You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You have to say, the end of this mission wasn't quite like the others. While debriefings were standard procedure, there usually wasn't any pressing need to carry them out right away, as the Admiral preferred you all to be repaired and rested before having to go through that process.

However, today was different. You and many of the senior shipgirls were quickly (and quietly) instructed to report to the briefing room straight away, with the exception being anybody who was particularly heavily damaged.

That in itself was odd enough, but what really put you on edge was the specific order not to talk to ANYBODY. Just head straight to the meeting point.

So you all warily head back to the briefing room, where you immediately see the Admiral and the Captain, as expected. However, there were more people present as well. There was Mulberry, several other navy officers from various countries, and a man in a suit that seemed to stand out from all of the military men.

"This is so weird..." Anna mumbles, her antenna stuck straight up in caution.

"Is this a guy version of a slumber party?" Paz wonders wistfully.

Well crap, you couldn't really pick out any faces you knew at all. The best you could manage was from their uniforms themselves, which at least told you what navies they were from. There were a few from the JMSDF and USN, as expected. There were a couple of guys from the Royal Navy and Deutsche Marine as well, and a few guys from some nearby minor Asian nations like Singapore and the Philippines. The suit you were guessing was some sort of spook, like that one slimy Brit you met all the way back in the Falklands.

"Ladies, if you would be seated, I'd like to get this debrief started right away." The Captain coughs loudly to get everybody's attention. All of the gathered shipgirls comply without a word, including you. "Now, Would a representative from each area of operations give me a summary of what happened?"

"Um, well, we ran into a big Abyssal salvage op and stopped them cold." You say. "They didn't take anything, as far as I could tell."

"We also successfully repelled a scouting party that was circling around Yamato's wreck." Yahagi says proudly, eying Yamato as she does so as if it would gain her more favor.

"I'm afraid we arrived too late." Nagato sighed. "Bikini Atoll was stripped clean of all derelict ships."

"I see." The Captain nods, a dark expression on his face. "This is quite alarming."

There's mumbling among the officers before the Admiral quiets them.

"Remain calm." He says softly. "I assure you that this matter will be resolved in time."

"Are they fighting with each other?" Paz quietly wonders.

Man, you were really TIRED of all this cloak and dagger bullshit! If the brass were concerned about something then you shipgirls had a right to know! You were all putting your asses on the line, after all!

"How about you cut the bullshit and fill us all in already!" You shout, standing up from your seat.

The whole room goes deathly silent, with the assorted shipgirls looking on at you with a mixture of bemusement and horror, though some nod in agreement with your sentiments. Up front, you see Mulberry politely put a hand up to her mouth, as if to hide a very impolite smile while the Captain and the other officers shoot you very ugly looks.

However, the atmosphere is broken by the Admiral's laughter. It was wheezy and strained from age, but it still had a warmth to it that defused everybody's anxiety.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised it would be you to speak up, Hoel." The Admiral nods and steps forward to take the Captain's place. "I suppose there's no point trying to keep this quiet now."

The Captain then activates the projector, showing not just the Pacific, but the entire world. Almost everywhere, in every ocean, there were red circles and red arrows, all converging northwards.

"This phenomena of disappearing wrecks began to occur at least a month ago, according to our estimates. As you can see, our attempts to track the Abyssal's movements show a massive migration north to the northern Dark Zone. At first, we thought it was a mass retreat, but your actions earlier today proved it was something more sinister."

The projector then shifts, switching to a picture of Science Team technicians pulling out what was left of the Abyssal Behemoth you had taken out at Samar.

"It appears the Abyssals have been quietly sending out scavenger crews, picking up shipwrecks from any body of water they have access to."

"Do ya know why they're doing it?" Iowa asks.

"Unfortunately, we don't." The Admiral shakes his head. "But only guesses."

"Old shipwrecks... our ancient bones..." Mulberry mutters. "There still lies a power in them. Faint, but it's there."

The other shipgirls begin muttering nervously. You notice Anna's antenna twitching wildly as well.

"In either case, this emergent behavior from the Abyssals has concerned me and my colleagues enough that we have agreed that we must move up our timetable to eliminate the Abyssal threat once and for all." The Admiral says grimly. "We must assault the Dark Zone."

