Hello again fellow creators of /qst/. What may be the quickest turnover time between threads recently, once again we continue our journey into the Regional Evolution of our Moon Worlds. We will be visiting Region 2 of Rienia for this thread.

As GM, I'll do my best to actively work on phylogeny charts to track the evolutions, and also make random events for the world to drive evolution down new paths. Since this is the first time I've done EvoGames focused in a Regional perspective I'll be experimenting with how I approach these threads for better viability later on. Also we will be going to Region 3 of Janus next thread to explore life's evolution there.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name are encouraged, but not required.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything silly or derailing will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• Everyday I'll add an update Phylogeny Chart to track changes. These take awhile, so please be patient.
• Expect a Random World Event at least once per thread to shake up the world and game.
• There will be no Mass Extinction Event in the near future, so enjoy building and evolving to your hearts content.
• When this thread reaches its endpoint, we will be switching back over to Moon World Janus next thread.

Present Setting: As Rienia enters the Late Magedivatian Era, another tectonic shift shakes up the flow of life on the Moon. This latest shift in Rienia's tectonic plates has helped to fully establish the global thermohaline circulation of the world's oceans. As a result, the planet begins warming a solid 2°C releasing much of the land and sea from the cold grips of the ancient ice age of the Sulioaic Era. For Region 2 of Rienia, this shift in climate is a boon for the continual evolution of life here. These lands are blessed with warm summers, and mild winters, with only the instances of violent storms churned out over the Abdominis Ocean and Tsubo Gulf interrupting the tranquility of daily life. Additionally this region is ripe with unique habitats, such as large estuaries, the almost entirely isolated Tsubo Gulf and complex cave systems that stretch for hundreds of miles throughout the bluff-like land. This is the one place in Reinia where life has all the ingredients to flourish.

The two crowns of the Crust tree grow radically different: The two begin growing spiraling around each other, using each other as levrage. This leads to the trees, now criral trees, to be able to grow very tall indeed, only hindered by their lack of roots, which means some of these giants are toppled by their own weight.

The way this grow happens means the tree is dense, rigid and hard frther down, were old tissue hardnes and soft, meldible and nutritious on the top, where young tissue grows.

Some smaller varieties of Lesser Melscopede (Known as Louscopede) find their shells widening, but only towards the top of the body. These wide extensions curve downwards and form a shield which protects much of the upper segments of the legs from harm.

The lesser Melscorp on Landmass 2, now called Westwarn, become slightly smaller, but their meldibles become larger and more sophisticated, being capable of disecting carion and seperating edible from inedible matter.

They do this quickly to void predators which their smaller stature now invites, and their backeyes move to the side to have the possibility of full surround vision. Their brains are not capable of processing all information at once, however, so it cycles through sides, adding to its jittery behavior.

Some of these change niche: as there are no scavengers in the cave systems, both discarded plant matter as well as dead swirls and Albas just float to the bottom of its rivers to rot.

The new swirls, Carionswirls, make to scour the bottom of bodies of water and sometimes even the rocky shelves outside of them for such discarded organic matter to devour them with a new, larg, teethed mouth.

Some Criral trees migrate to Wrechland. TO survive the well-below-freezing temperatures during the winter and at nighttime, they grow into a denser, more compact shape and begin producing cryoprotectant compounds to help mitigate the damage that freezing has on their tissues. They also grow simple roots to help store nutrients during winter and keep from being blown over in the strong arctic winds.

The long Hawa's fins it uses to glide out of the water away from danger become larger to become efficient enough for actual locomotion, affording the Gliding Hwa large jumps with which to cross otherwise impassable obsticles.

Some Deep Kelp, not finding enough nutrients in the cave walls, grow smaller and build a colony structure, whereby the surface level of a wall is stripped of its iron and nutrients and the energy is evenly distributed throughout the crust the Kelp build. Once an area of wall is barren of useful material, the kelp on it die off, leving only a layer of tiny stems behind, and the colony grows further and further outward to claim the next stretch of wall.

many cryoril tee's have difficulty dealing with melswarm, as they can fly to the edible section and devour the entire thing in a matter of days. as a result, the Cryoril tree develops a delicious sugary coating.the melswarm would rather eat this then the actual tree, and as a result the tree is left alone. further more, the tree tazes advantage of the melswarm, by developing seed pods. these have a particularly sweet, almost milky flavor, that the melswarm particularly like. when the melswarm eats this, it fills itself with seeds. when the melswarm eventually dies or defecates, the seeds will be scattered onto the ground, allowing this new tree, the lolly pop tree, to spread across the warmer landmasses, like D'nesnote and Cardiat like wildfire. they have a lot of difficulty growing in colder eviroments, and as a result remain exclusive to D'nesnote, Cardiat, Eteap island and Island 7, which will now be known as Hearthlen Island

Hawa in the ocean develop primitive eyes allowing them to catch their prey easier,that prey being swarmelli. they develop large mouths to catch entire swarms at once. They have no teeth or tounge to speak of, and have very strong stomach acid to eat away at their ecxoskeleton. The big-mouthed hawa is prone to swallowing non-food items or other animals and dying as a result.

