The valley glows with the light of fields of fire diffused in the clouds of ash rising into the sky. Alien flora creak and snap into cinders, their branches held aloft by outspread webbing of charred and boiling mattes of hive flesh as chitinous pustules pop like kernels of some alien fruit between the thin, wispy leaves. Your drones report their concern as their efforts of salvage progress at an ever slower rate day after day, the corpse of the crashed Hive ship spread across the valley melting like a mountain of black ice left in the sun. Viscous coo seeps from its hull, permeating the ground and sending thin, hairlike roots through the soil and strangling the native flora from within with a crisscrossing web of parasitic fibers. Efforts to collect samples have largely met with failure, loosing several drones to the rapid and aggressive parasitic nano-virus which continues to attempt to assemble some manner of hive structure out of the remains of the derelict ship.

Your warriors continue to burn it out, uprooting forests and diverting rivers as your forces maintain their quarantine perimeter, if only just. The land beneath the hull fragments are the worst by far, with thick roots of neural linked organic nano-constructors reaching many meters into the soil through rock and granite, devouring all forms of nutrients and secreting toxic waste as it grows. Much of the crash site has been reduced to glass, the glass then uprooted only to find buried tumors of hive infrastructure remaining beneath. A patrol of phantom warriors look on from a distant ridge line with concern, their forms a blur of psionic distortion as they watch your drones slowly drive back the infestation seeping from the rotting starship.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Best time of the week coming through.

>Efforts to collect samples have largely met with failure, loosing several drones to the rapid and aggressive parasitic nano-virus which continues to attempt to assemble some manner of hive structure out of the remains of the derelict ship.

This is both interesting and concerning. I wonder if we can program our own creep to start auto-building structures soon...

What a lovely preview of what will shortly be happening on Path.
>>
>>1394302
QD don't we have hard light armor projectors? Why not try those?
>>
>>1394302
Shit OQ's creep is some scary shit...and Path will have to deal with it shortly...
>>
>>1394323
>>1394317
We have a simple counter to it anons. Disassembler warheads.
>>
>>1394317
>interesting and concerning
It's neither, it's perfectly expected. Our spores already do that. We unlocked it long ago.
>>
>>1394330
That is fine in other planets. Also it seems the Phantoms will need to move from their world for a time if we plan to use one of those on their own planet.

We should stop is as soin as we can before OQ find the surviving queen and the Phantons.
>>
>>1394321
They won't project underground where the spread is really occurring, will they?

Useful for containing a sample safely, though, yeah.
>>
>>1394342
Actually disassembler warhead have a spread limit built in. They don't kill everything on a planet.

Quick question QD, why a point 2 thread?
>>

We didnt finish the turn last thread
>>
>>1394355
Can't we terraform the planet? I bet a ecological reboot of the entire bio-sphere might help getting read of it.

I was thinking in something like detonating the warhead inside the planets core.
>>
>>1394355
That's correct.

While we can handle the containment for now, I'm interested in seeing how the (formerly) Barren Queen deals with this. We agreed it's her planet, after all, and it'd be interesting to see her standard "anti-creep" protocol. We can also offer disassembler warheads for her to use along with the other tech at our disposal. We have no real need to keep our tech secret here.

Sirens echo through the cramped halls of the small urban hive of subsidised housing and corporate worker condominiums as flashing rope lights run along the floors towards either escape pods or emergency bunkers. Humans run every which way, regardless of the direction of the lights, some fighting while others flee with piles of goods pilfered from ransacked stores. Taidaren weave between them like fish swimming through a rushing current as they slip in behind every human that breaks a window or kicks in a door, leaving with boxes of seemingly useless items and layers of poorly fitting human tailored clothes bundled up over them haphazardly. Ships flee the docking bays of Bedrock with frightening haste as you see several freighters ripping the docking clamps of their port clean from their anchors, other, less durable ships shearing off chunks of their hulls as others are let loose from their clamps only to skim the wall of the docking bay on their way out, grinding against the shields of nearby ships and smashing away the tug drones like flies.

A human voice comes over an open radio channel, broadcasts from a laser comm directly to your nearby patrol fleet. The voice shakes with unease, as if reading from a script he no longer believes.

"Unidentified fleet, state your business! this is Union territory."

"The Hive has already told you. You are behaving in an abnormal manner. Please return to typical behavior until further notice."

That is what is currently working best as hard light projectors begin making their way to the scene.

You know what would be a good idea for a weapon against OQ creep? Radiation.
We know of a planet in The Red Giant system near the commonwealth that's so irradiated it's harmful even to us, so why don't we research how much irradiation there is and make a weapon out of it?

>>

By deploying weapons I meant anything new and relatively untested. So deploying disassembler warheads would be something we'd need to check on vs our conventional anti-creep containment procedures which already have the Barren Queen's implied support.
>>
>>1394479
No, i just got here.
>>
>>1394484
Warhead would probably be pretty bad to use. Now many smaller versions like stinger missile sized or carpet bombing with disassembler grenades might work if we tweak them to go after only Hive creep

You guys need to chill on the creep thing, just clear it the long and steady way since we got this one in control

No need to nuke it or use the grey goo on it
>>

Disassembler are far from new and they'd be only untested on the battlefield.

Coil shrieks in a vibrant yellow-beige polkadotted burst with swirling lines of vibrant orange. His implant fails to translate it, but alarms begin to go off across the canopy as his boneless tendrils twitch and swirl in their flight control armatures. Lyle is tossed to the wall ass he attempts to reach the seat below Coil's nested collection of controls.

"The fuck happened? They detect us?" Lyle says. "We all know that shuttle we stole has a tracker in it, same with the escape pod but once we dump them in the atmosphere we should be good to go." He flips his fingers over the control switches as the sensor readouts come alive across his console. He flicks it with his finger several times, assuming an error.

"Local space on high alert!" Coil says, his translation overly crude as he struggles to word his colors for proper translation. "Multiple ships to battle stations, deploying strike craft and moving to blockade!" Lyle begins to laugh as the chittering voices of a chorus of drones echo over the radio frequencies.

"Bit of an overreaction I think. Just a little pile of corvettes." Lyle says as he looks over the readings. "Either way, while the slimy bastards flip their shit we can slip out the back door."

The more I think about it, the more I think sending tiny fleets to all the Expanse planets was a good idea. The Union is falling apart now and we haven't even fired a shot. I can only imagine how bad the politicians expect things would get if we actually started shooting at them. It gives them all the more reason to realize that in order to survive they have to give us what we want.

It's funny because every planet we sent ships to are freaking the fuck out even though we only sent a handful of corvettes to each place with no intention of actually attacking. It's the Union's overreaction everyone finds funny.

Lee leans back in his seat with his feet kicked up onto a glowing patch of hard light extended from the floor as he looks over a stack of reports and interview requests slowly scrolling by on the small chitinous data pad, the screen a patch of chromatophore skin-like membrane stretched thin across its rectangular carapace as haptic holograms slide over its surface to form a projected keyboard. You hear a noise, something like the horn of a steam boat mixed with a rumbling of a natural geyser followed by what you could only describe as the noise of a large cat sprinting across the keyboard of a pipe organ. Lee lets the data bad dip down to his lap for a moment as he looks to the wall as it vibrates as if a local tram were riding past inches from the other side as the building rumbles with a thunderous subsonic noise. You manage to translate it as a primordial valen scream, an involuntary emotional display which could best be described in human terms as a mixture of immeasurable fear, stress release, and confusion most typically heard echoing through the halls of centralized centers of higher learning or brokerage firms after an economic bubble has burst, but in prehistoric times was more likely an involuntary alert system to indicate a predator has approached the clan's waters. Lee looks about the room with confusion.

"Was that an earthquake?" He asks, and a short time later another crash makes Lee jump slightly in his seat as Lang slips in the hall as he attempts to enter in a full sprint, and he quickly drags himself to his feet and throws himself through the door to your embassy's offices. Lee drops his datapad with veiled annoyance as Lang catches his breath.

"Fleets... orbiting..." He gets out before dropping to a chair that materializes out of a haptic hologram beneath him at his unconscious desire to find a seat. He seems to notice the surprise only after he sits, only to have the inevitable question cut off with a worker handing him a glass of water.

"Slow down, and start over." Lee says. "Fleets of what, where?"

"Hive fleets! All across the Expanse!" He says. "People are in a full panic, saying it's the first wave of an invasion."

"We said we are observing!" A speaker says with indignation. "Twice this was said! Humans still swarm with mindlessness. Very small survey fleet only meant to gather data of what Humans have done to Hive space."

"Well, humans live there, and that's not how they see it." Lang says. "I ran all the way here from the main press building." Lee glances down to his data pad as news alerts begin to flash along the bottom. He presses one of them as a holographic display of a small collection of corvettes centered around a frigate float into the orbit of Billiard as seen from the telescopes of Brandenburg.

"What that? Is this what all this insanity is about?" Lee asks.

"Those formations just showed up in every system in the expanse." Lang replies.

"Well the Expanse is Hive space." Lee says simply.

Hopefully the Union won't be stupid enough to actually initiate an attack against an overwhelmingly superior force when they're already getting fucked up the ass by the Commonwealth. They also know (or at least the important people should know) they really shit the bed with the Nowhere fiasco and that there might actually be a good reason for the Hive's intervention.

I'm more worried about a few rogue trigger happy commanders attacking our forces than I am about the Union as a whole declaring war on us. I doubt we'll get a chance to go full Zerg, but it would be fun to do so if necessary.

>>1394863
They wouldn't even last a week if we redirected all our forces from the Commonwealth to Union space. We have them ridiculously outnumbered and out gunned without even calling for backup from Theseus/Heretic/Barren Queen. The biggest hindrance to our advance would be Anons not wanting to exterminate everyone on each planet, which would limit us to relatively small scale strikes.
>>
>>1394863
You mean Elizabeth? She is already a Kerrigan. And we are very proud of our adopted daugther.
>>
>>1394921
Also OQ might be waiting for us to move most of our forces. That is another big reason why we cant just invade them:we have only felt OQ prodding us,we have never felt her actually try to invade us.
>>
>>1394949
She was trying to find our capital only and basically responded by mocking her attempt.
>>
>>1394972
Thats my point. She didnt try to invade us. Until she tries and we can gauge her power, Id prefer for us to keep a majority of our forces by Leeland.
>>
>>1394985
The psionic shroud hids our activity there and makes it impossible to know it was our capital.
>>
>>1395018
Pretty much this.

Plus we can blink our forces back instantly in the event of an attack, so the physical location of our military matters much less than it does when travel actually takes a considerable time (like for the Humans). Plus an actual invasion of Leeland would probably be enough of a threat to the war effort that Theseus/Heretic/The Barren Queen would send everything they have to our defense, since if the Red Queen dies it's essentially game over in our attempt to defeat the Void.
>>
>>1394985
We have made a order for more ships. But we REALLY need to get the expanse or we will start having a negative income. Hopefully this "observing fleet" will put enough pressure in the Union politicians.
>>
>>1394921
Not really. We shouldn't go for scorched earth tactics anyway. every human is basically a mini hiveless queen. you don't need to kill everything to take control you don't even need to kill anything in some cases. shock and awe is extremely effective and efficient if we need to fight the Union.

If fights do start I suggest first order of business is liberate the sun bros. we cripple the unions Candaron production, look militarily superior in every way to the Hawks and to the doves we look like the liberators of the downtrodden. Plus we get sun bro genetics.

