You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were in a bit of a situation.

You had started off the night by raiding a camp of Elven bandits who had been preying on adventurers and travelers in the area. Things had started off well enough. The bandits were caught completely by surprise and their whole camp was aflame courtesy of Nino's magic.

However, despite cutting your way through several of the bandits, you've run into a Forest Warden, essentially the Elven equivalent of a knight. However, instead of the steel armor Humans and Dwarves favored, Forest Wardens were instead sheathed in a shell of ancient, magical wood. While not nearly as sturdy as steel, Elven wood was still tough for its extremely light weight and had a great deal of magical properties.

And now the great wooden beast was staring you down, the eyeslits glowing with sickly pale moonlight. Grasped in its arms was a long, wooden spear, seemingly crafted out of strands of wood bound and twisted together incredibly tight into a single, sharp point.

The grip on your halberd tightens. A worthy foe has appeared!

The burning camp, the fleeing bandits. All becomes secondary as you focus your attention on the Forest Warden, the both of you carefully gauging each other.

Meanwhile, Nino continues to lob fireballs at the camp and at the scattered bandits. However, one motions and you could have her start attacking the Forest Warden as well...

You decide this will be decided by single combat, as it traditionally has been in the olden days. This was your mandate as a Templar Champion, after all.

You ready your halberd, while the Forest Warden readies its spear. Attacking would be an issue, since that spear certainly had a longer reach than your halberd. However, if you could get in close, the long weapon would be effectively useless...

Like a flash, the Forest Warden thrusts its spear directly at you, but you've drilled enough to know how to react to such an attack. It's why you've kept your halberd close to you so you could react quickly, using it like a club to bat the spear tip away in an almost perfectly timed parry, leaving the Forest Warden open to a follow up attack.

You could try a heavy overhead slam with the blunt end of your halberd, a thrust with the spear point into the center of your target, or sweep the legs with a low swing with the axe end.

You weren't too sure how sturdy Forest Warden armor was to mundane weaponry, though...

You land a solid hit on the side of the Forest Warden's leg like a logger chopping down a tree, and you can feel the axe edge bite into its wooden armor. However, you can already tell that your strike hadn't fully cut through like you had intended.

The Forest Warden meanwhile attempts to retaliate, releasing one hand from its lance and raising it in the air. You can already see the wood on its fingers shifting to form a series of sharp looking claws.

Your halberd was still stuck into the leg armor, meaning you'd have to spend your time to pull it out, or make this a hand to hand affair...

You try to aim a punch in on the Forest Warden, but the Elf is just a bit faster than you, it's clawed hand slamming into your helmet. The sound of nails screeching across steel piercing your ears, and the sheer impact jostles you. Fortunately, you're just able to twist away from the strike, using your leftover momentum to spin around and recover your halberd before rolling away.

Your vision is still a bit blurred from the head impact, but you also notice that the Forest Warden is moving with a bit of a limp, so you both had at least scored some damage against each other.

The Forest Warden then makes the next move, tossing away its spear and opening up its palms. A pair of curved short swords quite literally grow out of its hands, and the Forest Warden takes a new fighting stance.

Clever bastard. That was some pretty handy magic right there. With those two curved blades, that Forest Warden was no doubt going to take the offensive to leverage the quicker strike ability of those light weapons. But it would be trading away the reach and power that its spear had.

It was unwise to let the Forest Warden recover the initiative. You again ready your halberd in an offensive stance, pointing the spear tip directly at the Forest Warden before charging forward. With that hurt leg, there was no way it could run away from you.

You and the Forest Warden charge at one another, weapons raised and poised to strike.

However, neither of you meet or clash blades.

There's a sudden flash of light, and all you realize afterwords is seeing the world spinning around you as you hurtle through the sky, flames licking at the edges of your vision. Thankfully, you manage to sufficiently brace yourself for the inevitable impact on the ground with a loud WHUMP.

Pain explodes all throughout your body, your armor simply unable to absorb the sheer force of your fall. Your smoldering halberd lands just a few feet from you.