Now the room gets REALLY wild, as shipgirls gasp and there's more, louder muttering, which is all ceased again from a loud and commanding cough from the Captain.

"Thank you." The Admiral smiles at his subordinate before turning back to all of you. "This means that we will have to organize a reconnaissance party to penetrate the Storm Wall with three objectives. One, determine Abyssal force strength. Two, find a safe path through the Storm Wall. And three, find out what the Abyssals are doing with the salvaged shipwrecks."

"But I thought it was impossible to breach the Storm Wall." Nagato points out. "Every drone we send in there never comes back."

"There are some among us who are particularly suited to going in." The Admiral locks eyes with you. "Specifically, Hoel, San Francisco, Pacifica, and Woel."

Fuck.

"Why them?" Enterprise blinks, more curious than outraged.

"Some of the circumstances are rather... private." The Admiral glances at you, and Paz.

"We know the score." You say.

"Then I'll say no more." The Admiral nods. "Just know that they are all uniquely suited for this mission."

Enterprise nods, still a bit uncertain, and sits back down.

"Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet will maintain regular patrol duties, so as not to put the Abyssals on edge." The Admiral continues. "Though we will maintain a small reserve force in case the recon group needs it."

There's another brief pause as the Admiral tries to gauge the mood of his girls, and droops just a bit.

"Everybody not in the recon team may leave now. Please get some rest and refitting. Your assignments will come shortly."

With that, the other shipgirls begin to reluctantly file out. Yamato, Iowa, and Portland give you concerned looks as they leave.

"Good luck, Hoel!" Anna hugs you before leaving.

"Um, is everything okay?" Pacifica asks nervously, seeing Anna leave the both of you.

"For now, yeah." You nod weakly.

"Goddamnit, I thought I was done with this shit." San Fran grumbles.

"Hey, wait a minute." You frown. "Where's Woel?"

"Shen is still fine tuning her upgrades, but she's already been briefed." The Admiral explains.

"So what are we still doing here?" San Fran grumbles, eyeing the officers and the spook.

"There is something of an impasse." The Admiral motions to the officers. "Unfortunately, your, Hoel, and Woel's participation is compulsory, thanks to the Agency's insistence."

Damn, that must have been that "favor" you were warned about for getting Woel a clean record. You eye the spook, who gives you a shit eating grin. Hate those guys.

"However, Dr. Vahlen and the Science Division have raised concerns about including Pacifica on this mission." The Admiral eyes the artificial shipgirl. "Not only is she inexperienced but she... ah.. represents a 'significant investment' to the Navy. My colleagues here are split on the matter, so I'm leaving it to your call."

"I wanna go! I wanna go!" Paz bounces up and down in her seat.

"Seems pretty skeevy, but I won't turn down the extra firepower." San Fran shrugs and looks at you. "What do ya say?"

"Yeah, we have no idea what we're gonna come across in there, so I think it'd be good to have some extra firepower." You nod.

"Yay!" Paz cheers and hugs you. The other officers seem to shift uncomfortably at this.

"But wait, how are we gonna handle navigation?" San Fran asks. "I've been able to sorta get in, but no form of navigation seems to work. Compass and GPS go haywire and there's no stars to use as reference. We always had to use physical tethers to get me back..."

"Yes, I believe Shen and Vahlen have found a solution." The Admiral smiles. "Thanks to Annapolis, Hoel, Pacifica, and now Woel having datalinks, we believe that Annapolis can boost her signal enough to be able to breach the Storm Wall's interference. She'll act as sort of a beacon or lighthouse to provide you a point of reference you can use to navigate."

"Though of course, this is completely untested." The Captain warns.

"It's nothing she hasn't been doing already." The Admiral tuts. "Though I assume you won't have a problem with this."

"As if we've got a choice." You shrug. "And I'm pretty sure Anna would be stoked to participate."

"Yeah, she's cool!" Paz nods in agreement.

"We still need to make preparations on our end, so you'll still have some time for R&R before heading out." The Admiral continues. "I suggest you make the most of it. Dismissed."

"Well shit." San Fran groans as you exit with her. "Guess I'll indulge myself a bit considering what we've gotta do. If ya need me just hit me up at the officers' club."

San Fran then breaks off, headed to try and cool her nerves.

