You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

It was a fairly uneventful night as you kept vigil over Nino. You had to admit, you were pretty impressed with her sheer magic potential, though it was pretty terrifying.

When you wake up, you notice the thin rays of the morning sun filtering through the window and onto your armor. In addition, Nino's bed was now empty, the blanket gone and instead draped around your shoulders.

Heh, pretty thoughtful for a kid.

After getting yourself cleaned up, you head over to the main hall, where as usual, you find your party eating breakfast. A simple meal of bread and sausages today, but still nutritious and flavorful enough. You notice Nino wolfing down plate after plate, a small stack of them piled up on the table next to her. No doubt a side effect of depleting her mana so quickly .

"Morning." Morgan acknowledges your presence.

You nod to her, and then look around noticing that Havel was not present.

"He went off into the city to take care of some business." Morgan explains. "Guess he's going to try to talk to the Church about the Elven bandits."

"Hah, good luck to him." Naru rolls her eyes. "Buncha uptight, Sol-fearing nerds. They probably won't even let him through the door."

"So what's the plan today?" Morgan asks you as you sit down.

You point to the sigil of Sol mounted above the doorway, clearly signalling your intent.

"Well, I'm sure this will be interesting and full of adventure." Naru sighs. "But I think I'll pass on this. I'll probably just make more trouble if I'm seen with you."

"I take it you're not popular there?" Morgan sighs.

"Like I told you before, I've had... disagreements with some of the clergy." Naru grumbles. "If you and the squirt wanna tag along with him, go on ahead."

Hm, guess the matter was more serious than you thought.

You nod. You weren't about to force Naru to go somewhere she had no wish to be.

"Well? When can we go?" Nino stands up, her newest empty plate clattering on the table. "I always wanted to see the inside of the Church!"

"He still has to eat his breakfast." Morgan chides.

"O-oh yeah." Nino sits back down, brimming with youthful energy again.

You resist the urge to chuckle and spear a piece of sausage with your fork. You then carefully lift the visor of your helmet just enough to slide the food into your mouth.

And it's at that moment you realize Morgan, Nino, and even Naru were staring at you intently. At least, they were until they realize you had noticed them, and they quickly go back to pretending they weren't interested

You wonder what that was all about.

---

After finishing breakfast, you, Morgan, and Nino leave the Fortress Monastery and head for Eisenwand proper. The Church was located at the center of the ringed city, so it was going to be quite a walk to get there...

You and Morgan travel together through the crowded city streets, doing your best to maintain eye contact with Nino, who insisted on dashing ahead of you both. Fortunately, you don't see any suspicious characters of Mana Knights, like those twins who had tried to apprehend her before. Well, the less trouble the better.

"Come on! Come on!" Nino giggles as she turns to face the both of you. "You two are sl- oof!"

In her youthful exuberance, Nino had failed to take her situational awareness into account and she backed up straight into another person, nearly knocking her over.

"Honestly, a mage like you should be more careful." Valentia chides as she helps Nino back up to her feet. Valentia's gaze then meets yours. "I see we meet again, Templar."

You nod in acknowledgment.

"Though it's odd to see you here." Valentia turns to the golden gates leading to the Church Ward. "You weren't thinking of gaining entry to the Church, were you?"

You nod.

"We heard Havel had gone in there." Morgan explains.

"I see..." Valentia pauses. "I know an alternate passage. It's not quite as glamorous, but I can get you inside with no questions asked. If you would accept my help, that is."

You nod in agreement. You'd gladly accept Valentia's assistance.

"Excellent!" Valentia smirks. "You owe me another sparring match someday, then!"

Ah, you should've figured she had something up your sleeve. Well, her request was innocent enough.

"This way." Valentia motions for the three of you to follow her lead.

"Ooooh, is it a secret passage?" Nino asks in wonder. "Like, like so important figures can leave in secret if the Church was ever attacked?"

"No, it's just a service entrance." Valentia shrugs. "It's more private, at the very least."

The young paladin leads you into some back alleys branching off from the main road. After a few snaking turns, you come across a rather nondescript set of double wood doors, the sigil of the Church of Sol prominently mounted above it. Valentia casually walks up to the door, pulls a small pendant from her belt, and presses it into a matching groove carved into the door.

The double doors then click and swing open. Immediately inside were two more Paladins standing guard.

"There with me." She says simply as she marches past. It seems those three words from her are enough, as the Paladins don't move muscle as you and your companions pass.

And then it was a set of narrow hallways, like a sprawling maze as Valentia casually leads you through as if it was an every day occurrence.

