It's all gone to shit.

The odds were slim at best when you all set out on this mission. Honestly, an optomist would have called it a long shot - but nobody expected it to go this badly.

A simple booby trap, trip wire attached to C4 at the edge of Gulliver's Canyon. Any two bit anarchist could have put it together and hell - maybe it wasn't even the enemy who did rig it; but the fact remains...

Hellraiser is dead. The leader of the team, gone in an instant - the greatest hero of an age reduced to giblets falling from a cliff due to his inability to fly.

It's all gone to shit.

Alarms begin to sound far off into the distance, loud enough that even you can hear them. "Yuri is only going to be recharging for eight more hours. We're fucked. We're totally fucked."

You shake your head. "No. We can't fight through them, but we can still make it. Stealth is still the answer."

"What do you mean?" Mara, known across the globe as Princess Pain puts a hand on your shoulder. It's reassuring despite the barbs catching on your costume and the silverback esque size.

"He means that if the Regime's heavy hitters come here we could slip by." Jesuit snaps, "He wants another one of us to die."

"No. Nobody is getting left behind!" Caitlyn, Lusterra demands, "We need to retreat."

"Caitlyn. It's the only way." You say, putting a hand on top of Mara's and looking her in her eyes. "I'm going to be the decoy; if you all loop around to the Redwood Grove you'd only lose about an hour."

Jesuit nods, his domino mask folding into something of a softer expression in a rare display of empathy. The massive alien rifle in his hands is stowed on his back as he tries to gently lead Caitlyn away.

Princess Pain has tears in her eyes as she stomps past the duo. You're thankful the rest of the team aren't witnessing this; if this is to be your death you want to share it with the Original members of The Super League.

"Cait." You say, "I'm sorry you won't get to show me those movies." She begins to shake as she realises what you're saying. "Goodbye."

As you begin floating into the sky, moving out over the gorge and looking back at her even as the distance increases, you can't resist trying to turn some of her snark against her, "Your handle also makes you sound like you use Lust as a power instead of light."

She half laughs despite her tears as Jesuit picks her up and rather unkindly shoves her away; his drill seargeant past coming out in his barked intstructions. "Hey asshole! Make 'em work for it!" He yells, giving you the first modicum of respect in four years.

You turn and face the capital silently, conitnuting to rise. Coming out of the city you see them; Genome. Superpowered creatures created from abducted humans and dissidents across the world. Doctor Darwin's pet project... so many of them.

But you will not falter. You are.

> Psi. The most powerful natural psychic ever, with the most cutting edge neural implants added throughout your career.

> Dagger. Flight. Durability. But your main strength is your super speed combined with your kinetic manipulation. Channeling all your strength through fingertips swiftly. Scarily brutal in CQC.

> Mister Tom. With your magic you've managed to achieve much, but every spell has a cost. You look so young, but you're not in good shape internally.

> Raijin. Being born in commune with Earth, you believed you were crazy until you called lightning down on a mugger. Walking on air and commanding the planet's rage, you will go out with the bang of Thunder.

You are Raijin. The Hero of Earth.

The Regime think you're nothing but a one trick pony; stirring up storms; battlefield control. But they have never seen you unleashed in a stand up brawl. Only one person has.

The sky begins to darken as the dots on the horizon begin converging on your location, a constant tide of dark blots that become a shifting and pulsating tide of enemies that hone in on you.

As rain begins falling; the morning, but two hours past dawn turns into dusk. Your body begins thrumming with energy and the breath of Earth begins to ome swifter and fiercer with every passing moment. Gaia is excited, the almost monsoon level rainfall drenching your white hair and turning your already skin tight suit into a second skin.

Nothing can stop the power of nature unleashed.

Nothing save for the regime.

You see wings, fire, lasers, technological prospthetics, weapons, bulshing flesh of all colours. The Genome are entering your range.

The clouds roll over the horizon, racing forward so quickly you can't believe you are the same person who used to struggle to generate a cloud for shade in the Summer.

