It's impossible to kill a person with your eyes. Fiction. Can't be done. Seems obvious, doesn't it? Shouldn't even need to be stated because it's so ridiculous. It just doesn't work that way. Not even for witches!

For just one moment today though, I wasn't so sure about that. But now I know with absolute certainty. Because if it was possible, both Mistress and Camille would be lying on that floor there right now, stone dead. They're not though. Even standing on the sidelines, watching the exchange of looks between the two of them was one of the scariest things I've ever seen.

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who made that exchange happen too. Thankfully they seemed to be too preoccupied with each other to realize that and kept focusing entirely on each other. It's not like I did much anyway. Really, all I did was suggest that maybe they should go together. After all, this is kind of a dangerous mission what with the whole werewolf thing. Sure, for now they're just supposed to place the bait for it, but that doesn't mean it's safe so surely it would be better if they both went. But that was all it took, just one little suggestion and they both turned ice cold.

It's difficult to say who won, because not a single word was spoken, not even when they finally stopped staring each other in the eye and Camille finally went off, alone. Whether that was what she wanted or what Mistress wanted, the one thing I know for sure is that what I wanted clearly didn't matter in the end. I really wish they would've gone together though, for more than one reason. Now I'm all alone with Mistress and there is no escape.

On the brighter side of things, I finally found the first bit of family resemblance between these two. For a mother and daughter though, you'd think they'd both be a lot nicer to each other. I suppose I can understand though, since aside from being Mistress' daughter she must have also been her apprentice until not very long ago. And being Mistress' apprentice lately has definitely made me kind of annoyed with her.

And I'm pretty sure she's quite annoyed with me too.

For the moment, Mistress does not speak or even show me any regard at all. She's just staring out into the main room of the church. I try to avoid thinking about what's out there though, or looking in the general direction of it. It being the coffin with the recently deceased Baroness. But why would Mistress care so much? Did she know her or something?

Either way, that distraction isn't going to last. Mistress knows that I sort-of-borrowed-without-asking one of her broom. For flying practice, just being a good student! And I needed it to get into the church without being seen! Perfectly reasonable! But I doubt she's going to see it that way. There will definitely be trouble to be had, unless I do something about it. And I don't want to be punished again!

But what should I do?

I could just try apologizing before she can even get started. I don't really know if I think it was wrong of me to borrow-without-permission that broom, after all I was just doing what I had to and there was no time to try to find her. Or at least, not much time... Either way, at the very least an apology might lessen the blow?

Or I could go on the offensive instead. I made a ton of progress practising today and maybe if I show her that she'll realize that I totally knew what I was doing, regardless of what the scars on my arms and legs might say, and it was completely responsible and that she should actually be impressed instead of angry! That definitely sounds good in my head!

Or maybe I can try to avoid it altogether? Find something else to talk about? Definitely not Camille though. There's no way she wants to talk about her right now. No way. Maybe the obvious thing is to ask her what she thinks about the Baroness being dead. It seems to bother her, and I still don't know what to think about it myself either, so that might be nice?

With Mistress it's never easy though. Any of those could end up making her really angry or impressed. I really have no idea.

>Pre-emptive apology! If you know you can't win the fight you may as well surrender before it blows up.
>Show her my progress! Surelly she'll be impressed with my initiative and realize I was just being a good witch apprentice! Right?
>Try to distract her by asking about the Baroness and Death and stuff like that. I only have to stall for time until Camille comes back, I can do that!
>Something else? [Write-in!]

Looking at it now, that OP paste is getting to look kinda intimidating. I wonder if I could do anything about that, maybe clean it up a bit or something..?

"Hey Mistress!"

She almost jumps out of her seat as I shake her from her thoughts, perhaps a little too loudly considering we're not actually allowed to be in this church right now, but the plan now is to show initiative. Lots of initiative! I'm pre-etty sure that Mistress likes that. And now I'm betting that she likes it so much she'll even forget about the borrowing-without-permission.

For now she's looking completely speechless. That's good. Speechless is not shouting at me, so let's keep that up!

"Mistress, I wanna show you how much I taught myself today! I bet you'll be really impressed! I did really well!"