You tap Valentia on the shoulder, grabbing her attention.

"What do you need, Templar?" She asks curiously.

You point to her, then to the ground, wondering what she was doing back at the Church so soon. Wasn't she still pursuing her father?

"Ah, well, I was called back since the Grand Paladins decided to send... additional assistance to convince my father to return to the fold."

"Additional assistance?" Morgan wonders aloud.

"An army of more Paladins?" Nino asks in anticipation.

"Trust me, it's just as ominous sounding to me as it does to you." Valentia sighs. "All right, we'll have to decide which path to take from here. We can either cut through the main training hall, or the hospital ward..."

The very first thing you notice about the hospital ward was that the entire area was impeccably clean. White marble lined the walls and floor, with white linen beds laid down in rows where the wounded and ailing could rest. Clerics in their signature white robes paced up and down the aisles to tend to their charges.

You do note ,however, that many of the clerics looked to be rather young, similar to Valentia's age. You suspect that they were lower ranking trainees, like the Order's initiates. Ever so often, you spot an older cleric, who was most certainly a superior of some sort.

And the moment you enter the hospital ward, all of the clerics immediately stop what they're doing and stare in awe at you.

"Valentia!" One of the clerics shuffles up to her, her voice a deep whisper as if she thought you couldn't hear her. "So the rumors are true? You're eloped with a TEMPLAR?"

"W-where in the Great Dark did you hear that/!?" Valentia cries out in surprise. "Nothing of the sort is happening!"

"Wooooow, they're much taller than I thought they'd be..."

"Their armor really is black..."

The murmurs and whispers continue as the clerics all gather around. Morgan immediately pulls up her hood and steps back, blending into the background to avoid attention. Nino, however, steps in front of you defensively, as if to ward off a horde of witches after your blood.

"Hey! No touching!" Nino pouts.

"What is going on here?!" One of the older clerics shrills. "All of you! Back to your duties or you'll spend your lunch hour in prayer!"

"Eeek!" The young clerics squeak as they all quickly scramble back to their stations.

"Honestly..." The older cleric sighs as she strides up to Valentia. "I don't know what you're thinking, bringing a Templar into the Church, but I won't ask."

"Thank you, Miselle." Valentia nods. "I appreciate it."

"Also, just as a word of warning..." Miselle leans in closer. "The Grand Paladins sent the High Cleric to resolve the matter with your father."

"W-what?!" Valentia's face turns white as the marble in the room.

"And she in fact is headed down here right now."

"NO!" Valentia groans and turns to you, a desperate look on her face. "Y-you three! You'll need to hide!"

You get the feeling that Valentia's concern is not so much for your safety, but something to do with her pride...

>You should listen to her.

The character art Merc has been using for Valentina is an Etrian Odyssey character who through some of the supplumental manga is called "Teach" (nominally because as a face of the franchise, she teaches you about the mechanics in the manga)

She also has the distinction of being Worst Girl, pic related is best (and not just because the medic class is extremely broken in the first EO game, but that helps)

You stand resolute. Templars do not hide. They stand their ground and fight.

"Why aren't you moving?!" Valentia wails, trying to push you off into a little side alcove, but you stand firm and refuse to be budged.

"What's so bad about this High Cleric person?" Nino wonders.

"There's nothing bad about her!" Valentia grunts. "It's just-"

"Ah, Vally, I heard you had returned!"

You look up to see another cleric, though this one was far different from the others you had seen. She wore robes that were somehow whiter and purer, nearly blinding you just from looking at them. Her pale blond hair was accentuated by a gold halo hovering above her head, smoldering with the the flame of Sol. However, what was most noticeable where the two golden wings sprouting from her back, giving her an angelic look. You weren't sure if the wings were actually a part of her, or merely some master crafted artifact.

"I told you not to call me that!" Valentia groans. "Especially when other people are around! You're just like Dad!"

"Oh, don't be like that!" The High Cleric coos and hugs Valentia, who still looked thoroughly unamused.

"And you must be the Templar I had heard about!" The High Cleric smiles as she straightens back up, her wings twitching a bit as she does so. "My apologies. I am High Cleric Solana, and as you might have figured, I happen to be Valentia's mother."

"Wait, your parents are the Grand Master AND the High Cleric of the Church?" Nino gasps. "That's amazing!"

"IT'S A CURSE!" Valentia wails.

Well, this was interesting. It looks like this young Paladin here had a much grander lineage than you had initially thought.

"Now now, don't be like that!" Solana ruffles Valentia's perfectly combed hair. "I've heard you've had trouble reining in you father. Is that true?"

