“Did you know that another word for kitchen maid in the mid-15th century was ‘slut’?” Kururi raises a finger, “In a way, it could be called a ‘slut café’.”

“Wow,” you loudly cough, “I don’t think that’s something you should say out loud.” Cautiously, you eye the maid café room behind you, wondering if Usagi, Kaori, or anyone else heard that.

“Maybe, maybe not, who’s to say?” she says, giving you a sly smile as she walks down the busy school hallway. Her hair hangs down, hiding an eye. “Sorry for being late.”

“It’s nothing,” you say. You two walk down halls, surrounded by a hushed din of murmurs and mild excitement. “You know, it bothers me.”

“Hmm?”

“The festival lasts for a whole week, and it takes on the weekdays. As if I’m taking a break right after the year just started.”

“Ah?” Kururi thoughtfully stares off, “I don’t think that way. Two days for us, two for Nishishio high, and one for the both of us. Fair, isn’t it?”

“I feel like there’ll be all too many problems involved...”

She speeds up and turns around, stopping in front of you. “That’s the small details. How scary, you remind me of me,” she says, “I thought—just for today—we’d forget our problems?”

You probably have more of them on your hands then you can count.

”Even if I promise that, it’ just impossible,” you wave the idea away, “You can’t just forget something that.”

“Sure you can,” she says, “What’s the problem? Your front door’s attached again, and you can move. If a complete stranger were to look right now, they wouldn’t think anything of it, so why should we think anything of it?”

“You... is it even okay for you to say that?”

“If anything, I should be the one allowed to say that!” Kururi says. “Now, let’s go! There’s no time to waste, lest the splendor of youth passes us by!”

Besides the fact that you can’t feel your body, every movement feels as if it’s accompanied by a heavy weight. Surely your future rolls will be crippled by this unfortunate development, whatever this means!

Still, you’re here at school with Kururi, because obligations has elevated your status to “bodyguard.”

“What are you doing...?” you say, seeing Kururi take out shades and a paper filter mask.

“What if someone sees me?” she replies, “I’m sure at least two people aren’t happy with me skipping my responsibilities. So, where to?”

No fun allowed.

You sigh.

...You can take it easy for a bit, right?

“Let’s just walk around and see what’s interesting,” you say, “Also, anyone can tell who you are a mile away.” You motion toward her “disguise.”

“Really?” she says, “I think it helps.”

“...Anyways, I want to go to the Student Council room later.”

Tetsuyashi Academy of the Psionic Arts, as per standard, is a three-year school, the size of each grade dependent on the number of applicants that make it in. The second-years, rocking a grand total of four full classes, is the largest, followed by the third-years, and then the freshmen.

You’re not sure how Nishishio High works, or how they were even selected to win a free trip to a city a whole lot of them would rather destroy, but then again, it’s not like you bothered enough to find out in the first place.

You contemplate this while you pass by the tea ceremony club, doing your very best to not accomplish the grand feat of falling asleep while walking.

“Psst, hey you,” a voice whispers suddenly, “Do you want to see your future?”

You turn around to see a hooded figure sticking out of a room.

“Is it a future where I have to pay you money to hear it?”

The figure pauses, “For only a small price.”

“...Nah,” you say, starting to walk away.

“You cheapskate!” she says, and when you don’t stop, she continues, “Hey, don’t you ignore me! Damn it, fine, I’ll give you a discount. 99% off, how’s that?!”

There’s some murmurs behind her, ones of disagreement and outrage.

Kururi walks up to beside you, “What’s this?”

“I think the Occult Club is doing some fortune telling. You want to try it out? We have a 99% discount.”

There’s some cries of anguish as Kururi replies, “Sure. Why not?”

A dimly lit room awaits you, the walls hidden by drapes of purple cloth that surround the center of the room with a spooky aura. A table accompanied by three chairs await with a large, loose fabric drapes over it, and atop that is a crystal ball.