"So what now?" Paz asks, still bouncing up and down with energy.

Well, you could always head to the repair dock to rest. Or maybe you could hit up Woel and Anna to get the datalink tested?

Then again, you heard that Sam's mood hasn't really improved ever since coming back from Samar. Maybe you should check on her?

You decide to head off to find Sam. She was practically family, after all, and it was your job to keep an eye on her.

"Hey, Paz." You grin as you kneel down to her. "How about you head to the repair dock and get yourself fixed up, okay?"

"But I feel fiiiiiiiine." Paz whines.

"Paz." You say sternly. "You never turn down an opportunity to get repaired. You wanna end up all creaky and rusty like Milwaukee?"

"Eeeeep! No!" Paz shakes her head rapidly. "I'll go, I'll go!"

"I'll catch up with ya later!" You grin as you ruffle her hair. "If anything happens, just hit me up on the network, all right?"

"Right!" Paz nods as she skips off.

That left you free to find your little wayward destroyer escort. A quick ping of your radar let you know that Sam was hanging out on... the Mikasa of all places?!

The Mikasa was a battleship. Well, a pre-dreadnought technically, but that was practically the same thing, all things considered. She had been sitting in Yokosuka has a museum ship for decades. Was quite the popular tourist attraction back in the day before the place got cordoned off by the military when the Abyssal war kicked off. Basically, everybody was wondering when, or if, Mikasa would ever come back as a shipgirl.

You quickly head over to the docked ship. Security had certainly gotten rather lax ever since the blockade around Japan had been broken. You didn't see any guards nearby, though you could see the blinking lights of patrol ships passing by in the bay.

And there was Sam, standing atop Mikasa's forward turret, a bat in her hand a basket of baseballs as she started batting them away into the harbor one by one, apparently completely lost in her own world.

"HEY! SAM!" You yell, hoping your voice would carry up to the ship.

"Wha-!?" Sam pauses and looks down. "Hoel? The fuck are you doing here?"

"Just came by to talk!" You reply. "So uh, wanna talk?"

There's a long, awkward pause, but Sam relents.

"All right, get yer ass up here, then."

You scramble your way up to Mikasa's deck and then to the top of the turret, where Sam is waiting, her wooden bat slung over her shoulder casually.

"So why'd you come all the way out here to just talk?" Sam raises an eyebrow.

"Well, you know, I just wanted to make sure ya were still doing okay. You know, considering..." You trail off, not really wanting to say her issue out loud.

"Ah, wondering if I went off the deep end, huh?" Sam sighs as she picks up a ball and bats it out into the harbor, the ball falling into the distant water with a muffled splash. "Well, I'm not really in any mood to talk about it."

"Oh?" You grin. "C'mon, ya made me come all the way out here to check on ya. Might as well tell me a good story!"

"Well..." Sam sighs and groans. "All right, but ONLY if you can beat my distance!"

Sam then tosses one of the extra baseballs to you. You immediately understand.

"All right, so our target is..." Sam pauses, and then points her bat at a distant Arleigh Burke destroyer idling in the bay. "That! Try to hit it past that!"

"Hey, San Fran's hitting up the bar, and it would be a shame for her to get drunk all by herself." You chuckle.

"Well..." Sam grumbles. "I guess that works, but you're paying."

"Fine, fine." You laugh.

It's a pretty short walk to the Officers' Club. As expected, the place was fairly occupied with both officers and shipgirls, with some of them accompanying each other. However, you didn't really pay them any heed.

Instead, you made a beeline straight for the bar, where you could see San Fran was already several shots in.

"Oh, hey, Hoel." San Fran nods as you approach. "I see you brought a drinking buddy."

"Yeah, well, I think Sam needs a drink as bad as you do." You say as you finally set her down in one of the seats.

"What can I get you two?" The bartender asks.

"Tequila." Sam grumbles. "Not the cheap, watered down shit. I know exactly what stock ya got."

"Of course." The bartender nods.

"Um, just rum and coke for me." You shrug.

"I'm a bit nervous, yeah." You admit as you take your rum and coke and take a deep sip. savoring the sweetness. "I mean, I've never really been in the Dark Zone, you know?"

"It's not a nice place, you can trust me on that." San Fran nods as she downs her shot.

