Welcome to Do Your Best Quest. A slice of life adventure with supernatural elements where our poor main character is trying to do his best out of the situations at hand, but don’t worry, just trying your best is good enough for him.

After witnessing the dead of your favorite flame wielder violent bully that you claimed he was shooting up the school, you arrived to your apartment earlier, the pure shock of the situation made you feel sick literally. Too bad reality doesn’t want to be kind to you as you appear to be in the bridge between worlds, the place where the powerful entities and humans can interact without leaving their respective worlds.

“Hello, human…” A new distorted voice welcomes you. “I have paid special attention to you the last few hours, you’re a very unique individual, you know? So unique I think you know perfectly why I’m here, right?”

>”I’m not interest in a contract or a pact or whatever you’re offering. Sorry!”
>”Who are you supposed to be? Whose side are you on?”
>”Can you come back in a few hours? I’m really not feeling it right now.”

"Yeah, one could say I have a monopoly on the "seeing ethereal beings" market, which is why you're going to tell me why I should do a pact with you, right?"

"Well, if I was, and I might, I hate to break it to you, but this going to be more job interview then Faustian bargain. And even if I like what you say, I'm going to check up on you with Sarasvati and whoever my teacher's friend's name is for references."

“Oh great, looks like I’m not gonna get any rest tonight…” You mutter to yourself, you stare at the nothingness. “Yeah, one could say I have a monopoly on the "seeing ethereal beings" market, which is why you're going to tell me why I should do a pact with you, right?"

“Indeed. One alone can’t win this war. I do hope you can change your tone, you’re being rude.”

“You’re the rude one here! You just bring me here without my permission! I just want my nap, to be quite honest… Anyway, here is the thing, I hate to break it to you, but this is going to be more of a job interview than a Faustian bargain. And even if I like what you say, I’m going to check up on you with Sarasvati and whoever my teacher’s friend’s name is for reference.”

“You seem be on good company… Fair enough, I’ll be brief. I’m here offering you great power in form of a pact.”

“I know that part of the deal, but I need more information on what I’m getting into, like who are you supposed to be? And whose side are you on?”

“I’m Philonune, the one the light can’t blind. I’m here to take my enemies down and bring them pain.” In the same way it happened before, two eyes appear from the darkness. They don’t look threating, that’s new.

“Who are your enemies?”

“The false Creator, the tyrant of light and his minions.”

“You mean the Creator?”

“That's what I said.”

“That’s it?”

“You were the one who wanted me to be brief. You can verify with your friends what type of ‘ethereal being’ I’m, but I’m not so sure if I’m going to be available for much longer. ”

>”I’m not interested. Good-bye.”

“What are the terms and conditions, and what “benefits” I would I be given?”

“You’ll be given anything you want since I will be strong enough to provide it if we win. Aside from that, you have to understand you have complete control over me in your world, even if you use me to fight for The Creator I could do nothing… Unless you go to sleep... ”

“Uh… Maybe we can strike another type of deal? I don’t want to put my life in more unnecessary dangers… I’ll let you hang around, you won’t be my partner or anything, but I’ll try to keep you safe or something.”

“I can’t manifest in your world, the only way I can is by taking your strength, and the only way to do so is if we make a pact. Thank you for your offer regardless.”

“You have made a strong case, I’m inclined to accept your offer, but it will be foolish of me if I don’t take the extra measures and talk to the other entities I know.”

“I understand, I’ll wait for your response tonight, I can’t give you more time than that.”

“One question before we wrapped up, are you a dude or a chick?”

“It doesn’t really matter, does it? Besides my form will be shaped after your soul if we make a pact anyway.”

“B-but…”

“Have a nice rest; I’ll wait eagerly for our next meeting.”

“You don’t recognize me?”

“Ah?”

“I’m the owner of the clinic!”

“Oh…”

“HahAHhahAHHA! You don’t have to change the tone like that!” His laugh is still creepy. “I’ll need some extra workforce for tonight; can you come today to work? It’s a special occasion! I’ll pay you extra”

“Uh… yeah, sure, I’ll be there.”

“Excellent! I’ll see you later! Good Bye.”

“Bye.” You hang up… You expected something else for some reason.

