“Isn’t he beautiful?” Oleg stands with you and your crew. Everyone is awe at the sight of your newly refurbished tank. It was now a Comet I tank. A longer barrel, some tougher armor, a curvier profile, everything makes the Comet a Comet. It was even filling you with a sense of pride. Oliver has grown up. “He retains all your modifications as well. All he needs is a crew.”

“He’s beautiful!” Winona has sparkles in her eyes, looking at the tank.

“I can’t wait to beat up some Frenchies in this!” Stack proclaims.

Josephina and Ingrid raise their hands, already climbing up onto it. “Uh. Question.” They look down at the hatches. “Why do the hatches look so cramped?” Ah, that does look like a problem. Ingrid’s hatch looks practically like its half her size.

Oleg shrugs. “Eh… that’s a design fault, not my problem. But you will being good in it, da?”

Other than that, everyone seems happy with it for now.

> + 10 MORALE TO ALL CREW MEMBERS

The hot sun had transitioned to a more cooler climate. With the summer gone, it was now time for the fall season to come in.

What should you do now?

> Go for a drive in your new Comet tank.

You ride in the commander’s hatch with Stack and Winona riding on top of the turret. The hatches up front were opened up to allow Ingrid and Josephina to poke their heads out to see what was what. People had gathered around to see you all get comfortable with your new Comet tank. It performs relatively similarly to the Cromwell, but thanks to the added weight there does seem to be less of a speedy aspect to it. Regardless, the extra armor and the bigger gun should more than make up for it.

“All stop,” you say. The Comet comes to a halt. “That’s pretty good. Can’t wait to bring out to the field.”

“Yeah!” Stack grins happily, patting the turret with gusto. “Y’all are gonna wet your panties when we go fishing for French fries, woohoo!” She high fives Winona at that.

“Oooooh, Elodie~!” You hear… another Comet tank? Lyra pulls up in her own Comet tank, grinning at you. “Ooooh, what’s this? You actually got a Comet tank too? What a surprise!” She what. How did- “Griselda picked this up from that government thing she told me about. And now it’s ours! What do you think?”

Well, depend on which definition you used. Russian use three tank platoon, WW2 US use five-tank. I am referring to four-tank platoon.

But yeah, its already pretty much a platoon now. We only need to bring our fanclub to better shape now.

“I think it looks awesome, Lyra!” You pump your fist, smiling at her. “We’ll form a nice team together!” Lyra gives a you V-sign as she goes speeding off in her Comet. Ahaha… ah, copycat. But, she’s nice about it at least. And the more good tanks like these, te better. Griselda’s smart to take the Comet over say indirect fire anyway.

“Ellie!” You see Elyse van der Lynde wave to you. “Griselda needs you! It’s time to get planning!”

“Alright!” you say.

-

-

“Alright. Let’s welcome our new commanders to the table.” Griselda and all the commanders applaud the newcomers into our midst. In the Swedish m/42, Kathy Wheeler. In the Challenger, Elyse van der Lynde. And in the Comet tank, Lyra Caldwell. They all happily smile at everyone, Elyse much more shyly looks down however. “Today’s plan, is a simple one. Because in the center of today’s map is a giant hill.”

“So… we park our tanks on the hill and let them charge at us?” asks Regina.

“Yep!” Griselda grins, folding her arms. “Way I see it, their heavies can’t climb like our tanks can. So for the most part, we’ll have the advantage. But… I got something cooking too in case that’s not enough. Because Perrine has offered to loan us a whole lot of I-beams to use as tank traps! So we’ll dig in, let them come at us, defend until we’re blue in the face.” Serafina raises her hand. “What’s up, Serafina?”

“Um. Considering we’re first in our division and this is the second-to-last set in the tournament…” Everyone looks to her. “Why don’t we just bumrush them?”

“Eh?” Griselda tilts her head, confused.

“Yeah!” Regina leans in, agreeing. “We’ve always been so concerned so tactics since we’ve been fighting for the Wild Card. But now that Christie’s collapsed and we’re in first place, maybe we can afford to take a little risk!”

“You want to throw the game?” you ask.

“Not throw,” says Serafina. “But a pitched battle? Maybe…” Griselda looks confused. All the other commanders start discussing it as well. It seems half and half are agreeing and disagreeing at this point, with the newbie commanders staying out of it.

Hm.

It primarily features German heavy tanks like Tiger Is, Tiger IIs, and some french heavies like the B1bis.

It's also supplemented by their Genoese transfer students in the Italian Semoventes. Joan D'Orleans was also looking to recruit some their Nashorn aces from Switzerland but they didn't want to play.