"Buncha babies you two are." Sam grumbles, her cheeks already ruby red from one shot of tequila. "At least you can go out on missions without having to sneak on the transport like some hitchiker."

"Got something to say?" You raise an eyebrow at the buzzed Sam. "I though you didn't mind being the secretary."

"Nnnnn, only sho I don't make the Admiral worry about me." Sam grumbles, her wobbling hands trying to pour her second glass. "But I miss, you know? Going out, fightin' the good fight and tearing Abyssal ass."

"Don't you still act like a raging bitch when your blood is up, though?" San Fran asks, ever the one not to obscure her words with bullshit.

"That's the fuckin' problem!" Sam scowls as she downs her second tequila shot and slams glass down a bit harder than she should. "It's because of that shit that I gotta sit at home and let everybody else do the fighting, all with smile on my face! It's fucking infuriating!"

"Haven't you gotten help?" You ask curiously.

"Oh yeah, because a shrink can totally understand how a shipgirl mind works, much less mine." Sam rolls her eyes. "Ya think we haven't tried that? All dead ends. No results. Zip. Nada. Zilch."

Jeez, you never knew that Sam was keeping a lid on so much resentment and frustration. It was all just flowing out now that the lid was popped a bit.

"Have you talked to the Admiral about all this?" You ask her.

"Of fucking course not!" Sam rolls her eyes as she pours her third shot. "Like I said, I don't want him worrying about me. He's got a lot of other shit on his mind, after all. I should be the least of his worries."

"You know, maybe Mulberry might have some insight." You suggest. "I mean, shes pretty much the wisest out of all of us. She's bound to know something!"

"Ya know, maybe that ain't such a bad idea!" Sam hiccups. Shit, you lost count of how many glasses she's had. "Remind me to go talk to her when I shober up!"

"Ha, leave it to the destroyer escort to be a lightweight." San Fran chuckles.

"Fuuuuuuuck you." Sam shoots the middle finger to San Fran. "Hey, heeeeeey, Hoel, wanna have a try?"

Sam then raises a fresh glass of tequila, the clear liquid sloshing around inside the glass with her sloppy movements.

"Nah, I'm good." You shake your hand and gently push the glass of tequila away.

"More for me." Sam shrugs as she downs the glass. "WOOO! That's some spicy tequila!"

Yeah, it was getting to the the point where Sam probably wouldn't respond to anything you say, or at least won't be understandable. It seems like she'll be okay here with San Fran around. Maybe you should head out?

"Hey, keep an eye on this little troublemaker, will ya?" You point to Sam.

"Well, I've been babysitting the whole time I've been here, what's one more destroyer escort?" San Fran rolls her eyes. "Stay outta trouble."

"That's something I should be saying to you!" You chuckle as you finish off the last of your rum and coke and head out.

Your first instinct is in fact to go find Mulberry and talk to her. You were really in that mood to look for some good advice right now. It wasn't too hard to find her, though, considering she was pretty much always at her little cafe. There, you could see her sitting at the counter, enjoy a cup of tea as her faeries cleaned up.

"Oh, Hoel, I suppose this isn't wholly unexpected." Mulberry smiles when you enter. "What brings you here at this late hour?"

"Be straight with me, Mulberry." You give the mobile dock a determined stare ."You know what's in the Dark Zone, don't you?"

"Ah, I suppose you would come ask this sooner or later." Mulberry sets down her teacup, her cheerful smile now completely gone. "That is a difficult question to answer. As the name implies, it is a cold, dark, gentle place. A world where no life can be found."

"Except Abyssals." You point out.

"Except Abyssals." Mulberry affirms with a slight nod. "It's their spawning pool, you could say."

"Is it the Frozen Sea?"

"Yes, well, at least their idea of it." Mulberry nods. "As I said, it is a cold, gentle place. Do not expect it to be a place where the living can find comfort."

"Isn't there anything more concrete you can tell me?" You groan. "You're being really cryptic here, ya know!"

"My apologies, but it's simply difficult to describe in words." Mulberry sighs. "All I can say is that it is a place where you must not linger. It is there the whispers that beckon you will be the strongest, so keep up that stiff upper lip."

"Um, okay." You frown, still not quite satisfied.