You put on your casual clothes and go for a cup of water, your throat feels dry. You take a sip… Maybe you should continue sleeping, but you don’t feel tired, just wobbly if that makes any sense. It would be wise if you tell Uccelli where you are going to be later. You call her, she hangs up immediately, you receive a message from her.

“I’m in the middle of a meeting, if this is really urgent call me again.”

You write to her where you’re going to be later today.

“Don’t overwork yourself.” She answers back.

You paid attention to your messages and Amelia send you 27 messages in Chat-Now and you have 4 missed calls from her. She must be a little bit worried, you thought Uccelli called her before, what’s going on?…

You call her. You’re a bit worried.

“Johnny?! Finally you called me back!” She sounds extremely happy.

“What’s going on? Are you okay?”

“I should be the one asking you that! How are you?”

“I’ve been better… What’s up with the calls?”

“You didn’t read my messages? I was trying to wake you up! I can’t unlock the door by myself! I was passing the time at the minimarket; I’ll be there in minute! Whoosh!” She hangs up. I guess you should have read the messages before jumping to conclusions.

Someone knock the door, you go and open, of course it’s only Amelia.

“I was super worried! Hehe” She exclaims while entering the apartment.

“But I told Ms. Uccelli I was fine…”

“But you told me we were going to handle him after school, t-together! So n-no one would get hurt! So w-why you put yourself in danger? W-what happened… w-what happened to… to… our plan?... How can I trust you if you do something like that?” She’s in the verge of crying. She was probably holding that since Uccelli called her.

“I’m sorry… It’s not going to happen again.” You headpat her in brotherly manner. She quickly goes for a hug.

“Do you promise?” She stares at you.

“I’ll try my best to keep my promise…”

That’s good enough for her, both know nobody is perfect. After a minute or two she finally calmed down. You two sit at the couch.

“But what happened?”

“Well he and his partner were on the other team, and he was completely mental… he chased me into traffic and… Well, it ended as you might expect.”

“You two talking out your differences?” From any other person this would have been a joke, but your sister is serious. She’s a bit naïve.

“Ehm… No…”

“Don’t tell me he…”

“Yeah…”

“No… Ms. Uccelli didn’t tell me what exactly happened.”

A minute of silence for Blake. We barely knew him.

“Okay, no more bad vibes! You need to relax now! I’ll prepare you something to eat.”

Your sister wants you to relax for the day, but you have work later and need information about the entity who just talked to you.

What do you do?

>Relax until you need to go to work. You can take it easy.

“It’s okay, I’m fine, but I need to deal with something first.”

“What is it?”

You explained what happened between you and this not so mysterious entity, and that you’re going to go to work later.

“See! I told you! Not all of them are bad!”

“Technically we’re going to found out now.”

You take her flame and put it on our eyes. You’re once again in the Bridge between Worlds.

“Let’s make it brief, shall we?” Saravasti says. She still looks incredibly pettable.

“You hear me before, right?”

“Indeed I did, what is the name of the creature you speak of?”

“Philonune, he was something like a light hater.”

“Oh yes, I know something about him, he’s one of the fallen angels.”

“Does that mean he’s strong?”

“These days it means they abandoned the guidance of The Creator, sadly there is one Lucifer and he’s not. But compared to the competition, he’s strong.”

“Is he evil or not?”

“I can’t tell for sure, most of these fallen angels just resent The Creator and that’s what all of them are all about. He will win the competition, get rid of the creator and do nothing of worth after; I could do that but also bring an era of peace to your realm!” She boosts her confidence. “I would ask him what his intentions are…”

“So he’s a guy?”

“Probably, they usually are.” She shrugs.

“Awww…”

“Just take care of your sister and everything will be fine, okay?”

You wake up. You manage to piss off Saravasti a little. You have a blanket on and a sandwich in front, your sister is next to you watching TV.

“There is a real superhero on TV… Anyway, how did it go?”

“Pretty standard.”

“Look at the time, I don’t think you should go, but it’s time for your work!By the way, Ms. Uccelli called me and said she will arrive here in half an hour.”

“Extra pay is extra pay, Amelia.”

“Just call me if you need anything! I’ll be ready! It’s in the clinic nearby, right?”

“Yes. Tell Ms. Uccelli to call me when she gets here, and if I can’t answer I’m probably busy working.”