Some Thin Troc manage to migrate out of the narrow mouth of the Tsubo Gulf. They find a successful niche in hunting swarmeli and basal meli while they are sifting for food. They develop streamlined bodies with fin placement that allows them to glide over the seabed with almost no effort and outrun potential predators easily.

Some Plain Melscorp develop their two front feet pairs to be longer and thinner, propping themselves up against Criral Trees >>1412519 to be able to chew the middle of the tree, where the crown is still edible but also plentiful. For this its mandibles multiply to three sets of pincers on the sides of a mouth at the underside of its head.

Its new habbit of just standing leaned against a criral Tree and slowly munching gives it the name Chewscorp

A population of meli in the sea to the east of Wrechland evolve a lighter-coloured shell to better camouflage them from the snowca. Their shells also grow larger, covering all of their body (not including their extremities); this adaptation not only protects them against attacks by snowca but also insulates them from the cold water.

The antarctic meli also grow larger overall as this reduces their surface area / mass ratio and thus helps them to retain body heat.

Some Cave Swirl find that they require a little more than simply solid armour to survive the Cave Allsa, and so they begin to experiment with other forms of defence.

The develop a sharp serrated spike on the tip of their tail, and a pair of curved, serrated horns on either side of the head, both of which are used to injure potential predators. This is done mostly by thrashing the body violently and hoping that the spikes cut the enemy, but despite the inaccuracy of this tactic it acts as an effective deterrent.

The Blimp Troc's "head" develops into more of a skull, allowing it to turn it when necessary. This allows this slow-moving creature to be more agile in catching prey. With this development the "trunk" (elongated mouth-tube) become wider, allowing it to suck up larger/more prey.

Some Plated Melscorp adapt to a burrowing lifestyle. They grow smaller, more flexible and maneuverable body plans that allow them to easily transition between digging for roots and standing uproot to look out for danger. They also expand the now-useless antennae on their backs to cover most of their body, with the exception of the parts that are most likely to become dirty (ie face, digging claws, feet), since excessive buildup of grime makes it easier for potential predators to track them via scent. They live in/under plains of ruby kelp and petroc, in small familial warrens.

Some Bog Halikot migrate to freshwater rivers and lakes. They grow larger fat deposits to keep themselves warm and store energy, and a jaw structure geared towards grabbing and dragging shoreline prey into the water.

Hawa develop glands that can shoot the acid from their stomach. They use this in multiple ways, for attacking their prey before they eat them, as a way to cloud the water to escape preditors, and as a way to fight over a mate. (hawa of either gender will fight for a mate as all of this type of hawa are agressive) They line their mouths up and hold them togeather, spraying acid into each other until one gives up or dies.

Some Wu-Wei Halikot develop small lungs on their sides that enable them to stay outside after ebb for some time. They lose their fins as a slithering motion proves more effective in the soft sand than their mushy flippers, and their feeler hairs grow together to form singular fleshy feelers to prevent them getting stuck in the sand or between rocks and single hairs being ripped off painfully and with opnen, infectious wounds.

They prey on the Halikots and Hawkies that find their ways to the beaches.

this new species is called the Jor-Wei.

The Blimp Troc develops protection, of the same kind that it has on its claws, on certain non-blimp parts of its body. This decreases the damage it takes from swarmeli munching on it, as it munches on them.

It's the circle of life!

The Weeping Scotera in the Lowlands gains a smelling organ with which it smells out the musk of other Scotera, determining their sexual availability, mood and hunger, thereby gaining vital information on both the other Scotera as well as the habitat they're from.

Their feathers line up to thickier patches, some concealing its hearing organ, others lining its side.

They also grow larger, as the top of trees becomes a much more nutrient rich enviroment, and trees grow larger, supporting their new size.

Their behavior towards each other affords them the new name Proutera

Some of these lesscorp specialise in coastal scavenging. They patrol the beaches of Westwarn, consuming washed up plants and animals.

They evolve a different colouration which more effectively camouflages them in their new (and more exposed) habitat.

