We are Sirena Le Doux and we seek revenge against our former master. So far, we've grown powerful enough to become the Witch Queen, but there is much more to learn. With our list of allies and teachers ever expanding, we won't stop until we've reached the top, because that's where our former master waits.

Having gone through the caverns of Bad Luck Mine and accidentally unleashed our ancient moon elf ancestor, we now find ourselves looking towards the future with uncertainty. We must now decide what to do next...

Forgot to edit the story part from last time. Should be:

>Having sent out our revenant agents to gather intelligence, we now set our sights on the upcoming heist by a master thief. Having assimilated all the knowledge of her sister, we know intimate details of the heist and the thief herself, and plan to foil it in a way that most benefits us. But first, someone's been missing and it's been gnawing at you for a moment now...

As you sit upon your throne, reflecting on both your successes of late and how your plans regarding the upcoming heist are coming together, you narrow your eyes and say, "What do you mean, she isn't here?"

Your butler, Sheldrake, stands still as a statue as he explains, "She was last here little more than a day ago and has not returned since."

This news causes you to lean back in your dark throne and tap your fingers on the obsidian armrests. 'Where are you, Faye? Not on this plane, which means I cannot teleport back to you, and not on our prime plane either, because I already tried! Nobody has seen her and she hasn't left a note, much less a word with anyone as to her whereabouts.'

"Perhaps, your majesty, she is conducting some other business, elsewhere?" the pale man offers with a raised brow.

'Yes, but what?' You find yourself growing impatient. 'I remember well the time that Faye went off on her own and made a deal... But she's learnt her lesson, hasn't she? I should trust her.' Then, a knawing in the back of your brain: 'No! I can't trust her, she's me! What if she is enacting some scheme against me in retribution of my superior position as the prime twin?'

You shake your head and manage to calm down slightly. 'Now now, Sirena, you're being paranoid... But paranoia could keep one alive. Alive, yes, but without any trusted friends...' You purse your lips and quickly come to a decision.

>Trust Faye; she'll return on her own.
>Use divination to at least find out where she is, just in case.

Immediately you proceed down to the Divining Pool, where Xiax'zas the Lich waits. She notes your arrival with her usual level of enthusiasm; that is, none at all.

"My queen. I have been informed that you require assistance."

"I wish to locate my other self. Do you know where she has gone?"

"Yes, I do."

'Well, that's surprising,' you think as you raise your brow. "Really? She told you?"

"I assisted her in use of the pool prior to her leaving. She wished to scry upon several locations to gather information on them before leaving."

"Tell me of them, immediately."

At first the lich is immobile, but then she tilts her head slightly. "She did not tell you, my mistress? How interesting."

"Never mind the details. Just show me where she has gone to."

Slowly, she raises a hand over the silvery water, but does nothing with it. "I would like to make a request in turn."

You narrow your eyes. "That isn't how this works. You serve me because I hold your phylactery. Now serve."

"I have done so, and continue to do so, unwillingly. Perhaps we needn't be so... unnegotiable. I could willingly serve you, my Witch Queen."

"Yes, but I would still hold your phylactery," you remind her. "So whatever you are about to suggest, remember that I could always force you to do it regardless."

"Of that I am well aware... my mistress." She turns her hand, palm facing upwards. "What I ask would place me in your debt, beyond the superficial debt of owing my current continued existence to your kindness and generosity." Though she speaks in monotone fashion, there is more than a bit of sarcasm laced within those last few words. "If you would but hear me."

"Go on, then. I'm short on time and getting short on patience."

"I wish to be cured of my lichdom."

You raise a brow. "You know... Some people are vampires, but few are rarely vampires by choice. The same could be said of werewolves or other lycanthropes. I've never heard of an unwilling lich; you did this to yourself, did you not?"

"I did. I was fully aware of the consequences and did so regardless. It was my intention to reverse the process after I had obtained what I desired: the title of Witch Queen."

"And yet, doing so singled you out to me, causing me to track down your phylactery and force you to assist me in winning it," you smile. "Ironic, isn't it?"

"That irony has not been lost on me. Mistress."

"But do continue, I'm curious. How does one reverse the process?"

"I have the knowledge of many necromantic rituals, including bringing those back to life who have given it up. Re-infusing the soul from a phylactery back into mortal form."

"Indeed... But that would also remove my primary means to control you, now, wouldn't it?"

She is quiet at first. "As I said, I would be in your debt."

"Yes, you would..." You walk around the pool and approach her. "And how would you repay me, exactly? Unwavering service, loyalty and unquestioning obedience? For some reason I find myself... doubtful."

"You already have the title. You have proven yourself superior."

You stop directly in front of her. "Don't start with flattery now; it doesn't suit you. I know how it pains you to be my slave, a victim of your own plot to succeed. That which you thought would bring you victory instead became a prison, a permanent scythe hanging over your neck. One thing I don't like it," you snap your fingers, "you're gone. And you hate that."

She doesn't reply, but maintains eye contact with her dark pupils staring back into yours.

"So, what is my answer?" you say, and tell her...

>Prove yourself to me first, as I have deemed with the other revenants.

Ah. I was too late. Okay, so here's my thoughts.

Obviously, I don't trust her. She's proven herself to be ambitious, and somewhat dangerous. Do I think she'd be willing to serve us once the noose around her neck is loose? Yes- but only for as long as it takes to slip it around our own. That said, I'm wondering if she'd try some other way to get free if we declined her. Especially with how she acted just know with Faye's little excursion.

I think actual loyalty is useful in peons, and not just blind or unwilling servitude. Allows for intelligent and lateral thinking, and a drive being either of the former don't quite foster.

Knowing our power in comparison to hers, and all that other stuff...?

I think we should free her. Just do it and say absolutely nothing. If he asks why, then don't respond. Let her psych herself out.

Of course we'll grant her a guard that she'll need since she's not immortal anymore. We both know what it's actually for, though, if she does try anything funny.

"You'll have to prove yourself to me, as with the other revenants."

"I am not a revenant."

"I am aware. But the same rules apply, my dear." You fold your arms and cock a brow. "Tell me, though: you don't like being a lich?"

"I find the experience hollow."

"Easy enough to understand why," you say, bringing up a hand and touching the normal side of her cold face. "Flesh that does not feel, lungs that cannot be filled with air. A mind craving that which it has lost... sensation. Smells, tastes... touch." You feel a strand of her long, black hair. "I can see that you were quite beautiful once. Was that a price of the ritual, sacrificing half of that beauty to become what you are?"

She doesn't reply, and so you press onwards. "What do you think when you are alone? How much time do you spend each day dwelling on your mistake, regretting your choice? Wishing that things had turned out different?"

Again, she says nothing.

"I see," you say with a smile, wondering if she would be crying right now if she possessed working tear ducts. "Show me Faye."

Wordlessly she waves a hand over the pool. The silvery, mirror-like surface ripples and changes into a visage of what looks like some kind of plantation... in hell. A burning red sky, scorched fields and rivers of lava with mountains of fire in the distance can be seen. You are looking upon an elaborate mansion with glowing yellow windows and black walls, covered in spikes and other jagged things, while still maintaining the look of a regal structure; almost like a kind of fiendish yet rustic charm.

'Fiendish yet rustic charm... Wait, could it be?'

Sure enough, upon the porch of this mansion, sits none other than Angelo DeVille, drinking from a tall glass of lemonade, and sitting alongside him is Faye.

'Again she does behind my back, and AGAIN with him!'

You lean down to the pool and listen. Faye is the first to speak, though clearly most of their conversation is already done with.

"Once more I must thank you for your hospitality," she compliments him. "Truly the highest class in hellscape."

"If there is one thing I will absolutely no abide, it's the inability to make a guest comfortable in my home," he says with a smile. They clink glasses together and drink. "And as for that matter you raised earlier, consider it already done."

"I very much appreciate it, and I know that Sirena will as well."

"Do pass along my sincerest of well-wishings to her; the girl seems so busy these days. The stress of it all must be getting to her."

"Oh, I think it is. That's why I'm hoping she'll appreciate the surprise."

'Surprise?' you think. 'What surprise? WHAT IS SHE PLANNING?!' You feel your hand start to tighten into a fist, but then you are struck with realization: are you angry at her for going behind your back, or angry at yourself for how paranoid you are acting? What if she simply has a legitimate surprise in store for you?

'No! No, it can't be. She's plotting something, she's got some kind of a scheme going on. I know she does. She has to.'

As Faye gets up, Angelo asks, "Oh, ask her if she's read that book I gave to her yet. I'd be ever so hurt if she hasn't."

'The book... The Malevolent Articles of Senesil the Sinister, wasn't it?'

"I don't think she has, I'm sorry to say. I brought it up to her not too long ago and it seems like it hasn't been opened."

He puts a hand over his heart. "What a terrible shame. She probably doesn't trust me. Ah, well."

"It's okay. I wouldn't take it personally, she's slow to trust anyone after getting betrayed like she did."

"And what of you? Weren't you also betrayed?"

She gives him an evil grin. "Of course I was; but that was another world. I'm just having fun while I'm here."

He tips a cigar in her direction. "I can certainly understand that."

She gives him a slight bow and walks away from the house, where she begins to conjure up a portal.

I mean of course she's likely planning something, but the key is to not let that ruin your current plans. The crafty villain is one that takes into account possible betrayal, and makes it so that they win anyway even if said betrayal comes to fruition. Plan AROUND the possibility, not just FOR it.

Your lip quivers slightly as you think about what to do next. You look up at Xiax'zas. "Follow her."

"I won't need to," the lich coldly replies. "She's coming here."

'Returning to Aran?' You stand up. "Then I'll see her myself."

As you turn to leave, the lich says, "It is all rather interesting, isn't it? It seems you don't even trust yourself." You look back at her. "It's a good thing she doesn't know the extent of it."

"Do try and remember who holds your phylactery. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you almost just forgot."

You leave her and return to the throne room, where you see Faye entering from an opposite hallway. Her green eyes light up upon seeing you and she rushes over. "Sirena! I feel like it's been ages." She throws you into a hug and a kiss, the passion of which surprises even you. Sheldrake stands off to the side, unfeeling and unexpressive.

When she breaks the kiss, she says, "So, what have you been up to?"

"The usual," you reply. "Before I get into it... what about yourself?"

"I've been around," she says rather flippantly, approaching her throne and sitting on it. As she crosses her legs, she goes on, "But not much here or at home. I've been scouring several contacts I've made of late, engaging in research on a number of topics."

"Oh?" you say, sitting in your throne and crossing your leg as well. "Do go on."

"It's nothing too fascinating and I've yet to make any significant progress towards getting home, but I have been making some new friends on several other planes of existence. Possibly useful to have should we find the need."

