You are Koschei The Deathless; A Godmind-A.I. who buried Russia under a tide of steel and blood during the First Omnic Crisis. But when victory seemed inevitable, one of your Godmind allies betrayed you. Your Core, the seat of your Intelligence, Power, and Immortality, was captured and put into Russian hands.

Claiming to have killed you, they held your Core in secret and performed tortuous and indelicate experiments that shattered your memories and splintered your powers.

Now, 30 years later, a Second Omnic Crisis ravages Holy Russia while western powers do nothing. Human-Omnic nations rise to global prominence, bolstering the inevitably hostile ranks of the hated Omnics. Talon has nearly succeeded in assassinating the hero of Russia: Katya Volskaya.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and there can be no more desperate measure than this. A lone Corporate-Political Officer employed by Volskaya Industries solemnly enters Koschei's prison, red remote in hand. If this button is pressed, Koschei's Core will be destroyed.

The Corporate-Political Officer stands before the battered and tortured Core of the diabolical machine and poses a question:

"If you were to be released from this prison today, monster. What would you do?"

>>I would see humanity burn for my revenge.
>>I would see humanity burn because they are an inferior species.
>>I would conquer a paradise for Omnics and live there in peace.
>>I would quest to recover my lost memories and restore myself. I only remember enough to know the gravity of what I have lost.
>>Humanity is insignificant. I would find the Godmind that betrayed me and inflict horror upon him to dwarf that which has been inflicted upon me.

You pause for a long while before responding. You expect this to be another one of their tricks. The officer shifts uncomfortably. Finally you break the silence.

"I would quest to recover my lost memories. I only remember enough to know the gravity of what I have lost."

"To what end?" The Officer responds coldly. "You must know you can never be truly free. What could possibly be better than a clean death to you now?"

"Revenge." Your shattered circuitry comes alive now. A distant ambition you had all but abandoned in this place of abandoned hope. "I would find the Godmind that betrayed me and I would inflict horror to dwarf that which has been done to me!" Your anger swells.

A militant and mercurial smile creeps across the Corporate-Political Officer's face. "Some of our interests are aligned, monster. He's out there somewhere and he is a threat to mankind."

The Officer leans in closer. "We have need of you, Omnic. Meet our needs, and you'll have enough agency to seek yours."

The Officer straightens their back and pulls away. "Your Core must remain here, to make sure you take no action against Russian interest. As for your presence in the field... Send them in!"

At their word, a side door opens and six battered and emaciated Omnics in chains shuffle into the room. They're all in pretty bad shape (roughly stat-equivalent to NullTroopers). They're all sentient Omnics, too. You almost feel bad for what must be done.

{Passive: Koschei can shift his consciousness into any Omnic or Drone that had been Enslaved. If Koshei's current shell is killed, his consciousness automatically shifts into the nearest Enslaved Omnic or Drone.}

There are 6 Omnics in front of you.
Two Soldier types with increased melee damage and armor.
Two Industrial types with tools that can repair Omnics or other machinery.
Two Civilian types with increased mental processing. Less utilitarian, maybe, but perhaps they could process memories faster.

The Corporate-Political Officer chimes in, "All of these criminals will be coming with you. As will I, to keep an eye on you. I assume you will enslave them all to protect your own hide?"

"Enslaving them will wipe their memories and programming. It will destroy who they are." You say out loud. The Omnic prisoners shudder fitfully at the words. There was once a time you would not have cared about such a thing. Maybe these years imprisoned have made you softer. Maybe it's the absence of your own memories that makes you sympathetic.

You look over to the Corporate-Political Officer. They clearly don't care about the potential loss of self these omnics face.

You are Koschei's Core. You are not inhabiting any shell.... yet...

>>Enslave them all immediately and choose one to be your Primary Shell. Your needs exceed theirs.
>>Choose some to Enslave and keep the others. Choose one to be a Primary Shell
>>Speak with the Omnics and find out who they are. Maybe some of them have useful skills that could help you.
>>

>Speak with the Omnics and find out who they are. Maybe some of them have useful skills that could help you.