You take your uniform and leave to your work, Amelia wishes you luck. You feel fine physically now and for some reason you don’t expect too much work today. At the clinic, the owner is at the reception.

“Hello, Mr. Ando, I was waiting for you!”

“Hello Mr… Uh…”

“Calamity, Imminente Calamity.” …Is that seriously his name?. “If you wonder if I’m serious, that’s my name; quite unfortunate for a doctor, but that’s life… or in my patients’ cases, dead! hahahaAHHahHAHa.” You’re never going to this clinic as a patient.

“So what do you need me for? Do you want me to clean up the other room?”

“Not exactly, I already cleaned up that room, but there is a patient I need you to… entertain.”

“Entertain?”

“I have a little new intern here who had a terrible accident months ago, poor little thing can’t do much and not a single soul has visited her since she arrived; supposedly she got sick of the other clinic she was in so she will be for the meantime until they find another one she can fit in. So thought you looked like a nice guy to make her company. You know it’s hard when you care about patients but you look like me! They think they are in a morgue instead of a clinic and they want me away… Of course, this is not why I hired you and I don’t mind if you want to decline and do your normal job as a janitor, but I would really appreciate if you do this instead, at least only for today. And by appreciation I mean extra pay. What do you say? Are you in?”

“I’ll be extremely happy if you want to do this more. She really needs company. And don’t be fooled, she can talk.”

“O-okay?” You are confused. Mr. Calamity shows you the patient’s room, they are like 6 here in total, so guessing here wasn’t going to be trouble anyway.

You open the door, inside there is an unsettling little mummy in a bed holding a book, he’s staring at you intensively since the moment you enter. If you had to guess by his size, he’s probably 7 to 9 years old. Is this the patient? What happened to him? Or her? She was a girl right? Anyway, the awkwardly creepy atmosphere is only getting worse.

“I came here to clean the room.”

“…” She closes the book she was reading.

“What’s your name?”

“…” She keeps staring at you.

You don’t have to pretend to clean if you actually do it, you scrub the floor with your broom, the place is tidy and clean so you’re just wasting your time… You turn around, she keeps being vigilant.

“Uh… On a 1 to 5 star scale, what would you score it?

She open her hand wide open towards you.

“So a 5?”

She nods.

“So it’s great. I’m more of a mystery novel guy, but maybe a charge of theme would be nice.” You only have read like 2 mystery novels in your whole life, but she doesn’t have to know.

“Could you lend me your book for a second? I want to know what’s about.”

She looks apprehensive for a little moment, then she extends to you her book.

“Thank you, it’s not going to take long.”

You read the synopsis in the back of the book.

“The young princess of the Yerhimban kingdom was born with a strange and incurable illness, she was hidden from its people until one day her disease started to spread out, and unlike with her highness the disease was deadly to other people. She was blamed for the epidemic and was casted away from her birthplace forever.

The crystal princess as she was known in her kingdom sets on an adventure to find the cure so one day she will be able to return home.”

That doesn’t sound fun at all. You wonder why she likes it. You look at the author’s name, it is familiar to you, but you have never read something from him.

“So, have you read any other books this guy wrote? Anything you can recommend?” You hand her book back.

She stares at you silently.

“Would typing it on my phone be okay with you?”

She extends her hands to you again; she seems willing to do it. You hand her your phone with the memo app on. She slowly writes with it, then she shows you the screen.

“Thsi is the frisdt 1 of the series. They area ll raellly goodd” She’s very bad at typing.

“I’ll make sure to read them, then.” A promise you’re not so sure you can keep.

Now you have found a way to communicate with her. What do you do?

“What’s your name?”

“Constance.” She writes perfectly. Maybe you should get her a phone.

“Nice to meet you, Constance, I’m Johnny.”

She nods.

“Hey Constance, do you like videogames?”

She says no on the phone, she could have just nodded…

“Have you ever played videogames?”

She shows you again her phone, that’s another no.

“But why don’t you like them if you have never played them?

“Because my friends don’t like them.” She writes badly on her phone (for the sake of clarity I’m going to write her messages correctly.)

That’s weird, Mr. Calamity said she no one paid her any visits. Heck, this is the main reason you’re here.

After your small passionate talk she seems to agree with you with her quick nod, she seems enthusiastic about it.

“And what friends convinced you anyway?”