"I'm afraid that's all I can tell you. My apologies if you didn't hear what you wanted." Mulberry says sadly.

"N-no, I wasn't expecting that much anyways." You insist.

"And what about Sam? What can I do for her?" You continue your line of questioning.

"Ah, poor little Sammy." Mulberry sighs. "She means well, but there is a darkness in her heart. A darkness she must recognize herself and come to terms with."

"Meaning...?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Perhaps you should take Sam with you into the Dark Zone." Mulberry suggests as she sips her tea. "I'm sure she'll find what she's looking for here. Or at least, have a chance to confront it."

"Take her with us?" You blink. "But, she ain't got anything to do with Abyssals!"

"If you haven't noticed, shipgirls and Abyssals do share many similarities." Mulberry points out. "Perhaps we once had common origins? Nevertheless, Sam will not find what she's looking for here, no matter how hard she tries."

Shit.

"Well, I mean, I guess I can consider bringing her, then." You frown. "But the Admiral definitely won't be happy about it.

"Well, maybe you don't have to tell him." Mulberry gives a wry smile.

"Are you telling me to just completely cut him out of the loop?" You ask warily.

"No, it's just a mere suggestion." Mulberry continues to smile. "Whether you can convince the Admiral yourself, well, not even I know what will happen."

"I suppose I should talk to the Admiral about this." You groan. "But I'm not looking forward to it."

"It's probably for the best." Mulberry nods with a smile. "Don't worry, the Admiral is nothing if not understanding. I'm sure you can find a way to convince him.

"I hope." You grunt.

"Regardless, it's far too late in the night to bring a matter like this up to him." Mulberry informs you. "I suggest you get some rest and worry about it in the morning."

"Yeah, sounds like a good idea." You grin. "Thanks, Mul."

"I always do try to help."

You bid Mulberry farewell and take your leave. You check your phone for messages, and note that Anna was inviting you over to her room. Apparently she was having pre mission jitters. Then again, Woel was still at Shen's working out some kinks with her new datalink and would probably have to stay the night at the workshop for last second adjustments...

You head over to to the workshop to check on Woel. After all, it's been a while since you've seen her.

Sure enough, you find Woel burning the midnight oil with Shen. She was sitting on one of the examination beds as Shen and his team of faeries dutifully tinkered away at her Rig.

"Oh, hey Hoel." Woel grins. "Figured you'd be spending the night with Anna or something."

"Yeah, well, I wanted to check in on you." You shrug. "Everything going fine?"

"I suppose." She nods.

"Ah, Hoel, how fortuitous!" Shen finally turns to greet you. "I was in need of a test subject for Woel's new datalink!"

"Test... subject...?" You frown.

"Just a simple connectivity check. You can manage that, can't you?" He asks. "All we need to know is Woel can make to the connection with other datalinked ships."

"Well, I guess."You shrug. "Is it ready now?"

"Of course." Shen nods as he takes a step back. "Start whenever you're ready."

You activate our datalink and open up your awareness, quickly finding the white beacon that was Woel's presence. It was simple enough to see and connect to.

"W-whoa." Woel pauses, her face flushing red. "Shit, that's a really weird feeling."

"Yeah, you get used to it." You shrug.

"Hmmmm, everything seems all green." Shen nods. "Looks like the system works."

"Finally!" Woel flops down on her bed. "Maybe once this damn scouting mission is over I can finally get my own damn room!"

"Uh huh." You narrow your eyes. "You weren't thinking about shacking with Anna, were you?"

"Of course not! What would make you think-" Woel pauses. "Oh. Oh shit."

"Yeah, you weren't doing a very good job hiding it." You cross your arms.

"Hey, I'm you, remember?" Woel crosses her arms too. "And that goes both ways! I'm pretty sure I got the impression you wouldn't mind sharing!"

"Wait, what?!" You raise an eyebrow.

"WHAT ARE YOU TWO TALKING ABOUT!?!?" Anna wails over datalink.

"Aaaaah, why are you so popular, Anna?" Paz asks.

"I take it you haven't quite figured out how to not broadcast over an open channel yet, either." Woel groans.

"Nope." You sigh.

"Perhaps we've taken science too far..." Shen mumbles under his breath as he packs up his tools.