Some varieties of Plated Melscorp in the Marshlands develop thin membranes between their hind limbs and along the sides of their tail. They use these fins to swim through the rivers of the marshes and take up a somewhat amphibious lifestyle.

The also lose the claws on their front limbs, so that they are more useful for movement, allowing them to more effectively escape predators

A new subspecies of Blimpah Troc emerges which preys on the myriad smaller predators/parasites of their larger cousins. They follow herds of Blimp Troc, typically at a 1:3 snapper:blimp ratio. If a swarm of swarmeli or school of hawa begins attacking the herd, the Snapper Blimpah will use their smaller, fast-striking claws and grabbier trunks to grab as many as they can and eat them. In return, they get food and the protection of the larger, more imposing Blimps.

Some Long Hawa migrate to the underwater caves that ring the Ieme estuary. Due to the salinity of the estuary mixing with freshwater runoff, these caves have a sharp saline gradient, the density variation of which causes two distinct layers of water to form. This halocline layer is typically full of bits of organic detritus that are dense enough to sink in freshwater but too light to fall through the salty water and reach the seafloor. The Long Hawa that live in these caves feed off of this distinct stratum of decomposing matter, and adapt to their new environment by developing a sophisticated set of lenses in their eyes that allow them to see in different salinity's of water. Their middle eye regresses, however, now mostly used in circadian regulation. They also develop a stronger jaw to more easily break down the wide variety of food they come across.

Some Long Tonged Halikot find their necks lengthening and becoming more flexible, allowing them to reach foods that would otherwise remain out of reach. The Bug-eyed Hawa's fins extend to facilitate standing levitation in the water more easily which they often need to maneuver when changing from one layer of salinity to another, and their eyes adjust.

They also develop their jaw even more and feeling hairs on it.


Oh and did I mention their eyes grow a bit? Their eyes grow a bit, a random mutation tied to one of the benefitial mutations previously discussed but in itself of no particular use.

Some Landmeli develop a sloped head and enlarge their front claws and adopt an underground life, digging themselves into the soft ground of the lowlands. Their back feet fuse and gain a joint, and their mouth moves back into the protection of its head plate to shield it from the rubble it digs through.

Its eyes retard and the Digmeli almost exclusively relies on vibration to orientate itself.

Other Wu-Wei Ragalikot experience a similar mutation to that of their distant relatives, the Long tongued and bog Halikots, having their gills (how did they respirate previously?) turn into simple lungs.

Their flippers/fins also mutate, turning into claws.

These Ragalikot now live in bodies of water in the fertile lowlands. From here they slowly crawl up on land, lying in ambush in the vegetation and waiting for the right time to strike. Once a >>1427462 passes by and gets to close, the Ragalikot strikes, trying to catch it with its jaws as it at the same time shoots its powerful acid at the prey. This style of ambushing is also used from bodies of water, a bit similar to that of crocodiles.

How long The Wu-wei can lie in wait for on land depends on how well the vegitation protects it from drying. The timespan varies from 30 min to a few hours.

Some hawa, living in the cold arctic sea to the north of Westwarn, develop a darker coloration on their back and dorsal fin which helps them to absorb heat from the sun.

They also roughly double in adult size due to the effect of polar gigantism.

The Marsh Melscorps grow fatter than their exo skeletons allow, and they, spending most of their times in rivers, expose their bellies and legs (which fore a long time now have to have had actual bones).

Their membranes expand, giving them the possibility to swim up to the surface from the bottom of a river even despite the considerable weight of their armour.

It also develops a plumage crown, its colours playing a part in the sexual selection by serving as a signal to other Ragalikots for when the animal is ready to mate / searching for a mate

A population of Pararoc/Telili in Ieme also move into the mostly empty brackish grottos. They develop a unique metabolic system based on the differing osmotic pressures between the different layers of water. By giving fresh water a direct path to diffuse through to higher salinity areas and harnessing this movement to build proton gradients within their cells, they create a weak but persistent source of energy. The Telili develop a vertical body plan that extends into layers with a larger salt difference, as well as growing out their antennae for the same purpose; the Pararoc grows thicker leaves to better resist deformation due to osmosis.

some Armored Scotera in the marshes/freshwater basins undergo a significant change in both physiology and diet. The beaks of these new Scognawra atrophy and are replaced by a lamprey like jaw filled with sharp teeth. These teeth are used to gnaw at the Scognawra's food, which has now expanded from simply plant matter to include other small herbivores as the species has become omnivorous.