"Well..." Valentia mumbles.

You decide to stoically wait for Valentia to explain herself. This was really no place for you to butt in.

"Damn, that's Valentia's mom?" Morgan mutters as she slinks forward. "What's with the wings?"

"An ancient artifact passed down to High Clerics for generations." Nino whispers back. "The Solar Wings are said to draw energy directly from Sol's light itself to fuel the wearer's magic. Theoretically, she can cast blessings infinitely as long as she stays under Sol's light."

"Huh." Morgan nods. "And the halo?"

"The Sun Ring bestows powerful protection magic on the wearer." Nino explains. "They're also said to grant eternal youth, though I think that's just a myth."

"She certain does look really young." Morgan notes.

You turn to the two girls and put a finger up to your helmet, requesting they quiet down.

"W-well, you know Dad." Valentia grumbles. "Never listens to anyone. I managed to track him down a few days ago thanks to the help of this Templar, but he gave me the slip again."

"Oh dear." Solana smiles. "I wouldn't expect anything else from Solaire. And you said this Templar assisted you?"

Valentia nods.

"Ah, I've been hearing tales of a Templar wandering around the Frontier." Solana smiles as she turns her gaze to you. "I would have thought all of you would be crusading in the north, what with the Orcish incursions."

You shake your head and point to the seal on your chestplate, indicating your status as a Champion.

"Ah, a beast hunter. That makes sense now." Solana nods, apparently not phased at all at the fact you weren't actually speaking. "Ah, I also heard there was a certain down on her luck cleric traveling with you. You don't happen to know Naru, do you?"

"Oh, excellent!" Solana continues to smile, but you get the feeling that it's become a little more mournful now. "Can you tell her that there's no hard feelings between us? She'll understand."

You nod again. It shall be done.

"Excellent!" Solana's smile becomes more cheerful again. "Now, what would bring a Templar, a Mage, and Ranger to our humble abode?"

"Er, we were looking for Havel. We heard that he arrived here to talk with the leadership here." Morgan steps up to explain the situation in your stead. "We just wanted to check on him."

"Ah!" Solana's eyes flash and her wings flutter for a bit. "How about a bit of tea while we wait? I think the garden here is grossly underappreciated, don't you think, Vally?"

"I suppose." Valentia nods, and then her eyebrow twitches. "Please don't call me that, I'm not a kid anymore."

"I'm sure you aren't." Solana chuckles. "Would you like to join us."

"Erm, I have some business in the training hall. Perhaps another time." Valentia replies, and then takes one quick glare at you. "You better behave yourself while you're here, Templar."

You assure her with a simple thumbs up.

"Right, well, I'll leave then in your care then, Mom." Valentia says the last part a bit awkwardly as she quickly shuffles out of the hospital ward, still a bit embarrassed.

"Oh, that girl." Solana smiles warmly. "Come, come, there's so much to talk about! In return I'll tell you utterly embarrassing stories about Valentia's childhood!"

"Nice!" Nino grins.

"Is it okay to violate her trust like that?" Morgan wonders.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm her mother, so that makes it okay!" Solana giggles.

Hm, perhaps she wasn't quite as angelic as you had initially thought.

Soon enough, you, Morgan, Nino, and Solana were sitting around an old but well crafted wooden table on an upper terrace of the Church ward, which had been converted into a lush garden. The ground was covered in a layer of cool grass, and all around were colorful flowers and blossoms. To top it off, the table was placed in the soothing shade of an ancient looking tree.

"So." Solana twirls her fingers as three cups of tea slide across the table to you and your companions. "It's been quite a while since I've seen my husband. How has Solaire been faring these days?"

You shrug and make a few faux sword swings with your arm, trying to tell Solana about Solaire's continued fighting prowess.

"I think what he's trying to say is that Solaire seems to be doing very well for his.... advanced age." Morgan speaks up.

"Hm, then you've never seen him in his prime, then." Solana smirks as she sips her tea. "Though it is good to hear that he's still doing well. He was always rather anxious and nervous about 'losing his touch.' Whatever that means."

"So, are you going to look for him yourself?" Nino asks.

"It may come down to that." Solana nods. "The Grand Paladins had correctly figured that I would be the one Solaire would most likely listen to."

"But you don't seem to be in a hurry to get him back." Morgan says suspiciously.

"Ah, you're a sharp one." Solana smiles as she sets her cup down. "I admit, I do have some rather selfish feelings. It's rare for me, Solaire, and Vally to all be together at the same time. It feels very nostalgic, so I'm in no particular hurry."

"Oh, so you're gonna party with Valentia to look for Solaire?" Nino gasps.

