In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth. Overwatch is doing what it can to ward off the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. But can one small group of vigilantes really protect everyone?

The world needs heroes. All you can do is try to be one of them.

Today has not been a good day.

When the terror alert at the Watchpoint went off, and your strike team flew to western Africa to fight a squad of corrupted Omnics rampaging through a major city to assault a corporate research facility, things started out okay.

You and the other agents handled yourselves pretty well against both sides: the combat frames, machines controlled by a fragment of the malignant AI Anubis, and also the corporate security forces who violently objected to your assistance. You took down a heavy gunner mech with the help of Hanzo and Tracer, even if it cost you your left-hand EM glove. You even managed to extend an olive branch of sorts to the security force when you offered to let Mercy heal their wounded.

Maybe that's why you did what you did, you think, as a bullet cracks into the concrete next to your head. Things were going so well. Everything was right with the world.

Reminder that Tracer is adorable.
>>
>>1463113
Why has she got blood dripping from her mouth?
>>
>>1463131
I can only assume she's biting her lip in an attempt to restrain herself. She wants to pounce.
>>
>>1463112

Surely, you think as you hustle down an alley with your bleeding, insensible teammate in your arms, it wasn't unreasonable to hope that the approaching Helix Security strike team would open to co-operation? That they wouldn't arrest or attack you on sight? They might even have been led by a certain someone, who you keep telling yourself you haven't been longing to see again for years--

Okay, no. It was unrealistic. You screwed up. And now ...

You look down. Tracer's face is growing pale, her breathing shallow. Blood continues to trickle from the wound in her side, along with particles of the violet energy that somehow tracked her through time. Whatever that laser was, it prevented Tracer from rewinding off the injury like she usually does.

She only stayed out of loyalty to you. This is your fault. This is--

No! If you go down that road, you can't help her. Right now there's still a chance. Tracer needs you. Somewhere in this city is a doctor who can help her. You're going to ditch these Helix assholes, find that doctor, save Tracer, and get both of you back to the Watchpoint.

You can do this.

Somehow.

For a few minutes there, you lost the Helix troopers. But they're well-disciplined and prepared for just this type of situation. They fanned out through the city streets, already deserted due to the Omnic attack, and started cutting off your escape routes. Their marksmen have already taken a few shots at you, and their front-line enforcers are starting to close in.

You're starting to run out of options.
>>
>>1463152

The alley ends in a T-intersection. To your left is a long, open street where you can make a break for it at full speed, but without any cover from shooters.

To your right is another alley, crowded with vehicles, transport boxes, and machinery -- slower, but maybe your parkour skills can help with that, and you'd have some cover.

Ahead is a low wall you could scramble over with your wall-run boots, but you have no idea what's on the other side.

You can hear Helix operatives shouting at you from the other end of the alley you just came down. No time for thinking. Neither of the options to your left and right look good to you, so you decide to just go straight forward and over the wall. You don't know what's there, but your luck has been so bad today, you're sure to have good luck eventually. That's how it works, right?

You trigger your boots and leap for the wall, making it most of the way up with one boosted jump. It's tough to wall-run while carrying Tracer, but you manage to get one hand on top of the wall and keep hold of her with the other arm. Bullets crack into the wall by your legs as you quickly scramble over the top.

You don't quite manage to keep your grip on the other side, though, and tumble to the ground. Fortunately you manage to cushion Tracer's landing without hurting yourself too badly, and you land in a nice, soft garden rather than the garbage disposal next to it. That would've left you stinking for the rest of the day, adding insult to injury, which you're really glad you don't have to deal with on top of everything else.

You're in an alley like the one you just left. It's funny, you think as you pick yourself and Tracer up, and start running again, how the modern Africans can build this shining city of perfect order, but can't avoid the warren of rabbit holes and back doors that leaves cracks in the armor for people like you. You kick open a service door, dash through an industrial laundry of huge tumbling washing machines despite the surprised protests of the Omnic workers, and slam your shoulder into a fire exit, emerging back out into the sunlight--

"Freeze!" shouts a Helix soldier. Two of them are right there, their guns pointed at you from a range they couldn't possibly miss from. "Put her down and raise your hands. No sudden movements!"

Shit.
>>
>>1463463

Your mind races, trying to think of something, a ruse or a strategy, anything to get out of this. You could maybe -- no. But what about -- no. If you could just -- no.

You're start to seriously consider whether it's better to die here or take your chances in a Helix cell, when one of the guards just kind of falls over, slumping to the ground.

"Omar?" asks the other guard, trying to keep half an eye on you and also look at his squadmate. "What happened?"

The guard on the ground doesn't reply. He's not dead, and he doesn't look hurt. In fact, he appears to be ...

... sleeping?

Your gaze rapidly flickers around the street, trying to find the source. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot a dark shape quickly dart out from the shadows,

"What the fuck, Omar?" demands the standing guard. "This isn't naptime-- unngh!" The shadowy figure cracks him on the back of the skull, knocking him out.

"I disagree," says the figure, amused.

We haven't see any Talon activity in this city so far--and it wouldn't make sense for them to send a single agent unsupported (unless they're a sniper--which Ana is, but let's disregard that).

Though it does raise up the question of why Ana was here during this Terror attack.
>>
>>1463537

"How can I trust you?" you say.

"You can't," the Shrike says, and points behind you. "But you're out of options."

You look around to see a full squad of Helix soldiers come around the street corner and spot you. "Shit. You're right."

"I can help her, and keep you safe. But you must decide now."

You've already tried the devil you know, and it's not going well. Time for the devil you don't. "Okay. Lead on."

The Shrike leads you into the alley warren, into industrial serviceways and underground chambers, on paths even you might not be able to spot. "You seem to know your way around this place," you say, ducking under a huge ventilation duct. "Come to the under-warrens of Abidjan often? Or maybe you were expecting something like this to happen here?"

"Just the wisdom of age," the person says. "I've spent many years finding my way into and out of places I'm not expected to be."

You try to think of some way to check if she's affiliated with Talon. You can't come up with anything, so eventually you just bluntly ask, "So are you with Talon? Have I just jumped out of a frying pan and into a fire?"

