You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you have been politely asked by Princess Lucina to to help her "remove" some troublesome Oriental warriors that had been harassing her subjects.

Warriors who were apparently searching for Niko, your most recent party member. Seemed like a good opportunity to remove two problems with a single strike.

Your first target was the warrior designated "Spear", due to her weapon of choice. It was easy enough to find her, as her Oriental clothing made her stand out even among the multi-cultural melting pot of Eisenwand. You could already see she was wearing relatively light, segmented iron armor bound together with leather. Not nearly as hardy as your plate armor, but given the reach of the long spear she was carrying, she probably didn't need such levels of protection.

So far, she wasn't aware of your presence, as she glared menacingly at everybody who passed by her.

You step out in front of Spear, your halberd drawn and ready. You make sure Spear sees you well and fully. She tilts her head curiously.

"To draw your weapon... do you mean to challenge me?" She asks, more curious than angry.

You nod.

You swear you can hear Spear chuckle as she reverts to a battle stance.

"Then come at me, Templar." She challenges back. "I, Nobushi, shall be your opponent."

Already, you could see the crowd clearing out to give you both enough space to battle in. You were both located in a market square, so there was ample space to move around. You do note that, instead of fleeing completely, most of the townsfolk have become spectators. A number of adventurers had stopped to observe as well.

No matter, it would be a chance to prove the strength of the Black Templars. You focus on your opponent in front of you.

That long spear of hers was going to be an issue. Her longer reach meant that she would likely get the first hit in on you. However, you had much tougher armor, so you figure you could afford to take a hit in order to get close.

Nobushi suddenly stops twirling her spear and locks it into her grip, thrust forward with lightning speed. From the angle, you could already tell she was trying to aim for the gap in your armor under your armpit. You quickly shift your own stance, angling your torso so Nobushi's speartip instead glances off your chestplate. There's a screech of metal scratching against metal, but otherwise you don't feel a thing.

You respond by jabbing the handle end of your halberd into Nobushi's chest, serving the dual purpose of knocking the wind out of her and forcing her back so that you can follow up with another swing. The hammer end of your halberd connects solidly with Nobushi's chestplate, the armor completely useless against the sheer blunt force.

Nobushi is thrown back, her boots grinding against the pavestones as she skids to a stop. She briefly uses spear as a support stick to keep her on her feet as she tries to recover.

The crowd remains silent. Possibly because they didn't quite know who to cheer for.

You decide to hold back for a bit. It was unsporting to finish off an opponent in this situation. You note a few hushed murmurs among the crowd, though you're not sure if that was a good sign or not. Well, not as if you cared about their opinion, anyways.

Nobushi finally manages to get back up to her feet. She gives you a silent but respectful nod as she readies herself. From her body language, you could tell she was preparing to go on the offensive. Well, you couldn't blame her. Considering the damage you dealt out, she wasn't going to win a battle of attrition at this point. You see her leap forward, her spear outstretched with one arm like an extension of it. It was obvious that she was putting as much forward momentum into her strike as possible.

Intending to end this in one decisive blow, eh?

You try to use your halberd to bat Nobushi's spear aside, but the Oriental warrior had much finer weapon control than you, you had to admit. A flick of her wrist changes the position ever so slightly, enough that as the handle of your halberd clashes against the shaft of her spear, it instead deflects downwards and cuts your arm at the segmented joint on your elbow. It wasn't deep or life threatening, but it was certainly painful.

With her damage done, Nobushi quickly pulls back, trying to get more distance.

Nobushi tries to get into a defensive stance, but you drop your halberd and bat her spear away with your uninjured right arm. In this close, and with no momentum to power her weapon, the was nothing she could do. You continue forward, shoulder checking Nobushi and using your own sheer momentum to propel her directly into a nearby wall with a loud CRUNCH.

Nobushi falls limp.

There are gasps among the crowd and some sporadic applause.

"Shameful display." You hear a grunt.