"It's good to see that you are branching out," you comment. "I have as well, though on the mortal world."

She smiles. "See? This is why we work so well together. I handle the extraplanar stuff while you focus on the prime plane. Our combined resources will soon stretch across whole worlds!"

'Indeed... My dear twin.'

You lightly scrape against the armrest of your chair. "Well, I must tell you, I have a plan that will secure us new allies and assets in the north. A heist by a master thief is happening in a few short days, and we will foil it, gaining not only the gratitude of the high elven nobles it is targetting, but also the service of the thief herself."

"Oh, sounds juicy. How so?"

"One of the competitors whose soul I captured during the Black Gauntlet was the thief's sister. The dark elf."

"The one whose memories you sapped. So that's how you know?"

"I have all the details right up here," you say, pointing to your forehead. "Ben and Amber will take out the werewolves she is allied with, while you and I attend a masked ball. They are after a rare diamond ring, but they won't be expecting or counting on us to interfere."

"I like this," Faye says, rubbing her hands together. "What role are we to play?"

"We shall be guests at the ball, and when the time is right, we will force the thieves to expose themselves without exposing ourselves. We shall let the lord and lady think they were behind the foiling of this plot, with but our assistance. Then, when the thief is captured, I shall appear to her as her sister, free her from confinement -- and brand her."

"I love it! I can already picture what I'm going to wear!"

'I'm glad she's enthusiastic...'

Queen first, then revenants.

The queen, originally a pupa, has now grown into an immature adult. Through various tests it has been determined that the queen will reproduce aesexually, producing clones of herself in different forms; warriors, workers, etc. However, she has been unreceptive to starting a hive here, as conditions are quite different than those usually found in the prime plane.

We have a few options before us.

>Import massive amounts of earth to recreate a suitable hive environment
>Use magic to transform/mutate the ant queen into a shadow creature
>Exert control over the ant queen's mind with magic
>Move the ant queen to another realm

Through the use of a ritual, you and your servitors will be able to infuse shadow magic into the ant queen. This will transform the creature and allow it to adapt to the environment of Aran; it will be as if it were made to exist in your realm. From here it will produce offspring, who will carry on this shadow-trait. They will be obedient to their true queen, the Witch Queen.

Now, having sent out your revenants (except for the memory-wiped Alicia) you could use some more, to replace any if they are lost or betray you.

Travelling up to your private vault in the Umbral Citadel, you look upon the gemstones that hold their souls and decide which to bring about.

There is the catgirl you fought, whom made use of spells of invisibility and other illusion-based tricks. Then there is the fish-woman and the goblin, who were fighting each other before you came along. The orc you remember was particularly surly; but then again, she is an orc. There is also the high elf who gave you a particularly strong run for your money, as she was very gifted in evocation magic.

And then there is the woman from the east, the one who recognized you and had it out for you. You defeated her, of course, and captured her soul. But what to do with her now?

You select the gems containing the catgirl, the fishlady and the orc. Taking them to the sanctum of resurrection, you bring up their corpses from the body bank and have them lay upon large slabs. You know the ritual well by now, and it does not take long to put their souls back into their bodies.

The revenants awaken and are marched to the throne room to swear fealty to you and Faye.

"You were defeated at the Black Gauntlet, and it is only by my good will that you are given another chance at life through service to the Witch Queens," you explain to them. "If have given you this opportunity, and I can take it away much more easily. If you are loyal and deserving of reward for the tasks that I assign you, you will be given your true life back; flesh and blood. If you are not, I have other things I could use your soul for." You look upon the three of them, giving each a glance one at a time, before you raise your hand. "If you object, I would advise speaking now. You would save all of us time."

Surprisingly, the orc is the first to kneel. "You defeated me and claimed my soul. That means I am your servant."

You raise a brow. "If I recall correctly, you once told me that you would not be my slave. And you spat at me."

The orc averts her eyes. "I was being proud. My people recognize that the spirits of the dead serve those who slew them. I am dead, and that means I must serve, otherwise I am nothing. My name is Ushugna."

A smile finds its way to your lips. "I like the sound of that. And what of you two?"

The fishwoman looks at the other two, then kneels. "I am not strong enough to resist you," she admits. "Even that goblin was getting the better of me..."

"Why were you at the competition, then?"

"Unfortunate circumstances," she says in her strange, filtered-like voice. "And I met an unfortunate end."

"Perhaps so, but you now have another chance to regain your life. What is your name?"

"Nebulia," she answers.

Finally, the catgirl. She is silent, but then kneels, avoiding eye contact. "And you?" you ask.

"Sumiko," is all she says.

"Very well. You shall be put to work in the citadel, for now. When such time comes that I have further use for you, work in the realms beyond, you shall know it and be summoned forth before us. Now go."

Sheldrake leads them away. Faye leans over and says, "I like that orc!"

"You like orcs in general," you reply with a smirk, remembering her romp with Romil.

This new champion is marched into the palace. He wears dark armor from head to toe, plate mail, and carries a sword and shield. Sheldrake announces him to you.

"This is the champion known as Vorkath. He is the greatest of the warriors amongst the shades of Aran, having proven himself in a recent tournament. Not all shades live to compete, and some serve you more faihtfully than others, but never has there been a greater warrior nor one so dedicated to his queens."

The knight in dark armor kneels before the thrones, bowing his head. "I wish only to serve the Witch Queens in any way they would see fit."

You look down upon him and ask, "What have you to offer us?"

"My sword, my shield, my loyalty and my life," he swears. He takes out his blade, a dark metal with a blue aura, and places it in front of him. "This blade has slain countless denizens of the darkness, and through their deaths it has been made more powerful. I name it Shadowsteel, for it can cut the shadows of night."

"A bold claim. But is it the sword that makes you a champion, or you?"

He looks up. "Even without my blade I am a master of combat. If my queens desire it, I wouldn't draw it ever again."

"I doubt such a thing will be necessary," you reply. You look at Faye to confer what position would best suit this dark champion.

"You shall be the captain of our guard. I want you to oversee the recruitment and training of a capable force that will protect the Umbral Citadel and us from any form of assault or infiltration. Understood?"

"It shall be my honor, my queens." He rises and walks out.

Faye leans over. "Look at us! A captain of our very own guard. Exciting!"

You nod at her, then look at Sheldrake. "About this matter on spreading worship of us... Describe it to me."

"One of the many cults in Aran has been preparing for a role of infiltration. They are very near completion of their plans; they only ask where they could best serve you."

"They would not be detected?"

"It is their intention to slowly integrate into a society so as not to attract attention; upon becoming members of this society, they will begin to draw others into your worship. They know how dangerous this could be, for both yourselves and them, and so they are going to take as few risks as possible."

"Highvale," you tell him. "That is where my nemesis lies. It is where, eventually, all of my attention will be focused when the time comes to enact my revenge."

"As you desire. I shall send word to them immediately. Were there any other matters you wished to discuss?"

"This market issue... I admit, I am not much of an economist. But what seems to be the primary cause of the issue?"

"Trade is limited. Entrance into Aran is tightly controlled; this limits goods and services. In turn this leads to lengthy periods of low trade, then short bursts of high trade. The times between these bursts are never set, and it takes much to make it happen. As such, Aran does not have a very stable mercantile system upon which to base an economy."

"We could do away with money entirely," Faye suggests.

"What, and have chaos where nothing has value?" you reply. "I think not. Besides, at least one of those temples contributes significantly almost all of its financial gains. More money in our realm means more money in our pockets, which means more assets available for purchase in our quest."

"You have a good point," Faye accepts. "But still, without a dedicated foreign trader... Say, I know someone." You give her a low glare. "Angelo."

"We can't trust Angelo."

"He's a businessman. He'd be able to establish a much stronger trade route with our realm."

"We have little in the way of natural resources," you point out.

"Not entirely," Sheldrake replies. "What we do have plenty of is people. This Angelo may be interested in labor or soldiers."

"Exactly!" Faye agrees.

You lean back in your chair and think. 'Do I dare reach out to that devil, when I already know that Faye has been meeting with him behind my back?'

'Perhaps I can turn this into an opportunity to make Angelo vulnerable in case I need it to be so,' you think. "Very well Faye, we shall make a deal with him. But I'll want to be there to hash out the details."

"I'll set up a meeting!" she replies.

"You know how to reach him?" you ask in a tone that does not betray your knowledge.

"I'm sure I know where to look," she replies in an equally innocent tone. "He's probably got a home somewhere on one of the more fiendish planes."

"Most likely..." You turn back to Sheldrake. "We will make it so. I don't wish to discuss any further issues on Aran at the moment."

He bows. "Your majesties." He then straightens and leaves.

As Faye gets up to go do her own business, you can't help but think to yourself, 'So, now she's lying directly to my face about not knowing how to contact Angelo and where he is. All for some... 'surprise.' I hate surprises. If this is something bad, I'll have to be prepared...'

You rise from your throne and proceed towards the teleportation circle, taking you back to your tower. It is rather late in the evening, with the sun just barely vanishing beneath the horizon, and the tower is strikingly silent. With Merriam and Kay gone north to Youngwater, that leaves Ben, Amber, Alex, Bargum, and Xerro, as Faye has taken the three goblins to Aran for more permanent quartering after some issues with the smellier one.

Curiously, Ben and Amber are nowhere to be seen, which is odd considering their training is usually concluded by this point. You briefly search around the tower before deciding to use a combination of divination and the mark you have placed upon him to track them down. They are north, not very far, and bathing after a hot day of hard training. Or at least, that might have been their initial intent, but other motivations clearly rose to the surface after they got into the water.

You can hardly blame Ben; he must miss his sister, after all, and with Amber being the only other redhead around she must be relishing his more focused attention. You spy upon them from a distance, glimpsing them in the water as they hold onto each other. What is going on beneath the water is not hard to guess at, given the look on her face as she clutches onto his backside and rests her head on his shoulder.

'He's becoming quite skilled at this,' you note; it seems his training is paying off in more ways than one.

With patience and a good book, you wait for them to return to the tower, which they do in about an hour's time. You close the book as Ben opens the door and walks in, with Amber right behind him.

"How was the water?" you ask him.

"Great!" he immediately replies, and Amber elbows him in the gut. "I mean, uh, we were just, you know, cooling off after training."

"Of course," you say with a knowing smile. "Tell me, Amber, you're a bit less green than Ben when it comes to the many monsters of the world -- what dealings have you had with werewolves in the past?"

"Werewolves? I've never fought any. Fought a werebear once, though."

"How did that go?"

"I was only able to kill him because he was eating another member of my party," she admits, looking away.

"Well, hopefully nothing of the sort will happen this time, because word has reached me of a group of werewolves in the north that need to be dealt with."

"I could fight werewolves," Ben says, but Amber holds up a hand.

