>The Intro
Hey y'all. If you couldn't tell, this quest will be taking place in the well known DC Comics universe. Here there be gods and monsters, magicians and aliens, and even a clown or two. But bear in mind that due to various time travel related and or multiversal shenanigans, the DC world is ridiculously complex as a whole. So I'll be running a very streamlined version of it. And to be up front about it, it will likely be shaped by my own likes, dislikes, and biases.
Oh, and aforementioned shenanigans won't be making an appearance.
Mostly.

>The Rules
I will write up the life of our young hero Morgan Barret, a high school student who has just begun his career as a superhero in Gotham City, you will be given prompts to direct him.
Some things will require a dice roll to determine success or failure or something else entirely. Write In's are absolutely encouraged but I reserve the right to torpedo anything.

The voting period will last 20 minutes after the prompts are given. I will then announce the voting closed and write up the chosen response.

>The Dice
We will be using 1d100 ninety percent of the time here. Best of three. We might use something else when applicable. I'll be running with a loose sort of degrees of success/failure thing here so no real DCs.

Let's have some fun.

Crisp autumn wind whips your dark hair about as you ride through the streets of Gotham, reminding you to cut it as it constantly flaps. You're holding onto the shoulders of Ted since you decided to ride back with him and have a talk with your mom. You've gotta admit, Ted's motorcycle is one of the most impressive vehicles you've ever seen. The powerful machine rumbles beneath as Ted makes one smooth turn after another. Soon, your fast pace slows down to an easy ride once you reach the village. The quaint place is the same as ever.

Ted has been training you for just about a week now and you had an idea that'll give you an excuse to take off or stay out late without need to worry mom. And Ted agreed to it pretty easy so all that's left is to convince her. You leave the borrowed helmet Ted gave you hanging from the handlebars and he follows you up the steps to your humble home. "Alright, so here's the story one more time. I'm going to be working part time for you at your gym and you're going to be training me as part of my payment. That way, I she won't ask questions about where I go or what I do."

He pats you on the shoulder, causing you to jump a little at the weight of his hand. "Relax, Morgan. This ain't my first white lie y'know."

You fumble with your keys for a moment before finding the correct one and inserting it. "I know, I should chill out. I just- I don't like lying to her."

"It's a good thing kid, lying to the people you love should never be easy. Just think of the grief and worry you're savin her."

You can't really find anything to say to that so you just take a breath and open the door. "Mom! I'm here with Mr.Grant!"

After hearing some odd shuffling sounds and the sound of keys hitting the floor, Mom comes around the corner big smile on her face. "Hello! And good to meet you Mr.Grant."

Glancing over, you can practically see Ted want correct both of you, every time he's called Mr.Grant. But he grins and bears it. "Good to me you too, Morgan was dead set on us meetin if he was gonna take the job. Real responsible son you have there."

Mom practically beams at the praise. "Don't I know it. Now, why don't we all have a seat in the living room and hash this out hm?" You all take a short walk from the entrance hallway to the living room and you and mom sink into the couch while Ted has a sit in the matching chair. "So, where to start. How about what kind of work will he be doing?"

"Managing equipment, and greeting customers mostly. We might have the occasional time where I need him to watch the place for me while I go out but it won't happen often." Ted answers nearly right away, leaving no room for doubt in what he's saying. Your honestly more than a little surprised, Ted is such a straight shooter. Didn't think he'd be able to lie so... efficiently.

About an hour and a few glasses of pink lemonade later, Ted rides off on his bike and mom is full satisfied on your new 'part time job'. As the evening settles in you both end up on the couch in the living room, just half watching whatever is on the tv. You're spending the time in comfortable silence until mom breaks it. "So, what are your thoughts on Gotham Academy? Been a little while since I gave you that pamphlet."

Oh joy. You knew this conversation was coming just not so soon. 'I- uh, I've read the thing what feels like a million times now."

She doesn't even look up from her book. "Mhm, and has your meditation lead to any revelations for you?"

"Not really? Ugh, that's not true. Yes and no? I've got all the pros and cons in my head but I just haven't come to a decision yet."

Mom merely adjust her glasses and flips her page. "It might help you to get it all out on paper. Observe everything at once while it's structured. It always helps me find my answers."

You smile as you hop up from the couch to search for a notepad. "Thanks mom." It doesn't take you long to hunt down paper and pencil. Though you take a seat in your room to really gather your thoughts and put to paper what you don't want mom to see. Once you start writing the words just pour from your head to the page and you lay out your thoughts before you. It's time to make a decision.

>This is a big choice so consider it well, it will decide a number of things, so weigh the pros and cons and choose what you think is best! If I can clarify on anything, just ask.

We're young, cutting into training sucks but this will inevitably be better for us in the long run, and we'll be able to catch up better with our training when we're in our 20's and not having to deal with living with our mom.

You flip the notepad down onto your bed and lean back staring at the stark white ceiling. Laying out the pros and cons had just the effect you'd hoped, you can thank mom for that. You blow an errant curl out of your face before gathering your thoughts. Going to Gotham Academy has perks and advantages you just can't ignore. Going will not only open the door to any academic opportunities you can work towards but it'll pretty much make you set on your way to college and the thereafter. And it'll make mom happy.

Mom isn't made of money, but getting a scholarship for college shouldn't be too hard for a hard working student. Yeah, you can do this. You get up from your contemplative position and head back for the living room. Popping your head around the corner, mom looks up from her book and quirks her eyebrow at you. "So, you mentioned you had an in at the school?"

She closes her book steeples her hands in front her. "Yes I do, an old friend and colleague. A letter of recommendation from her and you're a shoe in with your grades. But the real question is, are you prepared for the responsibility?"

Thinking on how fast your life has changed in a matter of months, how uncertain the future is, and how that excites you. The answer was already clear. "Absolutely."

