You are Kusajishi Riku, a shinigami and sitting Captain of the Ninth Court Guard Division. At the moment you find yourself deeply embroiled in a conflict surrounding the Kasumiōji family, a noble house of the second rank whose power and influence within the Soul Society's political world are very nearly comparable to those of the noble Shiba, Shihōin, and Kuchiki.

After a show of violent force that very nearly reached the level of what you'd consider gratuitous, you've managed to subdue the secret force of assassins maintained by the Kasumiōji retainer Kumoi. Now begins the process of gathering evidence to bring to the Central 46 to prove conclusively that Kumoi's mad ambition drove him to produce bakkotō, a dangerous and highly illegal type of spiritual sword once considered a rival design to the modern incarnation of the zanpakuto which all shinigami rely on. These assassins have surrendered their blades in exchange for mercy... which was timely for them, as you weren't totally certain how long it would have been before their own now-abandoned weapons started to devour them.

“So, you think Captain Shihōin's going to capture him?” one of the assassins asks aloud, only to be silenced by your intensely disapproving glare.

“You're going to sit there and think about what you just said until she gets back,” you tell the man angrily. “And then you're going to apologize to her for saying it.”

“Yes, ma'am...”

“So who are you people anyway?” you ask, finally breaking your glare and allowing the poor assassin to breath again.

The first assassin who surrendered, the one who seems the most frustrated by their employer's flight, rolls his eyes. “Some of us were from the Nukui family. We served the Kasumiōji... that is, until Hanza decided Lady Rurichiyo was too weak to lead and pledged his loyalty to Kumoi.”

“And who is this Hanza fellow?” you ask pointedly. “Where can I find him?”

The assassin jerks his head in the direction of one of the corpses. “Dead. You and your zanpakuto turned him into assassin okonomiyaki.”

“Ah, so that's who that was,” you nod thoughtfully. “So who's in charge now?”

“That would be me,” he replies. “Nukui Mako.”

“Well then, Mako,” you muse. “Your first order of business when this is all finished will be to apologize to Lady Rurichiyo.”

“No seppuku,” you add, knowing full well what he was about to say. His jaw snaps shut abruptly.

“I suppose it would be too easy a way out,” he agrees. “Very well, we will see what Lady Rurichiyo orders when we confess.”

“Do you regret what you did?”

“Yes and no,” Nukui Mako admits frankly. “Hanza was not mistaken in his assessment of the young Lady, she doesn't have the personality to lead... perhaps the qualification should be 'yet'. But Kumoi was clearly the wrong person to lead us as well, and betraying our rightful leader tarnished our honor as retainers to the Kasumiōji.”

“At least, that's what I believe.”

>You're wrong. You should have given Rurichiyo a chance to grow into the position.

I have way too many thoughts regarding this, and it's all just too scattered.

Maybe start with said retainers asking Rurichiyo herself if she's actually willing to take the task of being head of the clan first? If she's fully onboard and willing to be dedicated, then it's just a matter of a guiding hand being there.

“She's a kid,” you tell the seniormost surviving Nukui. “Her parents died and she was thrust into a situation she hadn't been prepared for. You wouldn't be able to do it either.”

“So you expect us to simply suffer through poor leadership until the girl matures?” he demands.

“Yes,” you affirm. “I do. Kumoi's mistake was that he was determined to solve the problem by undermining Lady Kasumiōji. What you all should have done was find a way to prepare your mistress for the task. To support her instead of betraying her.”

“I... see,” the man nods quietly. Then he seems to glance upwards. “Do you smell something burning?”

Actually... you do smell something burning .That can't possibly be good.

You head up the stairs and are immediately confronted with an inferno. Someone must have set fire to the building in several different places at the same time, allowing the blaze to spread out of control through the wooden frames of the Kasumiōji compound, and you're pretty sure you know precisely who it is.

“Kumoi...” you spit.

This is bad. The fire's already spread everywhere, far beyond your ability to stop it... perhaps.

It may be possible to put the fire out using kidō, but the force of the spell may end up killing quite a few of the retainers upstairs. Speaking of which, your speed may allow you to remove everyone upstairs safely... or the assassins downstairs and a substantial amount of evidence.

I'm also trying to recall if a tunnel version of Danku was in our repertoire (I think it was when we tried to catch some Blanks?).

Riku could try to secure a fire corridor for the evacuees via that modified spell, since putting out such a large fire is gonna be tougher. Might as well just secure a safe zone for an exit.

Reaching out with Tenteikura you contact the assassins.

“I need you to come upstairs and evacuate any of the innocent retainers upstairs before the manor burns down,” you order them. “I know it's a risk to all your lives, and you can run if you like, but after all of this I hope you've learned something. I hope you'll try your best to do better, to be better, to be the sort of men your honor demands you should be.”

“I'll keep the upper floors cleared as much as I can.”

With that, you begin the grueling process. Smoke fills the corridors all throughout the manor, until you use Tenran to blast holes in the exterior walls to allow it to filter out. Timbers collapse in flames until you secure them with shimmering barriers of light and pin them together with beams of summoned steel. But it's not enough, there are too many places where your focus has to be divided.

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki!” you roar, calling upon your zanpakuto to help you in the colossal task of maintaining so many bakudō at the same time even as you sling ice down flaming hallways to allow safe avenues of escape... but only so long as the ice holds. And of course with any more raw power the compromised sections of the building could begin to collapse under the strain, defeating the point of this entire exercise.

And so you continue like this for what seems hours, seeing one or two innocent bystanders at a time to safety. Some of them are burned, all are covered in smoke and soot... but to your relief some are also led by the assassins-turned-first-responder.

