"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
Following the fall of the Neumunster city of Sarsburg several weeks ago, your Employer has sent his unholy host spread throughout the entirety of the western and northern reaches of the Neumunster Nation. While the main part of the Company and the undead went west to Oxenfurt Bridge, you were tasked with the seizure of the northern town of Kresden.

You've done that. And better yet you've taken it almost entirely intact, protecting both buildings and inhabitants alike from the violence (sort of) and the unsavoury attentions of your own reinforcements (mostly). And now the whole of what's left of Northern Nuemunster stretches before you undefended. Your forces have struck out all across Northern Neumunster. Sword, fire and fang all declare the same truth. This land belongs to the Necromancer now.

But the Free Alliance is not done yet. A final roll of the dice, all their might mustered into one army on one front. Already they have battered the Wild and bloodied the nose of the Warlord. If they can break the Necromancer before winter sets in.... there may still be a Free Realm left to defend come spring. Kresden is the key, no long and drawn out siege here. This will be swift and bloody.

The Free Alliance makes ready, Neumunster Engineers digging and Elven Marksmen eyeing out good sniper positions. Meanwhile, the defenders make their own preperations. Tomorrow... the Big One begins.

(1) In the pastebin I have slightly amended the Gruesome trait so that Fear (-5DC) will kick in if you merely have more base HP than your opponent, instead of Double. Opponents with the Courage trait will ignore this. Since you’re wearing a helmet we’ll say it is in part reputation and in part appearance. Being an ugly motherfekker has its perks.

(2) For those anons complaining that they were not rewarded for not being a douchebag about the Skald axe, you kind of were. You gained 3 Skald recruits instead of having to kill 5 in an admittedly one-sided combat. I try not to make any other rewards for ‘good’ behaviour obvious, and sometimes there will be none at all. As others have mentioned, moral choices shouldn’t always have a material bonus behind them to justify it. That said, I like any feedback at all. Positive or negative, it shows me you care enough to try and improve the quest. I count that in itself as a win, I guess. So please, keep the feedback coming!

(3)This thread will go the entirety of today and the weekend. I’ll try to keep it as continuous as I can while still managing to eat, sleep and shit when necessary. I may have gotten a little carried away with the mechanics of the battle so as to include the effects of your past decisions and victories, so we may not conclude the Big One here assuming you don’t die early on.

Kresden Town, Mid-Afternoon in a run down warehouse, Day 0

”Are you sure you want to do this?” You ask the question sincerely enough. Saint has been something of a substitute for your own missing moral compass these past few months. A piece of you in truth doesn’t want her to change, but the greater part knows damn well she won’t survive if she doesn’t. ”Saint… there’s no going back from this.”

”You once told me that a ‘hero’ is someone that can keep their brothers and sisters alive. No matter the cost. That night near the ruins… I’m no good to you or the others as some half-measure. A broken thing. This way… this way I’ll make a difference.” There is no hesitation in her eyes. Only resignation. ”The time for half-measures is over, Prince. I am what I am.

Unlike before you don’t find yourself embarrassed or shamefaced to be in her presence as she sheds her armour and clothing. All the same you look away. This is not the nakedness of the body that you are watching, this is something more meaningful. Spiritual, not carnal. Each clasp is unbuckled and string undone with ritual care as Elia von-Harti, ex-Captain of the honoured Heigelen Guard, bares herself before you and Page #137. The daemonhost scrutinises this naked mortal with bland disinterest, you yourself are taken-aback from the faint whip scars on her back. Whether they are self-inflicted or a punishment for some infraction in the Heigelen you can’t tell, and now doesn’t seem to be the time to ask. Saint, Corporal of 3rd Squad of the 7th Kreigstrom, Black Company, kneels before #Page 137, her blade pointed down into the warehouse cobblestone.

With a glance the daemonhost dismisses you. An instinctive predatory reaction urges you to challenge him in Black Tongue for the power seeping from this Dark Place, an unremarkable hovel now in some way a Place of Power, but you force it down. This is his time now, a place for creatures of his ilk. For Below.

As you leave your footsteps seem to echo into the dark, the shadows snatching at the dim light offered by the scant torches. One by one they are snuffed out, CPL Saint kneeling with her hands gripping the hilt of the Moonlight Blade tight in the encroaching dark. Page #137’s all-too-deep voice rumbles as you close the door. Far too many eyes, far too many teeth.

”Let Us Begin…”

I personally don't entirely buy it. Given some of the stuff Prince has done, it's hard to argue that he isn't something approaching an evil fekker.

But is he an evil fekker for the right reasons?

It's never been about being 'good' after all.
Prince doesn't give a shite about that. It's about being strong enough to get his people through the hard times. He's a good leader,
and good leaders have to do some evil things sometimes, I guess. Certainly there is an argument there.

Kresden Manor, Late-Afternoon on the Manor Hill, Day 0

A stunning view of the sunset from the Manor Hill. A hot cuppa of Darkwood Tea in your lap. Not the usual field-ration stuff you’re used to either, this is some good shit straight from Supply, compliments of Qar-Tel. Two of your old comrades sit by your side in these ridiculously luxurious Neumunster rocking chairs. You feel old just sitting there. It’s not so bad though, as close to relaxed as you have been in a while. The massive Free Alliance army gathering in the distance does serve to dampen your spirits a tad.

” ‘Blind’ Griff gone, and now ‘Trots’ too. The Old Guard ranks are thinning, my brothers.” ‘Bad Hand’ fiddles around in his pockets as he grumbles. ”How many of our old crew is back in the mud now? 7, 8?”

”Easier to counts what’s left than what’s lost.” CPL ‘Whisper’ narrows his eyes at the bustling figures on the other side of the wall, nigh indistinguishable at this distance. ”Damien’d be rarin’ to bloody those Free Alliance noses some before they got proper settled in.”

”Heh. Don’t you pretend he’d be doing anything of the sort, ‘Whisper’.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grunts, finding what he was looking for. A smoke, half-squashed in his pouch. ”Damien would be chasing skirts around town right up until the arrows started flying.”

”Always the same line with him. ‘It might be my last night alive tonight, won’t you make it one to remember’?” You chuckle as you take a sip another sip from your cuppa Darkwood tea. Mmm, good stuff.

”Can’t believe it worked as often as it did.” ‘Whisper’ Smythe mutters.

‘Bad Hand’ lights up his smoke, inhaling deeply with a contented sigh. He notices you making an effort not to eye it longingly. Those things will kill you. He offers you another one anyway.
“Care for a smoke, brother?”

I'm not sure sure. Clearly Durvano didn't share her fears, so it's not represenative of -all- the grunts. You can love/respect someone and still fear them, especially someone in a position of authority. But a little bit of fear is natural.

After all, even ignoring all the actual unnatural shit you pull there is the matter of what you did to that insubordinate Elf guy...

“I quit those. Not about to start up that habit again.” It still irks you that Kid has started smoking at such a young age. Then again, so were you at their age. And hard drugs on top of that if you had the chance.

”Feh.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grunts at he takes a puff, but you notice his smile as he puts the pack away. You suspect part of him wanted you to turn it down.

”So… just the three of us.” You murmur wistfully. Bad Hand frowns at his smoke, unkempt moustache twitching. Whisper nods.

”Make that four.” You look up at Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova as she places a reassuring hand on your shoulder. “I still remember the old gang.”

”Four, eh? Well now, you can still play Wendelt Fives with four cards.” You grin at what is left of the old squad, the sadness inside tainting your smile a touch. ”It’s just…”

”A ‘Bad Hand’.” CPL Smythe whispers.

”A ‘Bad Hand’.” Murmurs Captain Kiranova simultaneously, wearing a ghost of a smile.

”A ‘Bad Hand’.”You finish as your faithful SGT slaps a meaty palm to his head with a groan.

I thought the idea of the terror from the elf punishment was that we demonstrated that we absolutely would tear apart our own men. For good reason, of course, but the fact that we actually would hits a deep part of them that says "this person will kill you", and that naturally leads to a fear response. All the bits that make us look like we're going down the path of an evil warrior just adds to that.

[2/3]

Kresden Town Square, Early-Evening, Day 0

Over 200 brothers and sisters in black are gathered by the time you make your way over to Annalist 'Stale'.