Making sure to strike while she's still caught off guard, I quickly grab the broom before she has a chance to say no and get on top of it. Suddenly I'm very happy that I crashed so many times practising because it means I have a ton of experience with taking off already. So even though we're inside, I easily manage to gently lift my feet from the ground. No stuttering or anything, real elegant-like!

"See? Super-smooth, right? Ask me anything, anything, and I'll show you that I can do it!"

She... Well she doesn't look speechless anymore, but it's difficult to tell exactly what it is that she's thinking right now. She looks me up and down, clearly judging and measuring, until suddenly a smile forms on her face.

It is not a good smile.

"Please give me a demonstration of Calissa's Gambit, 270 degrees."

...what?

"Ah, but I suppose we have very little space for that in here, don't we? Perhaps you'd prefer to show the Kempenfelt Maneuver at low velocity? That should be manageable, yes..?"

...what?

I don't understand any of those words! And she knows I don't understand any of those words too! Is she just trying to show me how stupid I am? To make me admit that I was wrong? That is it, isn't it?

..Though she's not entirely wrong, is she? There's clearly a whole lot I don't know about this. Maybe she's actually just giving me a chance to back down before it's too late? Maybe that really is the smart thing to do here?

No wait, what if she's actually trying to unnerve me, to see if I'm going to cave just because she throws fancy words at me? That could be it too! She could just be testing if I have the courage to stand up to her! But if that's not it, I might just end up being humiliated by her even more.

...Why does she always make everything harder for me? It's not fair!

>Ignore all the fancy talk that I don't understand, just show her what I DO know! ..Slowly though, because we're indoors and I totally forgot that would be a problem.
>Admit that I don't know anything about what she just said and apologize for the borrowing-without-permission. This smells too much like a trap.

Full steam ahead appears to be the order of the day. Isn't it strange how much more confident than usual Nadja is being? I wonder what's behind that...

>>1608417
>I almost feel like learning to be a witch is mostly about learning how to always pretend nothing is wrong and you know best

Heller's Theorem states that all problems can be divided into two main categories. The first includes problems whose optimal solution involves the witch appearing more competent than she is. The second includes problems whose optimal solution involves the witch appearing less competent than she is.

Nadja hasn't read that yet, but I thought it was worth noting.
>>
>>1608456
Sounds like good words to witch by. And I don't see how being less competent would help make Mistress less mad so clearly this is the right approach!
>>
>>1608398
"Nope!" I try to put on my most confident smile as I brush aside her fancy words that I don't understand anyway. "I don't understand any of all that you just said. It almost sounds like you just made it up, actually! So instead I'll just show you what I DO know and you're gonna like it!"

She tries REAL hard to look like it made any impression, but she just can't help it. Unfortunately she looks a little more amused than impressed, but at least she's still interested. That's good enough for now!

Not in this tiny room though, I'll need more space than that. Even the big room out in front is a little tight even though it can fit everyone in town inside. It'll have to be enough for this. As long as I take it slow and easy it should be fine.

"Do try not to make too much of a ruckus if you don't mind." Mistress more than a little smugly interjects as I cautiously swing through the door, careful not to go too fast and accidentally bump into the side of the door. She's trying to unnerve me again, isn't she? Well I'm not going to let her to me!

Just like how I'm not going to let that coffin over there unnerve me!

I start out nice and easy, after all I DO still need more practice and there's no point pretending I don't. For starters, just showing that I can manage my speed and height well is good enough. That did take me a lot of bruises to figure out, so it's definitely worth something. Unfortunately, just that doesn't seem to impress her one bit.

I'll have to turn up the speed! Still not nearly as fast I was going outside, but in such a cramped space it's pretty damn fast Mixing that with some tight turns around the corners of the building DO manage to put an impressed smile on her face. Honestly, those were way, way closer to the walls than I actually intended but there's no rule saying I have to admit that!

For the finish, I fly as high as the ceiling will allow me to go, turn to face directly at Mistress, and then, dive.

>-+-+-
>1/2
>-+-+-
>>
>>1608603
I didn't actually practise this, not once, but somehow I just know that this is going to work out. Even though I never intended to anything like this before. I never even thought about doing anything like this. But I feel like I should do it anyway. As if a voice inside my head was telling me this is the greatest idea ever!