Grunting in pain and discomfort, you try to get yourself back up to your feet. You spy the Forest Warden, its wood armor now lit alight with flame as it flees for the safety of the forest.

To your right, you could see Solana flying in on a pair of golden wings, her hands glowing like suns as she prepares healing spells for you.

The pain is still not going away. You're not sure what's broken and what's not, but you could at least still move...

You entire body feels like its burning as you force your bruised and torn muscles to move. Well, your body actually was literally burning from the fire, but that wasn't the point. However, despite all of the willpower you pour into your efforts, it's simply not enough. Your spirit was still bound a frail human body after all, and your legs give out from under you as you fall the ground for a second time.

"Are you trying to kill yourself!?" Solana yells at you like a disappointed mother as she drops down next to you, her prepared healing spells firing off. "Just hold still and this will be over-"

You point to where the Forest Warden is escaping.

"If you're going to focus on anything, focus on me!" Solana snaps as she conks your helmet with her staff. "You're in condition to be moving! In fact I'm surprised that you're even still conscious!"

You wave the surrounding area. It's not secure-

"There's nobody left. All the bandits are either down or fled." Solana reassures you as she continues to channel Sol's healing light into your body. It was a nice, nostalgic sensation. After all your training as a neophyte was hardly injury free.

You then point to the fire, wondering just what the hell that explosion was.

"Well..." Solana pauses, unsure of what to say.

"I'M SORRRRRRRY!" Nino wails as she tackles you in a hug. She didn't have nearly enough strength or mass to knock you over, but the shock did temporarily disrupt the work of the healing magic, causing your suppressed pain to flare up again. Thankfully, your helmet hid your discomfort.

"I... I saw that you were having trouble and I w-wanted to help." Nino sniffs. "B-but I guess my aim was off and I kinda rushed the cast so I put too much power in it..."

Solana doesn't say anything, continuing her healing and staying clear of whatever was between you and the little mage.

Well, you couldn't really stay mad at Nino, and she had apparently realized that she had made a mistake, so there wasn't really any point in reinforcing that against her.

You reach a singed arm out and pat Nino on the head before giving her a warning point with your finger cautioning her not to repeat such a mistake.

"It won't happen again! I promise!" Nino wails as she hugs you tighter.

"Hey!"

You turn to see Morgan and Valentia dashing towards you. Valentia was all bruised and scuffed, her armor sporting some new dents, scratches, and bloodstains. Otherwise, she looked relatively unhurt. Morgan was practically unscathed, no doubt fighting from a well concealed position.

"Are you all right?" Morgan asks, the concern clear in her crystal blue eyes.

You give her a thumbs up.

"A number of bruises and fractures, but nothing Sol's light cannot fix." Solana sighs. "And I see you're all right, Sweetie!"

"Moooooooom!" Valentia groans in embarrassment.

"Anyways, I think we've gotten pretty much all of the bandits." Morgan concludes as she surveys the burning camp around you. "I know a few slipped away, but I doubt they have the numbers to really set up an organized group again."

"So, are we done here, then?" Nino asks.

"Either way, your Templar here will need somewhere safe to fully recover." Solana tuts.

You turn your head to Romulus, who simply sniffs and nods.

Well, that was that, then.

Now was the manner in which to make Naru and Solana finally meet.

You put a finger up to the "lips" of your helmet, telling Solana that you will try to sneak her into the Monastery without Naru catching wind.

"Yeah! I can just cast a simple cloak spell and you'll be good to go!" Nino beams.

"A cloak spell is pretty high level magic." Morgan frowns.

"Easy enough for me!" Nino boasts.

"Naru will probably be there to greet us." Morgan nods. "Despite how crusty and grumpy she is, she's stayed on with us for a reason."

"Well just hold still for a second aaaaaaand, ta da!" Nino waves her hand and Solana fades out from view, only a thin outline of her figure visible.

"Not quite perfect..." Valentia frowns.

"Well, perfect invisibility is impossible!" Nino shrugs. "At least for now! But this should be enough that Naru wouldn't suspect!"