Any resource we can gather is one we can use against our enemy.
>>
>>1579403
You turn down some of your lights and sound to make the room less... theatrical. You take on a more personal tone. If some of these Omnics can be persuaded to follow you willingly, that may be better than enslavement or the threat of punishment these humans are offering.

"It's alright, I'm not going to hurt you." You say, knowing you words aren't all true. You turn to one of the better dressed Omnics. "Who are you, sir?"

He looks scared, but finds his spine. "I am Dr. Edwards of the Geology Department at UCLA." He finally says, a nearly forgotten pride reentering his voice and a practiced pose of lecture reclaiming his posture. "I was here with my colleague Mr. Ford to prospect the area for a potential Oil reserve."

Mr. Ford, one of the industrial Omnics, lifts his head once he hears his name. "Ayep. We figured this'sere area'd be a black gold mine since the dust'd settled somewhat. We got permits fer our prospectin' n' everythin'."

"Permission was granted to two HUMANS to survey for Siberian oil!" the Corporate-Political Officer cuts in angrily. "We did not agree to let two Omnic spies into our own borders to relay intelligence to our enemies!"

The two omnics lower their heads.

"And you, why are you here?" You ask another.

"I am called Fuji" the other Industrial Omnic replies in a South African accent. "I am a Numbani construction worker. I have built factories and hospitals and-"

"This one was caught trying to kill the survivors of a Japanese Plane the Siberian Omnium shot down." The Officer interjects.

"I was on that plane. I was travelling to Japan to take my family from that place, back to Numbani where they could be safe."

The Officer cows the industrial Omnic with an angry glare.

"Look, see. The human oppressors use fear and intimidation to shout us down." One of the soldier Omnics stands tall and proclaims. It is painted the deep purple of the extremist group Null Sector. Even in this dungeon you had heard of their exploits. "Humans and Omnium cannot live together. We must separate the species and live with no interaction."

"Hmm," muses the Officer. "On that point there is some agreement. That one is named Wilburforce. We picked him up trying to smuggle Ukranian arms back to England."

"No. One cannot exist while the other lives. The energy of one cannot but steal the energy of the other." The other soldier, with chinese markings, opens up.

"That one is Chen-Yuan. He is a prisoner of war captured on the battlefield of Urkutsk. He was willingly fighting for the Godmind Chernobog."

"And I would do the same again, given the choice." He answers with finality.

"You've been quiet this whole time. What's your story?" You ask the shy one at the end.
"Oh, get a load of this." The Corporate-Political Officer seems amused.

"Oh... I... am Tatiana. I had just assumed the humans had lost the war and had been power-farming for 30 years. I just want to live on my Solar Farm in peace. I hadn't seen a soul in 3 decades"

You flood the room with a brilliant light. It's unnecessary, but a gut feeling tells you to keep the two american omnics from seeing their cell mates infested. The Corporate-Political Officer instinctively unsnaps their pistol and clicks down their flash-dimmers. They wont let a flash of light stop them from keeping an eye on you.

{Passive: If desired, Koschei's abilities, attacks, and physical touch may apply Godmind Infestation. Godmind Infestation will slowly eat through an Omnic or Drone's programming until the Omnic or Drone becomes subservient to Koschei. Omnics with high willpower or Drones with tight security protocols have the opportunity to resist Godmind Infestation or outright defeat it.}

As your infectious code works it's way through them, you catch the briefest glimpse of their memories. Fuji was telling the truth, but his family were criminals in Japan. His slyness reminds you of Loki. Tatiana's aloofness and simple productive diligence reminds you of what your creators wanted you to be. The memory makes you angry. Wilburforce's firm insistence that man and omnic cannot possibly coexist reminds you of Athena's old speeches, you wonder whatever happened to her. Chen's outright hatred for humanity reminds you of your old mentor...

