Your name is Theo. You are a twenty one year old kid on some coastal town on the pacific american coast, and for some reason despite your age and the current year, you want to be a pirate.

You ignore the fact that the pirate fantasy was during the seventeenth through eighteenth centuries, and that pirating in the pacific coast today is near suicide, because you were raised to follow dreams, dammit. Pirates were men unbounded by laws on watery worlds outside every jurisdiction. Each man's vessel was his own kingdom, where he was truly a free man. In the past, this fact was a mere matter of fact; today, it seems the most valuable of luxuries.

Although like many children, you were raised hearing and reading about fictionalized and real life pirate stories, your reimagination of the fantasy came from...

> A: Drama Student: After some years of character study, you are used to the idea of acting out characters that have much richer histories than your own boring life. In a way, your fantastic imagination complements your ability as a working thespian because you can put yourself into a very convincing act. A recent role in a pirate themed play sparked your dream to become a modern day pirate, and you want to fully explore this role until you practically transform into the character-- permanently [Theo starts with strong speech skills]
> B: Explorer: Born too late to explore the world, born too early to explore the galaxy, but born just in time to explore the ocean! You have reason to believe that even with satellite technology and a globally connected world, much of the world's oceans are unexplored. Minor island cultures, new ocean species, unusual geographic features; all never before looked upon by civilized eyes! You adored the fantasy of the pirate being an explorer in exotic lands. You've taken great study to learn practical and contemporary navigation methods, including stargazing, cartography, and geography. [Theo will start with strong navigation skills]
>>
>>1481273
> C: Loner: Lets face it, none of us are truly free from Big Brother's gaze. You have tried to live a life where you don't feel constantly monitored like a caged animal, but to no avail. You see the sea as a final refuge for the average man who wants to completely disown the system that controls over himself. You admire the pirate because of his ability to truly control his own destiny, claiming lands for himself and going where he pleases, taking what he wants without anyone babysitting him. After all, what good is living if you cannot take charge of your life? [Theo starts with strong disguise]
>D: Criminal: The best part about the pirate is that he can get away with the most deplorable acts on the planet. You truly wish you could steep into the depravities of mankind, touching lust, wrath, greed, glutton, and worse for personal benefit. The pirate lifestyle for you isn't heroic because of the adventures, but because he got to get away with it and none the wiser. [Theo starts with more adrenaline during combat moves]

Drama Student Wins

You start with the Speech (I) Skill. You can roll 3d6 in situations to persuade, dissuade, or charm others. As a drama student, your current inventory consists of your pirate costume youve stolen from the prop department, which include a tricorne hat, black longcoat, raggedy cotton shirt and pants, black leather boots, and a red sash tied across your waist with a prop sword. After all, you gotta look the part to be the part.

The first two things you need is a crew and ship. So far, your only crew member is your childhood best friend Randy. Randy is fiercely loyal to you and has no other friends other than you. He expresses an obsession with 17th and 18th century explorers and strong interest in geography. He starts with the Navigation (I) Skill, which allows him to identify surroundings and pilot certain tiers of seacraft.

You both only know each other, so you dont have any additional crew. You plan whether you should go to the shipyard to find a ship to hijack, general store to purchase supplies, or look for more crewmembers

"Th-Th-Theo, are y-you s-s-sure you want to take in th-th-these guys? I mean, they're str-strangers, isn't it b-better if its just u-us?" Randy struggles with a bit of a stutter whenever he is nervous, which you know is often.

You explain to Randy that a crew of two is no crew, but a twosome, and you cannot operate a ship with just a twosome. Randy, in his usual manner, grunts and convinces himself that you have a point.