You turn to see both Sword and Club already present, wearing similar segmented armor like Nobushi, but obviously much thicker and heavier. They were also wearing horned helms, making them seem very intimidating.

"You fight well for a foreigner." Sword grunts.

"Still puny." Club growls. You notice he was absolutely massive, taller than even you.

"You wish to challenge me?" Sword steps forward, hand on his sword hilt. "Then I, Ryoma shall be your opponent!"

Well, you suppose you could look for some healing for this wound-

"Honestly!"

You freeze up when you hear that familiar, domineering voice. You turn to see Valentia stomping up, an annoyed expression on her face.

"I hear news of a Black Templar dueling with Oriental warriors in the streets, and I knew it had to be YOU." Valentia groans as she gives Ryoma and his companion a suspicious look. "And of course, you go and get yourself hurt."

You hold your arm out to her.

"What, you think that just because I'm a Paladin, I can just heal your little injury?" Valentia sighs.

You nod.

"Fine." Valentia grunts. "But in return, you let me fight his buddy."

"Done." Valentia nods and steps back. "Good luck with your duel, Templar!"

You give her a thumb sup and turn to face Ryoma. His sword remains in its sheath, though his hand is still gripping it. He's in a very low, almost crouching stance as well.

"Are you ready, Templar?" Ryoma asks.

You nod, getting your halberd ready. You had the reach advantage this time, but Niko warned you that Oriental swordsmen were quick and precise in their attacks...

And just like that, there's a flash of light as Ryoma draws his sword one lightning fast motion directly into a slashing attack. You barely have any time to react, raising your arm to block the sword strike. The curved sword strikes your armored forearm with a loud CLANG. Worryingly enough, you can feel the blade digging into your armor. Was it enchanted somehow?

"Impressive, to have avoided a lethal blow." Ryoma notes as he pulls back.

You quickly inspect your forearm, and note the large, clean break caused by the sword. It wouldn't be blocking any more blows in this state.

Ryoma then transitions into a high stance, keeping his sword raised over his head with both arms, ready to swing down at any moment. He obviously was planning to put all his power into his next blow.

You decide to put this Oriental armor to the test. One helmet to the other! You grab Ryoma's arms to keep him from being able to move away as you crane your head back and thrust it forward with full force...

Two helmets collide together like mighty titans. The sound of metal ringing echoes throughout the entire square. Fortunately, you were trained for these sorts of attacks, and your opponent evidently was not.

Ryoma wobbles back and forth before falling down face first into the ground.

How disappointing. And he had put up such a good fight, too.

There was now some more cheering and applause at your victory. Maybe you were starting to win the crowd?

"All right, it's my turn, then." Valentia grins as she steps forward, shield and sword ready.

"Hmph. So the mighty Templar hides behind a little girl? How pathetic." Club grumbles as he lumbers forward.

"Hey! I'm no little girl!" Valentia scowls.

You can almost swear you see Valentia smile, but she strides forward before you could be absolutely sure. The crowd universally cheers at the sight of Valentia, though. Paladins were just that much more popular among the general populace.

Club seems to regard Valentia with disdain as he hefts his mighty weapon. Valentia, however, refuses to be intimidated and keeps her shield raised in a defensive posture.

"C'mon, big guy." Valentia grins. "To keep things fair I won't even use any of my magic!"

"Such insolence!" Club roars as he swings his club in a mighty lateral arc towards Valentia.

Valentia raises her shield, but rather than try to take the full brunt of the attack head one, you see her crouch down and angle her shield. The club strikes Valentia's shield with a ear cracking THUNK, but bounces off thanks to the angle.

Had she taken that blow head on, you were sure she'd have a broken arm. Thankfully, Valentia had learned a thing or two since you met her. While Club was still recovering, Valentia straightens back up and charges forward. She flips her sword so that she's gripping the blade instead of the handle and slides up in front of Club. She then jabs her sword upwards, smashing the pommel directly into the bottom of Club's chin, stunning him even further.