"What's in it for us?"

"Fame and money," you reply. "These particular werewolves are the lynchpin of a plot by a thief to steal a valuable diamond ring from a high elven family. That kind of prestige could do wonders for our reputation, and the coin they'd throw our way certainly wouldn't hurt."

"I say we do it!" Ben says, clenching a fist. Again, Amber holds up a hand.

"We'll need supplies, first and forement being silver weapons. We currently don't have those. The only bit of silver we have are some coins and this," she indicates the silver belt buckle she is wearing.

"I'll secure you the supplies you'll need," you assure her. "What else?"

"Well, werewolves, so... Wolfsbane, holy symbols and a priest to use them. But we've already got at least two of them, I think."

"Alex and Bargum could accompany you. I have every confidence in their abilities." You look over at Ben. "But don't get too excited and end up being reckless, now -- you're no good to us dead."

"Right, right," he nods. "Don't worry about us. At the rate we've been training and taking down monsters, these wolves will be dead meat when we're through with them!"

After conferring with Amber about what the group will need and giving her enough coin to secure as much as she is able from Bridge Town and her new guild, you proceed upstairs. You politely knock on Alex's door and come in at his beckoning; he is with the dwarf runepriest Bargum and was in the middle of a lesson when you enter.

"Mary!" he says, bouncing off his chair and skipping over to give you a hug. You place a hand on his head as he snuggles your belly.

"Lad, we're not done yet," Bargum says, but he nods respectfully in your direction.

"Come over and see," Alex says, taking your hand and leading you over. You sit down on the bed as Alex shows you a book Bargum is teaching him from; it contains many ancient runes and symbols from a variety of cultures. Elven, dwarven, draconic, divine, primordial and more. Were you so inclined you would learn more, as it is a broad and fascinating school of study with lots of historical relevance in regards to the languages and cultures the runes have been handed down from.

"I'm glad you're learning new things," you say to the boy with a smile.

"Aye, the laddie is a sharp learner too," the dwarf adds. "Pickin' it up a lot quicker 'n I ever did."

"It's not so hard. There's a kind of geometry to it. Here, Mary, look at this:," he says as he opens up one of the pages, "see? This rune here has fifteen characters, arranged in the circle, but on the outside there are twenty-four. Fifteen times twenty four makes three-hundred and sixty, as in degrees in a circle! The more complicated ones match up with math on numbers like seven-hundred and twenty, and--"

"I believe you," you assure him. "But I have come with other news. We're going to be heading north soon, to face a pack of werewolves."

"Werewolves?" Alex says, and his smile fades. "Oh... I see." He places the book back on the table.

Bargum stands up. "I best get me hammer," he says, excusing himself from the room.

As he leaves, you look back at Alex and notice how uneasy he suddenly seems; his body language isn't exactly hiding it well.

Taking his hand, you guide him to sit next to you where you start slowly stroking his long blonde hair. "What's wrong?" you ask in a comforting, motherly tone.

"It's just... I have reservations about fighting lycanthropes. They're people who are cursed, and sometimes they cannot control what they do, so to exterminate them for crimes they cannot help... They're not like the usual kinds of monsters, or giant animals we fight." He looks up at you, unsure of what to make of it.

"Well, some might consider death a release from such a terrible curse preferable to going on," you offer.

"Maybe, but how can we be sure?"

"Perhaps they might deserve it. What if they are wild, lawless folk, who are just as vile as the beast within them? I have heard of those afflicted by lycanthropy having lost themselves to their primal lusts, transformed or not."

"Would they be the same if they were cured, though?"

"Do you think you could cure them?"

"I... I don't know. I've never tried such a thing. But... perhaps we could save their souls as well?"

You look into his eyes and smile once more. "Such a caring child, wanting to save them. That's what I like about you, Alex, you always try to find hope in every situation."

He beams. "It is found in the teachings of the First Faith."

"I'm proud of you," you say, leaning down as he blushes. You put a hand under his chin and tilt up his head so as to kiss him, and as you do you prepare to use your magical kiss to make him think less about trying to save the werewolves. But then you hesitate, your lips still on his, and wonder if he may be right...

'Eh, it's just some werewolves. Who's going to miss them?'

Closing your eyes, you pour both your magic and tongue into the kiss, deepening it and bringing him under your thrall. Placing both hands on his cheeks, you spend a moment more getting him ready to influence him -- perhaps a moment more than necessary, but enjoyable nonetheless.

You pull back and look at his dazed expression as you whisper, "I don't think you need to worry about those werewolves, Alex. There are far worse things in the world." You brush his hair as you add, "We needn't concern ourselves with them or what happens to them."

"You're right," he nods, slowly blinking. "Mary? May I... have another?"

"A polite boy deserves it," you say, leaning back down to do just that. He melts like butter in your arms as you take him into your lap to gently rock him.

Several moments pass in sweet embrace before you part. He lets out a soft sigh before asking, "Mary, are you ever worried about the... darkness inside of you?"

"What do you mean?"

"You don't think it's, well, influencing your behavior at all?"

"No, of course not," you assure him and he immediately believes you without further question. "Why do you ask?"

"I was just thinking about... well, how you treat me. I don't think it's wrong! I like it! I was just worried."

"Well, don't be. Trust me completely. This is your home now, and we are your new family. And in this family, we are very close."

"I understand, mom--" He is cut off by your lips returning to his.

After leaving Alex in bed, you proceed downstairs to see Xerro outside one of the stairwell windows. He is outside the tower, sitting on a rock, apparently by himself.

Out of curiosity, you leave the tower and approach him. There you see that he is staring up at the night sky.

"Xerro? What are you doing out here?"

"Xerro counting stars," he replies.

"Seems rather pointless. How high can you count?"

"Not high, but Xerro count them! Someday, I fly to them. Fly to all of them!"

"As a dragon, correct?"

"Yes, yes!" He jumps up on the rock and points up at them. "Kobolds tell stories of the sky-ocean, and dragons sail on it with their wings. All kobolds want to sail it too!"

"That's the astral sea," you tell him. "A divine realm that holds all of the domains of the gods. I could see some particularly ancient dragons able to fly through it."

"When Xerro gets wings, I fly to each one."

"Getting off the ground is the first part, and you're not going to do that by counting stars."

"Xerro knows," he replies. "But right now, can do nothing. So for now, wait and count."

You smirk and fold your arms. "What if I told you there was a school of magic that could change you into a dragon? Or at the very least, give you wings."

He looks back. "Yes? You know?"

"I don't... but I could learn. Transmutation is a school I have dabbled in here and there, but nothing on that level. A spell of such magnitude would require a lot of preparation and resources..."

"But can be done?"

"Yes... I think so. It's just a matter of learning how. Besides, what would you even do as a dragon, besides flying to stars? What would you do once you got there?"

He jumps up and down, excited at the prospect. "Xerro would be best dragon! Biggest and baddest, and fly everywhere! Breathe fire, be worshipped like king by kobolds! Kidnap princesses and hold them in towers, sleep on piles of gold so big they cannot be counted!"

"Such lofty goals," you say in an amused tone. "Perhaps one day, eh? But for now, let's sleep."

You take him back to the tower where you and the others all settle in for the night.

Morning, two days out from the heist. You awaken early with a loud yawn as you step out of bed; in the distance, you can hear bells ringing. You were alone last night, as Ben is still maintaining the illusion that Amber is currently his only woman, so you don't feel the need to immediately dress.

You walk towards a nearby window, drawn by the sound of the bells, expecting to smell the usual smells of morning -- fresh dew, summer wind, perhaps breakfast cooking downstairs -- but instead you smell something else, something acrid. Something burning.

Looking westwards, your eyes widen as you take in the sight of a large tower of smoke rising... from the direction of Bridge Town!

Realization immediately strikes you. 'Bridge Town is under attack!'

You rush to dress yourself as you sound the alert to your companions however you can, by magic or knocking on their doors, but Ben and Amber will need a few minutes to armor up.

You quickly instruct Bargum to keep Alex here and ensure that nobody tries to hurt him or the tower. The dwarf agrees, though Alex protests, "I want to help!"

"If we need you, I will send for you," you tell him.

As for Amber and Ben, you instruct them to get to town as quickly as possible. You step outside and transform into a raven, taking flight towards the town to scout out the situation. It becomes apparent early on that the town is being attacked by raiders; there is fighting in the streets, and several buildings are being lit on fire. Merchants are fleeing and taking shelter in buildings with their goods as warriors from the new guild attempt to fend off the attackers.

You fly down lower and get a good look at them, and realize they are orcs. Barbaric, bloodthirsty and savage orcs from the southwest, tearing through the town. One of them bursts through a wooden wall while carrying two torches; you spy another hurling a man off of a rooftop.

'Orcs... at least two dozen of them, maybe three! How did they get here?!'

At that moment, a light goes on in your head, and you remember words from long ago; the barbarians from the west were warring with the orcs. Though the barbarians were hostile to the kingdom Bridge Town falls under, they acted as a very good buffer for the roving groups of orcs who make their way far from their home territories, north and north-east.

And now, with the barbarians gone...

You land on a rooftop and transform back into your human self. Looking down upon the carnage, you feel a great anger swell within you. You've invested so much time and energy into this place, rigged an election, started businesses! These brutish greenskins would take it from you?

'Not if I have anything to say about it!'

You attempt to locate a leader amongst the orcs, thinking to use thralldom upon him, but to no avail. Their leader, whomever it may be, is not immediately apparent to you.

Down below, several guards attempt to fend them off. The orcs manage to push them back before the sudden arrival of the paladin Amanda Lightguard. She charges the orcs with her mace, glowing golden with holy light, and begins bashing away at them while using her shield to block their counterattacks.

The guards are having a difficult time focusing; some are attempting to get people to safety while others are taking on more orcs. You watch as three orcs charge towards the town hall, breaking through the front door. 'Mayor Jed! He'll be in danger!'

You attempt to stop the orcs before they can enter the building, but it is too late. You mutter a curse and quickly levitate down to the doorway while the battle rages behind you.

>>1717550

The three orcs are tearing through the place, not looking for anything specific other than fun, and so they are caught unawares by you when you raise your hands and cast a spell of stonish blood upon them. They grunt in pain as they are slowed by the sudden growths in their bloodstream, one of them letting out a cry as he falls to one knee.

That's when the door to the mayor's office is kicked outwards and Jed emerges, holding a large axe.

"No appointments today!" he shouts, swinging the heavy blade down onto the back of one's neck, severing his head. You quickly blast the other two with a few arcane bolts, keeping them distracted as Jed finishes them off.

He approaches you. "Mary! We need to stop these damn invaders!"