Finally, in a groan of timber, the sprawling structure decides it's endured enough. The ceiling falls in, raining down in places where you haven't reinforced the structure and falling through floors thinned and cracked by heat. Walls begin to slide away from each other and heavy wooden beams splinter under stresses for which they were never designed.

Cinders and embers dance in the night sky like so many fireflies.

You watch that skyward procession from the green lawns of the manor grounds, with Yoruichi seated at your side. Having heard back from Rangiku that the situation at your own Division has been concluded with only a few casualties to report, none of whom had faces you could pick out of a crowd, you're left to figure out what this leaves you.

“He went straight for a failsafe,” Yoruichi explains with a tired sigh. “None of our reports mentioned it, but he had gunpowder and kerosene set up in the crawlspaces and in some of the closets. When he realized he'd lost the fight he ran for the fusebox and set it off.”

“Took the whole place with him,” you muse. “He couldn't have it all, so he burned it all down to make sure nobody else could have it either.”

“Surely it can't be surprising?” Yoruichi quips, sparing you a sidelong glance. “When such crass ambition first meets success beyond reason then meets failure, of course it would lash out. I've seen it plenty of times. Just never so...”

“Toasty?” you offer.

“Dramatic,” Yoruichi replies. “Your Division weather the storm well enough?”

“Fifty assassins, fifty bodybags,” you report. “As expected, none of them are Commandos, Lieutenants, or bratty nobles.”

“I just hope the damage wasn't too bad,” Yoruichi muses.

“Rangiku was careful not to mention it,” you realize aloud. “I... might need to spend the night at your place.”

“I'm sure that can be arranged.”

A few minutes later, you see a face: familiar despite the sweat and the grime.

“Well, now there's a surprise,” you muse. “Nukui Mako, part of me still assumed you'd flee the scene the second the evacuation was complete.”

“I gave it some thought,” he admits. “Final count is eight Kasumiōji retainers missing and presumed dead, fifteen seriously hurt, twenty-three with only smoke inhalation and minor burns.”

“It would have been worse without your help, Captains.”

“And yours,” you remind him. “How many?”

“Six,” Nukui informs you sadly. “That's all we have left. The others... well, they died for the right reason at least.”

>If you and your clan want to leave now, I'll tell Rurichiyo what happened.

The return trip to your Division is a somber one.

You take Nukui Mako in tow, still covered in soot except where the sweat has washed it away in long lines, who silently and obediently follows with full awareness of what he is expected to do at the end. It takes until nearly dawn to make the trip, Nukui's tired feet carrying him much quicker than Rurichiyo could ever hope to manage but far slower than either yourself or the famed “Shunshin”.

Finally, you get to see the extent of the damage.

There's some ground that's been ripped up here and there, trees have been uprooted and tossed around like toothpicks. Some of them very old, very beautiful trees, which have stood for a hundred years since you personally planted them where they were. They're dead now, dead and gone.

You suppose all things end some day, even here.

The bodies have long since been burned along with their swords.

Finally you see the damage to your own home. One roof has been blown away... yours of course. Several sections of the walls are gone as well, and the stones around the moat are cracked in places. But all told, it seems the defensive lines held.

Rangiku is standing outside the door, looking at you rather sheepishly.

“So there were a few... issues,” she admits.

“You can tell me about them later,” you wave her off. “Where is Rurichiyo?”

“She's just woken up,” your daughter tells you. “Inside. Could hardly sleep after all that excitement anyway.”

You head inside to find a little bundle of linens that Rangiku pulled out for Rurichiyo to sleep on. The young noblewoman herself is sitting on the couch nearby, in the process of combing her hair when she sees you.

“Lady Riku, Lady Yoruichi,” she greets you with a tired smile. “We hope that all went well.”

“Not quite,” you admit to her. “We found the evidence we were after, and we know now it was Kumoi after all.”

“We... must admit even after all is said and done we are surprised,” she nods quietly. “Such a betrayal... we hardly thought it possible.”

“That's not all,” you admit. “Kumoi had certain failsafes in place in the event his scheme was discovered. He destroyed the manor, Rurichiyo. All of it.”
>1/2
>>
>>1722682
“All of it, you say?” Rurichiyo asks, her eyes widening slowly in recognition of what you're saying. “How many people were hurt?”

“All of them, to some degree,” Yoruichi tells her. “Eight of your retainers were killed. But the fatalities could have been much more numerous if it weren't for the Nukui.”

“The Nukui family?” Rurichiyo asks, her expression suddenly serious. “The Nukui? How do you know that name? We were told there were no living Nukui.”

“Was it Kumoi who told you that, Lady Rurichiyo?” the man you brought along with you asks carefully.

Rurichiyo nods quietly. “Yes... now that you mention it, we suppose nothing he ever said to us may be trusted. Are you one of the Nukui? What was your role in this affair?”

“I am the new Head,” Nukui Mako bows deeply. “And I am ashamed to say our family served Kumoi against you.”

“And yet you saved others?” Rurichiyo asks gravely. “At great risk?”

“None of us expected to survive,” he admits. “To us it was penance.”

“Then the remainder of your number will continue to serve the Kasumiōji clan, as you always should have,” Rurichiyo declares. “We would have you take us to the site of the manor. Our presence is demanded, and our leadership at this time expected.”

“We cannot be seen to be cowering. Kenryū, Enryū, we are leaving. Captains... thank you for your generous aid and your hospitality.”

“At least allow us to send a guard with you,” you offer. “You can still do your duty, but we also have to mind ours.”

Rurichiyo considers it for a moment. “We suppose we shouldn't turn up our nose out of a petty sense of pride, especially not when our dependents are on the line.”

“Agreed... thank you, Captains. Really, for everything.”