“Griselda’s plan is the go-to for now,” you say. “I agree with her. While it may not be very fun to just take potshots at charging tanks all day, it’s safe. We don’t want to collapse right before the tournament ends and lose our shot at the postseason.”

Serafina frowns, sighing deeply. “Fine.”

Griselda smiles at you, then nods. “Don’t worry. Once we thin their ranks, we can consider a countercharge I suppose.” The team appears to be appeased by that. “Right. Let’s get our tanks ready. The battle starts an hour from now. Try not to let our position in the divisional rankings get to your head. I don’t want anybody taking any risks out there.” With that, the meeting is adjourned. All the commanders leave except for you, Iris, and Griselda. “Thanks for that, Ellie.”

“It’s nothing,” you say.

Iris says, “I suppose a lady is also cautious, regardless if it entertains her or not.”

Griselda leans on the map table, frowning. “Still. We’re at the end of the road. Once we get past this match. It’ll just be Zhou Enlai left. And then we’re on our way to the postseason.” She sighs. “I can see it now already, all of us holding that trophy.”

“And if we lose?” Iris asks.

“Well…” Griselda shrugs. “Different story. I assume you both are ready?”

> Move to immediately secure the hill.

Your fast tanks are the best candidates for securing it quickly and easily. All this Agincourt, Crecy, or whatever business is filling you with confidence. This might turn into a curbstomp if they just charge in.

Lyra grins as her Comet rides alongside yours. “Heh! I bet mine’s faster!” You roll your eyes. Not the time, Lyra.

“Please wait!” Elyse calls out for you all. The Challenger in theory is actually supposed to be as fast as your tanks, but thanks to the newbie crew in it, they were hesitant to push its limits. So it was lagging behind a little bit.

Finally, you arrive on the southern side of the hill. You take a look at your binoculars and look to see Joan D’Orleans in the flatlands to the west. They were formed up in line, with the Genoese formed in skirmish lines ahead of them. Typical medieval thinking. Dalia and Lyra break off to start digging the pits for the stakes. While you and Elyse start moving north.

Still, what could Joan D’Orleans be planning? They’re not moving it seems. And you’re too far for suppressive fire.

The smoke will conceal our work so they can't tell exactly what we're up to.

If they're sitting there, they're likely waiting for our team to split up as most teams do in most matches. If I had to guess, Orleans' usual tactics are probably to wait for the enemy to split into the typical 3 pronged advance then obliterate each force piecemeal with their devastating charges, keeping their own team as a single force. Once it becomes clear we're not splitting up and not coming out, they'll likely position for a frontal charge, believing their heavy tanks and greater number will carry the day and the crest of the hill behind us will prevent us from escaping.

> Start Fortifying
> Deploy Smoke (3/3)

Smoke canisters are popped to disguise your work for now. You decide to wait for the rest of the team to show up for now and start working on the stakes. You and Elyse move to the northern end of the hill and start digging out the stakes. Stack and Josephina work furiously at it. After about a half hour or so of this, the rest of the team finally arrives and the formation starts to take shape.

Iris takes the heavy tanks, consisting of herself, Serafina, Serina, and Regina and forms the center line. You have placed Lyra and Dalia on the south end and yourself and Elyse on the north end. And finally, Griselda handles the reserve forces behind Iris.

A good fortification plan if you do say so yourself.

The smoke you popped eventually dies down, and you take another look out.

Still not moving. Huh.

“Do they know!?” yells Regina. “Do they know what our plan is!?”

Who knows honestly. They could be having a tea party down there or something.

> INTUITION

You and Griselda agree that you need to start fortifying even further. The team starts disembarking spare crewmembers to dig ditches for the tanks to hide in. Shallow ones, but every advantage counts, especially on a hill. You lean back and let Josephina drive Oliver into a small pit for him. After another half hour, most of the team has put itself into a defensive position. “Bring the Jagdtiger and Jagdpanthers out onto the flanks around Iris!” Griselda calls. Those tanks start moving down.

Hm…

You look out again. What are they planning? They have to attack you frontally. There’s no flanking on this hill. If they try to go around, you’ll just move around to face them. If they attack frontally, they’ll be eaten up by your big guns.

Suddenly, the Italian tanks start moving forward. “I got movement!” Dalia calls out. The Italian tanks move forward, with the rest of their team following behind as well. They’re advancing in force, good, good. You see little muzzleflashes. And suddenly the ground explodes in front of them into… smoke!

“They’re obscuring their advance!” you shout. Great. But at least you know for sure they’re attacking from the front. And they definitely won’t try to drive sideways on the hill. It’s either forward or back.

