your mind is working with possibilities, you try to quickly take all factors into account. Scyilla is designed primarily as an escort, it functioned best with a larger, more powerful ship to “escort” but with Tierce’s cowardice or overly strict interpretation of orders, you’ve been robbed of that. Scylla has as its primary hitting arm, several dozen turbolasers and a handful of ion cannons.
Strictly speaking, in a toe-to-toe fight, you would likely be able to take out that Nebulon B frigate which like your own ship was never designed to be a “ship of the line”. The real problem were the fighters.

It looks like the rebels brought in a full squadron’s worth, six X-wings and six Y-wings, hopelessly ancient by modern standards, but perfectly capable of sinking Scylla.

To counter them, you had Macabre’s guns, purpose built for “swatting flies” and your own fighters, 18 Tie/Ln fighters. It had never been intended that Scylla should engage enemy capital ships alone, so you lack and sort of bomber compliment.

Macabre lacks any fighter compliment or significant capital-grade firepower. Her weapons are speed and agility. On that thought . . .

“Get me Macabre on coms,” you say. Technicians quickly comply and another hologram springs up.

“Captain Tyrna,” an older man with a thick mustache smiles at you and gives a mock bow, “I’m glad to have the pleasure of meeting the officer I am going to die under.”

It’s not hard to see why someone his age is still commanding a lowly corvette. “Captain . . . “
“Tyvek,” he replies, “Of the Macabre, at your service.

“Captain Tyvek, follow us in. Under no circumstances allow those bombers to get close to us.”

“Scramble all fighters,” you order.

Minutes later you see the first flights of your Tie squadrons screaming by the bow of your ship, executing a holding pattern close by.

You notice hesitation on the part of the rebels before their entire fleet turns to meet you.

“Enemy vessels will be in firing range in minutes,” your tactical officer reports, you barely hear him, your thoughts are occupied running the math of this battle, you figure in order to claim the advantage, you’ll need to ventilate at least one of those blockade runners.

“Here they come!” the sensor officer cries.

You are so alarmed by the idea of your fighters leaving their screening positions you actually step over to the com officer and snatch his headset, “Under no circumstances are you to leave covering position for Scylla, is that clear?”

“Crystal, ma’am.”

You hand the headset back without ceremony, “Order Macabre to advance and deal with those fighters.” You pause and add, “but don’t get too far away.”

The Raider breaks formation, her drives flaring with light as she burns toward the enemy fighters which begin to spread into attack formation. You don’t have time to focus on that fight too much.
“Entering turbo laser range!” the tactical officer says, his words punctuated by the bellow of your turbolaser batteries, return fire scatters across Scylla’s shields, holding so far.

You point a finger as if it could actually make your command clearer, “Concentrate on the corvettes. I want to see dead hulks.”

“Yes ma’am!”

You spare a glance at the tactical display and see Macrabe spraying laser fire in all directions as she twists and turns. An enemy Y-Wing erupts into a fireball. These rebel fighter pilots seem to have overestimated their reputation although they do seem to be making an effort to withdraw to the cover of their mother ships, Tyvek isn’t giving them breathing room and is staying hot on their tails, simultaneously drawing further from your own protective umbrella.

“Have Tyvek return to formation,” you say, hands clasped behind your back, feeling a sense or control returning to you. You can sense that balance of the battle is shifting, leaving you with the initiative. “He’s done his job well.”

As your orders are relayed and Macabre turns about, you note with satisfaction that the Y-wings have been decimated, only a pair remain, screened by five X-wings. Alone, they should be easy pickings for your eighteen fresh and eager Ties.

“Shields on Corvette 2 failing,” your tactical officer says, “It’s withdrawing behind the Frigate.”

Your own shields are holding steady, being more than capable of surviving the paltry turbolaser fire the rebels are putting out, but you know at closer range they will be able to bring in more laser batteries which may whittle down your shields

We could send in the TIE's, but the EF-76 Nebulon-B was designed to protect convoys from exactly that kind of fighter raid. They'd get torn to shreds.

>Hold here and hammer their shields at long range.

We have the advantage. We'll whittle them down as much as we can. They know they cannot sustain a conflict like this. Their only options are to attempt to force a short-range engagement, in which case every joule of shields we bleed off them now will prove vital, or they'll wait for reinforcements, at which point we retreat.

They're playing our game now.

A predatory grin creeps across your lips, “We have them right where we want them. Intensify forward firepower.”

As Scylla draws power from her engines, redirecting it to her gun batteries, she slows to a crawl. This is the tipping point for the rebels, their entire task force springs into action, flying full speed toward the single, lowly Strike-class between them and the conquest of this planet.

“Starboard batteries, target that Corvette 2, maximum firepower,” the tactical officer says,

You can’t help but watch the brilliant emerald flash of your turbolasers lance out and strike the corvette head on. The beams shoot through its armor like it wasn’t there, warping the ship’s spine and sending a cascading explosion ripping through its hull.

Your crew actually cheers, many of them you know are less than willing conscripts from worlds with a non-positve outlook on the failing empire, This is likely their first taste of victory.

“Fighters incoming!” someone shouts.

They are no match for Macabre working in conjunction with your fully intact fighter guard. You loose a handful of ties in the process of destroying the last Y-wing and another pair of X-wings, but that’s expected any time combat is involved with Ties.

“Captain, the rebels are drawing off!” Tactical reports.

You can see it yourself, the last corvette attempting to draw fire from the Frigate as they both bank hard away, trying to escape.

Your Tie fighters are buzzing around the frigate no like flies on carrion, occasionally a red beam will lance out and strike one, or drive them off, but there are too many, and the frigate is clearly overwhelmed. Then you see it, escape pods. Blood in the water.

“Have our storm troopers stand by for boarding action. And have Tyvek and our fighters chase down that corvette”

Before the order can be given a crew member calls out: “Energy spikes within the frigate,” Sensors reports. “They’re scuttling the ship, ma’am.” Beside him, the tractor beam operator is quickly scooping up any escape pods he can.

Beyond the dying frigate, you see Macabre and your surviving fighters racing toward the corvette, trading pot shots at long range. As the corvette nears the hyper limit, you see a telltale flash of fire and its engine bank flickers and dies
“Captain Tyvek reports the enemy reactor has been damaged and shut down.”

A sudden explosion on the Nebulon’s spine breaks the ship in two, the engine section rapidly catching up with the bow-section, clashing and rebounding from one another in a spray of debris.

“No targets on scope,” the tactical officer says, sounding almost bewildered.

Which is probably why it was here in the first place.

Moff Arvendis,” you begin, clasping your hands behind your back and lengthening your spine, “I would like to report to you directly the victory won here today at Hemei IV. Three rebel capital ships destroyed, one stricken and captured, we’re still counting final prisoner numbers sir, but it looks to be over one hundred. Our losses amount to a handful of Tie Fighters.”
The elderly moff blinks his surprise, obvious even through the hologram, “I wasn’t aware of any attack on Hemei, uh . . . “ he looks around you, “And where is Captain Tierce?”

You feel a smile coming on, “Captain Tierce feared for the safety of his cruiser, sir, and withdrew to sfety, leaving me and captain Tyvek of Macabre to face the enemy.”

Arvendis’s expression changes from bewilderment to contempt. “Alone?” he asked.

“Yes sir.”

“Well captain. I must commend you for your exemplary performance. I will dispatch reinforcements from Ebaq at once. Well done,” The moff says.

“Thank you sir,” you beam, “Now if you please, I will contact Captain Tierce and inform him of my victory as well.”

“Captain,” Arvendis cuts in, “There’s no need. I think you might tell Tierce in person when he returns to Hemei for you to assume command of Splinter and the task force. Arvendis out.”

As the hologram fades away, you feel like you did when you saw the frigates escape pods. Blood is in the air, and you’re going to come out on top.

Story so far:

Dark Empire Quest is set in an alternate version of Star Wars where many of the main story liens occur concurrently rather than separately. Ysanne Isard’s desperate struggle to hold together the remnants of the Empire, Zsinj’s greedy and selfish establishment of a personal fiefdom, Thrawn’s campaign to rebuild the Empire, with himself at the helm, and of course, the resurrection of Emperor Palpatine in the Deep Core.

We play as two characters, the first being Darth Sidious himself, reborn in a younger clone body and eager to reforge his empire. The second being a young Imperial captain named Alana Tyrna as she fights on the front lines and works her way up the rank ladder.

Through these two characters we will make decisions that shape their fates and, ultimately, the fate of the galaxy at large.

Will darkness rise anew from the Deep core of the galaxy? Will the Empire once again lord over its enemies? Join us and find out in Dark Empire Quest.

A few months have passed since you sent out your command to Mara Jade to return to you. With each passing day, you have felt her grow closer, drawing nearer to your throne world. But the business of the Empire has not rested while you wait. The orbital shipyards of Byss and Foerost continue to work full bore, driving an insatiable appetite for raw materials. A fourth battle fleet of star destroyers and escorts is being assembled presently.

