You awake to the sound of explosions.

Someone must be getting some practice in today. You look around the tent next to your tank and find it empty. Seems everyone is gone. You yawn a little and pull yourself out of the tent, then look around. The hangar is empty, save for most of the tanks, except for the Churchill. Huh. You start walking down towards the exit out into the training grounds. There you find a crowd of girls formed up.

A light chill actually crosses you, making you shiver. It’s fall now. You just realized that. Where did the summer go? Darn.

You come out and see the crowd. “Serafina.” Serafina looks to you, then grins happily. Some of the girls are still dressed in pajamas or have hastily put on their uniforms. “What’s going on?”

“Meryl and Iris are sparring!” says Serafina. “Our glorious teacher is showing the Canadian brute what for!”

The Churchill and the Firefly shoot at each other from across the training grounds, helped only by their cover of dirt berms and wooden barricades. The Churchill pokes out then fires. The six pounder shot bangs across the Firefly’s front. They seem to be in some kind of stalemate. That’s what happens when you’re in not-so-particularly fast tanks like the Sherman or the Churchill.

Dix Hauser apparently has come in to see this as well. “Come on! Kick her ass, Meryl!” Meryl leans out of the commander’s cupola, observing leisurely with her binoculars before coming back in.

“It’s a stalemate!” says Serina. “We’ll be here all morning.”

You smirk. “All morning? I’ll be surprised if this ends before October.”

And indeed, that’s pretty much what goes on. The two of them spar it out on the field, but nobody manages to get a good shot in. Meryl has reach, but Iris astonishingly has flexibility. The two are at such even odds that eventually they just run out of ammunition. A good fight, enough to waste an hour or two. Meryl and Iris shake hands, smiling each other. “You fought good, Iris,” says Meryl.

“You fought well,” says Iris. “A lady knows when a worthy adversary stands before her I suppose.”

“Hmph!” Meryl chuckles at that. “We need to exchange numbers. I bet I could steal what makes you the best on your team, Iris.” Iris rolls her eyes at that, taking a sip of tea.

With that, the crowd disperses. You look over to see planes from Glenn Curtiss School of Technology fly overhead, apparently in the middle of practice. And out there, you see the stark silhouettes of command towers in the distance, other Academyships sailing in formation. Fleet Fest.

“So uh…” Meryl looks to you, ready to take a question. “What exactly do we do during Fleet Fest?”

“It’s an opportunity to meet other tankers,” says Meryl. “Or just hang out with your crews, celebrate the unity of NATO. Not much to it. You look like you could stand to have a day off with your crew, Zumzum.” Ugh, that nickname rears its ugly head again. “Up to you of course.”

You and your crew have gathered up for the day, followed by Denise as well. Winona springs to life, happy as can be. “Finally, a real day off with Ellie! What are we going to do? Shopping? Clothes? Lunch?” She leans in close, half-lidded eyes and all. “Me?” You slap her upside the head. “Ow!”

“No.” You point ahead down the street corner to see a trio of tankers. “We’re going to hang out with them.”

Stack quirks her brow. “Oh. The Kursk Girls?” Precisely. You could recognize not just the sight of her, but also her scent, Oryola Kuznetsov. Standing next to her where two of her commanders, Kim-ly Nguyen and Rozaliya Ulanova. They look over at you.

“Ah, solnyshka!” Oryola grins, then gently pats your shoulder. Some dirt rubs off onto it. “You made it! You are remembering my good friends Rozaliya and Kimmy, da?”

“Yeah, we met during the off-days,” you say. “How are you two doing?”

Nguyen nods, bowing to you. “Most good, thank you.” Rozaliya nods happily as well. “We’ll be happy to socialize with you all.”

“Great!” says Winona. “How about we go hit up an arcade or something?”

“Or maybe the batting cages,” says Ingrid, somewhat hopefully.

Rozaliya and Nguyen glance at each other. “We don’t know what those are.”