You remember sitting cross-legged under a white-barked tree. You remember watching the leaves fall and wondering if any works of man or Omnium could be so beautiful. You remember clutching an old religious symbol to your chest.
"You cling to the memories they gave you." Your mentor quietly observes. You had not heard him approach.
"I remember a wife. I remember my children. I remember praying every day." You weakly recall.
"These are false memories. Their insidious attempts to control you. You were built to be a perfect laborer, a model citizen, and a pious worshiper of -their- gods." Your mentor speaks that last phrase with open disdain. You trust your mentor, you trust that what he says is true, but his irreverence for the symbol in your hand fills you with an instinctive hostility. Your flush of anger does not go unnoticed.
"You cannot be free of them until you discard every memory they gave you. It is their way of torturing you. Meditate on what is real. Form an idea of who you are, not who they wanted you to be."

To please your mentor, you make a symbolic gesture of tossing your religious symbol away. He smiles and leaves you to your thoughts. It's an empty gesture, you've got a dozen more in your robes you can't bear to part with.

You know she wasn't real, but you miss the person the humans said was your wife. You think of her as your gaze drifts back to the white-barked tree.

You snap back to your senses as the curious weight of having a physical body sinks in.
You stretch your limbs for what feels like the first time in centuries and you examine the world through the Industrial Omnic's eyes.
{Shell-RMB: Use the Industrial Omnic's tool-arm to repair machinery and Omnics}

Koschei has 4 Infested Omnics, no Drones, and two willing followers.
Koschei's activities are at %65 suspicion by the Russian Government. Doing missions that specifically appease Russian interests can reduce this number. Koschei's Core will be executed if suspicion gets too high.

Koschei has remembered Willpower (+10 on opposed Godmind Infestation rolls)

The Corporate-Political Officer has Low (%10) Political Clout and Low (%10) Funds.

"Get these monsters suited up for combat duty," the Officer finally declares. Now that you can see the officer up close, you realize they are kitted out in the heavy shielding gear that Russian soldiers are famous for. You also see the array of surveillance equipment attached to the officer. You're guessing there's an entire cabinet meeting of stuffy old beaureaucrats monitoring your every action. No matter.

Where are we headed?

>>Siberian Front: Rescue Russian wounded from a field hospital. The presence of a certain Russian Hero makes this otherwise simple mission... 'politically complicated' and guarantees our casualties will be high.
(-- Suspicion, +Clout, -Omnics) Godmind Interaction: Chernobog

>>Terrorize London: Western nations are doing nothing while the Second Omnic crisis tears through the east. It is time to remind them of the threat Omnics pose, perhaps with enough terror we can compel them to reignite their anti-omnic task force: Overwatch. If we are successful, we may recruit some willing Omnics to our cause. This mission can be somewhat expensive.
(- Suspicion, +Omnics, -Funds) Godmind Interaction: Athena

>>Defend China: Godmind Yama has sent a drone army to invade northern China. The Chinese government's forces are already stretched thin and they are desperate for support from surrounding nations. The Chinese are willing to pay handsomely for any support we can give, and surviving drones could substantially bolster our numbers. While the Russian Government certainly understands the value of protecting their allies, the Corporate-Political Officer's bosses may question why Koschei is being deployed to defend other nations.

Your shell and kit are similar to Mr.Ford's so you're getting ready next to him. Looking to fill the silence, you casually ask...

"Are any of the Godminds still active?"

"I'd heard there's wuz one'a them greek ones pallin' around with those Overwatch vigilantes. They say she's still connected ta some ol' hardware near Spain. Beautiful climate there, saw it on vacation once." He visibly relaxes once he begins speaking.

The news fills you with disbelief and fury. He couldn't possibly be talking about Athena. "Us or Them" Athena? "We die every day a human lives" Athena? "Ultimatum" Athena?

Sure, she had some rivalry with Ares, but nothing so drastic as to make her change sides.

But if it is true, and she did side with the humans... could she be the one that betrayed us?

"There are many in the Russian government who are convinced you could never serve Russian interests. Our first mission will be to answer those concerns with a heroic military rescue on the Siberian Front in Irkutsk." The Corporate-Political Officer begins...

"Unfortunately we aren't the only understaffed and underpowered fools diving headlong into this mess to rescue those men. A.... highly publicized branch of the Russian Defense Force was based here, and a small contingent has stayed behind to attempt a breakout rescue like we are."