Now you are mighty.

Lightning strikes you and you bare your teeth while spreading your fingers and letting electricity arc outward.

The hungry energy flies forth and you find yourself an abundance of targets, mindlessly charging for you through the skies dozens die in the first second.

A sonic blast fo some kind is launched towards you and you rise above it, smacking your hands together and sending a thunderclap right back towards the main body of the creatures.

Scattering them is easy.

But now they are everywhere.

Combat is joined, and eighty fists fly towards you. It is obvious that each would be able to crush a pickup truck from the air displacement.
Luckily, your innate ability to slow incoming attacks saves you from being jumped by them all.

A thumb to an eye sends lightning into a brain, teeth embedding in the soft flesh of your wrist let you steal the air from a furred genome's lungs and crush his organs with air pressure.

It is a blur, everything happening at once; but every second bought is a seocnd the regime is focused on you.

One of the Genome flies above you with several obviously animal based mutations. The each level strange weapons and begins firing wildly.

Speed is never your strongpoint, so instead of trying to dodge, you spin one of the melee beasts between you and the blasts as a human shield.

The monster vibrates for a long time letting out an all too human scream as it begins falling to pieces from the sheer volume of bullets. With a burst of lighting you push yourself at the firing line through the pieces of corpse that was your shield, a bright lue trail marking your path as you clutch the "leader" by his throat and rise.

Textbook swooping. Superhero 101 that manuever.

The Genome are beginning to waver below and you decide to go a little unorthadox to try and scare them off.

You let the Genome plummet, screaming with exertion- you make Gaia strike you with another lightning bolt for a little extra oomph. Grabbing the falling Genome's waist you channel all that extra strength into downward speed and strength; the two of you hurtling towards the ground in an electric aura as you prepare a piledriver straight off the good old WWF days.

Several Genome are caught by your descent and join the pile like some kind of snowball effect of lightning and death, each one splattering onto your Lightning Driver like bugs on a windshield.

Just like bugs on a windshield...

As you land you throw your excess power into the slam, aiming for the transformer that powered the mining nearby mining complex before the regime moved into town. The metal folds instantly and the ground caves just as easy; Gaia's rock is a perfect place to put these abominations.

Plus this transformer is putting out a decent amount of energyyy-

You have barely made a dent in the enemies crowding the sky... you probably roasted about forty genome and even with a chunk of them fleeing you haven't done much. The realization i the only breather you get as a towering Genome plunges from the sky, some kind of weird rock skinned tiger looking creature.

You don't know an animal or a person was tortured to create this monstrosity, but that stupid hat on it's head is enough reason to take it down.

You slide into a prepeared combat stance raising your fists and running electricity through your arms. The thing paces back and forth - alternating between on all fours and growling like a cat and knuckle walking like some kind of orange gorilla.

Readjusting your stance and trying to keep an eye on the Genome massed in the skies above you inspiration strikes.

Fake a distraction.

As overtly as possible you glance up and to the right, which baits the creature into pouncing at you. From the corner of your eye you note that it's hide has become silvery and steam is shooting from it's feet when it lands in the spot you just existed in.

But you've flew upwards, a ball of lightning gathering between your two hands and expanding faster tan any power that you've ever channeled. The creature looks blue from the light of your electricity above and you see a bright orange glow emitting from it's mouth as it bgins to shake.

It starts turning it's head to meet your gaze.

"Shit." Is all you say as you begin flying upward, barging your way through hordes of Genome as some kind of sixth sense behind you tells you where to go. Swerving, rising, descending, spinning and really leaving a black and gold blur in the sky behind you - a particularly close shave gives you some insight into what power this Genome has been injected with.

Fahrenheit's lazer.

The burning red light of the beam has been somehwat of a familiar threat in your superhero career. While not exactly and Arch- enemy like Jesuit and Crusader, Fahrenheight was always one of your fiercest foes.

