You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Today, you were off with your party to go explore that Ruin that Solaire had so helpfully informed you about. Given how nice and helpful Solaire was, you did not really have any doubts to his sincerity in telling you about such a lucrative area for loot.

However, the Ruin entrance was pretty far into the Frontier, so it was a fairly long journey, going past even the outlying town of Aldenshire. Thankfully though, thanks in no small part to your party's efforts, the roads were safe again and reports of bandit activity had dropped heavily.

Seemed like Morgan was taking advantage of the relative safety to ease off on her scouting, as she was walking pretty close to your side rather than ranging off ahead. She'd been getting pretty close to you like this ever since that one day back at the Monastery.

Of course, this was not lost upon your other companions. Nino kept whispering to Naru, who just shrugged at every suggestion. You were pretty sure the tired cleric knew what was going on, but simply didn't care.

I'd wait until we'd find a small airship to carry the whole party. A Kingdom's influence is probably directly related to how many larger ships it owns.

You decide to let Morgan do as she pleases. You had enough confidence in her skills that you were sure she knew when they would be needed.

"Oh! Oh! Is that it over there!?" Nino says with excitement as she points forward.

Sure enough,, you could see the tops of ancient stone spires just barely jutting above the treeline.

"I'll check it out." Morgan says as she pulls up her hood and dashes forward, not making a sound as she does so. Not a single snapped twig or rustling leaf.

You really have to find out how she learned that. You've only ever seen elves move so silently. After a few seconds, Morgan melds back out of the bushes and motions for you all to come forward.

"It's clear, but there's something you have to see." She mumbles.

You and you group head up, where you see what you presume is the entrance to the Ruin, however, you quickly see why Morgan is concerned.

Seems like someone got here before you did.

"Signs of a camp." Morgan kneels down and points to the ground. "Leftover ash is from a campfire, and I see holes pounded in by tent stakes."

You point to the Ruin entrance, where the large stone cap blocking the door had been pushed aside.

"Yeah, seems like another party stumbled across this." Morgan nods. "No clue who they might be, but given the size of the campsite, I estimate probably a group of four to five."

"Those meanies! This was our find!" Nino whines.

"Hey, we can just take 'em out and loot them." Naru shrugs.

"That's not a very cleric thing to do!" Nino gasps.

"Never said we'd KILL them." Naru rolls her eyes. "I just want their stuff, not their lives."

"How do you want to proceed?" Morgan turns her eye to you. "No telling if these guys will be hostile to us or not if we run into them."

You shrug and start walking towards the Ruin entrance. You were sure it would be large enough for two parties to be able to adventure in.

"Well, if that's what you want..." Morgan sighs as she falls in behind you.

"Yay! Ruin delving, Ruin delving!" Nino cheers.

"Better enjoy this sunshine while I can, I guess." Naru groans.

Immediately upon entering, you get a sense of claustrophobia as the walls close in and the light begins to fade, the way only lit by glowing stones and crystals embedded in the ceiling and walls. Obviously the work of whoever built this place long ago.

"Seems like this first level's been picked clean." Morgan frowns as she looks around and brushes her gloved hand against a wall, kicking up a small cloud of white dust.

"What's that?" Nino asks curiously.

"Tomb wight remains." She grunts. "Typical creature to find in a place like this. That other party definitely rolled through here."

"Guess we have to go deeper, huh?" Naru sighs.

You pick through the upper level, but you don't find anything particularly valuable. A few gold trinkets and assorted minor relics that could to sold off to vendor, but not much else.

"Eh, damn, that was kinda a waste of time, honestly." Naru groans as she stows away the meager loot in her backpack.

"That's why we have to go deeper!" Nino whines. "Everybody knows all the most valuable stuff is on the bottom!"

"You'd be surprised how disappointing that line of thinking can be." Naru shakes her head. "Let's head down."

You nod and lead the way to a large stone staircase, snaking down deeper into the earth.

"Don't worry, I've got a mapping spell active, so we won't get lost!" Nino assures you. You notice a glowing blue line continuously etching itself on a piece of parchment she was holding.