"I'm right beside you," you tell him as you both step out onto the street. The fighting continues as another group of orcs, having ransacked the merchant stands, prepare to leave with spoils they have taken.

'I think not.' Raising your hands, you conjure forth a web and cast it before the fleeing orcs; they run into it like flies and find themselves trapped. Some of them drop their gains to attempt to free themself, only to end up more trapped than before when they grab the sticky strands. One of them eludes the web and runs in the opposite direction; you throw out both hands and yank him back with a forceful noose, allowing Amanda to finish him off with a blow to the skull.

A great noise is heard, an explosion like that of a cannon, and a group of nearby orcs goes flying. You turn towards the water and see that Urist, the dwarf engineer on the deck of the steamboat, has turned his weapons upon them! He fires another cannon shot, again breaking up a group of the invaders.

As Jed finishes off one of the orcs in the web with his axe, you look towards the other end of town, and you notice some of the orcs attempting to break down the doors to your brothel!

A noise alerts you to something going on behind you. Amanda Lightguard shouts as she is picked up and hurled aside with one arm. You then catch a glimpse of the largest orc you have ever seen, standing at least seven feet tall and made of green muscle. The barbarian wields a large axe in one hand, and with one blow he knocks Jed aside.

The orc lets out a mighty roar, which spurs on his underlings. 'I think I found him,' you think to yourself.

>>1717651
>>1717654

Before you can focus on the leader, one of the lesser orcs tackles you from the side, taking you down to the ground. His rancid breath covers your face as he attempts to subdue you; thankfully your hands are still free, and so you are able to cast a spell of grasping tentacles. The writhing apendages emerge from the ground nearby and wrap about his limbs, pulling him off of you.

You roll to the side as he is dragged away, getting up to your feet. That's when you notice Ben and Amber on the scene, having recently arrived. You make eye contact with Ben, who then looks up at the leader of the raiders and charges at him.

'Oh, you fool,' you think as the orc leader sees Ben coming.

>>1717704

In a moment of desperation, you cast the first spell that comes to mind: glitterdust! You focus on the leader, covering him from head to foot in gold dust, blinding him! The leader roars in frustration and swings downwards, missing Ben; your lover dodges the axe and delivers a solid blow on the orc's chest!

>>1717721

Though blinded, the leader knows that his foe is directly in front of him. He brings up an arm and swats Ben down, then brings up a boot and stomps on him. The young fighter lets out a shout as the orc's heavy boot pushes on his plated chest!

>>1717726
>>1717746

Your lips move like lightning and your fingers follow as you rapidly cast two spells, both focused on the leader: swarm of insects and spirit rend! The biting and stinging swarm quickly overtakes him, and your necromantic daily spell takes effect; the leader finds himself unable to react quickly enough to everything going on around him. Amber rushes in and stabs at his leg, forcing him to bring the foot on Ben off.

Just then, you see an orc coming at you from the side. The same one you had stopped with the tentacle, who has apparently cut through them. He roars in fury as he nears you, but then suddenly his eyes go cross and he falls dead before you with an arrow in his head.

At first you think that Kaylessa may have appeared, but it isn't; it's someone else entirely. A strange hooded ranger in the distance approaches up the road, firing a bow as he walks. Each arrow unerringly hits its mark, the head of an orc. One after another they fall down, even the ones who were fleeing the town.

Though you are curious about this new figure, your eyes are drawn back to the leader. Paralyzed, covered in stinging welts and blinded by golden particles, he enters into a rage and finds his second wind; he begins spinning madly about, lobbing in random directions with his axe, one of them cutting a cart clean in half. As Ben gets back up, he and Amber prepare to re-engage when they see an opening...

You try twice to cast a spell of calming emotions upon the orc, though the first time fails due to being distracted when he crashes into the front of the town hall. The second time you are successful, and manage to penetrate his rage. This calms him down and he stands still.

Both Amber and Ben charge, but suddenly the mysterious figure appears upon the orc's back. He didn't run up or climb -- you feel as though you blinked, and there he was. With a strange knife in hand, he jams it into the side of the leader's head, then leaps off as he withdraws it. Ben and Amber both stop in their tracks as the leader wobbles, then falls backwards.

For a moment, all is quiet. The orcs are all dead, and several fires still rage around the area. The figure, apparently not caring for either, approaches Ben and Amber.

"Who are you?" she asks.

He doesn't answer. Instead, he takes out a scroll and opens it, revealing a picture of you -- your true self, along with your name and reward for your capture or death.

"I'm hunting a witch," he says. "Have you seen her?"

Your eyes suddenly grow wide and a chill grows up your spine -- this is the Witch Hunter!

Ben looks at the paper. "No," he says, shaking his head. "I haven't. If you'll excuse me, I have to see to my uncle... And thanks for your help." He breaks away to help Jed.

The man, his face still partially obscured by his hood, looks at Amber. She takes the paper and looks at it. "Sirena Le Doux, eh? Heard of her."

"I have trailed her to this location," he replies. "She may be in disguise."

She looks up. "Really? Well--"

"Amber, I need your help," Ben suddenly interrupts. The girl excuses herself and goes to assist Ben in getting Jed back to the office.

Now the Witch Hunter, once alone, begins to scan his eyes around the area.

'Don't hide, don't vanish, don't act abnormal. Be who you are supposed to be.'

You begin walking towards Ben and Amber, who are assisting with Jed. The hunter's eyes settle on you, and though you make brief contact with him, you inspect Jed's wounds and act as if you are assisting them.

After getting the mayor back inside, Ben gently takes you off to one corner.

"Mary... that man outside. He's--"

You shush him. "I'll handle it. Ben, don't say anything. Not a word. You've done well up until this point. Continue to do so."

He nods and says nothing more, walking back to talk to Jed about organizing efforts to clean up the town and put out fires.

You leave to find the hunter waiting for you. The man's gaze is strangely piercing, but you remain calm.

"Greetings," he says, standing casually. You can't help but notice that, although his pose is relaxed, one hand rests on the end of his sword's hilt. "I have a question for you, if you don't mind."

"I am grateful to you for your assistance with the orcs, good sir, but my magic is needed to help with the fires."

"As it happens, your magic is what makes me curious. There are not many mages in these parts with your level of skill."

"Is this about that bounty you showed Ben?" He nods. "I don't know how much help you expect me to be with you... Mister...?"

Beneah his hood, he smiles. "My name isn't very important. How about yours?"

You pause for half a second. "Mary."

"I won't take much of your time, Mary. But I'd like to know where you learned magic."

"I am self-taught," you reply, and his expression does not change. "Now, if you'll excuse me..."

You begin to walk away from him, keeping your eyes wide open, ready for anything to happen... but nothing does. When you dare to steal a glance backwards, he is gone.

For some reason, that only makes you feel worse. 'Could he know? Surely he would simply attack if he did. He has killed two Witch Queens before me...'

You help Urist, Amanda, Lucia and several guards get the town under control; the fires are put out, the wounded assembled for healing and damage assessed. Several buildings were damaged badly, but none of the orcs made it out, so all goods were able to be returned.

"I just don't know where they came from," Lucia says to you as the two of you survey the bodies being rounded up. "Orcs, this far north? And why?"

"This will undoubtedly attract quite a bit of attention," you say, stealing a quick glace around for the hunter. He is nowhere to be seen. "Perhaps the kingdom will send more men to help protect the town."

"We can only hope. In the meantime, we'll be busy rebuilding the damage..."

After sending for Alex, you assist Amber with gathering the members of the Mercenary Guild and organizing them into teams to help with the town. As for Ben, you send him north to his home, to retrieve Brutus. It does not take long for him to be on the scene.

"It is good to see you, friend," Brutus greets you when you arrive.

"Yes, I'm sorry I haven't made time to come and visit. Have you kept busy?"

"Very," he nods. "Learning new ways to calm down. Sit and think."

"Meditation?"

"Enlightening. I have not felt so calm in such a long time. The pain of my son's passing remains, but it does not roar as loudly now."

"I am glad to hear it. Could you help us?"

The minotaur proves useful in moving several large chunks of debris. Frederick, Amber's second-in-command of the guild, goes to great lengths to try and match the beast-man's pace but isn't able to keep up; Brutus is simply too strong. He works himself into a tired mess before Brutus even takes a break.

When Alex arrives, he wastes no time in healing and blessing the wounded, even performing rights on the dead guards and orcs. Amanda Lightguard quickly takes notice of him.

"Who have we here?" she asks, approaching him. Alex immediately bows to the paladin of his faith.

"Alex Shepherd, ma'am," he answers. "I hope you don't mind that I began the litanies of passage; I know it is proper for the more senior priest to do so..."

"No, no, not at all. Takes the work off my shoulders," she says with a smile. "I haven't seen you around town before. Where have you been hiding out?"

"I live with Mary, at the tower," he tells her. "Just up the road!"

As you listen on, you look over and think, for a brief moment, that you catch a glimpse of the hunter. But when you look, he is gone again. You feel your blood run cold at the thought that he is lurking nearby. 'He must still be around... skulking in the shadows. He's somewhere, I know it. He used some kind of magic earlier to instantly move from one place to another without so much as a flash or any kind of noise... And if he just heard Alex, now he knows where I live.'

After about an hour, things have calmed down somewhat, to the point where a meeting can be held in the mayor's office. Jed reports that he has sent courier down south with word of what has occured in Bridge Town, and expects a reply in a short few days.

"I don't think they were after anything specific," he tells you. The assembled group around you consists of Ben, Amber, Amanda, Lucia, Frederick and Urist. "The most valuable thing near the town is the magic well, and that wasn't attacked."

"So just raiders, then?" Ben says. "But why come this far east for so little?"

"I don't know," Jed honestly replies. "It could have been, simply, that they were just raiders."

"I have my doubts about that," Amanda speaks up. "I was with the paladins when we scoured the lands west of here, lands that once barbarians lived in before a plague wiped them out, of the undead remnants of that very same plague. Those barbarians kept the orcs from travelling further east, but this isn't exactly familiar territory for them. I think someone may have pointed them out to Bridge Town."

Jed strokes his chin. "It's possible, I'll admit. But as far as I know we have no real enemies. Who would do so, and why?"

"They may not have thought we were as strong as we are," Ben offers. "Bridge Town is known for its merchants more than its warriors."

"Don't give yourself too much credit," Amber remarks. "That hunter took out most of them."

He begins, "Sure, but I still--"

"Enough," you cut him off. "So someone may have pointed the orcs towards the town, or not. I think this is a good time to discuss the inadequate defenses that this attack displayed."

Amanda nods. "I have to agree. Something should be done."

You sit back in thought for a moment. "Lucia suggested having more men sent here from the south; I find myself in agreement. Perhaps we could build a barracks for them, a keep; something strong, defensible, made of stone."

