You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

"Are you sure Rhein and Aislin should be outside? The cold season is starting to settle in."

True, your mother wrapped them up in so much wool it looks like they'll just roll away if they so much as tip over, but their heads aren't covered up and you don't want them getting sick; it might be dangerous, especially at their age.

"I'm certain," your mother says. "Would you like me to remind you of the lengths you went to to crawl around the palace grounds?"

"Please don't."

"No, please, tell us more," Reagan says. "It sounds quite intriguing."

"I can tell you about it later," Olwen says. "I know all the good stories."

There goes another little piece of your dignity. At least this is just in private. It'd be terrible if word of this was made public. The embarrassment would stand a better chance of killing you than anything else so far.

"Hahahaha!" Your father laughs and picks Rhein up to swing him around a little. "That's nothing to be ashamed of; men should be adventurous by nature!"

Your brother volunteered to take over for the king this afternoon, so your father suggested that you take the children out in the gardens to play. It's a good sign that the Crown Prince is being a little more invested in his position, but you still asked Myrddin to stay with him as an observer just in case. Until all business is conducted, it's family time for you.

"I'm glad you're enjoying life as a young grandfather. I was almost afraid you were going to feel old."

"Nonsense!" Your father not-so-carefully drops your son in Reagan's arms. Rhein giggles at his antics, so you're not worried he got hurt. "Age is a mindset! So long as I don't feel old, I'm not old!"

That might be the sanest thing your father has ever said, so you choose not to think of how it actually works; you suspect geriatric soldiers are geriatric regardless of how old they think they are.

"Speaking of which, have you heard anything from Vitland, mother?" You ask the Queen. "Grandfather should have heard about the children by now."

"I received a short letter from him a few weeks ago," the Queen says. "He's quite please that you were able to marry into Olstren's royalty, and he hopes his lineage can come to dominate the continent within a few generations. Unfortunately, he think himself to old to travel and my brother is busy with his duties, so he won't be able to visit."

"We can travel to Vitland instead," Reagan says. "Although it would have to wait for the children to be a little older…"

"You don't need to worry about that, dear," Queen Margrete says. "Father still has a decade or two left in him so long as he doesn't strain himself. I'm certain you'll be able to meet him."

You continue to look after the children until your parents retire and Reagan decides to put Rhein and Aislin to bed so they can take a nap.

"Myrddin's investigation into your cousin Celdwyn should be done by now, correct?" Reagan asks. "Would you like me to join you when you meet him?"

Someone will need to look after Rhein and Aislin, but you can ask Eleri to take care of it. Last you heard, she was in your library.

"Sure, you can come with us. Olwen, can you get Eleri so she can watch over the children while we talk?"

After a few minutes, Olwen to return with Eleri, who agrees to look after the children while you "plot nefariously."

You don't disagree with her. Whatever Myrddin has dug up, you plan on using it very, very well.

You become very optimistic when you push Myrddin's door open and find him laughing like a madman and filling wine glasses to the brim.

"Someone is having a good day," you mumble. "I hope it has to do with my cousin Celdwyn.

"Oh, yes it is," Myrddin says. "One of my agents was added to Celdwyn's ledgers."

Ah, that would explain Myrddin's good mood. It's quite surprising that your cousin would display is list of clients so openly, but you won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

"That's a good thing?" Olwen asks.

"Prince Celdwyn's ledger should have a list of his clients," Reagan says. "If we steal it, we could ruin his business."

"That is the most straightforward plan," you say. "Unless you have other suggestions?"

"I think we can swindle Celdwyn out of a large amount of gold," Myrddin says. "Introduce other potential clients to him, have them request moderates amount of gold each, then they all disappear and leave Celdwyn poor and desperate."

That would certainly hurt your uncle's finances and it would be a little easier than stealing the ledger, although it would give you less to work with.

"Right now, we need leverage, not money," you say. "How soon can you get the ledger?"

"By morning," Myrddin says. "Getting the ledger is just a matter of getting Celdwyn drunk enough and stealing it."

"You're certain he carries it with him?" Reagan asks. "In his position, I'd make sure to keep the ledger somewhere secure."

"He'll carry it with him if he's meeting one of his clients," Myrddin says.

"Go ahead," you say, "but don't get caught."

"I know, your highness."

"So, what do we do with the ledger once we have it?" Olwen asks.

"The first order of business will be to decode the cipher, but I expect that to be straightforward," Myrddin says. "The most valuable information in the ledger are the names it contains. I expect I'll have dirt on most of Prince Aled's clients, so tracking the loans and what they were used for shouldn't be too difficult."

"And then we can blackmail the clients with their crimes," you finish. "Or erase any evidence of their debts in exchange for information on my uncle's dealings."

"That sums it up," Myrddin says. "If your uncle's clients believe he's turning on them, some of them might get… desperate. Even if they don't go so far as to murder him themselves, it shouldn't be difficult to frame one of them and wash our hands clean of the whole thing."

"That might lead to inconvenient rumours though," Reagan says. "It isn't my usual preference, but getting clear evidence of your uncle's wrongdoings and getting rid of him legally might be better in the long run."

"I hadn't considered it much," Myrddin says, "but it would also make it easier to suppress his children. It'd be difficult to carry things through to the end though; assassination would be a much simpler solution."