You say to Kururi, “What’s the point of the Occult when magic exists?”

The figure and her unwanted solicitations gestures, “Please, sit down.”

“Telling the future?” Kururi wonders.

“Yeah, you’re right,” she says, “But if you think about it, the occult is just a category of magic.”

You pause. “You seem... familiar...”

She completely ignores you. “Have you heard of Laplace’s demon?”

Kururi speaks up, “Oh, I know this. It’s the idea that if someone knew the location and momentum of each atom in the universe, they would be able to predict the future with absolutely certainty.”

“Yes... precisely! And even without knowing every atom in the universe, just seeing the ones that are around you is good enough. The farther the demon can see, the more accurate it will become!” the girl says, “Behold, my secret move, Laplace’s Imp!”

Rolled 666 = 666 (1d20)

You cup your face. She reminds you of Yamikigo... maybe they’d get along.

The girl’s hands hover over the orb, and it glows a brilliant blue. As the shimmering lights inside glow and die by the second, you can’t help but look in awe.

“Kururi Kururu,” she says, “I see... in your future... the past will return once more...”

Kururi replies, “Can... can you be a little more specific...?”

“I see... the shattering of a stone, rekindling of a lost connection...”

“I... I don’t know what to say...”

You shake your head, unable to tell whether this is fortune cookie tier or ridiculous spoilers.

“And you, Katsuya Nekoyo... I see... absolute crushing defeat! Oh my gods, this is just embarrassing to watch, how terrible! I’ve never seen someone lose so hard before. This is just...” she shakes her head, “I’m sorry, Nekoyo, but I highly recommend pulling out from the Festival matches immediately. It’s the only way to prevent this horrifying future.”

You stare blankly in return.

“Wait a moment...!” you stand up. Without warning, you throw the hood off of her head.

In front of you is an all-too familiar short haired girl.

“H-hey!” she stammers, “That’s a bit rude.”

“...Who are you?”

“We fought yesterday!” Denkiko Mita hits the table, “O-oh I mean, who knows?”

There’s some muffled shouting behind the curtains, as if someone was being held back from leaping out scathing with anger.

Kururi asks, “...That was a fake fortune, wasn’t it? Was mine fake too? I need to know!”

Mita shakes her head, “Why would I lie to you? Yours is 100% real, even if I couldn’t see much.”

“And that means mine is fake after all! What did you see exactly?” you say, “No wait, better yet, what are you doing here!?”

“I thought I could make a quick buck,” she whistles.

“W-wait!” Kururi says, ‘Could you try to see into my future again? I just want to know... if everything would be okay?”

“You know, if you know the future, wouldn’t that mean you’ll only end up changing it?” you say, “How did you lose to me if you could've just predicted how our battle would play out?”

“W-well I mean, I explained it, didn’t I? Even I have limits with how far I can see. Just, shut up!”

“Wow, you heard that, Kururi?” you shake your head, “Not only is she rude, but her fortune telling is no good too. What terrible customer service. Let’s get out of here.”

“Katsuya...” Kururi says. She blinks, as if snapping out of it. “You’re right, I don’t know what came over me.” She gets up, leaves money on the table, and walks out with you.

“Since she didn’t read my fortune, I don’t have to pay, right?”

She smirks, “I guess not.”

As you walk away, you feel Mita stare a hole into your back, a feeling that is promptly ended after who’s probably the Occult Club president leaping out the curtains to cry about their “help.”

Without even thinking about it, you two ended up walking to the Student Council room.

Kururi says, “We better just get this out of the way, or it’ll bother me the entire day.”

“Right...” you trail off. You knock on the door twice, “Hello? Anyone in there?”

A new voice comes out. “Come in.”

You open the door, finding only a single person—a bespectacled girl with a large braid draped over her right shoulder. She’s a third-year.

“Is Rin here?” you say, “I need to talk to him about something.”