And of course, there is the matter of your Grand Vizier, Sate Pestage who is charged by Sedriss with spectacularly failing in your absence to keep the empire intact. Torn with conflicting decisions to execute him for his incompetence or to forgive and reutilize your longtime ally, you instead had him placed into one of the many dungeons beneath your citadel.

Sate Pestage could be useful once again as the Grand Vizier to run the day-to-day operations of your empire as he has in the past. Although, he has also proven himself quite incapable of independent leadership. Once You have decided Pestage’s fate you’ll still have to determine who, Pestage included, should resume the title of Grand Vizier.

Pestage has been your loyal follower since when you were a mere senator from a back water world. He has been a close supporter since the very beginning.

You sign the execution order without remorse. Progress necessitates sacrifice. His body will be one more among billions that make up the foundation of your empire.

With Pestage’s fate decided, it now falls to you to decide who the title of Grand Vizier will fall to. The Grand Vizier is the executive head of the Empire, leaving you free to focus on specific issues rather than the maintenance of the empire as a whole, though they must still answer to you. You feel a strong temptation to simply usurp this power yourself, which of course is entirely within the realm of possibility, though to run the imperial government yourself would either greatly diminish the time you have to spend on special projects, or would greatly hinder your ability to govern efficiently. Or both.

Traditionally, you have favored unimaginative bureaucrats as Viziers after all, ambition in an underling can be a dangerous thing. But you feel you are more than capable of channeling and controlling her ambition. Unfortunately, you don’t have the opportunity to offer her the position quite yet. In thr mean time, you suspect the bureaucracy of the Deep Core can support itself for now.

There is also the question of the disposition of your fleet, or the Imperial Military in general.

Cooped up in Deep Core, your resources aren't unlimited, so how do you wish to spend what you have?

>Focus on production of conventional forces, we will need many more for the coming war (Storm troopers, Star Destroyers, Tie Fighters etc)

while the super weapons are great they take a crap ton of resources and practically cripple us when some hick farmer throws a rock hard enough to blow it to hell and back. I feel that right now we'd be better growing our army to extend our reach first and then when we get our hands on more resources then we can build the super weapons when we have a bit more of a safety net.
>>
>>1381591
Clearly, the forces we already had were insufficient for our purposes. An entire legion of our finest troops were unable to hold the Endor moon, and our fleet fell apart without us.

However, every time we have attempted to make a superweapon, it has failed. Both methods have proven unsatisfactory.

However, Tarkin was right. We need a symbol of the Empire's power. Something terrifying.

>BOTH.

We will put our technology (and sorcery) into improving our conventional forces. We will also utilize more brutal training methods in order to improve the troops we have. We must make our military terrifying.

>We will find an advantage through the research and development of brand new, experimental weapons of war.

The tide is now turned, and it is we who are at a quantitative disadvantage.

While it is clear that our past singular focus on single platform strategic weapons was in error, there would be great utility in producing new lines of conventional and unconventional systems, ones that can exploit shock and the psyche of our enemies.

Terror can still be a powerful force. New war machines would throw years of Republic tactics and strategies in disarray and if used correctly could be used to divide the systems of the fledgling Republic with the proper fielding of these weapons.

You guys have convinced me. So long as we are able to mass-produce whatever weapons we come up with.

Nothing will demoralize the enemy more than the knowledge that even if they manage to take out one of our new weapons of war, a dozen more will take their place.

The traitors will learn that any effort to stand in the way of my rule is futile.

Changing my vote.
>>
>>1381641
In that case, we need to determine what our current situation is. Our order of battle should be slaved to our strategy.

To that end we need to determine our immediate goals.

Do we go for uniting the Remnants, attack Republic territories, conduct mass raids for raw materials? These are important questions we need to consider then.
>>

With those major decisions handled, you finally have a free moment to review the briefing on the other political entities of the galaxy that Sedriss has collected.

As it stands, there are four major power groups aside from your own, most of whom are successor states to your Galactic Empire.
http://www.swgalaxymap.com/

Zsinj's Empire - centered roughly between Dathomir and Felucia and extending into the outer rim. Zsinj appears to be isolationist in outlook, only concerned with his own territory and little else.

Thrawn's Empire - Spanning between Taris and Pantolomin, Thrawn is locked in a three way struggle for dominance against Zsinj to his galactic east and Isard' Imperial remnant to the south. While Thrawn is likely to be your most serious military threat, he isn't your closest, and at present seems to be covering his forces from a series of battles to drive back the New Republic.

New Republic - The ultimate form of the Rebel Alliance, they control a huge swath of space from Mon Calamari to Mechis III, with scattered pockets of support elsewhere. Tenacious, dangerous foes, they seem to be suffering growing pains as their lightning expansion has halted, and in many places been driven back

Isard's Remnant - Your closest neighbor and perhaps the most "legitimate" claimant to your empire. You have learned the most about the Remnant so far simply by proximity and association.

Isard's Remnants - (cont.) coiled like a serpent around the galactic core, Isard's faction has a strong possibility of holding out against all enemies and is in possession of many vital worlds including the former capital world of Corusscant.

They hold a scattering of other territories further to the galactic south.

Isard's remnant, form what you have gathered, is a precarious coalition of various imperial warlords all under the cunning leadership of Yssane Isard, your former Director of Intelligence. It is likely only through intrigue and subterfuge that Isard has held her shaky alliance together. As far as she is aware, your own forces make up one small part of that faction which she thinks to be a small garrison force under Sedriss.

Until the threat of Thrawn appeared, the remnant was the primary target of the New Republic and has suffered dearly at their hands. Thrawn and Isard both consider the other a pretender to the throne, and that they alone hold a legitimate claim.

(2/3)
>>
If you are to reclaim your old seat of power, Isard's faction must be the first brought into line. Currently, two military plans exist to deal with her through brute force. Operation Nexu, an attack or Corellia, and Darklight, an attack on Coruscant itself. Sooner or later, You'll have to make a decision on how to proceed sooner or later. You have also given thought to

>We will prepare for Operation Nexu
>We will prepare for Operation Darklight
>I will contact Isard and reveal myself
>I will reveal myself to the galaxy
>There is yet more preparation to do
>More questions about . . .

quick question, which plan was the direct attack on coruscant and which on was to grab a foot hold first?

Because honestly I'd prefer to get some of our new toys first and attack Coruscant head on to not only show the galaxy our power but to also show off our newest toys to help show the galaxy that this old dog can still learn some very nasty new tricks.
>>
>>1381887
Darklight is a direct, surprise attack on Coruscant, Nexu is a smaller scale attack on Corellia to gain a foot hold in the core worlds.
>>
>>1381872
>>More questions about . . .
1. What are our Isard's Intelligence capabilities

2. Is Operation Darklight a deprecatory strike?

I'm trying to think whether or not we can afford attacking, holding and exploiting Corellia in contrast to a sudden and brutal attempt at undermining Isard's legitimacy in the eyes of her underlings.

Maybe I'm illiterate but i dont know what you mean. Darklight's goal is to quash Coeuscant into submission through a combination of rapid military attack and then revealing your identity to the population, cowing then into surrender. Alternatives include orbital bombardment or prolonged siege.
>>
>>1381902
Problem is, this wouldn't reveal us to JUST Isard. I'm sure the other factions have spies in her territory. If we play our hand, everyone will have plenty of warning about us.

We gotta be sneeki.
>>
>>1381910
well if we want to save that surprise for later we could just pretend our soon to be apprentice is the new head and only reveal ourselves to the warlords we have beaten to make sure they don't get any funny ideas later down the line.

Can we hold Coruscant? Can we ensure and protect the lines of communication that will sustain its populace?

I say we commence Operation Darklight, orbitally bombard key C3 nodes and installations symbolic to Isard's regime.

With her failure to defend coruscant or to forsee our attack, we shake the foundation of her power base.

>>1381924
It will take some convincing that we ourselves are not a deception.

Would a force choke from Byss to the Lusankya be enough proof for Isard?

Coruscants biggest shortfall is of course food for its stupid huge population. You currently control two of its major bread basket worlds. Ruan and Salliche.

Before we actually do the attack, contact Isard. If she refuses to be recruited, start the attack.
>>
>>1381975
well we're not really a clone per say. We are the original emperor just overpowering a new body that happened to be a clone of us. Whatever this clone was is dead and gone, all that is left is the emperor.

>>1381989
>Begin preparations to launch a surprise attack on Corsucant
build the force up first, then we can call her and try to recruit her. That way if she turns us down we can attack her immediately before she can prepare any type of defense
>>
>>1381969
>>1381975

It would only be temporary, but that kind of operation would have been better handled with trained Sith.

>>1381989
Thank You TK-0WL

As much as it open us to the vulnerabilities of early detection, I have to go with
>Begin preparations to launch a surprise attack on Corsucant

I don't feel Isard is the kowtowing type, UNLESS we could have the Emperor contact Isard mere minutes before our assault arrives to really drive the point home.