----2 WEEKS LATER

You scratch at your head for what feels like the millionth time this morning as you stand in the center of the courtyard, leaning against an old pillar. Gotham Academy IS old. You can see it in practically everything on the grounds. The cracks in the floor, the vines creeping over the walls of some buildings, the classic architecture with those ugly ass gargoyles Gotham City seems to love so much. You begin to reach for your head again but clench your fist at your side. You always feel a bit self conscious after a hair cut, despite preferring your hair on the short side. Your, brand new blue GA blazer is rolled up at the sleeves to your elbows, and the tan colored pants are just a bit short but you wore your boots so you can't complain.

Standing next to you is Artemis. Your friend is currently doing the same thing she's been doing since you met her on the bus here. Messing with her skirt and grumbling about the length. As if pulling on it could make it longer. "You keep tuggin at it, eventually it's just gonna come off. Kinda the opposite of a solution."

She sighs and tries to relax. "It's always the same with these uniforms. I'm not that much taller than normal but they seem to make these things for grade schoolers."

Which begs the question. "Why didn't you just, I dunno, wear shorts under or somethin."

She frowns. But doesn't say anything for a moment. "I don't really have much of my own clothes."

Your about to ask why not, but your phones beep catches your attention before you can get the words out. A text, from Dick?

(Behind you!)

>Continued
>>
>>1743710
You feel a shiver go up your spine no later than right after you read the text. Whipping your head around, you see Dick leaning against the other side of your pillar. He's wearing the same uniform the rest of the guys are. Except he wears it impeccably, all straight and proper. He flashes you a big grin and you can't help but return it as you shake hands. "Dude! You go here?"

He nods. "For a good while yeah, imagine my surprise seeing you two here."

Artemis, of course, peaks around the pillar and her eyes widen just a fraction upon seeing Dick. "You."

He gives a cheeky half salute. "Fancy meeting you here!"

More than a little confused. You just look back and forth between them and eventually, Dick explains. "Me and the big guy had a run in with Artemis before. Though anymore than that isn't my story to tell."

You can't say you're not curious but Artemis moves on from the subject quickly. "So, I suppose my letter was your boss' doing?"

Dick stays as coy as ever. "Hmm? Not sure. Can't say you didn't earn it, either way."

Artemis seems to accept that. "Fine. So, I guess we'll be seeing each other around then."

"Oh I'm always around, Later." Dick waves goodbye as he heads off for what you assume is morning classes.

"So you know Dick huh?" Artemis tries to get comfortable again.

"Yeah, met him and Batman on like, my second night out. He's a good guy." Artemis just shrugs and starts checking her phone to help pass the time faster. That conversation with Dick makes you think of how she ended up with you here. Apparently, she got a letter for acceptance but never accepted. Her excellence in school had landed her a seat without her even trying. She was on the fence about going for a long time but when I told her I was going she decided to say goodbye to Brentwood with you. And you can't say you weren't glad for it. One of the only friends you've made here moving with you is gift really.

You're about to whip out your own device before someone catches your eye. She steps right in front of you and holds out two thick packets of paper. You look at the paper, then at her. Her big toothy smile makes you wanna squint your eyes somehow. "Hello! My name is Brianna, and I'll be your student liaison here at Gotham Academy!" You and Artemis share a look before taking the offered papers from her hand. A look of acknowledgement off the suffering you're about to endure together.

Brianna practically skips as she leads you both through the halls, and she has MANY things to say about every little thing you pass. The chatterbox tells you everything you need to know about going here and a thousand things you didn't need to know. Both you and Artemis breathe a sigh of relief as you enter the lunch room. Without her.

>Continued
>>
>>1743713
Once you receive your shockingly well made and delicious smelling lunch, the pair of you start to look for a place to sit but you're waved down by Dick before you can find a place. You're not sure why, but you were expecting him to be alone. That's why you're surprised when you see a girl with a head of striking red hair sitting next to him, nose buried in a thick book. Once you sit down Dick introduces you. "Morgan, Artemis, Barbara. Barbara, Morgan and Artemis."

Barbara takes off her glasses, apparently just for reading, and gives you both a genuine smile. "Good to meet you both. Dick has already talked about you, Morgan."

You raise an eyebrow, wondering just how much Dick revealed. But he signals you with a 'no' before Barbara can see him and you relax. "Nice to meet you too."

After introductions everything settles into comfortable casual conversation. Barbara and Artemis seem to be getting along well. During a lull in the conversation you take out your papers which hold the directions to your classes. When you were registering, one class you chose in particular stood out to you.

Applied Sciences. It felt maybe a little sappy, following in mom's footsteps but she'll be proud to hear it. And you won't deny that you're a bit of a nerd. Though it's definitely something you didn't consider until you recognized it's applications for your hero work. It's kind of perfect, your powers and training will give you the foundation you need and your knowledge will supplement it. Yeah, it's all comin together nicely. You enjoy the rest of lunchtime with zero inconveniences and no more Brianna, thank god. Your head fills with thoughts of making some kind of schedule to deal with all of the new shit on your plate when your phone buzzes in your pocket. It's a message. From Dick again.

>(Meet me here after dark, it's important.)

There's a gps location along with the text. This is... damn. You're not sure what to make of this. This isn't really like him. Guess that just means you better see what he wants. The rest of your school day passes by without much trouble or fuss, really the only thing you do is receive detailed packets telling you everything you've missed thus far and what you need to do to catch up. Standard stuff, but shit, this is gonna be just as much work as you thought.

Once night falls later you make a vague excuse about going for a run that mom accepts after a promise to stay in the village. One that you break immediately. It's an odd feeling, flying through the air mostly as a cloud of grey dust, going from building to building to avoid tiring yourself out. You're a superhero now. No doubt about it. But lying to your mom still makes you feel fuckin terrible. You're still you. Despite the changes.