While the eyes on the Chewscorp's back give it some ability to detect danger whilst they munch on Criral, but their position means their vision can be blocked by the crest, and their sensitivity is somewhat limited. To compensate, these back eyes meld into a singular larger eye found at the top of the head as opposed to the front. This larger eyes is both more sensitive than the spinal eyes and has a better view, providing them with more protection

The Louscopedes shell thickens, and they grow a more compact body shape. They mostly eat Petrand and Ruby Kelp, and can dig their feet into the ground to make them almost impossible to flip and thus very hard to eat.

Some Burrowing Melscorp on Cardiat get more upright bodies to easily see predators coming and to reach the tops of trees more easily, as well as longer legs to run more good. The males also develop a head crest similar the their old tails, which is also used for signaling fitness.

Some stiky Ruby Kelp in the marsh seem to be unable to find enough nutrients to support their life all year round. Most of the time, they remain hardened up in as a spike with sharp ridges, making itself as unpleasent a meal as possible, and only in the summer, when the waters in the marsh recede, it grows again a mantle of photo/chemosynthetic tissue to produce its sticky seeds.

These Spikelp begin covering the marsh all over.

--Regional Event: Rise of the Iron Forests--
Throughout the past few million years, the warmer and wetter areas of the Corpus Region have experienced a beneficial shift in the fertility of soils. This has led to an explosion in the population of Crust Tree and Criral Trees throughout the these areas, that have rapidly built into densely packed forests. These forests in turn alter the weather in these areas, increasing the rainfall in these new habitats and providing shade and wet humid air. Gradually life in the Corpus Region begins to migrate en masse to these new Ferrous Forests as new niches and opportunities for evolution present themselves to the world.

> The Ferrous Forests are extremely rich in decomposing matter near the forest floor, and deposits of iron, zinc, and other metals.

The Long-toothed Halikot are longer and toothier than their Long Tongued Halikot ancestors, as well as being carnivorous. Their one set of legs has become two smaller sets, which provide a greater level of speed and manoeuvrability, both which are necessary in the confines of the forests. Their bodies have also grown longer to accommodate these new limbs, as well as to allow more space for organs.

In addition, while their longue tongue has vanished, they have developed a set of longer teeth on either side of the mouth. These are highly effective at piercing windpipes, or just generally damaging their prey more than the normal teeth do.

The Chewscorp in the forest, now living in the not very complex social structure of a rut, take social cues mainly from the leader, the most experienced female. Since fighting defense has become a viable strategy for them, it is quite possible for the leader to be particularly aggressive. If that's the case, the rut doesn't hesitate to slay Meldeer >>1437358 when they come across them, supplementing their diet with their flesh and becoming in effect omnivores.

For this, they develop claw hands which they use to bring Meldeer down, hold on better to Criral trees and not least groom each other.

Their feet also become broader, and less slip-prone on the thick humus of the forest.

Some crust trees undergo a dramatic change in structure: They become more efficient in the use of nutrients, and so their bells grow while their trunks, the storage needs not be as big, so it oozes out paste to a far lesser degree. This leads to the bell being used partially as support.

The Climbing Alsa changes its coloration now that it lives without the pale white wood of the Rustrees.

It also develops a bushel of thick hair around its hearing organ that help it filter out background noise and concentrate on any particular movement.

They also develop a longer tail to help them keep their balance.

Some of the Spikelp develop into larger, even less active plants, that grow incredibly slowly and only extrude a paste of seeds in the blooming season. then, whenever an animal brushes off on it, and inevitably rips up its skin, the seeds go into the animal, staying dormant, often causing infections. Once the animal has died, the Spikelbrush can grow on its corpse to a reasonable size in an uncharacteristically fast manner, using the corpse as nutrients, only starting to become inactive once its used up.

The Spikelbrush are far less common than the Spikelp that cover the marshes ubiquitously, and do NOT replace it, nor does it occupy the same niche, if their undemanding lifestyle can be called to inhabit a niche.

The Muddy Haaga of the corpus region develop a large flattened tail which is used to pat down mud. You see, they lay now dig hollows in the silt with their enlarged front limbs into which they lay their eggs. After this is done they use their hind limbs to pile the mud up on top of their eggs and then beat the mound down with their tail, in an attempt to flatten it and make it indistinguishable from the surrounding silt. Additionally, its front legs' toe joints change directions so that it can now use them as claws in their attacks.

Some hawkie evolve scaling on their sides and back, which insulate them from the cold air and seaspray. The dark colour of these scales helps them to absorb heat from the weak Wrechland sunlight.

They also develop a new behaviour: incubating their eggs in simple mounds made of sand, which are guarded by the mother to prevent them from being dug out by rivals.

The long-vestigial dorsal fin of the Climbing Alsa develops into a pair of large, vein-rich sails on its back and tail, which are used in thermoregulation.