>>
>>1395039
>Plus we can blink our forces back instantly in the event of an attack, so the physical location of our military matters much less

The Union would have the most *infuriating* time trying to fight us in the Expanse. If we ever started to lose in one system, we'd just blink out, use the extra forces to mop up somewhere we're winning, then send the combined forces back to the formerly losing battle.
From humanity's perspective, they just scared off the bugs only for them to show back up minutes later with twice the numbers.
>>
>>1395135
That's the problem when you fight a Hivemind.

You're not fighting one fleet, you're fighting all their fleets, you just don't know it yet.
>>
>>1395151
Honestly, humanity's only hope in a war would be to assemble all their forces together to mitigate our ability to pick them off one at a time with overwhelming numbers and attempt an all out assault on Leeland. Which would not happen for a multitude of reasons including but not limited to the fact that they don't even know that the Queen is still on Leeland or that killing the Queen would stop the hive..
>>
>>1395151
Don't forget Heretic and Theseus. Heretic must be in a good humor to purge some humans after what they had done at Nowhere
>>
>>1395176
The Queen is in a bunker so deep that she might as well be lurking in the core of the planet, with enough decoys that they'd need a ground war that makes the somme look like a slap fight to drind their way to her.
>>
>>1395176
And the fact their FTL is super slow compared to the Hive blink drive before they even manage to organize and move their fleet we would be able to blink right on top of then.
>>
We should open up a chanel to the humans to ask for a commentary like "we see humans breaking windows dose this have religious meanings"
"No thier rioting!!"
"Rioting? The hive doesn't know this word but humans seem to find it fun"
>>
>>1395176
Plus our tunnel network means if they try to bomb us, we can just move ourselves either away or down. Our underground food supply also means we can just keep pushing out drones. Its a bottleneck scenario, but they will run out of troops long before we do.
>>
>>1395192
Right we actually relocated the Queen after the Smith invaded the Hive.
>>
>>1395199
Humans are so strange...
>>
>>1395176
Hey man, don't underestimate the tenacity or ingenuity of humankind when they've got their back to the wall in a fight. Right now we have an overwhelming edge over them because we've been scoping out their infrastructure and key tech developments when they know absolutely nothing about us. All they need to do is come up with sufficient tactics and technology to match or overcome that edge (and if their survival is on the line you can bet they will start getting creative) and they could really start putting some hurt on us in a fight.

Don't forget, they've got a nigh bottomless supply of naval vessels in storage, a huge population, and one of if not the most technologically sophisticated armies in this setting.
>>
>>1395192
>>1395202

Exactly. Their best hope is to get in a protracted ground war with the Hive in an attempt to penetrate an impenetrable bunker complex under Leeland while fighting an overwhelmingly superior fleet and ground military.

Their "best hope" is insanely improbable, but it is their only path to "victory" that is even slightly possible (absent OQ bullshit).

Lang seems to want to say something, but doesn't quite know what. He stammers for words for a moment before Lee cuts him off.

"How about you just tell everyone to just calm down and stop panicking, and just let the hive do its surveys, alright?" He says, Lang nods shakily for a moment as he thinks.

"Well I was just about run out of the press room with people asking for a statement. That kind of thing is typically your job and people are still worried about any possible invasion."

"Alright, alright. Just put out a written statement." Lee says. "We can do that right? Do we have somewhere to just send written statements? Just tell them it's an astrological survey of the systems and the ships are no more dangerous than a typical transport convoy. Those corvettes are mostly used for material and drone transport anyways. They're practically just panicking over a fleet of starbus-780s in orbit."

"Well you should make it a priority to get that interview set up as soon as possible." Lang says. "I'll pass on the information to the local news outlets but I doubt people are going to be all that pleased regardless."

"They're running out of things to burn out there." Lee says, and looks back to his data pad as he continues to read through requests from various networks for their exclusive. After a short moment he glances back to Lang, as if surprised he is still there, and Lang quickly rushes out of the door with a visible limp. Lee simply sighs with exhaustion and rubs his temples.

>We have endless waves of utterly expendable troops that we can produce in minutes when it takes then decades to make a soldier.
And they are by and large mindless drones that are next to useless if they're not guided by our or a thinker's intelligence. All the Union needs is a way to kill a lot of drones very fast to counter those massive numbers. A nuke or tactical strike from orbit would do the job terribly well, to say nothing of psionic fuckery if they ever manage to get their shit together long enough to figure it out.

>We have technology that advances faster in a month than they have in several thousand years, and shows no sign of decelerating.
Lol no we don't. We have the basic tech the old queens brought with them in their FTL emergency lifeboat, and literally everything else we've reverse engineered at lightening pace from the humans or Skyl. QD has explained several times, in depth, as to why the centralized intelligence makes hives terrible at inventing anything. A single hive is a single entity, and doesn't have the sheer creative potential of a massive society of individuals, no matter how good it is at taking things apart.

>We can make enough ships to double their total reserves in the time it takes then to bring their forces out of mothballing.
We can only make as many ships as our resource income allows, and with the last order we've sort of hit our limit until we expand that. Right now we should actually have negative income because of the resource upkeep costs of our vast numbers of ships. And the Union can bring those ships out of mothballing very, VERY fast if they start getting desperate.

Don't buy too much into your own hype man, hubris has led many great military powers to their own destruction. Right now we hold the edge but when humanity starts to learn more of us they'll start coming up with novel ways to counter that edge.

QNN would hurt the Greens in the election. It might even drive them towards more openly hostile actions rhetoric against the Hive to counter claims they are in league with the alien invaders.

Remember how the Valen made a big public show of support for the Greens while supporting the Tories in reality because they knew how unpopular the Valen were. I know exactly what we're capable of. It's just that once the Union get's a chance to see all our shit, and the time needed to develop counter measures, they could handily counter any single one of those terrible weapons.
>We have Disassemblers that destroy any defensive ground position.
Give them a sample of disassemblers or even the grey aftermath of one of their attacks, and could come up with an EMP pulse, or a chemical based deterrent, or just an extra shell over their defensive positions to absorb the disassemblers before they can reach the heart of the structure. Once you see what they are and how they work it's not hard to come up with a way of stopping it.
>We have weapons that counter anything they bring in.
Can't really stop a 150 megaton thermonuclear blast, but that aside, this is only because we captured their tech and reverse engineered it an a comparative blink of an eye.
>We can hijack their ships and turn them against them.
We've never actually tried to board anything yet, you know, it's not guaranteed to succeed every time by any measure. And all they would have to do to counter that is exactly what we do, install a nuclear dead mans switch in every single craft, to be activated if the ship is captured.

>You literally know nothing about what we're capable of.
And you have very little imagination or foresight. Every single terrible weapon we have can be countered if they learn of it. Our anger at the artifacts is not at all bullshit. And this is actually truthfully ancient hive/Skyl territory.

Plus, the humans have effectively declared war on us through their own actions.

They have:
Invaded our territory and placed WMD's in orbit,
Attacked a sentient protectorate species (the Rhaligeans),
Hired mercenaries to kidnap civilians and diplomats (Lyle capturing drones and a speaker),
Murdered said diplomat in an experiment,
attempted to cover up the civilian's escape by deploying nuclear weapons against their own facility,
Sent a Smith assassin against our head of state,
Been generally overall dicks,
And almost destroyed the fabric of reality.

We're really only angry about the last part, but we can bring up all these things as legitimate causes for us to claim the Expanse beyond historical precedent.

We also have lots of things from our casual knowledge of history to carbon dated ancient hive structures to prove this really is ancestral territory.

>QD wouldn't include the Union with their flashy tech and huge numbers of ships in the setting unless they could prove a genuine challenge to us in a protracted war.
They actually lost their chance to be able to challenge us a while ago and they're starting to realize that. The only way they could fight us effectively is if they set aside all of their difference with the Valen and Commonwealth and worked together to fight us.
>>
>>1395641

>The first one is not happening because nobody here is going to give it to them, the second tells them nothing.
They don't need much to work out a counter measure, just enough to know how the nano bots propogate and spread. It's not like the idea of a grey goo super weapon is a novel one to humanity.

>This is good for us anon. It requires time, effort, and resources and could easily backfire on them if we capture the crew alive.
It doesn't take much time or effort to rig up a ships main power drive to explosively overload I don't think. And the assumption is that by the time they consider dead man's switches in the first place, the welfare of the crew would be mostly a non issue. If the captain had to decide between letting their ship fall into enemy hands to be used against their countrymen and blowing it up with all hands, they'd probably pick the latter.

>You can shoot down the nuke beforehand.
Easier said than done, especially in the numbers the Union likes to deploy them in.

Understand I'm not talking about a single violent confrontation here, I'm talking about a protracted and drawn out war, in which the Union has sufficient time and motivation to focus their war machine on us. And unless we're willing to commit unrestrained genocide or permanently destroy most of the planetary bodies in this sector of space, we're going to have to consider the likely behavior of the Union in the long run.

"Just... pay attention. This isn't a conversation to hand over to the thinkers." Lee says. "I think that should be obvious." Your drone's mind, a tremendously simple thing, even with the relative complexity added in to permit speech, struggles in a fog of confusion as it reaches out to you, searching for something it cannot comprehend. Your drone chirps with a notably different composure, although it is possible Lee simply feels your mind's burning focus.

"Yes." You say. "This method of disseminating information is inefficient. It lacks nuance."

"Well I'm still getting used to the whole... uh, mind melding thing." Lee says as he waves his hand about his head for dramatic effect. "I think I'm starting to get the hang of it though. Either way, I'll make sure that press release it good to go and see if we can wedge our way into a good time slot."

Did you forget that immolator warheads permanently and completely destroy an entire planet, beyond the extent of even our terraforming tech to repair? That isn't something you can include in you standard arsenal of conventional weapons in a war, otherwise you would leave entire swaths of space stone cold dead and useless to us.

Right now we can win just about any sort of war with the Union, but unless you're willing to commit near total xenocide (heh, and it's clear most anons aren't) then you've got to think about what you're going to do about the survivors left over.

And that would probably work, but then you've got their entire state mostly intact that you would have to deal with. They'd have access to all the reserves of material and manpower the Union has access to now, with every reason to fear us. You can bet that in such a state somebody would start furiously researching the weapons we used against them no matter how thoroughly we disarm them.

Lee flips through various letters and memos on his datapad as he searches for the proper information, until he finds the response from QNN to your blanket interview invitation and quickly enters the contact information. There is a short wait before a clearly synthetic voice responds in a flat greeting. Lee listens as it drones on about the lines being busy and it asks for his name and contact information.

"Yes, this is Ryan Lee, human representative of the Hive. I'm calling about your-" Before he can finish the line clicks loudly and there is a rough static of someone jamming a live earpiece into their ear haphazardly.

"Yes, hello!" Someone shouts. You can hear a raucous in the background of voices shouting and machines making the various mechanical sounds of an office in total bedlam. "You're calling about our interview request with the Hive?" As the person finishes his statement you can hear the chaos in the background become silent in a moment. The human on the other end of the line seems to hold his breath.

"Yes, but we'd like to invite you here, to the embassy. What would be your earliest time slot available?" There is a static filled murmur that seems to carry on for a long moment until you can hear someone loudly whisper back and forth.

"I don't care, everyone's covering it, cancel it. We'll put your time slot on the net but that block is off air, damnit!"

"Would you be available... tonight?" The voice says. "Twenty two thirty?"

"Uh, yea, I suppose that works." Lee says. He glances to your drone with surprise. "That's the middle of prime time." He thinks.