And make sure the record button is on the holonet transceiver.
>>
>>1381989
>Attempt to recruit Isard.

If we can get her to come willingly, it will preserve a lot of her firepower for use against our true enemies.

And we're fucking Sheev. Manipulating and convincing people to do what we want is our forte. We can totally do it.
>>
>>1382007
I'm up for this as well.
>>
So it looks like consensus is begin preparations to attack Coruscant but make a small allowance to appeal directly to Isard. Preparations will begin at once, but it will take time to be ready to execute.

>Writing
>>
Work begins at once for the attack on Coruscant. As written, the plan relies of fear driving the population of Coruscant to surrender. Many details remain to be worked out, but that will be a problem for another day

Now that a lot of prep work has been completed and you have set up a few primary focuses of your government, I want to briefly open the forum for open discussion, if there are any burning questions or brilliant ideas that must be heard, now is the time. Feel free to write in to discuss, or if you have nothing, continue.

My primary concern is time. We are preparing for an attack on the most symbolically important world in the galaxy currently held by the Empire's former spymaster. The operation's reliance on initial surprise troubles me.

Stepping aside that concern, since we desire to contact Isard at some point during this process, I feel that it should take place during or immediately before the strike commences. Contact without a strike or show of force, or contact that we cannot exploit for propaganda purposes would simply identify us as an internal threat and the only real one that could dislodge her from her cozy core.

btw, thank you TK-0WL for this quest.

>The operation's reliance on initial surprise troubles me.

Speaking realistically, if Isard has an inkling of how much danger Coruscant is in, you could never take it from here with brute military force, not with it even remotely intact.

The fact is, ad her nominal allies, Isard likely isnt expecting a main thrust from the deep core. Her attention is presumably focused outward.

Coruscants garrison is estimated at five or six SDs and some orbital forts, you can drop twelve SDs three SSDs and escorts on them at the virtual drop of a hat. It shouldnt be TOO difficult.

>Continue

>>1382052
Thought it may be slightly premature given our preparations for Coruscant, I believe we must think of the step beyond this one. Whether she falls or joins the fold, Isard's followers will most likely bend to our will once things begin to proceed.

We must then look at the other threats: The New Republic, Thrawn, and Zsinj. Of the three of them I believe Zsinj should be our second target. With his style of leadership I'd imagine that most of his major followers do so out of no real loyalty to Zsinj himself but instead out of more selfish desires.

We must convince them that it would be in their best interest to either directly turn against the warlord or at the very least turn a blind eye to our efforts to bring him down. There's a bed of Imperial support there that will be vital if we want to take on Thrawn or the New Republic.

Though I must admit I do see the possibility that Thrawn and the NR might put aside their differences to stand against us.

Thoughts?
>>
>>1382122
Depending on how TK would handle Thrawn, I think he'd see the logic in siding with us over the NR since we'd present a united front against the Vong invasion.

Could be wrong about him and Palpatine knowing of their arrival in advance, but the Chiss definitely know who the Vong are at least.
>>
>>1382113
I think you're a sick bastard! Perfect!

Things like thare are doable, but it would be a daunting task for your inexperienced sorcerers and time consuming for you yourself.

>>1382122
>I believe Zsinj should be our second target
Unfortunatelt, Zsinj is "geographically" thr most difficult to reach from either the Dark Empire or Isard's turf.
>>
I thought Thrawn was fiercely loyal to the Emperor.
>>
>>1382134
To be honest, i haven't given the impending vong invasion any thought and I dont know if it will be a thing in this universe or if it will ever be a factor.

As for Thrawn, i have some ideas for him, but it depends a lot on some of your actions and choices :D

Also can I say how much typing on a phone sucks?
>>
>>1382150
Thrawn is fiercly loyal to the idea of the empire is my understanding. He understands WHAT the emperor is and sees him as necessary, I dont know about any personal loyalty. Thrawn's always struck me as pretty cold blooded and logical.
>>
>>1382137
That's a fair point I hadn't thought of

>>1382134
>>1382150
Again it comes down to how TK plays Thrawn. This does seem to have a fair mix of Legends and Nu-Canon stuff at times (which I love). I agree that Thrawn is a practical guy who sees the Vong as a greater threat but at the same time I don't know how down he'd be with our Sith Alchemy shenanigans, especially if he's got his own more Chiss-like/"secular" Empire, he may not want us.
>>
>>1382122
>Thrawn and the NR
I 100% share this concern with you. In the future we must avoid a situation where the Republic and Thrawn join together against us unless it is in a way that furthers our own ends.

Zsinj can still be in play however if we can craft a situation where he is a threat to Thrawn and/or the Republic, but that is cloak and dagger foolery for down the road.

>>1382163
What I fear concerning Thrawn is the likelihood of him producing anti-force weapons or capabilities, especially since our forces going forward will be reliant upon them. It is something we will need to anticipate.
>>
>>1382163
>This does seem to have a fair mix of Legends and Nu-Canon stuff at times (which I love)

Im glad! I'm honestly just playing out my childhood head cannon and throwing in some of the newer stuff. Dark Empire always stuck with me for some resson as a wasted oppurtunity. I want is to redeem it :D

At long last, the awaited moment has arrived. You felt Mara's presence as the assault shuttle ferrying her down from orbit entered Byss's atmosphere, close and burning white-hot through the force. You sense anger, fear, trepidation all boiling and mixing within her. Jade had long served you as the Emperor's hand, but now you have chosen her to become your apprentice. Your replacement for the loss of Vader.

You wait like a spider in the center of its web as she is brought to the top of your citadel spire, the doors hissing open and a mixed contingent of Royal Guards, Death Troopers, and a pair of Dark Jedi led by Sedriss all enter, flanking and surrounding Mara.

The escort stops at the door, an awkward jostling of rank, position and privilege. Only Sedriss approaches with Mara, the two other darksiders kneeling behind him

"Master, the Emperor's Hand has returned to us as you have forseen," Sedriss says.

"Leave us," you command, hardly noting the procession of soldiers and guards file out, followed by Sedriss and his two Darksiders.

Mara takes a knee on the floor, looking up in cautious awe at you where you sit.

"Master," she says, "What's happened to you? I felt . . . " she pauses to collect herself, "I felt you die at Endor."

You sneer at Mara before standing from your throne. "Have you forgotten the power I wield?" You ask, "You believe that death is an obstacle I cannot overcome?" In your old body, you would have cackled, but in this younger form you give a full bodied laugh. "How little you know of the force."

"I know what you've taught me, master," she protests.

"And I have much more left to teach you," you say as you descend the stairs to her. "If you feel worthy of becoming my apprentice."

Mara lets her mask of calm slip and you see as well as feel her surprise. "Of course I will take any challenge you put before me, master."

"A willingness to try is not the only requirement to become a sith," you scoff. "It requires focus, discipline and sacrifice."

"Yes, master."

You over saw Mara's training personally in the past and know her combat prowess is virtually unmatched, it is her skill in the realm of the force you are concerned about. She has the gift, but not nearly as much raw talent as Anakin did when you turned him.

With your commitment to train a cabal of Dark Side Mages, you cant commit much time to her personal development, but you can delegate her first steps to your subordinates.

"Obviously you are not ready to begin learning the depths of power the Dark Side can offer. Instead, I would like you to work with Executor Sedriss-"

"Sedriss?" Mara asks, her lip curled in distaste. It was clear she didn't think very highly of the former mercenary, which was fine by you.

"He and the Dark Side Elite will train you as one of their number. You will learn advanced light saber techniques that will prove useful to you." You turn away from her, "And may do something to improve your concentration."

"He, is my murderer, Mara!" You pause and compose yourself, "And you let him live. Let him get away with his crime, his betrayal."

You can feel waves of shame and rage rolling off of her as she struggles for words, "Master, if you give me a second chance, I . . .I could . . ." She trails off at the uselessness of her words.

She stops, "Yes, master?"

"Be sure you do not fail me again."

"I wont," she replies, her voice as cold as ice.

A grin creeps across your face as the throne room doors hiss closed. Perhaps you'd underestimated Mara. After some sparring lessons with Sedriss and his elite, perhaps she will be ready for you to train as your own. You rotate the throne to look back at your capital, distantly the strange aqua-colored sun of Byss is setting, casting a blue-green glow over everything in your citadel. These were the first steps of what was shaping up to be a triumphant return. Alone with your thoughts and visions of the future, titanic clashes of weapons in space and a deadly clash of sabers, you can't help but laugh.

Just got free!

Welcome back to Dark Empire Quest where we will attempt to reconquer a rebellious and fractured government for the empire. Previously we guided Palpatine's choices to shape his empire, and began Mara Jade's training so that she may become your new apprentice to replace the vanquished Darth Vader.

In this session, we return to Captain Alana Tyrna of the Imperial navy. In case you are unaware, I'm travelling today and tomorrow so responses may be very intermittent. I'll allow about ten to fifteen minutes for voting typically.

I'll also take the opportunity to introduce:

For keeping track of when the game is starting.

