Listen up Boars!

I’m Cait! I’ll be your captain until Mr. Garrick comes back from the main branch in the west. I know, I know- It’s weird for a new branch to be without an established commanding officer but I assure you it’s not permanent.

Now! I know it’s really boring but we have a lot of paperwork to do today. Y’all need to complete your registration form! Once that’s done I’ll bring in our first patron, he’ll explain the contract and then we’ll depart.

>This is a fairly simple skirmish. Attacks are resolved with 1d6. 1-2-3 are misses and 4-5-6 are hits. You can only attack enemies adjacent to your tile (not diagonally). Movement is cardinal only.

>Post with your name ( Name #Trip in the name field ) and paste your character sheet at the bottom of your post when in combat.

>Reply to this post with your character sheet (Name, Class, Skills, Weapon, Items)

Good evening everyone. My name is Galien, I’m a simple merchant operating in this city.

The task I’m giving you is quite simple, really.
There’s this group of thugs who’ve stolen from me. I don’t know how, but they took a valuable painting from my manor. I expect you to go in their headquarters, an abandoned warehouse near the port, and murder every last one of them. Then, bring me back my painting.

I do hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.

Main task : Secure and bring back Galien’s Painting.

Optional task : Let no one escape the warehouse alive.

>>1413224
North, South, East and West, not diagonally.

He scratches his head and shrugs. "Clear to me."
He turns to Giles and the Capn'. "So, what's the plan?"

And yeah, it was really fun on my side too. It still has a bunch of problems to address (when units are too close to each other it becomes somewhat hard to discern what's what.)

I'm also planning some kind of veteran mechanic, where if your unit lives through a bunch of battles you'll get to customize (within reason) how you look on the field. Maybe some kind of class-wide level ups too.

Unique weapons/items are also definitely coming.

Since you're already using attached health and skill indicators, a little unit identification marker on the opposite side of the skill marker would be pretty much the only suggestion for improvement.

Two letters from the name, or a number, or class + number (S1, S2, S3 for the 3 scouts, for instance)

It allows for much quick referencing of who is who and standing where, especially when sprites are as gorgeous as they are but somewhat similar in the closed confines.

Thank you for playing /qst/!

Wew, this was a lot of work and I loved every part of it. Can’t wait to make more content, I truly believe this quest has a lot of potential.

My twitter is https://twitter.com/cegremo_hq if you want to be alerted when we'll run this again. But I’m pretty sure you all knew this.

Here is the full crew! I think we'd better do the veteran thing now rather than after a bunch of battles. Going through one is enough, and should be rewarded! So if you took part in the fighting just have a short sentence with a physical description of your character. Keep in mind that you still have to wear the Boars uniform, but you can be creative with it. I'll draw the modifications before the next battle.

Also if you have complaints, suggestions, comments, anything feel free to voice it!

Creative is a vague term
Can I get my uniform coloured like that of a swiss guard? (Pic related)

Adriano De Luca is a prideful Italian spearman who comes from a long line of Vatican guards.
He himself has a large black mustache, which go well with his overly expressive, bushy eyebrows. He adorns upon his head the ornate feathered helm of the Swiss guard, though below it, his head is shaven.
>>
>>1417307
I don't mind, but maybe some NPCs will call you showy, we'll see.

Do you want to change your spear for the sword you got? Or do you leave it for someone else to take?

I changed it in the PSD!

I'll try to be more punctual! Where's your character sheet by the way? If you intend to play you better make one, man.

Let's see, comments.
Good game Cegremo! Was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see where it goes.
I would like to see more combat 'animation', but I know how much lag that can put on processing so I don't blame for not including it so much. I'm just a bit spoiled by other skirmishes.
That said you do a great job of verbally relating the action. Which is something I wish other skirmishes would do a bit better.

As for Brenil...
Broad shouldered, muscular, a shock of short brown hair and smug grin describe him best. A grenade belt would be nice too.

Cegremo, how many people do you plan on running per combat?
I don't mind waiting until the ranks thin a little due to casualties.

Might as well post a sheet in case I can ever catch a game, this looks quite interesting and I like that it's easy to follow, which is something some of the other skirmish games can struggle with.

