You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

After that sparring mach with Valentia, the next couple of days passed on without much happened. When she finally came to, Valentia was quite adamant at having a rematch in the future, and then had to hastily leave when she realized that Solaire had apparently packed up and moved on during the day she was still out cold. He was certainly an odd one, and definitely one that loved to keep on moving about.

You were actually more worried about Valentia than him, though. He seemed like he'd be able to handle anything his way despite his advanced age. But, well, it wasn't really your problem now.

What was your problem, though, was the decision of where to go next. You stare at the map rolled out before you. It wasn't too helpful, only marking locations of known cities and towns on the Frontier, with large blank spaces in between. However, you did need to choose a destination to keep your party moving. If you couldn't find a suitable quest, well, then you might as well head back to Eisenwand.

Well, there was that ruin Solaire mentioned, which he had helpfully marked on your map. However, you weren't sure if your party was ready yet. Everybody was capable, yes, but working together in enemy territory for an unknown but prolonged period of time? You weren't so sure.

Or you could try a relatively milder quest. Apparently there were bandits lurking the roads around Aldenshire, and not just the regular petty thieves and highwaymen, but well armed and well trained thugs who were robbing even experienced adventurers blind. The Guild was offering quite a sizeable bounty for their elimination.

It's decided. You roll up your map and tuck it away in your pack as you walk out out of the inn. In the square, Nino is busy chasing Romulus around as he yips playfully, as if daring Nino to try and catch him. Naru was busy going over all of your gear and supplies, making sure nothing was missing or stolen. After all, missing gear had to replaced, and replacing things cost precious money.

Morgan meanwhile was just keeping an eye on Nino, casually leaning back on a wall, her hood up and over her head to evade the wandering eyes of the townspeople.

"So, you figured out where to go?" Morgan asks, turning her head to you.

You nod and bring up a bounty poster you collected, asking for the capture or elimination of the bandits that had moved in.

"Ah, some more busywork then." Morgan nods. "You do realize that these are other people we're going up against, right? They're not predictable like monsters."

You nod. You were no stranger against humanoid opponents.

"All right." Morgan stands up straight, arms crossed. "You got a plan on how to engage these guys? Because they definitely aren't out to look for a fair fight."

You point to the road, and then your thumb over to Nino and Naru, indicating your plan.

"Trying to bait them out?" Morgan raises an eyebrow. "Makes sense. You and Naru can definitely be bait to lure them out, and I'm pretty sure I can stay hidden until needed."

You nod in agreement to Morgan's assessment.

"But are you okay with Nino coming along?" Morgan asks, her face muddled with concern now. "I mean, it doesn't feel right using her as bait as well. I mean, it would certainly embolden them..."

You point to Morgan. Maybe Nino could hide out with her?

"It could, but Nino is not exactly the subtle type, as you've probably seen." Morgan sighs. "Maybe we should leave her out of this one?"

You pound your gauntlet against your breastplate with a loud CLANK, telling her that as long as you were around, Nino wouldn't come to any harm.

"I hope you're right." Morgan sighs. "All right, if these guys are as organized as I think they are, they've probably got scouts scoping out the rounds in and out of town. You three take the road into the forest, and I'll tail you in my own way."

You nod in agreement. It takes only a few minutes to fill in Nino and Naru on the plan.

"Are you fucking serious?" Naru blanches. "Can't we just like, leave these guys to the City Guard or the Paladins? This sort of shit is their bread and butter!"

"Yay! We get to bring law and order to the land!" Nino cheers. "Plus I get to try out my new fireblast spell!"

"Let's not roast other people on a whim..." Naru groans with concern.

You then raise the bounty poster again, pointing out there's a rather sizeable reward for this task.

"Well then what are we waiting for?!" Naru smiles, suddenly all chipper and energetic. So transparent...

You point to Naru and then to the road.

"Y-you want ME to lead?" Naru groans. "You do realize the person who takes point is 90% more likely to get hit first!"