Randy had posted on numerous threads and forums asking for volunteers to join you on your quest months ago. Today is the day that you and Randy sift through the replies, posts, PMs, DMs, and emails of candidates you can recruit. It didn't take long to get through them-- there were only 14 worldwide willing to join. Of the 14, four were on this stretch of coastline, and of the four, two were a drivable distance away. You took notes on the two closeby profiles:

> Xixuan (Shaun) Dao - Another university student, studying biology in preparation for med school. He has incredible pressure from his parents to become a doctor from such an early age that he has never given much thought to what he actually wants in life -- until now. His epiphany came after reading your post and aching for the freedom of pirates of old. He is influenced by tales his grandparents had told of mythical adventurers and his desire even then to become one. His experience in shadowing doctors and independent study gives him the Medicine Skill. He also has very, very poor English. Neither you nor Randy knows any Chinese to bridge the gap. He brings all of his textbooks on human biology in a brown satchel, and a really cheap laptop.
> James “Jimmy” McBurgundy – McBurgundy is a college dropout trying to pursue an independent career in music. After much failure, being cut off from his family for giving up university, and being broke and in debt, his last fantasy would be to escape this world on a ‘journey to find himself’. He has been looking to travel but doesn’t want to spend any money, so is willing to be a crewmember if it means he can explore the world. He casually mentions that he had been a member of ROTC but dropped out after he found a distaste for the rigid structure of army training. As a result, he brings the Strength (I) Skill. He brings nothing but his guitar, guitar case, and a suitcase with clothes. He also is gay, which makes Randy very uncomfortable.

"Y-you can't be serious! I mean, one of them doesn't even speak English. And the other one is- well you know- not that there's anything wrong with it..." you let Randy's ramblings shut himself up. Randy’s a good guy in his heart, but he is real fidgety around people he’s not comfortable with. Fortunately, you are confident that once at sea, the sense of exploration will overshadow any insecurities he brings out when around others.

Two hours after sending the messages through all feasible methods to Shaun and Jimmy, you convince Randy to give you his debit card so you can purchase supplies at the general store for your pirating adventures. Randy takes out his notepad and writes a list of his and your combined inventory while you drive over to the general store.

Can we get some replica firearms? Fake ones basically? Because as long as they're close enough most people have next to no firearms experience and can't tell the difference when they're being point in their faces by a screaming pirate.

A cheap ass plastic rifle thing would likely be 100, something that was a real rifle replica, so a movie prop or airsoft gun, would be around 2-3 hundred.

I'd trade out 2 first aid kits, 2 knives, 1 dictionary, a week of food, a battery pack, and a length of rope for a good replica, have whoever isn't securing the hostages or such keep them compliant. Also our first raid will likely give us rope, food, and a first aid kit at least I'm guessing, so that's less of a concern for me as long as we find a "mark" before we all die at sea of (list of many causes). This OK?

Pretty valuable for when we strand our asses out in the open ocean with no fuel. Down the road could we modify our boat to hide all identifying marks from our boarding actions? Aka have a hidey hole for loot pirate stuff and change the name between jobs to something the boat is actually registered to? And other stuff I have no knowledge on? I ask because in the case of real maritime trouble it would be nice to get rescue that doesn't involve us going to jail, or being able to enter legitimate (aka moderate security) ports. I imagine anything we did would be far from foolproof but being able to meander into a moderate sized port in south or central Americas, or a rural real american port, would be nice. Nevermind the local coastguard of wherever not murdering us.

You and Randy pull up to the checkout counter with two carts filled with stuff. Randy shakes his legs as he leans on the counter while the cashier scans each item, occasionally looking up with dead eyes.

"Find everything ok?" the cashier drones robotically.
"W-w-why do you wanna know? You l-l-like to snoop around or something?"
You are about to charm your way out of the awkward situation when you realize the cashier's boredom did it for you. After carrying the purchased goods to your car, you litter the trunk and back seat with white polyethylene bags. You take a minute to sit in the drivers seat and think while Randy looks at his phone.

"Th-they both replied back, we can p-p-pick them both up when you're ruh-ready"

Pick them up? You are surprised they had replied to meet in person, not to mention having replied so soon. Randy shows you the message, and you mark your destinations. It’ll take round an hour to pick both your crewmembers up.