The Annalist held an odd rank. He had no more authority than a Sergeant, but when he spoke everyone, from grunts to Captains of every era, listened to what he had to say. He was the closest thing the Company had to a priest, the men viewed the tomes that Stale’s underfed and overworked apprentices carried around with a surprising amount of awed reverence. It was the closest any of them would get to something approaching immortality, putting their names in those pages. You don’t doubt that the Captain at least discussed the idea of the Free Alliance’s offer with Annalist Stale beforehand. You wonder whether she gave his advice more weight than yours. It wouldn’t surprise you.

In the past the Annalist had often doubled as the Company physician, but Stale had been a Ranger through and through. It made your contract with the Doc that much more valuable, you hold no doubt that the Captain would be pressing for him to take a more permanent position if the opportunity presented itself after this.

”So how many pages have I carved out for myself by now?” You grin as you approach Annalist Stale, the most senior brother in the Company now with ‘Auntie’ Goodkind gone.

”Pages?” The old man scoffs, his weathered hand grasping yours with surprising strength. ”Paragraphs, more like. And be grateful for that! Young hotshots these guys, thinking they’ll live forever…”

You bite back your rejoinder that only a decrepit relic would consider a 30-something veteran to be a young hotshot. “Don’t think many of us still harbour that assumption. Everyone sees Below one day.”

”I imagine you’re right. Though it sometimes helps to disabuse the young un’s of that notion.” Annalist Stale grumbles as the new initiates trek past in file. “We’ll talk later, Prince.”

”Of course.” You can’t help but think, watching as more than a dozen new recruits take a knee before the rest of the Company. Assuming any of us survive, that is.

Lerrek Jurgennsen, the red-haired northman already bearing the marks of a brevet-LCPL. His two Skald comrades kneel beside him, Utred Horst and Hans Rusti. Next to them sits Legless Jenny, refusing to move or be carried anywhere from her Albani Warmachine now that she can walk again. The rest you haven’t seen before, a lot of Neumunster faces in the other dozen though. With a start you recognise the Town Guard Pat Kergin taking a knee at the end of the line. You watch that last one carefully, he’d proven his loyalty to the heir before.
The Oath of Service, words you had spoken over a decade ago ringing out in the fading light once again from new throats. Uttered by new mouths, some strangers and some well known to you.
>>
>>1603061
In the elf case it came down to insubordination. Prince gave an order not to do some shit and not only did the fucker did it but he had the balls to get cheeky about it, we needed to remind them who's the bear and where does he shit in the woods.

That we destroyed the poor cunt utterly was a warning to the next guy that will try to get cute with us, and look at what Whitebitch did. Had we done a more subdued trashing down we might have more than one traitor or more trouble with our men.

Emphasis on the might.

Traditionally, the Oath is concluded with a Reading. There wasn’t a very conclusive consensus on what section should be read by the Annalist. I’ve linked in the Black Company Entries in the pastebin at the top. These days you’re one of them.

Neumunster had no official state religion, but the Orphanage would take you to the Temple occasionally. You liked it, not for the comfort promised by the priests or the holiness of the place… but for the quiet contemplation, the hushed reverence. Now this is your Temple. Like any preacher worth his Gelt, Annalist Stale speaks with solemnity and brimstone in equal measure where required. He’s a natural orator. Every Trooper’s eyes are fixed on him.
You find yourself thinking that these stories are the clue that holds this mess of cutthroats together.
The Puking Paladin, Late-Evening, Day 0
>Pelt
>Murder
>Schuster
>Spitfire ‘Spicario’

A hearty cheer greets you as the Company men see you enter, upright and in good health. You feel your eartips turn red, and there’s an odd sudden ache in your chest. Probably heartburn. Gods, you love these lads.

There are other taverns aside from the Puking Paladin in Kresden, but tonight this is a Company exclusive zone. Yellow Dogs, Kresden townsfolk and Tassenland greenhorns are encouraged to find another venue to socialise at. Ajiyimad mercs too if they weren’t so stingy about the drink anyway. The disgruntled tavern keeps and barmaids have been given a receipt for all drinks and beverages, paper money worth as much as toilet tissue to them right now. Even less should the Free Alliance retake the place. But your men aren’t complaining, judging from broken glass, spilt ale and raucous shouting they seem intent on making this a night to remember.

”Hey boss!”

You take a seat with a particularly odd assortment of Company sisters. The White-maned Grenn Trooper ‘Pelt’ sits at the end of the table with clear discomfort. At first you think it’s because of all the noise and unfamiliar smells, but then you spot the new Blackguard ‘Spitfire’ Spicario burying her face in the Wolfman’s neck.

”Heesh shoo fwufffy!!” The musketeer’s voice is muffled somewhat by the fur.

Trooper ‘Caroline’ Schuster attempts to pet the Grenn as well, but receives a deep-throated growl for her efforts. ”Fine, be that way. Fekking furcoat…” She mutters angrily into her drink. She glances up at you before taking a big gulp. ”Hmph *burp*, I got be out soon anyway. Got a hot date lined up.”

LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam watches on with vague interest as she takes measured sips from her wine. Only you notice her right hand underneath the table is fidgeting, as if she too is keen to pet the Wolfman.

You nod encouragingly at ‘Murder’. ” Go ahead, Lance-Corporal. He won’t bite”
”Not if he knows whats good for him.” You mutter, switching to a growl in Black Tongue. ”Don’t you dare bite, Pelt.” He speaks a bastardized version of the Tongue, but from the folded ears it’s clear he gets the message.

You’re not a cat person by any means. You just don’t like dogs. So it pleases you to see Trooper ‘Pelt’ put through the grinder a little. Men from some of the neighboring tables laugh as ‘Murder’ Meriam tentatively reaches out and starts to scratch him behind the ear.

‘Spitfire’ Spicario giggles, paying you absolutely no heed as he sinks both arms into the mass of fur on his back. ”Ooohhhh my gods… Joker you have to try this!”

Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster eyes the fangs of the panting Grenn warily. Things are settled between the two of them, but not to the petting-pass degree. ”Yeah, I think I’ll give it a miss.” She stands up before finishing her drink. ”Catch you girls tomorrow. And uh… you too boss.”

Trooper ‘Pelt’ clearly embarrassed by the whole affair, but his tail wags all the same.

”So-so-so-so-so fluffy. Very fluff. Much bork doggo, many good pupperino” The musketeer ‘Spitfire’ looks like she’s in heaven, slipping into what appear to be her native Sabari dialect.

‘Murder’ Meriam isn’t exactly smiling as she continues to scratch the Grenn’s ears, but she is clearly interested in the softness of his fur. Once second to ‘White Bitch’ now she is Saint’s. You decide to question her a little, since she’s never otherwise very talkative.

”So, Meriam…”

‘Pelt’ yelps at the sudden tightening of ‘Murder’s grip, but he doesn’t bite. Good boy.
”Like everything else in that fekking hole, it’s a sham.” Her face is twisted in fury, her eyes staring past you. ”Glorified ponies on wings of vultures. The most hypocritical of all the self-righteous bastards get the ‘honour’ of riding them. And I bet they ride them in more ways than one, the fekkers.”

It’s the most the Lance-Corporal has ever spoken to you. If hate itself could kill you figure Murder would be responsible for Chevalisse Genocide.

A bit more vitriol than you’re used to for disseminating information, but from the sounds of it the Chevalisse don’t have access to real life Archangels. It’s sounds like Pegasus, the winged horses of the Wild. You didn’t think anyone had actually ever tamed one, and you have no idea how they might actually perform under a wel-trained Paladin. Depending on how many they have, that’s a not-insificant challenge for aerial superiority even with Asgorga in the running.

”Okay. Let’s talk about something else.”

LCPL ‘Murder’ looks away, her hold on ‘Pelt’ relaxing. ”…Gladly.”

”Do you uh… play any instruments?” It’s a long shot but-

”I do in fact. Proud owner of an ‘Alter Ego 300’.” Her voice and face are back to careful disinterest, even as she pats the Grenn. Clearly the Chevalisse talk didn’t help.