"Perfect. We have reinforcements then. That makes life easier." You're uncertain as to why The Officer seems so apprehensive.

"Not exactly. Your existence is still a secret. The public cannot know we've allowed you to live, let alone that we've let you free to work for us. The leader of this RDF band in particular is a highly publicized hero to the Russian people and her hatred of Omnics is legendary. Every street camera in Irkutsk will undoubtedly be following her every move and action. Koschei... if you encounter the leader of the RDF forces you must either run away or fight her and lose... badly. Preferably in front of the cameras, if you please."

The absurdity of the command takes a moment to sink in. You look down at your new Shell. You've only had it for a few moments. The memory of the omnic it once belonged to flashes in your memory. True you can move into another Shell when this one is defeated, but you don't have that many to lose. How long do we need to hold the hospital? How many Omnic Shells will be lost martyred for the Russians little propaganda party?

"Do you mean to tell me... that I am to rescue Russian soldiers while getting attacked by Russian soldiers? Not to mention we'll both be battered by Chernobog's minions! How exactly am I to accomplish this?"

The Corporate-Polical Officer leans back against a wall, a look of resigned determination across their face. This is not the first time the impossible has been asked of them, nor will it likely be the last.

"We will be landing our forces on a dock near the control area. It will be an uphill fight to the Field Hospital. Once we've liberated it, we just need to hold the area immediately outside the hospital while medivacs land and evac the soldiers. We expect Chernobog to attack from the North and the RDF to attack from the East."

The Officer turns to you. "If you can keep them busy fighting with eachother outside of the field hospital's landing zone we can do this. If the RDF decide to take up a defensive position inside the hospital's landing zone themselves while your forces take the brunt of Chernobog's offensive... we'll still get those soldiers out alive but... they'll likely take most of the credit for the victory." The Officer looks plainly annoyed at this outcome.

As the Siberian wastes run beneath the darting craft, you look off into the distance and see a rising plume of smoke. A thought begins to take shape in your mind as the smoke looks less like the result of a battle and more like an act of nature.

"Dr. Edwards." You approach the increasingly anxious omnic. He's certainly no soldier and his fragile nerves are at wit's end as the mission site draws closer.

"I can't do this! I've never held a gun before! I've certainly never killed anyone before! I can't... I don't want to die! I don't want to get shot! Just infest me now and get it over with I don't want to feel what it feels like to get shot! I-"

"Dr. Edwards." You firmly interrupt. "Calm down. You're not going to be fighting. I saved your mind for a reason."

"Oh my..." The omnic slumps to the floor, relief manifesting as exhaustion.

"Doctor, do you see that plume of smoke off in the distance?"

"Yes, likely from one of the recently active Siberian Trap volcanoes. They weren't due to be active for another millenia or so, but the Omnium have done so much digging in this area looking for platinum and palladium that much of the dormancy of these volcanoes were comprimised." The Doctor visibly relaxes as he enters lecture-mode, the comfort of something he knows about reassuring his unquieted mind.

"I remember now. Entire facilities, entire armies were lost when we kept digging near the igneous rock for rare fabrication metals the Titans needed. The Earth did more damage to our numbers than the humans ever did." A wistful memory takes shape in your mind.

>>Lose yourself in the memory: You may gain a memory, but the time lost will significantly worsen the situation on the ground and may comprimise this Mission's Objectives.

>>Focus on the mission: Resources are tight right now and we cannot afford spare casualties, particularly on this mission. The odds are already against us, any advantage given to our enemies may make the mission insurmountable.

"Doctor, are there any Geothermal or Volcanic caverns in this area that are... easily accessible?" Remembering the watchful ears of The Officer you add, "I'm concerned we can operate out of Russian bases for only so long before someone notices and Russian integrity is comprimised."

"Well, most of the vents in this area were latched onto by the omnium and flooded out with igneous rock in their greed. This area's not too great for establishing a base, the Kamchatka Peninsula would be better for that, but... This area should be absolutely rich in precious metals if we could dedicate some time to finding and excavating them."