Hm…

Once they enter extreme range have all tanks begin firing HE into the smoke screen, start from the back and creep it forward. It won't faze the French, but the Genoese will have to try to keep ahead of it and be squeezed forwards, out of the smoke.

“Fire HE towards the back!” All tanks start firing high explosive rounds at the smoke screen. The idea is that the heavy tanks probably won’t be affected. The much lighter Italian tanks though will be. You continue throwing HE rounds out into the smoke screen. One by one by one. Three shots total.

Finally though, the heavies reveal themselves but… not the Italians? Where are they? You scan them again. Wait! They’ve dispersed themselves to the sides now! The 105s to the south and the smaller guns to the north! Devilish bastards. The heavies stop up, then fire off a volley. The hill shakes from the explosions and impact of high explosive rounds.

“Steady,” says Iris.

“This is scary!” yells Elyse. “I really don’t want to be here!”

“They’re coming right at us!” They continue popping their own personal smoke canisters to obscure their advance. But their continued fire along with their own movement forward means it only serves to obscure their sides. The Italian tanks meanwhile-

One round pings against your side armor. “Whoa!” Another round bangs into your turret ring. Their small guns have no chance of penetrating your armor at this range but they can still serve to get your attention! Elyse and Duchess turn their guns on the Genoese, but before they can fire they too receive stunning shots.

“Ah! Our turret is jammed!” screams Elyse.

“Ah! They hit our mantlet!” Duchess yells, a big puff of smoke exploding from their engine block. “Give us a minute!” The same happens on the other side. The Genoese are firing on the southern team, and that gets Lyra and Dalia’s attention immediately. But unlike you, they’re dealing with guns that can actually threaten their armor.

The battle is now joined properly.

Pair off with Duchess, one loads HE with a time fuze, the other AP. First fires at Genoese tank, skipping the round nearby to airburst it and clear the smoke momentarily, second acquires and kills with AP. Instruct Lyra, Dalia, Fogerty and Carver (if she's on the flanks too) to do the same on the other side, pairing off the kill them.

“Duchess, need you!”

“Yeah!” yells Duchess. She coughs loudly. “AAAHHH! I can’t see anything!” Her Jagdpanther turns around.

“I don’t need you to! Just fire an HE shot! Turn, turn!” The Jagdpanther starts traversing around towards the Genoese tanks. “Wait… wait… now!” It fires a shot, exploding off the ground and dispersing the smoke around it. The Genoese tanks scatter, moving back to retreat. You fire a round. It hits one of them, shattering the armor completely.

> KO: ARMIDA TAVARONE (Semovente da 75/18)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Comet I “Oliver”)

The battle is joined thusly. But other than that one shot, the rest of the tanks start reversing backwards, dispersing more smoke. Your trick of firing HE out at them to try and disperse the smoke works, but only on that one. The rest of the Genoese tanks at your side run and hide behind the heavies in the confusion. Despite your locking down of your tank to increase your fire rate, it’s wasted. Those damn Genoese are good.

> KO: HADLEY CARVER (M36 Jackson “Pain Train”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ANGELICA VESPUCCI (Semovente 105/25)

“Aaah! They got us!” yells Hadley.

The heavies fire again, this time smoke shells. It completely envelopes your line, blinding you all. Cheap bastards!

“I can’t see!” yells Serafina. “Where are they!?”

Patience, we've pushed in their flanks now, they've nowhere to go but forward, into us. Take pot shots at the heavies when we get them, but always focus on the tanks furthest to the back, push them forwards, into the centre, soon they'll start being squeezed by our flanking positions like a funnel.

Have Gris commit a couple of the Mediums to the Southern flank (Pz III and M/42 as they won't be much good against the heavies in the center anyway) to push the Genoese back into the center there as well.

You decide to hold position for now. As long as they keep moving forward, you should be fine, right?

The smoke appears to be thinning out for now, but not to the extent where you can see past maybe… 500 meters? Perfectly within brawling distance. Yet, these heavies aren’t designed for that. They’re designed for slugging at long range. Strange how they use their tanks. You notice something though. With the smoke now obscuring your sight, that means you’re also hidden from their view partially…

Which means the Italians have to move up.

And Lyra appears to take advantage of this.

> KO: ANGELICA VESPUCCI (Semovente 105/25)
> KILL CREDITED TO: LYRA CALDWELL (Comet I “Carl”)

“Woohooo!” Lyra cheers out on her flank. She’s collapsing the Genoese on her flank by running out of her defenses! She’s even abandoned her teammates too! “Get some!” The Genoese start reversing back towards the heavy tanks.