He actually knew your secret identity, too.

You still wish he never fell into The Regime's hands, his body is probably barely kept alive and harvested for parts by Doctor Darwin regularly...

You supress a shudder as the beam finally stops, leaving ash blowing on the wind. On the bright side most of the common Genome are either ashed or fleeing, meaning it's just you and this thing.

So far all you know is that it has Locomotive's steam boost and Fahrenheight's lazer. From this height, you only make him out as an orange smudge.

Yet... you know exatly where he's standing and his posture... did Gaia give you some new Earthsense power? CAN YOU DO ROCK STUFF NOW?

With a bit of concentration the torrential rain turns to icicles at your back and begin cascading down into the creatre many miles below. He doesn't feel like he staggers or even take any damage due to that strange orange hide of his. Maybe that's a super's power he's stolen that you don't know of?

This thought is interrupted as you have to spin away from another lazer. With a frown you release your grasp of the wind about your body and begin skydiving, the sudden sensation of gravity is almost tranquil as you rotation 180 degrees before hurtling towards the ground.

Another lazer fires towards you. Forcing you to roll to your side, wind whistling by your ears as you do. A scream marking your entry into the creature's range.

You try to acess your new rock powers and suceed, throwing a couple bricks into The Genome's face... to very little effect.

With a start you realize he's directing a bunch of steam to his feet and launching himself right at you. With a savage roar he flies upwards and with a yell you pull your fist back amdist your desperate descent channeling lightning through it.

You become the lightning bolt. A satsfying sonicboom erupting throughout Gulliver's Canyon as you crush his jaw and send 100 million volts straight through the Genome's skull.

Not trusting that to dry his brain, you use the wind to propel yourself into his chest like some kind of human bullet and you both collide with the bedrock floor below, a scant forty feet from the now exposed transformer from your last slam.

It's dead.

But the air is displaced 600 metres behind you. With a start you throw yourself to the side just to see a blue streak flow past you and collide with the canyon wall. The wall caves in from the imapct and a small rockslide begins.

That would have been ugly.

Railgun. Which means...

You see his telltale exhaust fumes as Veteran's jumpsuit slows his fall to the valley floor. His railgun plummetting to the ground behind him, naturally this fight won't give him the chance to line up again.

You make a gesture and whip up a whirpool around Veteran's feet, the water springining into existense from nothingness with such speed you're taken aback.

Moving in closer, you feel Veteran simply walking through the water. Whereas a non metahuman's flesh would be sloughed from their bones and their inisides mulched by the force of your water - he is wearing a;

"Isonic battle suit Kisuke. Surely you didn't forget." His voxbox says
From his back billions of nanobots sketch out the framework and payload of his inferno missiles and he braces himself to unleash a salvo of xeno-inflammatory rockets in your direction.

But... there is no launch. You can still feel the water weighing down his nanobots, he's jammed up for now.

You clap your hands together and call three lightning bolts down onto you for a supercharge, moving witth the force of the strike and adding that momentum to your push. Striking Veteran right in his stupid grey suit, it's all just to try to melt and sizzle out all of his circuits; throwing him off his feet and flying across the canyon with the force of your attacks.

You allow yourself a grim smile as the lights of his suit flicker and die as he collapses into ground, his form sliding through the rain slicken ground and into one of the massive pools of mud that has formed form your storm.

But there is a reason they sent Veteran out.

You have to dodge gatling gun fire, unaccurate and intended to keep you off balance sure - but still able to pierce your costume easily if they struck home. Veteran's suit is designed to fight organics and is resitant to extreme heat, pressure, cold and is electrically and elctromagnetically shielded... he's your antithesis.

Which is why he was such a good teamate before this shitty situation. But those are thoughts for another time, all that mud is messing with your earth sense and you don't have super vision to pick him out of the murky darkness. Fighting against someone with his arsenal in guerilla warfare is not a good idea.

