You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"Ten minutes to LZ!" The Osprey pilot warns.

Man, when the Admiral and Captain said that they wanted more recon missions into the Dark Zone, you didn't expect them to really mean it on the next day!

However, your squad lineup was quite different from the last time. You, Woel, San Fran, and Paz were being split up to support different recon teams. For yours, you had White Plains, Haida, Blyskawica, Graf Spee, and Kidd backing you up. You also Mulberry tagging along, who was here for her own reasons.

There was also Sam, whose stealth field generator made her particularly valuable. However, for better or worse, there was only one of her...

It was decided that since Mulberry would be accompanying your squadron, Sam would be a definite addition. After all, Mulberry herself was a critical component to the overall war effort, otherwise no offensive campaign against the Abyssals would be possible.

You wonder how many strings she had to pull (or how many necks she had to press her heel on) to convince the Admiral to greenlight this.

Meanwhile, as you were drawing near the ominous Storm Wall, you took stock of your small squadron. Haida seemed to be trying to calm her nerves through some sort of meditation, only to be constantly disturbed by Blys who kept flicking her hair or blowing in her ears. All in good natured fun, you were sure.

Graf Spee, the dutiful German she was, was scanning printouts of your debriefings and general intelligence reports of the Dark Zone with the intensity of a machine. Kidd was peeking over her shoulder, nodding and pretending to understand the German mutterings.

Finally, Sam and White Plains were flanking Mulberry, who was brewing hot chocolate for them both.

You dash up to Mulberry with an eager look on your face.

"Ah, you want some, too?" Mulberry smiles as she pulls a mug out of nowhere, already filled with steaming hot chocolate and held with such skill and expertise that not even the rocking caused from the turbulence outside could make a single ripple on the surface.

"Thaaaaanks!" You grin happily as you take a cautionary sip. As expected, it was at the perfect temperature. Warm enough to maximize the enriched flavor and sweetness, yet not so hot that it would scald your tongue or mouth. Amazing as expected.

"This is the good shit." Sam sighs in contentment.

"Language, Sam." Mulberry tuts.

"You know, I was thinking, Mulberry." White Plains frowns. "Since you're a mobile harbor, doesn't that mean you could theoretically act as a moving airbase?"

"Oh? I thought you were rather proud of your little air complement, White Plains." Mulberry smiles.

"Well, it's not that-" White Plains stammers. "But the extra planes would be nice."

"I'm afraid it's not that simple." Mulberry shakes her head. "I guess I would be the equivalent of one of the Abyssal... what do they call them... Harbor Princesses? Manifesting my Rig would create a rather unique presence that they would most assuredly detect."

"Even through my stealth field?" Sam raises an eyebrow.

"I'd rather not test it in an environment like this." Mulberry remarks as she ships her tea.

"Mulberry has a point." You grunt. "This is a recon mission, so we shouldn't deploy her Rig unless we really have to."

"Yeah, I get it." White Plains nods and returns her focus to her hot chocolate.

"Yer just overthinking it, Whitey!" Sam laughs as she finishes sucking down what's left of her own hot chocolate.

"Five minutes!" The pilot the calls out.

You watch as Mulberry quickly but smoothly sets away brewing equipment as it winks out of existence, no doubt being folded back into her Rig.

However, as you watch, you get the distinct feeling that something is troubling her.

"So, why are you so interested in the Voice?" You ask Mulberry, sipping at your hot chocolate.

"Well, who isn't?" Mulberry gives a slight smile. "I haven't met a single shipgirl who hasn't thought about their origins at least once."

"Well, yeah." You admit.

"But still, it's clear that us shipgirls are not natural phenomena. Nor are the Abyssals." Mulberry's smile falters for a brief second. "It's always bothered me, how I seem to know more than others, like how we are creations of some other, unknowable entity, and how we have some sort of connection with the Abyssals. But that knowledge is fragmented, incomplete. As if whoever put this knowledge is deliberately taunting me."

"Yeah, that guy did seem like a real asshole." Sam confirms. "Would've socked him myself if we weren't being chased by Abyssals."