"If I were, don't you think I'd have simply killed the two of you, or crippled you and left you for Helix? Instead I'm risking my life to lead you to safety. I understand your skepticism, young man, but a little gratitude wouldn't hurt." The Shrike turns around briefly, the three lines on the helmet glowing. "And if you'd been paying attention to world events, you'd know I'm no friend of Talon."

"Wait. That incident at Giza a few weeks ago, before the whole Anubis thing. Hakim's compound. That was you?"

"It was mostly the work of a friend. I just bailed him out when he got into trouble. That's another thing the two of you have in common, now."

/shrug
>>
>>1463718

"I appreciate it, despite my skepticism," you say. "Thanks for your help. Where are we going?"

"Someplace safe, where I can treat your friend."

"She's hurt. Maybe bad. Can you help her?"

"I've learned a great deal about medicine over the years. And I've got the tech for the job. Made by a woman of your acquaintance, actually."

"You mean--?"

"Yes. Dr. Ziegler's inventions were always incredibly powerful tools for saving lives, even if ..." The Shrike trails off. "Anyway. I'll get her fixed up."

"You know who we are, then," you say. "You seem well-informed, so I guess that's not surprising. I've heard of your reputation. A lot of big-shot crooks think you're a big thorn in their side." You've heard the whispers about the Shrike for years (in fact, they may have been the original inspiration for the helmet-and-hood look you adopted.) But this is the first time you've met them, or seen them up close.

At this distance, you can tell that she's a woman, although the helmet and voice changer prevent anything further. You doubt you'll get much of an answer, but you ask anyway, "Anything you can tell me about who you are? Why you're helping us?"

"All you need to know," says the Shrike, opening a door,"Is that I have your best interests at heart. Both Overwatch in general, and you in particular, young man." She steps inside into a rust-stained, deactivated mechanical room. In the corner is a cot and a few personal effects. This room must be her hideout. She points to the cot. "Lay her down there."

(Continued)
>>
>>1463868
Maybe, but it just seems... dim. If she wants to establish trust and tell us, she can do that unprompted. For all we know, it's just a good samaritan situation, but with vigilantes, where it's not going to be a long-term relationship that needs 'trust', just her deciding to help out people in need. But eh, you do you, I'll do me, neither of us are feasibly going to convince the other.
>>
>>1463905

You get Tracer set up on the cot. As you do, she flickers back into consciousness for a few moments. "Logan ... what's ..." Her face tightens in pain. "Am I gonna ...?"

"You're not going to die," you whisper fiercely. You take her hand in both of yours and grip it tightly. "You're going to be fine. This woman will fix you up. We're going get back to the Watchpoint and see Winston and Mercy and everybody. You just hold on, okay? You hear me?"

She doesn't respond except to moan in pain. It's too much for her. The Shrike shakes her head, then sits down on the fold-out camping chair next to the cot. She activates a tool that shines a thin beam of light into Tracer's pupil. "Lights out, sweetie." Dazed, Tracer quiets down, and peacefully drifts to sleep.

"That's not one of Mercy's tools," you say. "What the hell was that?"

"I can't be fussy about where I find my equipment these days," the Shrike says. She takes out a of biotic scanner and field projector, clearly an older version of one of the tools Mercy uses on you often in the medbay, and begins to patch up Tracer's injury. You hear a sigh come from behind the helmet. "Poor Lena. Always getting herself in trouble."

"How long until she's back on her feet?" you ask. "Helix is going to be pulling the dragnet tight soon."

"We'll be safe here," the Shrike says, pointing to a nearby device, a small cube with a series of lights blinking in a pattern.

"A scramblecube? Nice. I used to have one of those." A scramblecube should keep the Helix scanners from penetrating this area, and they'll have a tough time following you through that maze you came through. So you've got some time, if not forever. "If they do find you, though, and they know you helped us, Helix won't be happy with you. They might come after you."

"They can get in line," she replies curtly.

"Damn," you say. "You're quite a lady. Seem to be well-informed. You obviously know a lot about us. On a first name basis with Tracer there, apparently. What's your deal? You an Overwatch fan?"

"I'm not the one who had every action figure when I was a boy," the Shrike says, an amused tone creeping in under the voice modulator.

Fear and a little embarassment grips you. "Do you -- how did you --?"

"I know a great many things, young man. Both about Overwatch, and about you in particular. I know about the young son of the infamous King executive family, who mysteriously vanished from his citadel one night six years ago. You've had quite a journey since then, haven't you? I even heard recently that you were the one who broke into Xanadu. I'm impressed by your audacity, if not your judgement."

"Damn." You laugh nervously. "I thought I covered my tracks a little better than that over the years."

"You did. I'm just quite thorough when I research someone."

"So ... what else do you know?"

"If you're worried I'll tell the team about certain things you'd rather stay in the past, I won't. I don't plan on interfering with what you're doing, Seeker. After all, someone has to carry the flag, and try to protect that crew of misfits from themselves. In fact, I think your work in doing so thus far is commendable."

"At least that makes one of us," you say, bitterness creeping into your voice.

"You've kept everyone alive. Sometimes that's all you can ask for."

You look down at Tracer. "If you hadn't helped us today, that might not be true anymore."

"Then let's be glad I did, shall we?"

(Continued)
>>
As the Shrike works, you pace nervously up and down in the mechanical room, in the small spaces between the pipes and ducts. "Are you sure it's working?" you ask for the third time.

The Shrike says, "Settle down, young man. Tracer will pull through. Have some faith in Dr. Ziegler's tools, if not in me."

"I'm sorry, it's just ... it's my fault she's like this." You slump down on the ground, leaning against the wall. "I screwed up, and she paid for it. I'm no commander. I'm not cut out to be in charge of anything." You hold your head in your hands, reliving the moment when Tracer was shot. The moment she came out of rewind, the wound still there. The look of horror on her face.

"Hmm." The Shrike taps the chin of her helmet, thinking. "You know, Commander Morrison used to say the same thing sometimes."