”A 300-what now?” You’ve always been an appreciator of the classics. This sounds like newfangled

”It’s a new kind of bass instrument. Uses a new Runestonic amplifier that purrs like a kitten and hows like a Warmachine. I have to pay half my wages to Supply just to keep it insured and up-to-date on the payments." You have no idea what any of that means, but she sounds dedicated. This is the first time you've seen her express anything other than impassive disinterest or hate of the Chevalisse. "Oh, and 'Spitefire' here plays the violin."

You glance uncertainly at the giggling musketeer, still brushing her cheek against the Grenn. "Really?"

*sniiifff* Oh, that’s some good doggo right there.” Knight-of-the-Line ‘Spitfire’ Spicario looks up and breathes deeply before answering. ”Yes, sir. I was a Sabari-fekking-Palace-Guard, sir. I know how to play the violin.”

”This is great! Would the two of you be interested in joining our band?” You struggle to keep the excitement out of your voice.

The two Company sisters look at each other before ‘Spitfire’ answers. ”We kind of already are in a band, sir.”

“What… what’s the name of this band?” Your heart sinks.

”It's called ‘Saint and the Sinners’. Sir.” They say at the same time.

Kid is the main character as the class is ostensibly there to allow him to get educated. Also I think he would be the best straight-man.

He just wants to cut class and have a smoke (except for field medicine class with the Doctor). He has a Yandere ranger GF chasing him down who joined the class despite clearly being too old but IS uneducated so is surprisingly attentive.

Legless Jenny who Saint feels guilty about and tries to set up with Kid despite Jenny only having eyes for her War Machine - which she attends class in.

Page numbers is there because the Cultist-Bro thought it would be funny and bound him to the classroom. He's forced to help Cultist-bro try and woo Saint. This actually makes things worse.

Saint is the Homeroom teacher and covers history and language. She tends to ward Page to his desk when he acts up.

Asgorga was forced to attend when Saint realized he was essentially a child too. He is tsundere about not wanting to attend or obey Saint as the teacher, and competing with Kid for grades/praise.

At one point he tries to date Jenny to compete with Kid having a "girlfriend" and reasoning that bigger = better with the War Machine. That's right, Asgorga is a chubby chaser.

I had other notes about it in a previous thread.

You don’t let the hurt show. Part of you is furious at Saint going behind your back like this, starting her own band right underneath you.

”I always knew Saint would betray me… but not like this…” But really you think Clever girl. The other part of you is proud. If Saint keeps this up, she won’t be sheltering underneath your wings for much longer. She’s learning.

You don’t get blindingly drunk tonight, not enough to cause you pain in the morning anyway. After a few hours of toasts and promises of victory, glory and most importantly extra pay you make your way back to the Manor to sleep. Or try to sleep.

Full Night’s Rest +3HP

------------------------------

Okay, so things are a little more mechanical than I first thought it was going to be. But that’s only to capture the effects of some of your previous victories and future decisions. The Big One will be conducted, day by day, as follows.

Seige Day
1) State Section Strength and Roll waves. 1d3+1 (Would have been plus +2 but Asgorga’s ambush reduced that)
2) Select 3 Bag of Tricks
3) State whether Kreigstrom will reinforce a Section now, or wait until attack is underway.
4) Dragon Assault
5) Free Alliance Wave Assault Results

Order of Battle, Wave Attack
1) Select Section to Reinforce
2) Covering Fire
3) Engage (Personal and Platoon Combat as before)

Repeat until all waves are done.

Since I figure it’s best to just get straight into we will time skip and jump on in.
------------------------------------

The attack begins at the crack of dawn, but you’ve already been awake, clean-shaven and at your post for an hour before that. You’ve had a lot of time to think. About your life, about the events these last couple of weeks. The CPL Prince from a year ago would have laughed at the idea of you wearing the rank of Officer. It’s not so funny now.

---------------------------

Seige Day, (1)

Waves = 1d3+1
Note: There will be no elite forces in the first wave. Purely Neumunster Legionaries.

Northern Section (The North Tower): STALWART
North-Western Section (The North Wall): STALWART
Western Section (The Western Gate): STALWART
South-Western Section (The South Wall): STALWART

Section Strength ranges from Stalwart, Secure, Collapsing and Untenable. If a Section reaches Untenable, and you do not reinforce it, the walls are lost and fighting spills into the streets. Messier, dirtier and the numbers will quickly tell against you even with the traps in place.

Defeating a wave at a section brings it up to the max possible level of security. Losing at a section reduces the security by one, if that brings it to untenable the walls are lost.

------------------------------------

Do you wish to hold the 7th in Reserve? Reinforcing a section before attack grants a significant Platoon Bonus. First to three.

You can move between waves, but it's the same response time as placing them in reserve. So for example, you could choose to move from one Section to wherever the Hiegelen will be attacking to get the bonus. But it will remove the possibility of responding to a success of normal forces on another front.

Another example might be knowing the Elites will attack a stalwart location. You might choose to risk leaving your forces to hold them off to shore up a position in far more peril.
>Counter Daily Caster Bonus
Working with the Page daemonhosts, the Cultists cast magik-nullifying barriers across the wall. It's enough to deter the efforts of the conclave from the Isle of Mages, but not enough to stop the Archmage if he gets serious (it will drain him though).

>Add +20DC to Dragon Assault
There are wards that can make the target invisible. Although too difficult to readily pull off on a creature the size of a dragon, this halfway measure means that Asgorga is all but invisible while he circles above the battlefield.

>Reveal which Sections will come under attack by elite forces today
Scrying, subtle-possession and darker methods have been used to gain critical intelligence. When elite forces attack a section they will automatically pass their first roll to reduce the Section security.

Today
2nd Wave, North Wall, Heigelen Guard
3rd Wave, North Tower, Heigelen Guard

-------------------------

Dragon Assault
Man, if I had those Albani Warmachines now...

Asgorga is no pushover, even the Archangels aren't overly keen to tackle him in a one-to-one fight. I currently have the location of the Archangel/Marksmen ambush written down. If Asgorga attacks the enemy encampment and the Ambush is -not- located there, it is successful and Asgorga leaves after wreaking a moderate amount of damage without triggering the Ambush. If you order Asgorga to run rampant, the artillery is thwarted AND the next day's wave is reduced by 1. This however will automatically spring the Ambush.

If the Dragon Assault fails, the Neumunster Artillery permanently decreases the security of one Section.

---------------------------------

First to three.

The Cultists did their job well. You don’t even spot Asgorga until the first streak of flame lights up a bunch of tents. Important looking tents.

The enemy response is slow, maybe they hadn’t taken reports of a an actual Dragon on your side seriously. Certainly they would have expected to be able to spot him coming. You see the white wings of the Pegasus Knights swoop in as Asgorga lifts a half-erected trebuchet from the ground and throws it into an approaching column of men. You can barely hear the screeching and dying men, but you can definitely hear Asgorga’s defiant, nearly joyful, roars. This is exactly the kind of carnage he has been craving.

A streak of flame catches one of the Pegasus head-on, no amount of wards or holy protection could save anyone from a direct hit from that. The noble flying steed and its rider is virtually charcoal before it even slams into the ground. The others try to pin Asgorga to one spot as more and more crossbow bolts make their mark, but he follows your directions and doesn’t take the bait. With a gust of his mighty black wings he soars into the clouds, nearly-invisible again, as the Archangels attempt a pursuit.

As best you can tell it ends in a draw. Sort of. The vast streaks of flame throughout the Free Alliance encampment suggest that the enemy came off second best. It’s good to see that the firebreathing lizard came in handy, maybe even worth all the trouble of roping him into this in the first place.

But you’ve got more immediate things to worry about, the assault has begun.

Reading the previous thread. Everyone was so spooked about the possibility of ACTUAL Archangels.

> They still have an Archmage

I wonder if it goes well enough, if we could convince the mages to switch sides before the Necromancer gets here.

I only kind of wish we had co-ordinated to have the Vamps attack with the dragon at Night since they would have had to split their reaction force or even missed either the vamps or Asgorga
>>
>>1603831
Speaking of Archmages though, it is kinda strange they would risk sending just one at a time, and not go full blast with like three of them. Cause if one can stand a chance in a fight with the necromancer, two would wipe the floor with him. And they would have one left over to bring us to our collective knees before they even attack.