Now, let's get started!

(1/4)
>>
Last we were with you (Alana), you were captain of a mere Strike-class medium cruiser, a particularly mundane assignment, one you were likely destined to stay with. That is, until a chance encounter with a small rebel strike force that, thanks to incompetence on your commanding officer's part, you were forced to fight virtually alone.

You emerged victorious, and with all the spoils that victory brings. The sector Moff intervened directly in your career and replaced Captain Pierce with you, giving you command of his flagship, the Victory II-Class Star Destroyer: Splinter. And with it, command over the whole task force: Two strike-Class cruisers, your former command Scylla and Praetor, as well as the rough-and-tumble Captain Tyvek of the Raider-Class Corvette Macabre.

Strictly speaking, the aforementioned "captains" were Captain in title only and not rank. Tyvek only musters a measly "lieutenant" while Tierce was in fact a Lieutenant Commander, a rank you cant help but notice that Moff Arvendis did not grant you to go along with your expanded responsibilities.

It was no secret within the Empire than anti-Xeno anti-female prejudice permeated nearly the entire structure. Of course, after Endor, and after the "Withdrawal" to the Core and Outer Rim, the Empire was desperate for warm bodies. In Palpatine's former empire, humans, even females, always came before "the lesser races" and such was the case even now.

You didn’t know Moff Arvendis well enough to decide if your lack of promotion was an intentional slight, an oversight, or an effort to stall or sabotage your career. No matter, you wouldn't let such a small thing stop you. For now, you were pleased to have made it this far. Victory-class ships were old and less capable than the more iconic Imperial -Class Star Destroyers it was true, but they could frequently be used as a spring board to bigger and better things.

But, no matter what the future held for you, you were constrained in the present. Your meeting with Tierce after the Battle of Hemei IV was every bit as sweet as you had hoped. Tierce was a blowhard with family connections on Corellia and in the Imperial navy, not that either of those counted for much anymore. The red-faced rage Tierce barely contained as you relieved him of command was all you could have hoped for. He was being transferred to command the Hemei starport garrison and, you hoped, would never see a combat command again.

It was all you could do not to laugh madly about it as you rode one of your new Lamda-class shuttles to Splinter, your new command. In virtually every way, a Victory II-Class was a paired down Imperial-Class, approximately twice the fire power of a Strike-class with a compliment of twenty four Tie/Ln fighters, two complete squadrons.

Your official reception on Splinter as its new commanding officer is handled with the utmost professionalism. You tour the ship at the guidance of its Executive Officer, Lieutenant Felmar as he introduces you to each of the section chiefs and its squadron commanders. It doesn't take you long to realize what you took for professionalism is a thin guise for an extremely frosty reception. You catch a scowl from thr Chief engineer, the tactical officer emphasizes his name when he introduces himself as Lieutenant Roth Tierce. The officers of Splinter seem to be rather fond of their former commander, and it's quite obvious they blame you for his departure.

A rebellious staff could prove difficult for you to handle, but on the other side of the credit, pressing them into line might breed more resentment.

We cannot allow dissent aboard a front-line vessel. Not if we're expecting more combat - and believe me, the Rebels are far too stubborn to give up after a single scouting run. They'll be back.

>You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. We will make an effort to win their admiration.

I think we should just be honest with them. Sit the command staff down and debrief them on the last battle, (including the actual size of the enemy force) and that they're likely to send more. We understand they have no reason to like us, but we have to present a united front to the enemy.

However, we make it clear this is not a suggestion. We can be pleasant company, but if we are crossed, we will show that

Basically, the carrot in one hand, the stick in the other.

There's no room for dissent in the the Empire that is to be reborn. If they can't put aside their pettiness then it'll get Imperial servants killed in combat. We need to make it abundantly clear that this won't be tolerated.

I could support this. We can be fair while letting them know if they show any lack of respect or obedience they will wind up on the wrong side of imperial discipline. And we will keep that threat.

At the same time, we also want a competent officer corps that will be able to professionally disagree with us and offer their opinions as long as we act as one in battle.

After your initial meetings with the section chiefs, you make an effort to instill in them your belief in the crew and your belief in thr mission.

That girl.

The words burn in your heart. On Byss you could have never imagined such insolence, such disrespect. Even after you showed them compassion. You will make him an example for the others.

HOWEVER, we do not want his men turning against us for punishing them for something he did. We will confront him and his squadron personally, and make it VERY CLEAR why they are performing extra duties. We want to turn them against HIM, not US.

Furthermore, we will monitor their performance more carefully. We'll see how competent this loudmouth is, how well his squadron performs, and if anyone is suitable to replace him.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our new squadron.

"Lieutenant Vells," you say, surveying thr squadron commander and his collected pilots who stand in a razor straight line on Splinter's flight deck, idling Tie fighters behind them. "I've gathered your team here because it has come to my attention that you feel running additional drills aren't needed for your squadron."

As you speak, Vells' face blanches, his fingers tightening on the flight helmet he holds under his arm. "Ma'am, I-"

"I don’t recall authorizing you to reply," you say coldly.

Vells' jaw snaps shut.

"I want you to remember that this 'girl' is a fair sight more competent than your previous commander. Drills will save your life. Don't criticize my orders again. You will run squadron scramble until you can get your entire team in the air in under five minutes. Once your squadron proves they are as good as you think, you can stop."

Vells stares rigidly ahead for a full second before speaking. "Understood, ma'am."

"Then get to it." You don’t look back as you leave, Vells pulling on his helmet and calling to his squadron mates as they sprint for their fighters.

"Captain Tyrna," Your executive officer, Lieutenant Felmar stands in the doorway to your office while you read over various readiness reports and readouts on system freight traffic.

Physiologists should think twice before positioning the drive for self-preservation as the cardinal drive of an organic being. Above all, a living thing wants to discharge its strength — life itself is will to power - self-preservation is only one of the indirect and most frequent consequences of this.

Okay, I had a few thoughts and did some reading, and I realized that I was too generous to Sedriss when I called him a fucking mook. The dude demoted Maxamillian Veers, the guy who led the Hoth ground assault, to captain and sent him on a suicide mission entirely because he didn't like him. The entire Dark side elite are basically a bunch of largely interchangeable dark jedi who get killed in droves during the story in return for killing 2 or three jedi.

Clearly, we need to do better, which is where my proposal comes in:
Step 1: Consolidate almost all of the force adepts we have into three organizations: The Shadow Magi, Blackguards, and Inquistorious.
The Shadow Mages are in charge of weird shit like sith alchemy and prophesy. They are lead by the Archmage. They are not trained in direct combat.

The Blackguard are our lightsaber wielding fanatics who go around stabbing people. Basically like knockoff Mauls, except not trained in actual sith lore. Most of the so called dark side elite will end up in here. They are lead by Sedriss, although if we succeed in turning the Jensaarai to the dark side, their leader might end up in charge.

Inquistorious are pretty much like in canon, they do intel stuff and go around searching for jedi to kill and small children to abduct. They're led by the Grand inquisitor and there are a ton of candidates for that position in the EU. Zinji actually has one in his employ, and she might do... assuming she proves her loyalty in a sufficiently spectacular fashion of course.

Finally, there's the Emperor's hand. Its exactly what it is in canon, an elite agent that answers only to us. Since Mara Jade has been promoted, there's an opening though I'm not sure who to give the job.

Your executive officer carries out his sentence without incident, and true to his prediction, receives permission to transfer off your ship. Also, we need to do what we can to see that Captain Tyvek gets due credit and promotions/awards for his service. He was everything Felmar and Tierce weren't.

If he accepts the offer. He has his own ship right now and may not wish to give that authority up. While we could order him to be our XO, that's not a way to endear loyalty.

Lieutenant Vells has proved nothing other than that he has better discipline than an officer who called us a bitch to our face. That doesn't speak too highly of him.

The other options are pretty generic and don't really speak to me, at least in terms of long term second in command. Felmar could be a good XO if he learns to be professional and respectful since he has already shown loyalty and courage of speaking truth to power, but I am concerned he has so damaged his brand with this outburst he may not be able to recover.

>>
>>1385705
Here's my ideas so far on what to do with each option.

>XO - A promising Line Officer from Splinter.
>Tyvek - Let's see if we can get him a bigger command. If not, at the very least a promotion.
>Vells - Hold him to the same standard we held him to with drills. Same for his squadron. See if we can requisition better fighters in order to match their improved performance.

NOTE: The Rebels have Rogue Squadron. Thrawn and Zsinj both have their versions of the 181st. Isard has her Thyferran Guard. We don't currently have any elite squadrons to match them.

I suggest we see how well Vells' squadron can shape up. Keep drilling them, hold them to high standards, and then start holding other squadron's in our task force to theirs.

The problem with promoting a officer of a different ship is that it might damage the crew actions both in our current crew as well as the other ships crew.

I believe the ideal fighter complement for a Vic-II is a squadron of Interceptors and another as TIE Bombers.