Instead of directly attacking Veteran you stomp you foot into the Earth and flood water from the impact, turning the ground into an even messier quagmire of mud. Clapped hands bring forth gale force winds that buffet Veteran off his feet and into a combat roll.

His exosuit disapears nefore he rises, the camoflauge matrix completely eveloping him before you can continue harassing him with lightning.

You draw inspiration from this though; and by pulling your hands inward in some kind of self hug gesture... yeah there;s a reason your merch never sold with kids isn't there.

The mud flies towards you and you take up residence in a small puddle, shutting your eyes and stilling your breath... both of you are invisbile now.

You're also certain that Michael is somewhere nearby seething that you get to be Dutch and he has to be the Predator. Those comparisons always bugged him.

Use electiricty to locate him. If he is in the mud with you, you'll know. He knows you, so you should use the thing you've got the latest, and thus the least likely to be prepared against; your earth powers.

Create a rudementary copy of yourself from earth, and cover it with mud. Then try to grapple him with it from behind. It will either catch him, or he will be distracted by it, and the moment he fires his gun, is when you will burst out from your puddle.

You allow the sound of thunderous rain to help you relax, slowing your breathing. Seemingly miles away you get the slight snif of antimatter fuel as Veteran's jetpack carres him into the sky.

Regardless, you beging calling several simultaneous lightning strikes to one spot; four hundred million volts per strike. But as each one comes withing ten feet of the ground; you capture it. Mold it.

Condense it into a pure ball of Gaia's might that you can draw form like a battery - a glowing ball of power thirty feet across hovering from the ground that will give you enough juice to burst through Michael's stupid motherfucking -

Your earth sense just lit up like a Christmas Tree. Lots of small impacts all across the mud, rock and dirt.

Mines.

Yo're not familiar with this particular weapon of Veteran's. But he's boasted about never taking anything that would struggle to open a bank vault... so not good.

With a short reach of your new Earth Sense you determine that ther'es between 800 and 1000. And sixteen are scattered around you if you try
to move without flying.

And he's airborne possibly waiting on you.

Shit.

Geysers.
They are just earth, and water. and now, mines.
Let's see how Veteran likes his medicine. We have at least sixteen shots. I wonder how many we can hit with.

Okay now you've never done this before but if you focus water into the ground and then increase the pressure; combined with some earth shaping to create funnels for that pressure to outflow once it's built up to a poin-

Something collides hard with you, metallic heavy and landing with all the impact of a damn airplane.

"FUCK" You and Veteran both shout as something in your chest snaps and something in his suit loudly explodes. The impact has forced you to see white and the world is spinning as you untangle yourself from the grey blue suit of your foe. He does the same, looking at you with fury.

You stagger slightly from the concussion and hear a click.

Veteran's helmet is damaged to the point his visor and external plating has fallen free; so you get to see Michael's eyes go wide at that sound.

"Kisuk-" he begins before you're both consumed by an explosion.

Klaxon. Siren. I want you both to take care of Raijiin. That explosion means Veteran's having trouble.

Klaxon stands up slowly, the white and red spandex suit glowing underneath the lights of The Citadel. "does it have to be us. You could easily-"

"Yuri left me in charge. Your son started questioning his decisions; are you going to follow suit?"

A standoff, between two gods of the capeworld. "You know, Liberty. Sooner or later someone's going to remind you, you're not as invincible as you think you are." Klaxon said, towering other the heroine. Their staredown is cutshort as Klaxon departs. Moving just shy of light speed.

You cough, eyes clearing slowly to leave you on your back staring up at the sky. Gaia's womb... he dispersed your whole storm with a bunch of mines.

You don't even move. "Michael? You alive?" you enquire.

"I'm... not great, but alive." He coughs and you hear something hitting the mud, "You clumsy motherfucker."

"You fell out of the damn sky."

"You fucked up my jumpjet with your stupid whirpool." He spits back, while you focus on rolling over onto your stomach and trying to get a knee under you. He's somewhere to your left.