The North Wall, that's being manned by the Ajiyimad mercenaries currently. They're doing well for themselves, preventing the Neumunster from establishing much of an opening. Not one they can exploit at least. Still, gaps are appearing along the wall as men go down from crossbow bolt or blade. You're going to make sure its your lads and not Neumunster boys filling those gaps.

-------------------------

Looks like Asgorga took up all the attention of the Elven Arbalests with his attack. No one is covering for the Neumunster Legionnaries as they scramble up the ladders or hug the walls to avoid incoming missiles. They are so very exposed, bolt, arrow and sturdy rock rain down upon them. Even the Ajiyimad rifles spit death down into the crowded cohort below.
The wave of Neumunster soldiers making it to the ramparts intact becomes more of a trickle. You grin ferociously at the impending slaughter, in part bravado and in part… a little of it real.
”Right lads, follow me!”
With a roar the 7th follow your charge into melee.

The first Neumunster soldier bravely tries to throw your aim by grabbing for the pistol. You lift him up effortlessly by his neck and fling him over the ramparts. It’s a 20-something foot drop and he only has time for a surprised yelp before the lethal aspects of gravity are clearly demonstrated to him. The other two are no heroes like their unfortunate friend, they hesitate and that proves just as equally fatal. You have all the time in the world to line up the shot at the first scrambling Neumunster and open fire. To your surprise the bullet blasts straight through the unfortunate private’s skull and into the throat of the LCPL behind him. Your morbid chuckle at that little stroke of fate would be unnerving even if it wasn’t amplified by your Cloak and Blackthorn armour.

The men are pressed in so tight their bodies don’t collapse into the stone, unintentionally held up by their comrades. As they die, you’ve never felt more alive. You can sense it… their deaths powering you. The laughter of a Mad God as their life drains from this mortal plane and enter Below, sent by you. Channelled through you.

Glory to the Dark Father.

You see Trooper Belhamun go down in the melee, yourself to far back in the press to contribute. He gets back up swiftly, casting blue fireballs into the foe and cursing in his native tongue and Kid wraps his left arm up.

You have defeated your opponents, and the battle in front of you is over. Elsewhere on the wall the Kreigstrom push the Neumunster back.

>4 Discipline Damage
The Neumunster Legionaries are disciplined, but this assault was a longshot from the start. Those who don’t flee back down the ladders are quickly cut down to a man on the battlements.

Your ranged forces harry the retreating Neumunster as they withdraw, crossbow and shot pummelling into their depleted ranks. Soon enough only a scattering remain, the moaning wounded and limping trying to catch up. Some of the braver Neumunster are trying to carry their comrades out of harms way, but many more are reduced to a crawl. Most of those will be in no condition to fight in the near future, or even at all. But they’re still the enemy.

You could order your men to continue the slaughter from the wall tops. Massacre the last of these wounded soldiers. Or you could leave them be, many of the wounded will never recover in time to participate further in the siege even with impressive healers. Hell, might be a waste of ammunition on those already dying.

"Cease fire!" Your voice, amplified by the Cloak, booms over the jeers and catcalls of your forces. "This lot have had enough for today."

The remaining wounded Neumunster limp back to their lines even as your redeploy for the next attack. The 2nd Wave is already incoming. You don't pretend to entertain the idea that this means mercy will be showed to you in turn. When an enemy is forced to assault a well-defended location and succeeds it always ends in carnage for the defends. Always.

>Repel the North Tower Assault

”This is all the Heigelen have to offer? I’ve seen-“ Your heart skips a beat as you look to the North Tower, Neumunster’s tearing down the Black Company flag as a wide breach is opened up. Dead brothers and scattered bones of skeletal warriors lie everywhere. There’s fighting within the tower itself now. ”It was a distraction! Below fekking damn it, SEVENTH LADS ON ME!”

”HOH!” You and the 7th storm past struggling Heigelen and Ajiyimad alike as you press on to the Northern Tower.

”Go, Prince of Black! If the Prophet wills it we shall hold them here!” The Sabn-Ibn-Abad, the Turncoat Prince, shouts above the din of battle, his bodyguard Tofuz cutting down a Heigelen Lieutenant with his massive scimitar behind him.

”If the Prophet doesn’t will it then I fekking do!” You shout. Gods damn it, how did they manage it? If the first wave was just them skirting the edges, can your men really hope to hold back the Free Alliance in its full might? You can already hear the Neumunster chanting something. It sounds like…

”Lion! Lion! Lion!”

Who the fek is Lion?

"Son-of-a-!! That was close." 'Spitfire' Spicario breaths out as a crossbow bolts flickers through her feathered cap. She stares cross-eyed at the fresh hole in her brim angrily. "That does it! LET'S ROCK!"

Using the snarling Trooper 'Pelt' as a step the musketeer leaps into the mass of Neumunster soldiers, both pistols blazing.

You're not an impatient man. You were a wolf among sheep with the last batch of Neumunster, but you pace yourself here. Just as well, the old fellow is cautious and calculating himself. His subordinates are not so patient though, the leftmost one rushing you immediately.

You block his incoming strike with ease, child's play. With a swing of your leg you trip up their shoddy footwork and set them on the ground. Your blade sweeps up for a devastating piece of carnage.

"Liam, no!" The Neumunster Liuetenant blocks your killing blow with his own blade as the wounded Legionarre scrambles back.

The commander keeps his eyes on you at all times, his defensive stance perfect in posture. Perhaps even more so, he is clearly a skilled swordsman. "How about you try someone a bit more your size, eh daemon?"

On the North Wall your men could take apart the assaulting Neumunster easily, break apart their footholds piecemeal. That’s not the case here, the breakthrough around the North Tower is quickly becoming well established. As fast as your men cut them down more clamber over the wall. The IV Legion could already smell victory, and they are loathe to give up the chance just because of a few reinforcements.

"Bah, nothing!" Trooper Rusti shrugs off Kid's attentions and leaps back into the melee, bashing a Legionarries forehead with a solid crack of his shield. "Hvordan skal jeg komme til Valkenhiem med fleabitter som dette?!"

You’re not taken in by the Neumunster Lieutenant’s goading. His flanks are guarded by his loyal soldiers, so you need to remove them first. You go for the weakest first, ‘Liam’ he called him. The soldier with the shoddy footwork. You streak past , giving him a cursory parry as if it were an afterthought. The old man is too cautious by far, it will cost him the lives of his subordinates.

”Liam. Death Comes.” The man’s eyes widen as you slap aside his guard and rear up again for the deathblow. No officer to save him this time, your blade splits him shoulder to groin in a fountain of gore.

”Arrgh!” The other soldier charges at you, murder written across his face. You calmly pull out your Ajiyimad Pistol and shoot him point blank in the chest. The man slumps to his knees with a gurgle.

You turn back to the Lieutenant, holstering your pistol. ”Now, old man, do you still feel like facing a daemon?”

The aged warrior stares at his ruined comrades aghast, his swordhand shaking. With anger definitely, but not a little bit of fear mixed in there too. You can smell it. He grits his teeth and enters into an aggressive stance. Finally. ”You fekking bastard. No one hurts my boys.”

”I do.” Your laughter is cruel and harsh, and all the better for men dying in the midst of it.

A small part of you swears they can hear a Wildborn shout in pain and then a women crying.

Only a natural 6 can’t be countered by His Blood For Mine, you can still recover your most recent comrades. But it will cost you in the HP department.
>2 Discipline Damage Inflicted!
>1 Discipline Damage Sustained!
>LT Prince carves out 34 Damage! +1 Regen, +4 HBFM [16/25 HP]
>LT Leopold is decapitated! [-14/20HP]
>Leopold’s Lions have Lost Heart! [-30DC]
The Neumunster leader’s form is perfect, classic swordsmaster stance as he dashes at you. But form is no substitute for raw power. With ease you duck underneath a swing that would have taken the head of lesser, mortal men. Your own blade carves a gruesome gash in his chest, carving through plate like butter.
Leopold’s Lions cry out in alarm as you bring their leader to his knees. They rush forward to assist him, venting their rage on anyone Company brothers in their way. The hulking form of Trooper Twice-in-One-Day is brought crashing down in the melee, half-a-dozen blades piercing his grey skin at once. You notice Nissar go down as well, cough up blood with a sword thrust deep into his side. From the angle along you can see it is lethal.
You turn back to the kneeling old man. With a sneer you grasp his tuft of grey hair and sweep your blade through his neck, tearing it from his body. You feel the strength of the old man flow through you as you hold his severed head aloft for all to see with an inhuman roar.
----------------------------------------
You have defeated your opponents.

