You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were in your quarters in the fortress monastery, having awaken to a fresh day. Romulus was present as well, greedily gobbling down a bowl of leftover sausages.

You and your new little impromptu party had spent the last few days gathering needed supplies for future ventures out into the wild frontier. Not only were there beasts and monsters to deal with, but a number of bandits, rogues, and criminals taking advantage of the wilds to hide or prey upon unsuspecting explorers and settlers. Still, you were confident that you had all the necessaries.

Thankfully, after that little visit from the Manaknights, nobody else has approached to bother the fortress monastery, giving you all much needed peace and quiet. There was still a little time left before you were all to venture into the city to look for job requests and information. From what you remember, Morgan was prowling around in the gardens outside the walls. Nino was in the library as always, and Naru was probably in the dining hall getting drunk off the stores of mead, much to Havel's annoyance.

Probably, if we plan on adding more party members for Dragon tier threats.

If we ever get up to Dragon-tier threats, do you think we should get an airship filled with ballistae, or Guymelefs (assuming we find a dragon heart to power the damn thing in the first place)?

You pick up Romulus, who's still nibbling on the last of the sausage and walk out to the fortress monastery's outer perimeter. The serfs managed a rather sizeable garden outside, to supplement the food stores so they wouldn't have to completely rely on the city for supplies. There, you can see Morgan standing in the midst of the greenery, her hood off and head craned towards the sky. Her eyes were closed as she takes a deep breath, soaking in Sol's early rays.

You wait patiently, despite Romulus trying to nibble at your armor in impatience. Finally, Morgan opens her eyes and turns to see you. She immediately takes a step back in shock as her face flushes red.

"H-how long were you there?!" She stammers, quickly pulling her hood back up.

You shrug.

"That's not funny!" Morgan narrows her eyes. "Just staring at other people like that is rude, you know!"

You bow your head down slightly to apologize.

"W-well, anyways, shouldn't we be getting going now?" Morgan fumes. "Where are the others?"

"Come ooooooooon!" Nino grunts as she tugs a very reluctant and slightly hungover Naru out of the fortress monastery.

"Look, squirt, it's way to early in the morning to- HSSSSSSSS!" Naru winces the moment Sol's light hits her eyes.

You cock your head. What a curious reaction for a cleric.

"Hey, you'd react the same you get an eyeful of that." Naru growls as she rubs her bleary eyes. "Do we really all gotta go at once?"

"Well, a party always has to stick together!" Nino pouts as she continues tugging at Naru's arm. "Plus this is gonna be our first job as a party!"

"All right, all right." Naru groans.

"Well, let's go then." Morgan says, quickly dashing past you and shooting a quick, embarrassed look at you.

You decide to take up the rear as Nino enthusiastically takes the lead, heading into Eisenwand.

You prod Morgan the shoulder, wondering where you're all headed.

"The Explorer Guild headquarters, of course." Morgan explains. "It's sort of become the unofficial gathering place for adventurers, so that's where everybody posts job requests."

You nod, now understanding.

"Word of advice, you better wait outside, Big Guy." Naru turns her tired gaze to you. "There's gonna be a lot of... 'interesting' people in there, who may not take too kindly to a Black Templar snoopin' around..."

"Naru!" Nino chides.

"What? It's true." Naru sighs.

You shake your head. You don't particularly care of what other people think of you, and they want to make it a problem, you'll gladly make it theirs.

"Of course, why did I think trying to talk sense to a Black Templar would work?" Naru sighs. "All right, let's get this over with."

Thank to Nino's guidance, your party reaches the Explorer's Guild. Unlike the Church or the Tower, the Explorer's Guild looked pretty normal and nondescript. Just standard wood and brick construction. Nothing too fancy. The great wooden double doors at the entrance were also flung wide open for people to freely go in and out, which you can clearly see was going on now.

"Come on! Come on!" Nino waves happily as she skips inside, haphazardly leaving the rest of the party behind and dropping out of sight for a brief second...

Fortunately, nobody seems to make any sorts of moves against you. However, you do seem to draw a combination of curious, concerned, and angry stares from the various adventurers. You pay them no heed as you continue on inside and reacquire sight of Nino, who seems to be skipping towards a front desk area.

You look to the left and see what looks to be a large tavern area, where you suppose is the main hangout for adventurers. It was certainly much cleaner and nicer looking than that hole in the wall you picked up Naru from. You turn to look at her.

"They charge ridiculous rates for their drinks." Naru grunts.

You continue on, following Nino until you reach the front desk, which seems to be manned by...

...a little brown haired girl with a large braid.

"Hi there! Welcome to the Explorer's Guild!" She says cheerfully. "How can I help you?"

You turn to Morgan and nod to her. You weren't certain if the Guild girl could understand your body language.