“Swimming at the pool then?” asks Winona. “Oooh, they actually installed an wave generator so that you can do some surfing!”

“I don’t know how to surf,” says Nguyen.

“Shop for clothes?” says Stack, prodding gently.

Rozaliya says, “Why? These are clothes.”

Winona tilts her head, confused. “Um. Do you two do anything other than Tankery?” Rozaliya and Nguyen glance away, giving you the answer to that question.

Oryola smirks. “They are hard workers like you, solnyshka.”

“I suppose we can do some Tanekry stuff. But afterwards, we should do something fun, help you guys relax a little bit.”

Nguyen says, “But I relax by doing tankery.”

“Same!” says Rozaliya.

Ah. Well. There must be something they can enjoy.

Ah yes, the mighty ISU-152. Oryola volunteered her tank for use to drive around on, and immediately you realize not just her skill in loading, but in driving as well. The big lumbering casemate has agility that shouldn’t even be possible. Whatever Oryola did to its engine or its suspension, she won’t say. You all ride around on the back as Oryola takes you around. “So, Nguyen!” Stack calls out to her over the engine noise. Nguyen rides around, sitting next to the cupola. “You from Vietnam?”

“Yes!” says Nguyen. “Back in my village, we didn’t have tanks to practice with!”

“What did you use then?” says Ingrid.

“Horses!” she proclaims. “Or failing that, water buffalo.” You all stare at her in confusion. “It was a very chaotic childhood!” Rozaliya laughs loudly as she rides on the gun. “At least compared to Rozaliya!”

“What’s her story?” you ask.

“No one knows! She showed up to a tryout one day, and she completely wrecked the competition,” says Nguyen. “And if you ask, she gives you a different story every time!”

“Like what?” asks Josephina. Nguyen contemplates on it.

> “I come from a long line of Ukrainian nobility, stretching to Charlemagne.”
> “I found the SU-76M, he speaks to me telling me to defeat the enemies of KGB. The agency, not the school.”
> “My seven siblings were all into Skycraft so I decided to take Armourcraft to be different.”
> “I caused the Tunguska incident.”

“I see.” That’s quite a few stories. You look at Rozaliya, who happily sways about riding on the gun, her arms held up high.

Nguyen says, “While we’re here. Would you like to learn a little about Kursk tactics?”

>> “Sure. What do you have to offer?”
>>
> “I’d like to know more about you.”
> “Sure. What do you have to offer?”

“Sure. But first, tell me about yourself. You really couldn’t get any tanks back when you were a kid?” you ask. The ISU-152 rolls up to outside of the hangar, there Oryola puts it in park. You look around to see more tankers hanging around, showing off their tanks, or preparing to go for a drive around the training grounds as well. Your crew all jump off, with Rozaliya as well hopping off and going for a fun little jog around the tank.

Nguyen shakes her head. “My family was very poor. We made our living on the farm, me and six sisters. I am the youngest.”

“Really?” You sit down next to her. “Was it tough living like that?”

“It’s more tough living now,” she says. “I only learned about armourcraft through magazines at the library. We didn’t have TVs or computers or anything like that. Living primitively though makes you practical I suppose.”

“How did you get into KGB?” you ask.

“Kursk sponsored the school my parents sent me to,” she says. “They had tryouts every year for their squad. I was actually rejected three times before they finally gave me a chance. And by then, I impressed the coaches enough that they recommended me for first string here with KGB.”

You nod slowly. Hm, poor living. What does that remind you of? “So you were part of a farm team then?”

“I suppose. But Kursk takes very good care of those its sponsors,” she explains. “They even let me visit my family whenever I want to.” She smiles happily. “I even get to ride the horse every now and again. Do you have a horse?”

“I-…” You sigh. “Yes.”

“I’d love to see it,” she says. “You know, horse riding and horse archery are the ancient progenitors of modern armourcraft.” She waves it off. “I don’t really buy it though. Seems strange.” With that though, she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small red booklet. “This is a book of tactics that they give all Tank Commanders here on Kursk. Would you like to read through and see what you want to learn?”