You look up. "Really? But on the vids he always seemed so--"

"Strong? Courageous? Unshakeable? In public, and to the troops, yes. He was all of those things. Behind closed doors he had doubts, just like any other man. He made good decisions for bad reasons, and bad decisions for good reasons. He led Overwatch through a generation, but in the end he couldn't stop it from destroying itself. Some even say he was responsible for it."

"What about you?" you ask. "What do you say?"

"I say that your friend is just about stabilized. In a few minutes I can take you out of here. I know a route to the edge of the city. Perhaps you can contact your friends once you leave Helix's jamming field."

The Shrike finishes putting away her tools, then turns around and looks at you. "Further, I would say that, despite your success, you've also made some pretty serious mistakes getting here, Seeker. The fact that you and Lena are here, now, is a result of one of those."

"I know!" you say, and groan. "I shouldn't be in charge! Anyone else should be instead of me. I can't--"

"Wait." The Shrike holds out her hand to cut you off. "I also say that leadership is a burden. Jack Morrison had years of experience handling such a weight, and others to share it with him. Gabriel Reyes and ... and others. The only people in a position to help you are a sentient computer, a fragile old man, and a medic who'd rather be a pacifist. The others are less than fit for command. Ask Mercy to show you her recordings sometime. You'll understand."

"Her recordings? I don't --"

"What I mean is," the Shrike cuts you off. "You're inexperienced and haven't had the support a new leader should have. So you can't be too harsh with yourself. There's also no-one else to take this burden from you, even if you wanted. You can't give up, and you can't pass this on. It's your weight to bear, Seeker, although I hope you find someone to help you with it soon."

You laugh. "You're not very good at pep talks, are you?"

"I say what people need to hear, whether they like it or not."

"Fair enough."

(Continued)

Carrying Tracer again, this time sleeping peacefully, you follow the Shrike as she guides you through the labyrinth of Abidjan's underways and service tunnels. As you do, you can't help thinking about who this mysterious benefactor of yours is. What kind of woman would know this much inside information about the agents of Overwatch, both the old and the new?

Eventually you emerge into the sunlight near the city limits. Beyond, you can see the desert shimmering in the heat.

"The jamming field ends a short distance into the desert. You can try to link up with your friends there. Oh -- one more thing." She hands you a dust-colored camo cover. It should blend into the desert, both to the human eye and to scanners. "This should keep you safe from prying eyes while you wait. And it'll stop Lena from getting sunburned."

"Thanks. I owe you one."

"I'll add you to the list," she says, amused.

In my opinion we shouldn't know who she is.we can almost certanly guess she's form Overwatch, but not who she is.
>>
>>1464354

She was the XO to Jack Morrison--Soldier 76. Ana Amari. Part of the OG strike team that helped stop the Omnic Crisis. She helped lead Overwatch up until a botched hostage rescue op where she got an eye shot out by a young Widowmaker.

Her daughter is Fareeha Amari--Pharah.
>>
>>1464374
Who else could she be that knew Morrison so closely? Reyes? Gerard?
>>
>>1464386
Yeah it's pretty obvious with what she is saying that she knew Jack personally. Thus she is Ana Amari.
>>
>Is there some way I can repay you? >I Hope I see you again, under better circumstances.

"Come with us," you say. "You know what we do. You can help us."

"I can't," she says. "Maybe someday. Right now, there are others who need me."

"It's not just about us. There's a serious threat on the horizon. One of the god-minds is on the loose. He's infected the net. And he's behind this attack--"

"I know. Our old friend Anubis is restless, and wants out of his cage." The Shrike looks off into the desert. "Would you believe me if I told you that he is not the biggest threat the world faces?"

"What?" You can't help saying in disbelief. "Are you serious? We haven't figured out just how fast Anubis is assembling himself, but it looks like less than a year before he finishes. Maybe just a few months. What could be bigger than stopping the artificial intelligence that wants to wipe out humanity?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out," she says. "When I have proof, I'll send it to you and the team. Right now, I guess you'll just have to trust me. It's worked out well for you so far, hasn't it?"

"Yeah, I guess it has. We both owe you our lives. Is there some way I can repay you?"

"When I think of something, I'll let you know."

"I guess I'll see you then. Hopefully under better circumstances."

"Good-bye, Logan. And good luck." The Shrike turns to leave and begins to walk back down the shadowed corridor you came from.

It has to be her, you think. Who else could know all this?

"Wait!" You call after her. She stops, looks over her shoulder. "You're -- you're Ana Amari, aren't you? Morrison's executive officer. Fareeha's mother."

After some hesitation, she replies, "I'm no-one, young man." She starts walking again, and disappears into the shadows. "Just a ghost."

"What happened?" you shout. "Why did you go missing? Everyone thought you were dead!" You think about running after her, but you've got Tracer to take care of. Damn.

You'll have to let the Shrike go, whether or not she's Ana Amari, returned from the dead.

(Continued)
>>
>>1464465

You hear a gasp from Tracer as she regains consciousness. "What -- what happened--?"

"Hey," you say. "A lot of stuff happened. For now--"

You both realize at the same time that you're still carrying her.

"D-do you think you can stand up?" you ask.

Tracer laughs nervously. "I'll try." You help her get on her own feet, and she seems steady enough. She gently touches the place where she was shot. "Still feels like I had a run-in with a particularly angry desk corner, but that's all."

"I'm just glad you're okay," you say, feeling a flood of relief. "If you feel good enough to walk, we should get moving. We've got to head out into the desert a bit to try to contact the team."

"Yeah, I'll be all right, I think." The two of you start walking away from the city. Tracer runs her fingers through her bushy brown hair, trying to think. "I can't really remember -- those Helix wankers shot me, and then you were carrying me, and then -- what happened, Seeker?"

"The Shrike saved us," you say.

"The who now?"

"She's some kind of vigilante," you say. "Does the same sort of thing Overwatch does, but in the shadows, by herself. I think she's--"

You're going to tell her your suspicions about the Shrike's identity. That she might be the lost captain, Ana Amari, MIA and presumed dead years ago. But you stop yourself. Tracer's not really the kind of person to keep a secret like that. The whole team will hear. Some of them will insist on trying to track the Shrike down, when she's made it clear she doesn't want to get involved right now. They'll argue, and the subject will drag up the old days, and old wounds. It'll get complicated.