Name: Rollant Durand

Weapon: Crossbow

It depends how many players show up I'd say. 9 was okay but I'm pretty sure I can manage more.

There definitely will be missions with a set number of players but otherwise the more the merrier I guess

>I would like to see more combat 'animation'

You mean like numbers going down (-4!) or ''miss!'' written directly on the map? I don't follow skirmish quests all that much to be honest. I've read Iron Hearts and Mecha Mercs and that's it.

Or do you mean literal animations? Because I actually experimented with making a basic pre-animated AfterEffect file for outputting really simple combat animations (think Darkest Dungeon). But it would mean one hour and a half+ between rounds and that's pretty outrageous considering the simplicity of this system.

Anon might mean slightly more "animated" in the sense of adding a few flourishes and decals to actions taken.

Mecha Mercs is actually a fantastic example, where the QM added a little flair to events without nececssarily cluttering things up.

Your art is absolutely gorgeous, but without indicators (however slight) of action or movement or events, it feels a little dioramic and still. You move, they move, you move.

Not that readability is a bad thing. I was so busy staring at this setup in awe that I couldn't even join.

Fortitudo and Ira are directly comparable, as are Bravo and Arguere. In each case, one is mathematically better (for each weapon) than the other unless some sort of damage reduction or miss chance is introduced.

https://pastebin.com/yemhVcJC

Bravio is always a downgrade unless your odds of hitting exceed 100% (without damage reduction). It is a trap option and should be buffed (in which case you should take it for free damage) or removed.

Additionally, there is little reason to use the longsword instead of the mace and unless there are going to be a lot of heavy enemies, very little reason to use the mace over the crossbow -- -1 damage vs armour is worth a lot less than +5 range. The crossbow can shoot diagonally (if I have been following the combat correctly) which annihilates the spear's advantage completely. The crossbow is the best melee weapon in the game.
>>
>>1419717

... just like Arguere, I meant to say.

Okay, how about this:

>Crossbows and bows range nerfed

>They now have to worry about obstruction

>Spear range is buffed by one, and can attack through units.

>Armor is now a value that is deduced out of every attacks. Crossbows and maces lose their additional damage against it but gain something else: Crossbows ignore the armor bonus and maces reduce this number by 1 each attack.

I don't know what I will do about the skills though.

And thank you for helping me with this! I've always had poor balancing skills so this helps enormously.
>>
>>1420390
I like it. Adds more tactical considerations to equipment.
>>
>>1420390
Those are some stylish cat-ears.
Also do we heal between missions?
>>
>>1420390
Okay, there is even less reason to use the longsword now, though:
Longsword 1.3 DPR
Mace 1.5 DPR, destroy armour
There is still no reason to use the Longsword.

That is also assuming that you are getting rid of the +3 damage bonus that maces get against armour.
>>
>>1420571
Spitballing here, what if the longsword (and other cutting weapons) got a damage bonus vs unarmoured? I'll have to make a spreadsheet for it when I get home.

(probably no one actually cares about this except me, though)
>>
>>1420580
Well, if it makes the game more balanced and fun to play, then I care
>>
>>1420580
Damage bonus might be too much if unarmoured units have only 4 HP. Eeh, pulling deep on my GURPS knowledge for equivalents... some kind of defense bonus with a LS in exchange for only 1/2 move? strike diagonals? (the longsword is so named for its length) Give a free 1 tile 'step' after attack?

Maybe a chance of critical hit (stackable with skills)? Like x2 damage on 6's. I'm beginning to think that using d10 would've been better.

But I could also see >>1420571 be a thing. +1 Dmg to unarmoured units isn't that lethal, right? I mean, enemies will get tougher and, with class levels, HP will go up.

Do you think range weapons should have limited ammo? Maybe people would pick the bow more if it would have more arrows than the crossbow.

And again, I really appreciate the help.

