YEA RWBY QUEST. We are going to get waifus and headpat Imoutos, and we have plenty of both.
>>
You duck behind a tree to try and catch your breath. You thought she was your friend, but Ruby was merciless. As if some horrible, alien intelligence had taken her body and she sat screaming behind her own eyes, helpless to stop her hands as they moved in for the kill. You poke your head around the trunk to catch sight of her, but a flash of red is all you see before a high caliber round digs into the bark and you’re forced to duck again.

It had only been a few days since your argument with Blake, and Ruby had changed so quickly from an excitable little girl into the monster that haunted you now. You weren’t sure what to expect when she invited you here, but this wasn’t it.

Another flash and she’s swept in front of you. The sniper rifle levels towards your head, and she pulls the trigger. You can barely make out the ground rushing up to meet your ruined eyes before it’s washed away in a sea of blood. The blood pools and shifts, eventually forming into words: “YOU DIED”

“Man, speed power ups are cheap.” That’s the third time in a row she’s killed you this match. “They are not!” Ruby protests, “Do you have any idea how hard it is to aim when you’re going that fast?”

“That’s not a problem when you stop dead to line up a shot!” This is why you insisted on no power ups, but “My Room My Rules” trumped any logical debates you put forward. Ruby gives you nothing but a smug grin and a laugh, but the expression settles into something more genuine.

“Thanks for coming over, Whitaker. Yang only likes fighting games, Jaune’s TERRIBLE, and Ellie’s never here.”

“Ellie? Liquorice?” It’s the only person she could be talking about, and she nods, “Yeah, Yang started calling her that, cause of her letter on the team, and it seems to have stuck.” Ruby stalls a bit after bringing up her team. She doesn’t seem as happy as she had been only a second ago. Did something happen in RYAL?

Volume 3 Spoilers

Holy fuck! I just got to Roman's Death
>>
>>1689737
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmDakhg45rk
>>
>>1689734
if we actually put effort into interacting with her, and get good roles in doing so, getting her on our side isnt impossible. itll be hard, but def not impossible.
>>
>>1689768
I dunno, she's pretty devoted to Roman. We'd have to convert him first and I just dont see that happening at all.
>>
>>1689770
anythings possible when the dice gods are on your side. also our mc's a pretty good dude
>>
>>1689768
A sure-fire way to win Neo's friendship is to kill an innocent person by stabbing them.

Since we're still in volume 1, the shadow people haven't been culled yet. We can kill one of them.
>>
To be fair to the "convert Neo" group, IIRC we never actually learn Neo's motivation for being a criminal.

I don't know how successful trying to turn her will be but I'd be willing to try.
>>
>>1689784
you never know if you dont try
>>
>>1689770
If you want to change someone's mind, you have to attack their motivation for doing what you don't want them to do, then create one to serve your interest. So, what's Roman's motivation for helping Cinder?
>>
>>1689787
Getting close to her works for me even if we can't turn her, namely, creating an interesting development for our character.
>>
>>1689789
He's scared of Salem and her minions, and thinks that by helping her he's on the winning side.
>>
>>1689799
so to turn roman is making salem/her minions seem not scary?
>>
>>1689799
>>1689803
Obviously we should just get Salem to join our side
>>
>>1689803
That'd be my plan if I were going to try it. "How?" is a bit beyond me.
>>
>>1689799
He's scared of Cinder, odds on he knew nothing about Salem.
>>
>>1689806
im in, if for the hilarity of an instant death early on
>>
>>1689803
Sure thing. We just need to make Whitaker seem more terrifying and powerful than Salem, and then Roman and Neo will become our pals. Hooray!
>>
>>1689807
Well, that and make it look like Salem/Cinder will lose.
>>1689808
That's also a pretty good possibility, and much easier to handle.
>>
I mean, alternatively we can make ourselves seem Scarier than Salem/Cinder
>>
>>1689814
Grimm Overlord Quest?
>>
>>1689815
Not likely.
>>
>>1689815
We already had ne of those in /trash/.
It became smut after like 3 posts.
>>
>>1689819
I mean, we dont gotta be evil, we just gotta spook the shit outta Roman, just a ton of OP goons in front of him, and turning him/Neo might be a cinch
>>
>>1689814
So what you're saying is, after we find out it was Cinder's idea to kill Penny, we unleash all our bottled rage and brutally murder Cinder.
>>
You know who we should really be worrying about converting? Jaune, I'm telling you guys that kids pure evil.
>>
>>1689820
Any archives for... research.
>>
>>1689808
>>1689813
Actually, his dialogue when he's fighting Ruby makes it pretty clear he's aware that Cinder is a part of something bigger. A few times, he refers to "the people" he's working for and is afraid of. "People", plural.

He's obviously not talking about Emerald and Mercury, he messes them around to their faces. So he must know that Cinder is a part of something bigger or he would just say "this woman". He may not know about Salem specifically, but he knows there's a bigger faction at play.
>>
>>1689823
I'd be down. Imagine how crazy we get to the point that we aren't flinching from attacks anymore.
>>
>>1689821
That's true, like >>1689808 pointed out, it's not likely you have to compete against Salem. And the Schnees DO have a lot of weight to throw around. I suppose it's possible, but getting there is a trip. If you guys do get there.
>>1689826
That makes me question what exactly Cinder showed him to scare him into line.
>>
>>1689815
That's not how you spell Jaune, that devious secret agent.
>>
>>1689826
He may know about Watts, Tyrion and forgetable but I doubt Cinder told him about the goddess queen of the Grimm.
>>1689825
One VERY lewd greentext that I won't post out of fear of being banned.
>>
>>1689831
>That makes me question what exactly Cinder showed him to scare him into line.
She does threaten him with her fire powers once. Not sure how she got him scared of Salem's group, though. But all know that RWBY can skip over those sorts of details, sometimes.

>>1689824
>>1689835
What if QM pulls a fast one, and actually makes Jaune an undercover agent? We'd never see it coming.

...Fuck, now I'm getting paranoid. This is what being Whitaker does to you, I guess.

Jaune's seven sisters are the seven branches of Mistral Intelligence (MI).

>>1689671
It’s obvious she’s upset about something. Was there an argument within her team? You knew what that felt like. Your sympathy pulls at you, and you have to come out and ask, “Do you want to talk about it, Ruby?”

She jumps, but slaps together a strained smile. “What’s there to talk about?,” she lies, “I mean, it’s not that bad of a nickname!” If Ruby had done that on a stage, you would’ve called it comedy, but right now it worries you. If she didn’t want to talk about it, though, you probably shouldn’t push her.

“I was talking about reopening negotiations for the removal of these stupid power ups!” You fake turning your scrutiny back to the game. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Ruby relax, and the two of you return to your competition.

“Not a chance! They’re part of the game, you can’t just rip out mechanics like that!” You do noticeably better over the next few rounds, and you can’t help but wonder if it’s because she wants you to stop complaining or if her mind is somewhere else.

(CONTINUED)
>>
I'm pretty neutral on Yang personally, although imoutoing Ruby would be very cute. Obviously I'm not going to try and sabotage votes if she wins though.

(THE NEXT DAY)

SPWB had been to a few different combat classes over the past few days. Most, like Ms. Goodwitch’s sparring class, took place inside interior arenas the entire class sat around. Professor Port’s second class, “Team Combat”, took place in a relatively safe section of the Emerald Forest, whichever part of it happened to be mostly free of Grimm when the class loaded into the Bullheads.

“Today, you youngsters will be sharpening your coordination tactics! I know, I know, some of you have already demonstrated talent in this area,” Port says, with what you may have imagined being a pointed look at your team, “but talent is useless unless it is honed into a skill, and honing a skill comes only through practice!”

He points a dramatic finger into the air and lists your objectives, “Our reports claim that several Beowolf packs have been spotted around this area recently. You will be scored on how many of these packs you manage to clear before the end of our session today!” That sounded pretty easy.

“But it isn’t all that straightforward, oh no!” Damn, teach you to be optimistic. He continues, “Kills shall only be counted if at least two members of a team contributed to its demise! You begin in three minutes! Take this time to set out your strategy.”

The girls look to you expectantly. You’ve got this. You think. After all, its situations like this that got you selected as the leader.

>A) Split up and cast a wide net, Beowolves are child’s play.
>B) Stick together and mow down the packs quicker.
>C) (Write in!)

Sticking together was the entire point of this class! If you aren’t going to practice as a cohesive whole, you might as well go home. But where will everyone be most effective?

You should…

>A) Take the lead and initiate, forcing the Beowolves to focus on you while the rest cut them apart.
>B) Hang back and finish off any Beowolves your team leaves open for you with your rifle.
>C) Focus on setting up for the others with your semblance.