The TIE/sa is one of the most versatile craft in the entire Imperial navy. Depending on its loadout, it can be used as a bomber, a mobile anti-fighter SAM, a boarding vessel, a shuttle, almost anything.

Honestly, I'd rather a TIE/sa over the Assault Gunboat, for a couple of reasons.

>Hangar footprint.
The Assault Gunboat is much larger than the TIE Bomber, and takes up a lot more vertical space in a hangar. To fit a squadron, we'd likely need to strip out more things, like shuttles, boarding craft, or ground troops.

>Versatility.
A TIE/sa bomber is modular. With minimal refits, it can (and does) function as an electronic warfare craft, as a shuttle, and as a boarding craft. This means that, if we really wanted to, we could strip out our existing Lambda-class shuttles, replace those with bombers and still maintain transport and boarding capability.

>Maintenance/cost.
Shields and hyperdrives are amazing, it's true. It really is. But they're expensive and difficult to maintain. Furthermore, we'd need to re-train our techs to handle the new (and obscure) craft. This would lengthen supply requirements and increase hangar time for our craft.

For these reasons, I'd go with TIE/sa bombers for now.

And that's why I said we could make way for extra space by removing the Stormtrooper contingent and its vehicles, dedicating our Victory into for pure Space-Superiority by carrying a larger starfighter wing.
>>
>>1385852
True, but with the space required for a squadron of Assault Gunboats, you could likely squeeze in two TIE Squadrons. If you're going to expand the hangar, you could absolutely fit in a fighter group.

Say, two TIE Interceptor squadrons and a TIE Bomber squadron?
>>
>>1385860
I already said we may get Gunboats only when we get a higher rank and command since they won't allocate limited reserves and resources to a lowly captain with a garrison fleet.

And even then, craft like them shouldn't be wasted on recruits or the unexceptional. We should reserve them for Aces and their wingmen.
>>
>>1385860
And one more thing, are we gonna reduce the Stormtrooper contingent on the Splinter for more fighters or keep them where they are?
>>
>>1385865
I agree that when we get the influence to do so, we should absolutely attempt to turn our fighter complement into an elite unit, with craft to match. A fighter group is a pretty ideal set-up for such a thing, gives us more versatility than a squadron but higher standards than a wing.

Seems that as far as 'elite' craft go, the two main Imperial contractors are Sienar and Cygnus Spaceworks. Sienar has the TIE Advanced line, culminating with the Defender, and Cygnus has the Assault Gunboat and Missile Boat. Might be worth, down the line, worth offering contracts for our fighter complement and seeing what the companies offer.

I'm personally a Sienar fanboy, but I do have an appreciation for Cygnus.

>>1385867
I have a feeling we will need our Stormtroopers somewhere down the line, even if only to repel boarders. I'd instead cut down on either our armoured vehicles (do we REALLY need 10 AT-AT's or our shuttlecraft to make room for the TIE Bombers).
>>
>>1385880
The Fleet of vehicles definitely need to go if we aren't gonna invade planets anytime soon, but 1600 stormies for a single 900m long ship solely for defense and boarding action seems a bit too many, I'd personally reduce it to a thousand or 500 at minimum.

After the situation with Felmar, you decided to shape up your command situation a bit. First, you needed to fill the command station on Scylla. Captain Tyvek of thr Raider, Macabre was your most obvious choice. You offered him the role after seeing off Felmar's shuttle.

"I would love to," he replied, "Macabre is a good ship, but she's a death trap. Besides, Scylla worked well for you, maybe one day I'll take your job too."

With Scylla captained, you focus on the problem of choosing an XO. You felt it was important to show the crew of Splinter that you weren't on a witch hunt and decided to promote within. After a brief hunt through commendations and efficiency reports, you come upon a rather surprising discovery.

"Lieutenant Jessary Zepal, ma'am," she says.

"Lieutenant Zepal," you repeat, studying the woman who stands across from you. Short for a naval officer, she looks as puzzled to be here as you were to find her. "Your record as a gunnery officer is outstanding. You transferred . . ."

"From Sabre, ma'am."

"That's a Lancer-Class Frigate?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Well from what I'm seeing, your gun crews report both higher efficiency and better accuracy than average. What do you attribute that to?"

"My anti-star fighter background," she says without hesitation.

You remain silent, inviting her to elaborate. "Most capital gunners I've met rely on saturation fire, thr law of averages, put enough shots downrange and you'll hit something. They treat thr guns like factory equipment. Contrary to popular perception, anti-star fighter gunnery requires speed, accuracy and precision. A ships guns are fine-tuned machines and need constant attention."

"You have high commendations from your superiors, your section outperforms the baseline, why is it you have never been considered for a command role?"

Lieutenant Zepal hesitates, her eyes flicking back and forth as she thinks, "I've been told I don’t have a strong command presence, ma'am. And I've always been under the impression that I have been effected by anti-female bias."

The thing is, we have no idea if we're going to be invading anything anytime soon or not. We command a Star Destroyer, and even an old model like a Victory-II is expected to be able to take and hold a planet (though a backwater, in the case of a Vic-II).

Furthermore, our vessel is the only one in our fleet capable of really carrying troops in numbers. That puts the responsibility on us if any ground action is to occur.

And it well might. Orders can change at anytime. For all we know, a reprisal attack against the Rebels might come down from the chain of command, or an uprising on the planet below.

We will certainly keep her in mind, but we cannot make a decision until we know all our options.

Personally, I think the perfect place for her would be on the Macabre. Perhaps we could promote the Macabre's XO to captain of that ship, and make her XO of the Macabre?

Possibly recommend Zepal for the XO slot to whoever Macabre's new skipper winds up being.
>>
>>1385902
Fair point, waiting for troop transports to arrive from friendly turf after clearing an enemy planet's orbital defenses sounds like a great way to get our assess whooped by a counter-attack.

So I guess we'll need a dedicated carrier if we're going to expand/focus on fighter superiority. Not that hard since a heavy freighter would do in a pinch.
>>
>>1385918
Recommend, but I'd advise against forcing it on them. Let a skipper pick their own XO, because while they fall under us, at the end of the day, it's their boat.

Consider grabbing a Quasar Fire, perhaps?

Or a Kuat freighter, which are practically everywhere. And besides, Quasar Fires are NR ships, unless we paint an Imperial Navy Roundel on top of our own QF; a friendly fire incident could happen.

As an XO she'd have more ability to shape the gunnery to the standards her group has but I'd like to see more candidates. Maybe keep her in mind.

The Vic-II has five Lambda-Class shuttles on the roster. A Lambda-class shuttle has the hangar footprint of three TIE/sa bombers.

A TIE/sa bomber with the ordnance stripped out can carry 12 stormtroopers. A Lambda shuttle can carry approximately twice that. And cannot board enemy craft that don't have a hangar bay. (A bomber can, in the /br configuration).

We swap out four shuttles, increase the size of our TIE racks, and we've just doubled our troop transport capability, and if not in use for transport, our transports can now carry a LOT of ordnance. And we've still got a Lambda-class for official visits and the like.

There's also 10(!) Clone Wars Juggernauts in storage. Why we'd need those when we have twice as many AT-ATs as Veers needed to take Hoth, I have no idea. Ditch those, move our ground vehicles around, and we've got room for another squadron of TIE Bombers, easily.

We now have multiplied our Stormtrooper carrying capacity by a huge degree, and have added between one or two squadrons of bombers to our roster, depending on how we choose to outfit our fighter chassis.

Not to mention the goodwill we'd generate with Sienar for clearly making them our preferred supplier for smaller craft.

Zepal was an ideal candidate. For the job she already had. You reinforced her commendations and made a note for yourself she could even work aboard Macabre. Meanwhile, you continued you search.

Many of your candidates were previously eliminated due to their affiliation with the past Captain. This time, you decides to relax that requirement a bit and produced.

"Lieutenant Roth Tierce." The current tactical officer aboard Splinter. Aside from obviously being some kind of relation to the former Captain, he was note worthy for his distinct Corellian accent, quite a bit different than thr clipped, precise tones of core orders that most imperial officers possessed, yourself and Captain Tierce included.

Roth Tierce seemed unremarkable at first glance, until you saw his exemplary academic record. Top marks at the academy and several recommendations that he be given a command role on a smaller vessel like a Carrack cruiser.

"Lieutenant," you choose your words carefully, "I have to start by asking what your relation is to Captain Tierce."

"We're cousins, ma'am."

"Close?" You press.

"We served together on Splinter," Roth says, "Grew up together on Corellia. Yes ma'am, I would say we were close."

"I don’t mean to sound rude," you continue, "But your service record doesn’t seem to match your academic one."

Roth shifts on his feet. "That's. . . . Complicated ma'am. It can be difficult to receive commendation while serving under a relative," he seems reluctant to discuss it further.

"Are you content riding the Tierce-family repulsor sled?" You ask, resting you chin on a finger.

"Excuse me?" Roth is taken aback.

"It seems to me you're a perfectly capable officer who is riding happily along on reputation alone. Wouldn't you like to prove yourself?"

