It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies. After an ordeal that involved Elves, the Wilde Jaege, and even more Elves, you finally made your way back to the warcamp, that was transferred to the world as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

You were called to a strategy meeting of Teuton Knight-Captains, and brought your (provisional) Lieutenant, Kathrin, along.

"We should recruit bowmen. We won't have to train them as much, and it'll supplement our forces with another means of attack."

Gunther and Sebastian nod, contemplative, but Veit and Sigmund frown, clearly having some objection to this. The Southlander, Veit, is the first to raise objections to this.

"Victor, boy, are you sure that's wise? We should work on training more knights, or calling our brothers who abandoned us for the Templar Order back to our side!"

Sigmund, while less confrontational, is of a similar mind. "Mein Prinz, I would not put it so... crudely, but Veit's suggestion has merit. Might we not issue a call to our German brothers, to protect one another?"

Gunther leans languidly in his chair, an easy grin on his face. "Meine bruder, worry not! Back in th' homelan', m'father usually sent 'is knights back'd by bowm'n to clear out bandit dens. Is'n effective comp'sition, they compl'ment each o'her well."

Veit sputters at this, trying to poke holes in the theory, but Sigmund simply remains contemplative.

"Very well, but, Sir Gunther, you must remember, we have but a force of Seventy and Two Hundred men strong, and it is split into five warbands. If we were to utilize bowmen, we would need a greater wall of defense for them."

It is at this point Sebastian (known as the Clever in some circles,) speaks up. "Well, Brothers, I have two courses of action for you, then. Action the first, we all band together, and march as one army. No more singular warbands. Action the second, we call on our German brothers in the Templar Order to join us." Steepling his fingers, Sebastian leans forward. "Of course, both courses of action have their positives and negatives."

Sigmund nods. "We would have to coordinate our commands more often, if the first." Veit fills in the second.

"And I doubt the Templars would appreciate losing around 500 men from their ranks."

The silence hangs heavy in the tent.

Speaking up, you cough, clearing your throat.

"Well, I, for one, would not wish to... ruffle any feathers among our Templar brothers. And we are not so deprived of men that we need call upon all German men to our aid. I say we unify, band together. It would mean more work in coordinating our efforts, but we have worked for years before this, back home. Besides, we shall still retain individual command of our warbands, we'll just have to communicate."

Veit grumps, mumbling about 'how he has been working on his own for years, Saints damn it, and it's fine that way,' but the others seem to take it fairly well. Sigmund especially, eyes shining.

"Riding with you again, Mein Prinz, shall be an honor."

Giving a slight bow, you grin.

"Likewise, ser Sigmund." Turning to Sebastian and Gunther, you nod respectfully. "And I trust you two have no issues with this plan?"

Gunther simply grins and shakes his head. He's said his piece. Sebastian, however, raises his raspy voice in a chuckle. "None, ser Victor. It will be good to ride with my brothers once more."

Sigmund pipes in. "I trust that we can count on your leadership, Sebastian? It would be a privilege to ride under the man who beat back the Spanish Moors with King Louis in 970."

Shaking his head, Sebastian stands, and grabs Sigmunds' hand, pulling him up to eye level. "Not under, my brother." He motions to the rest of you. "Beside."

This cheers everyone up, including Veit, and the meeting concludes on a high note, despite the serious subject. Walking towards the area of the tents that have your banner flying over it, Kathrin is beside you, silent. Looking her over, you see nothing on her face that could betray what she thought of the meeting.

>"So, Kathrin, what did you think of the meeting?"

"Come, walk with me for a bit. Do you think I made the right decision?"

Kathrin looks up at you, and raises an eyebrow. "To bring me, recruit bowmen, or unite the Teutons?"

Rolling your eyes, you chuckle. "You know what I meant. Still, your input on all three matters would be appreciated."

Kathrin nods, humming as she thinks it over.

"Well, whilst I appreciate you bringing me along, there was nothing I gained knowledge of, that you wouldn't have told me later. Presumably." She gives you a small half-grin. "I can't say I didn't enjoy the company, however.

"Hmm.... the bowmen. While I see it as an investment, the men might not. Understandably, they might wish to be reunited with their brothers, but I feel that this decision was the correct one. Of course, where we will recruit them, that's the pressing issue, now."

Passing a fire, stoked in preparation for the swiftly advancing night, you pass your men, who appear to be in good cheer, those formerly of Berthold's warband mingling freely and heartily with those that remained of yours. They let out a small, yet hearty shout as you pass, saluting your honor, and your rank.