Soon you reach Dick's requested location. A platform on one of Gotham's many bridges. A bit high up but nothing you can't handle. Ever since you've gotten a handle on dispersal you don't really fear great heights anymore. Not like you had friggin phobia before but you just don't give much of a shit about how high you are anymore. You notice the golden blonde hair and emerald green outfit before you even land. Artemis is already here?

Your body reforms as you step onto the platform, high above the cars passing through below. Artemis waves as she walks over. You notice she's in a alternate costume, this one offers more coverage, looks warm. Yeah, you can't imagine spending autumn nights out in Gotham with the exposed midriff. Chilly. "Let me guess, message from Dick?"

"Right on the money, wonder why he didn't feel the need to tell me you'd be here too?"

Artemis shrugs. "Was thinking the same thing."

Looking up at the moon, you see a pair of shadows passing over. Until the slow and start descending, growing larger and larger. Instinctively, you drop into a fighting stance and Artemis already has one hand on an arrow but you both relax when the gliding figure of Robin becomes clear, and he's brought someone else along. Robin lands smoothly in front of both of you, followed by a his guest.

It's a girl, and honestly, the quality of her obviously homemade costume makes you feel like a superhobo. She's got a primarily purple and black costume, with yellow golden accents, most of it's made of tough looking leather. All topped by her cape and black half cowl that has her red hair spilling out of it. She smiles as she finishes her glide walking up to the both of you. Hand outstretched. "So good to meet you both! I'm Batgirl."

You're kind of glad she can't see your jaw drop. No shit you're Batgirl! Most people have hear of her by now, her first appearance was on tv for fucks sake. Play it cool Barret, you didn't nerd out when you met Batman or Robin, granted, the situation was dire. You've spent way too long thinking about this, just shake her hand already!

"Artemis."

"Undecided."

Robin just kind of slaps his forehead at your blunt honesty, Artemis snorts but it gets a giggle out of Batgirl. "I'm sure you'll find a name when you really need it."

"So what's the mysterious important thing we all met up here for Robin? Meeting Batgirl is great and all but I thought you had a mission in mind?"

Robin scratches the back of his head, looking humble for the first time since you've known him. Not that you think he's arrogant or nothin, he just always seems so... sure. "About that, I asked you all to come here because we need to talk. I uh, I kinda told Batgirl here about both of your identities."

You and Artemis just share a look but before either of you can get mad or whatever you're gonna do, he holds his hands up and continues. "But that's just because I trust her! I trust her with my life. But um, she reminded me that every hero is entitled to their secret identities. So she propsed a solution."

Batgirl now steps forward and lifts up her cowl just enough for you to see. "Hey guys."

----1 WEEK LATER

For the second time this week, you taste blood in your mouth. After taking a bad hit from Ted he told you to cool down and replace my tape while he checks on a few things. You're currently in the very secure, very hidden underground level of Grant's Gym. You're not sure how far under you are but you had to take an elevator to get here. And it's a wonder down here. The whole damn place is like a museum for heroism. Wildcat kept all kinds of shit from his missions and from his own personal outings.

And down here is all the equipment you'll need to take your training to the next level. State of the art stuff. Ted says he got it from a mutual friend of Black Canary's. Now that you've gotten used to the rhythm of school and training you're ready to commit one hundred percent. Ted has mostly been teaching you the basics of real fighting, acting as your sparring partner all the while. And fuck can the old guy punch, every fists are like bricks! And you're pretty goddamn certain he's holding back.

Ted shows back up just as you're finish taping up and he he's taking a look over a clipboard, looking downright pensive. "So Morgan, the real deal start here. You ready?"

You've only really got one answer to that. "As I'll ever be."

>Morgan will now begin his training period, which will take a matter of months. Now you will choose what he excels in during this time. Note that he teaches you everything on this list but your choices will become perks, giving you more concrete bonuses and benefits. Again, if I can clarify on anything just ask.

Costume: (HOMEMADE) Layers of thick clothing consisting of a makeshift piece of chest armor, a shirt underneath, a hoodie and a jacket. Thick pants meant for outdoors use and tall combat boots. Hands and face wrapped in boxing tape and eyes covered/protected by goggles. All of this in grey and other dark colors.

Got you senpai.

You've known it before you even began you're training. You can fight, you know that much. But you've relied too much on your powers. When they fail you or they're not enough, you could die. Someone your trying to help could die. And you'll be damned if you go down and leave mom all alone because you skipped leg day. So you and Ted focus on all of your physical training. Boxing is the old man's bread & butter and his specialty, you'd be stupid to not let him pass on everything he can about it. And wrestling for variation and pining down slippery criminals and villains. And lastly, Conditioning to prepare your body for all the punishment you're about to put it through. Ted warned you, this training is gonna be hell. But you'll be all the better for it when you come out the other side. Let's get it done.

>NEW PERKS EARNED

NATURES PROBLEM SOLVERS: You training with Ted grant, has turned you into a very capable boxer. Your metahuman powers combined with your close combat proficiency makes you a fearsome opponent.
[+15 to melee combat]

CHAMPIONS GRIP: You training with Ted grant, has turned you into a very capable wrestler. Your metahuman powers combined with your subduing ability makes it difficult to escape your grasp once in it.
[+10 when restraining or subduing targets]

IRON CONSTITUTION: Ted has helped you to train your body to new heights. Now you can hit harder, take more punishment, and generally accomplish more athletic tasks.
[Bonuses for save rolls and small bonus to any athletic task}

----

Time is beginning to pass you by as you and Ted whip your body into shape to make you truly ready for this. But even with school bearing down on you, you still have time to spend with the people around you.

>>
>>1744419
Worse comes to worse Gray Ghost is totally a good idea.