The upperclassman replies, “He’s busy. What is it?”

You whisper to Kururi, “I’ll leave it to you, thanks!”

“W-wait!” she says right before she’s gently pushed through the doorway. She exchanges glances with you, then the girl inside the room, the one who wears an armband that says “Student Council - Secretary”. Kururi opens her mouth, “H-hi, I’m Kururi Kururu, and this is Katsuya Nekoyo...”

“I’m aware,” the Student Council Secretary replies. “My name is Chiwa Fujisaki, secretary and treasurer.”

“Ah, so, uh,” Kururi stumbles. The story pours out of her mouth like word vomit, uncontrollable and altogether unpleasant, pieces of a mediocre 99 cent jigsaw puzzle slowly slapped together, pieces that you didn’t even know were there.

Instead of recalling her account word for word, your brain has performed the heavenly task of filtering out the following:

1. Itsumo (apparently that masked girl?) is gone, and Kururi would like to know where she is.
2. Kururi’s being attacked by Minamiyaman monks. It’d be great if someone could do something.
3. You would like to know what is going on, thank you very much. Okay, this one is mostly you.

Fujisaki slowly shuts her eyes, her sharp, painful stare gone for only a moment. “...I recommend the police.”

You say, “I was told to report to Rin?”

“That boy...” she sighs, “Would you like to set up an appointment with President Minezaki? With Vice Pres Houko? If you want something with the police, you should talk to him. Or should I drag Rin here? Or do you want me to do something?”

You think for a moment.

“Ah, then Houko,” Kururi replies.

“Sounds good,” you affirm.

Fujisaki says, “Thursday, 11:00AM, he should be free. You should find him in this room.”

“In two days, hm?” you mumble.

“You do have a match tomorrow, don’t you?” the secretary asks, “Good luck, Nekoyo.”

You stop for a moment.

You think, and—

“Good luck in your match too, Fujisaki,” you say.

Isn’t she Captain of the Kendo Club? No way, she doesn’t swing a wooden sword around like a katana like Rin, does she...?

You briefly contemplate the second-year middle school syndrome plague that has apparently taken over the school.

Stepping outside, you see Kururi visibly letting out a sigh of relief.

She blinks. “Hey Katsuya... we barely know anything about each other.”

“Is that right...?" you say as she looks at you.

“You seem fine with it,” you say.

“Ahah...” she softly laughs, “ I guess I have. I’ve been... preoccupied?”

“I bet. So what’s with the change of heart?”

Kururi only smiles, shooing away your question. “Have you ever been to Minamiyama?”

“Can’t say I have,” you say, “Though I have seen a bit of Nishishio.”

“I think,” she thoughtfully looks off to the side, “everyone should see it at least once. When you stand on a flimsy, wooden balcony on sheer cliff, you really appreciate life.”

You smile, “Speaking from experience?”

“And when you look out into sides of the mountains cutting through the clouds, down the twisting, jagged valleys, it makes you want to climb it yourself,” Kururi says, “And one day, I thought, ‘I’m going to do it.’”

“Did you?”

She laughs, “No. Do I look like someone who can do that?”

“Oh right, you got tired just from running from the nurse’s office to the practice chambers.”

“Hush,” she says, “Anyways, it’s a shame the rest of the city-state isn’t as pretty as within the mountain range.”

“You’ve heard about the Nagareboshi, haven’t you?”

“Yeah?”

“Every year, on July 7, the Star Festival is held, and in the center of it is the Nagareboshi. They say if you win it, show that your determination and strength is above all, then a single wish could be granted,” she says, “A wish for anything. To be rich, famous, to have your love brought back to life, anything. The stories reached past even the mountains, even to me.”

She suddenly stops in the middle of the walkway, the leaves on the trees behind her shaking in the wind.

Years ago...

A wooden, roofed deck oversees a twisting ravine, and from it you can see the cloudy skies, the sheer cliffs that cut through it, and the streams of water that split rock and earth.