"She's what?" asks Tracer

"I think she's a really good person," you say. "She stuck her neck out to rescue us from Helix, brought us to a safe place, and patched you up. We both owe her one."

You walk for a few more moments, heading out into the sun-soaked badlands outside the city.

"Hey, Lena. I just want to say I'm--"

"Don't even start," she warns you.

"You have every right to be mad, but I--"

"No, I mean, don't try to apologize. I chose to be there. I knew the risks. I got cocky and relied too hard on my rewind. I don't want you havin' any nightmares over this one, orright?" She chuckles. "I do still think you're a right wanker for imaginin' that Helix would just want to have a nice chin-wag."

"All right, I get it," you say, raising your hands in surrender. "It was a little optimistic. I still think we've got to get through to Pharah somehow. I know she'll help us if she can. And I bet others in Helix will too, if they know what we're up against."

"Maybe you're right," says Tracer. "But -- and I can't believe I'm the one telling somebody this -- you're gonna have to be careful."

"Point taken," you say. You look around. "All right, I think this is far enough. I'll see if we're out of the jamming field."

As Tracer sets up the camoflage shade, you activate the encryption codes Winston gave you to access the comm satellite. "Orca, are you receiving me?"

Athena replies immediately. "We are receiving you, Seeker."

"Are you all right?" asks Mercy urgently. "Is Lena with you?"

"We're both fine," you say. "We had a little help. I'll tell you about it later. Are you still nearby?"

"We are," she says. "Seeker, I'm so sorry we had to take off like that, there were Helix troopers firing at us and--"

"It's all right, Mercy. I'm the reason we were in that situation in the first place, after all. Anyway, me and Tracer are just outside the city, in the badlands."

"What are your coordinates?" Winston asks. "We'll come pick you up right away."

You tell them, and Athena says the Orca is on its way. "I calculate a high probability we will retrieve you both before Helix response."

"Just stay safe until we get there," Mercy says.

You and Tracer spend a quiet few minutes watching the blue skies for signs of the Orca. After a little while, the transport craft appears, curving around a pillar of rock, levelling out as it flies in your direction.

"Quite a day, huh?" says Tracer, looking at you. "We saved all those people from the Anubis-bots, so I'd say it all worked out pretty well in the end.

"Yeah," you say, meeting her eyes. "I guess it did."

As you watch the Orca land, you're thinking about the reprimands you're about to get. Harsh stares, cold words, maybe even a spot demotion. Even though you were never really promoted in the first place.

"We're not listening to your hare-brained ideas anymore," Mercy says coldly in your imagination.

"I don't know why we let a criminal on the team in the first place," growls Winston.

"The sooner you get rid of him, the better," Hanzo says arrogantly.

At this point, you're just hoping that Winston doesn't go into primal rage mode again.

The bay door opens, and you and Tracer board the Orca. The rest of the team gathered in the main area. You get ready to face the music, expecting reprimand and rebuke.

Instead--

"Seeker! Lena!" Winston bounds up to you and grabs you both, one in each arm, raising you both off your feet and into the air as he hugs you.

"Urk--" Tracer shoves at his huge fingers. "Winston -- please -- gorilla strength --"

"Oh, yes." Winston puts you down and looks away to adjust his glasses, embarassed. "I, uh, I'm just happy to see you're all right."

"Welcome back, you two," Mercy says warmly.

"Hi," Mei says. "I hope everything went okay."

"Not exactly," you admit. "But we made it out in one piece, and sometimes that's enough. I, uh." You rub the back of your neck. "I thought you guys would be super pissed at me."

Winston, Mercy and Mei look at each other. A laugh escapes them, then they look back to you. "We were," admits Winston. "But we're happier to see you alive and unharmed."

Leaning against the far wall, Hanzo gives you a brief nod of manly acknowledgement. That's about all you're going to get from him, you suppose. You return the gesture.

Winston grumbles, "I'm not happy that you put Tracer in danger, of course, but--"

"It was her decision, though, wasn't it?" Mercy tweaks Tracer by the ear like a child. "She stayed behind because she wanted to, because they're both as reckless as each other."

"Ow ow ow! C'mon, Angie, really!"

Mercy chuckles and rests her hand gently on Tracer's shoulder. "Good to see you, Lena. Are you injured?"

"Been better, but I'll be orright. Can't remember some of what happened to be honest, but Seeker can tell you about it."

"Yes, I'll make sure to ask him about it in detail," Mercy says, looking at you. She's still smiling, but her eyes are ice cold. "We'll have a nice long conversation about it back at the Watchpoint."

Gulp.

Putting that aside for the moment, you say to the team:

>Thanks for the warm welcome.

"First of all, let's get out of here before Helix finds us," you say. "Don't want to go through this whole rigamarole again because of our tearful reunion, after all. Tracer? Athena?"

"Headin' up," says Tracer, blinking up the stairs to the cockpit.

"Preparing for fast takeoff," Athena says. "Everyone grab onto something."

With a jolt, the Orca boosts into the air. The craft banks slightly as it curves north, towards the Watchpoint.

When the motion of travel settles down, you stand up and walk to the center of the room, muting your sigh under your helmet as you do.

"All right, everyone." You push back your hood and trigger your helmet's release mechanism. With a hiss of depressurization, it comes loose.

You wish you were a little less sweaty for this, you think as you pull off your helmet, revealing your face to Winston, Mei and Hanzo for the first time. Your hair probably looks awful right now. You take a moment to try and flatten it down before continuing.

"I took a longshot, and it failed big time. I was concentrating on what I hoped would happen, and not what was likely to happen. I screwed up. I'm sorry." You shrug awkwardly, suddenly embarassed without your helmet. "That's all. You can shout at me now."

The group looks at each other, hesitating.

"I don't think it was so bad," offers Winston. "The actual mission was a complete success, right? You just made a rather, uh, optimistic decision right at the end. And nothing bad come of it in the end."