"And, well, for the uniting of the warbands, I'm actually against that." Surprised, you look at your Lieutenant, who winks at you. "What, you thought my views would be completely in line with yours? I'm your woman, but I still have ownership of my personal thoughts."

Shaking your head, you grin. "And why might this be, my oh so bold provisional Lieutenant?"

Serious again, Kathrin turns her gaze to the sky, looking up.

"I would prefer if we have more independence in operations, and not have to communicate with anyone. It makes it easier for decisive, swift action." She shrugs. "But that's just my preference. I shan't raise any grievances over it."

Reaching Kathrin's tent, you bow, and say,

>"Well, Kathrin, I appreciate it. I shall see you on the morrow."
>"It is good to know my Lieutenant is not afraid to voice her thoughts. Sleep soundly."

You let out a small laugh.

"Well, Kathrin, I appreciate it. It is good to know my Lieutenant is not afraid to voice her thoughts. Sleep soundly, and I shall see you on the morrow."

Curtsying slightly, Kathrin gives you a look, something glittering in her eyes, and smiles.

"Very well, My Lord, if you insist upon it, I shall have the soundest of sleeps. Til' the morrow."

Turning on her heel, she heads into her tent, leaving the tent flap waving behind her. Taking a deep breath, you smell cinnamon.

Well.

--------------------------------------------------------

"Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Groaning, you roll out of your cot. Whomever had the bright idea of bringing roosters in a war camp should be strung up in gaol, or drawn and quartered. "....Sir! Milord!" And there's your squire, Edgar. Grumbling, you stand up, stretching. Rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, you yawn, and speak.

"Enter, Edgar."

Your squire rushes through the tent flap, carrying your gambeson, belt, and trousers. "Milord! There's a commotion in the middle of the camp! And all of the Knight-Captains are being requested!" Waking up quicker now, you allow Edgar to get you dressed, going from nude to presentable in less than five minutes. Strapping your sword to your waist, Edgar stands earnestly near the tent flap, almost buzzing with nervous energy. Following him out into the camp, you stride to the center, where the Saint's war tent slouches.

A large, and constantly-growing crowd of knights stands in a ring around.... something taking place in the center, in front of the tent. Pushing through the crowd of other knights, you make your way to the front, where you see fifteen knights, dressed similarly to your own Teutonic garb, except inverted in all colors, with a white cross on a black background. That of the Knights Hospitallier de Malta. Wait...

You didn't even know there were Maltese Knights here. What are the Hospitalliers doing here? You had thought that it was only Templars and Teutons. This is news to you. But why would they be calling a presentation now?

It takes a while, with the assembled knights milling about, a low murmur filling the air as they talked about what this could possibly be about. You, however, weren't chatting, rather, looking for some familiar faces. There, there, there, and there. Natalia and Cellica, both standing on the left side of the crowd, talking to one another. Catching Natalia's eye, you give her a quizzical look, to which she shrugs. It seems she doesn't know much more than you do.

Looking to the right, you spy your former Teuton Brother, Marcus, and not far from where he's standing, your lieutenant, Kathrin. They are separate, but both of them notice you, and acknowledge your presence, Marcus with a chipper smile, and waving, and Kathrin, with a subdued nod.

So it looks like everyone's here. Tapping Edgar, on the shoulder, you lean down to whisper in the lad's ear.

"Edgar, lad, if you would, guide Ladies Natalia and Cellica here. Thank you."

Edgar nods earnestly, eager to prove himself, and scampers off into the crowd, eliciting some affronted yelps by the knights he squeezes past.

Looking at both Kathrin and Marcus in turn, you jerk your head in your direction, and wave to the two, indicating that you want them over here with you. Marcus is all together too happy to oblige, marching right across the front of the crowd, causing you to groan and bury your face in your palms. Kathrin, at least, has a sense of subtlety, working her way around the back of the crowd to you.

Eventually all of your friends arrive, greeting you, and asking you questions, like you'd know more about what's going on than they would. Shushing them, you motion to the Knights of Malta standing in the center.

Clearing his throat, the knight carrying the banner shouts (in Latin) to be heard above the murmur of the crowd.

"We, the sons of Malta, the Knights Hospitalliers, renounce our oaths of service to the Templar Order, and reinstate our oaths to the Knights Hospitallier."

Stunned, the crowd is silent, including you. Where.... where did this come from?

"Thank you for your time. We leave at noon. Any and all who wish to join us, may, so long as they swear the Maltese Oaths. Good day."

And like that, the crowd is spurred into motion, the Templars, and even some of your Teuton brothers crying out in rage, confusion, or sadness.

What do you do?