She keeps up a cool face for as long as she can, even as I pick up more speed diving straight at her. Fire surges in my belly as we lock eyes and she flinches. Just one moment later and she is ducking out of the way, frightened, crying for me to slow down.

But I don't slow down. I don't need to. Instead, I swing the broom straight upward as I jump off, letting the broom continue up into the air while I land, confidently and gracefully, no more than an arms length away from where she is standing.

Or at least that was the plan. The actual landing turns out to be more of a stumble, only made even worse by the displeasing CLUNK as the broom falls to the ground a few moments later, helpless without anyone to guide its course. Still, that was fun!

I can't help myself, especially as I watch Mistress nervously brush herself off. I laugh. I laugh so much I have to hold a hand to my mouth to keep quiet and not alert the guards outside.

"Flashy." She, now calm again, evaluates at the end. "But that doesn't change that you did not have my permission to use that broom. You acted recklessly, not boldly. We'll wait to settle this until AFTER this mission is out of the way."

>Accept it. Fighting her even more on this is probably just going to anger her.
>No way! I only did what I needed to do to get inside here, and you weren't around to help so I helped myself! That's not wrong! That's good! You should praise me!

Sometimes you just can't win with Mistress! But hey, even if the punishment isn't cancelled, she was still impressed, right? That's still worth something!

>>Seal Value: 70/100

We were sealed by someone for something, the red vote didn't come until it was no longer 100% and the red text came some time after lowering it.

My guess is the insane witch queen sealed her fairy friend and made her into a changeling. Why? NO idea yet.
>>
>>1608680
It's not a bad guess when using our knowledge of key plot points so far, you might be right. Although, granted we know nearly nothing about the queen, the why and how of sealing the fairy, and then said sealed fairy becoming a random little girl in bumfuck nowhere mostly surrounded by strong witches who don't seem to like said queen much, are both things we have no real explanation for.

"..Fine. For now!" I declare with a pout worthy of my displeasure. I was awesome so it really doesn't seem fair to me at all, but it's about time to get back to work.

"I really do not need your permission to decide your punishment." Mistress declares, now every bit as aloof as she has ever been. "But I'm glad you're not going to put up any more of a fight. That is very mature of you."

"... It is?" I definitely remember other times when she thought it was a good thing that I fight her. This is so confusing.

And now she's smiling at me too! Not the bad, scheming smile like before, the one that actually looks friendly!

"You know, yours isn't the first face I've seen that look on. I'm sure it was on my face one time too. Don't worry, you'll figure it out eventually. We all did, no reason you should be any different."

Eventually? I guess that's something...

"If anything," she says as she places a hand on my shoulder, "you're turning out to be far smarter than the average apprentice."

And just like, a bright light appears, promising-

"- still getting punished though."

Aww.

"Ah, and for clarity's sake, I did not make any of those words up. Those are very real names that, now that you've apparently taken an interest in flight, you WILL be expected to learn everything about. With proper instruction this time."

Wait, so that means..?

"You'll teach me?!"

She grins.

I don't like the grin, not one bit.

She speaks.

"I'll be letting the expert handle that. You'll know when it's time."

I don't like that tone one bit! Flying is tons of fun, but she's making it sound like another punishment. Just who is the expert? I hope it's not...

"Wow, that's a lot of gloom up here! Maybe I should have stayed down there with Wolfy!"

Once again, with Camille's loud resurfacing, the air goes from a warm late Summer's night to icy cold. Camille doesn't show any regard at all for the knife-like glare Mistress gives her, and immediately grabs me by the arm and begins to pull me back upstairs. I briefly consider objecting to being dragged around like this, but at this point any excuse to get away from Mistress is welcome.

"So, great news Naddie!" She almost-yells with excitement once we're back up in Kerstin's room. The same room we just earlier tonight had a pretty nast fight in, now she suddenly has great news for me?

"Uh, aren't you going to tell me how it went with the werewolf first?"

"Right-right," she barely stops to breathe as she continues speaking. "No problems there, bait is set and everything, now we just wait. But more importantly, I have a great idea!"

I don't like HER tone either! This isn't going to go anywhere good, is it?

"So you and I both have a bit of chip with Mom, right? So, how'd you like to get back at her?"

"I uh-"

"Trust me, this is REAL good, like you wouldn't believe it until you hear it! In fact, it's so good I can't even tell you about it unless you promise you're with me to the end here. Can't risk you ratting me out!"