"Well, you started with the railgun. Excuse me for not having much sympa-" You look over to where his voice was and see, Veteran is in two parts. The lower half of his armour is a mangled mess of scrap thirty feet from his top.

His eyes show the terror he's exepriencing, the few spots of skin not open or drenched in coughed up blood looking deathyl pale. His blonde hair has been torn off by his helmet's detsruction leaving him looking like the soldier he was before the suit found him.

Numbed, you just float over. "I have no idea how I'm alive." He admits, a ghost of a insinciere smile on his face. "I think the suit won't let me die." He frowns, "You couldn't take a punch from Carly..." He sees your reaction to the name..."I'm saying; how the fuck did you get off with broken ribs and a concussion while I'm..."

"I wish I knew." You say in a whisper, standing over Michael.

"Hey Kisuke. Why did you leave the regime?" He asks, "I mean... I know Tokyo was horrible. But you still seemed to understand why we needed to do it."

The memories of those riots. The military, Criminals, Supervillains and heroes alike standing shoulder to shoulder... the supression. Bulwark fighting Red Ranger... The first time a hero killed a hero.

Yuri's orders.

"It was horrible Michael. We should have listened to the protests." You lie, in the vague hope he won;t press.

"Bullshit. Real reason." He says.. the left arm tries to move, but you see it's bent the wrong way and severa of his weapons are deploying inside the flesh of his arm. Maybe that joke about his suit being a parasite were a lot more accurate than Lusterra intended.

"I found out how Doctor Darwin makes Genome. We should have never trusted him, but we should have spoken up long ago." You admit, the admission feeling like a weight off your chest.

"Yuri gave permission for whatever was hardcore enough to get you to walk?" Michael asks before he is overcome with shudders.

You silently nod.

"Shit." He says shutting his eyes and showing pain for the first time in this conversation.

"Shit." You agree.

"So... about me." He asks looking at you pointedly.

"Michael."

"Kisuke. I don't know what this suit is doing to me; but I sure as hell don't want to find out." Micahel says, sounding calm and not at all fired up for once in his life, "I won't force you, but I will ask you. Please end this. If not out of empathy, get revenge for Carly." He's practically begging.

"Michael..." you mutter running your hands through your white locks.

"For what it's worth. I didn't think I'd actually tag her with the railgun."

I have something poetic for exactly this moment, but I am afraid it would be just a cry in the rain.

"Okay." You say placing a hand on his temple. "I'm not going to pretend we were close. But we worked well together."

"Yeah. In the Super League and the Regime we kicked some ass." Michael says in obvious difficulty.

"I'm guessing you have already decided your last words." You say placing a finger on his temple, you're not too comfortable with this, but you're doing this mercifully damnit.

"You have no idea." Michael grins.

"Blade Runner?" You hazard.

"Yup."

"Let me make it rain a bit heavier." You do just that, pulling you mask down away from your eyes so he has a face to look at as he dies. "Ready."

He spits blood into the watery mud and straightens up as much as a torso can,

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die."

You tramsfer 1 million volts thoguhr your finger and directly into his brain. The electric chair is a barbaric execution device that cooks the brain rather than turn off the pats of the brain needed to sustain life. Technlogolical limitations at the time of implementation.

You have no such worry and painlessly turn you friend's life off like a lightswitch. It probably tingled.

With a sigh, you wipe tears from your weary eyes and let the wind gather around you. Flying upwards, you begin moving towards the Citadel. Your stormclouds following behind and growing ever more violent.

To be continued when I feel like it.

I enjoyed reading it, though I'm a bit disappointed that I was too late to participate. Are you going to just keep throwing stuff at us or is it possible to just massacre our way to the capitol and kill the good doctor or Yuri or something?

The woman who talked down to Klaxon would use Superman as a condom. Narrowly beat Superman

Yuri is about two pips above her.
