You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

It was a bit of an understatement to say that you were feeling a just a tad uncomfortable when Solaire ordered yet another round of drinks for the tavern, much to their cheers. He was certainly quite the charismatic man, but the unintended side effect was that his charisma also drew a lot of attention to his companions, which currently included you and your little party.

Well, there were a few benefits, though. Mainly the free drinks. You couldn't complain about those.

You watch as Solaire chums it up with the other gathered adventurers that happened to be passing by Aldenshire, a rather unhappy looking Valentia sulking by his side.

Off to the side, you noticed the Guild clerk sitting at her own private table, scribbling away a various papers. Even when the Guild office was closed, she was still at it.

Meanwhile, your party seemed to have gone their own little ways. Morgan went out with Romulus for some "fresh air", while Naru was busy getting herself hopelessly drunk while keeping an eye on Nino. Probably not a good idea, in hindsight.

You manage to quietly sneak out of the tavern. Well, sneak as best out of there as a knight in full plate armor was capable of, but everybody was distracted by Solaire's merrymaking, so that worked out in your favor.

You get outside, and it was already rather dark, the town only lit by torches and lanterns and ominous light of Luna. Naturally, most of the townsfolk had retreated to their homes, where the walls and light would protect them. Annoyingly enough, you could see a few Elves milling about, basking in Luna's cold and heartless light.

You try your best to ignore the Elves as you look around, Morgan nowhere in sight. You cold breeze blows past as you scan your surroundings, trying to figure out where she went.

Acting on a hunch, you start walking over to the town gate. As always, there were a pair of guards standing watch, and they immediately snap to attention when they catch sight of you arriving.

"U-um, what do you need, sir?" One of the guards stammers.

You wonder why he's scared. Maybe the darkness was making your armor look imposing?

Nevertheless, you point to the gate.

"Y-you want to go out, sir?" The guard asks. Perplexed.

You nod, point to the tavern and then to the gate again, wondering if they saw anybody leaving from there.

"Right, there was a lass who went out a little while ago." The other guard nods. "But like we told her, going out is dangerous-"

You pull out your halberd, its steel head glinting in the moonlight.

"Right, sir. Of course, sir." The guard hastily nods as he unbars the gate and opens it just wide enough to allow you through.

You nod respectfully to them as you head out and into the trees. Now how to find Morgan?

Unfortunately, this whole tracking thing was FAR more difficult than you had initially thought it would be. As you wandered aimlessly through the forest, weaving around rocks and trees that all looked the same, with nary a landmark or navigation.

Actually, you might be lost.

No, you totally aren't lost.

You just, had very little idea of where you were, much less Morgan.

"Gee, a real hunter of the wilds, aren't you?" You hear Morgan giggling from above.

You crane your head upwards to see Morgan casually lounging up on a high tree branch, a smug little smirk on her face. Next to her was Romulus, who also seemed to be snickering at your predicament.

"Looks like you're lost." She chuckles. "Need a hand?"

You shake your head vigorously. You definitely weren't lost.

"What's with male adventurers and admitting that they're lost?" Morgan rolls her eyes. "Anyways, what are you doing out here?"

You point to her.

"Looking for me?" Morgan blinks in surprise. "Ah, well, that's a bit... unexpected."

You tilt your head curiously and point to her again and motion to the surrounding forest. What was she doing out here?"

"Ah, well..." Morgan pauses, as if to think of something to say. "I was just taking Romulus out for a walk, you know? Can't keep pups like him indoors all the time, or they start losing those instincts."

You nod. It wasn't as if she was going to lead you into a trap, or anything.

"Great! Let's go!" Morgan smiles as she takes the lead, weaving through the trees and brush, stopping periodically to make sure you were still keeping up with her. You start to notice that the elevation was starting to rise, as she was leading you up the side of a hill our mountain. All the while, Morgan is visible up ahead, like a wisp.

Finally, you reach what appears to be the top of the hill, leading to a sheer drop. However, ahead of you, you could see a wide view of a magnificent expanse. Even the darkness, you could see a sea of trees, dotted with lakes, rivers, and what looked to be ruins. All illuminated by the moonlight.

"See those mountains?" Morgan points to the horizon, where you can just barely make out the outline of a massive mountain range, their white snowcapped peaks glowing a soft whitish blue. Even from this distance, they looked gargantuan.

You turn to Morgan.

"They call that mountain range the Rim of the World." She says with an almost nostalgic look on her face. "At the farthest edge of the Frontier. Nobody knows what's on the other side. Mages can't even scry past it. That's where I want to go."

You look at Morgan and then to the distant Rim. She of course had reasons for this, you suspect, but she didn't seem to be in a mood to talk about it.

"So how about it?" Morgan turns back to you, a hopeful smile on her face. "We don't have to head there right away, but, keep it in mind, okay?"

You nod. It's not like such a thing would contravene your vows. Besides, you figured those mountains would be hosting a wealth of beasts to hunt. Giant eagles, dire goats, maybe even a full grown dragon!