Penny…

>A) Needs to be the powerhouse. Place her - and her swords - in the middle and let the team dance around her.
>B) Should repeat her last performance as a distraction and peel off any non-Beowolf Grimm who come to distract you from the mission.
>C) Has incredible multitasking skills. She should focus on injuring as many Beowolves as possible and let the rest worry about killing them.

Weiss…

>A) Is a born flanker. Keep her on the outside, darting in and out for opportunities that the team provides.
>B) Should set up kills with her Semblance.
>C) Needs to use her Dust expertise to corral the Grimm into one area.

And Blake…

>A) Is the perfect scout. She should find Beowolf packs and either lead them into the fight or lead the team to them when there’s no fight to join.
>B) Can keep the Beowolves focused on her without much risk, thanks to her semblance.
>C) Should move between the battlefield and stab them in the back.

It's quite obvious that Jaune is a God of Chaos masquerading as a Secret Agent who's pretending to be a inept huntsman.
It's why we must make sure that whatever evil plan he's got in store be stopped in it's crib.

Take the lead and initiate, forcing the Beowolves to focus on you while the rest cut them apart.

Has incredible multitasking skills. She should focus on injuring as many Beowolves as possible and let the rest worry about killing them.

Should set up kills with her Semblance.

Is the perfect scout. She should find Beowolf packs and either lead them into the fight or lead the team to them when there’s no fight to join.

You’ve taken almost half your allotted time to come up with a plan, and the girls are beginning to look worried. Just as you begin to sweat, it all clicks into place. You’re able to speak with confidence as you give your team their orders.

“Weiss, you and Penny will be working together to keep the Beowolves off of their game. Use your semblance to keep them in place. Penny, don’t worry about whether or not you land a kill, just hit as many of them as you can.” The two nod at you. Penny looks to Weiss for something, but Weiss focuses on loading more Ice Dust into Myrtenaster and ignores her teammate.

“Blake, scout out the area. If we’re in a fight, bring any small packs or lone wolves you find towards us. If the fight dies down, point us at the next group.” She narrows her eyes at you. “Where are you going to be?” she asks. You shrug in response, “Someone needs to actually kill the things.” You look between the three of them and notice something that puts you on edge. Blake is glaring at you, Weiss is glaring at her, and Penny is looking between the two of them, at a loss for what to do or say.

“TIME!” Port’s voice cuts through the tension, and the four of you dash into the forest, any tensions forgotten. For the moment.

The first pack Blake finds is pitifully small. Only three Beowolves are mulling about in the clearing, and your master plan doesn’t even get a chance to be put into action before they fall. Several skirmishes pass before you find a large enough group. The pack is nearly thirty Beowolves strong, which should be enough for Blake to lead more in before it’s over.

Blake disappears into the trees as you charge the group, letting out an overly dramatic battle cry to get their attention. Penny and Weiss are right behind you, and the three of you soon settle into an uneasy rhythm. Penny’s blades carve chunks out of the Beowolves that Weiss freezes in place, but your grandstanding and wide swinging keeps the bulk of the pack on you. You only know Blake is doing her job when the second pack crests a nearby hill and joins the fray.

The added pressure forces your group to focus up, and the tentative steps become a well-orchestrated dance. You don’t think you’d ever shattered this many frozen Grimm before, even during Winter’s mass combat exercises. The record climbs higher and higher as the fight carries on, and then a Beowolf’s claws bite into your aura from behind. You can’t help but let out a surprised shout, and the offending Grimm is quickly stabbed through the eye by Weiss.

“Are you alright?” You don’t answer, because the pain wakes you up from the daze you had fallen into and you notice exactly how many Beowolves surround you. No wonder one hand landed a hit, you could hardly see the grass beneath them all! You, Weiss and Penny are slowly forced to back into one another and abandon the plan. There simply isn’t enough space to safely separate anymore, and with the constant pressure, there’s no chance for you and Weiss to set up for the move you used the last time you were in trouble with a pack. What do you do now?

>A) Rely on your team. “Penny, please tell me you’ve got something to clear them out!”

You’ve got no answers for this, and you don’t think Weiss will either. Blake’s out of your reach for now, so there’s only one place you can look to for help. “Penny!” you shout, dodging another swipe at your neck, “Please tell me you’ve got something to clear them out!”

Penny hesitates for a moment and is nearly skewered by a Beowolf’s claws. Weiss cuts the creature’s arm off at the elbow before berating Penny, “Pay attention!” The girl’s swords return to the melee as if she never stopped, and she finally answers you.

“I believe I have something, but-” You cut her off before she can make her point.

“We don’t have time for ‘buts’! Whatever it is, DO IT!” Penny nods with apprehension and draws her swords into a circle in front of her.

“Whatever happens,” she says, “stay behind me!” It’s all the warning you get before a green light blinds the forest behind you and you hear a monstrously loud humming sound. Despite everything, you can’t stop yourself from turning. Penny’s sword circle is firing an absolutely MASSIVE laser into the crowd of Beowolves, and she’s beginning to turn towards you. You’ve completely forgotten about her instructions, so instincts alone force you into moving out of the way and to the safest place in the soon-to-be clearing: Right behind Penny.

You and Weiss defend her from behind, but the fight is token. Most of the wolves hesitate at the sight, and before their murderous instincts can take hold of them, they’re blown away. When it’s over, all that’s left of the Grimm are rapidly evaporating piles of ash.

You and Weiss don’t say a word. You’d like to think that you were both trying to catch your breath, but the truth was that you had no response to what you had just seen. The scene remained perfectly unchanging for a few moments before Blake broke through the treeline with your shocked expression on her face.

“What was that?!” Her words snap Weiss out of her trance, and your sister angrily stalks forward with a snarl. “Yes, what was that!? You must have lead HUNDREDS of those things here! They nearly KILLED all of us!”

Her aggression puts Blake on the defensive. “I was doing my job! Unless I misheard him, that job was ‘bring Beowolves here!’”

This is getting out of hand, fast!

>A) Take the blame. “It’s my fault! I made a bad call and didn’t think everything through!”
>B) Defend Blake. “She couldn’t have known we were getting overrun, Weiss, we didn’t have any way of telling her!”
>C) Stay out of it. Stopping them before didn’t help, maybe they’ll get it out of their systems.
>D) Redirect, you can assign blame later. “Are you two serious?! Forget about that! Penny, how did you DO that!”

We should phrase it as a learning experience about communication instead of 'this was a bad idea/bad call'. Ironing out hiccups like this (forgetting you can communicate with your team) are the point of teambuilding exercises in the first place

Points are not important. Team building is important. As long as we walk away from this with some good lessons about communication and keeping our eye on the goal then who gives a shit about the grade.

But like if we want to get really semantic Blake lured them all into a nice tidy package for the Penny deathlaser. "Luring them all into one place so our high power team members can kill them quickly and efficiently" sounds like 'contributing to their demise' to me.
>>

3d100 is fine. It's a classic, the curve is just right for the quest format.

5d100 basically guarantees that every roll will be extremely high, so the DC range that the QM can use actually becomes more limited. Not to mention that chances are, bias will mean that the difficulty wouldn't actually change much, so if anything things would feel even worse.
>>
>>1691163
Port's a bit of a fop in canon, but the man is a Professor at one of the top schools in the world and has kicked griffon ass off screen, and those guys proved too much for the MC. I choose to believe he's good at his job, he just has quirks.
>>
>>1691133
Star: d20 rolled by players with QM rolling a d10 to select a roll to use based on last digit of post number. 20s outside of the selected roll add 2 to result, 1s subtract 2.

Monster: d20 with QM rolling 1d3 to select used roll from the first 3
>>
>>1691185
Wow, that sounds like utter garbage.
>>
>>1691198
It sucks 95% of the time. Occasionally you get a great set of rolls and can tear shit up, like getting a result over 30 with mods and pluses in Star vs but most of the time you end up being randomly bad at tasks you should be proficient at.

Of course the true patrician choice for systems are dice pools but I have seen maybe 4 quests ever that use them.

>capcha HAMBURGO TARRAGON

>>
>>1691274

>>
>>1691274
Seems like most rolls would end up mediocre?

The one system I truly hate and is used by a fairly well known QM is 5d20 with crits. It is so random none of the choice really matter since you will either fail horribly or completely demolish any task you have to roll for, no matter how you chose to approach it.

You have to step in. You’re the leader of this team, and if anything goes wrong for them, it’s your responsibility. “Guys!” Your voice cuts through the building argument, and everyone stops to look at you. You gesture to yourself as you explain, “It’s my fault. I made a bad call. I sent Blake out on her own with no way to contact the rest of us.”

Your words hang in the air for a moment before Weiss throws her hands up. “How is that what you take away from this?!” she asks. You and Blake are stunned, but Blake is quick to throw herself back into the argument.