"I'm a naval officer," Tierce replies, "Just as much as you are, ma'am. I am capable of holding my own."

"And how did you end up serving directly under your cousin? Was that an accident or by design?"

Roth takes a few slow breaths, "My uncle is . . . Was a ranking officer in the navy. Colonel Reynuld Tierce. We are a military family, and it was always seen to that we . . . Helped one another."

You nod as he speaks, "And how does this relate to what you mentioned earlier? Difficulty serving under a relative?"

Roth looks offended. "I wont drag my cousin through the mud, I think you've already done enough of that. . . . Ma'am."

"I assure you," You say, "Your cousin did enough of that on his own. Now, why is it you haven't made a name for yourself?"

Roth hesitates, looks torn, and sighs, "Captain Tierce was Uncle Reynuld's favorite, ma'am. It was seen to that I didn’t 'overshadow' him. Once he had achieved a higher command, I could move with him."

>Zepal absolutely deserves better than her current status. Where would you see her go, were you made XO?
"Zepal is best facing technical issues. I would honestly want to see her firing bigger guns than on a Victory. Maybe a station on an Imperial, or Executor even if there are any left."

>Vells' squadron has learned an object lesson and improved their performance in the process. What do you think it would take for them to become an example to the rest of the fleet's fighter pilots?
"A reward. Vells is a good man, stupid at times, but a good soldier. Right now he knows enough to keep his head down and neck covered. A dog will shy away when its kicked. If you want Vells to trust you, you must show him why he should. Right now, Vells fears you. If you get him to love you, he can spread the lessons he's learned because then he may agree with them.

You could tell Lieutenant Tierce was surprised when you offered him thr XO position, but he also seemed excited to take it. Perhaps with an ally among the "Old crew" you could begin to turn things around, relations wise.

It troubled you a bit to realize that yiu have only solved a small part of your problems by dealing with your staff situation. You have a whole ship and a whole task force to look out for now.

>Should we recommend Zepal be moved out of our task force to a ship with bigger guns, where she can do more good, or do we keep her and her talent to ourselves?
Well, can we trust another officer not to intentionally stunt her growth? Women in the Imperial Navy tend to get stuck with shit postings and generally screwed over.
>>
>>1386271
Not really, no. There's no way of guaranteeing that if we get her moved up to a big ship, the skipper there won't screw her over because she refused his attempts to screw her.

Which means we really want to keep her as part of our task force, where we can look out for her. The question then is, do we keep her as a gunnery officer, and move her with our flagship whenever we move up, or do we put her on the track for her own command?
>>
>>1386305
Maybe if we manage to bring Thrawn back into the fold in the Sheevy P segments, Alana can try to get her a spot on the Chimaera? Thrawn himself likely gives no fucks about NHM bullshit, being an alien himself. And he appreciates skilled and clever subordinates, case in point Rejlii Mithel.
>>
>>1386371
Whilst having Thrawn back on retainer would be ideal, I cannot see it as likely. Without the Vong to bind them together, Thrawn and Palpatine's goals and methods are simply far too opposed. Thrawn has had plenty of time to begin his expansion into the Unknown Regions, and very likely has already established the Empire of the Hand in some form.

At the end of the day, his loyalty has always been to his people. His preferred method is order and peace. Now that he has fleets, armies and planets of his own, I find it highly unlikely that he would allow someone as utterly ambitious and ruthless as Sheev to threaten the Chiss Ascendancy.

Especially with us going full blown dark side in a very flamboyant and open manner.

I estimate that it is highly likely that the Grand Admiral is lost to us.

Thraawn, however...

Welcome back to Dark Empire Quest where we guide two characters Imperial naval officer Alana Tyrna, and the reborn Emperor Palpatine. Yesterday, we guided Alana through a leadership crisis on her new command, the Victory II-Class star Destroyer "Splinter". With Lieutenant Roth Tierce, cousin of the Splinter's last captain, as your new Executive Officer, you are ready to face any challenges that come your way .

Useful links:
>Twitter: https://twitter.com/DarkEmpireQuest
>Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/u/Timekiller21

After his appointment, you see a gradual uptick in crew morale, less dirty glances when people think you aren't looking, fewer conversations abruptly stop when you enter.

You’ve likewise seen your day-to-day patrol operations increase in efficiency. Since the last Rebel task force you dismantled rather handily, there has been no concerted effort to take the system. It looks like you gave the rebels enough of a bloody nose that they aren't keen to repeat their endeavor. This is in line with the rumor circulating that they're over extended, and reeling from a few powerful blows Thrawn's force managed to land on them.

In fact, the only incident worth reporting was the envoy dispatched from Isard's Remnant, a Lamda-shuttle that was reportedly checking on Hemei after word of the battle leaked. It wasn't a concern of yours since Moff Arvendis handled it. But to you it was obvious that the rest of the Remnant had its eye on some of Sedriss's holdings, including at least the factories of Hemei IV. If it came to a fight between Isard and your chosen warlord, you weren't positive how your loyalties would fall.

As Imperial Executor, Sedriss claimed legitimacy to the throne, but of course there were half a dozen others who said the same.

It was hopefully a problem you wouldn't have to encounter.

The only other thing worth reporting was the gradual uptick in civilian traffic in the system. It fell to your task force to query, scan, and if need be, search and seize vessels entering the system. Eternally hunting for contraband, smugglers avoiding imperial tolls, and rebel agents. Lately, you have seen a huge number of imperial bulk freighters arriving empty and picking up machine parts from the factories on Hemei to take to the Deep Core and Byss.

It was fortunate then that your crew efficiency had increased, because it was all you could do to keep up with basic operations. Your requests for some more IPVs or corvettes to handle the load where all summarily denied. Military forces were constrained everywhere.

It didn’t take a military analyst to see that something was happening. Figuring out 'what' was the hard part. Though at the moment, that wasn’t your concern.

(1/3)
>>
With events on board Splinter now largely settled and under control, you turn your attention to the rest of the task force. Four capital ships, One star destroyer (Splinter), two medium cruisers (Praetor and Scylla) and a Corvette (Macabre) with a combined fighter wing of 60 Tie/Ln fighters spread over five squadrons. Two aboard Splinter and a further three between the two Strike-class, one of which was split over the two ships. Not to mention a significant landing/occupation force aboard Splinter, many of whom were involved with peace keeping on Hemei itself.

Such a force paled in comparison with the Imperial navy at its pre-Endor height, but was noteworthy enough for you having previously helmed only one ship at a time. In any case, you decided it would be in your best interest to integrate with your other captains as you have with the crew on board Splinter.

A meeting is scheduled and convenes aboard Splinter in one of her few conference rooms. Gathered here are yourself, your Executive Officer Lieutenant Tierce, your three subordinate captains, and your five squadron leaders.

You of course know Captain Tyvek, now of Scylla, beaming his normal, crazed smile from his seat. Also present is Lieutenant Vells of Aurek Squadron, looking unusually subdued. Vells, like the other squadron commanders, is a young man, which is not unusual in a branch with an incredibly high turnover rate. He is your senior squadron commander at any rate, giving him some measure of authority over the others.

Also here is the new captain of Macabre, Captain Lerysh, a fresh faced academy graduate who had served as Tyvek's XO onboard. Unlike his former captain, Lerysh lacks the bombastic attitude and casual disregard for his own life thay corvette captains normally posses. At a guess, you would say he's suffering from nervousness over being a new Captain among such other proven figures.

Lastly, Captain Pennick of Praetor. A middle aged man who has the look of a long time career officer. You suspected that Pennick's career may even have stretched back to the clone wars. Otherwise, you didn't know much about the man. He followed orders without complaint and handled himself ably. If he resented serving under either you or Captain Tierce, he gave no sign.

(2/3)
>>
With this meeting, you'll be setting the tone for the rest of your interactions with them. Fumble now, and regaining their trust or respect may be difficult or impossible. No pressure, Alana.

What sort of tone will you set for your relation with them?

>Rule absolutely. Nerfs need a herder, your orders are supreme and are not to be disobeyed or questioned.
>Ask for critical thinking, you don’t pretend to know everything, and welcome feedback on your orders and instructions.

"Before we begin," you say. "I want to make something clear. "I'm no Darth Vader," you give what you hope is a disarming smile. "People male mistakes, that is forgivable. A ruler is only as effective as those under her. If you deny me your thoughts and insights you deny the Empire the best part of yourselves. I expect discipline and professionalism at all times, but you need not fear to share your mind."

You survey the room as you talk. Approval from Tyvek is clear, as if that weren't a given. Lerysh nods, Pennick is unreadable. Your squadron leaders look bemused and even Vells looks to have lightened up a bit .

It may be prudent to establish clarity on where you stand on one of the longest running naval debates. That is, who the supreme "hitting arm" of the navy is. Doing so may allow better coordination and cohesion with captains who understand how you think.