Jed seems to like the idea. "Hmm... It's not out of the question. This attack would certainly be good incentive to grant such a request. If more orcs or other such beasts are on the way, more men would possibly make them think twice."

"I'll draft a letter," Lucia suggests.

Jed nods. "Please do; I'm not quite as good with my writing."

"What should we do in the meantime?" Ben asks.

Jed stands up as Lucia walks around the desk. "I suggest going out and helping anyone who needs it. You're the town hero, after all, you should be seen doing such." Jed gives him an affectionate slap on the back and walks him outside.

You briefly confer with Amber, who leaves to return to the guild. As you step outside you look around and notice Alex talking to someone -- someone hooded. Honing in on them in an instant, you approach. They both look up at you as the Witch Hunter stands and removes his hood. "Mary."

"We were just talking about you," Alex says.

"Really..." you say, looking up at the man.

He removes his hood, and for the first time you notice how strikingly and disarmingly handsome he is. Perhaps the hood has some enchantment about it to make him appear more subdued, but now without it you see his shining green eyes, defined cheeks and sharp jaw. His eyes in particular seem to mask something deeper, an intellect you cannot quite guess at -- he may be more clever than you know.

"I think it's very nice that you've taken this boy in," he says with a charming smile. "Forgive me if I seemed somewhat forward earlier. My line of business doesn't exactly afford me many opportunities to socialize."

"Yes, well... As I said before, I don't know how much help we could be to you on your hunt."

"There are not many mages in the area, and after asking around I've lost track of my trail. Alex here was just telling me about someone named... Faye, was it? He says that he does not trust her."

Looking down at Alex, you ask, "Is this true?"

"Well... I've listened to some of the things she's said. And I've seen her performing strange rituals... I was only being honest, Mary, I--"

You interrupt him. "It's alright, Alex." Looking back up at the man, you ask, "You... think she may be your bounty?"

He doesn't exactly nod, but his body language seems positive. "My trail has grown cold here, and the only mages that match the description of my target are you and she."

"Mary isn't Sirena," Alex insists. "She's much too nice for that!"

"Of course," the hunter says, though he doesn't take his eyes off of you. "Still, I should very much like to meet this 'Faye' and see for myself."

"I'm afraid I cannot help you. She's gone away from here."

"It has been a while since she was at the tower," Alex says softly.

He looks at the child for but a moment before snapping his eyes back to yours. "Why did she leave?"

"She said she had what she needed."

"You two were close?"

"We studied some magic together, but I never truly trusted her. She seemed a bit too... unruly."

"I see," he says, letting his words hang in the air for a moment. He seems to be scrutinizing you intensely, though after the moment passes he says, "Well then, I hope she turns back up. Until then, I'll have to continue my hunt." He reaches forward with his hand and you control yourself from pulling away; to do so would bring about suspicion, after all. He takes your hand in his and brings it up to gently kiss. "Pleasant meeting you, Mary."

"Likewise... But I never received your name."

"Perhaps next time," he says with a smile before turning, bringing up his hood and walking away, leaving you standing and watching his back, wondering when that next time will be and if blood will be shed when it comes.

"He seems nice!" Alex says.

"Yes... Very." You take him along and walk back towards the town hall, stealing a glance over your shoulder. Predictably, the Witch Hunter is gone.

After travelling back to the tower, you prepare for another visit to Francis. You teleport over to his tower and walk upstairs, finding the tower quiet.

"Francis?" you call out. You hear some noise upstairs and walk up to his study, only to find him snoring over his desk and drooling on some scrolls.

As he snoozes, he mutters whilst in a dream-like state. "Oh... Oh yeah, baby... Lower... What's that?... You're triplets? And you all want to go at once?... Oh, I can handle that... And I've got something for YOU to handle, too..."

You let out a sigh of disdain and kick his chair, causing him to waken with a startle. "Wake up, loverboy."

He shoots up. "Sirena! I had no idea you'd be--"

You put a hand over his mouth. "No, none of that anymore. We're in super-incognito mode. A man who has killed the two previous Witch Queens was in Bridge Town."

"Does he know it's you?" he asks once you let go.

"I don't know... He's looking for Faye. Of the two of us she was always the less subtle."

"Where's she?"

"Other realms," you say in a low tone. "Talking to people behind my back, making deals I never approved."

"Well, you both share the title, right? She's not exactly your slave."

"I'm aware of that. But I've caught her talking to someone I consider, at best, a rival. At worst, an enemy waiting to catch me in a compromising position."

"I can understand his motives," he says, raising his eyebrows twice. You shoot him a nasty look and he clears his throat. "Sorry, no jokes. So why'd you come here?"

"Orcs attacked Bridge Town."

"What? When? Today?"

"Yes, just earlier. I'm surprised you didn't see the smoke just from looking out your window."

"I was probably sleeping," he says. "I was up late last night dealing with contact issues in Highvale."

"Is there something wrong?"

"A contact of mine tried to feed me bad information. Another one caught wind of it and told me the truth; now I'm trying to figure out why the first one went sour."

"I thought your intelligence network was sound."

"I'm still getting reliable information from several others. But I've burnt a LOT of bridges in my life, alright? Speaking of which, how is Bridge Town? It's not burnt down, right? That'd be awkward."

"No, we were able to save it, partially thanks to this... 'Witch Hunter' who is after me; he appeared and killed many of the orcs, including their leader. He is searching for mages in the area, so you may encounter him. If so, you don't know me."

"I know, I know. Come on. You and I are allies, can't you trust me?"

You let out another sigh. "One can never be too sure."

He reaches forward and takes hold of your hands. "Look, I would never betray you. You and I are in this together, and I'll see it through to the very end. Because I really, really, really want to have sex with you."

You roll your eyes. "Charming."

"Hey, at least I'm being honest," he says with a wink. "But you seem stressed out. Can I get you something? Food, bath, naked massage?"

"What I want is information about this Witch Hunter. See what you can dig up; I want to know how he's been trained, who has hired him, any allies he may have."

"Sure, that works too," he says, somewhat dejected. "What about a blowjob, is that out of the question?"

"Francis..."

"Fine, fine, just a handjob."

"Francis!"

You roll your eyes again and raise a hand, using your ring of minor telekinesis to affect him, focusing on his groin. His eyes go wide and he immediately falls back into his chair, spreading his legs as your finger slowly moves up and down. "Oh, oh wow! This is a new one!" Rubbing a hand across his now-sweaty forehead, he loosens the collar of his robe and lets out a few pants.

It's almost cute, in a revolting kind of way. You reduce the archmage to a shaking mess and leave him with a mess in his pants about ten minutes later. As you walk downstairs towards the teleportation circle, you hear him call out to you from above, "Thanks, baby! That was only the second time a girl made me finish without touching me, honest!"

'Men...' You step onto the circle and are whisked back away to the tower, where you spend the remainder of the day preparing for the heist in a few short days.

>Sleep...

Morning, the day prior to the heist and fancy masked ball held by Lord and Lady Silverwind in the north. Despite the attack, or perhaps because of it, Amber was able to secure silver blades for her and Ben to use, as well as a few anti-lycanthropic charms meant to ward them away and mask their scents.

Aran is the place where you assemble your new dress. Using the bolt of fine cloth threaded with steel, you use your darkweave spell and create a woundrous new outfit, black as raven's feathers yet it shines like blue metal. The dress is light but tough, resistant to tearing and soft to the touch; it hugs your body perfectly, revealing just enough of your creamy skin to entice those whose eyes it catches. For your mask, you use the same spell and conjure a disguise in the shape of a stylized bird, with a long beak that flows over your face and ends in feathers, with two wide eyes through which to gaze.

It is quite the attention-grabbing garb, but at a moment's notice you can blend into the shadows and the magic of the dress will obscure you. While you certainly will do so at a moment's notice, your intention is to get the attention of the party-goers, particularly Lord Silverwind. It shall all play into your plan to foil this heist.

As you finish your spell-weaving, Faye comes upon you, for you had sent servitors to fetch her. She looks you up and down. "I like, I like," she compliments your fine work. "Flawless. Just like us."

"The only way it could be better is if we wore nothing at all."

"Now wouldn't that cause a stir in those high elven loins! Careful, or I might just consider doing so."

"What will you be wearing?"

"I've got something in mind; nothing too fancy. I want to compliment you rather than distract. This is your plan, after all."

"You seem strangely okay with this."

"When we attend a fancy party in my world, I'll be the one who wears the nicer outfit," she giggles and winks.

Let her know he is lurking around the tower for her so he can't see us together.

"We're going to travel to the Silverwind Estate tonight," you inform Faye. "After talking our way inside as guests for the evening and for tomorrow's party, we'll scout the place out. Meanwhile I shall send Ben and Amber on their assignment to slay the werewolves; Bargum will accompany them."

"Sounds good to me. We'll need new disguises, won't we?"

"Indeed. As much as I would like us to go as ourselves, I just had a brush with a hunter on our trail. We can't be so bold, not yet. So, new looks for us both." With a wave of your hand, you conjure up a new appearance, changing your face, eyes and hair.

"Blonde?" Faye asks.

"I thought I would mix it up a bit. What about you?"

"Hmm..." She casts the spell upon herself, choosing a slightly more sun-kissed brunette look, perhaps something more southwestern in flavor. "This will do."

"Excellent. Now, we'll need names, and convincing identities..."

"I shall be... Mathilde Virctoria Beaumont, and you shall be my darker-haired sister Elizabeth. We are of a lower noble family."

"Oh, the lower ones are always the hungriest," Faye says, licking her lips. "They have a taste of the high life, but they lack the station to truly sate all of their desires."

You grin at her as you examine your new hair in the mirror. "Remember not to get TOO into your role at the party -- we must be like surgeons, making only the most precise of cuts into the flesh of the party. We choose our times to approach the lord and lady."

"I'll let you take the lead, and try not to get too carried away. I can't promise I won't! This is going to be fun!"

After checking to ensure that the Witch Hunter was not around the tower, you go back for Faye. Together, along with several servitors disguised as normal servants, you prepare to travel north with a wagon. Normally, Xerro would drive you, but you cannot risk anyone finding out your true selves by identifying a known companion.

The wagon itself is a coach, recently purchased for the occasion. As Faye boards the wagon outside, you provide a map to Ben and Amber, which details the exact whereabouts of the werewolf lord and his pack. They depart as well, riding ahead on horseback while your coach rolls north along the road.

As you pass the river, you realize that this is technically the farthest north you will have ever travelled. You are now leaving the more human-dominated territories and entering the lands of the elves. Though you are still in the country of Dragodia, unified three hundred years ago after the Human-Elf war by marriage between royal families, these lands are still primarily inhabited by elven folk and other fey beings. The further north one travels, and you would find yourself in the domain of the winter elves -- but you are not going so far.