You shrug. She has defensive spells, right?

"And just because I'm a cleric doesn't mean I can just keep spamming protection blessings on myself!" Naru continues.

"Come on, let's go!" Nino says energetically as she marches forward out of the gate, Romulus following her.

"H-hey wait up, Squirt!" Naru dashes after the young mage, and you follow.

Soon enough, the three of you are calmly walking down the road, or at least as calmly as bandit bait would be in the situation.

"This really sucks." Naru groans, hefting her heavy pack. "Why'd you insist on doing this, anyways? We can make bigger bank hunting monsters or going to that Ruin Solaire mentioned to us."

"Well, it's because it's the duty of a Knight, isn't it?" Nino wonders aloud, her head bobbing up and down.

You shrug and make a punching motion into the palm of your other hand, telling them that you didn't particularly care for men who would prey on those weaker than them. You then point to Nino and swing your halberd in a classic training drill.

"Ah, need to pick up more experience for the Squirt, huh?" Naru sighs. "Makes sense, I guess, though we probably should have started with rabbits or dire rats."

"Hey! I'm not some newbie novice!" Nino pouts.

"Yep, you're just a newbie novice with highly destructive magical powers." Naru ruffles the smaller girl's green hair.

>FATE POINT GAINED!
>You now have 1 point!

You pause and spin around, one arm grabbing Nino and pulling her close to you while your other hand holds your halberd in a firm grip. Naru's battle instincts also kick in and almost immediately all three of you are bathed in the golden glow of blessing.

"Well well, looks like we're made." You hear a voice from the trees.

And just like that, you see one figure emerge in front of you, standing in the middle of the road to block any escape attempts. Another figure appears in front of Naru as well, penning you in.

So far, it was just the two of them, but you were sure they had more compatriots in hiding, ready to pounce if needed.

You also notice something strange about these bandits.

They were both Elves.

"Well well, what do we have here?" The one in front of you sneers. "We got ourselves a Templar!"

"I know, right?" His compatriot on the opposite end chuckles.

"Well this is a rare occasion." The bandit in front of you points his short sword menacingly at you. "You're surrounded. Drop your weapons and armor and the girls don't get hurt."

"Says you." Naru grunts.

"Hey, your fault for tagging along with a butcher like that!" The Elven bandit glares at you, no doubt scowling under his cloth mask. "Like I said. Drop the weapons and armor."

Off to the corner of your eye, you could see Morgan posted up in a tree, apparently unseen by the bandits. Her sapphire eyes glance at the bandit on the road, and then dart to the brush. She's obviously requesting a target.

Morgan lets her six arrows loose, each one flying into the brush, and you hear several squeals and grunts of surprise and pain. The bandit in front of you hesitates from the counter ambush, giving you the opportunity to charge forward and shoulder check him, sending your armored pauldron smashing into his chest like a battering ram.

To his credit, the bandit makes use of his natural Elven agility and manages to sloppily recover, but he's definitely off balance.

Meanwhile, behind, the other road bandit has charged, with Naru only barely able to stop his attack with her sawblade.

The rustling and shouting from the bushes around you indicated that even though their formation was disrupted, the other bandits were committing to their attack.

"Can I do it? Can I can I?" Nino asks enthusiastically, her hands already glowing orange with raw magical power.

Everything happened so quick, you barely had time to process it. Morgan was the first to see the energy buildup and wisely leapt clear of the tree she was perched in.

Naru, to her credit, grabbed Romulus and dropped to the ground, curling herself up in a ball as she surrounded herself with a dome of holy energy.

You simply stood there, expecting your armor to hold as the world around you was suddenly swallowed with fire and light.

And then just as quickly as it started, the flames were gone. Your eyes began to readjust, and you saw that you were no longer in a forest. You were in a charred, smoking crater, as if a wildfire had just swept through.

Of the bandits, you saw no sign of them.

Thankfully though, you see Morgan trudging through the ash, a shocked look on her face. You turn around to see Naru also relatively unharmed, though rather frazzled. Nino, however was on her knees, completely out of it. A sign of mana overuse.