>Capital ships are primarily a support structure for the starfighters

It'd be foolish to ignore the firepower that our Victory can bring to bear. While the Fighter jockey in me wants to put more of an emphasis on the fighters at the moment we only do have TIE/LNs. If our squadrons had more punch I'd be tempted to go that way

"While I'm sure it would make the fighter jocks happy for me to say that Splinter, Praetor and Scylla act as carriers first and foremost, it's not the truth. And before they look too unhappy and the 'traditionalists' start gloating, Ties are not just to serve as distractions till we close within turbolaser range. In reality, I want us to remain flexible. If we become wedded to one style or doctrine, we leave ourselves vulnerable." You pause for effect, "In short, gentlemen, while I expect you to follow orders, I also trust that you've received command positions for a reason and that often times you will know what is best for your ships, crews, and pilots."

"There is another order of business I would like to bring up," Lieutenant Tierce says. "After receiving our latest requisition reports, I'm told we're authorized to trade in two squadrons of our Ties for more specialty oriented fighters fresh off the assembly lines at Byss. I had request a complete overhaul of our fighter compliment but I've been told resources for fighter production have been allocated elsewhere.

A few more dull days pass after your captains meeting with no significant events.

"Ma'am?" A crewman calls, trotting toward you from the communications station at the rear of the bridge. "Captain Tyrna, high priority coded message from High Command." This peaks your interest, in your years as a captain, you'd never once received a high-priority coded message. Those were strictly used for major operations requiring secrecy.

You follow the ensign back to his post where he enters a key combination to bring up the decoded message.

SPLINTER AND TASK FORCE TO PROCEED AT BEST SPEED TO TARKIN'S FANG DEPOT. ALL OTHER PRIORTIES ARE RESCINDED. MESSAGE ENDS.

It looks like the garrisoning of Hemei IV was someone else's problem now. Tarkin's Fang was an open secret in the Navy, an ostensibly hidden planet further in the Deep Core, home to a well stoked naval depot, and a junction for one of the few, winding, hyperlanes that crossed through the chaotic center of the galaxy.

"Plot a course for Tarkin's Fang," you say, "And inform the rest of the task force." Something indeed was happening. Something big.

(1/2)
>>
You are stunned by the scope of the operation at Tarkin's Fang. It looks like the entire 2nd Fleet has gathered here, four Imperial-Class star destroyers and their escort ships, nearly forty all told. You see Strikes, Carracks, Arquitens-Class light cruisers, Raiders, Lancers, and even a pair Vigil-class corvettes. Among them, clouds of tie fighters buzz to and fro on patrol. Here and there, the bloated, white shapes of shuttles pass back and forth between them, forming thin lines of communication between the ships and the planet itself. The only thing out of place to you, were three ships you didn’t recognize of an unknown class, boxy, black, and bristling with antenna spikes and lined with hangar bays, roughly the size of a Dreadnaught, nestled near the center of the formation.

This was an attack fleet. A purposeful assemblage of ships you hadn't seen for some time. You had a suspicion that your loyalties to Sedriss were about to be fixed by warfare.

"Transmission coming in from Admiral Zahn's flagship, Conquest."
"Put it through," you say, straightening up and trying to look imperious.

Admiral Zahn's image flashes to life before you, a hawkish face and light blue eyes meet your gaze. Zahn and Gilded Wasp fought at Endor. Zahn famously rejected Palleon's retreat order over a question of chain of command, solidifying his reputation as a strictly conventional, "by the book" soldier, and only retreated once it became clear he was free of any command obligation from higher up the chain. It was only natural such fierce devotion be rewarded, Zahn was an obvious choice for admiral.

"My pleasure, admiral," you reply, "And how does the Splinter Task Force fit in to this operation?"

Zahn narrows his eyes. "Ultimately you will be tasked with escorting these new carriers for us."

You realize the admiral must mean the strange dark, boxy shapes you saw. "Carriers, sir?"

"New carriers for experimental fighter. Some . . . Officials from Byss arrived with them, on the Executor's personal orders."

Experimental fighters and a new class of cruiser, that would be a reasonable explanation for why resources for replacing Splinter's old fighter compliment are so lacking. You can't help but look at the strangely shaped ships, even at this distance they seem strange to you, so different from the clean, white, angular shapes of most Imperial warships.

These carriers are based on the Lictor-class Dungeon Ship design, and are carriers for Shadow Droids, though Alana doesn't know this yet,

"I'll have the details transmitted to your XO," Zahns with a dismissive wave of his hand. "For now, what you need to know is this: Firstly, you're now a part of this fleet and fall under my supervision. Secondly, protect those cruisers or it's your head. Thirdly, in my command I expect there will be no heroics. I expect my orders are received, acknowledge and carried out," he narrows his gaze, "With no hesitation. Don't say "I will follow out any orders that are logically sound." That could be interpreted as we are expecting unsound orders to come from Zahns. We are a small part in a large operation. Orders that may not seem "logical" to us may make sense in the grand scheme of things.

Within hours of entering orbit of Tarkin's Fang and falling into formation with the three Revenant-class carriers under your protection, Lieutenant Tierce tracks you down breathlessly. "Captain!" he calls, quite unlike his normal, unflappable self.

"Lieutenant? What is it?"

"Captain Tyrna I-" Teirce draws himself short, takes a breath and starts again much more calmly. "Those vessels, the carriers?"

"Yes?" Impatience creeping into your voice.

"They're . . . Very strange ma'am. They are not Imperial Navy."

You blink twice, "Then who in Emperor's name do they report to?"

"Executor Sedriss himself," Tierce says in a hushed voice. "They don't have military officers in command. They're some kind of . . . They may be Force users. Dark Jedi," Tierce says, "like Vader."

The name evokes cold shivers down your spine. You'd never met the man, if he could be called a man but you had heard stories.

"But the Jedi are-"

"Extinct?" Tierce finishes your thought, "The Empire said they had tracked them all down before Yavin but . . . The Rebels claim to have a few rattling around, and people said certain officials had the gift." Tierce looks around to ensure he's not being watched, "Some say that Sedriss is one."

As far as I can tell, canon is at best unclear on this. In this continuity, you (and any Imerpial) would be vaguely aware of the Jedi being traitors to the republic who tried to kill the emperor. So you may know OF them, but you lack firm details.
>>
>>1387663
Furthermore, the PA should be neutral at this point, though I'd say they're quite worried about their closest neighbors Zsinj and the NR. And could Kaine be able to commit forces to distract the NR's northern front if asked? Since in Canon DE, he fell in line with Palpatine after he captured Coruscant.
>>
>>1387679
It shouldn't matter tat this point, but the Pentastar alignment falls under Thrawn's purview.

At some point (probably after Palpy reveals himself and galactic events matter more) I'll make a more detailed map. Until that point, things in the galaxy at large are bit hazy

What do we know of the Jenessari? Because they seem almost comically easy for Sidious to convert to the dark side, since literally the only reason why they fell is that they don't know enough of the Sith they emulate to actually be evil. Vader murdered their emissary but him being a traitor gives us an excellent excuse to throw him under the buss.

Strongly anti-Imperial for the most part. It would be possible to scoop up a few as Dark Side Adepts probably, but I wouldn't say it would be any easier than random force-talented people or the Ysanna or something. Certainly an option though. Just not a "home run"
>>
"We'll adapt to it," you say, "We have to look at the bigger picture. This is a period of instability during a political schism. It's up to us to be the force of stability in the galaxy. If the Imperial navy gets flaky . . . What do we have left?"

"There's more," Tierce says, seeming to brush off your words "Those ships, their official designation: Revanant Class-Carrier and medical reclamation Cruiser."

"Medical Reclamation?" You ask.

"I've looked over their compliment," Tierce continues, "They are equipped as fighter carriers, but they also house six surgical suites and two cryogenic storage vaults.

"Six?" You repeat. To be frank, it was unlike the Empire to care so much about its fighter pilots to even have two surgial suites aboard a warship, six on a ship the size of a Revanant was unheard of. "What for?"

"I'm not quite sure, Captain but . . . Something about these ships doesn't sit right with me."

"I'll look into this discreetly. In the meantime, I have trust in the Empire, and I assume you do as well," you say, feeling unsafe even as you say them.

Tierce nods, "Yes, thank you, ma'am."

"For now, Keep your superstitions to yourself. Who knows who might be listening. If the ship truly is controlled by dark force users . . . " you leave the left unsaid. As a little girl, you had been told that Vader was the last of the Jedi, the only one not to betray the Republic and Empire. But growing up on Byss, you had always heard . . . Rumors. If Executor Sedriss were a Dark Jedi as well it would explain why he commanded respect from so many.

"Of course," Tierce exhales and gives you a salute you return smartly. "I only found out all this from Zahn's report earlier. He has scheduled the captain of those three Revenants to meet with you later today. I thought you might want to prepare,."

"Thank you, lieutenant." You already feel your composure returning, though a meeting with a Dark Sider has you . . . uneasy.

You decide the safest way to find out more about these ships and their owners is with a simple query through the Imperial holonet. How risky could that be? After all, you have been charged with protecting them, and will be meeting with their captain soon enough.