But yeah, you do not want to be hitting negative HP before another wave. That leaves your men to tackle it alone.

I am what I am.”

And then Kid died. Her angst will be GLORIOUS.

Fuck them. People die. How many children do they think we starved to death? The difference is that Kid was OURS and he got to die beside family instead of alone as a war orphan which is where he would have died if we hadn't picked him up.

If they want to hate someone, they can hate you because yes it was your responsibility to to keep him alive. But maybe they can do that tomorrow after you've recuperated a bit from bleeding out to save the other members of your family.

Maybe people will understand now though why we always choose Carnatour. Because when we fight safely, people die?
>>
>>1605305
And nobody cares. Congratulations.

Just to be clear, I was amongst those who voted to keep Kid around and I would do that again in a heartbeat.

As sad as Kid's death is, Forgotten will deliver a great story nonetheless. That's what really matters in the end, not pointing out fingers at each others.
>>
>>1605417

>Sacrificing 'bad hand'

>>
>>1605431
Different strokes for different people, I suppose.

Almost every character in BCQ is great, but I freely admit that the only three people I don't want to die are Prince, Bad Hand and Kiranova.
>>
>>1605469
Same here but with the addition of Pelt, Saint and Mask.
>>
Wow - woke up hungover and read the thread

War is hell
>>
>>1605417
Not only that, but the death of pretty integral characters shows that we don't have a QM that fannies about with keeping characters alive because they want to keep them in, shows we're really in a war scenario, rather than some arbitrary piece of fiction. I'm sad Kid died, but at least we're doing a quest the way it should be done.
>>
>>1605498
It's like riding a roller-coaster.

Put together by drunk frat kids, and one of them is a Kennedy, and the instructions are written in English but from India. "Please to do the needful".
>>
>>1605498
Addendum: Still better than when we lost ShadowRue.

Maybe we can imbue Kid into Saints sword instead of its current rather crap options.

Or the War Machine.

Jerek could probably catch Saints attention if he somehow swung that. Ghosts ARE a thing.
>>
>>1605566
Well, that seems like a reasonable option

Don´t we have a Souls Crystal? Why don´t we make Jerek substitute the soul on the gem with Kid´s before we find him a suitable body?

> IV Legion, ‘Leopolds Lions’ Lost Cohesion! [Bonus to Personal DC]
>Free Alliance has fled the field!

The Neumunster are no cowards, they’ve fought and held the line as well as anyone could ask for, and nearly carried the day here and now. They’ve died by the scores, and now their beloved leader is taken from them. His head held aloft by a terrifying black daemon wearing the form of a man. They break, and break hard. The ramparts become an abattoir as your forces pin those who can’t escape against the walls and slaughter them. It’s still a dangerous business though, and the enemy manages to get a few good licks in.

”Damn it! Not the fekking knee again!” CPL Hirstun of Ligh stumbles back from the melee, Trooper Godric Golden and Arlen Rivers holding him up as he clutches the wound. It’s not a lethal wound, but he’ll be out of the fight for the rest of the day.

You nod over your shoulder. ”Back of the lines, CPL. You’ve done your bit.”

”Don’t need to tell me twice. Getting too old for this shit…” The grizzled old warrior mutters. ”Jurgensen! You’re in charge. Don’t fek it up!”

” Du sorkystene er for myke!”

”Fek you!” Hirstun cals over his shoulder as he limps away.

”It is not possible.” Trooper Smiles is staring disconcertedly at his stomach, the armour there shredded but the skin underneath is unblemished. ”The odds of a blow like that not resulting in death are marginal. The odds of no wound at all is… This does not comply with rational calculations.”

Next to him another grey Wildborn, Trooper Twice-in-One-Day, lies facedown on the ramparts, his hide pierced by a dozen Neumunster blades.

”This thing… I am swear go through me! Like this!” Trooper Nissar Belhamun is rapidly trying to explain his impending demise to a confused Vendis Durvano, who stares at the supposed wound with an understandable amount skepitcism.

”Matey, you’re fine. Didn’t even break skin.” Trooper Durvano laughs with a flash of his gold tooth. ”Don’t be such a baby.”

”Thinking I am…” Trooper Belhamun looks just as perterbured at the prospect miraculous survival as he was at his imminent death. ”Ma alsihr alzalam…?”

You say nothing. In truth you were only partially aware of your powers affecting your men as the blood spilt across the stones. A mortal wound becomes a figment of a soldier’s imagination, a lethal blow turns out to have missed by inches. This is not the magik of the Mages, with rules and guidelines. This is the magik that makes no sense and follows no boundaries.

It doesn’t affect everyone, and sometimes it simply doesn’t work at all. Or not the way you want it to. But for many that makes the difference between life and death. There are still quite a few wounded around though, which leaves you wondering one thing.

You hear Corporal Saint crying before you see the limp figure laying in her arms.

The wound is horrific. The blow ripped apart their sternum. You can see the white ribs of his chest cavity splayed open, and the damage goes deeper than that. The most horrendous part is that Trooper Kid still isn’t quite dead yet, his eyes darting around in a panic as he makes this weird sucking sound that makes your stomach turn.

A small part of you rushes into thinking what kind of black deals you could make, what fell powers you’d have to convince to get Kid back. But you know the truth. Nothing stops death with a wound like that, even the Necromancer would be hard-pressed to reverse this. And the things He brings back are never the same.

Saint still tries though.

”Saint…” She ignores you, desperately trying to pull the same binding trick that saved your own life a few days ago. The dull green light working over the ruined flesh might do in a pinch, the soft tissue rolls and twists trying to reconnect. But this… there’s precious little to reconnect to, and their broken ribs are in the way of the most of it. All it’s doing is hurting Kid. ”Saint! Gods, enough! It’s… You can’t help him anymore.”

Saint gives up with a low moan, that awful sound that blurs the line between weeping and a pained groan.

Kid’s eyes fix on you as you kneel down, streaks of tears washing his bloody face. He half lifts one trembling hand, trying to signal something. You gently put it down, holding his arm. Tightly, but not harshly.

”It’s alright, Kid. I know.” You whisper to him gently. ”I know…”

Trooper Kid chokes again in tears, desperate little gasps of air for child-sized lungs torn to shreds.

Don't you see, anon? The Neumunster didn't kill Kid. You did.

>>1606029
I'm not exactly advocating a battlefield check-up, but yeah. Kid was a boy.
I mean =I think so=, determining their gender once and for all was going to be part of the char-gen in a future quest. We can leave this one down to Prince's assumption.

-----------------------------------------------------------

“Hey. Hey, hey it’s alright. Don’t cry. You did good, Kid. Good soldier, good soldier…“

It only takes a minute or so for Kid’s ragged, agonised breathing to slow to a stop, but it feels like an eternity. Your gauntlets are off, your hands slick with the boy’s blood as their chest finally ceases it’s ragged movement. Your eye looks into Kid’s as they stop flickering and eventually stare into nothingness. You could have ended it earlier, put him out of your suffering. You didn’t have the will for that, not for him.

It was less than a few months ago that you stuck your neck out for them, saving the war orphan from being torn apart by Vinehounds for entertainment. Just to die here, on the walls of some Neumunster town fighting for a cause you don’t even believe in. You haven’t cried in a long time, but you want to.

The tears don’t come.

Kid wasn't unpopular in the platoon. However, your men are used to death. All around you bodies are moved, gear is stripped and wounds are licked as they ready themselves for the 3rd Free Alliance Wave.

”Lieutenant.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ says carefully. ”We should go, the next lot of fekkers are incoming.”