Get points with Bruce.
>>
>>1744431
No one ever expects that idea to backfire. Most people really don't like when a name gets used for a different person. Or when a character changes. Not saying you shouldn't do it if you want to but you know he might not be thrilled one of his favorite things is being appropriated by someone completely different.
>>
>>1744431

I don't know if it'd get us points with Bruce necessarily but it's a good idea.

And my bad for constantly whining in this thread "But that's the name of a bar in this quest!". It's not. I think I was mixing a thing in this quest up with that shitty DC Cape Quest.
>>
>>1744431
>>1744456
>>1744469
This is all assuming the Gray Ghost tv serial was even a canon thing in this quest. Would be neat if it was our dad's favorite thing or something.
>>
>>1744505

Yeah, that's part of the reason why I didn't wanna say Gray Ghost.

I didn't know if it was canon in this quest or not.
>>
>>1744523
Well, I'm down for Sandman if GG isn't allowed.
>>
>>1744526

I'd rather go with something else, since we're not made of sand. We're like a dust cloud.
>>
>>1744535
Dustman sounds meh compared to Sandman. There's history with Sandman. Also, not every hero name has to go with what the hero does. Wildcat doesn't scratch people and he isn't a lazy asshole for instance.
>>
>>1744546

He fights like a wild cat.

And we could be called Ghast. Or Gast.
>>
>>1744546
But he did dress like a cat and had a magic belt buckle that gave him 9 lives. Unless Morgan inherits the belt buckle and wears cat ears, Wildcat won't be a good match for him.

Grey Ghost, on the other hand, works. He has powers that are ghost like, and his dust his grey. Plus it could have double meaning if the Grey Ghost show is cannon and Morgans dad was a fan of it.
>>
>>1744576
I totally agree. I was just stating a persona doesn't have to be exact and perfect. If the GG thing is canon, fuckin sweet. My childhood obsession with Batman the animated series is useful in a quest.
>>
>>1744600
I was the one who wanted Gray Ghost from the beginning. Just didn't want to constantly put it out there.

>Writing
>>
>>1744707
How is it not a nod to an old black an white tv show? only certain people will get it. If we become GG it'll be because we have a personal connection.
>>
>>1744742
This. In the animated series, GG was part of the inspiration for Batman. I mean hell, the creators even asked Adam freking West to be the VA for GG. Come on guy's let's get a cool pulp feel going. We have a semi-immortal boxer as a trainer that dresses like a cat.
>>
>>1744638
I meant a nod to the actual batman tv show, to me taking the grey ghost name when it exists in game is like if someone went around fighting crime and called himself batman, just feels unoriginal
>>
>>1744787
It exists in game as an old black and white serial character. Not real. We can change that, get that old school cool.
>>
>>1744823
>>174478
Basically take inspiration from the character without directly ripping from him.
>>
>>1744833
Exactly! He wears a fedora and uses a gun. Not really our deal. But taking out crime by the root, having some old school values (since we got trained by Ted) maybe some love for the theatrics? awesome. Who knows, if Sleepy puts my suggestion of our dad liking the serials we'd have some real connection to it too.

The sun is setting on another afternoon of brutal training. The sweat is pouring off of you, even as you rest your muscles in the ground floor of Grant's Gym. Your towel wrapped around your neck does little to stem the smelly tide. You are a sweat volcano. And yet, it feels good. You can see your muscle definition increasing, and you demonstrate your own improved stamina every day as you inch higher and higher up the ladder of pain that is Ted's training regimen.

You tend to take your blissful cooldown periods with some music in your ears and your eyes closed so that no one bothers you. But something is bothering you regardless now. You pop one eye open and spy Artemis, sitting in a folding chair nearby you and staring into her phone like she's waiting for a 8-ball fortune. She's got her back to you, but she hasn't changed position in at least half an hour. And she's doing that thing with her foot again, tapping it rapidly. You've been around her enough to know she does that when she's annoyed, or conflicted.

Let's find out which. Standing from your chair, you end up behind Artemis whose so into her phone she doesn't even notice you. "You're lookin at that thing like it's gonna eatcha."

She starts at the sound of you voice, but relaxes quickly. But she still doesn't look at you. "Morgan, you ever have any problems with your parents? I mean, like serious stuff. Stuff that can't be fixed by I'm sorry."

Oh? Right to the heavy stuff immediately eh? Then your gonna have to pop a squat. Without answering, you turn back and bring your chair over to sit next to her and plop down. A comfortable silence reigns between you as you try to find the right place to begin. "My dad, he uh- he died last year."

"Oh! Morgan I- I didn't mean-"

You wave it off. "Nah it's fine. I'm still healing y'know? But it gets easier. Anyways, me and my mom are tight. Always have been. We've never really had problems like those. Not sayin we never fight, scream, say hurtful things. So let's start fro the beginning. what happened?"

Artemis looks, finally tearing her eyes away from her phone. "It's just me and my mom at home, my real home. My dad he- he's just gone. I'd be fine if I never saw his face again. But the night when I left home, I said some stuff I really shouldn't have. Things I didn't mean, things I only said because I knew it'd hurt her." She squeezes the phone in her hand. How can I ask her to forgive me after that?" She looks right at you, you think you can see the wetness of tears forming in the corners of her eyes.

You'd better choose what you say wisely.

>"I could tell you what my dad used to say, there's nothing sorry can't fix if you mean it."
>"Honestly Artemis, maybe don't ask. You've been doing fine on your own haven't you?"

You pause, thinking of dad's millions of sayings. He's still helping you, saving your ass even now. "Dad used to say, nothin you can't fix by saying sorry if you mean it." Artemis is silent, taking in what you tell her. "So I guess what I mean is, talk to her. No matter how much it hurts or how awkward it is. Because if she's a good mom, she misses you. Probably just want's to see you."