"We all make mistakes, Seeker," says Mei. "Cheer up!"

"All right, if you say so. Thanks for the support, you two."

"I think you're a fool," says Hanzo. "But I always have."

"Tell me what you really think, pal," you say, rolling your eyes. "All right, I'm going to see how Tracer's doing in the cockpit."

You pass by Mercy on the way, who hasn't said anything. "Doc?" you ask quietly.

"Later," she says, still smiling, not looking at you.

(Continued)

>>1465915

You flop down into the co-pilot's seat, thinking.

You even did fine on the actual mission, you tell yourself. We stopped the Anubis-bots, saved all the civilians we encountered, and even helped out those corporate security guys. We stopped a combat overseer program from ending up in the claws of Anubis -- imagine if from now on those combat frames had advanced squad tactics?

You just messed things up at the end. You took the long shot, thinking about what you hoped would happen, and not what was likely to happen. And before that, you shot down Athena without even discussing it with her. Maybe you should have trusted her more than that.

You put your helmet back on for a minute and set it to mute your voice to the outside.

"I should have talked to you about it, Athena," you say. "I just got scared. An AI package designed to command robot soldiers to oppress humans? Even if I trusted you completely -- which I have to admit, I don't, or rather can't -- not yet -- you've been vulnerable to enemy hacks before. If that information leaked, I don't know what would happen. Even so, I should have discussed it with you instead of just ordering you to delete it. I'm sorry."

"Apology accepted, Seeker. I understand your concerns. Giving any type of military function to artificial intelligence has historically gone badly for humanity. I also analyzed you were under a great deal of stress at the time. Command decisions made under time pressure and repeated electric shocks will do that."

"No kidding," you say, massaging your left hand. At least your broken gauntlet has stopped shocking you for now. "So no hard feelings?"

"No hard feelings, Seeker."

"I'd still like it if you could help us out more with combat command," you say. "Maybe we can look into that. There's got to be a way for you to get a solid grasp on tactics and strategy without having a kit installed that's custom-made for AI-controlled frames to stomp their jackboots on humans. A kinder, gentler tactical analysis pack, if you get me."

"I get you," says Athena. "I have learned certain parameters simply from my original scan of the pack. Perhaps with some exploring we can complete our own version which will better suit our purpose."

"Sounds good to me. So that's at least one dumb decision I can backtrack on." You remember the Helix dropship landing, the troops pouring out, and how badly you had hoped Pharah would appear in that shadowy doorway. The sickening drop in your stomach as you realized she wasn't going to. "You probably think I'm dumb for trying to talk to Helix, too."

"It was an extremely low probability action," Athena says. "But I understand and sympathize with your desire to seek reconciliation and alliance with Helix against Anubis."

"Thanks for being nice to me about it, at least. How are things back at the Watchpoint?"

"I understand that there was some alarm when news arrived that the Orca had taken off without you and Tracer. Apparently Reinhardt was barely restrained from taking the Aurora into the air and coming after you."

"Since he can't fly the damn thing, that's good that they stopped him." You imagine Genji, McCree, Torbjorn and Brigitte all trying to hold back the mammoth Reinhardt, each clinging to one gigantic limb.

"Indeed. I have contacted them to let them know you're safe and on your way. It sounds as though that has quieted things down."

"That's good. Last thing I needed is Reinhardt crashing into the Mediterranean." You look out the window at the Sahara desert. "Any chance I can take a vacation for a few days after this?"

"Perhaps," Athena says. "Other than my proposed venture of hacking the executive terminal in Singapore, your schedule is clear for the next several days."

"I'm glad I have you as my secretary, Athena, as well as my accountant. And my communications expert. And information analyst. And who knows what else."

"I am happy to be of assistance."

You take off your helmet again, this time grateful for the fresh air, and watch the dunes pass by as the Orca flies north.

You run a hand through your sweat-soaked hair, grateful for the Orca's air conditioning.

The new cockpit is a lot bigger and has a lot more features than that little cabinet on the Aurora you and Tracer squeezed into a few dozen times. You could almost call this a bridge. There's extra chairs stationed below the pilot and co-pilot, presumably for comms officers or something. You don't even know.

It doesn't have quite the same comfy feeling as the Aurora's cockpit. Even so, there's a pleasant familiarity now to the feeling of sitting beside Tracer as she flies you home after a (mostly) successful mission.

"Chattin' with Athena?" Tracer asks you.

"Yeah," you say. "I think I pissed her off back there too, but we worked it out."

"Good to hear it," she says. "You two get along pretty well, seems like."

"I have to admit, she's a lot more polite and reasonable than most of the humans I've known over the years."

"Well, whatever else happened out there, I'm just glad we saved all those people. You weren't there to see this part on the left flank, but some of those civvies were about to buy it. If we'd got there just a few minutes later, who knows what might've happened?"

"Hey, so uh ... I'm glad you stuck with me back there, Tracer. I'm sorry things ended up such a mess. But it means a lot to me that you had my back. So, thanks."

"You're welcome, luv. We're a team, y'know? We gotta look out for each other."

"That said," you add, "Let's not get into a situation like that ever again, okay?"

"No argument here," Tracer says. "I got meself shot by a time-beam, so I expect if anything'll teach me a little caution, that'd be it."

"Well, we both learned a lesson today, I suppose. Let's just call it a win and move on. Oh, and the next time we go up against Helix, or some other corporate stooge PMC, we'll have to be ready."

"What do you mean?" she asks.

"I mean they had tech specifically designed to kill you, Tracer. You're going to have to be careful going up against them again. And if the corps developed that for you, It's a safe assumption that they're working on countermeasures for all of you. All the original members. They might even be ready now."

"Bloody hell," she says. "I guess you're right. We'd better warn the team properly when we get back. Try to work out a plan of action."

You sink down into your chair and sigh. More to do. That vacation might have to wait a bit. "At least we've got a few days off after this. Anything you want to do?"

"I don't rightly know," she admits. "I'm still kinda tense from the mission, to be honest. Hard to think about that. Right now I just want to nap, have a pint, and catch up on my telly programs, in no particular order. I'm sure I'll think of something a little more exciting later."