>(Make sure the Templars don't do anything rash. Guard the Hospitalliers as they leave.)
>(Catch up with the Hospitallier leader. Figure out why.)

Raising your voice to be heard above the crowd, you shout as much as your lungs will allow.

"BROTHERS. BEFORE YOU SAY OR DO ANYTHING YOU WILL REGRET, I BESEECH THEE. HEAD TO YOUR CAMPS, WAIT FOR YOUR CAPTAINS." The crowd falling silent, you now can lower your voice to reasonable levels.

"I would ask that each of you stay rational about this. I'm sure that our brothers have a good reason. Please, pray on this."

Your fellow knights, while they're still visibly (and audibly, judging by the grumbling) upset, they're mollified by your words and commanding presence. The Knight-Captains look at you with a strange mixture of gratitude, contempt, and curiosity. If you knew that speaking up would inspire such a myriad of feelings in other Captains,

Sighing, and looking to Natalia and Marcus, you say,

"I am sorry we did not have much of a chance to speak, my friends. But, alas, I am afraid the same must apply to you, Marcus, and I would bet that you want to get to your men soon, Natalia. Do not let me keep you, please."

Nodding, and saying their farewells, Natalia and Marcus head to their respective camps, trying to figure out what to do.

What to do....

Looking at Cellica and Kathrin, you think about your next move.

>"Cellica. Kathrin. We're going to figure out what inspired this move. Come."
>"Cellica, you stay with St. Herard for now. I'm not too sure about the mood in camp right now. Kathrin, we're going to find out what's going on."

"Both of you, go to my camp. Stay there, and handle things until I return."

Neither one looks too happy with this arrangement.

"B-but Victor!" Cellica looks at you, flustered, and slightly angry. "I want to know what is going on! Why did they renounce their vows?"

Kathrin is similarly displeased, but her disapproval can only be seen through telltale marks on her face, the corner of her mouth curving down, the slightest indent in her forehead, suggesting a frown, more than actually displaying one.

"I am of a mind with her, my Captain. Why are you sending us away?"

You sigh.

Frustrated, you grit your teeth, and clench your fists. Keeping your tone level, you look at both of the women, and speak.

"I need you to handle the men, I told you. I'm delegating. Now go."

Kathrin, obviously displeased, gives you a curt nod, and looks at Cellica, face a cool mask that doesn't let any emotion slip through.

"Come, milady. There's no time to waste."

Cellica, grumbling, grudgingly obliges, frown on her face. Muttering under her breath, she follows Kathrin, and the two start talking to each other, voices low. Shaking your head, you follow the Hospitallers as they make their way to their camp, which is already packed, and ready to leave at the first notice. They must have packed it in the night.

Striding with purpose, and more than a little frustration at this unexpected, situation-altering change, you walk up to the man who spoke, and clear your throat, drawing his attention. Turning around, perfectly calm and poised, the Maltese priest-knight raises an eyebrow, and bows slightly.

"That was a masterful way of handling that situation. I thank you, Brother."

Nodding at the compliment, you clear your throat, and ask, "What might your name be, Father?"

The Hospitaller obliges, giving you his name.

"I am Father Ġovanni Scarlata de Malta, my good sir. And I am leaving."

>"Might I ask why, then?"

"What made you renounce your vows publicly? Or at all?" Gritting your teeth, you gesture to the camp around you in frustration.

"We don't need something like this, it's barely been a month since we've come here! The men are still frightened, angry, and confused! This will only make the situation worse!"

The Maltese man halts, look on his face understanding, and didactic, as if explaining something to a student.

"My Brother, I will forgive your words, for they are true. However, if you would listen to me, then I might tell you."

Crossing your arms, you think on this, but eventually nod. "Very well, tell me why."

Sighing, Ġovanni steps close, lowering his voice. "I ask that you don't spread this about. The army doesn't need any more dissent than it already is suffering from my announcement."

Hesitating, you nod, and the Hospitaller sighs in relief.

"Thank you. On our expedition to the south, we came across a band of raiders attacking a caravan of former slaves. We outmatched the raiders terribly, so we managed to extract a surrender. However, once they were bound, and ready for gaol, the Templar unit we were a part of simply slaughtered them, without even offering them a chance to repent."

You frown, but you motion for him to continue the story. It's not really ENFORCED, but it is generally encouraged to give prisoners the chance to repent.

"Well, after we moved to the slaves, we, (the Hospitalliers,) began to minister to their wounds. We were ordered to halt as soon as they began to question them, as they worshiped a foreign god."

You raise an eyebrow. "And they forced you to stop giving them aid?"