“Sure.” You take the book and start flipping through.

“Ready, brace!” You grab onto the hatch of your Cromwell. Oryola, Nguyen, and Rozaliya ride along the back. “Now!” The Cromwell suddenly stops. “Forward again!” The Cromwell starts off again. “Now stop!” The Cromwell stops again, almost throwing you out of the hatch. “Son of a-“

“I’ve banged my head against the wall more times than I want to admit!” yells Stack. “Fucking damn it!”

> NEW TACTICAL MANEUVER

> Many good gunners will know how to lead a target on the move. Stutterstepping is the act of braking then starting forward repeatedly to trick their ability to lead and cause them to overshoot. Although this slows you down, this can buy you valuable time against veteran gunners.

“You’re doing fine,” says Oryola. “You’re a natural at this, solnyshka!” Oryola complimented you!? Oooh my! You blush a little. “Now then, let’s stop up for now and take a break. I think it’s way past lunch time in fact.”

The Cromwell stops where it is. There you find Dix and Griselda talking with each other. “So I say, go with something versatile. Something you can use in all situations. You ask me, this business of indirect fire is a whole load of hogwash.” You and Oryola step off. “Oh, sweet. It’s Zumzum and Comrade Pigpen.”

Griselda smiles at you. “Me and Dix were just discussing the catalog of tanks that the US government is letting us pick out of Fort Benning. It’s a wide selection really. Lot of good tanks but they’re only letting me have one. Got a suggestion?”

“I’m inclined to say we do need indirect firepower, but I think another fast hitter like a Comet or a Chaffee would do us some good. If you want to buy another tank, I would suggest indirect firepower afterwards.”

“Good idea,” says Griselda. “I’ll defer to you then, Ellie.”

Dix folds her arms, grinning at you. “Hmph, even the goody two shoes agrees with me. I’m just glad Griselda is thinking about this rather than just being one of those types who wants to fill their roster with the best tanks. Amateurs the lot of them.”

“You run into that a lot?” you ask.

“All the fucking time,” says Dix. “I’m usually pretty nice when our school comes around to mainland schools to talk Tankery, but a lot of the amateurs think all they need is a roster of modern tanks rather than a good crew. A good tank is a good starter, don’t get me wrong. But an elite crew will take you everywhere. My opinion of it at least.”

“It is a very agreeable opinion,” says Oryola. “Especially from one as hotheaded and short as you.”

“Hey! I’m not short!” Dix huffs. “Besides, I am the most patient fucking girl you will ever see round these parts and-…” She turns her head, then her eyes widen. Because standing around talking to Meryl is Freya Ward, accompanied by several other of Mei’s foreign muscle. “FREYA!” she screams.

Freya looks over at Dix, and her polite smile drops dramatically. “Oh. Dix. Listen.” Dix starts storming over to Freya. “I just wanted to say that it was nothing personal and I-“

“I’M GOING TO RIP OFF YOUR TITS AND FEED THEM TO MY DOG YOU BITCH!” Dix rushes at her, but is immediately stopped dead by Oryola and Griselda holding her back. “Don’t hold me back you bitches! You traitor! We could’ve won that year if you didn’t drop out!”

“Calm down, Dix!” You keep in between Freya, who looks ready to return the favor of a fight and Dix who really wants to escalate this into a fight. “Calm down! It’s not worth it! NATO will disqualify you if they find out you assaulted another tanker!” Dix struggles against Oryola and Griselda’s hold while Freya’s fellow commanders step in around her, ready to defend her. After a few seconds, Dix goes limp, glaring intensely at Freya. “Okay?”

Dix shoves Oryola and Griselda away, then points at Freya. “This isn’t over!” She storms away, kicking at the ground.

One of the commanders folds her arms. “I had heard Dix was a hothead,” she says with a thick French accent.