Erion and Brunebert are customized, Kayeden is added.
>>
>>1420683
So, Ceg, when will you host this quest? Like, which days?
>>
>>1420683
+1 dmg to unarmoured units does sound like it would balance pretty well with the mace (Although longswords were also used against armored enemies by hitting with the pommel or thrusting the blade inbetween the plates of a suit of armor. Just saying.)
>>
>>1420683
+1 damage on unarmored targets would give:
Longsword: 1.3 DPR
Longsword (unarm): 2.0 DPR
Mace: 1.5DPR, destroy armour
That might be good, depending on how common unarmoured targets are.

Innate crit would give:
Longsword (crit): 1.7 DPR
Mace: 1.5 DPR, destroy armour
Makes Longsword comparable with Mace vs armour. Might be the best change, I'm not sure.

You could play around with ammo. What happens when the crossbowman runs out, though?
>>
>>1420692
Weekends, Saturdays most of the time.

>>1420726
>Although longswords were also used against armored enemies by hitting with the pommel or thrusting the blade inbetween the plates of a suit of armor.
I know but I don't think I'm ready yet to integrate stances/grips in the quest. Or if it's required at all. Maybe weapon class specific skill? I don't know.

>>1420749
We'll try the innate crit next session.
Maybe every unit could have the same basic, low-damage backup weapon. Archers and crossbowman would fall back on it when out of ammo. This could also permit disarming opponents/players, but it could easily become too OP.
>>
>>1420885
Oh no, i think stances and grips would only make it more complicated. A weapon specific skill could be interesting, though. Maybe a special skill that you can only get by completing several jobs using only that weapon (to indicate how the merc is getting better at using that particular weapon).

Also, i really enjoy the thought of a crossbowman running out of bolts and just starting to whack thugs with his crossbow.
>>
Something that I've been wanting to try for long swords was give them a cleave or a long stab.
Less damage overall but at least it will have utility against crowds or picky targets.

Cool game btw :vc
>>
>>1421122
Alternatively, just giving them more raw damage or a bonus against "armorless" tends to contrast well with weapons that interact with armor.

Yes... yes.. this works too...

>>1421122
>>1421134
Those are some juicy ideas. Maybe cleaving could be for Greatswords and unarmoured bonus for Messers? The weapon selection is somewhat limited and I've been looking into expending it.

And thank you for dropping by, Monday. It means a lot that you like this quest!

>>1421162
Your character is now in the PSD!

>>1421569
I don't know yet. I'm sure I want it to be class-wide, kinda like Valkyria Chronicles, alternating between Health/Skill/Mobility/Gear bonus and more practical perks like deploying a battle wagon/tank for engineers.

>>1421844
You doubting my ability to come up with numerous quality waifus insults me, man.

>>1423021
One other branch, and the main branch is somewhat split into two. What they think of you will depend on how you perform or the missions you choose.

I'll be away for a couple of days and probably won't be able to run a proper session until next week. I'm still planning some npc interactions and shopping for gear this week, so check out the thread every once in a while.
>>
>>1423852
Ceg, your ability to come up with quality waifus is unrivalled, true. However, I'm doubtful it's even possible to create such a large volume of top waifus in a skirmish game.

Still, I'm looking forward to more of this quest no matter the number of waifus. It is some goooood stuff.

>>1423852
Alright, so we're the third branch. Fourth if the main branch counts as two. And since the main branch is in the west, I think it's safe to assume we're the East Branch. Sounds like we've got a lot of diplomacy among boars to keep in mind, lads. Here's hoping we're as good at talking as we are at slaughtering thugs.

And with that job paying for our food for a month, we can focus on shopping for those personal touches. I know I'm excited to see if they've got any interesting daggers or boots in stock.

Hi, warriors! My name is Elle, but I've already... met most of you, right? She winks

Anyway, I'm here with your pay~ Four (4) silver pieces each. Quite a hefty sum!

And as you probably know, I'm the one who runs the shop. So if you need new gear, come and say hi! I won't bite! Small reminder: new recruits don't have to pay their first loadout. It's on me! Do keep in mind that my stock isn't always the same, and will change between assignments.

Your inventory is persistent between battles. Whatever you first first took with you or found during a battle stays in your inventory until you use or discard it.