It is not long before you are passing through the city of Youngwater, where not too many days ago Merriam left to attend college. You idly wonder how she is doing, but think that perhaps it would be best not to see her until your task is complete. You could potentially encounter her, though if you keep up your disguise she would not know it.

You decide to make a temporary stop, and see if you can find Merriam. You begin your search at the Bratia College of Elemental Study, a place you have heard of but never seen. It is a large structure, mostly round, with many columns lining its outer walls wrought of white marble and painted red at the top and bottom. Banners displaying the elements of fire, water, earth, lightning and air hang from these pillars, and the school itself seems to be broken up into five wings each following one of these elements.

Gaining entrance to the school is simple enough, especially when you sweet-talk the guards into believing you are simply here to see a friend. As you walk through its halls, you look for your redheaded farmgirl-turned-prospective-mage and discover her attending a class in the lightning wing.

This particular wing is set up like an amphitheater, open to the sky above with many rising rows of seats. You pick out Merriam by noting the contrast of her new green robes and red hair, sitting near the front with a scroll in her hand, apparently taking notes. The instructor, an elder elf wizard, appears to be discussing astronomy and astrology; the lecture is intended to link those studies to divination and weather pattern prediction, with an emphasis on the connecting fibers between these apparently separate schools of research.

The elf concludes that, as it is the middle of the day, not much practical demonstration can take place. He releases his class early on the grounds that they come back this evening, prior to midnight, for such a demonstration. He notes that it will be required for a passing grade. The many students gather their things and begin to leave the theater, heading towards other wings, the library or the gardens nearby to spend the rest of their new free time.

You watch Merriam intently as she smiles and chats with three other students, girls each of them, while walking to the gardens. She seems to be doing very well; she's even made friends, which surprises you somewhat, considering her country bumpkin origins.

'She seems well enough for now,' you decide. 'Time to head north.'

The remainder of the journey proceeds uneventfully, and it is early evening when you reach the manner. The high elves place a priority on art, and their home reflects this, for it is built atop a high forest ridge and only accessible by a stone path lined with lanterns. Elven architecture is a flowing and almost sensuous thing, with wood and stone twisting in unique fashions. Elegant carvings of leaves, water and other earthly motifs can be seen as you and your ‘sister’ ascend the pathway leading to the mansion.

Outside, you are greeted by a housekeeper, a tall elf with an unamused expression. “Good day to you,” he says with slight bow of his head. “I am Ivlisar, keeper of the grounds. Please state your business.”

With a bow, you present yourself. “Mathilde Virctoria Beaumont, of House Beaumont, of Highvale. This is my sister, Elizabeth. We have arrived early for the masked ball, and humbly beseech the Lord and Lady of the illustrious Silverwind family to quarter us for the evening.”

He raises a brow. “Such a thing is typically reserved for those known to the family, and I am afraid I have never heard of you, your sister or your house.”

"Well, it is unusual indeed, but we were hoping that the graciousness of the Silverwind family would--"

The groundskeeper cuts you off. "This is a place of art, a gallery for the refined. We do not allow strangers to roam its halls. I suggest you see yourselves out."

"Now, Ivlisar, where would we be if we never met new people?"

Eyes are drawn to a nearby balcony. There a high elf woman of stunning beauty and silver hair stands, wearing fine jewelry and a white dress. The man bows his head. "My lady. They are not known to us, and not on the list."

"They came all this way. I'll not have them refused until I know they are not worth having as company. Let them inside so that I may greet them."

With that, she turns to walk back inside. Though he is upset by this development, he keeps his composure. "This way." He leads you both inside and your breath nearly catches in your throat as you gaze upon the artworks within. Paintings, statues, tapestries, fine rugs and more, all on display and kept immaculate. Shelves lined with porcelain, grand sets of armor and ornamental weaponry from a great many places, framed trinkets of gold, silver and every jewel imaginable -- this place is a thief’s dream come true.

But the elves here are watchful. There is a staff, and they both clean and keep safe the items. You immediately note no less than five servants in the entry hall, some accompanying Lady Silverwind. She stands out from all of them for her radiant beauty; though she is clearly a few centuries old, she maintains the grace and loveliness of youth.

“Greetings,” she says as you come before her. You and Faye both bow properly, displaying your noble upbringings and knowledge. “You must forgive my staff. They were selected for their roles with the utmost purpose being the protection of this estate, family and its holdings.”

You smile and say, “We are not offended, I assure you.”

“I thought I would see you for myself, and judge if you are worthy of taking our guest quarters for the evening. After all, it would not do well to let just anyone inside, much less stay the evening. There are many valuable things inside this home, and we treat it like a museum. I hope you understand the weight of these words.”

“Long have I desired to gaze upon your collected wonders. I wouldn’t dream of touching or taking a thing, and rob others of the privilege.”

That seems to please her some, as the corners of her mouth turn into a faint smile. “Come, let us retire to a more comfortable room for talk.”

You join her in a nearby room where delicious herbal tea is served. As expected, the platter, cups and kettle all exquisite silver. In addition to this, small foods are available, from fruits to leafy greens and baked bread squares. Lady Silverwind is exceedingly proper yet she carries herself with a relaxed air, as she is accustomed to the noble life. You and Faye, having been raised in the same noble home (just in different worlds), are easily able to match her level of formality.

She initiates conversation, beginning with a few broad topics intended to guage reactions and attitudes. Simple things, such as recent weather, travel conditions and familial history are run through with expected participation on your part. You and Faye play said parts perfectly, speaking when engaged and always remaining polite. Such an interraction is necessary to win her trust without the use of magic; as these are high elves, they may resist such charms and be aware of them if they are used, particularly a trained noble, who could be wearing any amount of enchanted jewelry.

Then, Lady Silverwind brings up a topic you are particularly interested in. "Of course, the most troubling of recent events has shaken the north to its core. The kingdom is up in arms about the kidnapping of the royal princess."

You set down your teacup. "Yes, we have heard of it. As I understand it, it was a moon elf?"

"Indeed. When all of them were thought long extinct. My husband and I have collected several artifacts from the ancient moon elf civilization, but we would gladly trade each and every one of them for the safe return of our beloved princess. She is like a flower that has been plucked from her home garden and taken away to some dark, horrifle place."

"It is a true tragedy," Faye comments. "Have you heard any word on a rescue being planned?"

"The true tragedy is that we know not how. The magic of using moongates was lost long ago. It seems the only person capable of returning the princess is the one who stole her... an unfortunately perfect situation for the kidnapper. That dreadful moon elf could blackmail the royal family for much... but she made no demands."

You slightly change the topic, taking the initiative in the interraction. "You mentioned moon elf artifacts?"

"Several, yes. All elves spring from the same progenitor culture, the moon elves, and so their artifacts are important to our heritage. I'm sure even you understand; I can tell there is some elf blood in you."

You smile. 'More than you know, especially in relevance to this particular moon elf...'

The three of you stand and are taken on a brief tour of some of the art galleries incorportated into the mansion. Great works by painters, sculptors and other artists can be seen, and your host is very familiar with the history of each piece. But it is when you reach her inner sanctum that you are shown the moon elf artifacts.

Each is placed upon a pedastal, protected in a glass bubble. Some are stone tablets, one a knife, a few strange glass pieces, but one... one catches your eye immediately.

"What is this?" you ask, and Lady Silverwind approaches. You gaze upon a glowing blue gem bound in silvery metal strands, hung on the end of a flawless thin chain.

"This is a moonstone necklace," she explains. "It is said that the greatest lords of the moon elves wore such artifacts and wielded through them divine power."

"Would the moon elf who took the princess know of such a thing?"

"I would suspect so. This is perhaps one of the most valuable items I possess, and the one I guard most jealously, for its secrets are unknown to all. The methods of using and wielding such a stone have been lost, along with the knowledge of the moongates."

'Could they be linked, somehow?' you wonder. "Do you think its secrets could be found out yet?"

"I have been trying for a very long time. I have collected several tomes on the moon elves, if you are interested... But why this fascination with our ancient ancestors, if you do not mind my asking?"

"Just fascination," you reply. "I must confess, of late I have been delving more deeply into my roots, so to speak. I have also been interested in the ancient human empire, as I am a descendant of both."

"I understand your reasoning, but I lack art and artifacts of human origin more than five centuries old. I focus more on elven art."

"Naturally. It is the more aesthetically pleasing. If you do not mind my saying, this is the finest collection I have ever beheld. I find it a humbling experience."

She smiles, clearly proud of your compliment for her collection and heritage. "I see no reason, at the moment, to deny you the right to stay with us this evening. You may roam my halls freely, but understand that you will be accompanied by one of my servants; they will attend to your needs."

"Even in our quarters?" you joke, and she lets out a soft chuckle.

"You will be afforded as much privacy as you desire. I mean no insult, it is a precaution I take even with friends. One can never be too safe with such valuable art."

"I thank you for extending your hospitality, Lady Silverwind. Even though we are not yet friends, I hope we shall be one day."

She raises her hand, and you take the opportunity to notice that she is not wearing the diamond ring that the heist is centered on. 'She must keep it elsewhere, safe and sound and away from prying eyes...' You take her hand and kiss it.

"If you will excuse me, I must retire and speak with my husband." She leaves you after escorting you out of the inner sanctum, leaving two servants behind to accompany and attend to you. They are high elves, though slightly younger, wearing black suits with white gloves. They stand nearby, waiting for your next move.

You elect to tour the mansion, to appear as though you are taking in the art, but in reality to completely case it and learn its floorplan. Elven mansions rarely have dead-ends or hallways that don't loop back on themselves; everything flows out from a central point. Individual rooms do not connect to each other, but the halls do. After touring the first and second floors, you have a basic idea of the floorplan.

The ball itself will take place in the primary hall, with a few other large rooms serving as places of relaxation and good places for conversation. Guests are expected to arrive around sunset, perhaps a bit earlier, but the festivities themselves will not commence until the moon can be seen.

You know Supremia and an unidentified accomplace plan to infiltrate the party. They will adopt disguises of Lord and Lady Silverwind, and each will distract the other actual target. The ring will be stolen from the hand of Lady Silverwind, and some manner of signal will be given, which you know will not have its intended effect: the werewolves will have been dealt with.

So now begs the question: how will you foil their plot?

>You will wait until the ring has been removed and expose them when the signal fails
>You will impersonate Lady Silverwind and fool her impersonator
>You will conjure a fake duplicate of the actual ring and swap it out for the real one

Duplicates and forgeries can fail against master thieves, and tipping our hand too early will mean their plan was exposed way beforehand, and they wouldn't call the werewolves. By letting their signal fail, they'll realize they're fucked, and our exposing them means they'll be doubly fucked.