You nod and continue downwards. The stairs lead to another hallway littered with wight dust, up until you reach a fork where the hall diverged into two paths.

The left path looked to be where the other party went off to. Wight dust had been tracked in that direction by numerous feet. The path to the right looked pristine and untouched. Obviously they didn't split up.

You motion for your party to follow you down the path to the right. They all carefully do so, with Morgan right behind you and Nino and Naru bringing up the rear. You keep your halberd up and ready. After all, in these narrow spaces, you had to expect any threat at any time.

Soon enough, you arrive at a new diverging path. You could see another set of steps leading further down into the Ruin. However, you could see a doorway leading to a larger room beyond.

You enter the room, keeping your eyes scanning throughout the area. It looked to be one large, open hall, with large columns lining the edges of the room, which could provide concealment.

"Movement." Morgan warns as she nocks an arrow in her bow.

Sure enough, you could see shapes emerging from the walls and shadows. Ghostly white beings floating towards you, their faces twisted in a combination of rage and despair. You could immediately feel the temperature in the air drop, and condensation begins to collect on your armor.

From what you remember, wights were resistant to physical attacks, but not completely immune. Plus, the end of your halberd begins to glow a soft golden light, evidence of Naru putting Sol's blessing on it.

Morgan and Nino would be more efficient at engaging opponents at range, but there were a lot of wights, and they could phase through physical obstacles. Perhaps you needed to draw their attention away from the others.

You waste no time in charging at wights, who immediately close in on you. This gives Morgan and Nino more breathing room to make their attacks, but that also means you'd have to bear the brunt of the ghostly assault.

Your halberd glints in the underground light as Morgan's arrows and Nino's magic bolts begin to fly.

Morgan's blessed arrows and Nino's fireballs slam into the mass of wights, causing a number of the to disintegrate as they silently scream. However, it's not enough, as they continue to pour out of the walls like water.

You make a wide, arcing swing with your halberd, wiping out four of the wights in one swing, but they're not stopped by your fighting. Ghostly hands claw straight through your armor and into your body, and you immediately start to shiver from their ice cold aura.

This was how incorporeal wights killed intruders, by literally freezing them death. Your armor may as well not exist against them.

Thankfully, Naru's healing magic proves to do the just the trick, as the combined might of you, Morgan, and Nino clears out the wights, reducing them to ash and dust.

"Jeeeeez." Nino sighs loudly. "What's up with wights, anyways?"

"Nobody really knows. They just seem to be drawn to tombs and old Ruins like this." Morgan shrugs as she checks her fired arrows to see if they could be recovered. "Figured you would have read up on them."

"The undead always give me the creeps." Nino sticks out her tongue in disgust. "I can never sleep after reading a book about them."

"Yeah, well, their mistake for picking a fight with a Sol cleric." Naru grunts as she shuffles over to the end of the room. "Score! Found what they were trying to protect!"

Naru then pulls out a large gold cross from a musky old chest.

"Should have let me check the chest first." Morgan cautions. "What if it was a mimic?"

"Pah. Everybody knows mimics are just a myth!" Naru rolls her eyes. "Besides, look at this thing! We can hock this off in Eisenwand easy!"

"It looks like a religious symbol of some sort." Nino frowns. "Are... are you sure it's okay to sell?"

"NOTHING is too sacred to sell." Naru winks at the girl. "Depending on who you're selling to! Remember that, kid."

You point to the stairs, indicating that you would continue to the next level down.

"All right." Morgan nods. "Nino, Naru, fall in."

Nino nods as her little magical map continues to scribble down your path, while Naru stows away the golden cross.

"Third level here we come!" Nino says excitedly.

You all delve further down, reaching the third level. It doesn't look too different from the other levels above, but you can see more paths snaking ahead. Morgan steps forward for a second and kneels down, press her hand against the ancient stone floor.

"There's definitely movement on this level." She grimaces. "Something physical, so we're not facing just wights down here."