“Let us know how it goes, Lady Rurichiyo,” Yoruichi smiles, offering a slight bow... slight, but generous given their positions.

“So you think she'll be okay?” Rangiku asks when the Kasumiōji are finally gone.

You consider the question for a few moments before reaching a tentative verdict. “Yeah. I think she'll be okay.”

And as much as I hate to do this, the Bakkoto arc is concluded and this is as good a place as any to call it for the evening. Archive's up, thanks for stopping in (as short as it was).

Take your time. You did good finishing up the Bakoto arc. Quest Burn-out is something that should be taken seriously especially for someone like you who ran a Gundam Quest from start to finish, started another gundam quest which was a direct sequel to your first quest, and started SSQ. Take your time and recollect. No need to keep pushing the plot forward and juggle stuff between IRL and questing. We all know that feel. Point is, you deserve taking this break and it's a wise decision to do so. We won't hold it against you.

The attendants of Fourth Division's hospital have been having a tough time of it today. There's been the usual inflow and outflow of patients for relatively minor injuries and ailments, of the sort that a hospital in the living world might be expected to care for. Thumbs crunched under hammers, lost teeth, the odd dislocation or break here and there. Then there were the lacerations, deep sword wounds that are unavoidable when so many shinigami train against each other every day and safety rules aren't necessarily followed. Those who know shikai cannot train it with the shinai of course, but all shinigami must at least familiarize themselves with the feel of a live blade in hand.

The Eleventh Division takes that to an entirely unacceptable extreme.

In that division, the tendency is to swing your sword for any damn thing, regardless of how stupid or pointless the argument might be. That tends to lead to a lot of injuries, making a lot of work for the Fourth Division.

“Are they still causing a fuss in there?” one nurse asks her friend outside a room with three Eleventh Division members recovering inside. Her friend cocks an eyebrow as a loud crash echoes down the hallway.

“You tell me,” the young man in green scrubs sighs. “They've been impossible since they got here.”

“Under the influence?” the nurse asks.

The young man nods. “I'm not entirely sure how they're all still conscious other than pure spite towards each other... and maybe a bit just for us.”

“Lovely,” the nurse rolls her eyes as there's another, even louder crash from inside the room. “Someone's going to have to go in there and shut them up, the other patients on this floor have started to complain.”

“About what?”

The nurse looks up to see who the sweet-sounding voice belonged to, though her companion already knew and knew well enough to stand stock still instead of acknowledging it directly. If he acknowledged it, then he would have to be the one to explain to their Captain. And ever since she decided to change her hair...

The man gulped nervously.

“Well, Captain...” the nurse begins hesitantly.

If Captain Unohana is concerned about the situation at all, her warm smile masks any evidence of it in her expression. Then she too hears a loud crash, and her smile fades slightly.

“I see.”

“And that's why you're always gonna be a dumbass,” one of the Eleventh Division men declares drunkenly, having finished a long-winded and borderline nonsensical rant at his companion's expense.

“None of that made any sense,” the third man observes, having had somewhat less to drink. “Actually, speaking of not making any sense, why am I even here? I'm literally not involved.”

“You can't not take a side, coward,” the victim of the first man's rant counters. “That's why I smacked ya around in the first place, remember?”

“No, that was him!” the third man shouts, pointing at the first. “Man you really are a dumbass!”

“Watch your mouth, moron!”

Swords are suddenly drawn, and in an instant the door opens.

A trio of small knives catch the clothing of the third man, their momentum dragging him along and pinning him to a wall. His eyes go wide as he sees a blur of white charge into the room, as Unohana effortlessly disarms his two compatriots with swift strikes to the undersides of their wrists. Then, with a graceful turn of her body she catches their swords by the hilts and presses each lightly against its owner's neck.

The sudden outburst of violence from a normally quiet and restrained Captain would've paralyzed the trio from confusion even if they stood half a chance against her in the first place, and even more surprising was the fact that she's still smiling.

“Now, gentlemen,” she begins in an even, almost soothing tone, “if you're quite finished I'd like to remind you that you're in a hospital. Our mission is to see to it that each of our patients makes a full and speedy recovery, however part of that is ensuring that the environment is as suitable for recovery as possible. That means peaceful, quiet, and safe.”

“If any element runs contrary to those characteristics,” Unohana continues, her smile fading slightly as her gaze falls upon the swordsman who began the exchange, “then it is our duty to... remove it.”

“Do you understand what I'm saying to you?”

The three men each nod in turn as the Captain's gaze falls on them. Satisfied, Unohana sets aside the two zanpakuto she requisitioned and recovers her daggers from the wall, allowing the man she'd pinned there to fall to the floor gasping like a landed fish.

“I hope you all enjoy the rest of your stay,” she smiles, before narrowing her eyes. “And please do not forget what we just discussed.”

>>1728361
The two attendants are still staring when Captain Unohana shuts the door behind her with a satisfied chuckle.

“That should be sufficient to last, at least for the duration of their convalescence.”

“Are you certain, ma'am?” the nurse asks before realizing what she just did and covering her mouth.

Captain Unohana shakes her head. “It's fine. I may have changed somewhat from the... image I once presented. But my loyalties and my convictions ultimately have not, and so long as you remain respectful, please feel free to speak your mind.”

There are a few long moments of silence, as if Unohana is waiting for either of the two shinigami to speak up.

“Well, please return to your duties then,” she concludes quietly. “Oh, and I expect the two of you to be present tomorrow morning for exercises.

“Exercises, ma'am?” the man asks in confusion.

“Correct,” Unohana nods resolutely. “The zanjutsu skills within our Division are sorely lacking: if you lack the strength to protect yourself, how can you protect your patients?”