Is this... Is this a conspiracy?

Honesty Nadja is probably tired and sick of this whole thing. She is a small girl and they pushed her too much making this whole job way harder that it should be because those two are fighting with each other. Since she needs Nadja to finish the job, she can go and make her own pranks.
>>
>>1609033
I mean, at this point we're mostly just waiting, and honestly very little about this thread indicates Nadja is tired or notably annoyed (other than at the prospect of Mistress punishing her). She enthusiastically flew around just an update ago.
>>
>>1609045
And then got punished so she is in a bad mood. Because the whole reason she got punished is because those two keep fighting instead of working together.
>>
>>1609055
She didn't get punished yet, and as for the bad mood I don't see it. Just reading the last update she's basically just acting like a kid, getting happy when something goes well (flying lessons) or Mistress praises her and disappointed or worried when something doesn't, changing from one minute to the next. Absolutely no indication of some kinda lasting annoyance or brooding or what-have-you.

Nadja has already had way past her fair share of shenanigans for today. Seriously, time to get to work already and stop messing about!

-

Oh, and just for clarity's sake: I've seen the word 'fae' get thrown around a lot tonight, but I prefer to avoid using it. Mainly because I kinda did that thing in the early threads where I tried to play into /tg/s expectation that all fairies (or fae) are assholes just so I could later go "haha no they're not at all and you made an innocent little fairy sad by thinking so!"

Sounded a lot better in my head before I tried that out. Anyway, just you know, to remind you guys that these fairies aren't going to use your entrails to dance around a maypole or anything like that.

>>1608966
Nadja is actually a good girl. I can't be any less subtle about that I think!
>>
>>1609127
But can Good Girls lie?
>>
>>1609081
And didn't we just got told we will be punished?
>>
>>1609137
Sure, unless Nadja can change her mind, and it could still be something minor that Nadja wouldn't mind much. Why would she assume the worst and let it get her down now? That doesn't seem very Nadja-like. She might get annoyed by it when it happens but I personally don't see Nadja as someone who would dwell on some vague and probably menial job at some point in the future.
>>
>>1609153
She is annoyed because Camille keeps getting her in trouble then. There she just thinks like she is five, happy?
>>
>>1609153
The last punishment was definitely not pleasant, and getting into more trouble certainly won't help, regardless of who's the one getting pranked.
>>
>>1609172
It's obvious we just have different readings of Nadja as a character. There are several reasons why she COULD be in a bad mood at this point, both petty and justified ones. I simply don't read into the updates so far that this bad mood has actually materialized, at least in any kind of lasting way that hasn't already passed. And I also feel like from the impression of Nadja I've made up while reading through the quest that this fits her personality well enough too. This has been at its core a very happy quest and while Nadja hasn't shied away from getting angry or sad or the like when situations truly called for it, to me she seems like a character whose default state is fairly peppy and optimistic, and who wouldn't let something like some chores get her down.
>>
>>1609209
She has been thrown a lot recently and little girls are not know for being patient. Can we agree to disagree?
>>
>>1609227
Sure, arguing interpretations of a character is basically just arguing opinions anyway since there are viable arguments for either side and only the QM knows what''s going on. That said even though there's no 'right' answer especially in this particular discussion since there's not very much indication of Nadja's feelings in the update, deciding how Nadja reacts to things like these is probably gonna be the biggest impact us anons have on the direction of the tone of the quest and Nadja's character, so I expect it'll come up again in the future.

"No. I don't want to do that."

"Ah-ha!" She exclaims proudly, as if she had sprung some great and amazing trap. "So you ARE a cowar-"

"It's really late, Camille. This is a really dangerous mission and I've been working really hard to prepare for it and it feels like almost nothing I've actually done tonight has been about that mission. I even got in a ton of trouble just for trying to help with this mission. So it would be really great if maybe we could just concentrate on that mission instead? Maybe we can talk about your idea after all this is over and done with?"

Camille seems to almost visibly deflate just a little as the wind is completely taken out of her sails. "I uh.. that is.. Sorry Naddie. I just kinda wanted to try to make it up to you for, you know, that embarrassing thing earlier we shouldn't talk about anymore."

The thing where you called me a monster.