"Perhaps that's something I would do, too." Mulberry chuckles at Sam's words. "But let us worry about it if we find him."

"We're over the LZ!" The pilot yells.

The loading ramp lowers, and immediately the cold chill of the Arctic winds blasts into craft. You all wince at the sudden temperature drop and disembark, your feet touching down in the frigid waters.

"All right, Hoel, so how are we doing this?" Haida asks, her eyes already scanning your surroundings cautiously.

"Hmph. It doesn't look so bad." Graf Spee huffs as she glances at the Storm Wall almost disdainfully.

"Kidd, I'm trusting ya to keep an eye on Sam, White Plains and Mulberry, ya got that?" You ask your fellow Fletcher.

"Aye aye, Cap'n!" Kidd salutes.

"I'll keep an eye on the flanks and engage isolated units if needed." Graf Spee nods.

"All right, let's move out, then!" You speed out to the head of the formation. "Haida, Blys, form up on me!"

The two destroyers do so, with the Canadian coming up on your left and the Pole on your right. You look on at the wall of black, swirling fog ahead of you. Even though it was your second time here, that wall was still unsettling to look at. However, you knew it could be penetrated now, which gave you some modicum of comfort.

You, Haida, and Blys are the first to pierce the veil...

Fortunately for you, your first bout through the Storm Wall has made you more comfortable finding a way through it. Well, "comfortable" probably wasn't the right word, but it was a lot easier this time.

Not to mention, Haida and Blys' experience running northern convoys played a big role in allowing them to keep up with you as well.

You check your datalink, and could immediately spot Woel and Paz's signals, already on the other side of the Storm Wall, on their own missions. However, with the way space seemed to be warped within the Dark Zone, you couldn't really tell exactly how far they were from you. You take a look behind you, and the bright flare of Anna's guiding beacon was still there, like the morning sun.

Everything was going well so far. You power up your radar to ping the surrounding area, but you don't find any immediate threats. However, you do see what seems to be some sort of supply convoy. A quartet of the fat Wa-class transports leisurely steaming into the Dark Zone, escorted only by a pair of destroyers and a cruiser.

A tempting opportunity. If you acted fast enough, you could probably destroy them all without anybody noticing. It would be a small hit to their logistics, but if it mean delaying the completion of that Colossus by even a day, maybe it was worth it.

You decide to ignore the convoy. You've got bigger things to worry about, after all.

"Hey, Sam, so you remember where you first ran into that guy?" You ask.

"Not really." Sam sighs. "And either way, I don't recognize this place at all. It's like we're in a completely different area."

Yeah, nobody's really figured out the Dark Zone yet.

"If I may." Mulberry speaks up. "I believe I have a method of finding him, but it might make us more... noticeable."

"How noticeable?" You ask cautiously.

"It may increase our chances of being spotted visually by quite a bit." Mulberry cautions. "But I'm certain it will work."

"I still have my planes. They can spread out to do some recon." White Plains offers.

"Sam, you sure you're not feeling that weird urge like last time?" You ask.

"Nope. Got nothing." Sam responds. "Pretty sure that asshole is done with me."

Time passes. Minutes, hours, it all felt the same as you all slowly sail along the dark, frigid sea. Finally, White Plains' eyes shoot open.

"I think I found something!" She exclaims. "There's a large fog bank several kilometers from here. It looks like that fog you described when you were looking for Sam."

"Yes!" You grin. Finally, a lead! "Just point us where to go!"

All of you follow White Plains' directions, and sure enough, there was the fog bank. A massive blob of roiling, white mist that seemed to give off an unearthly glow. Then again, everything about this place was unearthly. But still, it didn't seem to fit the surroundings.

"Well shit. That looks familiar." Sam groans.

"We're not ALL going into that, are we?" Haida wonders.

"Well, why not?" Graf Spee grins. "If anything's dumb enough to pick a fight, we'll have the numbers!"

"But we don't know what's back there." Haida counters.