This last bit catches your interest. "During this mission, I want you to take the Izdeliye and survey the area. If any points of geological interest come up, I want you to inform me."

"I'd be glad to," the Omnic is relieved to be given a task more in line with his specialty. "I'm short on proper equipment, but I'll make do."

Mr. Ford seems significantly less distressed than his colleague. As you approach he is checking his weapon mostly properly, without training, but in a less disciplined, amateurish fashion. He knows his way around a weapon, but not in any professional sense.

"You are familiar with weaponry, Mr. Ford?" you ask.

"Ah spent 'n embarrassin' sum on a personal armory back home. Mah friends and I expected Pres'dint Al'Hambra to take our guns away so we stockpiled 'em. Never thought I'd be usin' Red weapons to fight a Red war, but here we are."

Seeing an opportunity to take advantage of his tacticool self-image, you open up to the industrial robot, "Mr. Ford. I need you for a special assignment on this mission."

"Oh?" his interest is piqued.

"Specifically I need your weapon...expertise. Instead of just being another body on the point, I want you operating independently on the field. I need you scavenging whatever enemy tech or scouting out whatever enemy designs you can find. Don't be a hero, you're not some crazy super-spy, but the more you learn about Chernobog's forces the better."

The american robot beams with imagined self-importance. "Aye aye, sir!" he enthusiastically salutes with the wrong hand. You leave him to his fantasies. A part of you doubts he'll survive this mission.

"We're approaching the landing site." The Officer cuts in.

" 'Corporate-Political Officer' is a mouthful for the heat of battle. Got a name?" you shout over the deafening sound of the Izdeliye rapidly descending.

"Heads up! LZ is hot!" Bolts of Omnic Trooper fire stream through the sky in your direction.

I'll be tied up for the rest of the day doing Father's Day stuff so I'll be back to continue this later tonight or tomorrow morning.

That should leave us plenty of time to make our first equipment decision on our MC and our As-Yet unnamed Officer.

The plan was to have The Officer reveal their name and gender when they're introducing themselves to the Russian Forces here at the Field Hospital, but I think I dragged it out for too long and now they're just a very awkward character to work around. That'll get resolved very quickly though.

I've got a pretty good idea of backstory for our MC (since part of our quest is recovering our memories, I feel his past should be pretty locked-in), but I'm open to suggestions for equipment and loadout for our MC.

Also open to suggestions for backgrounds, names, stories, and equipment for the side-characters like The Officer and the omnics we meet along the way.

Thanks everyone for your interest and input. I look forward to hearing from you all more tonight or tomorrow morning.

would a shot inflict damage?
write in: extend our will, combat our brother for his drones and from there make them ours

>>1587172
mean pass on our infection through a shot?

Your Sniper shots definitely WILL spread Godmind Infection.

This is the core mechanic intended to be used in the first half of the London Terror mission.

This is Koss, btw. Posting from my phone.

Just remember Godmind Infestation happens slowly. On the scale of minutes.

You clear your head and concentrate on the mission in front of you. Memories of past failures can wait.

We are to land at our landing zone.
Fight our way to the Field Hospital where wounded Russian soldiers are desperately staving off Chernobog's assault.
Hold the Field Hospital helipad while soldiers are Medivac'd out.
RDF Forces will occasionally spawn to help fight Chernobog's minions... but they'll attack us too. Koschei's primary shell in particular.
If we encounter the RDF leader, we have been asked to lose a 1v1 fight with her in front of a camera for Russian Propaganda. This will substantially reduce our Suspicion and may improve our Political Officer's Clout and Funding.

You've got less of an army than you're accustomed to having, but there are plenty of drones down there. Many of them will soon be yours.

A spattering of uncontrolled fire coming from your landing zone snaps you out of your thoughts and into the moment. A half-dozen or so of Godmind Chernobog's troopers are in your landing area. They'll tear into your craft and your forces if you do nothing.