Valentia then makes a quick followup attack, spinning around and crouching at the same time, driving the edge of her shield right into the side of Club's left knee.

And the mighty giant falls.

The crowd starts cheering wildly for Valentia as she stands back up. Looks like she has things handled here.

As the crowd cheers, the City Guard (finally) arrives to drag the knocked out warriors away. No doubt to be "politely" shown out of the gates. All according to Lucina's plan, you suppose. Valentia doesn't even wait to bask in her popularity, as the first thing she does is make her way up to you.

"So? You impressed?" Valentia grins, obviously in high spirits.

You nod and give her a thumbs up.

"Not bad for a little girl, huh?"

You nod again.

Valentia is absolutely beaming when

"Oh my, you two seem quite friendly with each other." Lucina says cheerfully as she walks up,.

"P-Prince-" Valentia yelps but is cut off by Lucina.

"Shhhh, I've put up a little spell to hide my presence. I wouldn't want to get caught up in this crowd, after all!" Lucina says pleasantly. "Excellent job, the two of you!"

"Wait..." Valentia pauses as she starts to put two and two together. "The Princess told you to pick a fight with those guys?!"

You nod.

"Is that even legal?" Valentia turns back to Lucina.

"It is if nobody questions it." Lucina gives a pleasant yet also threatening smile. "You're fine with that, yes?"

"U-um of course." Valentia gulps.

"Mmmm, perhaps we should celebrate this little victory of ours?" Lucina grins. "I know a very nice establishment that doesn't water down their drinks and doesn't ask too many questions..."

"Ah, well..." Valentia hesitates and looks to you.

You shrug. Why not? Sounds fun.

"Then it's decided!" Lucina smiles brightly.

"Errr, well-" Valentia hesitates again, but can't protest with Lucina grabs her hand and drags her along.

"Don't worry, it'll be fun!" Lucina assures her.

Lucina quickly leads the both of you through a few side alleys before arriving at an innocuous looking tavern seemingly tucked away in a forgotten corner of the city. Lucina opens the door and motions for you and Valentia to go in first.

"Yo!" Niko waves with a smile, already sitting at a table, filled with refreshments.

"This doesn't exactly seem very... royal." Valentia frowns.

"It's a little place I like to go to so I can get away from all that royal protocol." Lucina chuckles. "Don't worry, this place is perfectly safe!"

"If you say so..." Valentia mumbles as she sits down, obviously feeling very out of place.

"Man, that was some pretty badass fighting!" Niko nods. "Taking out my big sis' goons like they were chumps!"

"I should've figured you were involved in this somehow." Valentia sighs. "Let me guess. She's what those jerks were looking for?"

"That's correct." Lucina confirms as she pours out some liquid into four cups. "And thanks to all your efforts, they won't be bothering us much anymore."

"Is this... alcohol?" Valentia winces as she takes a sniff.

"Royal stock." Lucina winks as she takes her own cup. "This seems like a proper occasion, doesn't it?"

As you gulp it down, you find that this "Royal Stock" was actually very good. Strong, but good. And very smooth. Definitely a step above most other liquors you've had.

Valentia coughs loudly in response to the strength of the drink. However, Lucina and Niko don't seem effected by it at all. In fact, they both giggle at Valentia showing the most discomfort.

"Don't drink much in the Church, do ya?" Niko grins.

"N-no, no we don't." Valentia's cheeks redden, though you're not sure if it's from the alcohol or genuine embarrassment. "It's something Paladins don't think of doing very often."

"Hmmmm, I seem to recall your father having a different view on that." Lucina smiles.

"Dad was always an odd one." Valentia grumbles.

And so the little chitchat continues for a while more. Mostly just small talk among the girls as they catch up. Some stories about their home lives, what they're doing now. Simple matters like that.

However, you couldn't say that you didn't enjoy yourself all the while.