Preliminary searches only find basic specifications of the vessels themselves, armament, propulsion, etc. Even the very unusual medical equipment housed onboard. At first it all seems to be a waste of time, until of course you come upon the idea to look into the experimental fighters they carry.

"Shadow Droids," you say aloud. The second word roles off your tongue with distaste. Just like Xenos, the Empire had little use for droids, and those two factors interestingly enough shared common origin in the traitorous and cowardly Separatist faction during the Clone Wars. Well before your time, ancient history.

But still, it was unlike the Empire to utilize droids. Most of the specifications were classified on the shadow droid, but a few bits of material where listed. Power couplings, repulsor lift drives, nutrient fluid.

You stopped.

Nutrient fluid. Medical reclamation.

No.

You shut off your datapad. The only reason a Shadow Droid would have to use nutrient fluid in its construction was if . . . It wasn't really a droid at all. Maybe all of the surgical centers onboard the Revanant carriers were to implant organics into those fighters.

You take a shuddering breath. It's not worth looking into any further. These were likely war-time measures, you reminded yourself. It didn't change your belief in the Empire or in your mission. You would carry on, and figure out something to tell Tierce later.

***

You'd gathered from Tierce the name of the people you are to meet and run them through the holonet.

Gwellib Ap-Llewff. Savuud Thimram, Brakiss.

No results. As far as Imperial holonet is concerned, these men didn't exist. It was unfortunate, you felt, that this wasn't the truth as you watched their shuttle settle down onto Splinter's flight deck. You were still a bit shaken from your investigation into the Shadow Droids and the Revanants and you hoped now, more than ever that these men were not Force-sensitives as was claimed.

The ramp slowly lowered to the deck with a hiss of steam and a squad of black-armored storm troopers emerged. They were not the elite Death Troopers you were familiar with, but you didn't want to look too deep into it, knowing they too were likely members of this shadow organization Sedriss was running on the side.

You had pulled out what stops you could to greet these . . . Dignitaries? A few platoons of strop troopers and some flight officers gathered to greet them. You, and Tierce alongside you waited at the foot of the shuttle as they emerged. You were momentarily stunned to see the man in front, wasn't even a man. He was a Xeno, one you didn't recognize with a strange flat nose, white eyes and a taut, humorless mouth. The other two are humans, though all three are dressed in strange robes, wearing talismans and with the Xeno carrying a bejeweled walking stick.

They descended the shuttle, paying no mind to the trooper escort. You weren't sure if you should salute or not, but you did anyway, quickly.

"Gentlemen, welcome aboard Splinter," you say, hoping your nervousness wasn't obvious. "I am-"

"Captain Tyrna," the Xeno said, "Lieutenant Tierce. I am Ap-Llewff. This is Brakiss, and Thimram." he speaks slowly and deliberately, "We were expecting to be greeted by no less."

"Apologies for the slapdash greeting," you say, "I wasn't sure which protocol to follow exactly for you."

Ap-Llewff blinks a few times, his face remaining unreadable, "In that case Captain, I think you made the best decision in giving us the best greeting possible for you."

You catch a sinister grin from the one called Thimram. "Yes. Of course. This way to the conference room, gentlemen.

The five of you settle into Splinter's conference room and seal the door. You catch a glimpse of metal on the hip of the man called Brakiss under his robes.

A lightsaber?

You'd seen them on holovids as a child and it fit in too well with what you had heard about these three.

"Captain Tyrna," Ap-Llewff begins, "I wanted to get the opportunity to meet with you before our coming battle that I might . . . Give you some clarity regarding your mission and instill in you its importance." He pauses for a few moments as if he wants you to speak, and just when you prepare to-

"We will protect them at all costs," you say "Our ships before yours, My Lords." The words flow naturally from your mouth, so easily you begin to doubt if they were yours to begin with. No. That way lies madness.

Ap-Llewff smiles for the second time. "So you do understand." He rises from his seat and points the palm of his hand at you, closing his eyes.

Beside you, Tierce tenses up, but does nothing.

"My child," Ap-Llewff says, his voice distance, his head canted backward, "I can sense that you are a strong, loyal servant of the Emperor. You long for order and justice in this galaxy."

"Yes," you say, "Yes I do." The words again flow easily, but you know resolutely they are true. It was the only thing worth fighting for at present.

The Darksider, for it is obvious to you now that is what he is, opens his eyes, "Our Squadrons will be yours to direct once the battle is joined. I feel their performance will surprise you." He falls silent again.

The Darksiders stand as one and prepared to leave.

"But," you say, drawing their attention. "But. Isn't admiral Zahn the one in charge of this operation? Wouldn't a more experienced soldier use then more effectively?"

Ap-Llewff looks at you again, his face blank, "Admiral Zahn is a piece in this game. As are you, as are we all. And the Sabacc hand you have been dealt is the Shadow Droids. If it is failure you fear, perhaps we can find another?"

"No," you say, "Not failure. I simply want-" you fight for words, "The best for our forces."

"Then you will manage the fighters as we asked," Brakiss says, "No matter how they are employed, succeed or fail, we will have learned something." He begins to turn away, "We can always build more of the things, the parts are easy enough to get."

Brakiss leaves, followed by Thimram.

"You will do well to head Brakiss," Ap-Llewff says, "I trust you will not fail us." He turns his back to you, you see his lightsaber hanging from his belt clearly. "Farewell, Captain. We can find the way to the shuttle."

The door hisses closed behind him.

Tierce exhales loudly, "What was-"

"Lieutenant Tierce," you cut him off, "You are an Officer of the Impeiral Navy. You are to maintain a sense of calm even in the face of death."

Tierce gapes at you, you turn and meet his gaze, your eyes, ice. "If I have to tell you how to conduct yourself around-" You couldn't say superior officers for they weren't officers, "Your superiors, then perhaps I need to start my search for another XO again. Do I make myself clear?"

Tierce straightens up, his emotions vanishing beneath a mask of professionalism. "Perfectly clear, ma'am."

"Good."

You stand up roughly and march out of the conference room, headed for the turbo lifts and the bridge.

You reach the panoramic transparisteel viewport just in time to see the Darksider's Lamda shuttle returning to Grave Hand.

"Captain Tyrna?"

"Yes, what?" You ask the comms officer hastily.

"Admiral Zahn, ma'am. He's giving orders to the entire fleet, we're being given jump coordinates."

You sigh silently and nod, wishing you had more time to compose yourself after that meeting. "Yes, get confirmation from the rest of the task force and signal Conquest that we acknowledge and await jump signal. What's the destination?"

"Byss, ma'am."

The flight to Byss requires over a dozen individual micro jumps, from beacon to beacon through the heart of the Deep Core. Some of these jumps have margins of error of only a few kilometers. You shudder to think of how many imperial scouts must have perished charting these lanes.

The crew is on edge, it is only through double and triple checking every jump with each portion of your command that you are able to make it through to . . . Home. Byss.

You are momentarily awestruck. Zahn was right. The fleet was here.

The whole fleet. You knew a fleet of this size couldn't realistically jump back the way you had come, and in fact knew of only one sufficient hyperlane to get this fleet out, the Byss Run.

The Byss Run which pointed a direct line straight to the Galactic Capital. Coruscant.

Ultimately, her ships rendezvoused with the fleet gathering in the dark heart of the galaxy, Byss. Operation Darklight, the conquest or liberation of Coruscant is on the eve of execution. Mara has been training in the art of lightsaber combat with Sedriss and your Dark Side Elite. The Shadow Droid Project has reached its zenith and is ready for combat testing.

With so many separate issues on your mind, it falls to you to determine the best order to approach them.

>Operation Darklight takes precedence, worry about the Dark Side afterward

We do need to have a strong military before going depper into the dark side stuff.
>>
Without an empire worth ruling, it makes little sense having a strong apprentice. The force will have to wait. In that case, there remains one more question about Darklight before it can potentially be executed. Who will oversee the fleet?

>Admiral Zahn
>Admiral Yazz (A fiery and aggressive commander, has a reputation for ruthlessness)
>Executor Sedriss
>I will supervise the fleet, myself

Glad to see you QM TK.

>Admiral Zahn
He proved to be loyal to our orders and Sedriss isn't a military strategist.

It's good to be here! I'm surprised you don't have any trips, you've been with this thread since the fucking very beginning practically.

Also, am I retarded? Is this thread not bumping? Is there a bump limit or something?
>>
>>1389796
I believe there is. Maybe starting a new thread is better?

>I'm surprised you don't have any trips,

Eh...i don't see the need for a trip just that.

>Maybe starting a new thread is better?
Probably? Maybe? It says 750 is the bump limit, but we're only at 636 replies . . . whatever, I'll just carry it over to a new thread.

It's fine, I just think of you as "Flocksoe"

Gimme 5 to make a new thread and I'll figure out how to link it here.

For sake of argument, I'm gonna redo last two votes in hopes of getting just a few more votes in. You understand.