“The first class will be at six tomorrow morning,” she declares. “Please don't be late.”

The two shinigami exchange a nervous glance. “Yes, ma'am...”

oh my. I can see where this trend is going...
>The 9th has a reputation of being the most fearsome "Modern" division when deployed in small squads while being the newspaper club of Seireitei.
>The 4th is the scariest division for it boasts the most skilled zanjutsu practitioners overall in Seireitei while acting as Seireitei's Doctors and Nurses.
>11th Division hold the best BBQs if you can get past their Bloodthirsty Fight-happy culture

I wonder what the other divisions pride themselves in for their mundane logistics functions in Seireitei...
>2nd Division Have a hidden reputation of being Seireitei's deadliest assassins while working as the Mailmen and Delivery boys of Seireitei during the daytime.
>6th Division pride themselves on having the best well maintained and beautiful gardens.

Any ideas on that Queen? I kinda like to see more in-depth detail on the going-ons and daily mundane activity in Seireitei as a whole in the form of the question "If Seireitei acted like a nation, which division does the medical service? Which division handles the media/printing press? Who delivers the daily mail? Etc."
>>
I wonder what each captain does for the Seireitei connection thingy. Riku would know all about it being the one with the printing presses. I wonder if Zaraki can sit down long enough to give out BBQ tips.
>>
>>1729009
Now I’m imagining Squad 2 making it a point of pride to never let anyone see them delivering the mail.

For Unohana as she is now? It's kind of taking your life in your own hands.

Easy solution there. Wrap the package in plain paper, draw the character for "Retsu" on it. Stake out her office while in hiding, wait for her to leave the office but return shortly, then leave it resting gently against the door.

She still never senses you if you're good enough, so it's still impressive and discrete. But you're also not crossing any private boundaries to potentially draw her ire.

>Guest Lecturer: Yamada Hanataro
“W-welcome, everyone!” Hanataro practically squeaks as his junior Division members stream into the dimly-lit lecture hall buried deep within the Forth Division's grounds. “Please, settle down! Um... I can't speak over you all if you...”

Captain Unohana gently clears her throat from the first row and the entire hall falls deadly silent, even as the last few members of the audience stream in. “T-thank you, Captain...”

“Thank you all for coming!” Hanataro begins awkwardly. “Well... I understand you were required to be here... but, you know... thanks for being here anyway.”

A projector in the back of the hall whirs to life, spreading the Division emblem across the screen to Hanataro's back. He clears his throat as the slide changes to one reading “First Response Training: Special Topics”.

“First... I'm supposed to ask you some quick questions,” Hanataro announces, as a new slide comes up on the screen amid several audible gasps of shock. The young officer on the other hand seems completely unperturbed by the graphic image. “This is Captain Kusajishi after a recent battle. She has a star-shaped through-and-through wound to her thorax, fourth-degree burns on her left arm from the elbow down, and more broken bones than we could even count upon admission.”

“Which wounds would you focus on first?” he asks. “Each of you has a remote device at your seat, the question is... well, it's multiple-choice, so please vote now.”

A few seconds later the results are displayed, and Hanataro smiles, rubbing at the back of her head. “Well... see... it's actually 'D'. Captain Kusajishi has her own regenerative powers, so unless she's going to bleed out in the next few seconds it's actually a better idea to just transfer reiatsu to her and let her do her thing.”

The slide changes to another intimidating image: a tan-skinned arrancar staring quizzically at the camera. “This is Miss Halibel, an arrancar. If an arrancar is severely wounded, you respond the same way you would for a shinigami: true or false?”

Another few seconds pass, before Hanataro speaks up. “Again, a difficult answer. Mostly arrancar are just like us... but some do have some unusual traits, such as the position of their 'hollow hole' and mask fragments. So you have to treat each on a case by case basis, particularly if they are in their released state.”
>1/2
>>
>>1735913
> Unohana: One time, someone who had been slacking off in his stealth training tried it. Captain Sui Feng herself told me when he was coming; in exchange for letting her put a hidden camera in my office.
>I must say, the picture of his face right after I had slipped up behind him and asked if I could help him in any way was truly a sight.
>Mind, he did wind up spending a day or two here, but after being discharged, he’s been much more diligent in his training, so I dare say everything worked out wonderfully!
>>
>>1736193
“Now, last question I promise!” Hanataro smiles awkwardly, displaying three very similar injuries on the same body... each a penetrating wound of some kind, with very few distinguishing characteristics. “One of these three wounds requires advanced surgical intervention... just click which one you think that is.”

“They look the same!” a loud voice from the back of the hall complains.

Hanataro presses a button on his own clicker, revealing that a third of the audience or so picked each image: no better than if they'd all been guessing.

“It's the third one,” he declares, indicating the far left image. “This one's clearly the result of a cero, you can tell by the even burn marks going all around the entry and the small amount of blood. The middle image is a shallow wound caused by the end of a jitte. The third, with the blood and a small amount of irregular burning to the surrounding tissue, is an entry wound caused by a metal projectile lodged two inches below the left lung, near the spine. That would require surgery.”

The rest of the presentation is... gruesome. Treating full-body burns, cleaning and treating acid wounds, partial-dismemberment and the question of when it's appropriate to amputate... each topic seemingly more nausea-inducing than the next, all appropriately illustrated in images of either cadavers or incredibly convincing simulations.

Finally, the relieved Division members are allowed to file back out of the hall, some still ashen-faced by some of the things they'd witnessed.

More than one would have trouble shaking how calm their new Third-Seat was when talking about it all... meanwhile, Hanataro was simply relieved at what he considered a job well-done.