'I'll wait until they take the ring, then expose them when their signal fails,' you decide. 'When the time comes to unmask them, they'll have no way of escaping as intended. They'll be captured, and then Supremia, my 'master thief'... you'll belong to me.'

As you inspect some more of the art, Faye whispers to you, "What do you think of those servants? I like the taller one. He's cute."

"Not what we came for," you remind her.

"I know, but she DID say 'as much privacy as you desire...' And she didn't deny them accompanying and attending to our every need in the bedroom."

You look her in the eyes and whisper, "Do as you will, so long as you do not compromise what we came here for." Though, you do have to admit, these servants certainly aren't hard on the eyes...

With that, you decide to retire to your quarters. Yours and Faye's are adjacent to each other, and the servants remain respectfully outside. You take a moment to go over your belongings and refresh your appearance, ensuring that your disguise will not be found out.

Later that evening, you decide to leave your quarters in search of Lady Silverwind. You discover her on a balcony overlooking a fountain as the moon shines brightly overhead.

"It is lovely, is it not?" she asks you, noting your approach but not looking. "The moon, I mean. In a way, it is the one work of art we elves have lost and cannot reclaim."

"It shines so fully tonight," you say, and in the back of your mind you note that lycanthropes would be more powerful on a night such as this, as well as tomorrow. Supremia planned her partners well, to coincide with the fact that Lady Silverwind intentionally hosted the party on the night of a full moon.

"All elves are linked to the moon by our ancestors, but in ten thousand years no one has ever returned to it. Save for now, that is."

"You think she is on the moon?" you ask, knowing full well that she is.

"I know it. She is a moon elf, after all." There is a strange tone to her voice now, a kind of forlornness that she did not have before. Her noble face is difficult to read, but something is clearly weighing heavily upon her.

“Are you well, my lady?”

“You see well, even things that others may wish to hide,” she says with a smile. “I do hope you will not be offended if I do not discuss matters of a personal nature with a stranger… even one as personable as yourself.”

“I will respect your desires, my lady. But it is a shame to see so beautiful a work of art stained with tears.”

Silverwind hadn’t even noticed that one had formed along her left eye. She turns to compose herself, using a small white cloth to wipe away the offending tear. “I apologize. It is not my intention to present myself as anything short of perfect.”

“That isn’t difficult for one such as you. I think you don’t have this problem often.”

“I do not. Thank you for your understanding and kind words.”

“It is my pleasure, my lady.”

"Walk with me?" she offers, and you nod. You accompany her down the stairs and into the fountain area, where you discuss several things of not much consequence. Seeking only to keep her busy with talk and her mind far from whatever burdens it, you indulge her in listening to some of her more personal history.

"These fountains and this home have been in the care of my family for generations. I was entrusted with the art my family had collected over the centuries because, above all others in my family, understood its importance and value. I keep no piece of art unless there is meaning behind it, something that speaks to me."

"You recognize the value of each piece, but I think they are more valuable to you in a sentimental fashion," you say.

"This is true. I've never parted with a work unless the act of parting itself was more meaningful than the piece could offer me; such as giving a painting to a true friend. In all other aspects I act as the guardian of my collection, and though I do wish to share it with others -- such as allowing them to come to the ball tomorrow evening -- I cannot deny that I hoard them like a dragon hoards coin, selfishly."

"It isn't selfish if you place such meaning upon your hoard. You are far from as beastly a being as a dragon."

She smiles. "But I am selfish, you see. I listen to my heart and its desires at the expense of others, and if I am denied I can be terribly cruel and vile to the one who cannot give me what I want."

Her expression changes slightly as she thinks of someone -- her husband, perhaps? She stops herself and takes a soft, steadying breath. "I am not acting as I should," she admits. "Perhaps I merely desired an ear to talk off."

"I don't mind it. You may continue, if that is what you desire."

"I thank you, Lady Beaumont. But truly I should retire..."

As she moves, you gently take hold of her hand. "My lady. If your husband is mistreating you in some manner..."

"No, not at all," she insists. "I suppose I have been not been as unforthcoming as I intended. But as I said before, pleasant though our conversation has been, I mustn't speak of personal matters. This is a matter I must see to on my own."

"Are you worried that I will judge you?"

"You mustn't make so many assumptions. It is something I would prefer remain private; I cannot have others speaking of it."

"My lady, that only invites more curiosity. You cannot expect that I will simply forget our exchange has occurred."

She closes her eyes and, in a moment of weakness, reveals, "I desire children. I wish to create children more beautiful than all the art in the world... He cannot accommodate that desire."

"Does he not desire them as well?"

"It is not so simple. He is unable to provide. His... seed cannot take root."

'Infertility,' you realize with an understanding nod. "Have you looked into possible cures? Magic, perhaps?"

"It is not the manner of thing I should be discovered looking into," she says. "Lest it invite rumor and talk. I should not have even told you..."

"My lady, your secret is safe with me. I will not tell a soul."

She takes a deep breath. "I suppose I must place my faith in your word. Even if you do tell others, I could discredit you as a stranger..."

"There will be no need for that," you say, waving away her idle threat. "I seek not the approval of others. Yours is more important to me."

She seems to relax slightly and calm down. "I thank you... Perhaps, after all, we shall be friends."

"I would like that very much."

You accompany her inside and retire to your quarters. Surprisingly enough, Faye has restrained herself from playing with the servants, as hers is still posted outside.

You settle in for the evening. As you tuck yourself into bed, you suddenly feel a strange sensation, like claws raking down your arm. You look and see there is no wound, but rather the source was in your mind.

'Ben,' you realize. He carries your brand, and thus you can sense his current state of being. 'A werewolf has injured him...'

A moment later, you feel another pain, though it is not painful. Ben has been slashed again, but he is still alright; both attacks were enough to draw blood but not enough to stop him or keep him down. In this way you know that he, Amber and Bargum have found the werewolves, at the very least... So the plan is proceeding as expected.

While remaining in bed, you focus on divination and cast a spell to scry upon Ben. In your mind, a hazy image becomes more clear, and sound follows it as you behold a scene of three warriors standing against a pack of werewolves.

Ben, Amber and Bargum all have glowing halos surrounding them of white light -- doubtless one of the dwarf's protective runes. They keep their backs to each other as they are surrounded by snarling monstrous wolf-men, drooling at the mouths as they snap and howl.

You watch as Ben grits his teeth and keeps his shield in front of him; his silver blade is already stained with the blood of at least one kill. Behind him, Amber does the same, using her shield to bash one of them in the face when he cuts in too close. Bargum brings up his hammer and smashes it on the ground in front of him, creating a runic shockwave that spreads out in all directions and knocks back several of them.

While they keep up their defense, they stay mobile, moving as one unit to ensure they don't get split up. "I don't see the pack leader," Ben says.

"He'll show up!" Amber assures him, before stabbing one of the beasts as he leaps in front of her. Ben shouts and swings his sword, cutting off the hand of one of the beasts; upon falling, it shrivels up, loses its claws and turns into the hand of a human.

Watching from the safety of being miles away from the battle, you behold as your three underlings face off against the werewolves. At first, things go well, though Ben suffers a scratch across his chin, drawing a bright line of blood. The group seems to be capably repelling the werewolves and slaying them one after another, until the pack leader appears, just as Amber said.

The largest and most intimidating of the werewolves lands not in front of them, but in the middle of them. Before Bargum can shout, "Watch yer ass, lass!" the wolf lord swipes a paw at her backside and knocks her down. Bargum howls and charges in, but the wolf brings its foot up and stomps onto his chest, taking him down to the ground.

"Hey!" Ben cries, getting the wolf's attention. The beast growls and steps off the dwarf, approaching Ben, towering several feet high. Though he is clearly outmatched, Ben holds his ground.

The werewolf brings up a claw and Ben blocks it with his shield, but the sheer force of the blow knocks him down. As he tries to get up, the werewolf kicks him, stomping onto his chest. He brings his face close to the human, snarling and staring into his eyes. Before Ben can swing his sword or angle it for a stab, the werewolf grabs him by the neck and lifts him up with one arm, while preparing the other to impale him!

'No!' you think. 'Ben cannot die!' You quickly cast a spell of long-distance telepathy and speak with him. 'Ben! This is Sirena, your love! You mustn't give up, mustn't give in! Fight, Ben, fight with all of your might!'

Ben opens his eyes and meets the werewolf's gaze.

The werewolf lord's claw surges forward, burying itself in Ben's gut. You can feel, through the link of the brand, the absolute pain this results in. Ben shouts and drops his shield, using his now-free hand to hold onto his sword with both. He aims it downwards and thrusts with every last ounce of his strength left, impaling the werewolf through the head and brain.

The beast stands for a moment before letting go of your lover, who falls to the ground as the werewolf flops backwards. Ben gasps and puts his hands on the hole in his armor, trying to stem the blood flowing out.

"BEN!" Amber cries, running to his side. "Oh gods, it'll be okay, I promise it'll be okay," she says in a tone that sounds like things are very much not okay. She breaks out her pack and takes out some wrappings and begins to clean his wound. "Just stay with me, Ben, please..."

"Laddie! Lass! I'm comin'!" Bargum shouts. The stout dwarf quickly makes his way over and looks at the wound. "Aye, that's a bad one... Let's get ye plugged up!" The runepriest begins muttering a prayer and a spell as Amber continues her work. Ben simply lies there, breathing hard, trying to hold on.

You reach out to his mind. 'Ben. You will be alright.'

"Did... I do it?" he asks, and Amber replies but he is actually looking for your voice.

'You did. I'm proud of you. Now come home to me...'

With a combination of Bargum's healing runes and Amber's battlefield dressing, soon enough Ben is stable. He will need rest and time, but he is alive. Amber sits with his head in her lap, running her hands through his hair. Slowly, his eyes open.

"Thought I lost you," she whispers. "You big, stupid, thick-headed lummox..."

In his awakening state of confusion, he makes a mistake. "M... Mary...?" he says aloud, and that gives Amber pause.

"What did you just say?" she asks, then her face twists. "You're thinking of HER?"

"Oh lords," Bargum mutters, backing away and going to patrol the area. He knows a monster more fearsome than a werewolf is about to rear its head.

"W-wait, Amber, I--"

"Oh just shut up," she cuts him off, standing up and walking away from him. "I should've known..."

You find yourself rolling your eyes. 'Oh, for fuck's sake, Ben. Just tell her you meant 'Merriam.' She's your sister, after all, so you were thinking you would never see her again.'

Ben blinks a few times. "Amber, wait! I thought you were Merriam!"

She hesitates. "What?"

"Your red hair... I mean, she's my sister. I thought I was never going to see my family..."