"Great! We'll send a crew over in a few hours to get things ready!" The voice says with genuine enthusiasm, and Lee ends the call as people begin to cheer in the background loud enough to make the sound begin to cut out.

"Uh... well, I think you just pushed the prime time news cast off the air, but they say a film crew will be here in a few hours." Lee says as he puts down the data pad with a look of surprise confusion.

The name they took on is virtually meaningless. They could be the Free Alliance of Kittens and Puppies and it wouldn't change that they are a military junta ruling whatever they can of the Confederation's territory since the civilian government on Earth collapsed a hundred years ago.

Lee manages to close out the various menus on the datapad and pull up several articles from QNN when there is a short ping from the intercom built into the office of the front of the embassy.

"Now what is it?" Lee asks, looking to your drone expectantly as he walks out into the main entrance hall of the embassy where a small speaker sits squat by the door with a well dressed human.

"Yes, that is quite impressive pronunciation for speaking an alien language, but when will Lee be available-" His face seems to light up as Lee enters. "Ah!" He says.

"I'm sorry, who are you?" Lee asks. "The parliament security seems to keep out the mobs but we've been getting a surprising amount of foot traffic here regardless."

"Of course, I'm Dean Sarkozy. I represent Van Den Broek Superluminal on behalf of the Expanse branch Gravitic matter sourcing department." He says as he firmly shakes Lee's hand. "I was hoping to have a short discussion with you of an urgent matter."

"Um, okay." Lee says. "We have an appointment in a few hours so it will have to be quick."

"Very quick, of course." Dean says as he slides the main door closed behind him. "To be specific, it's about Telarum. I'm not sure what the Hive calls it."

"They don't.... use words, really." Lee says slowly.

"Well, we understand the situation is... escalating rather quickly." He says. "Now, my superiors understand and fully accept the legitimate claims of sovereignty made by the Hive over the region, however, there are a number of issues that will naturally arise during the inevitable political transfer, especially on Calpamos and in the Telarum system. Now, you understand, I presume, that Telarum holds a rather sizeable quantity of canderon, much of which has been churned into the chronosphere by the stars' unusual rotation and proximity to one another. Now, it is true that the mining process is made more dangerous by this phenomenon, but with modern automation, the local richness still makes the system quite economically viable for stellar mining."

"Right, not a big secret." Lee says, somewhat uninterested as he looks for some catch.

"Well, we understand you have spoken with the banking clans regarding Tannhauser, and given that Telarum is lacking even the most hostile potential colony, we see no potential harm to Hive domestic interests if-"

"I get the point, get to the offer, please." Lee says as he waves his hand with impatience. Dean seems to almost bow his head.

>>

No, first we should find out the competing offer from their rival corporation, Krasnikov Interstellar.

Also, of course, there will be a strict demilitarization of any stations in the system. And we'll demand to be permitted through scans and investigation of all the equipment and stuff that they keep, to make sure none of them are weapons.

So we can secretly reverse engineer the star drills.

It's mined out of stars taking advantage of a slave race that is able to live on the surface of stars. I think it's only specific stars, maybe neutron.
>>
>>1396306
Yes. You mine it from stars... Been the case since canderon was introduced to us.
>>
>>1396309
We should at least see what the current baseline is.

Either we set agents on corporate espionage to steal the star drill plans, which would probably require the new Espionage Crunch system that's coming...uh....any day now, I'm sure.

Or we capture the star drills at Telarum and reverse engineer them somehow. Either with or without the corporations' consent.

"Van Den Broeck would be willing to pay, in any form you may wish, for the right to remain within Telarum. As for Calpamos, it is currently our primary source of supplies. Food for employees, replacement components for equipment, and shipyard repair services for our ships and mining rigs, as well as a branch office where we organize operations and host employees during off hours. The station itself is a subsidiary of numerous conglomerate corporations and is largely owned by banking clan ventures, but if you would permit our employees to remain in the system we would be willing to buy out the assets of any company you would force to leave in order to support our efforts, and we would be more than willing to pay any taxes and tariffs as you deem necessary." He glances about the embassy as Lee and him walk their way into one of the side offices where workers lay out the fine strips of neuro-cable along the fine film of flesh covering the walls in an eggshell white that shifts its colors as if the room were floating within a passing cloud.

"Now, our sales team recommended that if the Hive finds no real desire in the energy credit of modern interstellar economic activity, we would be more than willing to either adopt your native currency or pay in percentages of Canderon, or shares of our public traded company and stock options in our numerous subsidiaries."

Several workers hang from one another from the upper levels of your embassy as they adjust the finishing touches of the outer walls when you hear some commotion down the small street.

"No, I know exactly who did it but apparently it's the one spot without a security camera!" Someone says. A man in a striped suit stumbles out of the ally as he shakes the dirt off of his jacket as several guards follow behind. "

"I'm sorry sir but if you'd like to file a complaint-"

"I'm already late! Never mind it!" The man snaps as he begins to rush down the street to your embassy. He quickly straightens his hair and adjusts his suit as he reaches for the door, only to find it has been locked.

"That bastard Sarkozy, I hope a razor trout swims up his toilet tonight." He mutters and begins to knock firmly. Within your embassy, Dean quickly shuts the door to the office as the door in the main entrance down the hall rattles loudly.

"Ah, sounds like you're still doing construction." He says suddenly. "It really is some magnificent architecture."

A Krasnikov Interstellar representative I'm assuming? They do operate star drills in the Telarum as well.
Either way, see him in and let the Business Speaker take care of him in another office while Lee continues (we can play off their competing offers without them being in the same room).
>>
>>1396429
If the god damn Wolf system description was in the pastebin i would be.
How do the star people mine Canderon?
>>
>>1396422
I know they're not related anon, I just forgot about them myself and felt it worth stating.
Also, that's a good idea.
>>
We can buy Canderon from these guys, but there are other things of value they could offer.

I wonder if they could give the hive sugar or other appropriate nutrients in massive quantities in exchange for being allowed to continue mining operations in the system. We may be able to get a very substantial nutrient boost from this. (if they offer an absurdly large enough amount of food).
>>
>>1396445
Canderon is the only thing of value that can't be easily produced elsewhere. The entire human farming industrial complex would be physically incapable of offering enough spare nutrients (that doesn't go to feeding humans) to be worth taking instead of Canderon.

>>1396324
A speaker scurries over to the door, quickly unlocking and opening it as the human on the other side nearly falls in. He lets out a startled shout as he leads in to his greeting.

"Ah... hello..." He says Your speaker examines the Union designed door as the human enters. "I'm Hugo Torres, assistant executive of Krasnikov Interstellar legal acquisitions department, I was hoping to speak with a representative here regarding the Telarum system." He says as he looks to your drone. The drone simply returns a blank stare, then back to the door.

"Human doors are not sufficient. Too loose and noisy." Your drone chirps. Torres looks at your drone with confusion as several workers fall from the upper levels to the street outside and begin ripping into the door with their mandibles.

"I... um was hoping to get in whenever you have time for a meeting but if you need me to make an appointment."

"Please follow." Your speaker says as it's claw grabs him by the arm and leads him down the hall to a small waiting room. A large drone rushes through the main entrance hall as he leaves, obliterating several desks and demolishing three walls as it rushes by like a freight train and then retreats back into the compact hive of the courtyard. Torres jumps forward several feet as your drone leads him into the waiting room and a chitinous chair walks up to him, planting itself beside him expectantly. He takes a seat as he looks back at the speaker.

"It will be a moment." Your drone chirps, and it becomes motionless. He looks about the room cautiously.

"Are you.... going to get anyone or..." He trails off as your drone chitters softly in the corner facing him with a blank look of disinterest.

"It will be a moment."

Lee stands next to Dean as he pulls out a number of plastic sheets of smart paper as they begin filling with documents regarding mining yield studies and cost estimates as Lee's mind is alerted to the new visitor.

Each human requires approximately 30 nutrients per day and there are tens of billions of humans.

"As you can see, we already have much of the infrastructure established and with our current estimates we are expecting the location to be exceptionally rich well into the foreseeable future." Dean says as the door to the main hall opens. Your speaker walks through as Torres steps over several pieces of shredded furniture and discarded debris as dozens of workers scrub at the floors.

"Sarkozy." Hugo says flatly.

"Torres." Dean replies. "You got here quick. You've got a bit of dirt on your suit." He adds with a smirk. Torres glairs back at him as he pulls out his own pages of smart paper and several holoprojectors.

"Representative Lee, it is an honor." He says as he shakes Lee's hand.

"Will the both of your please take a seat." Lee says simply, and falls back in the air as a haptic hologram catches him. It floats back as a table forms in front of him, glowing a neon red as swirls of Skyl script characters form and dissipate faintly within the bands of hardlight. The two businessmen touch the table hesitantly before placing their papers on it, and they examine the space behind them, squatting down awkwardly until a pair of seats form from the air.

"Alright, so let me get this all straight." Lee says. "You want to either stay in or be given the right to buy out the Calpamos station as a base for your mining rigs in Telarum, and you want the exclusive rights to mine the system and export back to the Union?" Lee asks. "And I say exclusive because otherwise you wouldn't be fighting to get here first."

"That would be correct." Dean says simply.

"Not entirely." Torres adds. "My superiors at Krasnikov are hoping to enter into a larger market than simply exporting Canderon back into Union and Valen space. We understand the Hive has a rather expansive authority over the region and is on moderately good terms with a number of interstellar entities otherwise hostile to the Union itself. This is also the main reason I was hoping to speak with you... alone." Torres says.

Before accepting trade deals we should try and figure out what we want. What we want, we usually just take. The expanse for instance.
>>
>>1396618
"You can't sell to the Commonwealth, even if they'd let you." Dean says as he turns back to Lee. "I'm sure you know of the many painfully obtuse regulations and limitations on trade in and out of the Commonwealth. It's limited to smuggling routes almost exclusively, and that's even if the Union didn't have such strict sanctions against them."

"Not for entities headquartered within foreign space." Torres says quickly. "Again, I was hoping to speak with you alone but this proposal is entirely above board for all parties involved. Krasnikov is not simply interested in purchasing mining rights for the canderon within Telarum, but it is interested in establishing a canderon extraction subsidiary licensed and headquartered within Hive space, under whatever relevant laws you may have regarding such organizations. Judging by the gravitational distortions of the local hive fleet in orbit, or lack thereof, we assume that your ships, like the valen, do not rely on canderon for your FTL to function. Because of this instead of offering percentage shares of canderon, we would be willing to provide for you a service as a bulk middleman for extracting, refining, and exporting the canderon reserves within hive space to any you wish to have an open trade agreement with." He hands Lee a number of sheets of smart paper. "Of course, the hive would receive bulk discounts and the rights to purchase any and all refined canderon prior to export, but this way you won't have any excess stockpiles wasting space while still granting you fill access to all canderon sources within your systems, starting with Telarum and, if you find the arrangement beneficial, potentially beyond if possible." Dean shifts his weight, his seat dipping slightly as he leans in.

"This plan is entirely unfeasible. The number of individual and conflicting political arrangements would be entirely unrealistic. The Union Space Forces, and the Union itself would offer trade benefits and decreased or even negligible tariffs if they knew the canderon within your space was going entirely to the Union economy, and those of its allies."

"That would be true if the Union held anything close to a decent hand in the Expanse negotiations." Torres replies, still facing Lee." And beyond the Commonwealth there are all manner of untold possibilities regarding trade with foreign powers the Hive has managed to open trade with, even beyond those known or accepted by Humanity at large."