You nod and look over at CPL Saint, she doesn’t move. Still shaking silently over the lad’s corpse, tears dripping freely on the 7th Platoon’s banner bearer.

”Brother!” ‘Bad Hand’ barks. ”We have to move!”

You’re not in a good place right now, but Saint is even worse off. You’ll need her if you want Kid to be the last death in the 7th today, but is she at her breaking point?

>>
>>1606242
>HOIST THE BANNER! NO MERCY

Men and women of the 7th hear me!

Our foe knows us. He fears us. But we must not underestimate him. The Free Alliance, while they cower and snipe from beneath their veneer of civility and freedom, are soulless and hollow. The enemy sees us as abominations, monsters fit only for killing. To this foe we are less than human, but we will educate them brothers and sisters. We will show them the iron and steel beneath Black Company flesh.

The path we have chosen is not an easy one. But we will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fail! Blood alone moves the wheels of history. And we will be resolute! We will fear no sacrifice and surmount every difficulty to win our just triumph!

So raise the banner high and let it never again touch the ground - onwards to victory!

>3 Success
> Saint’s Platoon bonus increases from +5 to +10. Add +1 to her casualty severity (even with re-roll).

Just to clarify, Saint still hates you –right now- but it’s the kind of hate you reserve for someone that won’t let you rest or wallow in your misery. Not the deep kind of hate that doesn’t go away.

” "There are others among the living that still need you, Saint." When she doesn’t move you pull her up forcefully, raising your voice. You need to snap her out of this. "On your feet, Corporal. On your feet! There will be time to mourn later."

The look Saint gives you as she brushes you off is filled with loathing. Good. Let her hate you, so long as it gets her up and moving. She doesn’t bother to wipe the tears from her face, but her expression is twisted in rage as she shoulders you aside. The obsidian black Nightblade is clutched tightly in her hand, at least she seems set on using it on someone other than you.

You’ve seen that kind of murderous rage before. Whether she knows it or not, the Dark Father might just have a new apprentice.

Strange energies cackle and spark from the North Tower, but you pay them no heed. The enemy ram is almost through the gates, and from atop the gatehouse the wave of Neumunster Legionaries seems endless. Already dents and holes are appearing in the gate as ram and axe attempt to chop it down. Bolts from above and through the gaps of the gate itself flit through your ranks of your 7th Kreigstrom and LT Hawk's 4th Infantry.

Most of the new people that we recruited were during the course of us being a ruthless evil bastard. They all had little to no choice but to join us after we screwed them over.

Saint? Tricked into betraying her own emperor.

Legless Jessy? Abandoned to be fodder for the abominations.

ASGORA? Mind raped into submission.

Pelt? Killed his Alpha.

That Viking? Killed his liege.

Kid was the only one that we stuck our neck out and saved out of the goodness of our shriveled, blackened heart. The one living proof that we could point to that shows that we are not yet a completely irredeemably evil.

And now he is gone.

Where the hell are we going to find another drummer?!

>LT Prince [8/25 HP]
>Enemy is exposed! (-5DC Battle Progress)

------------------------------------

Kresden may not be any great castle or stronghold, but at least the people who built this gatehouse knew what they were doing.

Posterns and Murderholes, perfect for firing directly into the crowded mass of humanity in front of the gate. The screams of those who find themselves covered in boiling oil are somewhat satisfying.

Still, the never let it be said that the Neumunster know when to quit. With grim determination you command the gate to open, much longer and their wouldn't be a gate left. Your forces sally forth, Saint leading the from the front.

CPL Saint leaps into their ranks before their own charge has had a chance to gain real momentum, for a few moments she's a one-man army as her black blade cuts through several soldiers in moments.

The leader of this Neumunster cohort looks like he was ripped straight out of a legionary recruitment poster. Rippling muscles visible even beneath the yellow cloth of his legion, he hefts a black-iron shield that looks like its need an ox to lift it with ease.

Given the untenable situation, he still gets his supporting buddies. But the Cohort doesn't get superior numbers

A swipe of your sword catches one of the other legionaries on the shoulder. A solid hit, but Neumunster Plate stops it prevents it being a lethal one. You draw your pistol and take aim at their leader. Best to finish this one quick.
To your surprise the massive black-iron shield their leader wields is thick enough to stop your bullet, or at least most of it. Shards from the corner of the shield catch the strapping warrior on his unarmoured chin. The heavy scrap metal is still there, even if there is now an obvious crater impacted in the side of it. He snorts angrily and advances with his companions.
”Insekter! Du treffer som små insekter!” Trooper Hans Rusti screams angrily as Utrid drags him back from the melee. “ Hva gjor du Utrid ?! La meg på dem!”

Meanwhile, Olly and Oliver Hasselholf fight desperately back to back as they’re cut of from the main group. Olly goes down and all you can see for a moment is his twin brother standing over him taking on all comers with desperate swings of his two-handed blade.

You hear a pained yelp in the ranks. Your pet Grenn has taken a hit, but you can’t see how bad.

”Step away from the doggo, Empire-boy.” The feathered hat of ‘Spitefire’ Spicario flickers in the melee, surrounded by several Neumunster troops. *BLAM* ”Hey, I warned him. And I’ve got two more waiting for you shits right here!”

You step aside from the leader’s reckless charge, but his allies prevent you from capitalising on that. The Private, demonstrating a surprising sense of self-preservation, leaps out of the way of your backswing. Damn it, that should have taken his head!

The other legionnaire tackles you in the side, trying to hold you still for his commander to take you down. You slam an elbow into his ribs. Once, twice, thrice. You can hear bones crack under the impact but the insanely brave soldier only yells in pain and holds on for dear life.
The towering Master-Sergeant looms over you, his trunk-like arms wrapping around your armoured form with a concerted grunt.

[3/7]
>II Legion ‘Pretorians’ has lost cohesion! (+30DC to Personal Combat)
>Prince suffered 3 damage! [3/25 HP]
>Gained Battle Buddy! CPL Saint [+10DC]

You hold your ground, even with two grown men trying to throw you into the dirt. Unholy strength pitched against the flesh and will of mortal men. Then the wounded private from before tackles your right leg from behind and you buckle. With a triumphant roar the Master-Sergeant Gregor Pretoria flings you into muddy ground, on top of you raining down blows before you can figure out which end is up.

His fists are bloody from pummelling your steel helm, but you can’t pretend like you don’t fekking feel it. They feel like a bloody Albani Blacksmith is going to town up there. You’re seeing a dozen stars when a white-haired figure wielding a black sword charges to your rescue. Saint. Their leader brings up his cast-iron shield just in time to fend of her blows, but her magik blade is quickly reducing it to scrap metal as you clamber up.

All around you are dead Neumunster bodies. Their casualties have been… horrendous. Their dead or nearly-dead outnumber yours by a factor of five, and that’s including the skeletal warriors. This assault against the West Gate has proven to be a charnel house for them.

”Sergeant! We’re being overrun!” Their leader's comrades are trying to drag him away from you and Saint as the Neumunster battle lines devolve into a disorganised mess. "We need to fall back!"

You could push for more bloodshed and try to finish this lot off now, the odds are in your favour finally. But you’ll only get one shot at it before the Chevalisse Cavalry force you off and back inside the walls. And even if the enemy is broken up and disorganized, you could still lose some men in the fighting.

There is a lot of dead and dying around you. Most wear the Neumunster colours, but too many show the black cloth of the Company. Besides, the Chevalisse cavalry are already galloping over here. No point carrying on, there’s always tomorrow.
“Another time the-“ You start before Saint interrupts with a cruel laugh.

”What’s the matter, Eagle-boy? Scared?!” Saint flits forward like a shadow in the dusk before you can hold her back.

Well, you can’t just let her take them on alone. You charge forward as well, slamming into the Corporal clutching his side.

”Hmph!” The Master-Sergeant Gregor Pretoria flares his nostrils and readies himself for her attack. ”For the Empire! For the Second!”

Saint’s blade pierces flicks out past the Neumunster leader's guard to plant itself right through his chest, down to the hilt. You hear her whisper ”For Kid.”

The wounded Corporal has got guts, trying to swing your weight around and throw you to the ground again with the other legionnaires help. Your armoured elbow didn’t suffice last time, so you bring out a hidden dagger and sink it into the same spot. Once, twice, thrice. The Corporal gives an almost tired sigh as he slams into the ground. He doesn’t get back up.

