You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

The light and crackle of the campfire was a welcome sight in the dark night. Hung over the fire was a rack of some of the meat your party had managed to scavenge off of the wild boars you had slain. Better to live off the land than dig into your own supplies when possible.

Meanwhile, Nino was fast asleep, with Romulus clutched in her arms and her head resting on the lap of a very annoyed looking Naru, since she couldn't freely get up and move about without waking the little mage. Morgan was out patrolling the perimeter, keeping an eye out for not only Solaire, but any possible wildlife or bandits that would be attracted by the fire.

And finally, your temporary companion, the Paladin Valentia, was merely sitting there, staring at the fire. A somewhat troubled look on her face. It seemed to be stemming from worry? You weren't too sure.

You walk over and sit down next to Valentia, your armor clanking from your movements. Her eyes dart to the side to investigate the noise but she calms down when she sees it's you.

"Ah, Templar." She sighs. "I'm sorry, I didn't get a chance to properly thank you for helping me with that boar."

You nod. It was nothing really. One warrior helping the other.

"I'm assuming you understand." Valentia still couldn't quite intuit what you were saying. "I think you suppose that it's rather silly. Me, a Paladin nearly being defeated by a simple boar."

You shrug and shake your head. Paladins had their heart in the right place, but you never really considered them to be particularly good fighters. Keepers of the peace, yes. But true warriors? That was more on a case by case basis.

"Hmph, you think we're all a joke, don't you?" Valentia groans.

The fire continues to crackle, the boar meat begins to cook and the tantalize smell begins to waft through the air.

"Fine." Valentia stands up and draws her sword. "I'll prove to you a Paladin can be the equal of a Templar! Ready your weapon!"

A sparring match now? Is this girl serious..?!

"Is this idiot serious?!" Naru groans.

"So you'll just insult our honor and not give me the chance to defend it?" Valentia seethes. "Is that it?"

You just level your traditional glare at her, amplified by the presence of your helmet. Valentia hesitates and and begins to visibly sweat before sheathing her sword and sitting back down.

"O-on second thought, this probably isn't the time or place for that sort of thing." She backtracks.

You nod in agreement.

"But, erm..." Valentia looks away for a second before turning back to you. The orange glow from the fire obscured any changes to her face. "You wouldn't mind a spar after we're back in town, would you?"

You shrug. You wouldn't mind at all.

"All right! It's an oath, then!" Valentia finally gives a rare smile.

"Careful there, she might start asking your for marriage next." Naru grunts from across the campsite.

"W-what?!" Valentia stammers. "N-nothing of the sort!"

"Suuuuuure." Naru gives a smug smile, chewing on some freshly cooked pork.

"Hmph." Valentia grunts. "Anyways, I don't think Solaire would be traveling around at night, despite his stubborn attitude. I think we can afford to rest for the night."

You then point to Valentia and give her a hard, inquisitive stare. She seemed to know a lot about Solaire and talked about him rather casually. Not something common that subordinate knights did regarding their masters. Sounds like there was something more.

"W-what? It's nothing!" Valentia frowns. "Q-quit staring at me like that!"

"Hnnnnn?" Naru looks on with amusement.

"That's nothing you need to know about." Valentia scowls as she turns her back to you. "I'm going to get some rest."

Valentia then drapes her blanket around herself and lays down on the grass, her back still turned to you. You feel that you may have pushed her a bit too far.

"Smooth." Naru observes. "Definitely the lady killer."

You just shake your head and lay down to get some rest yourself.

---

"Hey! HEY!"

You're roughly shaken awake and met with Morgan's concerned face. The light blue hue of the sky mean that it was early morning.

"We've got trouble!" Morgan hisses.

You get up and look around. Besides the smoldering remains of the campfire, you could see Nino and Naru waking up. Of Valentia, there was no sight of her.

You look back to Morgan, who already knows what you want to ask.

"Looks like she ran off in the night." Morgan sighs. "Probably why I hear that."

As if on cue, you hear a loud, high pitched squeal of a hog echo through the air. If was definitely a squeal made in anger, not fear.