“The ones who are watching me.” Constance writes.

She stares at you confused; Constance begins to write something on her cellphone, she suddenly stops for some reason. Your phone starts ringing, she hands it back. You check the screen, it’s Ms. Uccelli. Early you told your sister when Uccelli arrived to your apartment that she should call you.

She shrugs. You handle her your cellphone back. She finishes her message from before.

“They don’t bother me with that anymore.” She writes… Oh shit, this is going to get serious.

“Can you bring your friends here now?”

“Okay…” She speaks, her voice sounds weak. “Guys… come here…”

“Why do you have so many of them?”

“Sometimes pieces of them come here, I reassemble them and I turn them into flames.” They keep dancing around her.

“And they don’t leave?”

“They don’t want to. They sure like me!”

“Can you talk to them?”

“Yes, if I put them on my eye!”

“So… What do you mean you’re not crazy?”

“You can see them! The spirits! They exist! Everyone left me because they thought I was crazy, now they will come back.”

“Unfortunately, I can’t tell them that. Most people don’t believe people who they just met for the first time.”

“B-but I’m not crazy…”

“You’re not, but this will take some time. Anyway, I’m going to need to talk to your friends, which one is the boss of these guys?”

“There is no boss! We all are equals! We all are friends.”

“Okay… I’ll pick one at random.”

You pick a flame and shove it on your face. You’re in the bridge between worlds, the place is pitch dark.

“I failed… I failed… I failed…” Oh my god, it’s Ethinael’s voice, Blake Wilkinson’s partner. You can’t see him in the darkness.

“Are you okay?”

“There is no okay… It’s all over, wait…” a broken Ethinael appears, he’s shaking. “It’s you, the one who made my partner go berserk…”

“What’s going on? Do you want revenge on me?”

“No, it’s futile… The Creator didn’t save me, his light only blinds his followers to death; it was all over when I… died. Everything is destined to perish… ”

“Can you give me some information?”

“I told you everything is futile… It’s all over… I failed… I failed… I failed.” His figure disappears into the darkness, you try to reason with him but he keeps going on loop.

You wake up.

“How did it go? He’s a new one, he isn’t very talkative.” Constance says. “Their hearts stay broken when I reassemble them. They are so sad; they can’t do anything besides floating around me.”

“I’m going to take another flame. I’ll see you soon.”

“Okay…”

You’re back again, its pitch dark here too.

“Who are you?”

“I once was known as Nermento-o… But now, I’m nothing.”

“I’m sorry it didn’t go so well, which side did you fight on?”

“Mine. I was too greedy to realize the person I made a pact with was a lunatic.”

“Anything I can do to help you move on, or at least feel better?”

“You’re a good person; I wish I picked you instead, haha. But no, I’m fine; in this state I at least will see who ends up winning.”

“What’s Constance doing to you?”

“She somehow reassembled my ashes into this flame, but since we lost the battle we are virtually useless. Those were the rules.” I don’t remember that being part of the rules.

“So you’re harmless?”

“My energy can still be used to feed another entity, too bad we’re just a fraction of the beings we once were. I’m completely sure the kid you’re dealing with is capable of doing that. Take care of her.”

You wake up with your cellphone by your side. Constance is sleeping and the spirits are gone. You read your phone.

“I got tired, please visit me again, Johnny!”

You don’t have many details about how Constance’s ability works, but keep in mind she’s not in a great physical shape. There are still so many mysteries surrounding her, but now it’s time to go home.

Time to get food for the ladies! You went to the minimarket with the idea of buying somewhat expensive ingredients for dinner, you’re thinking of buying premium steak and some vegetables… maybe is not a good idea... You want to buy desserts too, because obviously chicks love desserts, but you’re unsure of what type of dessert you want to buy, or what type of food you want in general.

What does Ms. Uccelli likes? Apart from cakes… You are not sure, but based on the type of meal she made yesterday you think you have a pretty good idea of her tastes. She’s a refined lady, she must like refined food. You bought everything necessary for a great expensive meal for the ladies, 60 Gor$ well spent… At least you’re going to have quality food for a few days, right?

You arrive to your apartment, because you don’t have the keys, you knock the door. An angry yet beautiful Ms. Uccelli opens the door.

“So you finally arrive, Mr. Ando… Now can you explain to me and your sister what’s going on?”