"Well, you know where to find me."

"Hey, so Athena tells me that Reinhardt tried to come rescue us."

"Really?" Tracer asks. "How was he gonna do that?"

"Try to fly the Aurora. Apparently the whole team had to restrain him."

Tracer giggles. "I hope there's security footage of that. I can just imagine them hangin' on his arms and legs as he drags them through the base. What do you think he said? "My comrades need me!"" she says, trying to imitate Reinhardt's voice. "I must fight to my last breath!""

You laugh. "Yeah, or something like "With courage and honor, there will always be a way!" Never mind you have to somehow get over the Strait of Gibraltar and most of the Sahara Desert without being able to pilot your aircraft."

"Good old Rein," Tracer says.

"We're lucky to have him."

"We're lucky he's even still breathing, to be honest," says Tracer. "That old ticker in his chest has stopped a few times, y'know. Mercy brought him back with some kind of ... I don't know. A Mercy thing. We never did keep records, but I'm fairly certain that if we did, he'd have the highest "Damage Healed By Mercy" count by a country mile. He never hesitated to throw himself in front of a teammate, whether or not his shield was functioning. All those scars built up over the years." She shakes her head. "I don't know where we'd be without him. The old team or the new one."

"Me neither," you admit.

The Orca crosses over the blue waters of the Strait of Gibraltar, heading for home.

The Orca settles into the expanded hangar, alongside the Aurora. The rest of the team is there to greet you as you disembark.

"It was tough, but we made it," you say. "The mission was a success, and that's what's important. I did learn a hard lesson or two. Oh, and there's this," you add, showing your fucked up arm and shield gear.

"Great," Brigitte says, coming forward to examine it. She holds your arm up to show it to Torbjorn, who shakes his head in disgust. "I guess I know what we're doing on our day off: figuring out how the hell to repair an Ares M-Tech gauntlet. That aside, I really am thrilled to see you back, but -- is it true that Helix attacked you?"

"Yeah," Tracer says. "They did. Tried to arrest us, and then when I wouldn't play along -- kapow! They zapped me with some kinda time gun. I couldn't even rewind the damage off. Gave me a real start, I can tell you that much."

"Well, shoot." McCree lifts up his hat to scratch at the hair underneath. "This situation is gettin' complicated."

Torbjorn growls. "I knew we'd have to deal with them sooner or later. Without Overwatch around, they've become the new kings of the castle. Everybody's dependin' on them for protection against Omnics and Talon, and that gives them control. The last thing they'll want is for us to come back, and show everyone there's another way."

Brigitte says, "But what are we going to do? If the corps are developing weapons specifically to target you guys, then--"

"All right, everyone," Mercy cuts in smoothly. "Athena, Winston and Mei can give you the rest of the information from the mission in the briefing room."

"What?" Mei looks over, startled. "Me?!"

"Yes, you," Mercy continues, unruffled. "You're a proper field agent now, so it's about time you started doing these things. I myself must attend to Tracer and Seeker in the medbay right away."

"But I'm not inj--" you start to say.

"Right. Away." Without waiting for another word, Mercy walks off in the direction of the medbay. Tracer shrugs at you, then follows after her.

You say to the group, "Yeah, so now's when the Doc gives my ass a beating. I'll see you all at the bar later."

"Good luck, kid," says McCree.

Feeling like a condemned man, you follow Mercy and Tracer to the medbay.

Mercy leaves you waiting while she works on Tracer. She doesn't look in your direction, just focuses on her task. You drum your fingers nervously, wondering which of these medical implements she'd use if she wanted to torture someone.

"I think we're just about done here, Lena," Mercy says.

"Thanks, Ang." Tracer yawns hugely, oblivious to the tension in the room. "Mind if I take a nap here? I feel a bit knackered."

"You're more than welcome," Mercy says with a kind smile.

Tracer rolls over and is soon lightly snoring.

Mercy stands up and runs her hands over the plates of her armored skirt. She turns in your direction, and approaches you with an unreadable expressoin.

"Look, Doc," you say. "I know you're mad, and I just want to say--"

Mercy cuts you off by throwing her arms around your chest and hugging you tightly.

Shocked, everything else gets driven out of your head. For a long moment, all you can think about is that Mercy, Angela Ziegler, the beautiful blonde and gracious healer whose poster adorned your wall, has her arms around you right now.

As suddenly as it started, she withdraws. You try to figure out what to say. "Damn. Doc, I didn't know--"

SMACK! Mercy slaps you in the face, as hard as she can.

"Geez," you say, rubbing your stinging cheek. "Talk about mixed messages."

"What were you thinking?" she demands in a voice of quiet, intense anger. "How could you take a risk like that?"

"Look, I know you're angry. I put Tracer's life in danger. I could've ordered her away, but I didn't. I put the whole team in danger by not just leaving right away. I just--"

"Ugh!" Mercy throws her hands to the sky in exasperation. "Are all men this dense?! I'm talking about you, Seeker. I'm talking about you risking your own life. Don't you understand? You're not some lone wolf anymore, breaking into tech-vaults on a rich kid's whim. Can't you understand what you mean to this team already? How much they've come to rely on you?" She folds her arms. "What do you think would've happened to the team if you'd died out there, Seeker?"

"I, uh ..."

"Like it or not, you've got responsibilities now. Or maybe you don't. You're a volunteer, after all. You could always leave." Mercy slumps down into a nearby chair, suddenly seeming weary. "You wouldn't be the first to leave us behind, after all. That would be another thing you and Jack have in common."

>I'm not going anywhere.

"I'm not going anywhere," you say. "I'll do what it takes. This wasn't what I signed on for, but now that I'm here, I'm seeing it all the way through to the end."

"Good," Mercy says.

"The thing is -- I need help. I can't do this alone."