"Ah!" Morgan steps forward with a polite smile on her face. "We're here to look for any jobs?"

"Ah! Then you just have to look that way!" The Guild girl to your right, where you see a large wall practically covered with notices and requests tacked on. "If you see a job to your liking, just take down the notice and bring it to me, and we'll approve it!"

"What's the approval thing for?" Nino frowns.

"Well, we of course won't let adventurers take jobs they're incapable of completing!" The Guild girl says cheerfully and turns her gaze to you. "But, considering your company, I don't think you'll have any such problem!"

Well, at least it looks like she didn't seem to have any biases towards your order, which was good.

"Okay!" Nino says as she dashes over the request wall. "Oooooooh, there's so many!"

"So, you have any ideas on what to take?" Morgan asks.

"You sure? That's a pretty confident start." Morgan frowns.

You nod.

"Well, I suppose it IS you." Morgan sighs.

"At least they pay better." Naru grins weakly.

"Oh oh oh! How about this one?!" Nino tears a notice down and runs up to you, holding it up in the air.

MONSTER HUNTING: A massive wild Basilisk has been spotted prowling near several local farmsteads and has already petrified a number of livestock. A bounty for the head of this Basilisk has been posted.

Nino shoves a job request to eliminate a basilisk into your hands. You examine the notice for a moment. A basilisk wasn't a terribly dangerous creature, but it wasn't completely harmless, either. It was suitable prey, and the scales certainly could have some useful applications.

You gingerly take the notice form Nino's hands and head back to the Guild girl, slapping the notice on the front desk.

"Ah, the basilisk bounty?" The Guild girl quickly scans your party for a second. "Hmmmm, I suppose a party of four should be able to handle it!"

Romulus then barks in annoyance.

"Sorry, five!" The Guild girl giggles. "Anyways, just as a reminder, if you do manage to complete the bounty, you don't necessarily have to return here to turn it in! Guild jobs are redeemable at any Guild branch office!"

You nod. Made sense.

You then point to the notice and then to the other adventurers lounging around, wondering if anybody else had taken the job.

"Huh...?" It takes a second for the Guild girl to figure out what you're getting at. "Oh! Well, as a policy, we don't reveal information on exactly who has taken a job!"

Ah...

"But, well, I can tell you that one other person did!" The Guild girl winks.

"One!? To take on a fucking basilisk?" Naru gasps.

"Well, he's already proven to be capable enough!" The Guild girl smiles. "You should hurry before he slays it before you do!"

"Come on! Let's gooooo!" Nino starts trying to drag you and Naru out of the Guild headquarters.

And so you all head out, exiting one of the city gate and trudging down one of the many roads snaking out.

You match pace with Nino, whose nose is still buried in a book, as expected.

"Ooooh so Basilisks are the ones that can petrify people with a stare!" She gasps as she reads through. "But... how do they eat their prey if they petrify it? Why don't they just eat regular rock?"

You point to your own armor, your gauntlet tapping against your steel breastplate.

"Oh! So they only use it for self defense?" Nino's eyes widen.

You nod. Basilisks generally hunted like any other animal. Their petrifying stares only seemed to be weapons of last resort.

"But if they only use it for self defense, why is the Basilisk attacking livestock? It's not like they pose any threat to it." Nino frowns. "Why would it do that?"

You reach your arms out wide to indicate creatures of a large size, and then make a chomping motion with one of your hands to signify aggression.

"So... the bigger ones get more aggressive?" Nino blinks. "Does that mean, er, the personification is them marking territory?"

You nod. Every creature had its own method. Droppings, fur, and in a basilisk's case, petrified wildlife.

"Wow, I never knew that!" Nino's eyes sparkle.

"I have no freaking clue how you can carry a conversation with a guy who doesn't even talk." Naru grunts as she tries to keep pace.

"Well, it's kinda hard to explain." Nino puts a finger to her chin. "I guess it's just my mage's intuition?"

"I somehow doubt that." Naru grumbles.

Suddenly, you hear a loud rumble in the distance. You immediately snap your head to the direction of the sound, where you see panicked birds immediately taking to the air.

"Something big is moving around." Morgan frowns. "Might just be our basilisk."

You turn to Morgan, but she doesn't need any reminding. She drops her pack and dashes forward, bow at the ready. Naru and Nino also shrug off their heavy packs and you set Romulus down to watch your things. Though a loyal pet, he was nowhere near ready to face a beast of this caliber.

As you, Nino, and Naru head for the treeline, Morgan emerges.

"It's definitely the basilisk." The reports. "But it looks like that other adventurer has beat us to it."

"Damn." Naru groans. "Did he already kill it?"

"No, they're still fighting." Morgan shakes her head and turns to you. "Looks like the guy is a Paladin."