Artemis goes quiet, wiping the tears away before they can fully form. "Your dad sounds cooler every time you mention him."

"Yeah. Yeah, he was the coolest." You pause, looking at the clock on your phone. "I'd give you a hug but I'm covered in sweat and pain."

She laughs, laughs hard. And her laughter makes you join in. Despite your lungs that have been worked over today. As you both stand up, Artemis grabs you in a quick hug before you know it. "Thank you, Morgan. I'm gonna call it quits for today. See you tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow then, I oughta get back to work or Ted will start cracking the ol' whip." You both chuckle at Ted's expense as you part ways. You had almost forgotten what it was like to have friends. People to ask questions like that. It's nice.

----ELSEWHERE

A girl with long golden blonde hair wrings her hands in front of an apartment door. Rather than pacing, she leans against the wall and considers her options. She could go in like nothing happened. It's been four months but she still has the key. Is that too bold. No, she can't do that. She's here to apologize, beg for forgiveness. She can't just barge in. She looks up at the rusty metal apartment number bolted to the door. This is barely her home anymore.

Despite this, the girl summons her courage, adjusts her ponytail for the seventh time. And knocks on the door. As soon as her hand finishes the motion her heart beat begins to quicken. This is a terrible idea, she shouldn't have come back, she doesn't deserve it. No, she can just-

The door opens. Revealing a woman with shoulder length dark hair, confined to a wheelchair. The words are already on her lips. Who is it? But they die before they can be said as she recognizes her daughter. They stare at each other for what must be only a few seconds. But time warps to stretch the moment. Like it has the months they've spent apart. The girl is already rushing to hug her mother before the words form. But as they embrace in the doorway, she says them over and over until she can't stand it.

"I'm sorry."

"Ted! Let me borrow your protege for the afternoon." Dinah's request comes out of what feels like nowhere. You pause during your benchpress without meaning to and struggle to get the weights back in the resting position. Your arms scream at you for your transgressions but you ignore them in favor of listening in on the talk between Black Canary and your mentor.

Ted, replaces the weights as he sits behind you, ensuring you don't kill yourself with the equipment. "What's this outta the blue huh? Got a field trip in mind?"

"Something like that, plenty of things you gotta learn by getting out there. I know I don't have to tell you that." She throws on her signature leather jacket, soaring bird on the back, and whips her hair out as she explains.

Ted just shakes his head and relents. "Alright, but don't drop him in the deep end just yet. The kids had enough of that."

Dinah smiles over her victory and beckons you to the elevator. Confused, but intrigued, you freshen up and follow her out to find her on the bike she rode in on the night Ted took you on as his protege, it's just as sweet as Ted's bike to be honest. She pats the seat behind her and passes you a spare helmet and you climb on without any objections. You ride on out at speeds that make you wonder just what the hell the cops do in this town and soon you end up at what looks like a tough as nails bar. There are many bikes out front and Dinah parks hers right up front.

"So um- what's the field trip about?" You leave the helmet with the bike and shove your hands in your pockets, unsure how to carry yourself here.

>Continued
>>
>>1745438
Dinah on the other hand, signals you to follow her and strides on into the entrance with all the confidence in the world. "More like a field lesson. Ted can teach you a great deal, but there are some skills you'll have to pick up on your own. I'm going to help you get started."

She pushes the door open and you practically freeze in your tracks expecting the entire bar to turn and stare menacingly upon her entrance. But most people just keep to themselves. You keep close to Dinah and have a seat with her at a table and she starts surveying the whole place. "So here's your assignment. I've been tracking a big time drug pusher and dismantling his operations as I go. He's practically finished but he fled Star City right after his last drug den fell apart." She flags down a waitress and orders a drink before continuing. "He's in here. I've already seen him. He doesn't see me, but you can tell just by looking at him he's a man on the run. Can you tell me who I'm looking for, Morgan?"

You're having a hard even responding to all that. What are you? A friggin profiler? You just start looking around the room while Dinah looks on expectantly while sipping a glass of amber liquid.

You do your best to eye the entire room without making it obvious that you're doing so, keeping your eyes low most of the time and sipping the water the Dinah ordered for you regularly. You finally settle on the guy at the jukebox, he's been standing over there for a good 10 minutes, and he was there before you even walked in, he's a stones throw away from the side exit and he keeps looking at anyone that gets near him.

You recognize that sort of behavior from your old home. You tended to not see those people around anymore after a while. "Him. He's your guy." You poke a thumb at him while he's got his back turn and Dinah nods with a smile on her face. "You pass. Now time for the physical exam. Take up position, outside, you'll know what to do."

You just nod and casually get up from your seat and throw your hood up as you head out into the night air. You look around for cameras to discover just on hooked to the outside wall of the bar, but the damn thing isn't even on. Shrugging, you do one final check for onlookers and you throw up your cloud to obscure your face and voice as you stand in front of the exit.

Sure enough, seconds later you hear a crash, a girlish shriek, and then your perp comes barreling threw the door. Dropping into a low and wide stance, you prepare to grab him. He attempts to skid to a halt but it's too late. You grab him with you hands hardened, making it all the harder to escape your girp. You flip him on his ass and pin his arms behind his back, letting his face rest on the asphalt.

Canary comes up a second after, boots thunking on the ground. She looks down at the drug pusher with quiet disdain before patting you on the back. "Well done! You pass again, I'd give you an A." She leans down and punches the guy out cold with one hit before he can even protest. Damn.

Floating off the guy, you wonder just how straight forward this was. "Y'know, I was wondering the whole time if there was some sorta hidden answer or somethin here."

She just shakes her head, strapping the unconscious slimeball to a light pole. "No no. Our jobs are too dangerous and important to do lessons like that in the field. You have good instincts, profiling could be one of your skills if you applied yourself. I was formally trained but street smarts have to be earned."