"A Ruin monster?" Nino's eyes sparkle. "I wonder what it could be!? I hope it's a cave worm!"

"Oh god no. Maybe it's just some dire rats." Naru mumbles.

A well placed shot by Morgan drops an arrow right into one of the spider's many eyes. The creature shrieks in pain and recoils away, avoiding Nino's fire blasts in the process.

Thankfully, it buys you the time you need to finally cut yourself free of the web using a combination of your halberd and sheer brute strength.

Though in that time, the spider takes the opportunity to scuttle away in the darkness.

"It's not gone." Morgan mutters as her eyes scan the darkness around you. It's just now that you realize you're in a rather cavernous chamber. Massive and lined with silky spiderwebs.

"It's looking for an opportunity to pick one of us off." Morgan cautions. "Spiders are ambush predators. They'll never attack from the front."

Probably back at the kennels. He's still a pup.

And with a confident grin, Nino raises both hands into the air and claps them together.

And just like that, a massive shockwave of flame bursts out from where she clapped, instantly filling the room with fire and ash as the countless strands of silk and webbing is set alight.

Hell, even the spider itself is sent toppling from the ceiling, burning and shrieking before impacting the stone floor with a sickening CRUNCH. Its exoskeleton cracks and splits like a dropped coconut, but the giant creature continues to thrash and twitch.

You end the spider rightly with a halberd smash to the face, but at this point the whole thing was academic. The spider was already a goner, you just quickened the pace.

"Damn, kid, not bad." Naru nods in approval. "You really blew the shit outta this place without harming us."

"I know, right?" Nino smiles proudly. "I learned from last time, and I figured out how to channel my area of effect spells so they won't hurt allies!"

"Huh, that's pretty neat." Naru blinks.

"I didn't want to accidentally blow up the Templar again." Nino says a bit guiltily.

You just stride up and give Nino well deserved headpat.

"Hehehe, thanks!" She giggles.

You almost swear you could feel Morga glaring at you. You spin around, but Morgan was already looking up towards the ceiling.

"Hey, what's that?" She asks, pointing upwards.

You follow her finger all the way up, where you see a wad of webbing that hadn't quite burned away yet. Wrapped inside was some sort of item, which you managed to catch a glimpse of when the web around it finally burned off and it fell to the ground.

You raise your arm and quickly catch the bow before it hits the ground, giving you the opportunity to examine it more closely.

Thars'Dan, The Unyielding Thorn: Carved from the wood of a sacred Elven Elder Tree, Thars'Dan brims with the power of Luna, the moon god and patron deity of the Elves. Mere possession of this bow appears to boost the bearer's speed and reflexes, allowing them to make highly accurate shots on the move.

Sol'Mar, The Falling Star: Carved from ancient yew and coated with gold engravings resembling angel wings, Sol'Mar was infused with the power of Sol, causing any arrow drawn with it to burn with the heat of Sol itself. All attacks made by this bow are counted as magical and attack power is increased.

>???: Carved from a wood of unknown origin, this bow was made to resemble a pair of deer antlers. Anybody holding this bow seems to have their presence shrouded, making it harder for them to be noticed. In addition, the bearer seems to take on animal-like qualities which vary from user to user...

You examine the bow in your hands. It looked like a giant deer antler bent into the shape of a bow, though you could tell that it was just wood carved to look this way. Other than that, it looked rather plain.

However, that didn't mean there wasn't some masterful workmanship put into it. You couldn't see any flaws anywhere in this bow.

Though what made you curious was that you didn't not recognize this style of bow making. A lay person's first thought would be that it was Elven, but they tended not to carve their bows to resemble animals or animal parts. And of course, it wasn't as flashy or practical as bows made by the hands of Men or Dwarves.

So honestly, the origins of this bow as a complete mystery to you, much less how it ended up in a place like this. Then again, it was probably a possession of an unlucky adventurer that ended up as the spider's meal.

Considering there was only one person in your party that used a bow, it was only natural for you to pass it to Morgan.

"For me...?" She blinks as she takes the bow. "Huh..."

