"I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.'"

-President John F. Kennedy

Welcome to the United States Navy, the finest seagoing fighting force the world over! While we have had unprecedented control of the world's oceans since the end of the Cold War, developments of the 21st Century have led to a much smaller worldview. Chinese expansion into the South China Sea, Russian posturing in the eastern Mediterranean, and the ever increasing rise of terrorism... Allies are needed, but a prepared naval fighting force even more.

You have come from a long line of sailors, supposedly stemming all the way back to the time of John Paul Jones himself; a career in the US Navy was a foregone conclusion for you. Action! Excitement! Foreign and exotic locales! Skills and training for your future! But what kind of Naval Adventure have you embarked upon?

>Right out of high school, you walked into the local recruitment office and started the enlistment process.
>You received a prestigious scholarship to one of the finest institutions in the world; the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. You have recently graduated and received you shiny new commission as an Ensign.
>This is all old hat for you; you have just completed Command School, and have received orders to take charge of your first command.

Welcome to Navy Quest! While this quest will be more exposition heavy, the odd dice roll will most likely come up. For that, a d100 will be used, with success and degrees of success being anything above 50. As this is a new quest, vote times will be dependent on popularity.

If this thing kicks off, I plan on running at around 1800 PST on Saturdays. Status updates on status and all that will be posted on my twitter: https://twitter.com/navyfag

The future is bright, and you shall lead the way! After a brief visit home to celebrate your comissioning (you father, a retired Captain himself, never was more proud), you caught a flight to Maine to report to your first duty station: The newest ship in the Fleet - DDG-179, the USS William D. Porter. This is it, you think to yourself, barely containing your enthusiasm, this is my chance to make a difference in the world!

The taxi you caught at the airport cost a pretty penny, but you were hyped to get to Bath Ironworks and check in. The taxi driver catches your eye as you look out at the road ahead. "First duty station, I take it?" he asks.

You grin and let out a sheepish laugh. "Yeah, how could you tell?"

The driver just laughs at taps his nose knowingly. "I did my time back in the 80's; spent time playing silly bastards with the Soviets...

"...Make the most of it sir, it's a different world today."

You keep up the grin as you rub the back of your shaven head. "Any advice for a fresh ensign straight out of the Academy?"

The driver chuckles. "Keep the whole 'academy brat' on the down-low. Listen to your enlisted sailors, take good care of them, and they'll take care of you. Beyond that, I have no idea. It's a different Navy these days."

"Fair enough."

You enjoy the rest of the drive to Bath Ironworks in companionable silence, taking in the majestic views of Maine in early summer. Soon enough, the town comes into view, and the shipyard itself, current home to your first duty station, appears around a bend.

"Well, here we are; Bath Ironworks. Good luck, Ensign!"

You shake hands with the taxi driver, slipping him a generous gratuity for the long drive. You shoulder your seabag, grab ahold of your suitcase, and head into the shipyard. After asking for directions a few times, you eventually find your ship, the William D. Porter, down at the end of a pier. A small handful of sailors are visible on the decks, eyeing you with the expected level of suspicion.

You pass by a few shipyard workers, one whistling a funeral march as they pass by. Huh, wonder what that's about. As you walk up the brow, however, you hear a voice call out in your direction from somewhere on the ship.

"Woo, boy! You got a purdy mouth thar!"

You frown at that; these poor sailors definitely need your guidance!

You hand a copy of your orders to the duty officer, a leiutenant junior grade, when you finally come aboard, he frowns for a moment as he reads them before handing them back to you.

"Welcome aboard, Ensign Jones. I'll have the messenger take you to your berthing."

You almost jump out of your shoes when you hear another voice bark out from behind you, "Seaman Smith, get your ass over here!".

You turn, seeing a very angry-looking second-class petty officer frowning in the direction of an approaching seaman.

You frown at the possible mistreatment of the young sailor, but you ARE new here; should you say something?

>Yes, this poor seaman needs our guidance, and the second-class is out of line!
>No, you're too new here; better not rock the boat.

Better to not step on anyone's toes, you think. After all, your father once told you of the power behind the dreaded Second-Class Mafia.

You wait silently beside the duty officer as the second-class interrogates the hapless seaman, Smith.

"Smith, where the hell were you hiding?"

"I was, uh, taking out the uh, trash from the deck office, petty officer."

"Smith, I told you to stay in the deck office and study your PQSes."

"I, uh, was, petty officer."

"Christ Smith, at least learn to stick to your first lie."

Jesus Christ, you think to yourself, what the fuck were the recruiters thinking when they signed this guy on? You politely cough in order to spare yourself from watching Smith dig himself into a deeper hole.