"I uh, kinda screwed that up too though, didn't I? I've been screwing up a lot of things lately.." She trails off for a moment, her eyes glancing out of the window towards.. what, exactly?

"So anyway! If that is what you want, that's what you're getting! I can be professional! At least for one night, anyway!"

I almost believe her.

"Oh and, you know, on the topic of being professional, we're probably gonna have to wait at least another hour before it's really safe to go down there. So you know, if you're feeling tired again, you could always go for another quick nap. I mean, this is all kinda huge you know, I sure never did anything this big when I was your age! So you know, nobody'd hold it against you if you did!"

I wish she wasn't so on the mark there. Even though I did catch a tiny bit of sleep earlier, we are so many hours past my bedtime on top of the last few days being so exhausting. Sure, I did stay awake all night during that crazy Initiation too, but this has been going on for so long now I just want Sunday to come already..

"There's nothing else we should be doing while waiting?" I inquire, not managing very well to hide what kind of answer I want.

"We-ell," Camille's answer is cautious, clearly having picked up on my current state. "I mean there kinda was this other thing I should probably talk to you about, since it kinda concerns you. And uhm, that is.."

She lowers her voice significantly, almost to a whisper while leaning in close. "Your sister."

"But that's not about the mission!" She continues with a happy chirp. "So you know, it can totally wait if you're not up for it right now. Totally fine by me!"

I guess a better way to phrase it is just, I don't think the argument was about which Nadja is more correct, because I think whatever we decided would be correct - just like all the voting options were very different in tone. And to me, a Nadja who's light-hearted and peppy when she can be makes for a more fun quest than a Nadja who's down and sad. I didn't feel like the situation was serious enough to warrant the latter any more, though I certainly supported it when confronting Camille for example.

So we're starting to hit that point of the night where my brain gets worryingly low on fuel. Which means it's time to say thanks for joining me tonight, and to talk the coming days.

So tomorrow is no good for me. I'd love to continue on the second day as had kind of become the almost-norm, but that's not going to happen this time. I might be able to write up the next update for sometime tomorrow though. If I do, I'll post it then.

I'd like to run at least a short session on Monday, but I honestly don't know yet if that will be possible so I can't promise it will happen. I might know more tomorrow, in which case I'll let you know more then.

I think that should cover it for now? I might be forgetting something because brainjuice, but the point is thanks for playing and hopefully expect the next update tomorrow!

I pay a lot of attention to you guy's arguments about this. For me, this is a core element of the quest. It's called Witch Apprentice Quest because it's about learning to be a witch.

While becoming an adult.

And of course, while becoming a human.

So Nadja changing her behavior and outlook is what it's all about for me. What kind of witch does she turn out to be at the end? How do her values change, how does her childish perspective evolve?

I try to read into what you guys are saying and what kind of feelings you are expressing and then use that to decide the direction Nadja moves in with regard to her development. You know, within reason.

Omake: Gossip

A giant owl landed at the top of a hill, the owl then pulled some candy from a pouch tied to his leg and ate it.

Then the giant owl became a big naked beautiful woman, one with grey hair, black eyes and scars all over her body.

She then pulled out clothes from the pouch and got dressed.

"Hey old hag, I am back!" After saying the giant woman had to avoid being hit by a boulder.

"Hey Wolf, do you want to kill me or something!"

"I had to make sure it was you, and you wouldn't die for just that, and don't call me hag!" An old yet beautiful woman said, slowly walking to meet the giant woman. Her hair was long and white and her eyes were emerald green.

"So what news do you have Owl?"

"Gossip you mean. Oh those two are stil acting like cats and dogs, and the new apprentice is interesting. Very very, catch the Mad Queen interest interesting."

"Oh? So that's were that experiment of her ended." Wolf then took a journal and started to look over it. "Where is it? Maybe is in the other one? My and my damn memory."

"Ah don't worry about it. Candy?" Owl said and offered a green candy to the older witch.

Wolf raised an eyebrow "Do you honesty think I am falling for that?"

"No, this is just candy... that might help with your bad memory."

"Might?"

"I never tested it in another witch, for bad and worse is very hard for me to forget." Upon saying that there was a barely noticeable trembling in Owl body.

Then she found that the old hag hugging her. "What are you doing?"