"And here I thought you Canadians had bigger spines than that." Graf Spee rolls her eyes.

"What's that supposed to mean, Kraut?" Blys growls.

"None of you have to go in. I'm sure I'll be able to handle things myself." Mulberry tries to assure you all.

"All right, I'll go in with Mulberry." You declare.

"What?!" Haida blinks.

"The way I see it, if things go south, you'll only lose the two of us!" You reason. "Plus, last time, the Abyssals pretty rudely interrupted us, so we'll also be counting on you all to keep them off our backs if they show up!"

"A bold plan." Graf Spee grins.

"But-" Haida grabs your hand.

"Haida, you'll be in charge while I'm gone." You grin to her. "If we're not back in an hour, you can come in guns blazing. Got it?"

"R-roger." Haida nods as she reluctantly lets go.

"C'mon, Mul, let's go track that bastard down!" You grin.

"I'm looking forward to it." Mulberry nods.

Making sure that she was following close behind, you dive into the white mist...

Mulberry holds her hand out to you, and you immediately catch on and take it. You notice her hand is cold and shivering. Despite her cool, confident demeanor, you could tell that she was just as anxious and scared of what was to come as you all are.

Also, it was an effective way to make sure you weren't going to get separated in this mist.

You try a few exploratory pings of your radar, but get absolutely nothing in return. It's not as if it was being jammed or blocked, either. There was literally NOTHING around you. Thankfully, Anna's beacon was still active, but greatly diminished. A flickering candle fighting a losing battle against the darkness.

Mulberry's grip on your hand tightens as the mist begins to thin out.

And the two of you see...

And in front of you, you could see a small island with a hill in the center. On top of that hill, dominating the whole landmass was a small chapel, built out of ancient stone. Right behind it was a massive tree, and all around the island was littered with white flowers.

"...what is this place?" Mulberry wonders, a confused look on her face.

"I thought you would know." You frown.

From within the chapel's windows, your optics could pick up a flickering light within. There was life on this island, and you had an idea of what it might be.

"Come on." You lead Mulberry towards the island, slowly and cautiously walking up the small set of stairs cut into the ground leading up to the chapel.

The doors are already open, and inside, you could see a man sitting in a chair, a blazing fireplace behind him. The way the lighting from the fireplace worked conveniently shrouded the man in shadow, making it impossible to see him clearly. However, you already knew who you were dealing with.

"Ah, Hoel, it seems we're fated to cross paths again and again!" The Stranger laughs. "And Mulberry, it' been FAR too long! How have you been?"

"Well enough, I suppose." Mulberry says softly.

"Now, I know you're here for answers, aren't you?" The Stranger chuckles.

"You're damn right we are!" You growl as you step forward. "Quit jerking' us around!"

"Hey, hey!" The stranger raises one hand in warning to you. "There are rules that must be followed! Hell, I'm risking quite a lot interacting with directly with the pieces, you know!"

"Pieces..." Mulberry pauses. "Is this some game to you...?"

"Me? No! Just a little gig I was hired to take care of." The Stranger laughs. "You know what, you two have shown a lot of spunk, and you've exceeded all of our expectations, so I'll give you a freebie! Ask me anything you want!"

"Anything?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Yep. One question!" The Stranger giggles. "I'm quite curious what you're most concerned about!"

"How can we beat the Abyssals?" You ask.

"Oh boy, you go and ask the most boring question out of the lot, huh?" The Stranger sighs, apparently disappointed. "Well, sure, I can tell you that, easy. You know how the Abyssals are a very hive based sort of organization? Relying on bigwigs like the Princesses to order them around?"

"Yeah." You nod. "You saying there's a... Queen leading them all?"

"Ding ding ding! That's correct!" The Stranger nods. "She's where all Abyssals are born from, not to mention the one keeping this gateway opened through sheer force of will alone."

"Gateway...?" Mulberry blinks.

"You don't SERIOUSLY think this place you call the Dark Zone is actually anywhere on Earth, do you?" The Stranger laughs. "But we're getting a little off topic here. You kill the Queen, and the whole Abyssal war machine falls apart."