You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and one day has passed since the attack on your Division's headquarters by rogue assassins from the house of Kasumiōji. Already it feels that there's been a return to normality: the Lieutenants are training in the courtyard, the Division members are cleaning up the damage from the fight alongside their regular duties, the Commandos are tending to their respective responsibilities and projects. All with the unshakable feeling hanging over your heads, that of a slow-motion disaster unfolding around you.

In much the same sort of return to normal affairs, your office is an eye of perpetual calm.

Contact reports are filled out in triplicate and filed away with blinding speed and efficiency, Tenri has just slapped a fresh pot of coffee on, and the sounds of hammering and sawing yell you that there's been significant progress in replacing the roof that was destroyed during the fighting.

You wince, your anger briefly threatening to send you off shouting about the now-dead assassins, but you remain calm in spite of yourself. Not like shouting about it now would accomplish anything aside from making yourself hoarse.

No, instead you maintain the cool, professional attitude expected of a Captain as you propel yourself through the boring, everyday, painfully mundane duties of your chosen occupation as swiftly as possible so you can move on to other things.

“So, Captain,” Tenri asks you calmly. “What now?”

“Well, there are a lot of things that still need to happen,” you frown, going over it all in your mind. “The Lieutenants are making progress, I need to finish training in kidō, the vizards are still out there hanging in the wind, I have prisoners to deal with, and there are literal gods making moves that I can't even begin to predict.”

There it is again, that sense of tension.

>I think I should check on the Lieutenants, see how they've been progressing.
>It's time to finally finish my kidō training, after all these long decades.
>I want to check in on the prisoners, it's time for them to make some decisions.

“I've been a student of kidō for as long as I can remember,” you muse, a note of exhaustion creeping into your voice. “It's long past time for me to finish what I started.”

Tenri sets down the pot of coffee, apparently deep in thought. “Shall I inform Captain Shihōin?”

“Would it help?” you shrug. “If it kills me it kills me... but I'm tired of dancing around the issue. It's not like me. If something needs doing I've always gone ahead and done it.”

“Like I said... long past time.”

“Very well, ma'am,” Tenri bows. “Then at least allow me to wish you luck.”

“That's fine by me,” you nod in return. “I'll probably need it.”

You leave your office behind, walking slowly, almost strolling, out into the open training courtyard where the Lieutenants are busily sparring. It seems they really are coming along nicely, having picked up a few tricks from each other to reinforce their weakest points when it comes to combat. You only hope it's going to be enough to see them all through what's about to come, that their heads are in the right place to allow them to make the most of what they can do irrespective of any questions of pride or personality.

It's always felt like a big ask, but maybe this time the stakes are high enough.

Eventually you settle down, seating yourself on the gravel and focusing inward until you're greeted by a familiar panorama.

“I see you have decided to commit yourself wholly to this attempt,” Tenkotsuki muses quietly as you sit across from her beneath the ancient, weather-beaten tree standing high on a cliff... which strangely, you've never seen experiencing any sort of weather other than thick, offshore fog.

“That is good. Now we can begin.”

>Explain this last lesson to me... what am I missing? How should it feel?

We already know that every spell has been nothing but training for another spell down the line, and riku has always just felt things out, filling in the blanks on instinct. It's probably best if she just knows more or less what she's supposed to do, and then tries to do it.

helping with kido confirmed oh shit time to learn hollow magic

Also, are we sitting near the lieutenants? Please tell me we are, and that this is going to be like when ichigo was training in the dangai and every time he got cut in his inner world it'd physically appear on his body, so every time we cast a massive fuckoff spell the lieutenants feel it, and every time we get injured they can see it. That'd be some good shit.

“So I already know the basics,” you muse thoughtfully as Rosa finally deigns to join the two of you beneath the flowery tree, still avoiding eye contact like a pouting teenager. “And you said there are ways to cast spells without sacrifice... I guess the only way to make any progress would be to apply what I already know and see where I stand.”

Tenkotsuki motions for you to stand, and so you do. “Show me, then.”

You draw the blade at your side, gaze into the light that plays off the slightly hazy, almost starry steel of its side, and give it a test swing out towards the ocean. Then you focus your reiatsu into it, and repeat the process.

“That was like a weak getsuga tensho,” Tenkotsuki observes slyly. “I thought you said you were applying yourself?”

“Warm-up,” you wave her off, repeating the process with a little more oomph added with hakuda.

“And that was kamaitachi,” Rosa says, rolling her eyes and falling onto her back. “Try again.”

“You're really starting to piss me off!” you retort, slinging what looks like a half-baked, fire-based getsuga tensho out over the water next.

“The feeling's mutual,” Rosa fires back, staring at the iron-grey sky. “We're gonna be here all week, aren't we?”

“I didn't realize a zanpakuto could have a period,” you growl, firing off what looks like a wave of shimmering ice and snow. “But, here we are. I learned something new today after all.”

“Oh, you're in rare form today,” Rosa compliments.

“Thanks,” you reply calmly, compressed electricity arcing from the edge of your kodachi as you sling it yet again. “But I feel like I'm not really getting anywhere.”

To punctuate your admission the next swing, where you try to combine the crushing gravitational manipulation of spells like Kurohitsugi into a zanjutsu, comes out as another kamaitachi... like the comical puff of dust from a cartoon spigot that's out of water.

“Performance issues this early in the day?” Rosa asks, smirking as she sits up.

“I had a rough night's sleep,” you scowl.

>OMG had to burn an arm because he didn't completely understand the principles to use Itto kaso safely

>OMG could've slowly built up power and reiatsu to cast the spell with his ambient reiatsu as fuel, but had to burn the arm because his arm is jam packed full of raw reiatsu power already in the form of flesh and bone, and the spell would easily catch and activate faster if he burned the arm.