You can't help but sheepishly scratch the back of your head at the praise. Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to be able to make people by lookin at em. You're learning more here than you even figured. You place an anonymous call to the police before you take off. According to Dinah, this guy is on their watchlist, one more scumbag off the streets tonight. Feels good.

"Dick? Be a pal and stand still, would ya?" You're currently in the underground of Gran'ts Gym, taking on Dick in the arena. Which is really just a high tech fighting ring. The circle you're in can interpret your moves and knows when to call foul and when to declare a win on either side. You've spent most of the fight chasing after the guy. You didn't know he was literally a fucking acrobat! He's been flip-dodging sidestepping practically everything while landing light but irritating strikes.

"And let you punch me out? Not a chance!" Dick gracefully duck underneath your quick right hook but you finally catch him with a left jab in his shoulder. Though he rolls with it and ends up on his feet a ways away from you. Not a problem. This fight you've been putting Ted's constant advice to work. Using your height advantage. Dick's been trained longer than me and has more experience but I can hit harder than him and have superior reach.

You run in with a few light jabs to keep him off of his feet, his spins and leaps around you, delivering high kicks that you sheleter your upper body from by keeping you arms up and close to yourself. This fight is getting close, you can feel it. Time to go for broke! You lean down into a low stance and start ducking and weaving around his hits, Dick must be surprised because he backs off for just an instant. One you take advantage of.

One quick step forward and your within range. You throw your punch, not with your arm but with your whole body. Just like Ted taught you. And you connect. Dick takes the hit and stumbles back, dazed for in instant. Capitalizing on your criticalhit you grab him at the waist and go for the throw, pinning him down to the floor. As soon as he hits the arena announces you the winner. Ah, victory is indeed sweet.

Dick takes in stride, win or lose, like always. "Don't get too comfy now, that's still 5 to 22."

"I'm creepin up you Grayson, I think you better take your own advice." Sparring has become a regular thing for the two of you ever since you were able to hold your own against him in a practice match. It rally helps in your training process to fight against an actual person. Dick is happy to oblige, and the two of you tend to multi-task and chat about nothing while fighting. But today feels a bit different. Dick is unwrapping his hands and feet on the bench next to you when you speaks up.

"Hey Morgan?"

"Yeah?"

"You ever heard of the Flying Graysons?" He says the name with a sort of reverence you've never heard from him before.

"Can't say I have, man." You tell him the truth.

He goes quiet for a bit before continuing. "We would travel with Haly's Circus, used to draw a pretty big crowd if I do say so myself." His chest puffs up with real pride, before he returns to normal. "You told me about the worst day of your life when I asked. So I need to return that trust." Afraid to ruin this by saying anything, you just nod. "Me and my folks, we were the best acrobats that circus had ever seen. It goes way back in my family. Death defying is in my blood, is what I used to think."

Dick tosses his sweaty gear to the side and looks up at the ceiling, maybe just to avoid looking you in the eye, maybe to fins where to take his story next, you're not sure. "My parents were killed by a man, a mobster. For something as meaningless as money. Set them up to fall during a high up act." He laughs bitterly to no one in particular. "It was blind luck that I wasn't up there with them..."

Both of his parents, gone just like that. You think you would've lost it if you didn't still have mom. "You became Robin to keep that from happening to other people."

He throws his gloves against the lockers, the hollow bang just barely startling you. "Heh, I wish. No I wish I could say I was like you, I started this because I wanted to find him, and kill him." Dick looks at you, straight in the eye. "But Batman stopped me. Well, he didn't actually stop me. He just taught me there's a better way. I'd have to become like him to exact that kind of justice. No. I wouldn't be like the man that took my parent's from me."

You sit together in perfectly comfortable silence after he finishes. Cleaning up after your workout.

"Hey Morgan?"

"Yeah?"

"Race ya!."

"H-hey!"

In an odd move, Ted has told you to take the day off. No training, no work in the gym. He's even paying you! But the old man has been a little cranky for the past week. Maybe it's nothing. But you feel like you can't slip up around him without incurring some kinda workout punishment. He's been on a hair trigger and you can't help but to be curious about why. So in an odd move for yourself, you ignore the boss' demand and stick around the underground training area.

When you arrive in the elevator, Ted is standing around near one of his many display cases of paraphernalia from his years as a hero. He barely turns his head to look at you before turning back to the case. "Thought I told you to take off today."

"You did, but somethings eatin you. I can't forget to wipe down a machine around here without you grinding your teeth."

His fists tighten at his sides and for a second you think you made a mistake coming here, but then he relaxes. "You know how it is kid, you get old, you get cranky. Circle of life."

Gonna hafta call bullshit. "This isn't your usual brand of surly though, Ted. What's up?"

"Y'know, sometimes I wish you weren't so damn perceptive." Ted reaches below the case and removes a plate that you weren't even aware of and types in several numbers on the keypad before hitting a thumb scanner. The case opens with a hiss and you come closer, in quiet aw of the items inside. There's all kinds of JSA artifacts here, a golden winged helmet, some sort of brass gun with a wide barrel, a black rounded domino mask.

As you ogle the items Ted steps back and closes his eyes and just stands in silence for a full minute before speaking again. "When you live in the world I do, and you live as ling as I do, you end up saying goodbye to a lot friends." You stop just short of touching the winged helm as he speaks. "I've been to alotta funerals, Morgan. This job of ours, It can get real ugly. Are you sure you can handle it? The possibility and reality of burying your friends?"

You look at the boxer and at his suit, displayed proudly in a case behind him. The deep black suits stature and intimidating face mirror the man underneath. Ted's seen all kinds of shit. Maybe even everything. And it's a damn good question.