The other wounded soldier dodges your first swing, and your second. You think you finally have him after he loses his sword, but he manages to scramble out of the way of another mighty blow. Quick little bugger. Eventually you corner him, blade pointed at his chest. There’s no need to kill this one here and now. With his wounds, he’ll be out of the fight for a while. Besides you almost admire his stubborn efforts at keeping alive.

”As for you, Little Legionnaire, I have a message for your leaders.” The cowering soldier looks up at you in terror, your every word etched into his memory for the rest of his life. ”Tell them-“

*SHIK*

The legionnaire’s head rolls to your feet, neatly decapitated by Saint’s Nightblade.

”…Why did you do that?” You ask the bloody warrior.

Corporal Saint hefts the Nightblade over her shoulder and looks at you impassively for a few moments. Finally, she shrugs and wanders back through the mess of corpses towards the gate with the rest of your forces.

For a few moments it is just you left outside the gates. A lone figure in Black with a coat of Red, surrounded by the dead. The walls of Kresden behind you, the sun setting behind the far-too-late cavalry in front of you. There’s no sign of another wave forming up. Looks like the days dark work is over.

You can feel the strength of the departed seeping into you. Maybe they will go on to Below, sent there by you, maybe they will dissipate or do whatever priests are promising these days. All you know is that you’re still here. Still standing.

>Nightblade, “Eclipse”
+5DC to Platoon Combat
+10DC Black Tongue domination if Saint is in your presence.
If Prince uses any of the Call of the Night or Black Prince abilities their effects are increased.

QM said "increased", not "doubled".

To Me! Gives +40 DC to personal combat, at the "cost" of ignoring discipline damage to *both* sides. Call of the Night might keep a few more of our men alive. To Me! can turn death and defeat into victory.
>>
This is why that new skill tree pic is shit beyond looking good. Really need to make those effects clear before calling a vote.
>>
>>1607938
that's adding an extra round of platoon combat for our own personal safety
the officer skills always involve tanking casualties it annoys me honestly
that's why I have been a vehement supporter of the black guard skills
>>
>>1607938
Tbf, "increased" can mean a lot of things. For all we know, it could be tripled.

Besides, Call of the Night *does* inflict a DC malus on both personal combat and battle progression, so don't tell me it can't help Prince survive as well.

Third, Call of Night unlocks Black Prince. Saint's sword boosts both of them. Why the fek was it chosen if we won't unlock the related skills?

But go on, it's fine. I'll just remind you of it when more of our men inevitably die. Because that's what this thread wishes so much, apparently.
>>
>>1607938
But "Fear me" does 1d3 discipline damage, which could make the fights even shorter. Because with Fearsome reputation, Fear me, and Ugly Mug we do a minimum 3 discipline damage, and a max of 5 without risking lives.
And if we kill the mook we fight it gets it to min 4 max 8 damage. And with "die like mangy dogs" its min 6 with no kill, and 16 with a kill. So risking 1d3 would end most combat in the first round, rather than risking more across more than one round.
>>
>>1607904
QM when the player uses onward you dogs we get 1d3 casualties now the enemy loses nothing even though in reality throwing your men into a meat grinder should have some effect maybe they lose 1d3 platoon combat dc every use
>>
>>1607947
Correction,
> Gruesome: Inflicts Fear (-5DC) on opponents with less base HP than you. -10DC when influencing mortals to do your bidding.
does not do discipline damage, so the min goes to 2, max to 4 with out kill.
With kill min to 3 max to 7.
With "Die like mangy dogs" min to 4, max without kill to 8.
With it "Die like mangy dogs" and kill min to 6, max to 14.

>+1 Officer Skill Point
I think that’s me for today. I’ll see you lads sometime tomorrow. In the meantimes, I’ll take votes on the officer skills. Manifest Destiny is closed off to you.

(1)
Tier 3: Get Back in the Fight!
You be amazed what a stern glare and a few harsh words can do to bolster a faltering line. Your men would rather face the enemy than you anyway.
ORDER Ability: Add +1d3 Discipline. May not exceed starting discipline.

(2)
Tier 3: To Me!
Your men rally around you, pushing back your opponents as they protect their leader. You are their rock.
ORDER Ability: Next round add +40DC to Personal Combat. Ignore Discipline Damage to both sides for that round.

Also any discussion on what you’ll do before tomorrow is welcome. Obviously, you’re going to spend the evening looking over your wounded and consoling Saint. But what else will you do, what will you say to her?

Anons who still want to go after Black Prince can still vote for Get Back in the Fight! You need that one, too.

After battle:

1. Cremate/bury the dead. Console the wounded. Get medical treatment while we're at it.
2. Make sure that emergency repairs on done on the western gate.
3. Make sure the Vamps start their night patrols.
4. Sit down with Saint and tell her the story about how you rescued Kid in the first place.
5. See if our men managed to capture any Legionary Eagles. We can melt them into medals or coins or something.

As if Get Back in the Fight! stands a chance to win. Compared to the other upgrade, it's inferior in almost every way.

Not to mention that To Me! doesn't lock out Black Prince.
>>
>>1607950
I'm going to autism the rest of this out.
With "Die like mangy dogs" we risk 1d3 causiltys.
Which gives us a max of three extra deaths per round, and at a minimum three scratches.
However unless we are really unlucky we should expect one gruesome death per combat.
So with "Die like mangy dogs" we can get up to three losses, which to restore costs us at max HP nine HP to restore all of them.
And with spamming His blood for mine II we lose another six HP (I say six HP because dark debts should make it cost 5% more and im not sure its been factored into the pastebin and am planning for the worst), bring round losses down to 12 HP per combat.
But with His blood for mine II plus the pistol we get a smooth +60 to the personal combat DC.
Then with three facless mooks at 10 HP each we can restore ourselves 2 HP per mook for a max of 6 restored.
So each round of combat can cost us a min of 6 HP at no real losses, and our men just getting light wounds.
Yet it can max out at 12 HP unless there is a gruesome death among the "Die like mangy dogs" losses.
So at the personal cost of a max of 12 HP per round of combat to orders / abilitys alone we double DD dealt, and lose no men.
And with min DD dealt being 4, it would seem quite poor. However we can expect to kill some mook due to the +60 DC bringing the min to 6, closeing out most combat in a single round.

In summary the most optimal outcome with 'Fear Me' brings all combat down to a single round at the cost of six HP with no losses.
On the flip side the worst outcome brings combat down to two rounds with perma death losses being greater than 3 at the cost of 12 HP.

Fear me was the right call.

My reason for the Company of Heroes choice is that it gives me ragtag bunch of misfits that seems appealing to me. I mean, one of the things I love about this quest is the varied cast of soldiers and how each of them interact with each other trying to live life to the fullest until death comes to get them. I could be mistaken, but that sense of comradery between fellow soldiers and their boastful behavior in a bleak world is better captured by the "Company of Heroes" ending

6. Pile the corpses high and wide in front of the gate. If there are tons of flesh and steel in front of the gate no fucking battering ram is going to get at it.

7. Set someone to work on turning scrap metal and nails into caltrops, wounded unfit for battle and civilians can do this. It's fine if they don't work fast enough to have it done tomorrow but by day 3 at least we should have a good supply. Only knights and men at arms are likely to have armored boots or thick enough soles, the footmen will get fucked over by stepping on them.

8. QM, do the buildings in town have straw roofs? Heck, is there a good supply of straw in the warehouses? Make bundles of straw and stack them on the walls and soak them in oil or grease so we can set them on fire and throw them down on the enemy. They should burn enough to give their army pause at least for a while. They won't burn for long relatively speaking but it's not like they are bringing firefighters with them.
>>
>>1608114

I like these, add

9. While visiting the wounded, inquire if the doctor needs any supplies.

10. If the vamps are amenable, ask them if they see any serious damage to the walls.
>>
>>1608114
These are all things we discussed last thread that got nixed for us "not having time/materials".
>>
>>1608114
Also specifically apparently setting fire to your own defenses is bad.
>>
>>1608210
>>1608211
I don't see how a few blazes where they're setting up ladders can be considered setting fire to our own defenses. Don't tell me you think that a few straw bundles will generate enough heat to crack the brick and mortar of the town walls.