"And you'll tell us where she is, right?" You raise an eyebrow.

"You already know where she is." The Stranger replies confidently. "That giant Abyssal they're building out of old ship hulls? She's going to be its heart."

"So you're saying that if we defeat the Colossus, we defeat the Queen, and therefore all of the Abyssals..." Mulberry summarizes.

"Yep! The shit you've been pulling off has gotten them scared shitless! They're going all in on this!" The Stranger confirms. "I mean, who would have thought those humans would just go and MAKE their own shipgirl out of Abyssal parts? Freaking crazy, I tell you! Anyways, I think that answered your question..."

"W-wait!" Mulberry blurts out. "T-there's so much more we need to know..."

"Hey, only one freebie allowed. If you want more, well... it's gonna cost you." The Stranger shrugs.

"And what is your price?" Mulberry asks.

"Certainly not money, if that's what you're thinking." The Stranger replies. "But, perhaps there's something..."

"Like what?" You growl, somewhat curious.

"Quid pro quo!" The Stranger exclaims. "You do a little favor for me, and I'll return it!"

"What kind of favor?" You ask suspiciously.

"Well, you know your special little friend Pacifica?" The Stranger says eagerly. "Well, as Abyssals are wont to do, they've been trying their damnedest to copy her, which I find HIGHLY ironic considering her origins, but I digress!"

The Stranger snaps his fingers, and an image of a small looking Abyssal appears in the air before him. She was small, with short white hair, and a massive, weaponized tail protruding from her back. She didn't seem too threatening at first-

"My sources tell me that this is going to be called the 'Re-class' Abyssal. Got a little bit of everything in her, with battleship guns, aircraft hangars, and pretty much everything in between! Sound familiar?"

That DID sound alarmingly like Paz...

"So, you manage to nab this thing alive for me, I'll spill the beans on this little predicament you've all found yourselves in! So how about it?"

You see Mulberry about to answer, but she pauses and turns to you first. Looks like she wasn't going to do this without your consent.

"Come on, this is a time sensitive offer here!" The Stranger chides.

"It's a deal." You nod. Sounded simple enough.

"Great!" The Stranger giggles as the island rumbles, a sign that it was beginning to collapse, just like that dark version of Alcatraz. "Well, you'll have an opportunity to do so right now!"

"What do you mean!?" Mulberry asks, trying to maintain her footing.

"I tipped off the Abyssals that you're here!" The Stranger says happily. "I'm fairly certain they'll send quite the response force, including the Re-class!"

That son of a-

"Hoel! HOEL!" Your radio crackles, as if just now your communications decided to work.

"Haida?" You wonder.

"We've got incoming!" Haida reports. "White Plains' recon caught sight of them! We've got a whole fleet being led by the AA and DD Princesses, and a new Abyssal we haven't seen before. We need to start moving!"

You shoot a poisonous look at the Stranger, but he's already gone, leaving only an empty chair in crumbling chapel.

"Come on!" Mulberry strides out of the chapel and back towards the sea. "The Stranger said he merely needed this Re-class delivered to him alive, yes? Then I suppose this is the best time as any."

You then start to see the lines of Mulberry's Rig materializing around her. She really was gearing up for a fight!

Anyway, here's a plan,
Sam's stealth field should counter the AA Princess's radar, while Graf and handle her paper cut like shells.
WP and Mulberry's planes can handle the Re's planes while Blys and Haida take Re. Which leaves Hoel to deal with her arch rival, the DD Princess.

Hah, now was a good a time as any, right? It was time to do what you did best and kick some major Abyssal ass!

"Haida, get everybody in formation and put them into a battle line!" You instruct as you dash out of the chapel and towards the water. "We're gonna fight!"

"W-what!?" Haida stammers.

"You heard me!" You say as you summon up your Rig. "Get ready to engage!"

"Aye aye, this be a proper ship battle!" Kidd says enthusiastically.

"Since we have no more use hiding, I'll contribute as well." Mulberry says as her Rig begins to fully form.