>this way you won't have any excess stockpiles wasting space while still granting you fill access to all canderon sources within your systems,

He talks about stockpiles like it's a bad thing. And 'discount' but we'd still pay for it. His deal sucks. Canderon percentage is better.

Mining it all ourselves would be better still though.
>>
>>1396653
This tell us that they think the union going to fold on the expanse

They want a deal with us pronto
>>
>>1396654
Now now, let's wait for him to tell us the exact discount.
>>
>>1396647
I don't think we should admit we don't know how to use star drills. It puts us on a lesser bargaining level.

We should mask our acquisition of star drill tech as demanding the blueprints to Calpamos station and 'all ships stations and technology to be stationed in at Telarum'.
>>

> - even beyond those known or accepted by Humanity at large."

Sure seems like they're ready to trade with Unity
>>
>>1396658
The other guy's discount is 100%, anon.
>>
So it looks like what we want in the negotiation is:

1. Star people to experiment on.
2. Mining equipment to study
3. Percentage of total mining output and sovereignty in local space.
4. Possible sale/negotiation with Theseus.

Anyone have something they want to add?
>>
>>1396640
You know I'm not sold on either of their proposals. In either case we stand to gain a greater share by learning how to build our own star drills from the Unity and mining the Canderon ourselves.

These guys have the same fundamental problem as the Valen's bid to mine Tannhauser, they have nothing to offer us but possible good will with local trading networks outside of the hive, and those trade networks can't bring us anything we can't make ourselves.
>>
>>1396662
If we do this we should also negotiate for the right to oversee the construction and any retrofits/maintenance with a drone presence, we can write it off as a security measure and keeping peace in our space from infiltrators. Gets us closer and is in our MO
>>
>>1396527

>>
>>1396669
We not going to get star people thru them
That would cause a shitstorm

We have to send a someone ourselves tothe star people do it

They want the ability to live on other stars right? we offer a deal about making it possible for them to live on other stars since that what the union deal with them is in exchange for the cald
>>
>>1396670
Ideas anon. Creativity is still our greatest weakness.
>>
>>1396670
Yes, although we can just conquer Telarum and take the star drills right now by force.

Actually, as condition to negotiations, first we should have our 'inspection run'.

We aren't going to consider any deals before we investigate the current setup of their star mining to see if either is satisfactory.

Then there'd be no promise broken if we decided, actually, we won't take either deal, thank you for your offers.

Although we can act as middleman to sell Canderon to Theseus I guess. if they don't get Telarum.
>>
>>1396640
Well Torres is the man. Really only the inefficient human door was stopping him from his progress.
>>
>>1396640
"The maniacs at Krasnikov can't possibly want to sell refined canderon to the Unity!" dean says.

"Of course not!" Torres replies. "Krasnikov Interstellar is a Union company which is dedicated to employing over two million Union citizens and supporting the last bastion of human democratic liberal civilization left in the universe, and as such are entirely bound to Union trade law. Any corporation founded within alien jurisdiction whose governing entity has not signed any of the Toliman treaties or other such interstellar regulations, however, has no such legal obligation." He taps the smart paper as it lights up to show a number of star drills and their optimal orbits within the Telarum system a slight smile grows across his face. "As I said, entirely above board in every way for all parties involved."

"That's insane, you can't sell to every party in a three way war like that!" Dean says, and quickly turns to Lee. "I am sure you know full well such a plan would create all manner of diplomatic issues with trade agreements with just about everyone in known space."

"Don't worry, we are also prepared to give you a generous offer to purchase your mining equipment in the system as well. And your offices in Calpamos station, we plan on expanding a bit." Torres says as he glairs to Dean beside him.

Inspections to make sure they don't mistreat their workers and or use sub par equipment is pretty basic.

We push Dean to give better offer, but I got feel we are more interested of accepting Torres offer as they are right now.

>>1396682
"The Hive will require an extensive examination of all installations within Hive space." your speaker chirps.

"Of course, we would be more than happy to give you a full tour of our facilities." Torres says, Dean echoes the statement. You sense the statement makes them nervous. They seem to sense some kind of hesitation in your request, as if they believe you are stalling or seeking excuses to deny their request, then their minds quickly leap to blaming the other for such a potential outcome, and the fear of immediate unemployment. Their minds slowly ebb into a deliberate static of concentration. You recognize the tactic, but it is far less potent than that of the Valen representative, as memories of the seminar in which they learned the mental trickery fade in and out of their minds sporadically mixed with images of their own briefings on the assignment. The maws of several valen flash by, as seen from the front of holographic personnel files, the valen you ate dinner with just the other night, with various broken memories of studying private communiques to and from the high ranking aliens, gathered by the two mega corporations through either bribery or espionage, or some combination.

All in all, the more they seem to hide from your mind, the more of their motivation to do so bleeds to the surface in shattered, muffled shards of thought, like something swimming just beneath the surface of a murky pond, and the thoughts are gone again.

Question them of their hidden motivations. The hive is very very blunt by all accounts. We can hear what they are thinking anyway so it would be the more polite option for them to just be forth coming. The two of them are the first humans to ever stand to make real negotiations with us in union space after all. They aught to build the right for us to trust them

>Whatever we do, lets pick one of them, we are not pussyfooting out of this like in Valen meeting.

No. Delaying the Valen meeting made sense. We came up with better reasons to accept the deal later.

Also, neither of their deals are worth giving up mining Canderon ourselves.

We can have a separate deal, without Telarum involved, letting Krasnikov setup a subsidiary under hive law and paying taxes in Canderon maybe. But it would be inefficient to let humans mine our Canderon, but admitting we're rejecting them right now is less useful than stringing them along.
>>
>>1396814
Just because we let the humans mine doesn't mean we're offering "exclusive" mining rights. We can let the humans mine and mine it ourselves too...
>>
>>1396812
I'm pretty sure in the Psionic reading description it said there's a chance the target detects the reading, it didn't specify if humans can or cannot but it's better to be on the safe side and assume they can.

You bring the matter to Theseus's attention with a quick mental ping, and it is returned in kind as you send a quick mental data packet to bring him up to speed on the situation.

"The proposal is surprising." He says. "However it would provide both a sufficient method of canderon reserve regeneration in the wake of recent heavy losses while providing a potential open communications link into human space through which a more amicable status quo could potentially be achieved."

"You would agree to purchase regular supplies of bulk canderon?" You ask, he offers a ping in confirmation.

"Yes. Payment can be rendered in laundered credits, crypto-currency, bulk shipments of mass produced goods or raw materials made to specifications on demand, and should they accept it, mass cloud computing services for calculations of complex anti-particle research often required by corporations involved in exotic matter extraction and production."

hes being "upfront" at this point his deal is about the one star if we have other places where we can use our own tech to mine it ourselves but in the end we dont need candaron. how much better of a deal do we want? we already get
100% buy out
full acceptance on terifs
full unilateral access to their facilities already in the system

the only way to make that deal any more usurious in our favor was to leave us with the ability to set the price of all candaron exported.

he thinks he can use it as a spring board to sell directly to the unity and commonwealth using us as a cover. We can simply agree to his deal and then claim we did not understand his elbow jabs and twitching eyelid as anything other then an unfortunate lack of proper medical science in the union. possibly even a side effect of having to few hearts.
>>

>>Have Lee speak with Torres alone

>>
>>1396932
Singularity projectors are sweet, and dovetail extremely well with gravity thrusters on the surrounding fleet. Canderon is very useful to put on battleships and hive ships.

"buyout" is still another way of saying "you have to pay for the Canderon". The other guy gives us Canderon for free. And the other guy also allows access to his stations and accepts hive imposed tariffs. None of those are really that special.

And we can make the deal better by instead trading star drill technology for incorporating their subsidiary. That would, yeah, allows us to set the price of all Canderon exported, because we're the ones mining it and exporting it if we ever need credits for something.
>>
>>1396932
>hes being "upfront" at this point his deal is about the one star if we have other places where we can use our own tech to mine it ourselves

Both of them are making a deal about this one star. They're both quite open about what they want.

He's just a little more ambitious because he hopes we'll also sell him other stars for him to mine instead of us doing it.

Lee looks over the sheets of smart paper for some time as his thoughts and yours take note of the various details of the proposed plan. It seems promising, and Theseus is willing to agree on his end, but you have questions, and you would prefer the answers not be given to your new partner's largest rival.

"I think we should speak more on this privately." Lee says and he turns to Dean. "We'll be sure to get back to you when we can."

"But sir, I really think if you'd just let me-"

"Don't call us, we'll call you." Lee says, and Dean's seat begins to float out the door as he struggles to dig his feet into the floor. Another speaker quickly arrives and helps him up.

"Please move feet more quickly. The Hive will likely not contact you, that was a human expression to show politeness but was inaccurate."

"But, I could come back? Or after your meeting... I can wait outside for when you have a spare moment?" Dean says quickly as he gathers his things. Your speaker chitters back.

"You may wait. The street is public property." The door to the room opens to a well polished tile floor as workers rush back and forth, carving ornate designs lifted from ancient Ralighan, Skyl, and Phantom designs depicting various Hive-influenced events of legend, and as the speaker escorts him out of the freshly built doorway seven workers march forth with a massive, eight foot chitinous door and slide it into place with a loud, reverberating thud as the door's apatrue grips the frame and its muscles begin to anchor themselves into the wall.

"Now, mister Torres." Lee says quickly. "I'd say the Hive is rather interested in your offer but that's just my observation. What would be the kind of income we would be seeing from this?"

"We would pay any tax you deemed fair, of course, so long as it remains economically viable to run. We would like to request work visas for experienced labor if that's a requirement you have, but should humans choose to remain in your space after the move we will attempt to hire locally. In light of this, we will be encouraging our current employees to remain in Hive space. I would only request you keep in mind we will be offering some rather extreme above-market salaries to help encourage the more skilled engineers to remain when you set your tax and tariffs, and whatever other fees you may require for legal corporate activity."

"And the discount you're offering?" Lee asks.

"At cost. The money paid would largely be taken out of the profits given to you, so depending on how much you choose to purchase you could consider it to be a fractional compensation in credits or canderon. We would prefer to deal in credits as opposed to some other form of currency stand-in, but everything is negotiable."

how? I mean ya once we have the tech, which we will have by taking the system anyway, we can then grow better tech. Outside of that we are getting more out of making a deal on the social end then from the Canderon. We get to show Theseus working as a free willed scentient buissness partner and we show ourselves being willing to work with the woefully inferior and inefficient lesser races. ultimately becoming everyone in the unions favorite aunt.

We can allow the incorporation of a subsidiary that trades with Theseus, gaining the social benefits, without giving up the star system.

"So what exactly are your interests with the Unity?" Lee asks. "This seems to have come out of nowhere."

"Out of nowhere indeed." He replies. The footage was grainy and terrible quality, but we both know that the Hive has worked with the Unity on joint military ventures against Union facilities on at least one occasion, even beyond the minor trade agreements illuded to by the Hive Speaker on your first arrival. Unity technology needs canderon just as much as human tech does, much of it is based on human tech in the first place, and we know now it's lost at least one server ship. Those things cost a lot of canderon, so the Unity is going to be hungry for it, and after the Union drove them back from Telarum, even taking out a server ship at Juric, I doubt the Unity has much in the way of easy access to a proper source." He adjusts the images of the smart paper again, showing estimations of the statistics of a Server ship of various classifications, specifically the estimations of how much canderon its various known systems are beleived to require.