You stand there, a broom in your hands, watching as the world moves on without you.

“Kururi!” a voice catches your attention.

You spin around to see a familiar face. “Hi... Itsumo.”

“Whatcha doin’?” she says.

“Sweeping.”

“Aw, come on, let’s play instead!” the girl walks up to you, grabbing your hands.

“I’ll get in trouble...” you say. You see something. A bruise. “Did you get in a fight again?”

You quietly say, ”You shouldn’t get in trouble like that... especially for my sake.”

“I did it because I wanted to, got it?” Itsumo huffs.

You stare at the floor, giving the very clean spot another few unneeded sweeps. “...Did you win?”

“Did I... of course I won. Who do you think I am?!”

You meekly smile. “Then, if you’re okay.”

The girl tugs at your sleeve. “Let’s go do something fun already. This is boring.”

You refuse to budge. “No, isn’t your ordination today? A-and... I don’t want them yelling at you again.”

She puffs up her cheeks. “I’m going to pass it, easy, and I still have time.”

”What are you thinking of?”

“I wanna... sneak into the caverns!”

“...W-what? Why?”

“I don’t wanna wait for my rites, I wanna see it now,” she says, “It’ll be just a quick peek, come on.”

“I-I don’t think that’s a good idea...” you say, but you’re pulled along anyways.

Carved into the mountains are rooms and passageways, a solitary proof of civilization that sticks out of the cliffsides, defying gravity. You and Itsumo slip through the halls, your bare feet hitting the wood floor. The occasional person gives you two a curious look, but no one does anything. The only ones that manages to see are servants and retainers, people with nothing to prove.

“N-No! I don’t hate you at all!” you shake your head, “Never mind...”

The girl gives you a big smile, and pulls you along.

Eventually you stop at a balcony somewhere on the edge of the monastery. Itsumo peeks over to the side, scanning the side of the mountain off to the side.

She says, “There’s a tunnel here that goes into the caverns.”

Carefully, she climbs onto the railing, skips onto a platform of her psi, and quickly jumps off onto safety. She hails you over.

You glance at her nervously. When you see the girl looking at you expectantly, you follow suit. After landing safely, you look up to see Itsumo already running inside.

You shouldn’t be here. You have no right to be here.

You’re just another nobody, your lineage conquered and absorbed into the Fuyaku clan like countless others.

You shouldn’t walk through these tunnels and certainly not see what’s inside.

But... Itsumo’s waiting...

You stand there, frozen, until the fear of trouble overwhelms the fear of your only friend getting mad at you.

You can’t do it, you just don’t have it in you...

Turning around, you freeze at the sound of voices.

“Where did they go?”
“Itsumo’s with that dirty servant again, I’m telling on her.”
“I can’t believe she’s related to me...”
“Hey, I think I see something over there...”

There’s... two, no, three of them?

Sounds of shuffling alerts you, and when you realize they’re coming to you, you back up.

Frantically, you search around for another way out, stumbling until you find a large crevice, hidden in the shadows.

You hide yourself, careful not to make a sound.

“This... leads to...”
“Oh, she’s in trouble now.”

You hear them pass by.

You...

You need to find Itsumo before them.

Carefully, you glimpse out, trying to see if anyone is still there. When you find that the way is clear, you quickly move.

Rock twists off into different two directions, one smaller than the other. You remember Itsumo heading toward one, and the others going down the same way.

You don’t have a choice. If you go down the same path, you’ll never reach her time. So, you take the other route. Your hands trembling, you lightly touch the walls as you make your way onward. You lightly reach out with your psi, trying to probe for any danger while leaving behind a trail in the event you get lost.

A faint voice reaches you.

“Kururi... where... go? ...ran away?”

Your heart skips a beat, and you hurry—only to trip and fall. Your sleeve tears, and you try to calm down as your surroundings catch your attention.