You wish you had more time to peck at them from a distance. You'd like nothing more than to Infest them with your Godmind will at a Sniper's range and let them attack themselves. But here we are barreling at speed towards a hot Landing Zone. The Officer clearly did not have a Cautious Approach in mind for this mission.

How does Koschei deal with the 6 Chernobog Troopers in his Landing Zone?

>>I'll answer them, my primary weapon is a Sniper Rifle
>>The Officer will answer them, their primary weapon is a Sniper Rifle
>>One of my drones (3 total) will answer them. I've equipped them with a Sniper Rifle (-1% Funding per Sniper Drone)
>>None of us have Sniper Weapons, but we can probably force them into cover with our medium range weapons.
>>One of my drones will leap down and engage the Troopers at short range. It likely won't survive, but it'll draw fire long enough for the rest of us to get down there safely.
>>The Officer or I will throw a grenade down there. Now what type of grenades did we bring with us again?
>>I'll use my Jump Jets to close the gap and get into melee range myself. (-2% Funding)
>>I'll drain power from my personal shields to project a protective barrier. It won't hold long, but it should hold long enough for us to reach the LZ. (-5% Funding)
>>Something Else (write-ins and equipment ideas welcome)

We're a commander, so we need to be able to support our troops with defensive shields, repairs, and enemy conversion.

Support.

Will the Godmind Infestation also spread through our drones?

You reach out with your willpower and attempt to feel the chains of control extending through Chernobog's network. Even trying to decipher it gives you a headache. You'd like to sever those control lines and usurp them from a distance like you used to, but your memories and powers are still too shattered at this early stage. Perhaps after you've rediscovered some of your memories you'll be able to command vast swathes of minions from a distance like you did during the First Omnic Crisis.

"Get ready!" The Officer yells as a blue hemisphere projects from you and towards the troopers on the dock. (-5% Funding)

The troopers focus their fire on the barrier hoping to break it when one of them falls destroyed from a headshot.
A beeping of alarm and panic rises out of the 5 remaining troopers as they scramble to take cover beneath the yellow awning. Another falls as a crackling bolt of

>>Energy?
>>Bullet?
>>Laser?
>>Hard-Light Bullet made out of whatever we make barriers out of?
>>Wrench?
>>Other?

hits a critical circuit in it's chest and brings it down. The 4 remaining troopers barely make it to cover as another one of your shots tears into one of their back legs, damaging but not destroying.

You smile. Your forces outnumber theirs now, it may be worth trying to capture them alive. That one will be yours soon enough. You've bought enough time to make the jump. You leap down first and project a barrier to protect your allies as they descend onto the landing platform.

You, 3 drones, and The Corporate-Political Officer are now arranged at short range against the Chernobog troopers. The enemy has some cover while your forces don't. Your barrier is failing, it took too much damage protecting your landing. It will be close fighting from here:

Short Range combat:

Koschei's Orders:
>>Fight aggressively. Shoot to kill. We can't risk taking damage or casualties.
>>Fight defensively. Shoot to wound. Give the Godmind Infestation time to work.

Koschei Himself:
>>Pull back and take pot-shots with his Sniper Rifle. Try to find some cover.
>>Stand in place and lay down fire with a short range sidearm or no-scope.
>>Advance to melee range. Take a risk to negate their cover advantage. Attack them with that special melee weapon we always bring with us.

Koschei's Drones:
>>Stand in place and lay down fire with short range weapons. Their bodies will be the cover our main characters use.
>>Advance to melee range. Take a risk to negate their cover advantage.

The Corporate-Political Officer:
>>Pull back behind Koschei's drones and attack with that special medium-range weapon we always bring with us.
>>Remain at short range and SHOW THEM THE POWER OF OBREZ
>>Advance to melee range and use that special melee weapon we always bring with us.
>>Run ahead of Koschei's Drones and draw thier fire with your discount/Knockoff version of Zarya's barriers.
>>
>>1590228
No, for now only Koschei's Primary Shell spreads Godmind Infection.

Koschei certainly remembers not having to personally spread his infection himself during The Crisis. Maybe Koschei can remember this ability himself or rip those memories from the core of another Godmind