"Two lost ships at least, with no source. That creates demand. Normally we would be rather hesitant to sell to an entity hostile to human life, but your comments regarding the Unity's amiability when you first arrived made us curious with just how accurate the modern depiction of the Unity is."

ya that's because the Valen are such space jews. and all intelligent life is psionic to some degree minus our mothers blinding, so the fact that they caught on is mad props to human ingenuity and gumption.
I would be interested in learning if the sunbros are psionic since outside of Mom blinding the humans and Theseus being a product of human tech they thought that it was a prerequisite to sentience.
>>
>>1397146
>all intelligent life is psionic to some degree minus our mothers blinding

No. This has been corrected multiple times now. Psionic life is just more common than you'd expect. Protohumans were psionic. Valen apparently are slightly psionic. Taidarens, Ralighans, unmodified Skyl, they aren't at all. Their brains can't transmit tachyons.
>>
>>1397151
The unmodified skyl were non-sentient lizardbirds. and tidarens do have their triplet link thing which I thought had a psionic component. ralighans are the only ones that wouldn't fit, but would they even be considered truly sentient. communal and social sure, but so are prairie dogs.
>>
>>1397168
>but would they even be considered truly sentient
Nigger they make weapons and have an oral tradition that goes back hundreds if not thousands of years. They're people in every way

Your speaker looks into him, his mind unfolding as you pry at his thoughts. Lee grimaces as his mind feels the slow, pulsing flow of your mental signal gripping the room, the sensation creating a low humming buzz in his inner ear as his eyes stutter, making the room seem as if it were shaking.

"This deal could make or break this company as the dominant canderon distributor for the foreseeable future." The man speaking is incredibly old, his voice synthetic as it emanates from the speakers beside the medical tank. His body is shriveled and skeletal with only a few strands of hair left on his head. His eyes are artificial, and watch Torres with unwavering intelligence entirely unfitting to the rest of his appearance. His gaze is almost physically felt, as if at any moment he could step out of the tank and attack, even as the tank itself is projected from some distant starship orbiting the local star at some fraction of light speed.

"Yes, Mr. Krasnikov. I understand fully. I've read the reports provided. In the short time available I believe we have assembled an excellent plan." The room is silent for a long time as the hologram flickers slowly as it waits for the complete response to arrive.

"I have read the plan and approve, but the time scale has proven too small for me to provide direct oversight. You will hold the responsibility for this, be it fortune or failure. You will lead this foray into uncharted space, and you will either reap its rewards, or you will fall on your own sword."

"Yes sir." Torres says quickly, and after another wait, the hologram ends, and the lights of the room come back on. He lets out a deep breath he only now realizes he was holding this entire time, and looks down at the intel files. "Are we sure this intel is good?" He asks the room.

"There's no telling with Valen, but this has them spooked real bad this time." Someone says, one of the intel team's managers. Torres can't recall his name, but he recalls he is an ex-sec-comm agent, and more often than not, while he gets the job done, he refuses to report how. When you get to a certain level of administration, there are things below your pay grade that you do better to not know. How his team gathers the data they do is often one of those things.

"Are you aware of any limitation in their psionics?" You ask as a worker scurries up to help her lift herself from the nest of cloth. "Any kind of life they cannot detect?"

"No True life is entirely undetectable." She says with a hint of dismissal. "That is why they are alive." Your minds attempt to clarify the meanings and concepts. The genetic data and its specific architecture and composite materials, the definition of life. The Barren Queen looks at your speaker in momentary confusion as you reach a corrected agreement on concepts.

"Carbon life, made from the genetic material we use, yes. That is life." She says. "These silicates, they are not. A star changes, lives and dies, but it is not life. These things are simply complex stones." She says firmly. "They have no thoughts to hear. Psionic signals pass them by without note."

You are unsure by how much, but it does seem that psionic sensitivity in one way or another is actually less uncommon than you at first believed. The Humans and Phantoms seem proof at least that psionic sensitivity can develop in nature.

It is that if it something that our biotech can understand easy and recreate then it can influenced by psi,
it is possible for it to be able to use psi with some work done if it they cant naturally do it as we saw with the nanites on Elizabeth or just stuffing that thing into lee

So Taidarens, Ralighans, unmodified Skyl are psionic since they can be affected, they just cant use it

"So these aliens have the highest ranking Valen in known space chanting warding songs to fend off spirits after one dinner with them." Torres says as he reads the file.

"All we can know for sure is these aliens have a similar empathy as the Valen, but far stronger. According to the files, it was said they could 'speak' as it were. Given valen empathy is often referred to as Hearing..."

"Do we know how?"

"Not even close." The man says. "There are theories. Some kind of mix of subsonic frequencies and EM emissions maybe, but if the valen translation offers any accurate analogy, they seem to hold the ability to hold some kind of mental influence. It's possible the method in which they communicate is capable of working to a more limited degree on alien life."

"So valen read minds, these things control them?"

"We know at least two humans jumped ship and are working with them. The others reported gaps in their memory and strange dreams." The man says. "It's not out of the question, although it's doubtful that even if they can that they can pull it off immediately. I've assembled an itinerary for you that will keep you as far from their embassy as possible until the moment before you arrive."

"What about Van Den Broek?"

"They at least have this same information." The man says. Their intel team's fingerprints were all over these files and if we could get them, so could they. We had an... incident, we think our field team made contact with theirs. It got a bit messy but-"

"I don't want to know." Torres says. "I just want to know if we have any defence against these things."

"Other than mental blocks, no. I'll have a team on the ground not far from the embassy, but even we won't be able to get you out if things go sideways." Torres stands over the table, his hands on either side of the pile of files and notes. There is so much, but it amounts to so little. Much of it is classified government files, others private data logs from high level valen. In all, this inch thick stack of paper was likely worth nearly seven million credits in total, between the bribes and untold criminal acts, he would likely never no its true value, but right now it didn't feel like any of it amounted to anything.

"It feels like we know less about them now than we did when the Clark crew was first rescued." He says. "I've already got a mail runner standing by, I'll be on Gemini by this evening. Keep me up to date on all pertinent information as it becomes available." The room begins to blur, the walls disintegrating into an amorphous blob of incoherent thought before it seeks the shape and form of a new memory.

Torres is at the starport as he makes his way through the private boarding bay. The endless noise of riots and the explosions of fireworks and flashbanks echo endlessly against the skyline. A detail of armed guards march close to either side as he quickly makes his way to the exit of the building where an air car waits on the curb. The guards stop at the street, only two of them entering with him as he clicks the contact on his earpiece.

"Yes?" He says, and he quickly waves impatiently to the driver, a pale Ceph covered in various rather painful looking tattoos carved into its delicate skin. It lifts the car into the air with grace as Torres continues to focus on his call.

"They did what?" He shouts, then glances to the pilot. "Skip the hotel, we're flying straight to the embassy! Goddamnit!" He shouts. The ceph pulls the car to the side and it skims meters from a building as it hurls itself the other way.

"We can pay for the tickets, get us there now, traffic laws are now suggestions." Torres says, his finger held over the microphone of his earpiece, then pushes it back into his ear. "Yes I'm heading there now get your team ready... I know but you can at least monitor the outside... right, just get your team into position and I'll call you once I'm done." He clicks the contact and pulls out the earpiece, quickly pocketing it as the aircar begins to drift in over the Capital district. It is hardly on the ground when he leaps out of the doors, his guards standing by as he rushes off towards the embassy street from the Parliament building's visitor parking lot. He rounds the corner when he feels something impact his leg and he tumbles, his feet scrambling to right himself until he plows face first into a rose garden along the side of the walkway. He glimpses the faintest hint of a well dressed man smirking from around the corner before he realizes he is half buried in the compost.

He scrambles to get up in the soft dirt until a pair of patrolling PDF troopers hoist him out of the flowerbed by his shoulders, asking if he is okay, but the words are muted to him as he already begins to sprint ahead, scrambling forward as the strange, alien architecture of the Hive embassy comes into view, and the door slams shut at the front.

Torres's eyes slowly regain their focus, the dilation returning to normal. He blinks several times, his eyes watery as if he had held them open for several minutes.

"So we consider this to be as much a learning experience as any outright attempt to make money. I hope the arrangements are to your satisfaction. Do you have any questions?" He says, his mind a fog. He seems to look down at his hand, confused at the small crimson dot on the back of his hand and the faint taste of copper. He reaches up to his lip to feel the blood running from his nose and quickly reaches for a small napkin from his pocket.

"My apologies." He says quickly. "It's, uh... I had a rather rushed flight. High flying air cars and the like."

You find nothing worth while enough to start a new research project, but at the very least you may be able to gain some understanding of the recent advancements made by their forces, and a moderate amount of scrap metal.
The scav's exosuits are just a cheep knockoff of the Confederacy's exosuits, nothing particularly new or useful for us there I'm afraid.

Although while we're on the topic of scav tech we really do need to recover an intact skitter drive or whatever they called them. And what I really want to know is who the scavs stole them from, there's no way they invented them on their own.

I've been thinking about the upcoming news broadcast.

What do you guys think of having our humanoid Queen "illusion" make an appearance via hologram and speak for herself? She'd certainly be more eloquent than our speakers. Or we could have Elizabeth make an appearance via hologram if she wishes as well.

Even if we don't bring the Queen or Elizabeth here via remote link we still have holograms everywhere that can be easily used to demonstrate concepts and history that our speakers may have trouble putting into words. This could be very useful to us. For example, we can show images of the Rhaligeans, the Ark-ship, Lyle attacking our drones, or the like. We can also use our mind reading to get a list of the interviewer's questions ahead of time so we'll be better prepared.
>>
>>1398719

>>
>>1398719
>What do you guys think of having our humanoid Queen "illusion" make an appearance
The answer is no. That only makes us less popular because that shit only works when it's a hallucination.
>>
>>1398755
We can't make an imaginary image of the queen using a holo-projector? I'm not sure why that would be.

Hell, I'd be fine with using an actual image of the Queen (provided it's cleaned up a bit) as the hologram. I mostly just think that this is an instance where having the Queen herself talk would be of more benefit than leaving it to the speakers.
>>
>>1398719
>What do you guys think of having our humanoid Queen "illusion" make an appearance
NOPE we are not going to do that
>>
>>1398771
When I say it only work when its a hallucination I mean it only looks good if they are being mindraped.
>>
>>1398719
If the Queen appears, it would be strange for her to appear as the humanoid illusion that Lyle sees her as. I could support the Queen appearing as a hologram, and using... well... digital speakers to speak on behalf of the Hive, since the Queen has no capacity to form words and they've already seen sketches of the Queen, so might as well appear in all royal glory.

As far as Elizabeth goes, only if they ask about her, and only if she wants. Having her appear would only lend credence to the theory that we basically kidnapped and mind-controlled her. Besides, the Union population doesn't think highly of implants and augmentations. Elizabeth's augmentations are extensive.
>>
>>1398792
If you say so...

We could still project an image of the actual queen or Elizabeth. I'm just trying to think of the most effective way to get an advocate here that's not a speaker. They're cute and funny and we all love them, but sometimes serious events call for handling situations personally.
>>
>>1398793
>it would be strange for her to appear as the humanoid illusion that Lyle sees her as
You mean the one that only looks good if only if you've been mindrape. The form I'm primarily voting against.
>>
>>1398802
Well that manifestation appeared both as a projection of the Red Queen as well as Lyle's own interpretation of her, but there's nothing stopping us from projecting that out.