Ġovanni shakes his head. "No. They slaughtered them all on the spot. My brothers and I decided that we could no longer go by the oaths of an Order that slaughters prisoners without penance, or heathen without telling them of the True Way."

>"Well, I suppose that's... reasonable. I still wish you would stay."

Ġovanni, surprised, takes your hand, and shakes it firmly. "Well, this makes for a better send-off than I expected. Thank you, my Brother."

He turns to go, but you have one final thing to say to him.

"I beg of you, though, as a Brother in Christ, stay near, there may come a time where we need stalwart men, who do not forget that in our hearts, we are here to help all those who can be helped."

He hesitates somewhat, and looks back at you. "I... will keep that in mind, brother. I will let you know where we are headed, at least. We have caught wind of a small hamlet to the southwest, that is completely isolated. We shall make our home there. Please... stay safe."

You sigh and head back to your camp.

"You as well, Father, you as well."

Opening the tent flap, resigned, you see your friends inside immediately stand up, and begin peppering you with questions.

Cellica begins the barrage.

"The Templars and the Hospitallers had a serious disagreement. I will bring this to the Saint later. For now, I must collect my thoughts."

Tentatively, Kathrin, Edgar and Cellica accept this, and nod.

Sitting down, slumping in your chair, you close your eyes, head up at the top of your tent. This situation is completely... wrong. Brothers in Christ shouldn't be fighting, and they shouldn't be.. politicking. Even if it was over their interpretation of what the Holy Word or Holy See told them. It just wasn't the time.

Of course, they shouldn't even BE here. You groan, attracting Kathrin, Cellica, and Edga's attention. Burying your face in your hands, you just wish you could stop thinking. If only for a minute.

It is then you feel a light hand upon your shoulder. Cracking one eye open, and looking to your right, you see Cellica offering you a halfhearted grin.

"If- If it's any consolation, know that we'll stay with you, Victor. Right, Kathrin?"

Kathrin nods.

"Victor... as much as I want to know what's going on... she's right. I will stand beside you, no matter what."

Cellica looks to you, smiling.

"See? You have us."

Smiling slightly, you pat her shoulder.

"Thank you, Cellica. I appreciate it, but that's not what I'm worried about, not exactly."

Cellica cocks her head slightly, but doesn't say anything, as you sit there in silence for a few minutes.

Eventually, you come to a decision.

"Cellica, Kathrin, please stay in our camp. I'll go to the Saint alone. I'll tell you later."

The two women are about to continue their argument with you from earlier, but you hold up a hand in a placating manner.

"Please understand that I don't want to shut you out of this process, but we must respect the chain of command, and the Saint needs to hear of this first."

Kathrin immediately nods, understanding.

"Very well, sir. I shall wait here. But..." Kathrin looks uncomfortable for a second. "You tell me what's going on, alright?"

Cellica nods, and points at you as well. "Yeah, tell me, too! I want to know what's making my friend feel bad!"

Smiling, you shrug.

"I'll do my best, although, depending on what the Saint tells me, I might not be allowed to."

They shrug, and seem noncommittal.

"I doubt the Saint would prevent your Lieutenant from knowing important information."

Cellica chimes in. "And I'm the Ambassador! He'll HAVE to tell me!"

She looks to Kathrin, uncertain.

"Won't he?"

Laughing, you leave your tent, waving.

"Until I return, ladies."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Making your way through the tent, you pass many cookfires, which the men are absolutely packed around, talking about what just happened. The muttering has calmed down in tone, although there is the excitable individual here and there.

Eventually, you pass through, and reach the war tent, and enter with no announcement. St. Herard is standing at the map table, marking something with a charcoal stick.

He looks up at you, and lets out a sound halfway between a growl and a cough.

"Victor. What 'r yew do hrr."

>"Saint... I... have something to tell you."

You decide to ask a question first, to gauge the situation.

"First off, did the Maltese tell you anything?"

The Norwegian Saint looks at you, raising one of his bushy eyebrows.

"Nrr. Tis a surpris to me 'swell."

The shock must've shown on your face, because he raises an eyebrow.

"Waht tis it?"

They... they didn't tell the Saint? But why? Did they fear that he would keep them in the army, or punish the Templars, or something?

>"It's... nothing. I was simply curious as well."
>"They got into a serious dispute with the Templars, and they plan on setting up in a village somewhere to the southwest."
>"The Templars killed prisoners without a chance to repent, and heathen without a chance to convert."

>"The Templars killed prisoners without a chance to repent, and heathen without a chance to convert." A serious accusation and one we should investigate

The Maltese have taken grave offense to the actions and plan on setting up close by.