>Fresh Healing Herbs: Health +1 x2 (1 Health per round, for two consecutive rounds.)
>Potent Healing Herbs: Health +3 (instantaneous)
>Minor Antidote: Cure most poisons.
>Rations: Full Health recovery between multi-part battles.
>Bandages: Stops bleeding.
>Rope: Helps you climb, rappel and tie stuff together.
>Smoke Grenade: Explodes in a large cloud of thick, opaque smoke. Lasts two rounds
>Flammable Oil: A large jug of oil, useful for setting large areas on fire for a few rounds. Comes with a match.

Oh! And here's a special request: I have been looking all over town for a bottle of Aquinarrian white wine, but can't find one. If you encounter one during your travels, please bring it back to me. I'll make it worth your while, I promise you that~

[A big man suddenly bursts through the hall's doors]

BASTARD'S BOARS!

I'm Barrand! Captain of the Black Suns!

Are you thirsty for Glory? Are you aching to take part in our time's greatest battle? Then listen to me!

[Caitlyn]
H-Hey! I'm the capt-

[Barrand]
Shut up kid, men are talking here!

My company has been hired to break a siege and we need good, strong men to destroy an auxiliary supply camp. Approach the task however you want, sneaky or all-out assault. I'm paying three silvers for every man you send! Not much, I know, but think about all the supplies you'll loot! An encampment full weapons and gear! Take it all! I don't care, I just want these guys posted there dead. You can even join in the main assault later if there's some fight left in you! I won't pay for it, but remember, everything in the castle is there for the taking! The whole country will talk about this for months!

Our scouts have reported that Léonard the Badger is the guy in charge of the supply camp. And I don't know if you heard about him, but he's a mean whoreson! Aha! He owns a massive mace and I want it! Bring it back and I'll give you guys a nice bonus.

So come to Smuggler's Crags tomorrow at dusk, that's when we'll begin our attack!

Be there or be forever forgotten, Bastards! Aha!

[He then turns around, almost unhinging the doors on his way out.]

[Caitlyn]
Kid?! At least I'm not a rude, bald idiot!

Ugh... I can't wait for Mr. Garrick to take my place. I miss running the books.

Anyway, what do you guys want to do about this? Should we take the job or wait for another one to come up? It might end up being a tough ordeal, but I don't think it's above our current capabilities. Besides, the Black Suns are involved. I don't remember the last time they've lost a battle.

I also met that Léonard guy once, my father used to work with him. He's a filthy, violent man. I can't say I ever saw the mace Barrand was talking about, but knowing Léonard it surely is something nasty.

Your thoughts?

>Main Task: Kill every mercenaries you can at the auxiliary supply camp.

>Optional Task: Bring back Léonard the Badger's mace to Barrand.

>Optional Task: Join in the main assault the next morning.
>>
>>1427857
Well, Sir Barnard is rude, but he hankers for shiny-glory. A castle? Just being near that battle, that's glory right there! Let's do it. Some good swords and bits in a supply camp.

And if we can get rid of a filthy-violent-mean bastard man in the doing, that's a bonus!
>>
>>1427857

"Can't say I'm particular fond of Barrand there Anyone who brushes off another unit's Captain like that is a pompous ass. Don't particularly care for the 'pay' he's offering either. But if that Léonard fellow is as bad as you say he is Caitlyn, and the loot is as good as Barrand is claiming then I'll not complain. The job doesn't get my vote, but I'll go if that's what the rest of ye' want."

>>1427857

>>1428702
I'll twist my schedule to accommodate whenever he runs it as long as I know about it in advance.
>>
>>1427857
Ah, on any other occasion I would pay no heed to the words of a man with such oafish gall, but I see an opportunity in this proposal.
You see, I wish to make a name for myself as a great mercenary in these lands. This is not a task accomplished by sitting idly by and watching some buffoon flail his blade about to great personal gain, but rather by gallantly marching forward into the fray and flailing your own blade with much greater vigor.
I propose we take these Black Sins up on their offer and show them what a real group of mercenaries can do. We'll burn that camp to the ground, then lead the main assault ourselves! With those Sun fellows bringing up the rear.

>>1427677
We're going to have a glorious battle ahead of us, so I best prepare.
I'll take some rations and bandages if you would be so kind.

also, can I reequip my spear? the new changes to combat make it much more appealing.