> KO: BENNY RODRIGUEZ (Panzer IV Ausf. H “Jose”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: BAILEY D’IBELIN (Panzer V Panther Ausf. G “Arsuf”)

You take another shot at the nearest tank as well. To your surprise, it was a Tiger I.

> KO: HENRIETTE KALDEN (Tiger I “Ibelin”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Comet I “Oliver”)

The heavy tanks appear to realize what’s going on here. They’ve been outflanked at one end. They start speeding up their advance, their engines howling and wailing trying to force them up the slope. It’s either advance or die it seems.

Hold, just a little bit longer, once they're fully committed, then and only then do we break positions and counter-charge.

You keep on sniping from where you are. You’re not quite brave enough to commit to counter-charge just yet but you’re not going to just sit back and let Lyra have all the fun. “Fire!” The new 77mm sings again, sending a shot through the side of a Panther.

Keep the centre where it is or advance slowly, if they charge they put our position at unnecessary risk. The flanks however, that being us, will charge. Casemate TDs head furthest down the hill so they only have enemies to their uphill flank, turreted ones closer to the top. Our main purpose is to cut off their retreat and then crush them against the anvil of our hilltop positions.

“Griselda, wait! Keep everyone in the center! I’ll take the flanks and work our way around!”

“Oh, fine,” says Griselda. “Hold up, girls.” Everyone bemoans the idea of having to wait now. With that in mind, you decide to bring Elyse and Duchess with you. The other flank will have to settle with advancing slowly without Lyra to guide them along. You rush along down the hill, past the wrecks of the Semoventes and down towards the rear. They’re disciplined enough not to turn their tanks to you. But you have to say, this is a sadistic choice. Turn to face you? Or keep running into their guns.

They’ve been duped!

Their shots are inaccurate as they try to rush their way up the hill. They must now realize that this is futile, and you see two of them start to break rank. “There! Attack!” You fire your gun into the engine block of one.

“Right, forget it! We’re going in!” Serafina starts up her tank, rushing out of her fighting pit and moving in. Serina as well follows after her, as do the rest of the reserve mediums.

“Ah, dang it, everybody!” Griselda yells out. “Fine, charge, charge!” The entire center line starts to charge in. Griselda unfortunately pays for this by being sniped in the turret ring. “Ah! What the fuck!?”

Oh, poor Elyse. You shake your head, looking at it. But then you see something out of the corner of your eye. A Panther tries to charge straight at you while you’re distracted by this however. Oh shit-

It explodes, spinning out of control.

It was a smart move by the Joan D’Orleans girls to surrender their important tanks rather than risk them being destroyed and not be available for the flag match. They’ll still be a threat it seems. You, Griselda, and Iris walk along to the camp site. “That charge could’ve lost us the match if their ranks weren’t thinned out,” says Iris. “The girls are getting much too eager for my taste. Just because we’re winning and winning doesn’t mean we can’t be more cautious.”

“Iris is right,” you say. “We have to start reining them in.”

Griselda nods. “I concur. I’ll talk to them tomorrow morning about it. But right now, I don’t want to dampen the mood. I mean-… Look at them!” Griselda smiles, motioning to everybody. They all cheer and dance to their hard won victory. Lyra in particular is jumping up and down at having her first kill in her very first match. Not something a lot of girls can claim to in a large team. “Let’s just let them have tonight.”

Iris frowns. “But-“

“But nothing,” says Griselda. “If they lose tomorrow, it’s on me. We’ll agree on that.” Griselda walks off.

Iris folds her arms, sighing. “I suppose she’s right. I guess there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of fun.”

“Fun yes. Overconfidence, no. Getting cocky is what our opponents did since we lacked a full roster when we faced them. We can’t afford to make those same mistakes. Not so late into the tournament. Who knows what can happen?”

Iris nods. “Indeed.” She sighs, rubbing her face a little. “Regardless, I’m glad today’s match is over. We can move on relatively quickly hopefully. And onto our next opponent.”

You smirk. “Now you’re starting to sound like them.”

“I do not, please. I’m much smarter about it. A lady is not arrogant.” She places her hands on her hips. “Anyway, Elodie. We must remain vigilant. There’s match to be won tomorrow. And we will win it if I have to tear my left arm off and use it to beat the tanks up if I have to.” She steps past you, waving goodbye. “Please do not force that on me, it is a joke.”

“Ha. I get it,” you say. “Good night, Iris.” She nods to you, leaving.

Hm… You do hope the team’s overconfidence isn’t their weakness. You always thought it’d be numbers and disparity between tanks, not the people inside of them. You’ll have to see by tomorrow’s match. Hopefully Griselda will get it through to them. These matches are as must win as the rest.