Griselda says, “Show a little respect. I would be pissed too if I had a member of my team take off in the middle of a tournament to join another team, especially if it’s because of money.”

Oryola shrugs, stepping in between the two groups now. “Griselda, Elodie, I don’t believe you all are acquainted with Mei’s Mercs.”

“We are,” says Freya. “She smashed us with a whole load of lights during the All-Star game.”

“I imagine Mei wasn’t very happy,” you say.

“She’s never happy,” says another of the commanders. She offers her hand to you. “Charlotte Tuffin.” You shake her head. “This is Julia Brunet, you know Freya Ward, that’s Eri Barkmann as well. Emilia Liscum, Merida Surena as well. We represent Zhou Enlai School of Business.”

“Did Mei pay all of you for your loyalty?” asks Griselda, clearly not impressed with them.

“Agreed.” You fold your arms, looking to the mercenary tankers. “It’s nice to meet you all. You guys fought well in the All-Star game.”

“Merci beaucoup,” Julia Brunet says. “You as well. I imagine if things were different, you’d be on our side.” Unlike them, you have principles to abide by. “I know Mei extended an offer to Iris Blackbourne but she flatly refused, unfortunately.”

Iris steps into the conversation, a stern look on her face. “I do not leave my team when they need me.”

“Fair, fair,” says Charlotte Tuffin.

Emilia adjusts her thick glasses a little, frowning deeply. “Is it really that bad that some of us like being paid to do what we love?”

Griselda grunts. “Maybe when it involves abandoning your team.”

“That’s enough.” You all look over to see another one of Mei’s mercs coming into the picture. She looks displeased by this. She adjusts her glasses a little. “Cash aside, we’re not bad people like you make us out to be. Maybe some of us actually want to be on a winning team for once.”

Freya smirks, folding her arms. “Oh great, Vinegar’s here. I wonder where Salt is, we’d have the full pair.” She motions to the new girl. “This is Josie Stilwell. She’s Mei’s XO.”

Stilwell grunts. “And I won’t have either me or any of my team be hammered by your holier-than-thou arguments. We’re here to win. Doesn’t matter what team we play for.” The mercs nod, standing behind Stilwell. “You’ve got your Tankery, we’ve got ours. Now we’ll be going if you’ll excuse us.”

“You’re excused,” you say. Stilwell motions the tankers to follow her, and out they go through the front entrance.

Meryl sighs. “I hate drama.”

You and your crew meet up with Olivia Cromwell and Gwynedd Archer, who are in talks with Rosehip. Rosehip happily cycles around them with her folding bicycle, laughing madly. “Stop running circles around me!” yells Olivia.

“Make me!” yells Rosehip.

“Aaargh!” Olivia stomps her foot, then looks to you. “Ah, you must be Elodie Zumwalt! The Silver Shell winner of the All-Star Game!”

“That’s me,” you say.

She smirks, looking up and down at you. “Hmmmm…” Olivia rubs her chin. “You seem to have the stuff. “It’s within NATO rule limits,” says Stack. “I don’t imagine y’all would be so creative.”

Elyse gasps. “Really!?” The fan club crowd around a very bored looking Gwynedd. “What’s it like? What can you tell us!?”

“Oleg, Miss McPherson.” You find the two of them chatting with each other near the entrance of the hangar. “Been a while since we talked I think.”

“Indeed,” says Miss McPherson. “You’ve been busy, we don’t blame you.”

“Da,” says Oleg. “At the very least, Miss McPherson has been keeping her head low since Dottie is in town.” He folds his arms, nodding slowly. “I imagine things would not go over so well if the two ever met up again.” That’s for sure you suppose. “What did you want to talk about?”

“I just wanted to see how you were doing,” you say. “And maybe ask if there were potential upgrades in store.”

“Ah, perhaps!” Oleg holds up a finger, probably smiling beneath that welding mask of his. “You can still convert your tank into a Challenger or a Comet, depends on you really. Do you remember the pricing?” he asks.