Good point, everyone considers spells like itto kaso to be sacrificial, but like tenkotsuki said, are they *really*?

Or is it just that almost nobody in history, not even genryuusai, never finished learning how to properly cast them. So few people that those who could successfully cast it and survive always lost a limb, and nobody was around who knew any better and could tell them they were just doing it wrong.

Why is that the case, though? Shinigami live for a damn long time, and genryuusai was an exceptionally well powerful and well trained shinigami, so what exactly keeps people from just throwing themselves against the problem until they eventually manage? Is there a special reason you can't just figure out how to cast it properly? Is there something to it that so well hidden you can't just figure it out through intense training? A secret key of sorts?

We're rolling so shitty today. Will there be an opportunity to try again? Or will this forever remain a mystery to Riku on why she keeps on firing ceros randomly?
>>
>>1745413
It'd be fine if someone else rolled. I have legendarily bad luck. I'm talking a nat 1 streak in the double digits. Basically people should be rolling before I do.
>>
>>1745357
“Rosa, what's happening to us?” you ask suddenly, lowering your sword to your side. “What happened when I used that cero?”

“Nothing's happening to us, Riku,” Rosa grins wickedly. “Something's happening to you. After all these years it's finally startin' to sink in!”

“What is 'it'?” you demand again.

“Instinct!” Rosa replies. “The pure, destructive instinct of a hollow! You've been so busy poppin' in an outta reality for decades, never wondering why you could do it without usin' a mask, or releasing my sword, haven't you?”

“I just assumed it was like any other technique,” you admit. “Like once you knew the trick to it you could repeat it.”

“It's nothin' like that!” Rosa insists testily. “You're usin' hollow abilities because you're finally beginning to understand the mindset of a hollow. All drawin' on my abilities gets you is stronger reiryoku, an it lets you tap into my instincts and technical skill.”

“That white cero though? Descorrer? That was all you, with your own reiatsu.”

Pure destructive instinct, ruled by no real technical knowledge... nearly the opposite to kido in every meaningful way, you suppose.

“And the way I could navigate the Dangai to and from the Royal Realm?”

“Acclimation to shinreiryoku,” Tenkotsuki explains. “Again, that would now be considered part of your own innate skillset by this point.”

“So where do I end anymore, and where do the two of you begin?”

“Wherever you please, my dear,” Tenkotsuki muses thoughtfully. “At least I suppose that is the nature of the situation. You do not wish to permanently merge with the two of us, am I correct? The thought of ego death, of losing “Kusajishi Riku” as she exists now to be replaced with a different individual, disturbs you?”

Rosa too seems to lean in, curious to hear your answer.

>I wish to avoid it if I can. I don't want to be someone else.

But that mindset in and of itself could be the result of that merge already starting.

It's a thought exercise with no real conclusion. Probably best not to dwell on it, because otherwise you begin to question if the decisions you make are actually 'yours'.

You sigh, a long, deep, pensive sound. “I guess the three of us will have to cross that bridge together some time, won't we? Nothing lasts forever.”

“Quite astute,” Tenkotsuki agrees quietly. “Surprisingly so, in fact. That day is a long while off I believe, but you are correct. At some point, likely in the distant future, the self-imposed divisions between us will... end.”

“However I also believe this will not become irreversible for... several thousand years, if we last that long.”

“By that point everything we know now will be gone anyway,” you realize aloud. “Even the oldest shinigami can't live that long... I think I can live with that outcome.”

“Then we have your answer,” Tenkotsuki nods solemnly. “But for now, we have work that needs to be done.”

“Right,” you nod, slowly settling back into a more focused state and repeating your exercise from before.

You two are already a part of me, but separate in your own ways. It's one's memories, choices and general experiences that make you who you are, and indeed if i fused with you i wouldn't be myself any more than you two would, though the person we become would still be a general reflection of who we all were. We aren't all that much different when we do it temporarily in bankai, because we're still basically the sum of our parts, at least mentally.

You're not sure how long you keep hard at it, but after some time you seem to get the hang of a gravity-based zanjutsu-kidō hybrid technique. It's not clear at all whether it would even be usable outside of this realm, but you eventually develop a knack for it.

Next you begin working on adding things: gravity and fire, gravity and ice, ice and lightning, each permutation you can think of. It's during this process that you feel something familiar.

“Yoruichi?” you muse, turning to stare up at the sky as you reach out with your senses.

“Your wife is giving you her reiatsu,” Tenkotsuki explains with a faint smile tugging at her lips. “You have been training here with us for nearly two days. She must have been concerned for your well-being.”

“I see...” you sigh, taking a moment to bask in the welcome feeling.

A thought occurs to you.

“Pure destructive instinct,” you think aloud. “Antithetical to kidō... at least on the face of it. But resolve... and Descorrer...”

“You're on to something?' Rosa asks, seeming to wake up from a catnap she's been taking while leaned up against a rock.

“Powerful, primal motivations,” you continue. “That's what's missing from all of the previous iterations. Some of them put you in a specific state of mind with their incantations, and they all build off each other, but what none of them teach is how to match raw emotion and instincts with that technical knowledge. The sense that you need something to succeed instead of simply knowing that it should succeed.”

“To make a kidō that functions more on primal, hollow-like tendencies,” Tenkotsuki nods thoughtfully. “Though perhaps you are misconceiving the requirements... this is not abandoning a specific frame of mind within which one must reason their way through the principles of kidō and reiatsu control, but adopting the most intense possible mental state: one of a single, pure emotion.”

“So which emotion?” Rosa asks. “I mean assuming you two are even REMOTELY right?”

