Not too late!

A blinding flash assaults your eyes, an ear-shattering boom hammers your eardrums, and a violent trembling of the ground beneath your feet nearly forces your legs out from under you. The blast fired by Trunks packed quite a bit of power, and as vision returns to your eyes, you can see that it did considerable damage as well.

The lab is, for all intents and purposes, gone. The cave that housed it has been obliterated, leaving you and the others standing on a flat, rocky plateau standing in the shadow of the surrounding mountains. The lab equipment and open pods, as well as the tiled floor have been blown away, along with the machinery connected to Sixteen's pod.

Yet, somehow, that single pod with the number 16 written on it remains, seemingly unscathed. Just what is that thing made of?

Nineteen and Twenty are unharmed, of course. You just hope that they weren't able to absorb energy from that blast.

"Nineteen, he's disconnected from life support," Gero informs his compatriot, sounding deathly calm. "Activate him quickly."

The clown-like machine nods, starting toward the pod.

"NO!" Trunks howls, throwing himself toward Nineteen.

All he receives for his efforts is a backhanded strike that easily sends him packing in his exhausted state. The poor boy put all he had into that blast, yet it somehow failed.

"Tofoo, this might be a good time to grab your kid and get out of here," Piccolo tells you, fearful impatience in his voice. "It looks like coming here was a mistake. I don't think we'll be winning this battle."

"Alright, I'll grab Trunks and get out of here," you tell the Namekian. "Be ready to run."

Piccolo answers with a nod, and you spring yourself toward Trunks.

Nineteen, apparently thinking that you're attempting to stop him from activating Number Sixteen, fires beams of light from his eyes, but you manage to speed past those and reach your son. Trunks is already in the process of getting back up, so it doesn't take much to help him in the right direction.

Twenty thrusts his right hand toward the two of you, sending an orb of light in pursuit of you and your son as you race away from the recently-destroyed lab. Trunks stops and turns toward it, but before he can do anything, Piccolo pops up between him and the blast and backhands it away. The two then turn and resume their retreat. This time, Twenty lets you all go.

"This is bad," Trunks says in a panicked tone. "Terrible."

He clenches his eyes shut and cries out in frustration. "This wasn't supposed to happen! He wasn't supposed to be ready for years!"

Piccolo snorts. "I already have a way, and I heard you talking with the old man. The second we get back to the Lookout, we're going right to Kami and doing what we need to do. Understand?"

Trunks looks perplexed. "What are you two talking about?"

For the moment, you decide not to explain the plan to Trunks. He'll figure out what's going on soon enough and that will be that. He looks annoyed at nobody answering him, but that's about it.

As you approach the Lookout, you notice something flying away from it, recognizing it as your wife's airship.

Nodding, your son rushes toward the airship, leaving you and Piccolo to fly side by side the rest of the way, landing on the Lookout and going inside without a word to anybody else. Neither of you say a thing as you make your way to the throne room, opening the door to find Kami waiting with a resigned expression on his face.

"So, it is time, then," he states upon seeing you.

"Yes, enough wasting time," Piccolo declares, stepping forward.

Kami looks toward you. "And you, Tofoo, are you ready to accept the title of Guardian?"

So, we're a full grown man, we shouldn't be spending our days all care free and just goofing off. Even if we hadn't become guardian I still would've voted to have Tofoo constantly training, developing techniques, and getting stronger. This entire android saga has made me realize we've lost our roots. What happened to the fucking bear? What happened to the super tank warrior that could take any hit and give it back twice as hard? We lost him to goofing off and trying to just ki blade shit all the time. Well not again, not for me anyway. I don't know about you but I personally don't want to go down the other humans' same path. We're they just go all carefree and never really bother training anymore, some of them quitting entirely. Nope, we're a fucking master son, we're gonna train till the gods themselves and their angels acknowledge our strength.

We train as much as anyone and we would have never stopped training. Tofoo has faced enough threats that have come Earth's way to ever slack off to the point of stagnation, not to mention his rivalry with Goku and Piccolo always forcing Tofoo to push harder and harder to catch up with them. I'm most concerned with losing time for training than the rest hell I always vote to ignore family during training time even though I enjoy spending time with them like just recently teaching Trunks to fly or when we watched him with that train show. As far as the roots thing, I'm in agreement.

"We're wasting time with your sentimental garbage," Piccolo tells the two of you. "Get this over with so we can deal with the Androids."

Kami sighs. "You're right, Piccolo. We've prolonged this long enough."

"So, what do I need to do to become Guardian?" you ask.

"I need you to kneel before me," Kami tells you. "I will handle the rest."

You feel him place his hand above your head, and then a sudden jolt of...something shoot through you.

You feel a great warmth appear inside of you, spreading throughout your entire body before shrinking down into your chest, seeming to grow smaller and smaller before vanishing from your senses.

You feel energies swirling around you, and hear voices whispering in the distance. You try to make out what they're saying, but they vanish just as quickly as they came, and the maddening swirl of energies begins to dissipate.

A white glow surrounds your body, covering you from head to toe, and you feel as if a powerful storm is raging around you. Yet, at the same time, you feel calm, the one peaceful spot in a raging tempest.

The glow fades away, and the storm around you does the same. You feel different somehow, though you can't really explain how. You suppose you feel a tad stronger, but you know that there's more to it than that.

Looking up, you see Kami staring back down at you.

"Rise, Guardian of the Earth."

"Well, I had feared this was going to happen," he tells you. "In any case, the Earth has a fine Guardian to watch over it when I'm gone."