The second-class gives you a sidelong glance for a moment before returning to Smith. "Smith, give the new ensign here a hand with his bags and take him to O-Country."

The deck officer taps you on the shoulder, "You'll be sharing the berth with me; good luck newbie." With that, Smith stumbles over to where your bags are and fumbles with your seabag a moment, before giving you an expectant look.

You shrug and pick up your suitcase. "Lead the way, Smith."

You nod politely to the both the deck officer and the second-class as you leave the quarterdeck. Smith leads you, almost haphazardly, throughout the ship; first taking you through the messdeck and admin areas before a wrong turn through medical. Eventually you start to question the decision to let this kid lead you around.

"Seaman Smith? Where are we going?"

He jerks slightly as you acknowledge him. "S-sorry sir, I have a hard time remembering where everything is. I think O-Country is this way."

Burkes are not the largest ships in the Fleet, but it still takes Smith a good five minutes more to finally lead you to Officer's Country. "H-here we are, sir."

"Thanks, Smith. I can find my berthing from here."

He hands you your seabag before scampering off to wherever the junior enlisted tend to hide. You let out a soft sigh before finding your new home.

"Welp, here I am."

It only takes you a few minutes to unpack. You note that your roommate, the JG from the quarterdeck, has already claimed his half of the berthing. Huh, a ROTC graduate, you note curiously examining some of the pictures he posted around the compartment.

You don't officially check in until tomorrow, so what do you do with the rest of your day?

>Call your parents, let them know you made it.
>Explore the ship and begin familiarizing yourself with the Willie D.
>Screw that, it's time to go out into town and celebrate!

Rolled 1 (1d2)

Well, looks like we have a tie. I'll roll a 1d2 to break it.

>1: Call your parents
>2: Touch things
>>
>>1562236

Looks like Ensign Jones is a smart one; calling dear ol' dad instead of touching shiny things.
>>
>>1562240
What kind of tone is this quest heading for, technothriller (Clancy-verse), slice of life, alien invasion (Battleship) or post-apocalypse (The Last Ship)?
>>
>>1562304

Well, potential war is the background, so some Clancy-esque themes like a new Cold War will be there. Depending on player choice, however, it'll either be slice-of-life or dark comedy.
>>
You decide to play it safe and decide against exploring your new home; there will be time for that tomorrow. Instead, you head outside of the ship to it's weatherdeck and call home. After a few rings, someone on the other end picks up.

"Joneses residence, how can I help you?" It's your younger sister, still in high school.

"Hi sis, how's it going?"

"Johnny! Mom! Dad! Johnny's on the phone!"

You smile as you hear raised voices from the other end, and the mad barking of the family dog. Eventually you hear mad scrabbling from the other end. "Son? That you?" You're on speaker phone.

"Hey Dad, I made it."

"Oh Johnny, I'm so proud of you!" you hear your mom cry.

"Thanks mom."

"How's the ship, son?"

You glance around yourself, taking in what's visible of the ship in the early evening light. "It's good, dad. The Willie D's a fine looking ship."

"That's good son. Take care of her, and she'll take care of you."

"Made any friends yet, bro?" your sister queries.

"Got a roommate, that's about it. I just came on board a few hours ago."

You hear your dad brush away your mom and sister as he takes up the phone.

"Son, make the most of this. You're a new officer on a new ship; that's how careers and legacies are made."

"I know, dad."

"Listen to your Chiefs and petty officers, study hard, make a positive impression on your CO-"

"I know dad, you told me all this before I left."

You dad chuckles from the other end. "Your whole future is ahead of you, son. Make the most of it..."

You talk with your family for several more minutes, watching the steadily encroaching darkness wash over the harbor. Eventually, you say goodnight to your family and head back into the ship to get some sleep. Tomorrow, your first day on the William D Porter begins...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5lI0i4oqJw
Eventually, the call of Reveille hits your ears, snapping you out of your sleep. Fuck, that whistle is annoying.

You're awake, so you might as well get up and make a positive impression! You roll out of your bunk and quickly realize your roommate either didn't sleep in here last night, or is already up and about. You want to make the best possible first impression, so you toss on your dress whites and check yourself in the mirror: Everything looks squared away.

You leave your berthing, closing the door behind you, only to rapidly realize two things: You're hungry, and you have no idea where you're supposed to go muster.

"Shit."

Hang on, That's a little high to be a Burke (DDG-126 is the highest planned right now, and it is realistically a decade out), and way too low to be a Zumwalt (which start at DDG-1000).