"Well, if you put it that way..."

Ha, Valentia ending up adventuring with her parents...

You nod in approval. You're sure it will do her some good.

The serene atmosphere is then interrupted with the loud metallic stomps of heavy armor. You suspect you know who it is, and turn to see Havel approaching, his jagged black armor contrasting heavily with the lush greenery of the garden.

"Templar, I didn't think you would follow me here." Havel rumbles as he nods respectfully to Solana. "High Cleric."

"Marshal." She replies softly.

"So, what did the Church say?" Morgan asks.

Havel sighs and sits down on a spare chair, the poor wooden thing creaking and straining under the combined weight of the man and his armor.

"The Church will not take any official action so as not to rile up the resident Elf population." Havel growls. "They took the soft approach, as expected."

"Well, that is a legitimate concern." Solana points out. "Eisenwand is the home to thousands of Elves. If we start making wild accusations of Elven raiders prowling the forest, there will be riots in the streets."

"Pah, the sign of a weak city, then." Havel retorts and looks to you. "It appears that you will be on your own, Templar."

"Hm, perhaps me and Vally could be of assistance?" Solana asks with a sly smile. Was she trying to test you?

You nod. Solana and Valentia's help would be appreciated.

"Of course, we would have to exercise some... discretion on this." Solana winks. "But we will be ready when you call for us. Perhaps Solaire will drop by as well! He has a habit of falling into adventure!"

You then feel Nino tugging at your arm. You turned your head to see that she was still sitting, but fidgeting. A clear sign that she was getting bored and anxious.

And considering her power, you still wanted her in a good mood.

You nod to Nino, letting her know she could speak up now.

"Hey, hey, can we go see your Archives?" She asks. "I heard you have all sorts of texts and books stored in there that you can barely find anywhere else!"

"Hmmmm, I suppose there wouldn't be any harm in that." Solana nods. "Though of course, there will be sections of the Archives that hold rather... sensitive materials. Naturally, you won't be permitted access to those areas."

"Okay, okay!" Nino nods, eager to go. "Let's go!"

"I shall return to the Fortress Monastery then." Havel says as she stands up, giving the ailing chair a reprieve. "Best of luck to you, Templar."

"Come along, then." Solana says as she leads you, Morgan, and Nino out.

After being led through some more marble hallways, you're finally brought to a might set of doors, which open to Solana's badge. The Archives looked simple enough. It actually did not look all that different from the library in the Fortress Monastery, though the Archives were definitely much larger. Rows and rows of texts lined the massive room, bot in book and in older scroll form.

"It's a far cry from the Main Archive, but this one does have quite the collection." Solana explains. "You're free to browse for a little while. Just stay way from the cordoned off areas."

"Okay!" Nino can hardly stay still as she rushes off towards the...

You try to follow Nino as best you can as she dashes for the section documenting the miracles of Sol. Or more generally, all of the blessings and spells that members of the Church are taught to carry out their duties. Was Nino looking to learn more about Solar magic?

"Haha! Yes! I found it!" You hear Nino cheer as she pulls out an old and well used tome.

You lean down to to get a better look at the cover.

THE MIRACLES OF SAINT AUGUSTINE

You look back at Nino, wondering what the significance was.

"She was one of the leaders in the field of healing magic!" Nino explains. "Almost all of the healing spells the Church uses can trace their roots back to her work! I heard there were a few really powerful spells that she never publicly revealed though, which is why I wanted to find her book!"

You put a hand to your chin. It sounded like Nino had planned this all out.

"I... I want to help Naru become the best cleric!" Nino declares. "If she knows the most powerful healing spells, they'll have to take her back, right?"

You shake your head and point to yourself, Morgan and then to Nino.

"Oh, I guess I'd understand if you wanna keep a SUPER CLERIC in our own party!" Nino chuckles. "But that means we'd probably have to pay her extra..."

A LOT extra.

"Well, either way, I'm pretty sure I can get the gist of the book and teach whatever is in it to Naru!" Nino says cheerfully.

ALL HEAL: A powerful healing spell that bombards a localized area with energy, healing all those standing in the area of effect. Powerful but likely to drain most if not all of the caster's mana.

SOLAR RAY: One of the few spells devised that takes advantage of the destructive aspects of Sol's light. The caster may project a beam of pure, focused sunlight that will incinerate anything caught in its path.

SANCTUARY: A spell saved for the most dire of times, the caster may create a powerful shield around an individual target, protecting them from any and all harm. However, this works both ways, essentially trapping the target within the protective bubble of energy.