“Hey Johnny!” Amelia waves at you from the back.

“I’m sorry, this is what happened…” While explaining you take the bags to the kitchen, you tell them everything you remember happening.

“Poor little girl.” Amelia says after you finish talking.

“Do you think she would mind if we pay her a visit?” Uccelli asks you.

“I don’t know, I don’t think she would mind, she seemed pretty lonely.” You respond.

“Wouldn’t it be weird that the janitor brought a bunch of friends after meeting her for the first time? Let Johnny be the one who talks to her for now.” Amelia interjects.

“You’re completely correct… Alright, Mr. Ando, when you feel it’s appropriate we will pay her a visit, okay?”

“Okay.” You answer

“Now that’s settle we need to talk about the elephant in the room. Why would you do all that without any of us being with you? You know it’s dangerous, we don’t know what those entities were capable of. You are making harder and harder for us to trust you…”

(Fug, I just finished the reply, sorry I went for safety.)

Doing your best is knowing your limits, time to cook something safe, no one can fuck up a good steak, right? You hope the quality of the food would be enough to elevate what would be otherwise a decent meal.

You’re no expert, but cooking for yourself all of these years made you learn a trick or two, you marinate the steak in olive oil and rub some salt in it with your hands. You clean the vegetables; you combine some of them and garnish everything. And Voilà! Everything is ready to be served. A good piece of stake with delicious salad by the side and special rice with that home touch… The real punch is the dessert anyway, this delicious strawberry cake you bought, Uccelli likes cake and Amelia likes strawberries. It’s a win-win.

You serve them the meal… Uccelli looks mildly content with while Amelia looks somewhat disappointed.

“Is this your surprise?” she picks up her fork and touches the meat.

“Don’t be picky with your food; I know your brother did a great job.” Uccelli smiles.

“My surprise is the dessert anyway. This is just an appetizer.”

You three eat dinner, everyone enjoy it for what it was.

“Delicious. Good job, Mr. Ando.” Uccelli says.

“Yeah! It was better than expected! Now, where is the dessert?”

You bring the delicious (and expensive) strawberry cake. Both of them stare at them like they just found the holy grail. While the cake by itself doesn’t look impressive, the smell and how immaculate it looks is driving them both crazy.

“Is.. is… that strawberry cake?!” Amelia jumps up and down in excitement.

“Yup. Take a piece.” You gave her cake, Amelia seems to love it. Uccelli takes a piece too; of course she loves it too.

“My god, where did you buy this?” Uccelli asks you while enjoying it.

“Would you believe I made it?” Both of them look pleasantly surprised.

“Brother, you’re really good!” Amelia says while eating, somehow you understood it.

“Yeah, I’m impressed!” They both believe it. Your ego stat goes up! (Ego is not a real stat.)

“Wait, I didn’t hear you cooking!” Amelia spots your lie, you ego stat goes down. “And you didn’t have the time yesterday anyway! I was here all day!”

“It was a joke; I got it from the minimarket.”

“That sounds more like a joke to me… But seriously, the minimarket?” Uccelli looks really surprised.

“I know, right? I wouldn’t have expected it from there either.”

“Iff Bwreith!” Your sister says with her face stuffed.

“You got cream all over you sweater.” Uccelli takes a napkin and cleans your sister’s clothing. She swallows her food.

“Don’t worry; I can take care of it.” She takes the napkin away from Uccelli and cleans herself.

You decided not to eat any piece of the cake because you think those two will enjoy it way more than you ever will. That reminded you…

“I have to deal with an entity later.”

“Paputoopy, right?” Your sister asks.

“Yeah, you told me about that before your brother arrived.” Ms. Uccelli adds.

“I don’t think it was Paputoopy…” You can’t remember his name either.

“You should talk to him while we are here, I don’t want to worry unnecessarily at home.” Uccelli proposes.

“Yeah, sounds like a good idea.” Amelia agrees with Uccelli.

“Will you accept?” Uccelli asks. “I wouldn’t do it if I were you.”

I like our no powers dynamic right now.
fuck, we might not be able to see flames if we get powers. plus our teach and sister cover the powers needed on the team

Personally, I'll probably say yes to him but it's still better to wait and see what it'll offer.