You recall the last time she went full power. Sure, it allowed to her to singlehandedly destroy an Abyssal Princess, but it put her out of commission for quite a while...

Don't make the mistake of trying to reserve Mulberry, it'll only endanger her more in the end if we don't try to fight at full power. capturing alive is much harder than killing something. We'll only run the risk of more people getting hurt by trying to do more with less.

"Don't go all out just yet." You caution Mulberry. "Just let out some planes right now and we'll figure it out from there."

"As you wish." Mulberry nods as her Rig begins to form airstrips, where miniature planes begin the process of launching off. Soon, the air is thick with fighters, ranging from P-38s to P-51s as they join White Plains' Hellcats to do battle in the air against the swarm of Abyssal fighters closing in.

Meanwhile, the AA and DD Princesses were closing in, serving as a vanguard for the Re-class, which seemed to be fast enough to keep pace with her fellow Princesses. The rest of the Abyssal fleet was still quite a ways behind, just going to show how eager the Princesses were to engage you all.

You figure you only had a few minutes until the bulk of the Abyssal fleet caught up. You'd have to make these minutes count.

First of all, you needed to pick a target. The Re was your primary objective right now, but the AA and DD Princesses were both highly dangerous in their own right. The DD Princess was a very quick and agile little bitch that could easily flank your formation and hit the more vulnerable ships in your fleet. The AA Princess could effectively neutralize any air attack coming her way and prevent White Plains and Mulberry from achieving air superiority.

You had to pick one to engage, and hope the others could pick up the slack.

You immediately vector in towards the AA Princess. Right now, your squadron's air power was the only thing giving you an edge in this battle. If you could take out the AA Princess, then this battle was in the bag.

But this was still a Princess you were talking about. Could you really fight one on your own? Asking for air support against her was just dumb considering her specialization, so you'd have to rely on the help of other surface ships instead...

"Arrr! Time to plunder that scallwag!" Kidd roars as she turns to form up on you.

"Jawohl." Graf Spee nods as she turns your way as well.

"Haida, Blys, run interference on the DD Princess and Re-class! And be careful, that Re bitch has way bigger guns than her size suggests!"

"Roger!" Haida replies.

"Makes things more exciting!" Blys laughs as she twirls her lance, its crimson pennant fluttering furiously in the air.

Haida breaks off to intercept the Re-class, her 120mm guns firing off furiously, the shells bouncing harmlessly off of the Abyssal's thick armor. Her attempts to battle it were almost comical if it weren't for the sheer weight of air power bearing down on the Re. Helldivers and Thunderbolts relentlessly strafed and bombed the Re, not necessarily causing major damage, but definitely disrupting its attacks despite its own onboard air wing doing its best to keep White Plains' and Mulberry's fighters away.

Meanwhile, Blys moves to intercept the DD Princess. Naturally, the DD Princess tries to shoot past, gunning directly for you, but Blys had her name for a reason, and like a flash, she's already in front of the DD Princess, checking her progress.

This gives you a window where you, Kidd, and Graf Spee could gang up on the AA Princess.

However, the AA Princess was far from dumb, she knew you three were gunning for her. Immediately, her twin barreled turrets swivel to take aim at you. You remember from the briefing that unlike other Abyssal destroyers, the AA Princess had rapid firing, radar-guided guns which made her frighteningly accurate.

The most obvious tactic was just to charge straight in and force the AA Princess to split her fire, hopefully allowing for an opening for at least one of your exploit. Or, you and Kidd could take cover behind Graf Spee and hope her armor could absorb all the hits for you.

Finally, you could try using your own radar set to jam the AA Princess', though that would force you to stay behind in a support position.

"Graf, Kidd, go get her! I'll try to jam her fire control radar!" You bark.

The two ships nod and charge, their guns already firing away at the AA Princess, who's trying to keep her distance as shells both heavy and light fall all around her. You meanwhile power up your radar and concentrate on the AA Princess in an attempt use the sheer power output of your own radar to overwhelm hers.