You turn back to look at the man, not the costume. "I'm not a stranger to loss, I'd find it hard to believe that anyone in our line of work is. I'm in this to prevent people from having to face the kind of shit I did. I can handle whatever shit the universe is gonna throw at me in the future."

For a moment, you think Ted is gonna tell you not to get cocky or to remember the realities of this life but he just laughs. He laughs like on the night you accepted his offer. "I used to think they didn't make em like you anymore kid. Clearly, I was wrong."

----4 MONTHS LATER

"Not bad Barret." You allow yourself a little self indulgence very once in a while by observing your progress in the mirror. And man, has your time been productive. You're not built like a mountain like Ted, but your muscle definition is quite clear. You pose in a few silly ways to show off to no one but yourself. Yeah, this is what you would call a benefit. A few minutes later you're back in your room, blank notepad in hand again, staring up a just as blank ceiling.

It's time, you need a name. Your training is practically complete and Ted says he's comfortable sending you back out there. But when Dinah asked you what name you were going with you still didn't have an answer. She said she was going to take care of my costume, that she a had a friend who could take care of it gratis. But she needs a name to design it around.

And Ted really pressed how important it is. 'Your name is how you wan't the world to see you when you go out there, who you are when you put on the mask. It' a statement kid. Sleep on it before you make a decision.'

So now here you sit, the names are slowly coming out of your brain at a drip. It's time.

>Time to choose a name! This is permanent, barring an event in which you decide to rebrand yourself. It happens pretty often. Here's a list of names I've compiled. Feel free to suggest one to get backing that I do not list. As always, I reserve the right to torpedo write-ins but I will not abuse my power.

long jacket/coat with a hood and a lower face mask (think watchdogs 1 style mask)

Don’t want to cop Batman’s gig too hard, so no cape I’d think.

Full mask with goggles kind of keeps the aesthetic we’ve got going on. Swap out the hoodie for a double-breasted jacket for some of that pulp feel. Short gloves and knee-high boots.

I dunno, am I trending too close to Spider-Man Noir here? Mostly just trying to keep the same lines in the costume as we’ve had for months, just, you know, tailored.

The Goggles like old school GG, but with a hood and long coat sort of like pic related, but tighter and shorter sleeves. A scarf/stretchy neck protecter to cover our mouth, like how a ninja face mask would look. The boots with tougher end on our the end where our toes are for better kicking power, Gloves with protection our our knuckles to hit better. possibly knee and elbow pads but that's up for discussion. Maybe a utility belt to house special gasses and explosives we make through our specialization in applied sciences, again up for debate. A belt to hold useful shit like a knife to cut stuff like rope with, a special phone just for hero work, gas mask, useful shit we could easily get and carry around.

We could have a voice modulator hidden under the face mask as a back up in case we can use our dust, plus stuff built into the goggles is a great idea, I feel dumb for not even considering it.

So what seeing so far is leaning towards a Gray Ghost for a new age, the double breasted longcoat, tall boots, gloves, I see more people voting for goggles than a mask but wanting to cover it up the face with a high cuff/collar sorta deal like>>1746400 suggested.

There will be of course, a utility belt. With items that mostly towards support for yourself and people in precarious situations. Fire extinguisher pellets, mini rebreathers, high tech zip-ties, that sort of thing. And you'd like the mask or goggles to contain your comms and whatnot.

Sound good?

So do I man. So do I.

Alright! It seems we have a general consensus.

Costume is in all gray. Doubled breasted longcoat with you trademark hood. Lower facemask to cover your face and goggles to contain you comms among other things. Tall boot and leather gloves. Both with protective alterations and studs to make you hit harder. A utility belt, with items that mostly towards support for yourself and people in precarious situations. Fire extinguisher pellets, mini rebreathers, high tech zip-ties, and various useful shit like smelling salts.

One more thing, do you want a symbol? I'm thinking a stylized GG overlapped togther, but not spread across you chest, just emblemized on the upper chest of your coat.

Any objections before I write the next post?

>>
>>1746532
Sorry man, we might be able to revote on the whole symbol thing next session. But I gotta get things rolling.
>>
>>1746518
>more like very difficult to get out of

Like. Like normal zip ties? Honestly outside of street level thugs a zip tie won't really help. Even on "normal" people at higher levels like Deathstroke, he'd probably still be able to kick serious ass without his hands.

For real though if you tie a zip tie REALLY tight people can have serious trouble cutting them even with help. It'll fuck up their wrists but eh, fuck em. Hard to maneuver a knife or scissors in there when it's tight.

Alright it's not important but it seems wasteful to me. Especially when there are people like Poison Ivy running around. Oh no, you got her hands stuck together, uh oh, a vine. You feel me?
>>
>>1746551
I think the point is that they're just way harder cut and you probably wont get them off with a knife/scissors/super strength up to a certain level, and yeah sure, it won't work on certain villains but it'll work on most guys we'll deal with. It's not like we'll be fighting A-listers all the time, even Batman spends most of his time stopping mooks and normal criminals.
>>
>>1746474
>>1746480
Going full wizard is fun though. For one thing I have a lot of money, since I never spent it on a never ending parade of women or having kids. So I bought a plot of land out in the Ozarks cheap and built a house there.

Now I fuck with the locals as a hobby. There's a big stoner community near the U of A, so late at night I dress up like an old man in a shitty gray hoodie and go drive out to Taco Bell to hang out. People assume I'm homeless and mostly ignore me. But when I see stoners stop by for the late night munchies, I approach and start rambling about how they're going to need help soon before pushing some shitty bauble onto them. They always either laugh or just stare in awe. Usually I'm just giving out polished rocks, but sometimes it's other shit I have laying around. One time I actually gave a guy a ringpop and he cradled it in his hands like it was really precious. I laughed for days. One time I found a box of kittens, got 'em their shots at the vet, then gave them out one by one to nerdy girls at the library. Didn't let them say no. Just "here, hold this", pull a kitten out of my pocket, walk away.
Sometimes I give out baggies of oregano to high school kids and let them assume it's weed without ever actually saying it is myself.
One time there was a beat up 14 year old kid walking around at like 2 am, dunno what his story was. I went back to my car, got sword I had for LARPing out of my trunk and gave it to him. Real metal, but blunted. Didn't say a word. Kid looked at me like I was god. I felt pretty good about that one.