> I don't think so. Having the ability to communicate with other entities is a very useful ability and based on how your entities rejected each other when they were put together i assume i would lose the communication ability.

“I’ll see if he can convince me. I don’t know if I should because I could lose my power to see the flames; but one day I’ll need to fend for myself, I can even be used as against Amelia by being kidnapped, and that's not good. Maybe he can offer something really cool… but I don’t know… I’m conflicted.”

“Your ability to see the flames is the most useful ability among us.” Amelia says. “It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the one who are going to get us through battles but it’s the one who will put us in comfortable positions for them.”

“Strategically, you’re correct, us two can protect him, but I don’t know how comfortable your brother is with all this, at the end of the day, he’s the one who is 'defenseless'… In other hand, nothing really tells us that you will lose your power right?” Uccelli adds.

“I already said I don’t know.” You retort.

“Well, it’s your call anyway. Good luck.” Amelia smiles.

“Make yourself comfortable and remember we have your back.” Uccelli says.

Well, here goes nothing, you try to sleep... in your room, it was too uncomfortable being with those two, at least for sleeping with the lights on while being observed.

“Welcome back, human.” It’s Philonune’s voice. “I was waiting for this.”

“You see, I want to hear your offer more thoughtfully.”

“Wasn’t the entity you talked with enough?”

“I know you’re a fallen angel and you hate The Creator, but that’s about it.”

“What do you want to know about me?”

“What’s your plan?”

“Take down the Creator.”

“But then what?”

“I don’t care, my mission will be fulfilled, I’ll let the entities fight one another without my meddling until another king needs to be selected.”

“Wait, this happens often?”

“This is only the third time it happened, and this is the first time your world is being the host for it. Don’t ask me about what happened before, because that was eons before almost all the entities that are alive right now existed, sans The Creator, of course.”

“Would I lose my power to see the flames if I make a pact with you?”

“I don’t know, you’re the first of your kind that I know of that can do such a thing. But answer me this… did any of your partners lose their ability to walk when they made their pacts?”

“I get…” Do you really want to risk it, thought? And that's different... kind of. “Anything else you have to offer.”

“Is complete loyalty good enough for you? Well if you do your part of the deal and take down with the Creator with me, that is.”

>”Being honest with you, I’m completely sure you’re not a big deal and I know I can get a better partner, sorry man, it’s not personal, just business.”

He seems nice if slightly blood knighty. Maybe explain that we won't kill the creators servants willy nilly unless there's a good reason

Teach said it herself, seeing flames is what makes us the most useful and you're all gambling it on the line for some fuckup we can't trust.
>>
>>1755799
I'm pretty sure that we won't actually lose the powers of seeing flames. The only people who brought it up were players
>>
“Okay, my man, let’s do it, complete loyalty is good enough for me. But we are not going to kill The Creator’s servants willy nilly unless there a good reason, okay?”

“Very well, let’s join forces and let’s take the Creator down together!” you aren’t sure if he listened to you…

The eyes open wide open and a ray of light comes out of them to you... You start feeling Goosebumps around all your body, it’s kind of itchy… after some seconds in the air you come back to the floor.

“That’s it?”

“Slowly we will assimilate until I will have my true form.”

“Can you change shapes? I have this magazi—“

“I will change accordingly depending on your soul. You will like it.”

“I’m not so sure about that.”

“Haha, it doesn’t matter now young one.”

“You wouldn’t know how to make delicious deserts would you?”

“I don’t know about human cuisine, but we can learn together.”

“You’re in a good mood.”

“I hope we can share it too.”

“I’m happy I guess.”

“Let’s bring our enemies pain! And obtain victory”

“Yeah, okay, why not? Uh…”

“I will see you soon, Ando.”

You wake up! You finally have made a pact with an entity, ‘the one the light can’t blind’: Philonune! You will soon see the effects of his power in you! But that’s everything we have for this thread. See you next time and thanks for playing!

Why do I get the feeling this is important?
>“I don’t care, my mission will be fulfilled, I’ll let the entities fight one another without my meddling until another king needs to be selected.”
Maybe by the end of this, the more we do you best, the more we make Philo less lazy. It was mentioned that a lot of entities against the Creator just feel like taking him out and not doing much else afterward. Gotta break that and inspire him to do his best AFTER we save both worlds too.

Reminder that Amelia is best gril.