“What is that supposed to mean?! How am I supposed to know when you’re having problems if no one tells me!” Weiss pretends to think about it for a moment, putting a finger to her chin. “Hmm, that’s a good question, Blake,” she says, before letting her real anger back into her voice, “Maybe next time, you could try LOOKING AT THE FIGHT!?”

They’re back at each other’s throats, and you don’t have any other ideas to stop them. You’re trying to come up with something when a familiar voice booms from further in the trees, “Poor communication skills!”

The two of them grow quiet again as Professor Port steps into sight. “Insufficient logistical foresight!” You flinch. Those were clearly referring to you, but he continues, “Inciting arguments! Ignoring a leader’s tactical reevaluations!” This time he’s clearly looking at Weiss, and she seems abashed. She can’t meet his eyes, but Port isn’t done yet.

“Failure to reaffirm team status! Refusing to reassess your actions!” Blake steps back towards the rest of you, and soon the entirety of Team SPWB is in position for the scolding. “And finally!” he bellows, and Penny takes a half step, hoping to position herself behind you.

“Disregarding the entire point of this exercise to handle things yourself!” You feel a pang of guilt. You had ordered Penny to do that. You open your mouth to point it out, but Professor Port holds up a hand to preemptively silence you.

“Believe or not, ladies and gentleman, but these are not the worst issues I have seen today. It is clear that none of you are used to working together. It is to be expected, but here at Beacon, you are also expected to perform to a level many would find unreasonable. I trust that, when we next have this exercise, you will not repeat these mistakes.” A chorus of quiet “yes sir”s are the only responses you have.

Professor Port turns to lead you back to the Bullheads, and thus back to Beacon, but Weiss can’t hold herself back from asking, “Sir? What was our grade on this assignment?”

The man seems to consider the question a moment before answering, “Grade? What grade? I specifically remember saying that you were to be scored, I don’t remember anything about a grade.”

No one says anything else, so you decide to bite the bullet and ask, “So, what was our score?”

He chuckles to himself before answering, “Well, I’ll have to go through the footage to check. It’s up to some interpretation, you understand, but with Ms. Belladonna leading the packs to a single area, it could be argued that all the Beowolves Ms. Polendina finished with her impressive assault count to your score. If that ends up being the case, I’d say that puts you around… Maybe three hundred ahead of the next group?”

Just gotta say, you've really done a good job at capturing the feel of the show here. The party argument is very in-keeping with the tone, and the characters are being consistent. Too many QMs make the mistake of having every character be more reasonable than they should be in an attempt to 'fix' what they see as pointless conflict, but you've hit an ideal middle ground.

Slightly random praise, sorry, but I felt like I should say it.

You’re in your dormitory and continuing your book. It’s after classes, and the hallway outside is silent. It’s unusually quiet inside as well. All of your teammates claimed to have somewhere to be after the dressing down Port gave you all. It’s clear that none of them were feeling particularly great after that display, despite your high kill count. They knew what the lesson had really been about, and if it HAD been for a grade, it would’ve been a miserable failure.

You wonder if a similar situation had happened the day before, between Team RYAL. Ruby had seemed upset, despite her refusal to share the burden with you. Thoughts about your fellow team leader turned to thoughts about Ciel. You had barely heard anything about how she was taking to Team CNRP, and leading one of the most promising Huntresses of a generation. Just as you were beginning to wonder, your scroll beeped with a message. The number displayed was Ciel’s (which you had obtained from Penny, in case of emergencies relating to your teammate that Ciel would be better equipped to handle). The message was a brief three sentences:

“Are you free? Want to talk. Can later.” You open the reply box and think about what to say…

>A) “Sorry, got SPWB stuff.” Your team isn’t feeling great, maybe you should find one of them to cheer up. (Say which)
>B) “Can’t, meeting up with Ruby.” If she’s having trouble with her team as well, it’d be a good idea to talk to her. A problem shared is a problem halved.
>C) “Sure, where at?” This is the first time Ciel’s reached out to talk to you. It doesn’t seem important, but maybe the most important thing isn’t what she has to say, it’s showing up.

“Sure,” you type, “Where at?” You don’t have to wait long before the response. “Ballroom, from the first night. It’s empty.” You set your book aside and lazily carry yourself there. The moonlight is enough to see by, and the halls of Beacon are comfortably silent. Most teams are sleeping, you suspect. Once you find the ballroom, it is, like the halls, lit with an eerie blue light that shines through the windows. Ciel is standing at attention, observing something outside. As she said, the room is totally abandoned save for the two of you.

You walk towards her, and the sounds of your shoes is enough to alert her to your presence. “Whitaker,” she says, as stiff and formal as if she were here for a bunk inspection. So much for that tiny voice in the back of your mind teasing you about how romantic the set up had been. It sounded a bit like Weiss, now that you thought about it. No skin off your nose, in any case, you weren’t in any sort of mood for things like that today.

“Ciel. What’s up?” She turns to face you completely and she takes in your pajamas, frowning slightly. What did she want from you? It was eleven o’clock. “I’m here to ask you two things. The first, for you to clarify on exactly what you meant during our conversation outside your room. What, in detail, did you learn about Penny?” That’s what this was about? You guess it really WASN’T important, but you humor her anyway.

“Honestly, she didn’t tell me too many details, but it was easy to piece together. Small family, no social interactions, but skilled enough to get into a Huntsman academy? Penny has “secret-rich-girl” written all over her. I’m not sure why that was supposed to be a secret. I mean, I lived it too, how was I NOT going to figure it out?”

Ciel’s face take on a deep blush, but her features remain stoic and she nods slightly. “I can see how you, of all people, would come to the conclusion. I would thank you not to spread it around.” You half-nod. It didn’t seem like that big of a deal, but if Penny wanted it kept secret, then no one would hear it from you.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1691999
“The second question is perhaps more personal. Do you mind that?” You shake your head. In all honesty, you didn’t have that many secrets for a man of your station.

“How have you secured the loyalty of your team?” That wasn’t what you were expecting. “What do you mean by that?” you ask.

“During today’s exercise, I saw you give your team their orders. None of them questioned you. Weiss, I can understand, and I know Penny well enough to guess she wouldn’t disobey you, but how did you get Blake to agree? It’s common knowledge that she and your sister had an altercation the first day.”

You weren’t sure if you were honest. After all, she had still questioned you about how you were going to contribute. Did that count as “unquestioning loyalty?” You didn’t think so, but she never actually had a problem with what you told her to do. You needed more context.

“Where is this coming from, Ciel?” The cadet looks incredibly uncomfortable, whatever was wrong was wrong enough to break through her considerable reserves of discipline.

“Whitaker, what I am about to say does not leave this room.” You go as far as to cross your heart with your right hand raised. “I swear,” you promise. She takes a deep breath to steel her nerves and says in the most level voice she can manage.

“I suspect the remainder of Team CNRP is planning a mutiny against me.”

Whitaker and ciel literally have the same mind. Theres no way thats actually the case. She has to be uber paranoid
>>
Oh man, I'm really wondering how this is gonna play out.
>>
>>1692027
It's possible that she is just being a hardass to her team, something that young people wouldn't appreciate especially coming from someone near their age.
>>
>>1692008
SHADOW RUNNING INTENSIFIES!
>>
Guys I just had a revelation, Phyrra is the secret agent, not Jaune. Somehow she knows about Jaunes Onii-Chan Power and has come here to seduce him for her own gain. That's why she was worried when we sat down with both of them, she just didn't want us to take her ticket to power.
Oh man, it'll be such a shock when she (((accidentally))) kills Penny.
>>
>>1692020
Stay classy QM, see you soon o3o
>>
>>1692008
>" My associate Ceil can't possibly be this paranoid."

I mean, it's just Nora, Pyrrha and Ren. If anything, I expected issues in Cardin's team, what with their general attitude, but really? Ren's too in the zen, Pyrrha's probably just feeling an imbalance in attitudes since there's no Jaune to make everyone smile and have mmild fun that Nora can't provide for the mature team members, and Nora...

Nora is Nora.

This kinda makes me worried about RYAL. Yang is probably a bit much for Jaune to ease into combat around, and I don't think Ruby could give proper instruction to Jaune as he isn't nearly as proficient in combat as any of the three. Neo doesn't talk, and that's likely a big issue as she might feel like she isn't getting through to them. Neo is Neo but we reay don't know her game just yet.

I really feel that Ceil needs to chill and just drop the military standard she likely has for herself.