"Ummm, are you okay?" Morgan asks with concern.

You turn to her, wondering what she meant.

"Y-your armor..." She points at you with a trembling finger.

You look down and that's when your realize your armor is smoking and smoldering, glowing red in some places.

You shrug. You don't feel a thing.

"Jeez, that's some pretty high quality armor, isn't it?" Morgan sighs in relief. "It's just... it looks real bad from where I'm seeing it."

You just give her a thumbs up to reassure her that you're totally fine, though you were going to need quite a thorough bath after this.

"So, uh, do we still get the bounty if the the bandits were totally incinerated?" Naru groans as she looks around at the devastated landscape, an almost perfect 50 meter circle of forest burned out.

"I'm sure we can find some items if we combed through the ash..." Morgan frowns. "But maybe we should find somewhere safe for Nino to recuperate."

"That's some pretty dangerous magical power I saw there, though." Morgan frowns. "I know she told us she was a bit of a prodigy but... well... that was kind of terrifying. M-maybe we should go back to Eisenwand and look her up at the Tower...?"

Well, the flesh and clothes were basically completely gone, but you at least still had some bones you could work with, like the skulls. Plus, their weapons were still fairly intact, which would serve as a good identifier.

Naru also happens to find what used to be a gold pouch, though all of the gold coins in it had melted together into one large ball of gold. She of course surreptitiously pockets it but you don't really care to call her out on it.

"Hey, I think I found something..." Morgan frowns as she digs up something from the ash and brushes it off. "Does this look like anything to you?"

You observe the item she holds up in the air, and your blood runs cold. It was heavily charred and partly burnt up, but you recognized the little chunk of dense hardwood as a badge. The badge of an Elven soldier. Unfortunately, the badge was too badly damaged for you to discern exactly which Elven kingdom it was from.

Was he a deserter? Did he steal it off someone? Or was this some sort of insidious plot?

"H-hey, are you okay?" Morgan asks with concern.

This seemed like something you would have to consult with Havel. Even though the Human and Elven Kingdoms have been at peace for decades, there had always been tensions. One of those in particular was how the Frontier would be treated. Of course, Elves being Elves, they wanted all of the unspoiled wilderness to remain unspoiled.

You nod to Morgan and Naru, letting them know it was time to start moving. You walk over and pick up Nino, continuing down the road back to Eisenwand.

"Jeez, what crawled up his asshole?" Naru wonders, either not realizing or not caring you can hear her.

"Something about those bandits got him riled up." Morgan explains.

You pay them no heed as you make your way back to the Fortress Monastery.

It takes the better part of the day to march back to Eisenwand, where you're taken in to the Fortress Monastery and you manage an audience with Havel. It wasn't as if he had any reason to refuse, after all. While the monastery serfs tended to the still unconscious Nino, Morgan and Naru accompanied you to the main hall, where Havel was waiting.

"Ah, Templar, interesting to see you back so soon." Havel rumbles. "I hear you have something important to show me?"

You nod as you hand him the Elven badge.

"By Sol..." He mutters as he works the badge over in his gauntlets. "Where did you come across this?"

"We picked it off a band of bandits ambushing adventurers on the road to Aldenshire." Morgan explains. "What it is?"

"The badge of an Elven soldier." Havel grunts. "These are not given out lightly. The wood in these is carved from sacred and highly magical trees. It's a sign of high rank and respect."

"So you're saying the Elves have troops running around in the Frontier posing as bandits?" Naru raises an eyebrow.

"I sincerely hope not. That would give us a whole host of problems." Havel shakes his head. "This is potentially destabilizing, and not just for the Frontier."

You continue to stare at Havel. What should be done about this.

"Unfortunately, not much." Havel shakes his head. "If we bring this up to the city's masters, the Elves will just say it was probably lost or stolen by the bandits. More proof will be needed."

"Oh no, I can see where this is going..." Naru groans.