I don't know, is the dirt on him enough to get him the executioner's axe? And wouldn't our brother be the one to decide that? I somehow doubt he would have enough balls to order the execution of one of his family members, with all those kinslayer penalties and such. What do you guys think?

"Put pressure on my uncle's clients until they turn on him," you say. "Trade or sell secrets, threaten them, back them in a corner, I don't care. Just make sure he gets the blame."

"And avoid implicating any of our associates," Reagan says.

"I keep a close eye on the prince's business and political partners to make sure they aren't compromised, so that shouldn't be an issue," Myrddin says. "However, I'll keep that in mind just in case."

"I expect good news over the next few days."

"And I shall deliver it to you, your highness," Myrddin says. "Really, just the fact that Celdwyn lost his ledger should be enough to turn people against him. Celdwyn preys on the desperate, but he also lends to criminals and corrupt nobles who are allied with Prince Aled. These aren't people who can tolerate that kind of carelessness."

You nod; you most certainly wouldn't be forgiving if your most private records were leaked like this. That's why Myrddin keeps them scattered in different books and under different codes. You know exactly what to do in order to get any piece of information you need, but anyone else would have a very difficult time.

"With that done, have you heard anything new about the Crown Prince?" Reagan asks. "He seemed to be more excited about his work this morning."

"According to the ministers and bureaucrats, Prince Haul has decided to pay closer attention to the dreary minutia of running a kingdom," Myrddin says. "It isn't much of an improvement, but it shows he's at least interested in learning."

"Hopefully, he'll continue like this and improve in the near future," you say. "What about his wife?"

"Her time with Eleri seems to have helped her become more confident, if the palace gossip is credible," Myrddin answers. "It'll take time for her to understand the full scope of her future responsibilities, but if we point her in the right direction, I'm confident the Queen can keep her going."

You'll leave your brother be for a while and see how he does, but you can prod Mair along a little. Reagan and Eleri can spend time with her to give her advice, or perhaps there's a simple project she could manage around the palace to gain experience.

"Reagan, do you think you could spend some time with Mair?" You ask your wife. "Eleri got her to open up a little, but you're in the best position to help her going forward."

"That's certainly feasible," Reagan says. "I don't know if she has any… underhanded talents, but I can at least help her get used to governing. Even if she can't take a prominent role, she should at least be able to help the Crown Prince with a few tasks."

That's all you're looking for at this point anyway.

"Thank you. Myrddin, let me know if there are any problems."

"As always, your highness."

You leave Myrddin to his work and return to your room, arms around Reagan and Olwen. It's nice to feel the two of them lean on you like this, especially since you don't have to avoid the servants anymore. Who cares if they gossip and spread rumours now? It's not like your marital life needs to be kept secret anymore.

"I'm a little jealous that I can't do anything for Princess Mair," Olwen sighs. "I could ask, but she really doesn't seem like the martial type. Maybe she'd like to know more about the ducal powers?"

"I can ask if she's curious about it," Reagan says. "Don't be too blatant though. We wouldn't want people to think his highness is trying to get his talons into his brother's wife."

"I already have all the women I need in my life, thank you."

As you enter your room, Eleri is singing lullabies over the sleeping children. "Welcome back," she says. "Rhein woke up for a bit, but he's back to sleep now. Did your meeting with Myrddin go well?"

"It was utterly villainous," you say. "So, yes, quite well."

You hang your jacket in the closet. You can't do anything loud around the children and you've spent too many nights away from Reagan, but maybe you can ask Eleri and Olwen to stay? The bed is certainly big enough to allow it.

"You two can stay for the night if you want," you say.

"We're not doing anything in the same room as the children," Olwen says. "It doesn't matter how much you punish me."

"That's not what I had in mind, Olwen."

"It still needed to be said, your highness," Eleri says.

Reagan sleeps to your right, while Olwen takes your left with Eleri hugging her from behind. Even though the seasons are getting colder and you're not actually doing anything, it still feels incredibly hot under the shots.

"I hope we can settle things with Prince Aled soon," Reagan says. "I can't help but feel it's getting in the way of more important things."

"There are much better uses for our time," Eleri agrees. "Like building theatres."

You suspect she's the one who just pinched your ribs.

"It doesn't really matter," Olwen says. "Once he dies, it'll just be someone else causing problems. That's how it usually is."

"That sounds downright depressing," Eleri says. "The fun part about tragedies is that they eventually end."

"I'm bound to run out of enemies eventually." You yawn and close your eyes. "Besides, not all threats are equal. We don't always need to be personally involved with these things. I just need enough subordinates to handle all the smaller problems."

"Myrddin's network of spies is quite useful in these situations," Olwen agrees.

"I'm impressed you're so willing to trust them though," Reagan says. "They could ruin you if they wanted to."

"If I couldn't trust my own spies, I wouldn't be able to do my job."

Eleri grumbles something incoherent about work and sleep and snuggles closer to Olwen. Although you can only guess at what she said, you assumed she was telling you to stop talking and get to sleep. That's sound advice if you've ever heard it; your day wasn't particularly hot, but with the way you just kicked your uncle's hornet's nest, things won't stay slow for long.