You nod confidently and start marching off towards the gates. The watchers on duty see your approach and open the gates wide for you. As expected, Havel and Naru are already there, ready to greet you.

"Oh, still alive, I see." Naru grunts as she looks around. "So, uh, Solana ain't around here, is she?

You shake your head.

"Really..." Naru narrows her eyes.

You warily watch as Solana's faded figure glides past Havel and Naru's gaze.

"You really think the Templar would lie to you?" Nino asks accusingly.

"O-of course not." Naru shakes her head. "Well get your asses in here! Hopefully you at least got some good loot off those Elves!"

"Well, that's a funny story there..." Nino laughs nervously.

"Nino blew it all up." Morgan shrugs. "Collateral damage."

"Nino..." Naru glowers at the mage. "You can't loot anything if you keep liberally cooking it with your magic!"

You cross your arms sternly. Was she really going to lecture Nino when she wasn't even at the battle herself?

"W-well, it's an important life lesson applicable to all situations!" Naru stammers.

You shake your head and point to Nino. She had done a lot of hard work on this quest, so she deserved an apology.

"Fiiiiiiiine. I'm sorry for getting mad at ya, squirt." Naru sighs.

And that's when you could see Solana getting into position behind Naru...

You do not bother trying to warn Naru about Solana's sneak attack. She deserved everything she was about to receive, after all.

"Naruuuuuu!" Solana squeals as she grabs her fellow cleric from behind, wrapping her up in a tight but friendly hug. "It's been so long!'

"AAAAHHHHHHH!" Naru yelps, but it's too late for her to attempt anything like an escape. "What are you doing here? HOW did you get here, Sola!?!"

"Honestly, you disappear for years. No letters, no visits, no attempt at communication!" Solana tuts. "It's almost as if you're trying to avoid me or something!"

"BECAUSE I AM!" Naru wails

Morgan and Valentia look on with bemused looks. You figure Valentia was in a good mood because for once it wasn't her being bullied in the spotlight. Nino is just cracking up along with Romulus, while Havel just stands there confused.

"You. YOOUUUU!" Naru manages to point an accusing finger at you. "This was your doing' wasn't it?"

You nod confidently. You weren't going to hide anything about it.

"Fuck yoooouuuuu!" Naru wails.

"Come on, Naru, there's simply SO MUCH we have to catch up on!" Solana giggles as she starts dragging Naru away. "Oh Havel, you don't happen to have a place we can just sit down and talk? Maybe have a few drinks?"

"I believe the main hall shall suffice." Havel says, probably not sure what else to do.

"Templar, you're free to join us too, if you want!" Solana grins.

"Nooooooo." Naru wails.

You nod eagerly. Drinks didn't sound too bad. In fact, it would probably do quite a bit to dull the still great pain throbbing throughout your body.

"Excellent!' Solana grins as she pulls Naru along. "Let us go, then!"

"I'll make sure Nino gets to bed." Morgan says.

"I think I'll just watch the gate, or something." Valentia mumbles, eager to stay free and clear of all of the imminent shenanigans. Probably a smart move on her part.

You accompany both Solana and Naru to the main hall, where the serfs have already prepared numerous flagons of mead and wine. Typical celebratory beverages.

Well, you did have some reason to celebrate today, at least.

"To reunions!" Solana says happily as she raises a flagon.

"Ah fuck it, might as well." Naru groans as she grabs one for herself.

You raise your own flagon to return the toast.

It was some very good mead, which you thankfully are able to tolerate rather well, despite your injured condition.

And the night was spent with the two clerics mostly just catching up on lost time, with Solana recounting the many exploits she's gone though as one of the head clerics of the Church, and Naru reluctantly spinning tales of her own little misadventures as she went from job to job. Seemed like the two were rather tight together back in the day.

Made you wonder what happened that convinced Naru so split off from the church as a semi-disgraced cleric.

However, you eventually do feel dizzy and tipsy from all of the mead you had drunk, and you begin to peacefully doze off. Perhaps tomorrow...