I dunno, what do you anons thing?
Also, thanks again for another good session, Brother! Happy to see you're sticking along with how the characters seem to naturally react and behave, not just assign a mood for them. It's really keeping the quest interesting!"
>>
Also, no more sessions this weekend. I got family shit tomorrow and a date Sunday. We'll aim for Monday, but that's a few days from now, so we'll have to see!
>>
>>1692095
Our Penny is too good for being offed so easily. Besides, what respectable robowaifu doesn't have backup bodies/memory units on standby, in case she goes down?
>>
>>1692136
Actually, on second thought, that date's supposed to be around noon. And the family stuff isn't confirmed. I'll let you guys know about tomorrow, but I SHOULD be free no later than 6 on Sunday, so we'll aim for that for now!
>>
>>1692140
I say we preemptively kill her just in case, it makes perfect sense, the reason Jaune was worried about us sitting down near him but not Phyrra Nikos is because she fed him lies.
>>
>>1692008
I can't see any of those goofs committing to a mutiny, but Whitaker's paranoia might throw a spanner in the works.

Well done on the quest so far, by the way. You seem to know and handle the material well.
>>

Wew, flashbacks to Cosgrove's Bleach quest and Peter Parker quest. Constant bitching on the dice rolls. Best of three became best of five, critical successes and failures, and we still ended up with terrible rolls and the bitching never stopped.
Shit rolls happen. It's just bad luck. Complaints won't change that.

We gotta protect Jaune and Pyrrha. We can't allow them to get wrapped up in Cinder's act.
There's no way we can just let them fuck up the match to make Penny get broken.

I have a plan.
We kick Mercymury right in the shins, and have an inquest reason to believe his legs are fake.
>>
>>1693956
>There's no way we can just let them fuck up the match to make Penny get broken.

>protect Jaune
You fool, that's exactly what he wants.
>>
Probably obvious by this point, but no session today due to family obligations. Tomorrow should be good, but again, we may have to bump it an hour behind our normal schedule.
>>
>>1693956
I'd rather let shit play out and see how it goes.
Shits different enough now that we can't metagame perfectly, which we shouldn't be doing anyway
>>
>>1693983
But we should still help him out. If he stays oblivious to Pyrrha and becomes strong enough to protect her from Cinder, that means he won't go after Weiss, the fall maiden is protected, and Ruby doesn't get hunted by Cinder or Salem!

Then again, we might need the silvereye powers...

They only get our approval if they can beat us in a fight. I'd suggest a series of trials if it wasn't for the fact Weiss would not take that well. Now another question. To those of you who said no to Neptune, should we try hooking him and Ceil up?

Blake and Sun?
Nora and Ren?

Should we go for the canon route and hook Jaune and Pyrrha up?

If we last until October and a new guy comes along that fits Weiss better, should we persue that option? I'm asking seriously, as Brother is against incest.

“Are you for real?” You poured your skepticism on as thickly as you could. Pyrrha Nikos was on her team, a well known professional regarding all things combat. Then again, so was that Valkyrie girl, and from what you’ve glimpsed the past few days, you wouldn’t put it past her to try and make her leader walk a plank.

“They’ve been openly rebelling against my authority. That is the exact definition of a mutiny.” Ciel seems to be taking the possibility very seriously. If you’re going to help her (or, more likely, save the rest of CNRP from her), you’ll need to humor her. You settle your features into a grave mask and ask with a steady voice, “What exactly have they been doing?”

“Nora is the main problem. She’s completely disregarded my orders, both on and off the battlefield.” That did sound serious. Still, it’s best to take things one at a time. “Let’s start with off the battlefield,” you suggest. Ciel gives a professional nod before listing Nora’s transgressions.

“I’ve ordered her, several times now, to complete her assignments in advance. Despite how easy it is in comparison to her usual methods, Nora still refuses and only begins, at the earliest, the night before. The quality of that work simply cannot be on par with what she would have presented had she listened to me. I suspect she’s doing it on purpose to imply my incompetence to the teachers.” An interesting and effective strategy, if it’s true, but it’s easy to offer an alternative. “Maybe she’s just lazy?”

“The girl has more energy than all of us. She is deliberately avoiding the work and sabotaging her own grade, and the only one who suffers for it, other than herself, is me. I must be the target.” You knew that was true, too. You had never caught a glimpse of Nora at rest. Even so, shirking her school work wasn’t the biggest issue Ciel had brought up.

“What about during battle?” Ciel’s gaze hardened as she spoke, “It’s only happened once, during this morning’s team exercise. I gave clear instructions that Nora was to remain beside Pyrrha and provide cover for myself and Ren. She instead jumped directly into the Beowolves and killed far more than we had managed up to that point.” Ciel’s arms, which had been behind her back for almost all of the conversation, moved to cross in front of her chest, the only sign that she was growing more frustrated as she recounted events, “Pyrrha was quick to cover Ren, but she cannot be in two places at once. I had to fend for myself. Her actions put me in danger and denied the team all of the points we could’ve been awarded had she simply worked with one of us.” That was a much bigger problem, but Ciel still had only discussed one of her teammates.

“What about the others? How are they involved?”

“Whenever I seek to correct Nora’s behavior, both Pyrrha and Ren are quick to deflect for her. Sometimes they will attempt subtlety and try to distract me with their own issues or concerns, others they will try and debate with me. They’re protecting her from me, and unless they’re incapable of seeing what’s happening, it’s an implicit endorsement of Nora’s methods for having me removed as the leader of the team.” That sounded…

>A) Ridiculous. “Ciel, honestly. They’re just chafing. You’ve had to have noticed that things at Beacon are much less formal than the Cadet’s Academy?”
>B) Plausible. “Hmm. I’ll keep an eye on them in the future. If there really is something there, they’re more likely to slip up around me than you.”

Ciel is unmoving, but you can see all of her muscles coiled with tension. She’s really worked up about this, isn’t she? You could sympathize with the feeling that everyone was out to get you, but being under covert fire for so long has taught you the difference between real threats and imagined ones. You place a hand on her shoulder and Ciel reflexively relaxes.

“Ciel, honestly.” You take a deep breath, thinking how best to phrase it, before it comes to you. “They’re just chafing,” you explain, “You’ve had to have noticed that things at Beacon are much less formal than the Cadet’s Academy?” Her mouth thins before she opens it to remind you, “I’m not an idiot, Whitaker. The lack of proper dormitory oversight was a big sign.” With you properly reprimanded, the offended air leaves her and she let out a small sigh.

“You’re right. We’re a long way from Atlas. A different approach is necessary with different subordinates, and they don’t get any more different than Nora Valkyrie…” Ciel nods to herself, and the moment of uncertainty passes. The quiet confidence you hadn’t noticed she had until it left her returns in full force. “I’ll talk to Ren. Nora’s claimed they’ve known each other for years, perhaps he’ll have an idea to make her listen to me.” You smile at the plan, give her a pat on the shoulder, and work your way back to your dorm.

When you open the door, Weiss and Blake are already in their beds and fast asleep. Penny has returned as well and is writing something in a notebook as she pours over one of the textbooks for your more mundane classes. You decide against disturbing her and climb back into your bed.

(A FEW DAYS LATER)

You hate red. You’ve never had a reason to before, but the color was trying to claw its way into your retinas like a movie monster through an air vent. Red trees, red leaves, red grass, and one red little girl whose team seemed so BLISSFULLY happy compared to your own. You drive a spigot into the stupid red tree with an angry kick and pretended that it was the section of your skull directly centered over the “hearing” part of the brain. Behind you, Jaune, the cocksure little bastard, gave an appreciative “ooh” at another of Yang’s hyperbolic stories. Ahead of you, Weiss shot another angry comment over her shoulder which caused Blake to bristle.

You had thought team RYAL tagging along during the Forever Fall trip would be fun. Sure, Jaune suggested it, which made you a little suspicious, but what could he do with seven other people to watch him? Turns out, he could draw a big fat underline between the differences your teams had: RYAL worked together because they understood one another, SPWB only worked together because you were around to make them.

Despite Professor Port’s reprimand, things between Weiss and Blake had been steadily heating up. That had been upsetting Penny, who had no idea what to do about it, and her constantly shifting, pained expressions had put you on edge more than the fighting had. You could feel the constant tension burning a hole in your brain.

You set the jar beneath the spigot and open it, allowing the sap to flow. You stand and stretch top pop the joints in your back. Nothing left to do but wait for it to fill, you suppose. You take a look around the surrounding woods to make another mental note of where your teammates were, a habit you were trying to pick up from an Atlesian cadet manual (courtesy of Ciel). Blake and Weiss had moved away from one another, finally, and seemed to be mulling over their frustrations. Penny, on the other hand, had sought out the company of Jaune and Liquorice, or “Ellie,” you suppose, and seemed to be having a pleasant conversation with the blonde. None of them were good situations, and as always, it falls to you to handle them.

Weiss is stewing on her anger, and you’ve never known that to end well. You take a few moments to try and relax before throwing yourself into the fire. Once you’re reasonably yourself, you approach your sister. She’s chosen an area far enough to speak normally without being overheard, but close enough to keep an eye on the others. Weiss is still on her guard when you approach, and rushes to get the first word in.