SOMETHING KIND OF DANGEROUS WITH THIS VOTE:
>Write in
>>
>>1745674
Pride? This is the culmination of kido, where you go from learning it to being a master, so you should feel great about accomplishing it, right?
>>
>>1745674
>“So which emotion?”
Queen. Is this the actual question we're gonna have to base our write-in answers on?
>>
>>1745674
Fear? It's the only emotion I can think of that provides a true sense of primal need.

Maybe Dark Souls style - In order to possibly control the flame, you need to fear it.

I'm firing into the dark, mostly.
>>
>>1745694
Of course. You've been playing/reading the same character for 110 threads, what do you think Riku's response will be?
>>
>>1745674
Rage, pride, motivation... my thoughts turn to when we lost tenkotsuki's blade, what we did to that hollow and what we felt in that moment, and what we did to get her back.
Was it just pure rage? Was there also sadness and desperation?

What do i want?
I want to protect my family.
I have to kill to protect them. I have to hunt the prey, with all of my strength, with all of my focus, with all of my will.

Is the desire to kill an emotion? The desire to win? Can you really call determination an emotion?
I don't know for sure what makes emotions what they are, but i know that feeling, that desire. All too well.
>>
>>1745692
No wait, it's supposed to be primal. Is there even a primal version of pride?

>>1745707
Well if it's a personal response instead of a general one dictated by the guy that made kido, it'd be love. It's why Riku's done everything she's done and why she's fought so hard against Aizen.
>>
>>1745718
Love is something primal. It's the reason why even hollows form bonds and establish communities out in Hueco Mundo. Even if some of them don't know what love is, it's instinctual to all of them.
I'll agree with your idea.
>>1745674
Love is a passive yet very intense emotion. Riku's feelings for Tenkotuski, Rosa, Rangiku, Gin, Yoruichi, even Seireitei and her own 9th division. Even when undergoing hollowifcation, our first thoughts and instincts was "Find Yoruichi" because deep down our need for love was that great we threw caution to the wind and went to find her despite the risks knowing that she might have a possible solution to the problem.

If it's strong enough... you suppose any old emotion will do. Rage is an easy one of course, and probably one of the first most people would leap to. But then again most people also aren't capable of using this technique. So maybe the answer is something else...

Then you feel something else.

“Gin and Rangiku now?” you muse, sensing that your adopted children have both shared their reiatsu with you, probably on the same day on the outside.

Then you feel more familiar sensations. Apacci and Halibel and Starrk, Mirai, Kai, and Rukia, and even Bambietta each take turns sharing a little of their reiatsu with you as you sit in deep meditation for what must be day after day.

“Love?” you muse quietly. “Yes... that's it. A lover, siblings, children, friends... humanity itself, even. That's the strongest, most primal emotion I've got... love for the people I choose to surround myself with, and who choose to remain at my side.”

“All those people who stand to be killed if we fail.”

“Then go with that feeling, Lady Riku,” Tenkotsuki nods sternly. “You know the technical aspects, you know the feeling you must harness.”

“Now, do it! You must not fear, you must not doubt!”

“Hadō 99: Goryūtenmetsu!”

Your eyes fly open, the world heaves up all around you and powerful winds swirl in a massive storm of pale reiatsu... all of it yours. And amid that storm, which threatens to scour half the Seireitei down to the dirt it's built upon, you see them: the heads and bodies of five rampaging dragons forged of pure white reiatsu, their eyes set aglow from within and their voices carried on the wind like the tides booming against distant shores.

Shinigami brace themselves against the tempest, all except for one figure in white who laughs like a maniac.

With a massive amount of effort you aim the spell straight up into the sky, sending five dragons winding and snaking around each other as they climb ever higher into the sky. Then, they abruptly begin to coil around each other in an increasingly tight knot until the entire world goes white.

It's not painful.

Not nearly like having had your eardrums blown out, neither in terms of pain nor in the accompanying disorientation. Instead it feels comfortably warm, like slipping under a thick blanket on a cold night, or like an embrace from someone you've missed for a while. Then the white light fades, revealing your surroundings once more.

It's hard to tell how people feel about that display, most of them probably didn't even realize what was going on. To them this probably came out of nowhere, since you've been in jinzen for... well, for gods only know how long.

Also, most of them appear to be unconscious.

The only real exception is Yoruichi, who's still beaming.

“I see you've been busy” she observes with a quick peck to your cheek.

“I suppose,” you yawn, stretching your arms. Rangiku finally arrives as you do, and sees that all the commotion was just you.

“Jeez,” she sighs dramatically. “You really had me going there for a moment.”

“Thanks for your help,” you nod quietly, meaning her feeding you reiatsu some matter of days ago now. “How long?”

“Six days,” your daughter informs you warily. “Better or worse than you thought it'd be?”

“Actually... not as bad as it could've been,” you admit.

not necessarily. Me thinks that #99 can be cast with many different flavors of emotions for different effects. True. Riku shot a love Nuke over the entirety of Seireitei, but we could've used a different primal emotion which would've had a different result. If we used raw anger, then #99 would've had an anger flavored warhead and would've destroyed Seireitei and whatever morale it had left in it's inhabitants.

The first order of business, in a rare moment of responsibility for you, is to find your Denreishinki and place a call to the Head Captain. The phone only rings for half a second before he picks up on the other end.

“Don't worry, that was just me,” you explain quickly. “I've been training for nearly the last week, you know.”

Rangiku bites her lip as Shunsui gives his reply.

“What the hell was that, Captain Kusajishi?” he demands, his tone serious enough to catch you off guard. “We're getting reports of people collapsing all over the Seireitei!”

“Look, it's not my fault people couldn't stand all the warm and fuzzy feelings,” you contest. “That was Goryūtenmetsu by the way, finally figured out how to make that one work right.”