"You don't need to act tough with me, I know exactly the things you can't forget."

"Okay... so will you try the candy?"

"Did you made a counter agent."

"Ehehere... not yet. I mean considering how old witches always have the effect of certain magics in their bodies a general one would be a bad idea, and being specific for this one would be hard."

Wolf stopped the hug "Then stop being lazy and just do it already."

Wolf frowned, it looked kind of funny in such a big woman. "But that particular ingredient comes from fairies and-"

"Just get to it. And when will you take another apprentice? Is been decades."

"Oh when will YOU take another apprentice? Is been over a century!"

"With the way you act? I don't think it would be wise."

"I love you too."

"GUARGH!"

I wake with a start, jumping desperately for safety but only finding myself entangled in an unexpectedly uncooperative bunch of sheets. But even as I find myself completely blinded by the linen snare, I can still feel it. It's there! It's evil! And it's staring at me!

"Uhh... You okay there, Naddie?" A dumbstruck Camille asks from somewhere beyond the sheets that are proving incredibly resistant to my panicked flailing.

"MAKE IT GO AWAY!"

"Uh right," she affirms and begins to pull at the web of sheets, "I'll make the mean bed go away.."

"NO! NOT THE-"

As soon as the first obstacle is removed and a brief head first collision with Camille's chest, a much more rigid obstacle presents itself. I push myself as far against the wall as I possibly could, but it is no help. As I turn around it is still right there, staring at me!

"Hey..?" She grabs me by the shoulders. Bad. No escape. Bad-bad-bad! "Can you tell me what's wrong?"

Her head is in the way now. Can't see it now, but it's still there. Bad!

She holds me closer. Puts her head close to mine, whispering into my ear. "Easy. You're safe."

I'm not safe. I see it again. It's right there, lying on the same bed I was lying on just a moment ago. It's bad and it's evil and it wants to get me!

"S-s-s-" I try to tell her. Voice is failing. Heart is pounding. Head is pounding. Room is pounding.

A hand strokes the back of my head. I shake it off. I point. She looks. She sees. She makes it go away.

It's gone.

"Yikes!" She says in a joking tone as she returns to the room. "Didn't know you were that much of a pacifist."

I smile. Just a little. She's not being mean, she's just being stupid. Still stupid. She sits next to me. She puts one arm around my shoulders and wipes the tears away from my face.

... I cried? I must have.

"Hey don't worry, okay? The sword is gone now, packed far away. It can't get you."

She doesn't get it. That's not how swords work.

"Plus, on the bright side, you're wide awake now and just in time!"

"Mih-mission?" I just barely manage to stammer the word out before it's drowned in sniffles.

"That's right!" She chirps before lifting me off the floor with surprising ease - she's not even much bigger than I am! - and carries me back to the side of the bed. "But not before we've got you geared up nice and good!"

She cheerfully presents a long list of dangerous-looking and probably-magical items neatly placed on a rolled out blanket and sorted according to some unknown criteria. No swords, though. The sword is gone.

"Do.. do we really need all this?" I can't help feeling a little overwhelmed. I see potions and wands, those are familiar even if I don't know these specific ones. But what are these little round pearl-thingies for? And is that some kind of green powder in those pouches? What IS all this?

"Better safe than sorry, right?" She replies, seeming all too happy about the inventory laid out in front of us. "Not that I don't trust your poison or anything like that! But just in case anything unexpected happens, we'd better make sure we're the dangerous ones!"

"..Both of us?"

"Damn straight! Do you have any idea what'll happen to me if anything happens to me? Not taking any chances there! So take your pick!"

>>1621206
She gives me a quick walkthrough of the items present. Nothing very specific and a lot of it flies right over my head. If I understand correctly they're all grouped after their intended use. The general gist seems to be.

- Offence. This is the aggressive batch that seems to be all about causing pain. I recognize the fire potions that were also in Cinnamon's "emergency pack" but the rest is unfamiliar. There's also a bunch of wands in what looks like a specially made bandolier for the purpose. I lost track along the way, but they apparently all shoot different kinds of nastiness at whatever you point them at. Camille ensures me that at worst they'll just stun the werewolf or slow it down enough to make an escape.