“If you’re here to play diplomat, you can keep walking.” That was pretty weak, coming from Weiss, so you shrug it off. “I’m not playing anything. Right now, I’m the team leader, not ‘big brother Whit.’ So if we need to have a talk, then we have a talk.” She looks wide-eyed at your tone and you shake your head. Guess you aren’t as calm as you thought. “Whitaker, are you okay?” Weiss seems concerned rather than angry. Thank goodness for small miracles. “Fine,” you say, “But I’ll be a lot better when you and Blake start getting along.” At the mention of Blake, Weiss’s mood sours again.

“Get along?! How can I be expected to get along with her when she’s a contrarian! You saw it during the team exercise, she has to fight over every little thing either of us say!” You mimic her crossed arms and ask, “Do you have a reason why she’d do that, or do you just think she’s spiteful?”

“Don’t act stupid, Whitaker! She already told us. Blake hates us because of our family, because of the SDC.” You run your fingers through your hair. She had a point, and it isn’t one you’ve forgotten. Blake had some form of issue with your father’s company, specifically their labor practices, if memory served. You really hope that isn’t all she cares about, because it’s way outside your capabilities to start providing better employee benefits.

“That can’t be everything, Weiss. I’m sure if we find out what’s actually bothering her if we take the time to ask.” She scoffs at the idea before motioning at something behind you. “Good luck with that when we can’t find her.” You look over your shoulder to where Blake was standing only a moment ago to find it vacant. Seems like she’s run off somewhere else.

>B) Take Weiss with you and go look for her, so you can have that chat right now. “We will find her, and when we do, this talk is happening!”

“I’ll be right back. Think about what you want to say to her before she gets here.” Weiss is about to retort, but you leave before she can, and whatever she’s about to say isn’t worth screaming at your retreating back. It takes you longer than you’d like to find Blake, but eventually, you spot her silhouette against the eye-gouging bright red forest. You cut through the underbrush, making no attempt to hide your movements, and she turns to watch you approach. She doesn’t run away again, so that’s good. You think, at least. She also doesn’t look very happy to see you, which you know isn’t good.

“Blake, we need to head back.” She pulls out her scroll, checks something, then fixes you with a glare. “They haven’t sent the call to return to Beacon. Why do I need to go anywhere?” Great, maybe Weiss was right. She really is a contrarian.

“Because I think you, Weiss and I all need to sit down and have a chat. As a team.” Blake doesn’t lower her guard. Unless your eyes are playing tricks on you, you think you can see her take a step back.

“I’m not going to be teamed up on by the two of you, Whitaker. If someone wants to talk to me, they can do it without backup.” You raise your hands, as if showing you’re unarmed, and agree, “Alright, then we can talk now. Weiss isn’t here, Penny isn’t here. It’s just you and me.”

Blake finally relaxes a bit. Angry is more relaxed than “about to run away,” so it seems you’re making some sort of progress. “What could you possibly want to talk about?” You’ve got a lot to get through. In many ways, Blake is your most mysterious teammate, but you don’t think she’ll have the patience to work through everything right now. What do you want to start with?

>A) The tension between the two of you. “Why are you so mad at me? We’ve only had one argument before today!”
>B) The reason she and Weiss can’t get along. “I know, at least a little bit, why Weiss doesn’t like you, but I have no idea why the feeling’s mutual.”
>C) The relationship between her and the SDC. “My father’s company affects a lot of people. It affected you enough to call us out on the very first day of school. What happened?”
>D) Blake herself, when she isn’t dealing with the Schnees in any way. “Well, what do you do for fun?”

There’s one question that’s been burning in the back of your mind since the team exercise, and Blake’s given you a golden opportunity to have it answered. “Why are you so mad at me?” you ask, and Blake recoils slightly in surprise. “What do you mean ‘why’?!”

“We’ve only had one argument before today! One! Outside of that one time, I’ve been perfectly reasonable, and I think I had a good reason to get emotional about my potential murder! I stood up for you during the team training, I even punched my sister in the stomach for you!” You catch your frustration for today starting to aim itself at Blake, and you shove it back down.

“For me?” she asks, and it’s far too quiet. “You did those things for my sake?” You open to mouth to reaffirm it when you notice that she doesn’t look surprised. She looks even angrier. “Do you honestly think I’m going to believe that?! You took the blame during training because it made you LOOK good!” Blake grits her teeth, but she isn’t finished talking, “Just like you took center stage in that stupid plan, to make yourself look good!”

Those bright eyes of hers appear on fire when she reaches the final accusation. “You didn’t stop Weiss for me, you stopped her for your family! So the Schnees could look like the good guys! So if you think you can stand there and lie to me, and everything will be okay, then you can turn around and leave now, because I’m not that stupid!”

Your broiling anger at her words starts to melt away as you notice something. “You know what? You caught me. I was lying.” Blake returns to a neutral stance, still obviously angry but willing to let you confess. “I didn’t do those things for you. But I didn’t do them for me, or for my family. I did them because I thought they were the right things to do.”

Blake rolls her eyes at you, but you cut in before she can dismiss your words. “I don’t let fights just happen, Blake. I stop them. I don’t let people take the fall when I make mistakes. I own up to them. I don’t order people to do things for me and kick my feet up, I lead them.” She can see how seriously you’re taking this, and her own anger, if it’s still there, is well hidden at this point. Blake crosses her arms and looks to the ground.

“How am I supposed to believe you, Whitaker?” She’s giving you a chance, at least, so you take it. “You trust me,” you say, “and if I break that trust, make me regret it.” She looks back up, and you want to think that you can see something in her that wants to believe you.

“Fine. I can live with that.” You almost smile before you remember that you came after Blake to bring her back to Weiss, and that conversation is going to be just as pleasant as this one was.

“So, Blake. I don’t know much about you, and you don’t know much about me, right?” The crunching of dead leaves underfoot had been driving you insane. You have to break the silence.

“I… Guess not?” Blake doesn’t seem to get where you’re going with this, but at least she’s talking. “How about we make a game of it?” you suggest. “You get a question, I answer, then I get a question and you answer. Fair?”

“I guess…” She chews on her lip for a second, then begins to ask, “How did-”

You cut her off with a raised finger. “Oop, it’s my turn. You were the last one to ask a question.”

Blake actually smiles at that and motions for you to go on. Now, what did you want to know?

“What do you do for fun?”

Blake eyes you with a minuscule amount of disbelief. “Isn’t that a little… Boring?” You hold a finger in front of her nose and she goes cross eyed attempting to keep it in view. “You can’t answer a question with a question,” you inform her before you retract your hand.

“I don’t know… I like books? Sometimes I play board games or watch stuff online. I go to the movies every now and then. Normal stuff,” she finishes with a small shrug, “boring stuff.”

“I’m not sure about boring, most of that can be pretty cool. Either way, your turn.” She hums, trying to think of something better than what you asked. It doesn’t take her long. As she comes up with something, Blake visibly loses the cheerier atmosphere that the game has fostered.

“You said that the White Fang tried to kill Weiss. How?” You’re dazed a bit that she’d ask so brazenly.

“You do know that you’re supposed to start easy with this game, right?” Blake doesn’t speak to point out that you’re breaking your own rules and waits for you to answer.

>A) “It was one of her concerts in an open air stadium. A White Fang Sniper tried to climb up the side of the building, but someone pulled him off before he got too high and beat the hell out of him. Witnesses said her savior was a tall guy, black hair with a beard, but we never found him to thank him.”
>B) “We were young. Eight, maybe, on a family trip. Mother was… Well, herself. Drunk off her ass, so one of the Fang managed to sneak Weiss off under her nose. They almost got her out of the park before one of our bodyguards found them.”
>C) “Someone sent a threat to father about some business deal he was working out at the time. He ignored it, and Weiss almost paid for it. The hitman they sent was something else. Tall, dark, some type of horns on his head and with a wickedly long katana. If Winter hadn’t been there… Well, I don’t want to think about it.”

“That’s… Not an easy thing to talk about, but alright.” You stop walking and take a moment to get your thoughts straight. Blake is mercifully patient. “Alright,” you begin, “Someone sent a threat to father about some business deal he was working out at the time. He ignored it,” which wasn’t very surprising. Your father received hundreds of threats like that every year, “and Weiss almost paid for it. The hitman they sent was something else.” The mental image you have of this potential murderer featured heavily in your nightmares for the next few weeks afterwards. You don’t physically swallow, but if Blake hadn’t been watching you, you might have.

“Tall, dark, some type of horns on his head and with a wickedly long katana. If Winter hadn’t been there… Well, I don’t want to think about it.” Blake doesn’t seem to want to either. She’s gone pale, and it looks like she’s shivering slightly. Her voice starts with a small shake when she asks, “How long ago was this?”

