Heading into the elevator, you take a deep breath and beging keying in the combination; the very same combination that at least four minutes every single day was assigned to dreading a situation when you'd enter it.

Not that you're delaying or anything, 6 8 1 5 7 1 2 4 4 8 9 9 8 1 2 9 0 4 0.

The elevator closes and locks. The back wall emits a laser, the red light roving over your body before lingering on your eye. Next comes the roof making sure there are no airborne or chemical toxins, a makeshift decontamination chamber.

After all that, finally you feel yourself climbing and climbing. What felt like fifteen minutes was actually closer to two, but you emerge into an office straight out of a noir.

You step out quickly, already launching into your report; "Director I -"

The chair sits under a fan still spinning, an ashtray glows with the almost extinguished flames of a squashed cigarette. An untouched glass of whiskey sits to the side of her desk and a laptop is pushed aside as if awaiting a visitor to speak.

But in the chair itself is The Director. Behind her a window overlooking the countryside, now decorated by a scarlet scatter painting that catches and drinks in the light in a brilliantly macabre backdrop.

Someone blew her head off with a shotgun and now this office is just a dusty old relic of a coffin. It fits honestly. But one thing is certain, the saboteurs are far more powerful than you expected. To get to her? The only person except her who could stand in this room is you...

The magical or psychic traitor could have taken this info from your mind, but holy fuck are you guys screwed.

Walking into the room and checking the corners you take a deep breath and try to stay calm. Okay, so she moves her computer to the side, she was clearly expecting a visitor. Judging by the lift system, she must have thought that it was you,... that whiskey is on "your" side of the table, but you don't drink whiskey...

Well not in company you don't want to fuck.

With a sniff you come to a realization, this is gasoline...

Okay. This is some Sherlock Holmes bullshit, why did she pour gasoline into a glass; because at this point she must have known she was going to die?

If this means something, you don't know what yet... was she a fucking robot or something?

Next up is turning out her pockets...

Walking up behind The Director where she's slumped back in her chair gives you a pleasant view of her neckhole... you can see the aesophagus, a protruding part of spine and all the ragged messes of flesh, bone and blood that emerge from a blast that takes someone's head off.

You've seen and ordered worse done in your job, but looking down someones throat hole the same way you'd look at a pussy makes your lunch turn in your stomach and threaten to come out to play.

So you look up at the cieling and reach into that smoking jacket she loved to wear, feeling about and trying to ignore the smell of shit and piss that you'd normally associate with a five day drug and booze binge's aftermath.

Sucks that you're beginning to relate it with death now.

Nothing. Her pockets are totally empty.

You just signifigantly impacted your ability to get turned on by pussies for jack shit.

Today sucks and you need to get the betting open soon.

You step to the side and look at the desk, massively aware that your time is finite here. You see....

Blank papers.

Every single sheet of paper is fucking blank.

"No." You state dumbly, "Nononononono." You laugh a little hysterically, "This is a fucking joke."

You pick up the four closest sheets and begin looking at them... nothing. Nothing at all except...

Something, seems off about these papers. They're not just blank?

You absolutely suck at spy shit... what the fuck does this mean.

With a sigh you realise that this is probably some freakin' invisible ink spy stuff. The question is; what will reveal it?

Wax?

Probably not, she'd need to have some method of revealing it?

Light or Blacklight?

You hold it up to the flickering lamp and all you can make out is that this papaer is coated in this ink.

Heat?

Walking over to the desk, looking at the glass of gasoline she poured... that's got to be it right? With a lighter, you ignite the whiskey glass into a mini version of a barrel flame and hold the paper closer to it.

Instead of the ink revealing however, the page goes up in flame... Smelling vaguely of cinammon, you drop the paper on the desk and see a series of eight digit codes; each one having a function listed beside it.

At the top the paper reads :

FAO My Successor, James Henderson

Say what you want about her, at least she had redundancies... guess you're Director now.

You get in the lift again, realizing that you'll need to somehow clean this shit up if you're ever going to use that office to be The Director.

But you can't let anyone know about that place existing or the code to get in... in fact, if someone implies they know the Director has an office - then that's a smoking gun surely.

"James where the fuck are you going and where the fuck were you?" C455 says from all around the lift.

"Got to go to my room real quick." You answer looking up, "Wait what do you mean where did I go?"

She appears in hologram form, "You were off my map, your phone wasn't sending a signal and after getting in the lift your trackers just stopped sending." She looks fucking pissed with you, "Now I don't care how bad you need your tampons..." The elevator stops going down and goes up, "You're going to get this damn ritual started now, do your fucking job."

"Hey C455. Has anyone else disapeared lately?" You ask with growing dread.

"It'll take me some time but I can find out who disapeared in the last three hours." She says eventually, "Look, are you going to actually tell me what's going on?"

"Yeah. Just need to get today done first C455." With a slow exhalation you admit something, "Not sure if we're going to do it this time."

"We might not." C455 says matter of factly, "But are you going to be a bitch and give up; or get your balls from your purse and flip the bird to these saboteur pieces of shit?"

"You're right." Damn, C455 knows you far too well, you doubt anyone else could have spoken to you like -

DING

The siding doors do what is said on the tin and reveal the lobby, where the entire staff look on dumbfounded as you stroll out with a huge grin; straight from death to stand amongst them all.

You are James Fucking Henderson and you're back. Time to let them know.

Walking up the stairs with aorund four hundred pairs of eyes on you, you look at the board with a thoughtful pose for a second before turning back to your captive audience, "I am James Fucking Henderson. And I.Am.Back." You proclaim to uprorias cheers, taking two overly draatic bows.

"Ladies and Gentleman.... and Jerry. Letttttttssssss gettttt reaaaadyyyyyy tooooo murderrrrrrrrr!" With a flourish you put your name down, Henson's name down and Jess's name down on the betting squares.

Short and sweet this year, but looks like you've sucessfully raised morale.

Jesus doesn't have shit on you.

I was running a Terry Pratchett inspired homebrew. System is so very rules light that all rolls are weighted coin tosses. 11-20 pass. 1-9 fail. 10 reroll.

I ran 3 at a time because someone on the discord jokingly suggested it when I couldn't decide what quest to run.

I'm not sure I'll do more than 2 ever again. It's useful for WCN and Last Stand because those are fairly quick and light hearted, but this is a fuck huge mystery intrigue complex system with character nuance and subtle hints & stuff.

I don't think Cabin or Starborn can be ran in conjunction. It results in burnout a bit, which is why I think I'm unwilling to rewrite all that fucking setting and dialogue again.

Apologies, but like i said - happy to do Q&A.

You fall into step with Henson as you walk down the stairs that lead to the lobby floor, trusting Jess and her picked assistant to handle the human press and chaos of the betting board, when you both make it to a cleared section of the floor you address your colleague, "Ensign Henson, you have the bridge." You say in a horrible Shatner impersonation. "I've got shit to attend to."

"I'd think you'd respect Maxi enough to call her more than shit James." He tuts, getting on his little buggy that he uses to get around the floors.

"Look, I know I'm a manwhore. But we're both aware of what the real issue is." Is all the defence you muster as he turns the key.

"I know. Unlike you I thought discretion might be our strategy."

He looks disapointed in you as he pulls out with his little red light flashing. Honestly, you fucking suck at this intrigue and Sherlock Holmes shit, so why does everyone think you're going to know what to do and masterfully pull off the greatest counter espionage in the history of humanity.

Oh right, you're the boss. That means you're amazing at everything.

Fuck.