- Distraction. The strange pearl-like things belong here. Apparently when you throw them hard enough they break into even smaller balls and they light up and that's supposed to confuse the werewolf. Apparently they light up so much you can barely see? I also recognize another potion that was in Cinnamon's pack. The ones that make lots of smoke, great for hiding and such. Another potion Camille gleefully describes as a "stink bomb." Intended application obvious.

- Protection. Really odd, this one. Apparently magic doesn't offer quite as wide a range of options when it comes to things like not getting hurt. The lonely star of the show is just a big stick, a little longer than myself. Camille says it's called a staff, not a stick, but I'm not sure what the difference is. It's not as spectacular as the others. All it does is "not break." You're supposed to put it between yourself and anything that wants to do nasty things to you and no matter what it is or how sharp it is, the staff won't break. Sounds a little difficult to use, but as long as I'm paying attention I should be pretty safe with it.

She won't let me pick more than one because "it's good to be versatile but it's not your own stuff so don't know it at heart and you'd just end up confusing yourself and hesitating at a bad time." But to make up for it she says that whichever I pick I can keep even after the mission to "help get my own inventory started."

But which should I choose?

>The offensive items. If things get dangerous it's best to have the strongest weapons ready.
>Distraction! Clearly the best way to go in an emergency is to make sure the danger is as far from you as possible.
>The sti- staff could be good to have, even after the mission. If you're quick and paying attention you should be safe from anything!

>The Staff.

Always was more of a fan of staves. Wands always seemed too fragile, and you can use a staff on long walks to support yourself, or hang a bundle on them and be a hobo.

GM Nadja being scared of that sword really came out the left field. Is the stupid seal isn't it? Fear of forged/cold iron/steel or something, right?

Of course they know too much, they are witches! And our dear MC is very eye catching.

I'd prefer offense, but that has no votes. I really like the idea of Sis teaching us how to actually use our unbreakable staff.
>>
>>1621208
"I think.. I'd rather have the staff?"

"Oh? You sure about that?" Camille asks with a playful twirl in her voice.

I don't answer. She already knows that I'm not. But unlike her mother, I don't feel like she's judging me. More like she's just enjoys watching my uncertainty.

"Honestly," she pauses to pick the staff from the floor, "I never thought you'd actually pick this one."

"You think I chose wrong?" I cannot help asking with my already uncertain decision being put into question.

"No idea." She states more than a little bluntly. "It's not my job to test you, so there's no trap options designed to show you how stupid you are followed by a tedious lecture about responsibility, cautiousness, and so on and so on..."

She's not even pretending to disguise who she's talking about. I understand how she feels, but I don't think it's a good idea to be saying that aloud..

"What you did choose though, was by far the most expensive choice for me. So in that way, you definitely chose right!" She says with a laugh, reassuring me that she's not angry about the expense.

"Look," she holds the staff out for me to see, but doesn't quite place it in my hands. "At first glance it's no different from any other staff but if you look very closely..."

I see it. From a distance the staff looks smooth and polished. Up close however it becomes clear. Across the length of the staff are carved hundreds of symbols, so delicate their full detail is only visible when holding the staff all the way up to your head. Even then, I recognize none of them. They're not the same as the ones I've been learning to write for the magic circles used in hexes. Which means I'll have to learn these too one day...

"Does it mean anything?" I ask, silently hoping that the symbols are only decorative so I don't have to learn yet another dead language.

"It does..." She answers with a slight waver in her voice. "It's just... Well, to be quite honest I have no idea how to translate it."

"You don't understand it yourself?!"

"No no, I do but.." She pauses, lost for words. "I just don't know how to express it. It's very different from human languages. You'll know what I mean when you learn it too."

Sounds like that's going to be even harder than hexes...

"Yeah I know exactly what you're thinking right now." Her strained grimace carries the pain of the many long hours that await me. No more than a moment later she breaks into a cheerful smile. "Look at the bright side though, if I could learn then so can you!"

Is there any part of being a witch that's easy?

"This one took me about three weeks to finish." She explains as she finally puts the staff in my hands. "The others are just potions and such, if you know how and have all the ingredients then you can make them in just a few hours."

The staff is a lot lighter than I expected. I don't know woodcraft, but it must be made of a particularly light type of wood. I suppose that makes sense if it has been given magic to keep it sturdy. And it definitely is sturdy, despite the weight, just as it feels smooth to the touch despite the carvings in its surface.

