You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Haul found a time for a short break in the midst of his ongoing investigation. As planned, you decided to invite him and his wife for lunch with you and Reagan in one of the solariums. There's a moderate snowfall outside instead of sun, but it's still pretty to look at and the enchanted heatstones keep the place warm.

"Thank you very much for inviting us, your highness," Mair says with a curtsey.

"There's no need to be so polite." You smile and take Reagan's hand. "After all, our status is equal."

"Ah, yes, that is true now that I think about it," Haul says. "Do you plan on returning to Olstren soon, Princess Reagan?"

"If all goes well, I will introduce my father to his grandchildren next summer," Reagan answers. "I'm quite looking forward to it. I greatly enjoy staying at my husband's side in Degfford, but it has been a long time since I've left home."

Lunch is an assortment of cured meats, cheese, bread and candied fruits along with a generous helping of wine. It's a shame you couldn't get a hot meal to fight off winter, but it would have gotten cold by the time it got here from the kitchens, so it would have been wasted anyway.

>[Dilettante/Autosuccess] Try to make Mair more comfortable with the conversation.
>[Sovereign/Autosuccess] Ask about Prince Haul's plans for the future.

This will go better if Mair is more comfortable. You relax in your seat, roll up your sleeves a little and keep a light smile on your face to seem more inviting.

"Have you gone to any parties? People do like to celebrate around the winter season. There's hardly any time to do it the rest of the year."

"Prince Haul brought me to a few outings," Mair says, "but after Prince Aled's death…"

"It's unfortunate, but I have little time to celebrate even during the off season," Haul says. "I hope to rectify that soon, however."

"You're always welcome to come by my chambers," Reagan says. "Eleri, Olwen and I would be glad to host you, and perhaps watching the children play will give you some encouragement."

Mair's cheeks redden at the implications of her own (hopefully impending) pregnancy. "I'll keep that in mind, thank you," she says. "Although I've often wondered… why did you decide to have multiple consorts and concubines, your highness?"

>"Because I love them."
>"Their skills and assets are useful."
>"Unlike my brother, I'm quite depraved."

"It's nothing too complicated," you say. "I did it because I love them."

"Is that so?" Mair seems genuinely surprised by the idea that you can care about others. What have people been saying about you? "That is quite a mundane reason. I didn't know you could be so romantic. You don't mind, Princess Reagan?"

"The prince rescued me from a very delicate political situation," Reagan says. "I can hardly complain when he extends his kindness towards other. Besides, a husband and wife share everything. This trip would have been difficult for me if Olwen and Eleri hadn't come along to support me."

"That - oh - I - what?" Mair stammers out something incoherent; she must have caught Reagan's implication about her own relationship with your companions.

"Hmmm?" Prince Haul frowns and looks at his wife. "Are you alright, Mair? You seem unwell."

"No, I'm fine, I'm completely fine!"

Right, now seems like a good time to change the subject.

Mair loosened up a little and seems more comfortable with you, so it's time to turn your focus on your brother.

"How has your work been, brother?"

"That would depend," Prince Haul says. "Are you talking about the investigation, or the tasks father has assigned to me."

"Father's tasks," you say. "I imagine it's a more pleasant subject."

"It is," Prince Haul says, "although I wouldn't consider it an entertaining topic to discuss over lunch."

"Look at it this way," you say, "this is the only time you can discuss such subjects lightly."

"That is a very good point."

The kingdom's food stocks are ready for the winter, so you don't have to worry about finding villages of starved corpses when the snow thaws. It's not something that happens often - especially not anymore - but it has happened in the past. Other necessary supplies - heat stones, firewood, medicine - are in sufficient supply on average, but some of the more isolated forts and villages are a little low. The Crown will have to keep an eye on them just in case.

"It sounds like you've been busy," you say.

"Yes, the Crown Prince is quite tired when he returns from work," Mair says. "I have been a little concerned about it lately."

"There's no need to worry," Prince Haul says. "This is merely part of my duties."

>"Have you tried asking Mair for help?"
>"I'm glad you're taking it seriously."

"Have you tried asking Mair for help?" You ask.

"I've taken a few social meetings on the Crown Prince's behalf," Mair says. "I'm afraid it's all I can do to support it."

"That's already quite significant," Prince Haul says. "Those meetings tend to run long, and would distract me from more important work. Although I regret delegating them to you, I'm grateful for your efforts."

"Your highness…" Mair gazes longingly at Haul with starry eyes and joins her hands together.

"Indeed, it's a very impressive effort," Reagan says. "Perhaps there are other tasks you can take up to alleviate the Crown Prince's burden."

"I very much doubt that, your highness," Mair says. "Such things are beyond my abilities."

"Perhaps Reagan and I could teach you a few things," you say. "My mother is quite involved in affairs of state; I'm certain she would appreciate it if you followed in her footsteps."