There's a pregnant pause. “I'll be there in an hour or so.”

Then he hangs up.

You do the same, and shove the phone back into your sash.

“What'd he have to say?” Yoruichi asks curiously.

“Just that he's going to be there in about an hour,” you shrug. “No idea why.”

“I can give you five reasons,” Rangiku quips.

You spare a glance towards the small prison complex at the center of your Division's grounds, and you can't help but wonder.

“Anything on the prisoners while I was... you know.”

Rangiku shakes her head. “No change I could notice.”

“Well, that won't do,” you frown, taking the first few steps in the march over towards the building in question. “They can't just keep delaying their decisions about what they want to do with themselves from here on. We're out of time.”

I get the terrible feeling that we split our time a little too evenly, and we won't be able to get some stuff done, which sucks a lot and is really disappointing. I really want to see us get all our shit together before the final battle, especially if that's the end of the quest.

What would've happened if it'd been cast with other emotions like anger, sadness, loneliness or lust?

And Riku still hasn't gotten tail #8 or tail #9. We still have a severed arm that has the Oken key in it in the fridge that needs absorbing/destroying for shinreiryoku boosting, and there hasn't been word from the other pantheons.

Did we just shower seireitei with the white essence of our love, with only Yoruichi being able to handle it?
>>
Methinks you are all taking this love bit a tad too literal. Most of the people probably just felt an absolutely crushing reiatsu and promptly collapsed. Sure, Riku knows it was there, but it doesn't seem like anyone else had the overt reaction of saying it felt preddy gud like she did.

I don't know man, I'm just a fucking anon.

Mostly this. Fury for example would have been more unpleasant for a VERY limited number of people, but most people were just knocked out or blinded.

In all practical terms there wouldn't be a difference.

Aww. I guess it's just not nearly as cool, then.

Is R&D studying the Bakkotos brought in by Riku and from the assassins that attacked 9th division to develop a new tool for shinigamis. I know alternative soul cutters are forbidden, but support items like soul pills, Denreishinki, and Gokkon Tekko aren't.

Could they make a neat Bakkoto if Riku found the need to break the rules again?

>pulled off the 99 with basically no consequences
>not cool
???

How happy is Tenkotsuki now that Riku finally mastered casting Hadō 99: Goryūtenmetsu? Rate your happiness Tenkotsuki on a scale of 1 foxtail to 9 foxtails wagging.

Also what primal emotion did you use during your demonstration back in the Valley of Screams? Because the practical effects of Riku's #99 (one giant nuclear blast of WAFF) is vastly different than your version (5 nuclear blasts of raw power with no emotional aftereffects)

What's so funny about Riku casting #99 that made you laugh your ass off Yoruichi?

>>1746410
Yes, albeit the "shower of love" was too intense for 95% of all shinigami and reiatsu sensitives to handle, many of them promptly collapsed before the WAFF sensation kicked in.

Omake idea: What is Riku Training for in Jinzen?
>Riku's Friends, Family, and Co-workers all go visit Riku out of concern for Riku's diminishing Reiatsu and her very long state of Jinzen. Some of them give good luck wishes, Some of them pass some fresh reiatsu for Riku. Gin was half tempted to pull a prank on Riku the moment she exited Jinzen but didn't knowing better. All of them discussed and rampantly speculated on what purpose Riku was training in Jinzen for...

Also, What are their reactions to suddenly seeing 5 white dragons of pure reiatsu manifesting around Riku?
>Apacci
>Halibel
>Starrk
>Mirai
>Kai
>Rukia
>Bambietta
>Gin
>Rangiku
>Yoruichi
>Shunsui
To those who weren't at the scene of this event of are post-mortem: Riku mastered Hado #99, What are your thoughts?
>Yamamoto
>Jushiro
>The creator of the Hado #99 curriculum
>General Rogers (clarification for your convenience: #99 has 50 times the explosive yield than the spell Riku had cast in Europe. And it has homing capabilities delivered by 5 magic-dragon-shaped warheads)
>>
>>1747101
The hado itself isn't as cool, because they can't feel the overwhelming love as the explosion envelops them.
>>
>>1747277
That is probably the fourth dumbest thing I will hear all day. But you're entitled to your own opinion.
>>
>>1747335
Yes, it is my incredibly dumb opinion that the attack would be cooler if people could feel the raw, intense emotion that goes into and is an integral part of casting it.
>>
>>1747277
The people who deserve to feel Riku's love probably did
>>
>>1747144
>Apacci
"Well, so this is a thing that's happening."
>Halibel
"... excuse me a moment, I need to take this."
>Starrk
"So this is what it feels like to wake in a cold sweat."
>Mirai
"Well, time to go get Kai."
>Kai
"Well, time to go find Mirai. Gotta get an aid station set up."
>Rukia
Furiously doodles an image to show to Byakuya
>Bambietta
"Shit am I glad I don't have to fight that again."
>Gin
"... neat."
>Rangiku
"So that's where all our reiatsu was going."
>Yoruichi
Laughing Waifu Noises
>Shunsui
"Ooooh shit... this is it, Nanao. Hold me."
>Yamamoto
"And for so many centuries I was convinced I would be the one to accidentally destroy the Seireitei."
>Jushiro
"They grow up so fast, don't they Head Captain?"
>REDACTED
"That's... not how you're supposed to do it, but I guess?"
>Rogers
"I think a little pee came out."
>>
>>1754997
I like Gin, Rukia and Rogers's the best.
>>
>>1754997
>Furiously doodles an image to show to Byakuya

>So, going by your diagram, Captain Kusajishi cast a spell that launches five bunnies of incredible destructive power?
>Close enough.