You knew the day, but made a show of pretending to remember. “Uh… Maybe three months before we got to Beacon?” You shouldn’t have said that. Blake looks even more afraid. Or panicked, as if she expected the White Fang’s personal hatchet man to jump out of the foliage at any given moment.

“Look, Blake, relax. I know it’s not fun to think about, but it’s been months since anyone’s seen him, and if he was going to attack again, he wouldn’t wait for us to be at a school with hundreds of trained fighters, right?” You had no idea when assassins were going to strike, that was the point, but it seemed to make Blake feel better.

“R-right…” Even if your hot air made the fear go away temporarily, Blake spent the rest of the trip within arm’s reach of at least one person on your team, including Weiss. You aren’t sure what rattled her so much, but if you’re going to keep your promise to Blake about doing the right thing, it may be a good idea to figure it out.

I set up a timeline, for if you chose to be Blake!Twin, so that would put the assassination attempt around a week after the train job, though it's vague enough that Blake would have no idea if she was still in the White Fang when it happened.

Probably not. I'll call it a rest day.
>>1699891
>A) Sniper assassination
Ghira, Blake's dad, is the guy who saved Weiss. This assassination attempt would've been the final straw that caused him and Kali to drop the Fang, but since the description is so vague and he likely didn't talk with Blake about SPECIFIC instances of White Fang violence (given it can be years later and she thinks Adam will give a fuck about Schnee employees), Blake wouldn't have known who it was either and we would've had to wait until Faunus Island for that reveal.
>B) & D)
For the people that didn't want to shake things up much more. B was for confirmation that your mom's a sack of shit, while D is for 100% ambiguity.

I feel we made some good progress on sorting out our team, there. If nothing else, I think Whit managed to make Blake trust him more.

I'm not sure. On the one hand I think we're more diplomatic and personable than Sun. On the other hand, well, we're a Schnee. I would expect Ghira and Kali to share Blake's initial unease with us.

They haven't been that bad. My checks are based on how difficult something should FEEL. This was a more serious, dramatic moment, so it's was harder than it would've been if the mood had been lighthearted. You kinda have to do it like that when you don't have a character sheet, which I don't want to do. Whitaker should be more you guys as a collective than a collection of numbers that automatically lean towards certain things, like diplomacy or combat.

You get what I mean, you guys should feel justified punching someone in the schnoz instead of talking it out without a number hanging over the situation to point out you would've been better off talking to him.

The next few weeks passed in blissful monotony. With Blake willing to give you a chance, she was much more receptive to your gentle prods that got her and Weiss either out of an argument or out of each other’s way. You had yet to actually SOLVE that problem, but it was manageable, and that was more than you could’ve hoped for before the trip to Forever Fall. Classes went well, with all none of your teammates having difficulties in either combat or general courses.

Working as a cohesive whole was still shaky, but had shown considerable improvement. As soon as you found an opportune time to work with Blake and Weiss, you were sure it’d only take a few more Team Combat courses for the group to begin to rely on one another.

More good news came in the form of Team CNRP’s rapidly improving performances. Evidently, your advice to Ciel (and whatever advice she had gotten from Ren) had turned things around for them. You had yet to sit down and chat with any of Ciel’s teammates, but you liked to pretend that you could notice their moods brighten. At least, you had noticed Pyrrha’s mood brighten. Nora wasn’t capable of melancholy and Ren wouldn’t emote properly if you had bought him his own island nation, so it was difficult to tell how they felt about anything.

Nothing was ever perfect, however, and the first year students of Beacon were no exception. RYAL was having difficulty finding their footing, so the rumor mill of the school said. You had heard mildly disturbing things about arguments in their dorm, as well as reports that Jaune Arc had been performing somewhat poorly, with “somewhat” surrounded by the biggest air quotes the speaker could find. The final team, Team CRDL, had shown themselves to be eager bullies, picking on anyone they could either outnumber or outmuscle, preferably both. You hadn’t personally seen anything they’d done, so you took those rumors with a grain of salt. It was good they could work together without your intervention, you supposed.

You’re using your free time today to finish the last of the leadership novels that your father gave you. You thought they would’ve lasted much longer than a single semester, but then again, you had skipped over anything in them that your father had highlighted. Those sections mostly focused on his brand of leadership rather than yours. Leading through outsourcing hardly seemed like leading at all.

You hear light footsteps rushing towards the dorm’s door, so you set your book down and patiently wait for whatever was coming to ruin your good mood. Penny crashes through the frame and looks around with a panicked expression before her eyes settle on you. “Whitaker!” she exclaims, somehow not out of breath.

“Penny, what a surprise.” You don’t bother trying to sound sincere. “What can I do for you?” She pulls you out of your chair and onto your feet, entirely ignoring your yelp of protest at the manhandling. “It’s Jaune,” she says with real fear in her voice, “he’s in trouble! If we do not hurry, I’m afraid CRDL is going to hurt him!”

You mentally recoil at Jaune’s name, but if Penny’s this worried, you should probably do something. Even so, it’s never a smart idea to charge into danger. You grab her by the shoulders and force her to stop dragging you bodily towards the door and, presumably, Jaune.

“Penny, I can’t help if we go in blind!” All of her forward momentum stops at once, and she sets you down. Penny’s watery eyes meet yours, and noise that may have been intended to sound like speech rushes out of her. You cover her mouth, but the torrent of noise doesn’t stop for a few seconds. You wait until it does to ask your question.

“What, exactly, happened?” It takes her a few false starts, but eventually, Penny gets herself under control. “When I woke up this morning, I left with the rest of our team for br-” You bring your hand back into position and force her to start again. “Just focus on what’s happening with Jaune and CRDL,” you tell her, and this time you get the story you wanted.

“I was hoping to spend time with one of my friends, and I noticed Jaune entering the deployable locker room. I approached him, but he refused my offer of companionable activities, claiming that he was due for a practice bout with Pyrrha.” You hadn’t known Pyrrha was performing practice bouts. In fact, everything you heard said Pyrrha was making a concerted effort to avoid anyone who challenged her outside of Ms. Goodwitch’s dueling class. Another lie from Arc, perhaps?

“Jaune wandered the lockers for some time. I do not believe he knew where he had left his equipment. He passed his own locker several times, and refused my offer to help him locate it. I followed him for a few more minutes before CRDL entered the room. When he saw them, Jaune told me that I should leave! He is afraid of them, there will be conflict! That’s why I came here, you are exceptional at resolving conflicts! You have to help!”

The section of your soul that had spent the past month or so building itself up to resist any of Arc’s ploys crumples. Penny hadn’t known what to do, so she came to you. Backing out wasn’t an option. “Take me to them,” you order gently, and Penny rushes to comply.

Huh so he is training with pyrrha still, perhaps then the issue with the team involves the fact that Jaune is sneaking away from them instead of bonding.
>>
>>1705920
The locker room is eerily silent. The lights are off, the only source of visibility being the sun’s rays pouring through the towering upper windows. The contrasting light against the murky shadows that prowled along the ground sent a chill up your spine, despite the ease of seeing what was in front of you. Instincts force you to take slow, controlled breaths as you crept forward. Penny had very little patience for your instincts. A call of “Jaune!” echoed through the room, and loud, unnatural banging responded. You jump, and only after the embarrassing display can you make out what sounds like Jaune’s muffled voice.

You and Penny follow the noises and eventually discover the source. It appears Jaune has been stuffed in an empty locker. Penny yanks the door open, and the blonde boy tumbles onto the ground. For a few seconds, all you hear is pained groaning.

“Thanks guys,” he finally says, “I was worried I’d be stuck in there until class tomorrow…” Penny gives him a pitying look while you pull him to his feet. If he’s going to act pathetic, he could at least do it with some dignity. It made sense to you. As Jaune waves away your teammate’s concern, something catches your eye. The name on the Rocket Locker that Jaune feel out of is clearly marked above it. “Velvet Scarlatina.” A quick glance at the lockers immediately to the right, and your heart seizes for a moment. “Weiss Schnee,” followed by “Whitaker Schnee.”

It’s suspicious, but you need one more thing before you can confront the spy. “Penny?” you ask, and she responds with a small hum. “Where exactly, in this room, did you leave Jaune when you ran to get me?” She tilts her head, either at the question or in recollection, before answering, “It was in this section, where we found him.” You nod at that. You already know the answer to your next question, but you decide to make a point and ask anyway.

“How are these lockers organized when not in use?” Penny’s response is much faster this time. “Alphabetically, by the last name,” she happily supplies. You’ve got him now.

“So, if Jaune is looking for his equipment for some hypothetical duel, why would he be on the opposite side of the room, where my sister and I keep our equipment?” You lower your voice as you speak, and suddenly both of the other people in the room are aware you are not happy. Penny doesn’t say a word, but Jaune is quick to stutter, “W-well, you see, it’s dark in here and I can’t see the-”

“Penny, were the lights off when you left?” She doesn’t respond, and wrings her hands together before asking, “Whitaker, what’s wrong?”