"So uhm, if it took you so long to make..." It occurs to me that it may be smarter to not ask what I'm about to. But still, I do ask. "Why are you just giving it to me? For free?"

"Oh, it's not a big deal for me. I don't use it at all anymore." Her casual tone matches the statement. "Of course, ideally you shouldn't either. At least that's what she would say."

"The only weapon a witch needs is her wits." Camille recites with a mocking tone. "There is no blade sharper."

It's not difficult to guess whose words she is repeating. Or what she thinks of that sentiment.

"Of course in your case it's not a blade at all, but I'd still say you're safer with it than without it. Plus, if you're even a little like your sister, well..."

"Eh? You know Sis too? Does she know everybody?!"

She promptly ignores my question.

"So how do you want to do this? Wolfy should be knocked out, but we don't for sure until we find it, so we'll need to be on guard at all times. So do you want to watch my back? Or should I be watching yours while you lead?"

"Couldn't you-"

I don't even get a chance to finish the question. "It'll be light soon, so no, 'fraid we don't have time for me to make sure the area is clear on my own. You're coming."

Front or rear. Both sound dangerous. From the front the danger is obvious, and probably more likely. But the one in the back would have to be looking out to make sure the werewolf doesn't sneak up on us. That might be even more difficult...

"Wait, what about Mis-"

"Oh she uh.. Yeah she left."

"Mistress left?"

"Mhm! Yep! I guess she finally realized we've got this perfectly under control already!"

"She... just left? She's not secretly planning yet another test? Not going to suddenly jump out while we're down there and make me fight for my life? Anything like that?"

Again, Camille doesn't answer my question. "So, what do you want to do?"

>If I'm going to be in danger, I guess the danger you can see is better. Especially if Mistress could be one of them. I'll be in front.
>The one in front is obviously in more danger! I'll stay in the back and keep an eye out so the werewolf - or Mistress - don't catch us by surprise.

xWell is gonna be ages until movies get invented, so I guess?x

*Don't be silly Mistress, motion pictures not done by magic? That's nosence!*

AN: Just a witch and her familiar watching over a dead copse to prevent wizards tampering, nothing interesting, just move on...

Fun history fact:

Movies did in fact exist in the Age of Magic! It was an incredibly efficient way to entertain large crowds; A single slave-witch could provide entertainment for a hundred citizens or more. The only materials you needed were a scaled-up Dream Mirror, a set of high-capacity (important!) restraints, and a steady supply of Azurium Dust. That, and you'd have to replace the witch every few years, since eventually reliving the same dreams too many times made them "unreliable".

Fortunately, there was a, albeit somewhat more niche, audience for that too. And if not, you could always sell them to the military. Unreliable as they may be, you could generally expect at least a few dozen faces to be separated from their owners before they'd expire.

Nowadays you'll have to find a storyteller or learn to read if want a story.

Hence why [*Don't be silly Mistress, motion pictures not done by magic? That's nosence!*]

The term movies is modern, motion pictures is the old one. Hence why the familiar things doing a "movie" aka not using magic for it is silly.

Sounds like current Friendworld sucks! Go back to the good old days!

Is possible to create a motion picture using a few witches and illusions. Sadly is quite a lot of hard work so is only done for important stuff, like showing past events they should know to new witches. If you want entertainment just go to watch a theather play. Creating elaborate illusions to narrate a story is quite troublesome.

If you feel that way, make sure to remember to ask Redwing for some stories from the Old World next time she makes an appearance. Because if you're really up for it, I could probably cook up a flashback sequence to really dive into the stupidly edgy past.

Or we can just leave it in the past and stay in what is by far the most comfortable time period this setting has ever experienced. Your choice!

Oh boy, flashbacks!
Although, no offense, I don't think I'd want to lose a rare thread to that.

We can show our dear not a fairy MC the traumatic past when she becomes a real witch. For now we have a werewolf to dealt with.

xThat's it I am creating comic books!x

*Mistress you can't draw very well*

xFine, I am doing shadow puppets then and by that I mean the paper ones. Cause literal shadow puppets would be really hard.x

*Mistress maybe you should stop focusing so much on those weird things and get better at magic.*

xFine I will write runes to move the shadow puppets!×