During the drive to Shaun’s college, Randy tells you about the shipyard. You smile, not only knowing that the plan’s coming together, but also that Randy’s excitement over his findings had eradicated his stutter temporarily. “Okay Theo, so I’ve found three boats we can jack in the harbor. Theres a merchant coaster, fishing trawler, and passenger ferry. Yeah, I know you don’t care what kinda boat it is dumbass, but you gotta listen up, each is different in its own way!

The merchant coaster is the biggest of them all, with a large cargo deck in the front and the bridge sitting atop a floor with some crew quarters, a mess, and a rec room. Its been owned by some idiot who thought he could profit from coastal trading on this side of the US. Technically, the ship’s supposed to be scrap in two days, but we can sneak in and lift it outta there and I bet none would be the wiser. Merchant ships of this size aren’t unusual along the coast, but can be identified with the IMO number on the side, so as long as we obscure that number when we approach busier docks, we’ll be off the hook. [Cargo]
>>
The passenger ferry is medium sized, but the fastest. I found it in the ferry service's old dockyard, sitting there with an open gate.I'm pretty sure its one of their older models, they don't run it or anything. There’s no mess or quarters though, just a huge indoors room on the first floor and an open upper deck near the tiny cockpit of a bridge. I think it’d be great as a hit and run boat on isolated areas on the coast. The ferry’d look unusual outside of this area though, but maybe we would need to work on using the coastline to hide our routes? [Fast]

The fishing trawler is the smallest. Its bridge faces starboard with its deck behind, and has some weird net-crane thing for hauling fish. There’s some rooms for fishing equipment underneath the bridge, but it can serve nicely for a crews quarters, or anything else really. The boat is great because so many trawlers are out on this coastline so theres no need to worry about others bothering us“ [Stealthy]

Anyways, I know these aren't deep sea boats, but give me enough time to learn how these coasters work and I'll operate the deep ones in no time!”

You nod, considering what your actions should be after you pick up your other crewmembers

I think we should get our crew members. Even if he realizes the gun is fake, four people with knives should scare him.

I think we should ask him to show us how to sail the boat, and when we're on the water, jack the boat. Maybe even try and recruit him. or her.
>>
>Stealthy

Speed won't do us any good when the coast guard drops enough hate on our lucrative adventures. They'll still have us beat in speed and numbers, and flying away from the scene of a crime in a recognizable vessel will draw attention to ourselves.

You think the fishing trawler is the most ideal: its best to be inconspicuous on your travels due to the nature of your business. You inform Randy, who takes out a printed sheet that has directions towards the fishing trawler docks.

You finally arrive at your first stop, University of Seaview Port, Shaun’s college. Shaun had told you his apartment number via messaging, although he mainly communicated through emojis which you and Randy had to interpret. Once parked at his complex’s lot, you and Randy climb up to the top floor and knock at the paint chipped blue door with the number ‘337’. The door opens almost immediately.

“Hey uh-uh-are you Shaun?” Randy asks with faux confidence. The 5’7’’ chinese student wore sandals, a white pair of slacks, and a full sleeved collared shirt with all the buttons done, up to his Adam’s apple. He looks at you and Randy through thick glasses and is holding a brown satchel stuffed with books on one shoulder and a laptop big over the other.

Xixuan nods, confirming that you have reached the right person.

“Hi, I’m Randy, First Mate and navigator, this is Theo – you know, c-p-theo?”
Shaun points at Randy and asks “Keputinnah Dio?”

“No, no, I’m Randy, this is Theo.”

Shaun points at you and asks again. You nod. Shaun smiles. As he moves through the door out, the momentum of the bags wobbles him and he walks with a weird swaying motion. You and Randy point out your car as you climb down, occasionally looking up as the young medical student clutches his satchel with both hands and follows you down.

“uh-boat?” Shaun asks once you all get in the car. You try to explain to Shaun that you haven’t jacked the boat yet, but he keeps asking and appears to not get his answer. You let Randy entertain him while you drive to pick up your second crewmember.