A knight from the Church of Sol? Odd to see one out here hunting beasts, much less all alone. Paladins tended to travel in groups, after all.

"I mean, I can draw that basilisk's attention and we can all take it down together." Morgan suggests, getting her bow ready.

"Or we can just let the basilisk eat him so we can get the whole reward." Naru grumbles.

You step forward, halberd drawn and ready. You would attract the basilisk's attention, giving the rest of your party the opportunity to attack it.

"You sure about this?" Morgan asks. "You're not exactly fast, so you'll have to take the hits."

You nod and pound your chestplate. That's what your armor was for.

"All right..." Morgan nods and turns to the others. "Nino, you're with me. Naru, stand back and support us from a distance."

You shake your head.

"Okay, so focus on healing then?" Naru raises an eyebrow.

You nod.

"Great. Less work for me, then." Naru shrugs. "Go get 'em, then."

With your halberd at the ready, you charge your way through the trees until you reach a small clearing. There, you see the basilisk, a massive, four legged lizard. You could immediately tell that this one was larger than average. Easily the size of a small cottage. No wonder the local farmers wanted it gone.

But the more curious thing was the Paladin battling it. He was armed with a sword and shield, though his sword was obviously enchanted, crackling with golden energy. That was curious in itself, as enchanted weapons, outside of the Manaknights, were incredibly rare to see. Every time the basilisk tried to close in or use its petrifying gaze, the Paladin would raise his sword in the air, causing to flash a bright golden light. The flash would blind the basilisk, preventing it from attacking or using its magical eyes. Good for defending himself, but the Paladin definitely couldn't find any openings to attack.

Well, time to change that. Time to grab its attention. You charge forward at the basilisk, eager to take advantage of the distraction the Paladin was causing.

You swing your halberd, employing the blunt end to pound through the basilisk's scale armor. However, while you land a solid hit, you don't appear to do much damage to it other than grabbing its attention. Its head immediately swings around, its glowing amber eyes focusing on you. A large jaw full of rows of teeth bare themselves at you as the giant lizard hisses at you.

Well, you definitely have it distracted now.

The basilisk's giant armored head lunges forward like a ram, slamming right into you. Even with your armor and bracing for the impact, you still feel the sheer force behind the massive animal's strike and you're sent flying into the air. You hit the ground and roll back onto your feet.

Meanwhile, Morgan and Nino get their attacks in. A flurry of arrows dig themselves into gaps between the basilisk's scales, while a massive fireball slams into its back. The basilisk roars as it tries to find its attackers, its eyes glowing bright in an attempt to petrify them. Thankfully, Morgan and Nino were smart and quick enough to avert their gazes and duck back into the trees.

"Jeez, you okay?" Naru grumbles as she kneels next you, her hands glowing with soft sunlight to heal you. "That was a pretty nasty hit."

You nod and pound your chestplate. Your armor held.

"Just don't overdo it. You're my paycheck, after all." Naru sighs.

"Haha! So a fellow adventurer has come!" The Paladin says happily as he jogs up to you. "And a Templar, too! What fortune!

You turn your head to the Paladin. He as wearing the regular silver armor, in addition to a white tabard bearing the symbol of Sol, the Golden Sun. He seemed normal enough, though something was kind of off-

"It seems that this beast is a little tougher than expected!" The Paladin continues as he offers a hand to you. "Perhaps we should cooperate to bring it down?"

You take the Paladin's hand and he pulls you up to your feet.

"Haha! I knew the spirit of cooperation was within you!" The Paladin chuckles.

And on cue, the basilisk turns, its eyes glaring at you and the Paladin.

"Well shit, I'm outta here." Naru grunts as she quickly makes her escape, dashing away back into the trees.

"I'll draw the beast's attention and you can land the finishing blow on it." The Paladin offers, his sword glowing with golden energy.

You nod in agreement, readying your halberd.

"Then it's agreed!" The Paladin laughs as he raises his sword in the air. "Haha! Beast! Prepare to be cleansed by the light of the Sun!"

The basilisk's eyes wince at the blinding light the Paladin's sword is giving off, but now that it was wounded, it was in the throes of bloodlust an desperation. Without regard, the basilisk scrabbles forward on its clawed legs, mouth open and ready to chomp down on the insolent human.

This mean you and your comrades would only have a narrow window to take it down.

The basilisk charges forward toward the Paladin like a moth drawn to a torch. A giant, carnivorous moth.

Nonetheless, you charge at is as well, your halberd ready to swing. Your timing is just right, intercepting the charging basilisk right as you swing your weapon in a wide arc, aiming the blunt end at the side of its head. You're rewarded by the heavy THUMP of an impact, cracking armored scales and stopping the stunned basilisk right in its tracks.