"Hey, are you okay? You look like you're spacing out there." Morgan frowns as she waves her hand in front of your helmet.

Snapped back to reality. You nod rapidly. Her request seemed simple enough.

"Really? Thank you!" Morgan smiles and hugs you.

You just stand there stoically, mostly because you weren't sure how to respond.

"Ohmygosh I'm sorry! I just got a little caught in the moment!" Morgan backs away as quickly as she had come in. "Sorry, it's just not often I can really talk to someone like this."

You nod silently.

Romulus lets out a long whine, apparently starting to get bored.

"Huh, I guess we really should be getting back." Morgan sighs. "It won't do to stay out here all night."

You shrug and sit down on a nearby rock, intending to enjoy the view for just a bit longer. You almost wish you could've seen this under Sol's light, rather than the insidious Luna.

"It's a real sight, isn't it?" Morgan grins, taking a seat next to you. Romulus whines again but is placated by a good ear scratching courtesy of Morgan.

You're not quite sure how long the two of you had been sitting there, but the three of you are interrupted from your reverie by the loud snapping of branches and brush, like someone was stomping through the forest behind you. You and Morgan spin around, weapons ready when you realize that it was only Solaire, who had somehow tracked you down.

"Oho! Very alert, as expected of a Templar!" Solaire chortles as he walks up.

"How did you find us?" Morgan asks, a bit perplexed.

"Well, when you're around as long as I have, you pick up a few skills!" Solaire says happily.

You tilt your head curiously at him, wondering what he was here for.

"Ah, yes!" Solaire nods in response. "You see, I've been talking with some of the adventurers in the tavern, and it seems that they've discovered a Ruin not far from here!"

Solaire then points to the expansive view.

"You haven't heard this from me, but I hear the Mage Guild is planning an expedition there to unearth artifacts. Perhaps if you're quick enough, you may be able to salvage something before they do!"

"Really now?" Morgan blinks. "That's... quite generous of you."

"Well, those mages are always a stuffy lot, anyways. Besides, think of it as a favor from a friend!" Solaire laughs. "It will be a grueling journey, delving down into those depths, but if there's anybody that can do it, it'll be your merry group!"

"Thanks, we'll keep that in mind." Morgan nods. You nod along with her.

"Ah, and one more thing, while we're alone." Solaire leans in. "Ah, what is your personal opinion of my little Sunshine? She's very talented, but grossly inexperienced. I'm hoping she wasn't too overbearing on you?"

You simply shrug. It seemed that her heart was in the right place, but often outpaced her head. If she had some proper instruction and some more experience, she'd become a fine knight.

"Hm, yes, yes." Solaire nods, apparently understanding you perfectly.

"How do you do that? I barely got any of that..." Morgan frowns.

"Well, I was thinking the same thing, so perhaps I should be her mentor! Take her on a few adventures into the Frontier!" Solaire declares.

"You weren't before?" Morgan frowns.

"Ah, well, being a Grand Master requires great commitments." Solaire sighs. "I'm afraid I probably wasn't there enough when she was in training."

You nod. That sounded understandable.

"Ah, and if I remember correctly, you promised a sparring match with her, correct? She mentioned it to me!"

You nod.

"Ah, well, I'm hoping you don't go easy on her! She wouldn't like that!"

You shake your head. She wouldn't learn any other way.

"Excellent!" Solaire claps his armored hands together. "I wold not expect less from a Templar! By the way, how is old Tarkus doing these days? It's been ages since I've seen him!"

You just point to Solaire. Tarkus was doing quite well in his old age. Still out and about campaigning.

"Ha, I figured he'd not be tied down by his office!" Solaire nods. "I hear he's off fighting the Orcish Tribes in the north?"

You nod again.

"Wait, wait, you're telling me you're FRIENDS with the leader of the Black Templars?" Morgan gasps in surprise and turns to you. "And YOU know him personally?!"

"Well, just because we're both part of different knight orders doesn't mean we can't be civil about it!" Solaire chortles. "Though my predecessors probably wouldn't see it the same way, I believe both orders could learn a thing or two from each other!"

You nod and do a practice swing with your halberd, indicating that you were one of the lucky initiates to be under his direct tutelage.

"This is just too much..." Morgan groans.

"Well, if you ever see him, tell him he should come out West for once! Plenty for him to do out here!" Solaire continues.

You merely shrug this time. Tarkus did not take well being told what to do.

"Of course he doesn't!" Solaire pats you on the shoulder. "Well then, I believe it's time to get some rest! I shall see you two in the morning!"

And with that, the Paladin marches off in to the forest. He was certainly the odd one.

"Jeez, you got a lot of hidden secrets, don't you?" Morgan sighs as she starts heading off as well, pulling her hood up.

You cock your head at her. The same could be said of her.

"I guess you have a point there." Morgan concedes. "Come on, we should get going before something jumps us."

By the time you, Morgan, and Romulus return to the tavern, the little party has pretty much dispersed. Everyone had gone off to get some sleep. It looked like Nino and Naru had also turned in, too.