With all the corpses out there, you can't say that we don't have enough material to pile them on top of each other. You just need a dozen men to work for an hour or like, two vampires with their retard night strength.

Kresden Town, Evening in the Town Square, Day 1

You find Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien basking in a bath in the middle of the town square. You can see the steam rising from the water in his little wooden tub, legs hanging out over the side.

”What the hell is this?” You ask, looking around at the handful of Supply aides fetching hot water.

”Mm! Prince, my man!” Bad Hand laughs, kicking up soapy water as opens his eyes and leans forward as you approach. He dismisses the aide grimly scrubbing his foot with a wave. ”Qar Tel and the Supply boys owed me a couple of favours. I figured I better cash them in now while I had the chance.”

”…what the hell kind of- Nevermind. Where are we with those gate repairs, sergeant?”

”Already on it, brother.” Your comrade tries to force something out of his ear and still take a drag from his smoke. ”Repaired the damage as best we could, but now we’ve got nearly a hundred Neumunster corprses out there choking up the gateway. Stacked those fekkers up like sandbags we did, Haha!”

”Corpses? Below damn it, ‘Bad Hand’.” Corpses meant rot. Sickness, plague even. Plagues were the literal death of cities, especially those under siege. Reminded you of Far Sut Rus, not an experience you’d ever want to repeat. ”Within the week that’s going to spread disease in our own ranks.”

Your Sergeant takes another sip from his flask and raises one bushy eyebrow at you. ”After today you really think we’ve got to worry about problems a week from now?”

Fair Point. You think but don’t say. Either the Necromancer gets here within a couple of days and breaks the siege or the town falls and you’re all put to the sword anyway.

”Hold him down, Ludwig! You! Stop zis biting!” It takes four Supply orderlies to hold the yelping Grenn down as Doctor Arnulf K. Kurerfitz applies gauze to the streaks of red in the young wolfman’s white fur. ”Zere ve go… easy now. Lay him down carefully gentlemen. Very gut. Ludwig, you might want to come over here and get zis bite looked at.”

Trooper ‘Pelt’s yelping eventually gives way to subdued whining. The musketeer ‘Spitfire’ Spicario is gently patting his head, whispering the requisite ‘good boys’. Now all she needs is some snacks to make the picture complete.

The Company has its own assortment of healers, ranging from disgraced medical professional to determined stretcher-bearers and even the odd superstitious witch doctor or two. All of them are out in force tonight, saving who they can and easing the passing of those they can’t. The Doc is at the head, despite his lack of rank in the Company, every single Supply aide and Infantry corpseman listens as if he were Skarling himself. Been a while since the Company had a healer of his skill around, you don’t doubt Kiranova would pay top Gelt to keep him around after this.

You make your rounds among the wounded, same as you always do. This is your job after all, they were there for you armed and ready to risk life and limb. Now you’re here when life and limb is the price to be paid. CPL Hirstun of Ligh pats you on the shoulder and waves off the severity of his knee injury. He promises if you makes it through tomorrow he’ll help you improve one of your sword stances, and offers a few choice words on your sloppy technique. The CPL translates for his cot-partner Trooper Hans Rusti, who seems angry that the Neumunster haven’t been serious about trying to kill him. How is he supposed to get to Valkenheim with little sissy wounds like these? There follows a hard-to-translate ramble of Skaldic, but the blonde northling thumps you on the chest and gives you a cheery grin at the end of it so you suppose he’s fine.

The Doc might be a miracle worker, but even him and the team has its limits. For every brother or sister saved, or other merc or Tassenland boy, another is carried out covered in white-red sheets. At the end of the row there is a covered body smaller than the rest. And no sign of Saint.

”Herr Prince.” You turn to face Doc taking a fresh cloth from one of the young adopted girls of his. His hands are soaked in blood up well past the elbows. He does not look at you, studying his bloody hands with a frown. ”So… ze boy is dead.”

”Trooper Kid… he was killed at the North Tower. I didn’t even see the Neumunster that-“

”Killed?! Murdered I say.” The Doc’s voice raises slightly, enough for several attendees to glance your way.

You blink in surprise. You didn’t think the Doc would take it so hard, he must have connected with Kid during those lessons. ”Well, yes. War is-“

”Murdered by You, Herr Prince.” The Doc pokes a bloody finger into your chest, leaving a crimson streak down your blackthorn chestplate. ”He vas a child, vith no place on ze front lines. He vas smart, dedicated. He could haf been anysing, and you turned him into a soldier. You killed that boy, Herr Prince.”

Half the room is watching by now.

If he doesn't take that well, resort to other means.

>”Say that. Again.” [Courage]

We took Kid into the Black Company, and in doing so saved his life. Gave him a family after it had been taken away. Although we might have a crushing sense of failure and loss from his death, it wasn't our fault.

You fucking talking shit now doc

If it wasnt kid it would have been a differnt solder
Out of all here who would you pick die in his place?
>>
>>1610488
The doctor -incorrectly- assumes Kid could've had a life separate from the Black Company. That Kid was an innocent in the company of killers.

If I recall, his own son died in the war, right? I think this is mostly projection.
>>
>>1610517
Most likey he was seeing kid as his boy used to be

Mybe say that we saved him
If it wasnt for us he would have been killed ages ago

And look at this war most likey he would have died to a zombie at some point

But no it was to a himan solder and kid had no wepons (i dont know if flag/ drums count)

Doc dosnt know kids story

Ya'll pretty antagonistic towards a guy who has made no secret of his view of child-soldiers. He even trained Kid so that he wouldn't be at such a risk in the fighting.

Still upset about kid dieing

And doc chilling here like his some holey person
When he chocses who lives and dies right here in this tent.

Also what life would kid have had if we didnt get picked up and saved by us ( and not killed by red man for deamons)
Begging or robing or something eils without parents

Kid has made a mark on this world that he would naver had done befor.

Also having young boy fight isnt that what the good guys are doing as well?
Alot of there green solders a fram boys that got drafted into war without the chose

Everyone in the bc had a chose

>>

We had known Kid longer than Doc, hell we saved him back in thread 1. Doc may have his reasons to be mad and mourn the boys passing but his casual disregard towards how we are affected kinda justifies some of our disdain.
>>
>>1610803
In his defense we are a dude that gladly signed a young boy into a death company
>>
>>1610833
It's the only way we know to take care of people.
>>

We saved Kid from the cultists. It was either the company or death as entertainment. And if you can recall, Kid signed himself up.
>>
>>1610851
We enabled him to sign up, if we really cared we could have had him join the whore caravan that follows us
>>
>>1610833
Given our employer's aspirations, it is less shitty than it would otherwise seem. Not too many options and by the time Doc started training him he was already a sworn member of the Company.
>>
>>1610867
Ehh some would not be wrong to say death would of been kinder then letting him live the black company
>>
>>1610896
Not they way he was going to die and be used

He diedd fighting woth his fimaly and it ended quickly

There are many ways to die

It's takes you some time to locate CPL Saint. To your surprise, she's not alone.

----------------------

You find CPL Saint in the company of...

>...Page #136.

>...the youngest Zakashi sister.

>... the Captain.

Saint is jumping into the Company life with both feet. This choice will have ramifications not immediately obvious in the future, assuming she makes it through this battle.

>>1611063
Mauled by vinehounds vs starving/eating tainted grain vs dying in the arms of a comrade

They all suck but the last is the least shitty. Given the severity of his wound and an estimation of how long he held on to life, Kid was probably in shock and wouldn't have felt as much pain as you might expect.

Oh my.

The younger sister works too, but implied sexy times aside, I want to see where this is going. Is she trying to go over our heads and if so, what is she trying to accomplish?

Or exploit her because that's what she do. Spitfire for waifu 2017. She likes our dog.

Anyways you all just pretty much ended our relationship paths with both Saint AND the Captain so I guess there's some irony.

Well the Dice took the Captain and it's probably the multiple kids we're responsible for dying that ended Saint's.

That Emperor kid. He just wanted to go on adventures.