Basically, don't sweat it. Being a wizard is awesome.
>>
>>1746556
My point is they don't need to be fancy. If you're fighting someone who is a big deal you'll probably either have something tailored to them or call someone who does to contain them. Why would you waste more expensive things on mooks? We don't have bottomless pockets like Batman.

You agonize over the the name for hours. Ted's words echo in your head over and over. This is what the world will see when I go out to be a hero. It will be my face. It has to say who I am. You wish you could ask mom. You wish you could ask dad...

Maybe... you flip back up from your slumped position. Dad, that old tv show he used to rave about. Gray Ghost... It used to be a radio serial way back in the day too. He used to say that he liked to think it's things like that that inspired so many to put on costumes and fight crime and evil. Stories of justice prevailing, a guy with the will and the way to fight the good fight.

You could almost laugh, dad is helping you even now.The copyright issue does cross your mind but it's not like you're gonna start making money off of the this so you think it'd be impossible to sue you. How're they gonna serve you when you can just fuckin disperse into the air? You'd like to see someone try.

With the name squared away you start to sketch and write your ideas for the costume. It's gonna be a long night of brainstorming.

----NOW

The winter air in Gotham makes you glad for how warm your costume can be. You run your fingers along the rim of your glasses and the simple display gives you directions to the meeting place. You coat flaps in the wind as you fly as across the Gotham night sky. The grapnel makes a strangely quite whirring sound as you go, making you wonder how they got such a powerful engine so small and so quiet. Your 'smart-lenses' and grapnel came courtesy of Batman, delivered by Dick.

He came with the suggestion as learn to use the thing since my flying speed is no faster than swift jog. He got the idea from the first night you worked together when you took off at a high speed despite you hanging on to him, your light weight when dispersed make you capable of flying at a real good pace when using the grapnel to essentially slingshot you through the air.

In a fraction of the time it would've taken you without it, you end up at the requested meeting place. A deep alley separated from the streets and large abandoned from what you can tell. Robin should be right... Ah! There's the smug bastard. He flashing you the peace sign from atop a nearby high up radio tower. He flips off of his perch and glides to the ground floor with you and he keeps walking once he hits the ground. "So, whaddya you got for me Robin? I'm itchin to make a difference tonight."

"Oh I know it, and it's big, bigger than what we can do alone. That's why I want you to meet some people I've met recently." You're about to ask him what he's got up his sleeve but you see a group huddled together coming up in the alley.

>Alright! Now time for a new feature before this session comes to a close. A Multiverse Vote! It's my way of givking you guys more control over what you see and experience in the quest. These sort of votes will allow you to determine things that are completely out of Morgan's hands. Vote however you will!

>[Classic] You see a guy clad in red tactical gear spinning an arrow between his fingers, a tall girl with dark hair and a dark outfit that shines strangely, and another guy wearing a skin tight suit with no shoes. [Speedy, Wonder Girl(Donna Troy), Aqualad] (This will prompt a secondary vote for which version of Aqualad you want.)
>[Alternate] You see a guy who looks to be entirely made of metal save for half of his face, a guy who seems regular at first glance until you realize he's completely green, and girl with skin that stands out just as much wearing a purple outfit. [Cyborg, Beast Boy, Stafire]
>[Unusual] You see a guy wearing a dark blue and black outfit with yellow tinted goggles standing on a levitating manhole cover, a blonde girl in normal clothes whose idly spinning several rocks in the air around her hand, and a girl with a head of copper red hair and light green skin wearing a white and blue get up. >>
>>1746745
I support Artemis silently.
>>

Artemis can't be angry at her husbando.
>>
>>1746787

My dice rolls keep strong all the time

>>1746790

I'm fine with supporting Artemis waifu route. Just so long as we stick our dick into a number of velvet caves before hand

>>1746794

Except if we fucked her sister. And THEN it'd be a hatefucking contest
>>
>>1746790
May your silent ways be strong and your waifu a contender when bigger guns are revealed.

Or you can just blitz the fuck into the waifulock before any other worthwhile girls are introduced. Sorry, Batgirl, but you're only good after you get crippled.
>>
>>1746798

>Sorry, Batgirl, but you're only good after you get crippled.
>after you get crippled
>after

I'm sorry, what?
>>
>>1746802
You heard me. Oracle version >>>>> Batgirl version. Sorry, Barb.
>>
>>1746805

Alright then, strange. But I prefer Cass Cain so I don't give a shit
>>
>>1746808
I respect that.

Fuck, I like both.

Fine, Kaldur.

Next thread when, Sleepy?

I think he's poking fun at the fact it should be "Grayson".
>>
>>1747288

Yes I am.
>>
>>1747288
>>1747293
Hmm. Didn't notice I was doing that. I'll fix it in the pastebin.

>>1747284
Next weekend.

Also, looks like Kaldur wins hands down. Surprised again. I didn't really like his character until the Young Justice show. Garth still exists by the way.

>I didn't really like his character until the Young Justice show.

Same, which is why I picked him.

To be fair, the comics Aqaulad was created when they seen the design for the show, of course Comics went one way and the show went the other.

The one you seen in the TV show is supposed to be first.

I concur. Cass is best girl. Isn't she still a bit too young for where we are in the timeline, though?

For anyone that peeks in here. Metahuman Quest will continue next Saturday at 12 pm PST.

Oh and this thread has been archived.