Except like, I don't want to because it's strange. The Queen isn't humanoid! Let the ones with parasites figure out how they want to perceive her, but showing her like this as a humanoid is weird.
>>
>>1398831
> I don't want to because it's strange.
We're aliens, we get to be strange.

I'll concede the point, though, that we're almost certainly better off showing the Queen in her full natural royal beauty than in some kind of uncanny valley humanoid image.
>>
>>1398831
>>1398848
Having a bug on camera isn't going to make us more relatable, mostly because there is not expression or body language to read, but putting up what is essentially a chimera is a bad idea too.
How about a highly accurate human avatar "simulation" of the Queen?
>>
>>1398831
>>1398865

>>
>>1398869
I was not thinking of a realistic representation of the Queen, I was actually thinking of have a avatar which more or less represents "what if the Queen was a human".

>highly accurate human avatar
Having the queen appear as a humanoid is not desirable.

>going in to talk to bug aliens
>they say they're going to have the queen on a hologram line
>the queen was described as a big bug

And while we're talking about queens, we should probably mention that the most unthinkable crime in the last Hive generation was regicide. And that the Obsidian Queen killed hundreds.

I still think we should just show outself as the bug Queen we are, though. Possibly without our glorious royal eggsac if we don't want to freak them out too much.
>>
>>1398953
If we use holograms to communicate,it will limit the use of our speakers, who are both cute and give us some level of obfuscating stupidity.
>>
>>1398972
We can have a speaker, Lee, and the Queen's hologram all on at once. If we get angry or want to deflect we can just have the speaker interject or appear cute/stupid/threatening for us. The Queen doesn't get angry, we have people (drones) to do that for us.

I also think that we are at a level at this point where obfuscating stupidity, while fun, also has its limitations.
>>
>>1398953
If they can't appreciate the glorious royal egg sac i don't think we can be friends with them.

Or maybe they should be pitied for they are of simple mind and do not understand the glory of a large egg sac.

"While specialized technology can be used to birth new drones, a large egg sac indicates a busy queen with many children. Of all races, humans should have no problems understanding the importance of fertility symbols."

Give them a bit to chew on that's not just "bugs want to enslave you to mine sugar." Even if they make crude jokes about small egg sacs, at least it takes away from their other panicking.

Yeah, sketches of a very young version of ourselves whose role (if any) in the Hive they're currently dealing with is unclear to them.

>>1399300

>>
>>1399319
You just contradicted yourself.
>>
>>1399262
Personally I'd go with young queen rather than old one in fancy throne room because the young one (in hologram form) can move around better and the throne room might not be a suitable background for a news interview. But either works fine.
>>
>>1399334
Not really.

What we looked like then and what we look like now are dramatically different, and they still aren't certain what role Leeland and the queen there plays in the greater scheme of the Hive. It'd be pitifully easy to "accidentally" drop hints here and there over the course of our contact that Gilliam's speculations about Leeland being a nursery world for the Hive were correct, and that Lee only met children and their attendant.
>>
>>1399397
>What we looked like then and what we look like now are dramatically different.
No it isn't, at the time Lee saw us we had already extended our eggsack, we might have gained some minor details to our appearance since then but there has been no radical changes, we are still recognizable as the queen from Lee's description and sketches.
>and they still aren't certain what role Leeland and the queen there plays in the greater scheme of the Hive. It'd be pitifully easy to "accidentally" drop hints here and there over the course of our contact that Gilliam's speculations about Leeland being a nursery world for the Hive were correct, and that Lee only met children and their attendant.
That is about the nature of the Hive, not about the queen, and even then they have been getting closer to the truth.

>"Humans can get lice that lay eggs in our hair and feed on our blood. Valen have an animal almost like a coconut crab that does something similar and nests in the gills. The taidaren could be considered to actually be parasites, and despite it often being a bad idea to mistakenly compare alien life to known biology, Earth ants and other colony superorganisms all have predators that mimic a member of the collective to feed upon its other members with impunity." Palmer says. "If we scale up the concepts of biology to include the entire hive, rendering individual drones to a position more akin to organs or body cells, such a predator could be considered a parasite."
>"I know enough to start putting things together. It's not that we just don't know how the hive communicates, it's that we don't know how to detect it. I suspect they are using some manner of transmission we just don't comprehend. Given the size of their sphere of influence, it is entirely possible they have some manner of interstellar communication beyond our understanding. To them, it may very well be a kind of direct mind-to-mind communication, if it has enough bandwidth." He seems to ponder for a moment, his gloved hand rubbing his chin through the rubber of his suit. "Perhaps a kind of advanced quantum entanglement. That could explain the need for a centralized authority, if every drone or local colony is connected to the queen, they could support the cerebral offloading seen in the bodies we recovered. It could be most of their brains is dedicated to long range instant communications which functions to offload the thought process of the drone to a central command structure, a central hive brain, either a leader caste or a singular focal point of the hive itself."
>>
>>1398719
No.
>>
>>1399453
So keep the queen and thinkers hidden is even more important since they are close to the truth?

And they had one of oq thinkers samples, lets hope the thing ate it
>>
>>1399463
Keeping the Queen and most thinkers hidden is a yes, trying to keep their existence a secret is a no since we have failed at that since we let Lee go.
>>
>>1399467
They can know about the queen, but we must never give them a chance to analyses her in any way

Lee may have told them but he wouldn't be able to give any real useful details since he wasn't trained in that things , thank fuck steiner never met the queen
>>
>>1399484
Have we ever read lee's description of the Red queen? I know he was a genius in strategy at the officer school but got demoted cause he wouldn't clean his room, he might surprise us with how much detail is in the description so we better check.
>>
What info would the Human's get out of seeing the Queen compared to seeing any other drone? The Queen is special only it its coloration and has unique mandibles/blades.
>>
>>1399467
Just because we're not keeping the simple existence of the queen top secret knowledge to be defended at all costs doesn't mean it's a smart idea to go broadcasting that knowledge across the most widely watched human TV network at it's busiest hour. It's better if no one is entirely sure we actively command the hive or even exist. So let's stick to using proxies to communicate for the hive.
>>
>>1400287
>It's better if no one is entirely sure we actively command the hive or even exist.
But Lee talked about meeting the queen, they know we exist and, depending on how Lee described us, suspect we fulfill the leadership role.
The only ones who will not know we exist is the crazies and the ones who never really paid attention to Lee and the crew who returned from danger planet.
>>
>>1400320
So?

Right now we are research subject number 1 and they want every piece of info on us

Just smarter to just use lee and the speaker, we are under no obligation to just give them research material
>>
>>1400320
>depending on how Lee described us, suspect we fulfill the leadership role.
Yep, and we're far safer if we let it remain nothing more than a suspicion for as long as possible. Right now they are aware of the existence of the Queen as a specialized egg layer unit within the hive hierarchy, but they have no idea how centralized the intelligence of the hive is in that unit. For all they know it is a distributed intelligence, like the Unity, with every individual drone contributing a tiny piece to the overall sentience of the hive. And we would do well to let them keep thinking that for as long as possible.
>>
>>1400378
And the whole purpose of the speaker is to deal with stuff like this without risking the rest of the hive
>>

I don't know about you anons, but on the subject of the humans learning about the hive's structure I have thoughts to share:
>ideal scenario: they learn nothing and are left with guesswork. this is unlikely to happen.
>less ideal but acceptable scenario: they 'learn' we have a leader caste (thinkers) but the hive in general is a distributed hivemind. similar to Theseus, but most of the upper-level decision making is in the hands of the thinkers (or every instance is retarded, except for some which are simply autistic). the queen is simply a thinker/egg-layer rolled into one (albeit perhaps an especially powerful thinker), an evolutionary hold-over. any desires to protect the queen are simply pre-spaceflight instinct the hive never managed/cared to engineer out of itself.
>unacceptable scenario: they learn the hive cannot operate (or, at least, intelligently decide on nation-level action) without the queen.

So, let's get our answers ready for these inevitable questions:

>Why are you threatening us? we are a peaceful liberal yayayay people
Many reasons - some of which we cannot discuss openly but which your leaders know of. Suffice to say after a long series of blunders and insults our hand was forced by a singularly colossal mistake that necessitated our retaking the Expanse and seizing all artifacts within.

>Why is there a fleet over Gemeni?
To better help the Union understand the gravity of our concerns with their activities.

>Why are there fleets over popping up in the Expanse?
These are merely survey forces and are hardly even armed. Their purpose is to examine the impact of human influences on our territory.

>Are you invading!!!
There will be no invasion if you peacefully return the Expanse and artifacts from it to us.

>Why did you do these things!!
We already answered that question.

>Why are you conquering our Expanse!!!
We need to secure this region for the good of all sentient life in the interests of Galactic security.

>Why is Lee with you and not dead?
Because the Union kidnapped Lee and claimed he was dead to experiment with mind-reading technologies on him after the Union assassin failed in its attack on the Hive. These experiments have had a 100% mortality rate. The Hive saved Lee's life.

>What did we do to you?
To start, you invaded the Hive's territory, defiled their holy sites, hired mercenaries to kidnap Hive workers and speakers, murdered the speaker you captured, and deployed nuclear weapons on your own facility to prevent the workers from escaping. This is in addition to the aforementioned assassination attempt. However, we will not discuss the assassination attempt as the Union censors would cut off any broadcast attempt regarding that before it could send. (go into detail about other Union crimes)

>Are you invading!!
Not unless you make us.

>Lee, why did you betray the union!!
The Union really betrayed me.

>What do you mean you have deals with the unity/commonwealth?
They didn't invade our space, kill our citizens, or defile our most sacred sites. We're really quite a reasonable species. So far Unity/Commonwealth have been reasonable in return.

>We are at war with unity/CW? are you helping them invade us now?
We would be more than happy to help broker a peace accord. This conflict is beyond stupid and helps no one.

>Many reasons - some of which we cannot discuss openly but which your leaders know of. Suffice to say after a long series of blunders and insults our hand was forced by a singularly colossal mistake that necessitated our retaking the Expanse and seizing all artifacts within.

Don't mention anything about a mistake or suggest that the Union deserved this. Just say that the war that's been going on for 40 thousand Earth years has finally come back to where it started. "Through no action of your own, the Union finds itself in the middle of a very old conflict." If they ask explicitly about what happened to make us show up so suddenly, explain that "in the Union's haste for scientific progress, little thought was given to the consequences of studying the artifacts of a race that no longer lives on the planets on which you found them. These consequences range from 'deadly' to 'endangering planets, solar systems, and species.'"

>Because the Union kidnapped Lee and claimed he was dead to experiment with mind-reading technologies on him after the Union assassin failed in its attack on the Hive. These experiments have had a 100% mortality rate. The Hive saved Lee's life.

Don't mention mind-reading. Just don't specify the experiments. If they press, refuse to answer because it's not really important what they were exactly.

This is probably best left unsaid. This kind of "list of grievances" suggests that we have some kind of problem with the Union in general which, while true, does us no favors for politics. It's really petty, and threatens to get into a pissing contest where they counter with the various things we've done. Just say "the Union through no fault of their own is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Through fault of their own, some Union experiments have proven immeasurably dangerous and required intervention."

>They didn't invade our space, kill our citizens, or defile our most sacred sites. We're really quite a reasonable species. So far Unity/Commonwealth have been reasonable in return.

Don't get into the pissing match again. Just say "We recognize their sovereignty and they ours. We both wished to trade."

>We would be more than happy to help broker a peace accord. This conflict is beyond stupid and helps no one.