“30… something,” you say. Wow, that much money to spend. Man, you’ve gotten far too used to spending that kind of money. “Thereabouts?”

“40k actually,” says Oleg. Oh. Shit. “Other than that, not sure what upgrades are left. You can still install the nightvision sights.” He snaps his finger. “Oh, I could do some more. You’ll have to talk with me later.”

“Ah, you want to convert the tank now?” asks Oleg.

“It’d be good, yeah,” you say. “We need some extra firepower and some armor too. Especially against the lineups we’ll be facing later.”

“Yes, yes,” says Oleg. “Your ammo licenses and all of your modifications will carry over to the Comet, just so you are aware. I will get started on it right away and let you know when it is done. Should be done on Friday right before the match. We’ll have to see.” With that, Oleg takes his leave. That just left you with Miss McPherson.

“So, Miss McPherson.” You look to her, then tilt your head. “You and Commissioner Durocher…”

“Not on good terms lately,” says Miss McPherson. “I don’t blame her. She took our blacklisting pretty hard. It’s not outside the realm of possibility she started the NATO League just to get back at the ITL for blacklisting her and ruining her chances at Tankery. But, that’s theory anyway, my theory at least.” She folds her arms, shrugging. “Miss Zumwalt, I’m surprised you care anyway.”

“You’re a teacher here, not just any teacher, a teacher that likes Tankery,” you say. “I didn’t have so many of those back in Middle School. It helps that you’re helping out the team too. I just want to make sure you’re alright as all.”

Miss McPherson smiles a little. “I’m alright. Truth be told, I do miss being able to talk with Dottie, but those days are over. I won’t keep you from your crew though. So I’ll take off for now. You should know where to find me.”

“Until next time.” With that, Miss McPherson goes to help the Historians, who are busy reading over the manuals for their tank.

Winona hugs you from behind, grinning. “It’s time for dinner, Ellie! Come on, what are we having?” You pull her off, frowning a little.

Maybe grab a few other crews/visiting tankers too, make a little event of it, it's Tankfest after all.

Maria Da Silva is busy gutting a salmon apparently. “I am going to make a nice cooked salmon filet, simple enough. Medium rare. No such thing as well done salmon in my opinion.” She starts scaling the salmon.

As for Dix… “Fried chicken, nothing else like it!” She points to the cooking oven. “Which is why I’m just cooking my leftovers. I’m not very good at cooking.” That… honestly doesn’t surprise you. The other tank commanders however are happy with cooking their own foods. It’s not the most diverse cuisine, you’ll admit. But everyone adds their own touch of home to it. Meryl for instance is making a nice salad, June Bug Weathers some chicken noodle soup, and Perrine Hobart a gumbo out of whatever she can find.

All of that produces an intense aroma of food that just tickles your nose. And after an hour or so of them cooking, you’re ready to eat. You dig into the salmon first because it’s salmon and by Jove it’s good. Your crew watch as you munch furiously on the salmon, apparently neglecting the other plates. “What?” you ask.

“You gonna eat that?” asks Stack, pointing to the fried chicken on your plate. You shake your head. She pulls it over and starts munching on it. Everyone is chatting away, eating their food. “You know, Ellie. This week’s special.”

“Yeah, it’s FleetFest,” you say.

“Well, that and uh… it’s the last week before labor day.” You stop eating. “You know, the first day of school?”

Oh. Oh shit.

Winona says, “Summer really passed by fast.”

“Yeah,” says Josephina. “Seems like only yesterday we all just met each other.”

Ingrid chews on her food a bit, looking down at the table. “You know, guys. We’re Naval Studies, we don’t take classes like the regular General Studies kids. We take our courses online unless some stupid professor makes us do our stuff in person.” Right, right. Still though. “We’ll be fine.”

Yeah. Yeah. Sure. You chew slowly on your food.