"I know you must have other quests on your mind, but if you can find more of these bandits or their hideout, we should be able to obtain more evidence." Havel says.

You gaze at Havel, wondering if this was an order or not.

"Consider it a suggestion." Havel replies.

"Which means no pay." Naru sighs. "Damn charity jobs."

Also poke Naru and let her know you know about the gold, she got paid plenty for this. Also looting is a long and accepted tradition for adventurers.

You nod with determination. You'll get right on it.

"Thank you." Havel responds in gratitude. "I apologize for having to intrude on your own journey like this."

You shrug. It's no big deal.

"Aw man." Naru sighs.

"Don't worry, there's still whatever we can loot from them." Morgan pats Naru's shoulder.

"Anyways, I do have something to ask..." Havel continues as he examines the badge closer. "These badges are enchanted and are highly resistant to damage. To burn it this badly would require a fire of particular intensity..."

Havel's gaze then falls on the sleeping Nino.

"Don't tell me the girl was the cause of this?"

You nod. His suspicions were correct.

"Hmmmmm." Havel rumbles. "While I won't mourn the lives of some Elven bandits, this is rather concerning."

"In what way?" Morgan asks.

"To overcome Elven magic like this requires quite a lot of power. Something that takes mages quite a number of years to amass, much less master." Havel explains. "Now it makes sense why the Tower wants her back so badly. At first I thought they were just sending those Mana Knights over to harass me but now..."

You nod.

"I'm just warning you, there's something more to that girl than any of us know." Havel cautions. "I may not be a Witch Hunter, but even I can recognize dangerous magic when I see it."

"Don't worry, we'll keep an eye on the squirt." Naru grunts defensively. You can almost swear she's standing up for Nino.

"Well, in either case, this is something we can worry about in the morning." Havel stands up from his seat. "You are free to take lodging here. I trust you do not need to be shown around."

And with that, Havel leaves you to your own devices.

"Maybe one of us should stay with Nino." Morgan suggests.

"All she needs is some rest." Naru shrugs. "I think we should just leave her alone for now."

You merely stand up and make your way to the room were Nino is resting. Neither Morgan nor Naru do anything to try to stop you.

Nino's room was simple, as was everything in a Fortress Monastery. Nino herself was sound asleep on her bed, Romulus snuggled up on her chest as she snored softly. You take a seat at her bedside and wait...

...you're not quite sure how much time passes before Nino begins to stir awake. Her eyes open blearily and then snap open when she realizes where she is.

"H-huh? We're back at the monastery?" Nino gasps.

You nod.

"O-oh." Nino calms down. "I must have been out a long time then, huh?"

You nod again.

"Um, those bandits." Nino looks down. "Erm. Everything was a blur. What happened to them?"

You spread your arms out in an effort to pantomime a massive explosion. The bandits were completely roasted. Not a trace left.

"R-really?" Nino's eyes widen and she sits back, seemingly in a bit of shock. "That's... that's a good thing, right?"

You shake your head but put a reassuring hand on Nino's shoulder. Having to kill people, even if they were Elves, was never a good thing. However, since they were bandits, taking them out was most certainly the right thing. They wouldn't be robbing and harassing anybody else ever again.

"Hmmmm, I guess it makes sense." Nino nods. "But it was really cool, being able to go all out like that! Those old farts at the Tower would never let me do that!"

You nod. It was certainly in impressive display of her power.

"I now, right?" Nino smiles brightly.

However, you then wag your finger at her to chastise her, and then point to her bed to let her know what you were concerned about.

"O-oh, I guess I should make sure I don't knocked out from my own spell, huh?" Nino nods in realization. "Okay! I'll keep that in mind!

Romulus barks in agreement.

You nod and lean back in your chair, suddenly feeling very drowsy. Perhaps you should rest a little while in here...

Not sure if we could go for one or the other. One could potentially be as old as our great-grandmother, and the other could be very, very enthusiastic (or psycho) about Sol.