"We understand the reasons for your conflict, but will not interfere out of respect for martial combat. However, perhaps we could suggest delaying it for a more opportune time when we are not all in imminent peril?"

The host asking us? they know this is the most important they will ever do in there careers and will also be scared shitless about becoming bug food

And about that list of stuff you put for "What did we do to you?" That nice and all but look from the populace view

Fleet appearing over Gemini: -9999
Fleet popping up in Expanse: -9999
Seizing the expanse: -9999
Lee coming back from the dead: -+???
Union totally helpless to stop us: -9999

Nothing we say excuses this or makes us look good

And finally what is our goal in this interview? If it is to put more pressure on the union to give into our demands then we need to ratchet up there fears of us, or do we want to ease tension to a more controllable level and that means downplaying our threat level

We aren't going to make friends today and will be navigating a minefield to accomplish things, with many times us being on the defense if anons dont want to be upping or threat level
>>
Now that I think of it wouldn't the best thing to say on QNN if we came out in support of the Greens is to say they remind us of the Gardener hive who, in human terms, is the equilevent of an Aunt.
>>
>>1402434
Us coming out openly in support of the Greens would be the most effective way for us to ensure, straight of military intervention, that the Greens lose the election badly.
>>
>>1402451
I think he is trolling diplomacy anons in general
>>
>>1402423

I really don't know why we're keeping the fleet over Gemini anymore. Our statement has been made, and now we've got other fleets elsewhere to exert pressure.

As a matter of theatrics and flair, we could maneuver the interviewer into asking our fleet to leave. Then we could make it leave. I feel like that would do a lot to help this whole situation.
>>
>>1402474
No, not tell we get then expanse i think

We raised the stake way to high for the politic class, our fleet over Gemini gives them a way to save face and say that they had no choice, that they didnt sell out humanity etc, we need to give them that to protect themselves from the public while also pressuring them
>>
>>1402490
The trade deals that we have failed to materialize were supposed to take care of that. For instance, the trade deal we just turned down would've made for EXCELLENT PR.

Instead I'm sure that fucker's going to sabotage the interview and tell everyone that we've agreed to sell Canderon to the Commonwealth and the Unity. Come the fuck on.

That was our chance to show we were legitimate and honest about being an impartial party, and we blew it.
>>
>>1402517
We could always invite him back in and wipe those memories.
>>
>>1402517
But anon, what could be more impartial than selling to everyone? We're not selling to JUST the Unity and Commonwealth, but to the Unity, Commonwealth, Union, and any other polity that is likely to pop up. Hell, I bet we'd even sell to the Scavs if they had the sense to surrender.

No mercy for the OQ though. Bitch is a dead bug walking. We need to do some more scouting and see if we can find her capitol world, then do an immolator decap strike with the rip drive and suicide pods.
>>
>>1402517

I dont think revealing that will help us right now, it was two of the most powerful megacorps in the union begging us for scraps and admitting that the union has no chance of winning

It would have pissed people off that there leadership is betraying them for material gain aka outsourcing etc
>>
>>1402549
Now that I think of it we'll primarily be selling to Unity and we have admitted that we have trade agreements with them. We could perhaps tell them that Unity is "paying quite a sum" for the chance to have peaceful contact with the Union.
>>
>>1402601
We could try that.

Another Anon had mentioned us using this mega-corp to try and get an "in" at a medical/healthcare company. I think that would be a solid way of leveraging our most valuable assets (our biotech)
>>
>>1402549
>Hell, I bet we'd even sell to the Scavs if they had the sense to surrender.
And thinking about this more. The only reason this has happened is because we're attacking the wrong targets. We need to target their commander caste and capture them.
>>
>>1402629
*hasn't happened
>>
>>1402628
That is a great idea, though we'd have to share enough of the tech with the corp's own R&D or their contact's R&D to get positive PR out there. And we can't be using this as an excuse to parasite or symbiote everyone.

That can come later once we're trusted. But by the time that happens, it probably won't be necessary, and might even be done on a voluntary basis.
>>
I think we should definitely try to de-escalate. Try to get the Union to understand that we are not an enemy, nor do we particularly wish to be their enemy. Instead of "bad human look at what you did!" perhaps we should take a different approach along the lines of "well it's a good time we got to you when we did. After all, your race has only managed to destroy only one moon, and not even a whole biosphere yet, so relative to the older Hives and the Skyl and the other races, you're actually not doing so bad, just try not to play around with dangerous trash thinking that it's going to get you somewhere."

We should emphasize that we're not trying to destroy them, have no interest in directly ruling other sentient races, and would rather grow, nurture, and protect them from external threats as well as themselves. We wouldn't consume an entire biosphere despite being capable of doing so, because that would be counterproductive to attempting to protect and conserve it. While we can eat meat, it would need to be processed, as Hive life doesn't generally digest anything besides simple sugars. Less digestion, more efficient metabolism. Less food diversity, more adaptability.

Why would we want to enslave humanity, their best qualities only come out when they are NOT enslaved, so that kind of defeats the purpose? Also much blood of the last generation of hives was spent fighting against slavery, so it's just bad in principle.

That said, there's a bit of a caveat here, what with the whole "dire straits" and "being in immediate danger from a powerful enemy that's had a very very very long head start" which puts us in the unfortunate position of needing to use the Expanse to grow fleets large enough to fight back.

Regarding Unity: if the Union wants peace or an open dialogue, we can provide it. They've never had a third party to do it until now, and if they want to stop living in fear of their own creation, they must confront it. It's not the first time a biological race has created a synthetic one, so they should stop cowering in fear of it (in before the Hive created the Void).

Regarding the Commonwealth: it would be hypocritical of us to berate Humanity for making war on itself, but if they desire peace, we would be happy to arrange a dialogue.
>>
>>1402804

You know, we could try being honest.

>Why do you have a fleet over Gemini?! Are you invading??
"Our observations indicate that your leaders are unlikely to take a course of action that avoids open war unless confronted with overwhelming force. We wish to avoid war against your people, and so have taken action that would seem to reduce its likelihood."
>>
>>1402804
Best plan in the long run
>>
>>1402804
I agree with the principle of de-escalation. We are an immediate existential threat. So far we have been entirely vague about what we want and why, only making demands against which the humans will be judged. Explaining ourself and our methods, even in part, will go a ways towards "humanizing" us in a way that makes us less intimidating.

Perhaps we should send (most of) our fleet away at an opportune moment during the interview with the caveat that if things don't go our way in parliament we'll soon be back with a larger one.

>>1402423
>The people are panicking out of fear and desperation and will not give a fuck about why we did it and our reasons

I think we disagree on his. Knowing we have reasons for our actions that are vaguely understandable to a human mind will make them less fearful of immediate destruction. Merely saying "we don't want to invade and kill you all" is a lot less effective than saying why we're mad, and why we don't want to genocide the Union. Explaining ourselves, even imperfectly, should be a powerful move towards peaceful integration especially if we reduce our fleet (which does not remove the threat of our fleet, but is useful for appearances).
>>
>>1403020
>Making a threat immediately after moving to de-escalate a situation.
That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.
>>
>>1403033

They keep thinking we can just say stuff that will wash away our past actions even though we just did all these thing in less than 2 weeks

>>
>>1403053

>>1403055

Yeah, pick ONE. Either we de-escalate, or rule through fear. You cannot do both.

>>1403055
I want us to be consistent, not acting bipolar

>>
>>1403064
>I swear to God, if this level of stupid gets taken seriously, I WILL bring back the planetary siege railgun ripdrive debate.

Please no, I still lost a few IQ points from the endless stupidity of that "debate."

>Yeah, pick ONE. Either we de-escalate, or rule through fear. You cannot do both.

What I'm advocating is a carrot and stick approach. We've already proved conclusively that we're incredibly scary and powerful. We have a massive stick and so fare we've been waving it around non-stop and making the entire population panic by thinking they're about to be invaded/consumed.

We need to provide a carrot.

We show we're reasonable, that we're logical, and that we don't just want to eat everyone. We show that the Union has committed serious crimes against us which we just shrugged off because we don't like interfering with younger races. We offer benefits for working with us in a peaceful way beyond the prospect of imminent annihilation. We explain ourselves to calm the Union down. We aren't just mindless space bugs but intelligent aliens that won't go full purge without a good reason.

We can be intimidating as fuck (an image we will never be able to get away from at this point in the Quest), while still softening our image. It is not a completely incompatible circumstance.

The humans are panicking because they have lost control over their fate. We need to give them something pro-active to do beyond rioting and a reason to think we will not murder them all unless they act with extreme stupidity.
>>
>>1403092
>>1403064
A famous statesman once said it is best to be both loved and feared, and I think he's right in this regard. In the long run it would be best if the Union is aware of exactly how we feel about them. Which is to say, we love them like our retarded step sibling who we have to look out for since our mom adopted them before she died. We care for them, seek to protect them from exterior threats and help them mature over time, but are perfectly willing to slap them when they stick their collective dicks in the electric socket. Tough love.

Of course, in the short term when we first speak to the Union public through prime time cable, we stick to a purely benevolent message. Their leaders are the ones we have to intimidate.
>>
>>1403147
Loved and feared yes, but we don't have to force the same class to do so. We want the people to love us, and the government to fear us.

We can try that later when things have calmed down but here and now? with tensions running so high and us about to take the expanse from them that will not fly

>>
>>1403271
Doesn't equal taking the expanse from them im afraid,

A full scale OQ invasion fleet happening to several Union systems in the core or expanse that we fend off after letting the union take a beating on the other hand will do wonders in making them understand it better being in our good books

I got an idea that's sure to cause some stupid.

That anon talking about holograming ourselves up for parliament, and the other anon talking about how we'd not want to indicate the queen as a particularly central commander (ie; correct their suspicions).

If the Union would be led to believe the queen not being super important, a hologram of a different range of speakers and thinkers behind them "personally" addressing parliament would do that.

There is no technical lie if they're being told they're speaking with the greatest brains of our species. This, not hugely, deflects some attention away from the queen as our single point of failure and makes us look like a more thoroughly subdivided intelligence that agrees with some of their current theories on our species. If people are uncomfortable showing speakers with our thinkers on hologram (because humans are a bit judgy when it comes to cute masses of autistic brains) we could just have an array of different speakers instead.
Now, why show them thinkers at all? Mainly because they've done an autopsy on a previous speaker and noted their brain mass. It's not incredible. Thinkers give an obvious, easy, and clean "Ah, so that's how it is!" excuse to any observant xenobiologist. And having the speakers with them act very differently from those they've met so far would be fairly simple, though I haven't figured out what extent of attitude we'd want to portray from them. Even if cheek is a given, something would have to be different to grab the more science-minded further towards a twisted truth.

The tradeoff is showing them what our research bugs look/act like, which I don't know other people's personal feelings on. It's a real risk, a trade of targets for more obfuscation. No talking that down.

There's not a whole lot other than never answering and never speaking about our intelligence that will continue capably covering it up, which has worked fine so far. I would think of this as a temporary alternative.

It's also not something we'd do soon, if at all, because direct links to "influential" speakers/thinkers would be best used as a response to something particularly dramatic. Like a disaster. Or a highly pertinent trade deal. There's more places to use holograms than parliament after all.
And of course, it would only be if we want to stretch this semi-strategic distributed intelligence misdirection any further by simply giving them another target. We can just wait, and we know the Union hire-ups like Killinger and associated scientists grasp that the Queen is important, so even a misdirection is temporary. If it changes their targets, that would be great, but there's little guarantee to its merit.