"Well, good night. See you in the morning." Morgan says as she places Romulus in your arms and heads off into her room.

You're left to your own devices, and you remember you still had that sparring match with Valentia in the morning.

You decide to get a few drills in before retiring for the night. You couldn't afford to let your skills fade, and you weren't about to let your guard down around Valentia. Though she lacked experience, she certainly did have a lot of confidence and heart, along with a healthy dose of stubbornness. Fine qualities in any knight.

You perform some basic practice swings with your halberd. The same ones Tarkus had taught you many years ago. Swing swing thrust. Swing swing thrust. Not only did these movements keep your body in shape and muscle memory sharp, but it also helped clear your mind and keep you focused. Romulus looks on curiously.

And the night goes on...

>Gain 1 reroll for the sparring match!

---

The next morning, you are back up and refreshed. Clad in your armor, you stand in the middle of Aldenshire's central square. Across from you was Valentia, similarly in her full armor and staring you down. Or at least trying.

And what was supposed to be a simple sparring match had turned into something of a major spectacle, with both townspeople and adventurers stopping by to watch. Of course, Solaire and your own little party were present as well. Morgan and Nino looked on intently, while a heavily hungover Naru was only paying the most cursory of attention.

"Challengers, are you ready?" Solaire asks, apparently becoming the unofficial judge.

Your raise your halberd in the air, and Valentia does the same with her sword.

"Excellent! Then begin!" Solaire barks as he steps back and out of the way.

Staying true to the tenets of the Templars, you immediately go on the offensive, charging at Valentia with your halberd at the ready.

As expected Valentia digs in her heels and raises her shield in a defensive position. Of course she was falling back on her training, waiting for you to commit to an attack, block it, and then counterattack. Typical Paladin fighting style.

Passive play should always be punished.

>Use brute force to pound straight through her shield.
>Use the hook on your halberd to strip her shield off.

One thing about shield users, they tended to rely a bit too much on their shields for protection. If you could take it away, it would put her at a serious disadvantage. You charge forward, flipping your halberd around to bring the hooked end to bear...

You manage to get the hook of your halberd in and over the top rim of Valentia's shield and pull, trying to yank it out of her hands. However, Valentia's grip on her shield is strong, and she manages to stand her ground, refusing to yield.

Knowing that you've lost the initiative, you put some slack on your weapon to unhook it, knowing that the Paladin would attempt a counterattack. Sure enough, she lunges forward, her sword point jutting forward in a classic thrusting attack.

"You can do it!" You hear Nino yell behind you.

One of your hands lets go of your halberd and reaches out, snatching Valentia's blade in a solid grip. Valentia's eyes widen in shock. While good against unarmored opponents, a sword's cutting edge may as well be useless against a knight. You yank at the sword, trying to pull her off balance, but she instead lets go of her sword and takes a step back to get some distance.

There's a collective gasp among the crowd as Valentia's sword clatters to the floor. You quickly kick it away further out of her reach. leaving the Paladin with only her shield. However, you're not about to let your guard down. Even though defensive in nature, shields could still be nasty blunt weapons in a pinch.

You charge forward, swinging your halberd relentlessly, the heavy head pounding against Valentia's shield. Each impact rang out, sending shockwaves down her arm. All Valentia could do was fall to a knee and keep her shield up as you continue to hammer away.

However, that didn't mean she was completely helpless. She waits until right after one of your attacks impacts, and then bursts forward in a surge of energy, shield still raised and slamming it into your breastplate full force. You feel the impact rattle you to the bone, but you manage to hold your ground, mainly due to the fact that you were simply far heavier than her.

You then follow up with a headbutt. You were still wearing a helmet, while Valentia wasn't. Big mistake. The impact is enough that it knocks her out cold and she crumples to the ground in a heap.

There's a brief moment of silence from the crowd.

And then the booing starts.

"That was dirty!" Someone sneers.

"Of course a Templar would beat up a little girl."

"A bunch of thugs, I tell you!"

You just stand there, doing your best to ignore all the verbal attacks.

Naru is already tending to Valentia as Solaire tries to calm the crowd down and get them to disperse. Thanks to him, things don't break out into a full on riot and everybody leaves to tend to their regular business.

"I say, some people can be so rude!" Solaire grunts as he returns.

"Meanies!" Nino sticks her tongue out. Romulus barks angrily in agreement.

"Is my little Sunshine fine?" Solaire asks.

"Just stunned." Naru shrugs. "Didn't even need to use a heal spell, though she's gonna have nasty lump on her forehead for a day or two.

"Ah, well, little Sunshine never did like wearing helmets." Solaire sighed. "Still, I think this would b a good learning experience for her. When she wakes up, at least."

"So, how does it feel to be the biggest asshole in Aldenshire?" Morgan asks with a bit of a smirk.

Your shoulders droop. You suppose that even in victory, you'll still lose.

>And that's it for tonight! I'll be taking a break next week, so no thread next weekend! We'll be back to our regular schedule the week after!
