You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You return to Degfford without much fanfare, preferring instead to return home so you can deliver gifts bought at the capital.

"Welcome back, your highness." Seren greets you as soon as you're through the door. "Are you happy to see your father again, Anwen?"

Anwen is wearing a red dress with a floral pattern and a matching crown of flowers. She looks at you with big, bright eyes and giggles. You take it as a "yes."

"It's good you're back," Esyllt says. She's doing paperwork at the kitchen table with Rhian on her lap. "Things have been dull here recently."

"That just means the city's safe," Delyth says. Her bump has gotten noticeably bigger since you left, but she shouldn't be do for several more months.

"I'll enjoy it while I can." Olwen shuffles past you to hug Seren and Esyllt. "Things were such a mess in the capital."

"It was quite fun though." Eleri enters and goes in for her own round of hugs.

"I can see that." Seren looks at Eleri's bump and smiles. "Congratulations."

"We should catch up on what we missed while we were gone," Reagan says. "Or maybe plan for our trip to Olstren?"

That leaves Myrddin carrying Rhein and Aislin, who are both pulling at his cheeks. His face is the face of misery.

After some shuffling around of tiny humans to accommodate a rather put-upon Myrddin, Eleri has Aislin, Reagan has Rhein, Olwen is looking after Anwen, and you have a very docile Rhian sitting on your lap.

"What did I miss while I was gone?"

"Everything went well," Seren says. "My mother and some of my cousins came by to help with the children, so it wasn't too hard."

"I'm in perfect health." Delyth giggles and pats her stomach. "I'm even starting to feel it kick."

"I handled the finances and made some investments in anticipation of our trip," Esyllt says. "I also took the liberty of funding some projects that would help the city."

"I hired some people to build a proper alchemy storehouse and asked some Svekkan partners to deliver some of their enchantment equipment. Degfford now has the best enchantment factory in Gwyrddarfordir. We can't match the Enchanters' Guild's laboratories for innovation, but production isn't an issue."

Oh, that is useful. You'd still need an alchemical greenhouse to supply a full army, but an enchantment factory is both a military and an economic boon. You can definitely leverage this to enhance your position in Olstren.

"That's all for now," Seren says. "It's a shame we can't stay here much longer after all the work we've done."

"Degfford will remain under my control until I die," you say. "It can't be inherited, but I can still use it to develop contacts and properties for our children."

Most of your children will be in line to inherit something or become part of a lucrative political alliance, but you need to set something aside for Rhian and your child with Eleri. Inheritance for illegitimate children is difficult and circuitous, even if it's from the mother's side. After all, few people are eager to split their fortune, and fewer still are able to do it as easily as you can.

"Since we have a new factory to put to good use, I'd like to prepare some 'gifts' for Olstren's nobles," Reagan says. "We'll have to cross their territory on the way, so it's only polite to bring them something. I'm certain they'd be willing to repay us."

"Are you certain they can be trusted?" Myrddin asks.

"I already have a safe itinerary in mind," Reagan says. "They benefited greatly from their former cooperation with his highness and they understand the value of loyalty. They won't give us any trouble."

So Reagan wants to arm a few good friends along the way. It would be nice to have some guns at your back.

>Refuse. If they want weapons, they'll pay for them.
>[Enchantment/1d8] Bring enough enchanted weapons to arm a decent guard contingent.

"Esyllt, how many enchanted weapons can we make?"

"The factory should be able to arm a decent guard contingent," she says. "It won't amount to much if we split them between several nobles, but the quality ought to make up for it, and even one or two more elite guards is enough to make a large difference in some situations."

"That's acceptable," Reagan says.

"If there's nothing else, I'd like to rest for a bit," you say. "The journey was a little tiring."

"Actually… there are some other matters that require your attention," Seren says. "Nothing urgent, but you still need to deal with it."

"Tax records, municipal purchases, minor petitions, conscription and training…" Esyllt trails off. "There's a rather large pile of documents in my office that you need to go through and sign."

"I was able to handle most of the petitions on my own, but my authority is limited after all," Seren says. "It shouldn't take too long though. Hopefully."

"Fine, fine." You pass Rhian on to Seren and get ready to do a lot of reading and catch up on your work.

"I'll start with the petitions," you say. "Seren, would you mind showing me the pile?"

"This one, your highness." She points you to the largest pile - of course - and sits on your lap. "It's been a while since we've done this. I can help you a bit if you'd like."

"I most certainly would."

"You handled these very well."

"Those nobles were acquaintances of my family," Seren says. "I just handled them find common ground."

"That doesn't make your efforts any less impressive," you say. "Contacts are meant to be used."

You go through the list of petitions one by one, reviewing each document with Seren's guidance and sign off on all the ones that depend on your authority. You don't find fault with any of them.

You move on to taxes and municipal purchases. The ledgers balance out, but you need to check some expenses with Seren. There were some unforeseen purchases to deal with a few minor problems, so you'll need to adjust your budget for the future in case this comes up again. You wouldn't want the city to go bankrupt while you're away.

You check the expenses and then finish up with the military. Training and recruitment are going both on schedule; you can't call this a real arm, but it's enough to ensure Degfford's protection from bandits, especially now that your uncle has been permanently removed from the situation.

"That's everything," Seren says. "You can rest for now, your highness."

Now you're tired from the journey and your hands are cramped from all the writing you just had to do, but you finally have some free time.

"I'm going to see Esyllt for a bit." You let Seren off your lap and kiss her.

"It's my turn to prepare dinner today anyway," Seren says. "I'll make something good for you."

"That sounds lovely."

Esyllt is up on the second floor, reading a story to Rhian.

"… so the merchant had to buy the gold on credit and wait for the auction to hit peak price." She looks up from her book to see you and smiles. "So, when the merchant sold his gold, not only was he able to make the money back, but because of the demand, prices dropped and he was able to turn a greater profit than his competitors."

"I don't think Rhian understood all that." You bring a chair next to her and sit down. "Or any of that, really."

"It's never too early to start," Esyllt said. "Since Rhian needs me, I need to take care of her properly. I don't want her to get swindled because she doesn't know how the market works."

"You've taken to motherhood well."

"Seren should get significant credit for that," Esyllt says. "She was a good example."

"I don't think she reads books to Anwen."

"No, she teaches her about flowers. That's why I started reading to Rhian. It just seemed like a good idea."

"I'll have to remember that," you say. "Maybe I can join her next time."

"There are flowers in Olstren that we don't have here," Esyllt says. "You could find a book on botany to help teach her."

"That's a good idea," you say. "Can you help me look?"

"The city's educated enough to sustain a bookstore," Esyllt says. "I can recommend one merchants use for maps and information on the other kingdoms."

Esyllt resumes her story and Rhian quietly watches her finger trace words across the pages. There aren't even any pictures to look at, but your little girl doesn't seem to mind. You stay with them and listen until Seren calls you down for dinner.