I can see parliaments rebuttal to our show of thinkers/speakers ahead of time, which would most likely be "what about the Queen?" and that's the part that makes the whole idea incredibly worthless, because we can't answer that question. Thanks for reading my stupid.
>>
>>1403303
Have they done an autopsy on a speaker though? The only one I recall was the one that exploded in acid during surgery, and was subsequently nuked when our drones broke out.
>>
>>1403298
Not saying it would, but some good press is better then none.
>>
>>1403271
The problem is, we could be accused of a false flag attack in that case. We have definitely saved the day for the Commonwealth against the Scavs, and I'm sure there are hundreds of soldiers telling stories of how the hive saved their lives, but pulling that same feat by having the hive fight hive-tech will be more difficult.

>>1403303
I suspect the Queen would not want the Union to consider her unimportant given the ego she has (she rightfully considers herself the most important being in the galaxy). However, having the Queen as the highest among a Hive leadership caste composed of thinkers and speakers could potentially work. I don't think that we need to fear the humans figuring out the Queen is a single point of failure because it is difficult to figure out, they couldn't take out the Queen anyway, and isn't even true (Elizabeth or the Barren Queen could take over the Hive if the Red Queen were to die).

I think your idea is more complicated than we perhaps want to effect, but I do like the idea of having the hive be more of a caste system with varying degrees of intelligence rather than having it appear to be a single centralized entity. This also fits with our Commonwealth speaker needing a private moment to commune with the Hive about the Nowhere disaster.
>>
>>1403212
What's demeaning about it?

In any case we can claim, not entirely falsely, that the fleet was deployed to help protect them from any hostile alien forces they woke up. We're only leaving it there until the initial negotiations wrap up in any event.

>>1403303
I would be extremely leery of showing them our thinkers, although that would lend credence to the idea that ours is a distributed intelligence. Then we can claim that the queen is just another egglayer and serves no role beyond producing more drones.
>>
>>1403336
Either way, even if they think offing Red Queen will end things, isnt Barren Queen being reborn as our daughter? If so then sh should(after a bit of getting used to it) be able to take over?
>>
>>1403350
That's why I said that even if the Red Queen dies the Barren Queen or possibly even Elizabeth could take over.
>>
>>1403391
I don't think that would work, every drone is hardwired down to the genetic level to obey the queen that birthed it over any other. In certain cases they can be ordered to follow the direct decedents of their mother queen, sure, but I doubt even with our medical tech we could rewrite the Barren Queens DNA to the extent they would readily recognize her. We're regrowing her relay and her egglayer, not totally rewriting her entire gene sequence.

And there just isn't any way Elizabeth could lead a hive like a true queen, even with the relay she is neurologically incapable of that kind of multitasking.

The prospect of enemy queens hijacking drones was apparently a prospect that terrified the old queens so much, they spent almost the entire history of the hive species making it virtually impossible. Thus our drones are VERY good at identifying mother and ignoring any one else. Even when we tell them otherwise.
>>
>>1403409
I remember QD saying that a direct relative can inherit drones. We did that with the White Queens cache of drones after all. While the queen is alive it cant be done, but the drones will obey someone close enough.
>>
>>1403432
Sure, I just doubt the Barren Queen is, or ever will be, close enough for that to work. She may have a couple of key white queen lineage parts grafted on to her but that won't be enough for our children to identify her. She'll have her own psionic 'language' and all of that and by all accounts our drones are acutely aware of that.

Not like it matters much either way. If the Red Queen dies the quest ends, so not much point in asking what ifs on that front.
>>
>>1403409
>We're regrowing her relay and her egglayer, not totally rewriting her entire gene sequence.

Aren't we doing something like that? I'm pretty sure the egglayer replacement at least is using our own genetic material which is why it's making the Barren Queen our daughter in the first place. If the Barren Queen's own children from her new hive are based on our own (the Red Queen's) DNA, and the Batten Queen is able to command them with her (regrown) relay, than that same regrown relay should be able to apply to our own drones should we die. Of course our drones will prefer their mother over any other, but they would be fine taking orders from a "sister" should the mother die.

Elizabeth probably can't command any drones long term and isn't capable of multi-tasking. That being said, she was capable of taking over multiple drones during the Nowhere event and her relay is based on Tech from the White Queen. She may be able to command some drones behind the Red Queen based on whatever DNA re-writing the White Queen did to her. I agree she can't command a whole hive, though. At least she can't without major, major, upgrades.

>>1403452
>Not like it matters much either way. If the Red Queen dies the quest ends, so not much point in asking what ifs on that front.

While that's true, having redundant characters that can "take over" for the Red Queen if she dies makes the Red queen much less of a target. If someone knows that even if they kill the Red Queen they wouldn't destroy the Red Hive, they're much less likely to take the risk of trying to attack the Queen directly, which means the quest will continue longer.
>>
>>1403459
>While that's true, having redundant characters that can "take over" for the Red Queen if she dies makes the Red queen much less of a target.
This makes me wonder...

What would happen if we laid a perfect clone of ourselves, and got that neural jack augment we just whipped up? If we can make our human agents immortal via EVE cloning, why can't we do it to ourselves? We could keep the clone in deep stasis off world as one last trick up our selves if the shit really hit the fan.

Who am I kidding, QD would never allow us to do something that game-breaky.
>>
>>1403473
We could probably lay a daughter and put her in deep space hibernation with a ship and several thinkers. The thinkers have orders that if they don't receive a command from the Red Queen in X amount of time they are to awaken and obey the sleeping daughter.

Of course... that's a lot like how we were born in the start of the quest. At least this time we could give the (multiple) thinkers our knowledge base so the new queen wouldn't start from the ground up.
>>
>>1403482
You don't get it, I was proposing a way we could survive and continue the quest even if we get killed.
>>
>>1403486
That IS a way to survive. Just the start of a new quest.
>>
>>1403486
In that case QD probably would veto it based on the sheer size of a mature Queen's consciousness.

I was trying to think up something similar to your original plan but that would actually work. I understand you were thinking of an EVE-esque clone where the Queen can never die and if she does is instantly reborn into a new body.
>>
>>1403493
That kind of feels like a cop out desu. Continuing the quest by falling back to a redoubt after a devastating loss is one thing, but having to start up from scratch all over again with a new queen sounds unappealing. If we fail, we fail, just let it end there.

>>
>>1403747
She's more a chimera (using the classical definition of the word, not the quest definition), really. Elizabeth's humanoid, but even genetically she's not out and out human anymore.
>>
>>1403764
The descriptions of the implant she received mentioned nothing about large scale genetic alterations, so I've always assumed that it was more a localized augmentation than anything else. Even if it did perform a couple of minor tweaks to her DNA they would have been limited to her brain cells and nervous system, to help support her altered neurological structure. The rest of the cells in her body wouldn't have been affected at all.

So even if you include the augs we gave her, she's still at most post-human, rather than a chimeric mashup of human and hive DNA like our hybrids are. She's still almost entirely human genetically, even if she doesn't like to think of herself as such.
>>
>>1403781
I'm like 90% sure that somewhere in there there was a couple of lines about how her genetic makeup had been modified. I'll have to see.

And it doesn't exactly take a lot of change to make someone not human. Mice, IIRC, have like, 99% similarity to humans in terms of genetic makeup. It's that less than 1% that's the rub.
>>
>>1403781
She stopped being human after she touched the thing in the Ark. That alone modified her genetic structure enough. All the stuff we've done since has been "cybernetics" in the Hive sense where we modify the host's genome to grow the implants or basically graft bio-compatible pre-grown parts in.
>>
>>1403901
>in the Hive sense where we modify the host's genome to grow the implants.
We just recently got that tech, it was impossible for Elizabeth to grow her augs so we just stitched some to her like normal.
>>
>>1403901
Point is, all those sorts of implants rely on modifying the DNA and RNA of specific cells in a human's biological structure (i.e. arms, legs, brain). These sorts of alterations are limited to those structures without affecting DNA recorded in other regions of the body, making it more like retroviral gene therapy of specific tissues, as opposed a total genetic reconfiguration.

So any genetic modifications Elizabeth has been experiencing will probably be limited to the neurons in her brain. If she were to have a child it would likely be entirely human, which is one of the major yardsticks for establishing what species someone is.

He was talking about sticking a parasite inside an OQ drone to essentially piss get off even further.

As fun as a creep v creep fight would be, we can't control our creep the way we control our drones. While our own it would be "friendly" more or less to us, we cannot control it the way we can control our drones, which means even if we win the creep battle our own stuff would still end up spreading to the detriment of the environment. At least I believe this is the case if I am correctly remembering how creep works.
>>
>>1405840
Im sure we could easily synthesize some chemicals that could hinder our own creep, which would itself have a hard counter to so it couldn't be used against us.

Revealing that the Hive knows about the Canians wouldn't produce much surprise from anybody properly briefed, but would certainly be a way to confirm "Yes, we are buddy-buddy with the Unity" if that was a desired course of action.

It would hardly prove that.
We have obviously been observing the Union for a while and have access to some of their most sensitive data. The existence of the Canians is not even a secret - we could easily pick up on it by a casual future google search of "intelligent aliens" on the Union net or by casually listening to their broadcasts. Mentioning the Canians would be weird, but wouldn't be any sort of a statement or spooky to the Union at least in comparison to our massive orbiting armada.

He didn't. I think a tech or Gilliam used the containment spray to stop the thing from eating the drone parts.

i am currently reading the archive and i have a question on quest # 61 the Theseus instance in the satellite and its memories were unrecoverable but don't we have another version of that one on the carke/orphan ?
>>
>>1410743
No. It's a separate instance without the same data. Each instance is a version of Theseus, each instance is slightly different due to differing systems architecture, inputs and experiences.

That's why it's so important that they be able to share data with one another or send downloads to Zero One.

The different instances of Theseus run independently and remotely without a permament connection to Zero One so they have to check back now and then. The instance in the satellite basically didn't have 'internet reception' before its destruction. It's like two cameras. Both are able to take pictures, but as they are in different places they record different things and have to be plugged into your home computer to share their data with the rest of the world. If you drown your camera in the pool on the last day of your vacation in a remote area, the pictures of the great hike are lost forever.

Do you guys remember how long ago the Skyl homeworld was destroyed? I think it may have been relatively recently since Heretic was going to meet Mom for her final battle (a year or so ago).

I don't know if stupid or a newfag because if you actually read the threads in the archive none of that was even implied. It was explicitly stated Heretic was waiting for Gardener and their agent and was waiting for 70,000 years.

I'm not a newfag, but I think I conflated our Mother and the Gardener in my mind. It's been a while since I reviewed the old threads. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah fairly certain their world was destroyed right around the same time as the OQ's betrayal because the Gardener had Skyll present in her court as sort of an ambassador/adviser

We really need a timeline of events.

Quest episode 52 first post
>The tugs are slow, painfully so in fact, and as they work to bring the melted remains of whatever they have found out of the eye of the inconceivably vast storm, you feel a twinge of thought; a faint whisper only slightly louder than the passive static of the universe. It nearly goes without you noticing, before slipping back into silence. The Union corvettes retreat from the system.

Did we ever figure out what that was? Was it a psionic comms array on the ship? Was it the engine shards? Was it a ceph pilot?

What the fuck was it?

The wreckage of the Mirage that held the Void Crystal it used to enter Slipspace (and use as a cloaking device I think).

We've got the Commonwealth fighting to retrieve it for us from the Union.