And Morgan and Nino capitalize on the opening. More arrows dig into the Basilisk's flesh, while a massive fireball engulf's the basilisk's head in flames. The creature roars in pain and confusion, thrashing around wildly. Thankfully, it quickly falls quiet as it succumbs to its wounds and the fire.

"Haha, that was quite the teamwork there!" The Paladin laughs as his sword dims down. You are fortunately to have such a wonderful party, Templar! Though it surprises me to see a Black Templar working with others outside their order!"

You shrug, eying the Paladin warily. Even though he seemed earnest enough, you still didn't quite fully trust him.

"Anyways, it's rude of me not to introduce myself!" The Paladin gives a small bow. "My name is Solaire, of the Chruch of Sol!"

You tilt your head curiously. That name wasn't exactly familiar to you at all.

"HEEEEEY!" You hear Nino yell. You turn to see her waving, jumping up and down excitedly on the slain basilisk's corpse. "We did it! We did it!"

"Hey, if you got enough energy to do that, then you can help us pull some of these scales off." Naru grumbles.

"Also need to bring a trophy back as proof of the kill..." Morgan notes as she brings out a knife to cut off one of the basilisk's massive claws, almost as large as a longsword.

"Anyways, that was excellent cooperation!" Solaire says happily as her raises his arms in the air. You do the same to return the courtesy.

"Haha!" That's the spirit!" Solaire laughs. "I shall be on my way!"

You point to the basilisk. He didn't want a share of the bounty?

"Haha! I didn't come here for the bounty, just to make the lands safe!" Solaire chortles. "You can keep the bounty! Just the knowledge that I was an assistance in vanquishing it is enough for me!"

You shake your head vigorously and reach down to your belt, where you carried your coin pouch. Even after buying supplies, you still had a fair number of gold pieces left over from turning in that bandit leader. Sure, it probably wasn't anything near what a proper share would be, but you couldn't let Solaire leave with nothing. You take the coin pouch and hold it out for him.

Solaire pauses before breaking out in jolly laughter.

"I suppose our orders aren't so different after all, eh?" Solaire laughs. "Thank you, Templar. I'm afraid I didn't catch your name?"

You shrug. Templar worked for you.

"Ha! A man of few words, I see." Solaire nods, his armor seemingly starting to glow radiantly with his mood. "I hope we can meet again in these wilds!"

He then pauses, as if straining his ears to hear something.

"I'm afraid I must be going! Duty calls, you see!" He says as he whistles.

Out of nowhere, a pure white horse with a golden mane gallops out of the trees. Solaire quickly mounts it, gives you one last jolly wave, and rides off.

What an odd fellow.

"So who was that?" Morgan asks as she walks up to you, carrying a few basilisk claws. "Oh wait, that was a silly question. You can't actually tell me his name, can you?"

You shake your head.

"Figures." She groans and then pauses. "We have incoming."

And that's when you hear it, too. The heavy clopping of the hooves of warhorses. Easily at least a dozen. Out of the trees appears a small battle line of Paladins, mounted on armored horses and bearing might banners of the Sun. One of them, noticeably smaller than the others, rides forwards towards you and Morgan and takes her helmet off.

"You two." She addresses you both in a curt yet gruff manner. "Have you seen another Paladin move through here?"

"And why would you want to know?" Morgan asks suspiciously.

"Church business." The young Paladin retorts. "I will ask again. Did another Paladin pass through here?"

You shrug noncommittally. You were in hurry to sell Solaire out. If he didn't want to be found, then you'd honor that desire, even if it meant eluding his fellow Paladins. You're sure he had his reasons.

Morgan sees your response and quickly catches on.

"Sorry, we didn't see anything." She points to the dead basilisk, where Naru was still pulling scales off while Nino was cheering her own. "As you can see, we were a bit busy."

"I see." The Paladin girl frowns, not quite convinced by the story, but unable to prove it otherwise.

"You mind giving us a name?" Morgan narrows her eyes. "Especially if you're just going to ride around the forest harassing adventurers?"

"Valentia Astora." The Paladin girl responds coolly. "And you?"

"Morgan." She points to herself, and then to you and the others. "And that's Nino, Naru, and... the Templar."

"The Templar?" Valentia raises an eyebrow.

"Doesn't talk much, so that's just what we ended up calling him." Morgan explains.

You nod in confirmation.

"...I see." Valentia sighs and turns to the other Paladins. "We've wasted enough time here. Let's continue."

"Yes, Lady Astora!" The all proclaim as they follow her.

"...well that was weird." Morgan sighs as the Paladins ride off. "Wonder why a Paladin would run from his own?"

You shrug again. Who knows?

"I don't know why." Naru says as she walks up, her bags bulging with scavenged basilisk scales. "But I get the feeling they're all gonna cause a lot of trouble for us down the line.

You wonder if that's the case. The Frontier was large and wide. What were the chances...?