“I’m trying to figure that out. Were the lights off when you left?” Penny responds with a quiet ‘no,’ and turns her confused gaze to Jaune instead. “I would like some form of an explanation, Jaune,” you prompt. You can hear your father in your voice.

He sighs, defeated, and looks at his shoes as they scuff against the floor. “Okay, I guess I’m caught… I was trying to… Uh, put this in Weiss’s locker…” He reaches into his pocket and produces a paper, which you snatch out of his shaking hands. It appears to be a letter of some kind. You quickly skim it, picking out the words which most stand out.

“-watched you from afar-”

“-beautiful voice-”

“-snow angel-”

You aren’t sure what you’re looking at, so you decide to ask the source. “Jaune,” you start, your voice beginning to descend into a growl, “What, exactly, am I looking at?” He paws at the back of his head, trying to come up with something, but whatever remains of decency in him forces him to tell the truth.

“It’s a, uh… A love letter?”

>A) Tear it up, leave now, and never think of this again.

You’ve slowly frozen. It isn’t a sudden thing, because you haven’t been shocked or surprised, so you can’t describe it as “freezing” in a typical way, but the symptoms are all present. You can’t make a decision. You can’t even move. You simply stand there, with Jaune’s insipid little paper in your hands as he and Penny grow to appear increasingly worried about what your next move may be.

There’s not enough information, you decide. After all, you had, deliberately, barely spoken to Jaune after your suspicions of him set in. To find that your worst fears weren’t true was pleasant, but the situation left you woefully unprepared for this. You had hardly given any thought to Weiss dating. She hadn’t seemed interested with all of the rich sons (and a few daughters) she’s rejected over the years. Perhaps some part of you simply believed you’d never be in a position to make decisions on her love life, a part of you that you curse now.

“And what exactly do you intend to do with it?” That was important, right? His intentions. You knew some men had horrible intentions when it came to women, establishing Jaune’s is important.

“I was just… Testing the waters, I guess? I didn’t sign it,” you check and see that he hadn’t, “I just wanted to let her know that someone was out there… Someone who hadn’t quite figured out what he wanted to say to her.” You skim the note again.

“An awfully large amount of ink for someone who doesn’t know what to say with it.” Jaune quakes a bit and gives a nervous smile. “Well, I kinda rambled… Whe- uh, if I talk to her, I want it to be really well thought out, you know? I want it to sound like something-” he cuts himself off, and doesn’t pick up again.

>>
>>1706236
“Something…?” Jaune swallows at your prompting before finishing his thought. “I mean, this is gonna sound weird… Like, really weird, but I wanted it to sound like something you’d say.” He was right, that was weird. Too weird for you to interrupt him, which he took as a sign to continue, “I mean, you and Ren are the only other guys here who aren’t jerks, and you always say smart stuff. Stuff that you mean.”

He continues to kick at the floor as he talks, “I’m not like that. I keep talking and talking until something stupid comes out, but how I feel isn’t stupid! So what I say shouldn’t be either.”

Your guts crawl at the idea. Someone confesses to your sister using words from yours was just… Offensively wrong. You still haven’t made up your mind on what to even do about Jaune’s crush, so you try fixing one thing at a time. “So why not make it sound like something Ren would say? Or your brother?” He has a brother, right? You remembered something like that.

Jaune gives a half-hearted laugh at your suggestion. “Ren doesn’t talk much, and I’m the only guy in my family besides my dad. He isn’t around enough for me to base anything off of him, so I guess that leaves you.” Yes, that leaves you playing surrogate big brother to a guy who planned on using whatever advice you gave, either through direct instruction or through simply listening to you speak, to woo Weiss. What are you going to do about this?

>A) Embrace the bonds of pseudo-brotherhood. “Well, good luck to you.”
>B) If he wants to try for Weiss, he’ll have to do much better than this. “You’re pathetic. If you try now, you’ll just embarrass yourself. Give it a few months with me coaching you, though, and you might get there before you graduate.”
>C) Let him down gently. Well, more gently than Weiss would. “Honestly, Jaune, I just don’t see it happening.”
>D) Full rejection, stop this now. “Stay away from my sister, Arc.”

>Alright, first off: you wanted to sound like me? Remember I'm her BROTHER. Please be careful of whom you imply she's attracted to. Seriously, the rumors are bad enough. Besides which, on a personal level, I'd prefer if you were as honest as possible with her; you might want to avoid putting her off, but if you want to woo her by LYING, I'll murder you. You didn’t know him very well, but Jaune’s already shown more genuine enthusiasm in your sister than almost all the suitors that had come to call over the years. Weiss wasn’t even around to see him gush about it! Something sticks in your head, an insane idea that you’ve never had before, but suddenly found extremely appealing…

“Jaune, look at me.” He does as he’s told, meeting your eyes with an unsteady gaze. “You’re pathetic,” you state with an air of finality. Jaune cringes away and Penny, who had begun to fade into the wall, gives a sharp gasp. “If you try now, you’ll just embarrass yourself,” and Jaune unconsciously nods in agreement. He wasn’t blessed with an overabundance of confidence.

“Give it a few months with me coaching you, though, and you might get there before you graduate.” Time seems to stop between the three of you, and Jaune’s slowly lowering head snaps towards you. He can’t seem to believe what you said.

“Are you serious?” he asks, and you refuse to answer, opting instead to keep him under your rapidly lightening gaze. Jaune notices the shift in expression, and a grin as bright as his armor cracks over his features. “You’re serious?!” You finally confirm it with a nod, and Jaune can’t help but pump a fist and shout, “Yes!”

You push his hand down and begin your first lesson, “Don’t do that.” He nods, still grinning. Lesson complete. You’re better at this than you thought you’d be. The three of you step towards the exit, only for you to be blocked by a fourth person standing in the doorway.

“Jaune?” she asks, confusion evident, “You missed our practice match.” Wow. He wasn’t lying about his duel with Pyrrha?

Jaune’s apologies had flown in every direction before he scampered off to finally have that match with Pyrrha. You’d have thought the four-time champion would’ve been annoyed at being kept waiting for the one unsanctioned fight she’d graced anyone with since the year began, but Pyrrha surprised you by being all smiles. You had even earned one - a genuine one, not like the fake one she had given you weeks before - after Jaune explained that you had helped him out. Thankfully, even he had the presence of mind not to spill the beans on what, exactly, you were going to keep helping him with.

It’s only noon by the time you and Penny return to the dorm. Penny busies herself by sitting on her bed and looking at something on her scroll. She seems pretty absorbed in whatever she’s doing. You wouldn’t be surprised to find her still at it hours later. Still, you had about half the day free now. What are you going to do with it?

“Penny? What are you looking at?” The girl jumps at your sudden voice after a long period of relative silence, but smiles and turns the image towards you. You move closer towards her for a better view and take a seat on Weiss’s bed. The images on her screen seemed to be several forms of advanced machinery. You’d like to guess as to their purpose, but whatever these things do, it’s far above your paygrade as the man who forged Langerdorn.

“So, what is it?” Penny turns the scroll back towards herself and begins to tap away at it. “A puzzle my father made for me. He enjoys testing himself, and me, with practical simulations of equipment malfunctions. The problems he provides are usually created after he first rigorously observes the machine in real life, and after finding the smallest change which causes the highest loss of productivity, he sends me the altered versions - present only in virtual forms of course, father would never destroy real machines - to fix. I greatly enjoy it!”

That sounded horrible boring to you, but it was difficult to squash the feeling of jealousy. Your father gave you puzzles, too, but never because he thought you’d have fun solving them. In the interest of shaking of the melancholy that had sudden come over you, you continue the conversation.

“So, what’s your family like? The Polendinas? Are you guys related to Dr. Polendina?” It would make sense. Any family that bonded over an engineering puzzle would certainly be welcome at the good doctor’s dinner table. “Yes, he’s my father!” Penny states, with visible glee.

Well, that explained a lot. You almost wanted to kick yourself for not knowing immediately, but the truth was that you simply hadn’t had time to ruminate over Penny’s familial ties with the most gifted roboticist in Atlas. A man as rich and successful as Dr. Polendina would certainly be the type to seclude his family from the public, the way your father had with his children. Even with all the information falling into place, however, there was still much about Penny that you didn’t know.

>A) Ask about the rest of her family. “What’s your mother like?”
>B) Ask about Beacon. “I’m not sure we ever told each other about why we both chose Beacon over Atlas.”
>C) Ask about her semblance. “You’re a telekinetic, right? Why don’t you ever use that outside of combat?”
>D) Ask about her past. “What did you do before you decided to fight monsters?”