"Oh that stupid little-" Naru rubs the sleep out of her eyes as she hastily gets up. "C'mon, squirt, we're gonna need that blast magic of yours!"

"Mmmm wake..." Nino mumbles, still out of it.

Not wasting a second you pick up Nino and two her under your arm and hold Romulus in the other. Morgan takes the lead as you and Naru follow her through the woods. Finally, you reach a clearing, where you see Valentia standing in the middle, sword and shield at the ready as she faces down an absolutely massive hog, the size of large barn .

Hogger.

The gargantuan feral hog glares at Valentia, clouds of steam and mucous flowing from its mighty nostrils large enough to swallow a man whole.

And behind Hogger, you could see clouds of dust rising from the trees, and you could feel the ground rumbling. Hogger's herd as answering the call...

Damn, you needed to take down Hogger before the rest of its herd could arrive. Hopefully if you could kill it, then the rest of the herd would disperse.

But, the issue was killing it. You finally set a now fully awake Nino down, toss Romulus to her, and bound forwards with your halberd drawn. Naru hangs back with Nino while Morgan dashes up next to you.

"So what's the plan here?" She asks, an arrow already nocked in her bow.

>FATE POINT USED
>No points remain!

Morgan lets loose several arrows, but they get stuck useless in Hogger's hide, now grown thick with hair and fat from its time in the wild. You charge in, your halberd pointed forward like a spear as you bury the point in between the beast's ribs.

Hogger gives a mighty squeal and swings its tusked head around. You're able to pull your halberd free and back off just in time.

The mighty hog glares at you with a frenzied anger, Valentia completely forgotten by this point. You watch it lower its head, a sure sign that it was going to charge.

However, Nino still needed some more time to prepare a spell, and Valentia needed to recover from this change in events. You had to keep Hogger's attention for a little longer.

With one simple incantation, an orb of fire materializes above Nino's head and a line of fire spears out from it, sweeping across the entire treeline and setting it ablaze. The hogs all skid to a halt in shock and surprise, disrupting their momentum and forcing them to find a way around the inferno.

Meanwhile, Morgan takes aim and fires again, this time her arrow flying straight and true and piercing Hogger's left eye.

The great beast goes berserk in pain and fury as it starts rampaging about, swinging its head wildly from side to side and spinning around in a vain attempt to find its attacker. It's unfortunately this time that Valentia chooses to try and strike, charging in. She tries to drive her blade into Hogger's head, but the beast is too quick, and one sweep of its face sends a tusk hurtling directly at her. Valentia is able to raise her shield to protect her from the blow, but only just. Her shield crumples like paper from the impact, sending the girl flying through the air before landing in the grass with a loud WHUMP.

She doesn't get up.

However, that doesn't stop Hogger from focusing on her downed body, probably believing her to be the reason it's eye was lost...

Damnit, you needed to get to her before Hogger did. Without hesitation, you start sprinting to Valentia's location, running as fast as your bulky armor would allow you to...

I like to imagine that underneath our armor we are either a tiny girl or a buff and scarred musclegirl. But we're probably just the faceless Tank.... Bleh, I can have hopes and dreams as long as we dont take off our helmet I guess.

You're only narrowly able to grab Valentia's body and pull her away just as Hogger charges past. Naru finally manages to catch up to you.

"Let me check her." She grunts, her hands already glowing with healing magic. "Keep that damn pig away from us."

You nod and face Hogger again. Hogger turns to face you, and you both lock eyes to eye for a brief moment before being interrupted.

"FIIIIIIIEEEEND!" You hear a familiar voice roar as a knight in silver armor leaps from the flaming forest, his sword glowing with golden light. "COME AT ME YOU OVERGROWN PORK CHOP!"

Its attention divided, Hogger glances at you and then at Solaire, wondering which target to attack. Finally, it decides to switch targets and charges at Solaire, who doesn't look to have any intention of doing anything other than meet it head on.

However, before any of you could do anything, Solaire strides forward calmly. He clutches his sword with both hands and raises it above his head in a high guard.

"FEEL THE FURY OF THE SUUUUUUN!" Solaire bellows as sword, still glowing a bright gold, seems to grow in size and length, shining brighter and brighter as it does so. The light is so blinding that Hogger skids to a halt, as if entranced by the light.