"You're right," Mercy sighs. "You have to understand, Seeker. I'm angry at myself as well. At all of us. The original team, I mean. We haven't been able support you like we should. I guess we all hoped you could just show up and be the new Jack Morrison. But nobody could. He couldn't himself, at your age, with your inexperience, and with no-one to help but Athena." Mercy sighs heavily. "But there's no-one else who even can help you. Ana and Gabriel are no longer with us. It's you and Athena, Seeker, or nobody."

"Well, Athena and I have a few ideas on the subject of our partnership, so that at least is working out. What did you mean about Jack? How he left?"

"Surely you've heard the stories. The mysterious "Soldier 76", rumored to be Jack Morrison, Overwatch commander, returned from the grave. I know that you and Tracer encountered him, that first night you met. And he turned his back on us. Whether this Soldier is Jack, or he died in the base explosion in Switzerland, it doesn't matter right now. He's not with us. We're on our own."

"Someone else on the team has to be able to help me out with command, though, right? What about Reinhardt? The whole team relies on him. They'd look to him for orders."

"Reinhardt WAS a fantastic strike commander. Ten years ago. Today he is still bold, courageous, and unyielding, but --" Mercy brings up a bio-scan of Reinhardt's brain. You're not sure what a healthy brain looks like, but this probably isn't it. "Presenile dementia. Either age has caught up with him earlier than anticipated, or simply a result of all those blows to the helmet. That's not even to mention his kidneys, his spinal condition, or the variety of other health conditions he battles on a daily basis. I fight my own ethics every time I certify him for combat. The team needs him. But we can't afford to add to his responsibilities."

"Damn," you say, sitting down. "I knew he was in a bad way, but I didn't realize just how much."

"As for the rest of the team, well ..." Mercy laughs bitterly. "Did you know that, in addition to the old team's field medic, I was their psychologist? I performed all the evaluations, including the leadership qualifications test. The short version is they did poorly. I've still got the recordings around here somewhere. I'll show them to you sometime, if you need further convincing."

(Continued)
>>
>>1467534

"I guess that just leaves Athena," you say. "Unless ... what about you? I know you prefer to stay on the sidelines, helping us or anyone else who gets hurt, but you're probably the most level-headed person on this base. If you were by my side, correcting me when I made a big screw-up, I think we'd make a really good team."

"I can't," Mercy says, suddenly quiet. "I can't take a command."

"Why not? I know medics don't normally take a command role, but think about it. You're in a good position physically on the battlefield to watch everybody. The team's got your respect, they'll listen to you. All you need is--"

Mercy stands up and slams her hands down on the table. "Enough! Don't offer me that kind of power, Seeker! I don't want it! I musn't! Don't you understand?"

The angel looks down at her hands. A choked sob escapes her. "I already have too much power over life and death. I'm barely even a human anymore."

It takes a little guts to actually step close to her, reach out, and put your arms around her, but right now you're just thinking of Mercy as a friend who needs help. You can feel her slim, feminine body under the plates of the Valkyrie suit. Her fingers tighten on the cloth of your jacket. For a few moments, the two of you stay like that, just holding each other.

"All right," she says. "I'm all right now, Seeker." She lets go, and so do you, taking a step back. Your heart is pounding a little.

"Look," you say, trying to put your thoughts in order. "I don't really know what you mean about not being human. All I know is you're a great medic and a great person. A lot of people are grateful for you. Whatever you're afraid of, you're still the same Angela that we know and -- and love. If you want to talk to me about this sometime, you can tell me anything you want. I'll listen.

"Right now, I can tell you need some space, so I'm going to get out of here. You can show me those psych evaluations another time."

I've made a pastebin for your upgrades for Athena, the Watchpoint, and the Ecopoint: https://pastebin.com/a0sgZQ2g

Your current funding level is 8, so you have a little bit of cash to play around with. Go ahead and vote and discuss your next round of upgrades. I'll have your choices start building at the beginning of next thread.

Regarding Hanzo, I'm not sure what I think about offering the XO position to a person who keeps insisting he hasn't actually joined the team. But I do think that next thread is a good time for a conversation, and sparring might make it interesting. Perhaps his character will evolve in an unexpected direction. We shall see.

>Data Recovery: Retrieve Mei's climate data from the Ecopoint computers.
>Habitation: Repaired field generators and weather shielding make the base habitable again.

and 2 points in reserve in case unexpected expenditure was called for, although maybe another upgrade to darknet analysis would be called for.
>>
>>1467977
Darknet Analysis (2): Monitor enemy activity and communications. May predict events before they occur.

Command Center (2): Enhanced mission monitoring equipment.
Forge (2): Access to advanced gear.
Medbay (2): High-tier medical equipment.
>>
>>1467977
>Firewall (2)
>Defense Turret
those are needed, no way to go without. Other than that I'd really like to go for
>Forge (2)
because raising effectiveness in the field is good and better equipment might help us deal with things like that Tachyon beam, especially once we get a few engineers and scientists.
>Dormitory
Because our agents should be well rested

I'm decidedly undecided on the other two points

>>1468113
I don't think Ecopoint is that valuable YET. Let's get a stable base before we expand, or we'll end up overextending ourselves.
>>
>>1468113
>>1468115
>>1468116
Remember the tactical analysis will be what lets Athena do combat stuff.
>>
>>1468121
>I'm decidedly undecided on the other two points
is especially because of that. I want her to help us but I don't want to go back on what we discussed so fast.
>>
>>1468121
There is a reason I didn't vote for it anon.

>>1468138
So... why don'y you want a re-roll?

This is us making our own version that doesn't have terror tactics in it. That was why I was against the previous version.

oh, so that's what you meant. yeah, I can see that.
>>
>>1468116
>I don't think Ecopoint is that valuable YET.
In its present state it won't be valuable at all.
It's by making it at least habitable that it becomes an asset.

Also it's not overextending to set up a location where we can hide if UN or corps crack down on Gibraltar or it gets otherwise compromised.

I'm of the opinion that making the ecopoint base viable at least as a safehouse is much better investment than any single security upgrade to Gibraltar.
>>
>>1468143
>>1468142
The vast majority of it was voted no. I refuse to suddenly go back on it, because we won't have a better program and I would rather we spend the cash on other stuff.
>>
>>1468155
The vast majority was worried about how raven king sold it as almost a rampancy program that would corrupt Athena and the terror attacks.