“We are going to get a boat. I will pilot it, see? N-nuh-navigator Randy, that’s me!”
“what boat?”
“Yes, we have a boat! Does that answer you question?”
“Yesh. But, uh, boat?”

You chuckle at the ruckus going on in the backseat and roll up to your second crewmember’s location. Jimmy is wearing a red flannel shirt over a white tee and blue jeans, sitting in a chair at a café patio. His black guitar case is sitting on the ground next to a red duffel bag which you assume has his clothes. His face is clean-shaven and you can’t tell if there are highlights in his hair or if that’s just summer glow. Randy insists staying in the car while you go approach him.

“Theo, right? Captain Theo I should say?” You nod as Jimmy laughs a little and gets up, throwing the guitar over his shoulder and carrying the duffel bag. "Good aura dude! You know I never though you’d come back! I know you posted in like, May, but I kept checking, you know. By the way, let me introduce myself since we're in person. I’m Jimmy McBurgundy, struggling guitarist, soulful human.”

Your first impression is that Jimmy seems very nice, if not maybe naïve. You direct him inside the car next to Shaun. When you climb in the driver’s seat, you find Randy as silent as Shaun, so you manage the crew introductions, your current inventory, and your plan to jack a Fishing Trawler. To your surprise, none of the crew has raised any objections at the absurdity of your plans, but you aren’t surprised; their eagerness to join this trip had been reflected in their quick response.

You approach the shipyard before sunset. As Randy had noted, there were loads of fishing trawlers out on sea and returning to dock. You look at the boat Randy had specifically identified as the most ideal – she had a long deck in the back with the crane hoisted high, and a bridge sharing space with presumable the equipment rooms that Randy had told you earlier. The boat was located far enough down the dock that you and your crew could approach it without any eyes from further down noticing you. Once inside the boat, you imagine piloting it out won’t cause any alarm at all.

Trudging out of the car with bags of your purchases, you turn to your crew to give a forceful, captain-y speech. You demand that they follow you obediently and without question, that their lives be given unto you and as a gift you would allow them the luxury to travel with you on the seas in the grandest adventure of their lives. Randy enthusiastically shouts his agreement, while Shaun nods continually and Jimmy says a brief, west coast ‘yah’ followed by a childish smile. The crew isn’t perfect, but if they’re loyal, they’ll do.

Cautiously, you board the damp trawler. The rest of the crew lay low out of sight of other shipmen on the dock while you investigate to make sure the boat is empty. However, when you open the door to the bridge, you are surprised when you see a hunched over fisherman untying some wires. Its clear the man isn’t aware of your presence yet. What are you going to do?

So we're using averages between the rolls, or in the roll itself and we're using best of?

My current system is averaging the first three sums. I would also like to add to not be afraid of failure in a skill, you will still get xp for the attempt, and reading skill books like the one purchased can boost speech.

“Excuse me sir, I think you have the wrong boat.”
The man turns around. Sitting up, he looks almost a foot taller than you. You see an instance of anger before confusion strikes his face. You register that as meaning he saw your costume.
“Whoa, who are you buddy? How did you get here? From your outfit, this looks like the last place you need to be. Here, let me guide you out.”
You decide its better for him to think you are a lost man and allow yourself to be guided out of the boat. Luckily, he hadn’t seen the fake gun you had dropped behind the open door.

Your three crewmembers are still on dock, confused by yourself being guided. The man grows even more confused but the expressions on your crewmembers face reveal nothing. He walks up to them and asks them questions about who you are, presumably due to the sanity their clothes reflect. You notice he is facing away from you, and are fortunate enough to have a stuttering Randy bumble his way through the conversation. Unfortunately, his added speaking time is outmatched by his lacking speech skill, so you don’t have much time to improvise out of this.

> Push the man in the water and run in the boat
> Knife the man in the back and run in the boat
> Use fake gun from boat to attempt intimidation [Easy]
> Grab onto man from behind and call out to Jimmy to knock him out [Easy]

Grab him and have Jimmy knock the dude out.