"We'll be here for several months more," Reagan says. "We might as well make good use of it."

"That sounds delightful," Mair says. "I mean, I know it's difficult, but…"

"You're glad to have an opportunity to better support the Crown Prince?" Reagan chuckles softly.

"Something like that, yes."

"Don't overwork yourself," Prince Haul says. "This is the burden I chose for myself. There's no need for it to weigh on your shoulders."

"That's not true!" Mair says. "Didn't the princess say that the prince supported her in her time of need? It's only natural that I support you!"

You nod sagely in agreement. "You should listen to your wife, brother," you say. "I promise you, it'll make your life easier."

Prince Haul gives you a wry smile. "Very well," he says. "Mair, if you wish to become more involved in the palace's affairs, I won't stop you. You will be queen, after all."

There, you're making tangible progress with your brother.

>"You'll have to work hard as well, brother."
>"You can also rely on me if you need to."
>"Don't use this as an excuse to avoid the boring work, brother."

"Don't use this as an excuse to avoid the boring work, brother," you say. "Some matters must be handled by the king, even if having a loved one by one's side makes things more fun."

"Of course not, Meirion," Prince Haul said. "You know how concerned I am with my responsibilities."

Yes, yes you do. Those responsibilities don't always align with the kingdom's political and economic needs, but Prince Haul does take them seriously.

And to be fair, Prince Haul has been spending his efforts more efficiently recently, due in no small part to your personal effort.

After lunch, Haul returns to his work, bringing Mair along. You yawn and stretch out your arms.

"That was quite tiring," you say, "yet I can't feel like that conversation just went in circles."

"You got what you wanted in the end," Reagan says. "Shall we go? I bought the children some winter clothes a few days ago, and I believe they would like the snow.

"Sounds fun."

"Oh, they are so adorable!" Your mother squees and crouches over Rhein and Aislin as they play in the snow. "They're like big snowballs!"

Your children are wrapped in fluffy bundles of white wool, aside from their boots and holes for their faces. The two of them are making cooing noises as crawling around, heedless to the cold.

"Are you sure they're not too hot?" You ask.

"They look fine," Olwen says. "We'll bring them inside if it looks like they're getting too tired."

"I'd rather be too hot than too cold." Eleri rubs her hands together to warm them up. "I should have bought another set of winter clothes. These are too worn out."

"We can go shopping tomorrow," Reagan says.

The gentle snow makes for a peaceful, almost idyllic scenery. Snow tends to ruin armies, but you can appreciate its pleasant moments.

You pull Reagan and Olwen into a hug and use them to trap Eleri, who gladly presses against your chest.

"Not so cold anymore, is it?"

"No, just perfect." Eleri closes her eyes and leans her head on your shoulder. "Stay exactly like this until we go back in and everything will be fine."

"That's a bit much," you say.

"And yet it's your idea," Olwen says, "so it must be a good one."

Well, she's not wrong.

"This feels very comfortable, almost nostalgic," Reagan says. "Maybe it's been a little too long since the four of us have been… intimate."

"I could ask mother to look after Rhein and Aislin for a day," you say. "We could do something special."

"I'm listening very attentively," Olwen says.

"We could turn the bath into a sauna," you say. "We'd just need some heatstones to make steam."

"Sweaty and hot," Eleri mumbles against your chest. "I like it."

"Seconded," Reagan says. "It'd be nice to just relax for a day."

There, you've got a plan. You just need to wait for a day when none of you are too busy and the four of you can enjoy yourselves together for the first time in a long time.

"Meirion! Stop planning how you're going to give me more grandchildren and come play with the ones I have now!"

"You have two other granddaughters in Degfford, mother," you point out.

"I know," the queen says, "and I will play with them so soon as possible, but right now, I want to see Rhein try to flip himself over."

You look over Eleri's shoulder. Rhein has fallen onto his back and is trying to roll his ball of wool over so he can get back on his stomach.

Okay, yes, that is very adorable.

And Alchemy.

That's it for today. Beleaguered Prince Quest will resume on Friday June 2nd at 8PM EDT, same as always.

Also, I suffered catastrophic impulse control failure last week and started up Modern Shinobi Quest on Anonkun last week. You can catch up here: https://fiction.live/stories/Modern-Shinobi-Quest/ZYfqqmsKsnDgMQCh6/home

The next run of Modern Shinobi Quest will be tomorrow, so you can check if you want.

Until next time, goodnight and thanks for playing.

Thread 4 doesn't have a unique identifier. 4chan changed OP's name for every post (+ on /tg/ so no IDs) - probably because it was April 1st. The script that produces the pure text can't find the OP posts.

You linked Thread 5, the 4th is http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/46400325/ .