Veins of glowing blue run through the walls of the tunnels, illuminating the way with an ephemeral glow. Gemstones jut out of rock every so often, shimmering with light if it had a pulse.

Your heart beats faster.

Your hand goes over to the gemstones, but then you stop.

You search around, and without much trouble you find—

“Who is it?” Itsumo says, “Oh, it’s just you, Kururi!”

You say, “Itsumo, w-we have to get of here! People are coming.”

“What? Why?”

“I think we were followed, so we need to run! They’re coming.”

“...Okay. Then, do you know a way out?”

You nod, “I left a trail...”

A long line of scorch marks goes from underneath your feet back to where you came from.

Itsumo looks at you in shock, “How did you...? These are psi burns...”

“...Um...”

“I thought, wait, wha—“ she says, “You’re... you’re a Fuyaku?”

She takes a step back from you, shaking her head.

Itsumo says, ”They... weren’t lying?
>”W-what are you talking about?”

”W-what are you talking about?”

“Your psi...” Itsumo says, “Your psi signature... why is it like ours!?”

You muster an ounce of courage. “What... whatever it is, tell me later, we need to leave now!"

“No...! I’m not, I’m not going with you!” she says, backing away. “You’re... you’re not trying to destroy the clan, are you?”

You stand there, shocked. “W-why would... why would I do something like that? I wouldn’t—”

“LIAR!” Itsumo screams, “Your signature, it’s proof. You... you snake!” And with that, she runs off.

You’re... a snake?

Why?

You feel your eyes water. You haven’t... done anything wrong...

You walk after her, half running.

Itsumo...

“Please, wait!” you cry out.

A voice comes from behind. “Oooh? What’s this?” It’s the three from before. “What do you think you’re doing here?”

You stop.
>Take the fall. For Itsumo.

You run.

You can hear and feel someone’s psi flaring up.

Suddenly, the ground before you rises, making you trip. You crash onto the ground, sliding and rolling as your clothes tear at the knees. Your hair falls over your face, and you see your hairpin lying in front of you.

The one Itsumo gave you...

Groaning, you push yourself off the cavern wall inching forward and grabbing it with a hand. You squeeze it, preparing to take off again.

Someone suddenly grabs your arm, “Where do you think you’re running?”

You say, “No...!”
You try to pull away, and you grab onto the cavern walls to stop him from taking you.

Your hands grip the gemstone, feeling its vibration.

“L-let me go!” you cry, and you lash out with your psi.

Your psi peaks positively, and the entire cavern shines like the sun. The energy level drops, and the walls explode.

Twisting and wrapping around, the veins shatter outward, shards of gem and stone flying outward and kicking a thick cloud of dust. You’re unhanded as the three shout and yell, and you run.

You run and run and run, all the way to when you’re out of breath, and then, you run a little bit more, in one hand a hairpin and the other...

“And that’s how I escaped a monastery in the middle of nowhere that nobody knows and nobody probably cares about, running away from a bunch of people who care nothing except meaninglessly horde and hide power in their homes,” you say, “I went to some places, met some people, and then I got ‘adopted.’ The end.”

You look at the boy in front of you, the one who could read your psi signature.

The one who saw everything, and didn’t have anything to say about it.

And he opens his mouth, taking a shallow breath to say,

“Sorry, what?”

Thanks for playing and bearing through all the delays! Why on earth did I just run a session on a backstory flashback? I have no clue.

Comments, questions, criticism is welcome as always.

I didn't mind this at all. It was fun playing as someone else for a bit. I wish we could have learned a little bit more about this clan and its people, but I suppose more specific information will come with time.

Glad to see this back. Poor Kururi.

Still have that problem where you switch scenes without giving us an idea on how much time has passed. Got confused at the beginning considering we got smacked last thread.

Thanks for telling me, anon. I'm a bit awkward with timeskips and all that, but I'll try to at least make it clearer from now on.