Just shoving him and taking a boat will have him getting the police on us before we even got a chance to go a-pirating. Also, Jimmy needs to be tested, so consider it a trust building exercise.

You decide its time for your crew to prove their worth. You jump on the fisherman while he faces away. He wears you like a backpack. Your weight forces his tall figure to hunch forward, so that his face is at level with Jimmy.
"Wh-what the fuck? Is this boy retarded or something? Feels like retard strength!"
You shout at Jimmy to take care of the man, and he understands at once what you mean. He takes a wide stance then drills a left hook into the man's right cheek. You topple down with the unconscious body.

"Juh-juh-jeeeeeesus kuh-rist! How did you do th-th-that?" Randy shuffles away a little further from Jimmy while still addressing him. Jimmy shrugs. "I was in a lot of fights with a lot meaner guys than this. I know how to put a man down." His tone was matter of fact, but you sense that Randy interpreted it in a completely different manner.

Shaun moves in to feel his pulse. He says something that you assume means he is still breathing. Its unclear how long he will be asleep, so you and a few other crewmember drag and dump him into another trawler, with nets as cover. Of course, you also ruffle through his pockets before you return to your newly confiscated ship

You dump out whatever old fish piles, clunky equipment, and extra nets there are over into the ocean. Randy manages to awkwardly fidget with the controls until he starts the boat and coasts it off shore. He reports the tank is completely full.

After a safe distance away and a beautiful view of the setting sun over water, you address your crew once more. You tell them of your passions in pirating, that you wish to emulate the cult of personality that had come to Sir Francis Drake, Captain Morgan, and Billy Kidd. Your crew seem riled with enthusiasm (even Shaun, who laughs end in hilarious sounding ‘r’s) and discuss their fantasies as well; Randy, who wants to circumnavigate the world, Jimmy, who wants to embark on a journey of self discovery, and Shaun, who as far as you can tell, wants to destroy large Japanese whaling ships.

The storage closet and bridge are both transformed into crew quarters. Nets from the deck are assembled to support you and your crew as makeshift hammocks, but when one breaks, Jimmy simply uses it as a cover. The cool sea breeze makes for a nice environment to sleep, so the crew doesn’t mind the inadequate cover.

You and Randy are left mulling over the map he has in his explorer’s book.
“Its good you chose this ship Theo, since we can approach other vessels we find and they’d think we were just another helpless trawler with low fuel, or a broken rudder. We could just meander up north or down south to one of the other profiles we noted on the forums. The guy up north is in Alaska, I think he said he’s a photographer or something? The other guy’s in Mexico, from what I read he said he’s a real good cook. Here, you can take a look at the profiles if you want.

Now I know it’ll be a long trek either way in this rusty tub, so I’d say we try looking when we’re better off supplies wise, or with a faster boat maybe. We can start by either raiding some shores, or boats. Boats would be active in the day, so we could wait it off it until morning and then make our luck out there. Its hard to be caught in the middle of the sea, so theres low risk, but then again theres no guarantee we’ll find a ship. If we look to raid a coast, we’d best go while its still dark. A bunch of the north towns ain’t got many eyes on them since no illegals come in that far up, but raiding north still carries a lot of risk. I know at least three ports most likely abandoned or completely empty if we go right now. We’ll be able to raid boats, cargo, hell even buildings are rotting in the rockier areas. So what do you wanna do boss?”

> Wait until morning and try to raid a ship [Estimated Time 14 hours]
> Go to one of the sitting docks right now [Estimated time 2 hours]
> Look into the Alaskan profile
> Look into the Mexican profile
> Set course (Alaska, Mexico)
You may choose multiple options. Time can be passed by talking to crewmembers to improve relations, or working on skills.

>>1493020
Let's go scavenge some of those abandoned docks up north. The charter to Alaska will most likely prove difficult (if we decide to go) we need more supplies and more habitable quarters for the crew.