Naru's eyes open in awe and fear, as if she recognized the attack that Solaire was charging up. Immediately, she ducked down, covering Valentia's body with her own to shield her.

You intuit from Naru's behavior that Solaire was charging up for some sort of wide area attack. Without hesitating, you snatch both Morgan and Nino and throw them to the ground, covering them with your armored body like a shield.

"W-what?!" Morgan yelps.

Romulus, still clutched in Nino's arms, barks in worry.

"That light..." Nino gasps.

And then Solaire finally swings the blade down, creating a flash so bright that even you are forced to close your eyes and avert your gaze. All you can feel is heat and fire, as if Sol itself had fallen from the heavens and right on top of you.

Finally, the heat subsides, and you risk opening your eyes.

Where Hogger used to be was now a charred skeleton. A single silver knight stood among the ashes, his armor and sword still exerting a golden glow.

"W-what the hell was that..." Morgan gasped.

"So that's Solar magic..." Nino mutters in absolute awe.

You, however, had other things on your mind.

The first thing you did was run over to Naru, who was back to tending to Valentia, despite the fact that her clothes were still smoldering from the blast of solar energy.

"Just had the wind knocked out of her." She assures you as you reach her. "And a few broken ribs, but don't tell her that. I'm totally going to oversell it so I can charge her more."

Yeah... she had to be okay if Naru was joking like this.

"Ugggh, w-what?" Valentia winces as she regains consciousness. "What happened? Where's-"

"MY LITTLE SUNSHIIIIIIIIINE!" Solaire cries as he rushes and and picks up Valentia in a big bro hug. "Are you all right? You're not hurt, are you? I know a few healing spells-"

"Dad! Not in front of strangers!" Valentia wails as she wriggles helplessly in Solaire's grip, her face beet red.

Wait.

Dad?

"Oh no you gotta be fucking kidding me." Naru pales.

"Oh my gosh, he's your father?" Nino smiles. "That's so coooool!"

"IT'S A CURSE!" Valentia groans, still locked in her Solaire's hug.

"Now now, Sunshine, that's no way to speak to your father!" Solaire tuts. "Now what are you doing in such dangerous country? You're not ready to face the Frontier yet!"

"That's what I'm supposed to be telling YOU!" Valentia retorts, all semblance of manners completely gone. "And stop calling me that! I have a real naaaaaaaaame!"

"Hahaha, just as energetic as ever!" Solaire chuckles, apparently not even hearing what his unruly daughter was yelling at him. He then turns to you. "Templar! My thanks for looking after my daughter. She's always getting into so much trouble!"

"YOU'RE THE ONE WHO'S ALWAYS GETTING INTO TROUBLE!"

"She's so cute when she's angry!" Nino giggles.

"I don't even know what's going on anymore." Morgan sighs.

"Still, I feel that you deserve some form of reward or compensation for keeping an eye on my daughter." Solaire nods and turns to Hogger's ash pile. "...and for destroying your bounty, as well. Apologies, I sometimes get a bit carried away..."

You shake your head. That wasn't really necessary at all. You then point to the leftover bones and the tusks, which were still rather intact. Those should be sufficient for proof of the reward anyways.

"Haha! I suppose you're right, there!" Solaire nods.

"All that meat... gone..." Naru sighs in resignation.

"Well, can't win them all, I suppose." Morgan shrugs.

"Still, it was fun to see!" Nino smiles.

"Can you let go of me please, dad?" Valentia sighs.

"Why didn't you tell us he was your father?" Morgan asks.

"You didn't tell them?" Solaire sounds genuinely surprised. "Why would you hide such a thing?!"

"Because it's embarrassing!" Valentia groans, her face still red. "And if they knew, they'd treat me differently!"

Now, you weren't quite sure about THAT.

"Hm, is that so?" Solaire pauses. "Well, I think that's quite enough. How about we head back to town and celebrate this victory?"

"Just... just do whatever you want, dad." Valentia sighs, apparently having given up.

You had to admit, you were certainly running into some interesting characters on the Frontier. What else would this unexplored land have in store for you...?