Her body language changes, but slowly, until she is relaxed. "Then... You weren't thinking about her?"

"My sister," he insists. "You probably don't know this, but we called her Merry long before we met, well, Mary."

She manages to let out a nervous chuckle. "Oh, ha, oh Ben, I feel... I feel like a jealous fool."

"I'm just glad to be able to see you," he says. "I thought I was a goner there..."

Amber returns to his side and kneels down alongside him. She rubs some blood off of his cheek and stares into his eyes. "Oh, Ben... I lo..." She loses her bluster halfway through her sentence and her voice fades as she blushes deeply.

He squints. "What?"

She shakes her head. "Ah, what I meant is, I'll look after you until you're healed. But I'm not carrying you, you oaf!"

You open your eyes and end the scrying spell, satisfied that the cohesion between your minions has been maintained for now. But you're no fool, like Ben -- you know exactly what Amber truly meant. She's grown fonder of Ben than you imagined. This could be exploited in the future... But for now, you rest.

You come up with a plan and have Faye distract the servants while you sublty work your magic.

There are several potential avenues of escape if one were in a hurry, so you must cover your bases. The front entrance, the largest set of windows, and the two primary exits leading to the gardens on either side of the estate will work best; you'll just have to gamble and hope that it works. Using shadow magic, you infuse your normal tentacle spell with dark energy, causing them to be more permanent in nature. In each case, as you work your way around the house, you cause the tentacles to retract until they are perfectly hidden.

Having covered your bases, you wait until the evening, enjoying a nice breakfast, lunch and light dinner with Lady Silverwind; a more suitable meal will be served later on, as more guests arrive. You notice that her husband does not emerge from his study to entertain his guests; when asked, Lady Silverwind politely explains that he is busy with something and will make an official appearance later this evening. You do not press her further on the issue.

It is around just after dinner that the first guests begin to arrive. High elves, mostly, but there are some humans, half-elves and winter elves that can be seen. All of them are noble, and some bring family members, personal bodyguards or guests of their own; many elaborate dresses and masks can be seen. You, having donned your own raven motif, soon find yourself mingling with others alongside Faye. She, too, has matched your raven theme, though one that is not as pronounced.

By the time the sun has fully set, most of the guests have arrived. They roam the halls, socializing, taking in the art and enjoying the atmosphere of the estate. Though you are enjoying being surrounded by nobility once more, you do not forget that you are here to stop a thief.

'She and her accomplice could be anywhere,' you think. 'If they are disguised as guests at all right now. They could be invisible...'

There is a chance that magical detection will fail, as Supremia is not gifted in it and may be using other means right now, and so you elect to remain near Lady Silverwind. As the hostess of the party, she is naturally very popular, and many are gathered around her. You resign yourself to orbitting around the area for now.

It is about an hour later when Lord Silverwind makes his first appearance. You see him from a distance; he looks rather fair, with light skin and pale eyes. Tall, handsome and kind-looking; you can see why Lady Silverwind desired children with him, and the unfortunate circumstance of his infertility. The lord approaches his lady and kisses her before presenting her with a ring.

Now you're paying very close attention. The ring he slips onto her finger for the evening is nothing short of fantastic, a diamond beauty in a golden band that glitters like starlight. A hush falls over the many gathered as they behold this amazing ring.

'That's the real Lord Silverwind,' you surmise. You whisper into Faye's ear for her to follow him, and she breaks away from your side. 'Now that the ring is out in the open, it will only be a matter of time before the thief makes her move. She's here already, I can sense it... Now, I just have to wait.'

Your eyes scan about the crowd, but detect nothing. She is a master thief, after all, so if you were able to pick her out she wouldn't deserve the title.

Not wanting to risk exposing yourself to the potential thief by acting too close to Lady Silverwind, you play the part of a party guest. You mingle, you dance, you drink lightly and enjoy snacks. You're almost upset by the fact that there is no gossip of Sirena Le Doux, only of the recent kidnapping of the princess by the moon elf. But that is just pride; you should be glad that fewer eyes are turned towards the topic of Sirena Le Doux.

As the party advances and the moon grows higher, many join Lady Silverwind outside in the gardens after the conclusion of dinner. Something tells you that this is when the thieves will make their move. Keeping a distance but your eyes keen and open, you patiently await the next part of your plan to happen.

Then, you see it. Lord Silverwind enters the area, but Faye is nowhere to be seen. You realize that this must be the body-double, disguised by some magic, here to take the ring. You watch him as he advances towards the lady and whispers something in her ear. She is surprised, but after a moment, removes the ring and hands it to him.

'Got you.'

At that moment, a brilliant display lights up the sky as fireworks are launched and explode. Lady Silverwind seems most surprised of all; this wasn't something she had planned. The festive rockets light up the night sky in many colors, drawing all eyes -- except yours. Yours are locked firmly upon the man who just pocketed the ring and is slipping away.

'Surprise fireworks... a signal to the werewolves. Of course. Little do they know that there won't BE any werewolves...'

As you follow the man into the estate, you subtly turn invisible. He seems to be making a fairly narrow path towards the primary hall of the residence, likely the place he will rendezvous with Supremia. You watch as he, in the blink of an eye, switches from one disguise to the next.

'That was not magic... he is a shapeshifter, naturally! She is allied with a changeling...'

While contemplating this new information, you hear a scream. Despite your best judgment, you turn your head to witness a dark elf running into the room, carrying a bloody dagger! She is dressed lightly, and that's putting it mildly -- her outfit would give your vixen getup a run for its money.

'Faye,' you realize. 'She must've tried to capture Supremia, or something must've gone wrong. Either way, she's here now!'

You barely catch the changeling adopting a different disguise and making for a window you haven't placed the tentacles over. Supremia, however, makes a dash towards the larger windows!

'I don't think so!'

Dropping your invisibility, you raise both hands, each in an opposite direction. With one, you call forth the tentacles you placed earlier, which reach out and pluck Supremia out of the air! The dark elf lets out a cry of surprise as she is caught, the thick tendrils wrapping around her limbs and chest. Her bloody knife falls from her hand, sticking into the wood below as guests look on, astonished.

But that was only half of it, and the easier half. Now you cast arcane lock upon the window, causing it to become sealed shut. The changeling attempts to open it, but it is far beyond his power to do so.

And so he runs, in an opposite direction, fleeing towards a side exit -- right into a place where you set more tentacles. You smile beneath your mask as you command them to emerge, and before he can turn away it is too late. He is caught, ensnared by your trap. In one fell swoop, both thieves are subdued.

As the distracted party-goers return inside, led by Lady Silverwind, you respectfully present the captives and the stolen ring. You explain that it was nothing more than quick reflexes that allowed you to capture the thieves, and personal guards quickly detain them.

A trail of blood is followed to the personal quarters of the Silverwinds, where the lord is discovered dead, a knife through his heart. Lady Silverwind quickly breaks down and people begin to leave, save for a few close friends. You are asked to stay for the time being, but are not being held captive; the lady wishes to speak to you when her grief is lessened.

You find Faye and ask her what happened. She explains it as thus; Supremia appeared in the guise of his wife, leading them to their inner quarters. When she heard a strange noise, Faye opened the door, only to find her stabbing Lord Silverwind. Her disguise foiled, she rushed past Faye and into your trap.

It isn't exactly how you desired the situation to go, but the end result was still the same. You were able to stop the thieves and keep the ring, and did so in a way that convinced the others you had no foreknowledge of the events. Supremia and her changeling partner are taken away; you learn that they will be transported to the high elven capital for eventual trial.

Breaking Supremia out will be difficult, but that part of the plan will come later. Her trial will not come soon, giving you plenty of time to plan.

For now, you will remain at the Silverwind Estate, and befriend the newly-widowed Lady Silverwind. You could use an ally in high elven society...
>>
Oof. Well, lemonade out of lemons. There goes the 'make him fertile and she'll be imdebted to us' plan, though.
>>
Having foiled the heist with expert planning and good rolls, I think it's about time we get a milestone.

You know the drill: pick a category!

Abjuration
Conjuration
Divination
Enchantment
Thralldom
Evocation
Illusion
Holy
Necromancy
Transmutation
Restoration
Elementalism
Shamanism
Druidry
Alchemy

Our Shadow Points have increased to 5.

I say we take the lords corpse with us to Aran and bring him back in return we ask for the lady's loyalty. Unsure what spells to take though.
>>
>>1728877
>Elementalism
Let's get a wind spell or something to go with our wind boosting form
>>
>>1728893

Entirely possible.
>>
>>1728918
Im fine with that.
>>
>>1728875
Maybe we can try the Morgan Le Fay/Mordred route
>>
>>1728877
I'd say shamanism because we don't have any and talking to spirits or something might be useful if we want to find out more about the dead empires.
>>
>>1728877
Enchantment
>>
>>1728938
so Fate Merlin right, slap a dick on a female to create mordred. Gotcha
>>
>>1728953
We just have to make the child bare resemblance to her and she can tell everyone it was something they we planning on announcing
>>
>>1728953
Or get her to fuck Kay and have her pass the child off as her husbands?
>>
I'll return tomorrow. Have to turn in early.

Also, I'll be gone for the entirety of August, sorry to say. But don't worry, I'll be back.
>>
>>1728976
This is also true but we'll have to give the lady proper grieving time before introducing Kay.
>>
>>1728997
Nah. It will have to be quick so the pregnancy doesnt become suspicious.
>>
>>1728877
>Necromancy

We've invested into it quite a bit, but haven't made good enough use of it lately.

It works fantastically as a counter to other necromancers as well.
>>
>>1728953
I bet Francis would help out with this.

Remember, he knows a spell that results in any female of any type getting pregnant from him.

If we act quick, we can even harvest her dead husbands seed and get Francis in on the deal by letting him, er, "deliver" it as it were.
>>
>>1728877
> Necromancy
>>
>>1728938
Do you think revealing our direct line MOON ELF heritage would be good incentive for that?

Eh. Probably not unless we mention that we had actually had contact with our ancestor and that she had offered to recruit us blah blah blah

Right now that's two votes each for Elementalism and Necromancy.

Anyone care to break the tie?

Elementalism
Necromancy is still our deepest school, so it can't hurt to branch out.

Not dying is high on my list of priorities.

Branching out is stupid. I mean I'm all for learning elemental spells, but for Milestones?

If we wanted to be kinda okay at a bunch of different crap but not really good at anything and get wrecked when running into someone who did specialize, then this would be "Evil Bard" quest.

I'd say that's fairly definitive. It will be updated in the pastebins.

As always, thank you for playing everyone, I hope you had fun and are enjoying the story. I know I am.

I'll see you in a month's time, so stay tuned!

Oh yeah, Ben's a werewolf now.

Hahaha! You guys think his sister likes dog sex?