You tilt your head. She didn't seem happy.

"No, it's not that! I'm really grateful!" Morgan blushes a bit. "It's just that... this bow feels... familiar? I'm not sure how to describe it..."

And that's when you notice a pair of wolf ears protruding from the top of Morgan's head.

What's cuter: her wolf ears going through her hood, or making little tents?

"GAAAAH!" Morgan shrieks as her ears shoot straight up. Her hands immediately shoot to her head and she finally feels her new ears for herself. "W-w-w-what's going on!?!?"

"Cooooool!" Nino's eyes sparkle. "It looks like that new bow of yours has transmogrifying properties!"

"Is that... a tail?" Naru raises an eyebrow.

"WHAT." Morgan turns around and sure enough, there's a large, bushy wolf tail protruding out from her back.

That's when Romulus pokes his head out of Nino's pack and starts yipping happily.

"It's not cute, Romulus!" Morgan snaps and then pauses.

"Did you... did you just TALK to Romulus?" Narua gasps.

"COOOOOOOL!" Nino's eyes somehow sparkle even more. "This bow has some seriously high level magic baked into it! I'm SOOOOOOO jealous, Morgan!"

"This... this is just too much." Morgan whimpers.

You simply pat her on the head again and give her a thumbs up. You actually like her new look.

"W-well, if you don't have a problem with it..." Morgan mumbles. "I guess I can figure out how to get used to this.

"Anyways, I think we reached the end of this branch of the Ruin." Naru points out. "I don't see any other exit out of this room."

"Aw, I completely lost track of the time." Nino yawns. "It's so hard to tell when you're underground like this."

"It's probably near sundown already, if not well past it." Morgan's ears twitch. You have to fight the urge not to pinch them. "Perhaps we should just camp out down here?"

You point upwards. Perhaps it was best to return to the surface. Who knew what sort of threat could ambush you down here.

"Good point." Morgan nods, pulling her hood back over her head to cover up her new ears. "And no more lip from you, Romulus."

Romulus whines and then withdraws back into Nino's backpack.

Yeah, this was going to take some getting used to.

However, as you and your group begin making your way to the exit, you find your way blocked by an individual, shrouded in darkness.

"Heeeeeeey, so it looks like you guys are pretty tough, huh?"

The voice was definitely female, but tinged with a familiar accent. Was this stranger from the Oriental Kingdoms?

"What's it to you?" Morgan growls, her grip on her new bow tightening.

"Well, you see, I'm in a bit of a jam." The stranger chuckles. "I was sorta using this place as something of a hideout, and a bunch of bount- errrr, bandits come barging in to the place!"

"And how is that our problem?" Naru grunts.

"Y'see, I'd rather not be caught by these people, so I was wondering if you could help me out here!" The stranger explains. "You don't have to kill them or anything, just distract them long enough for me to slip past them! If you do that, I'll owe you all a really big one!"

"I don't trust her at all." Morgan growls.

"Me neither." Naru grumbles.

"But she seems real nice!" Nino blinks.

Romulus, for his part, doesn't seem to be growling or acting up. Perhaps this stranger was being genuine?

You motion for the stranger to come closer, into the light so that you could get a better look at her.

"Oh, well, I suppose it's kinda rude getting into a deal and not showing myself!" The stranger laughs before stepping forward.

And standing before you is a girl wearing light cloth and leather armor, adorned with various short swords, daggers, and other small items that would normally be associated with rogues, thieves and assassins. Not exactly the most trustworthy of people, but the wide smile on her face seemed genuine.

What also drew your eye was that the girl's hair seemed to be a half and half mix of black and pink. Rather unusual to see.

"Anyways, the name's Niko!" The stranger laughs. "I guess you can say I'm sorta a runaway princess!"

"What...?" Morgan blinks in surprise, lowering her bow.

"A princess..." Naru pauses as her eyes flash.

"I knew going to this Ruin was a good idea!" Nino cheers. First giant spiders, Morgan getting cuter, and a runaway ninja princess? THIS IS SO COOL!"