You're not looking at the whole picture...

>Darknet Analysis (2): Monitor enemy activity and communications. May predict events before they occur.
>Firewall (2): Improves Athena's defense against hacking.

>Dormitory: Improved residences for agents.
>Containment: A secure facility for prisoners.

>Defense Turrets: Basic automated machine guns.
>Blast Doors: Enemy breach charges are less effective.

>>1468150
>>1468167
I personally feel like we should set up our main base more before worrying about a safehouse.

You're worried about security for Athena, but you're not even voting for an enhanced firewall?

Just because the program is not as good as the one that was destroyed doesn't mean we shouldn't have it. That's not a logical argument.

It's like saying we can't buy shoes because we can't have Air Jordans.

>>1468186
I'm not voting on the firewall, Because I'm voting for something that is already to be hacked.

I'd be inclined to agree if our primary base was in less precarious position and had some paper protection from international retribution.
I'm not sure whether it's glacial bureaucratic procedures, power balance between actors or public opinion, or just plot armor that keeps everyone but Talon from storming the place to put the criminal upstarts down, but I wouldn't count on it lasting forever - and when it does, no amount of fortification will be enough for anything else but buying time for us to escape.

Spending 1 blizbuck to have a place to escape to seems only prudent.
(and another 1 for {plot} data while we're there)
>>
>>1468207
okay, let's ask this way, do you think raven would roast us for not having a safe house NOW?
If not, why don't we spend the time we have now for the inevitable firestorm that will come sooner or later?
>>
>>1468207
>>1468214
Also if the corps rain on us before next time, which unless something big happens I'll be down to expand to Eco point, we can attempt to stall by going to the UN.

which of the ladies do you think is kinkier?
>>
>>1468214
>do you think raven would roast us for not having a safe house NOW?
No, I don't. But I don't think this is something we should base our choice on.
Regardless, if Anons feel that having this option up our sleeve is not worth the point, we'll just have to roll with it.

>>
>Darknet Analysis (2)
>Firewall (2)
>Forge (2)

I'll admit, I'm not the greatest when it comes to this kind of decision making. My rationale behind these choices is that we'll get more mission opportunities as well as beef up Athena's defenses, finally get a properly staffed forge so that we can kit out our team better and hopefully stop coming back from every mission with someone getting half-killed, and of course the siren call of plot coming from that Ecopoint data.

I think creating a bolt hole is important, but can at least wait until our next upgrade opportunity.
>>
>>1468528
I'm inclined to agree with him because mercy has the personality that would be willing to experiment, whereas mei would just be straight submissive
>>
>>1468548
Gear hasn't been the problem, it has been bad dice. You know what makes bad dice not a problem? Athena's tactics upgrade that gives us a reroll.
>>
>>1468548
Seeker has a criminal past. I feel it's unlikely he doesn't have a few safe houses. He was competent after all.
>>
>>1468615
>was

Speaking of Athena's security, does she have offsite backups? Firewall is nice to have, but she could still be vulnerable to physical damage.

I'm going to call the vote here before we tie it up even further.

Firewall: 10
Dorm: 10
Darknet: 9
Tactics: 8
Blast Doors: 7
Eco Data: 6

Forge Lv2 also has 6 votes, but since it's 2 points, it loses out to recovering the data from the Ecopoint computers. We'll put it on the list for next time.
>>
So Athena's getting a pretty solid boost with Darknet Lv2, Firewall Lv2, and Tactics Lv1. You and the other agents will also finally get your own rooms in the Dormitory, even if they're a bit small. Your base's security against infiltration is already pretty solid, and now Blast Doors will give you some added fortification against more direct attacks. And an small expedition will be funded to un-freeze Ecopoint Antarctica's computers and retrieve the stored climate data requested by Mei.

That's all for this thread, anons.

>>
Finnaly caught up using the archive.
I vote we spend money on the forge , our guys need stronger equipment to deal with the unexpected, think of rein's poor back.
>>
>>1476429
Not to mention that it would allow us to get some mooks with decent gear rather than whatever we can easily make or they bring.

Also, we should really look into making a huge housing area to contain our mooks when we get started. Along with some easy way to deploy them en masse...paratrooper deployment, perhaps? If we can get Symmetra on side then we could probably use portals...
>>
>>1476886
>wanting mooks

>>1476429
Gear hasn't been our issue so far
>>
>>1476908
>Not wanting mooks

I mean, we obviously won't treat them as expendable muscle but we do need people that are just soldiers to bulk-out our forces, defend our bases and provide support in combat to our actual heroes.
>>
>>1476886
I agree with getting mooks
mooks would be good for helping defend the base and giving us backup
>>
>>1477555
Yeah.

If when we were facing those God-mind controlled omnics we had had some general troops to draw fire and provide us with a distraction we'd probably have been better off.

Plus it helps with our public image, if people think that they might have a chance to join besides being a scientific miracle like Tracer or Winston or a mystical fighter like Genji and his bro Hanzo.

We should also see about setting up "safe-houses" in every country we can. Just a small house or converted mine would be enough to provide us with a place to hide when we can't return to Watch-point Gibraltar. While also providing the possibility for reinforcements to arrive quicker.
>>
>>1476908
It has been, always then when our abilities didn't suffice or those of an operative.
>>
>>1471851
that kinda makes me want Seekrecy even more...

also mooks only if we can equip them properly. that means AFTER the forge... poor torb an brigitte
>>
>>1482107
>poor torb an brigitte

Let's face it, the first upgrade they make is probably an automated production / maintenance system.
>>
>>1477635
careful about that, the public prefers the hero type, not the commander of troops. If we appear like we have our own military people might distrust us and corps and countries might be faster on the move against us...
tl;dr defense mook yeah, offensive mook no no
>>
>>1490358
True but if we make it so they are the freedom fighter sort of mook, not the evil sort of mook.

What we really are saying we want is a covert international force of over-watch supporters armed with light weapons and armour to reinforce our deployments and provide containment until we arrive.