There’s a lot you could ask her, but you decide to stick to the one thing you knew for sure that the two of you had in common. “I know why I’m here, and it’s the same reason Weiss is here. I know Ciel’s here with you, but I’m not sure we ever told each other about why we both chose Beacon over Atlas.”

Penny sets her puzzle aside and instead focuses her curious expression towards you. “I do not believe we have. Would you like to share our reasons now?” You shrug in a gesture that mimicked non-committance but was universally understood to mean “yes” before leading the discussion, “Our father owns the Schnee Dust Corporation, which to many people means he owns Atlas, and everyone in it. Neither of us wanted to spend our lives as his personal ‘ace in the hole,’ to be married off to the most influential suitor. Our older sister, Winter, trained at Atlas to become a Huntress, then with the military to become a Specialist. I’m sure your father’s told you about the power struggle between the SDC and the military?” It was common knowledge at every level of Atlesian society, but if Penny had been secluded, there was a chance she hadn’t heard of it.

Luckily for you, she gives a subdued nod, so you continue, “Well, Winter becoming one of General Ironwood’s best and brightest meant that she was effectively out of father’s reach. Unfortunately, that meant that the military was effectively closed to Weiss and I. Father has moved quickly to bribe anyone who’d give us a chance in the Specialist’s tract, and the ones he couldn’t sway, he threatened. We could go to Atlas Academy, of course, but without the protection of the military branch of the Academy, we’d eventually be forced, maybe even by our teachers, into his fold as personal Huntsmen. He’s wanted someone like that for years.”

“So, we took the third option and went to a school that didn’t live in his shadow. Beacon was a natural choice, with Vale’s history as the second safest kingdom, and the most culturally similar.” You had to take a breath after finishing your story. It wasn’t incredibly long or complicated, but remembering it always took something more than the air in your lungs. Penny was slow to start her own history.

“Well… Atlas was a natural choice for me, but my father suggested that I would benefit more from seeing the world beyond Solitas. My uncle agreed, after a while, and then I met Ciel and came here. It is not as exciting as your own story,” she finishes with a shrug, moving her eyes away from your own. She doesn’t look like she wants to talk about it anymore.

I wanted to pick A, but Whitaker's too much of a gentleman to pry into a lady's private affairs (when he's not shadowrunning).

He's also too much of a gentleman to resist a good puzzle.

So, this would be the part where I call for a roll to see how you do, but this >>1707084 is such frustrating bullshit that I'm counting it as your roll, even though it was early.

My official policy: If I'm about to call to roll, and someone rolls early and gets bullshit high numbers like this, I'm going to count it. Don't start trying to hoard good rolls, because they only count if they're incredibly unlikely and happen JUST BEFORE I call for a roll.

Things taper towards an uncomfortable silence. Penny obviously doesn’t want to discuss what truly happened. Whatever it was, it greatly upset her. You decide to try and lighten the mood by making a fool of yourself instead.

“Hey, Penny, let me try one of those puzzles.” She quirks one of her eyebrows at you and begins to grow a teasing smile. “Are you certain you’d like to try, Whitaker? These puzzles are designed by one of the most brilliant minds on Remnant,” she says, as you hop from Weiss’s bed to hers. You answer with a quick shrug and point out, “That means there’s no shame in losing. C’mon, let me try it out.”

She passes the scroll to you and you’re greeted by one of the most monstrous examples of Atlesian engineering you’d ever seen. Its purpose was an enigma, and its form was equally perplexing.

“Is this just a cube made out of guns?” For all the world, it looked like one. Barrels and triggers seem to flop out haphazardly in several random directions, but the mass still formed six clear sides. “That is a common misconception,” Penny clarifies, “It’s actually a-”

Penny’s explanation of the… thing eventually begins to piece the purpose together in your mind. Suddenly you could figure out the necessity of each extraneous barrel and stock, and your mind flew with possibilities. It was a phenomenon that several people had experienced before, you recalled in the back of your mind. A sudden clarity on topics that should be beyond oneself. You could also recall that, usually, such things were only temporary, so you worked fast.

Penny’s droning explanation drew to a close as she saw how your fingers danced along the screen, taking the virtual box apart piece by piece, with not a single movement wasted. Soon, the two of you huddled around her scroll in total silence. You aren’t sure how much time had passed, but you were already feeling the momentary rush of understanding fade as you ran into more and more problems deeper into the cube.

Soon, your brain was forced to function normally, and the easy solutions stopped coming. You fruitlessly tapped at random parts until the scroll shook in your hand. A message notification popped up, and you were too slow to divert your already charging finger. A tap brought up a confirmation message, and a second clumsy tap to dismiss it instead selected the affirmative.

Penny lunged to pull your arm back, but the damage was already done. You were staring at some form of login screen, incredibly bare with only one box for an username and another for the password. Behind them, the background had the symbol of the Kingdom of Atlas blazoned upon it. Above them floated a series of letters:

Weiss’s day had been going to hell. Her uniform had been ruined by a return of Whitaker’s “Ink Pen” prank. The only reason her idiot of a brother could still breathe properly is that Weiss hadn’t been his target, and that had been just enough to forgive him for making her walk around in one of her combat skirts all day. Of course, things didn’t stop there.

For some reason Weiss didn’t care to come up with, Blake was the only member of Team SPWB that had joined her for classes. Penny had been injured during one of the week’s earlier combat classes, and Whitaker, the stupid selfish selfless moron, had offered to stay behind to take care of her. Admirable that he’d willingly make his classes, and the metric ton of make up work, more difficult just to help one of them. Dispicable that it had resulted in her and Blake having no one to place between them.

And for the final cherry on top, Weiss’s last class with Dr. Oobleck required her to have her history book, which she had left in the dorm that morning. She could’ve borrowed another student’s (as long as it wasn’t Blake), but her notes had been written into the margins. Without those notes, keeping up with Oobleck was impossible.

Weiss stormed towards her door, angry at the world, and stopped when she heard it. The unmistakable noise of a moan. A guttural, primal sound torn from only the deepest valleys of pleasure that mere mortals could experience. It sounded like Penny.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1707470
Weiss pressed herself against the door, careful to make no noise despite her nervous shivering, and listened. The noise continued, quieter now so that only the two inside and the one by the door could hope to play audience to it. A consistent, rolling sound of ecstasy.

“Whitaker…” That was Penny’s voice! It was unmistakable! Weiss had to clasp a hand over her mouth to stop a shocked shriek. Is this what he meant by ‘take care’ of his teammate?! It didn’t bother her, on a logical level. Whitaker was his own person, and so was Penny. She had been injured, the ugly bump in her shoulder proved that. If this is how they wanted to, uh, bond, then Weiss didn’t want to stop them. But she also really needed that book…

The only thing to do was wait for them to finish. Weiss was NOT about to walk in on her brother mid “act,” and the class didn’t begin for another twenty minutes. That didn’t leave much room for error, which meant waiting by the door any knowing EXACTLY when they were done…

Weiss stood guard, her arms crossed and her face on fire, and listened to exactly how far Whitaker and Penny could take things. She could tune them out when it was just noises, but her ears couldn’t stop perking up whenever they talked, to her shame and frustration.

“Ah~!”

“Are you alright?”

“I… I think it popped…” Weiss’s eyes bulged out of their sockets. That couldn’t mean what she thought it meant…

“Was I being too rough?”

“No… I think I liked it more…”

“Should we stop?” Yes, obviously you idiot! She didn’t care if this fling turned into something more permanent, Weiss was NOT going to let her brother knock someone up before he graduated!

“No. I want to keep going.” No, no, no, no, no!

“Alright…” And then the moaning started up again. That was the final straw. Damn the embarrassment, damn the consequences, and especially damn her brother, Weiss was going to put a stop to this!

She grabbed the handle and flung the door aside with as much force as she could manage.

WHITAKER SCHNEE! What in the HELL do you thin-” Weiss’s words died in her throat as she took in the scene. The two of them sat in the floor, fully clothed in their respective pajamas. Whitaker was sat behind Penny, both hands on her shoulders. Her painful-looking bump free shoulders. I think it popped...

Weiss’s faced set ablaze as she grabbed the history book off of her desk and ran as fast as her legs could carry her.

So has Weiss made any friends at Beacon? It seems like Whitaker is her only real social link, since she'd have no reason to hang out with Ruby or Yang (that we've seen), and Blake is a frenemy at best. She's kind of got that bad mix of high standards and abrasiveness that doesn't lend itself to making friends under normal circumstances, and the only person she ever showed interest in (in normal cannon) is Pyrrha.

It happened in canon and thats why jaune and weiss are the best fit.

I've been running at 5 PM CST/10 PM UTC. Usually, it's "Every Other Day" unless I:

#2 Have IRL obligations.

That schedule isn't going to last forever, though, as I go back to college at the end of next month. Once I get into the groove again (shouldn't take long), I should be able to nail down a weekly schedule.
