Last time we saw you, you crushed the woman who killed your brother, and then went to train with the Undefeated.

At last, you have reached 10 Mecha Pilot, 10 Mecha Brawl. Congratulations on becoming an Ace of Aces. You also unlocked the Void Fist maneuver, letting you trade Luck for Kills of damage in and out of your mech.

Heh, your gonna have fun with this next bit regardless of how it goes. But as far as the bluegill comment goes if MSPQ has taught me anything with Mekton Zeta its that its the man who makes the mech, not vice versa. Actually it would be fun to have a reverse Amuro situation in a future thread where a genius amateur who falls into a prototype gets his ass kicked by a decent pilot in a line-suit!

You expected to be doing something insane tonight, some form of training beyond training, and were just hoping you'd have enough energy left for your rendezvous with Colonel Stern tonight on the colony hull. Or that you'd still be alive. To your surprise, it...isn't anything like that. Instead, you and the Undefeated drink tea and discuss the philosophy and strategy of battle. It's remarkably civilized.

Finally, though, in the midst of discussing the most efficient way to crush a human being's windpipe with your fingertips, you ask him, “Teacher, is this really training?”

He smiles into his tea, shaking his head slightly, “There isn't much more to teach you, Roarke. You came here with a good foundation, all I did was improve on it. My original pupils were inexperienced children, you're a grown man and an expert fighter, don't look so shocked.” He sighs, “I can give you pointers, of course, and guidance as a man and a warrior, but you're ready for whatever the galaxy will throw at you. I hope I know what it's prepared for.”

“Even Joseph Muragi?” You ask, after giving him a moment, trying to catch him offguard.

It doesn't work, “So, he's the first one? I knew you'd be fighting one of my pupils sooner or later.” He doesn't sound remotely surprised.

You nod, “He asked me to meet him on the colony hull, that means we'll be in our mecha. That means we'll be fighting, probably.”

The Undefeated grins, “Muragi is the most stubborn, disobedient, troublesome student I've ever had. He never matched Belegor for sheer talent...but then, he never tried to. He adopted my teachings to his own way of fighting, and decided for himself when he was done learning. I sometimes believe his decision to join the UJCIDF was made specifically because I left it.”

“Jupiter needed heroes.” You remark, trying to square the image of Colonel Stern as a hotheaded rookie with the patient, disciplined old man you know.

“Everywhere always needs heroes. That's how the species evolves. I don't think he did it to spite me, but out of duty, the only way he knew to thank me. For what, I don't know, I turned those boys into weapons and let them loose on the galaxy.” He grumbles.

“If you hadn't, the War might have turned out differently.” You point out, “Also, I wouldn't have been born.”

“Oh. Well then, you're welcome for your life.” Your teacher sounds sarcastic, but also as if he's been touched just a little bit by your statement, glancing at the chronometer on the wall, “Shouldn't you get going if you want to make that meeting of yours?”

You glance at the time, and start swearing.

“Run, Roarke! Don't get soft now! Exercise those legs!” The old man cackles as you dash out of the hut and down the hill.

You make it in record time, grab Karen's backside and give her a kiss, ignoring Oda's bosun kyaa-ing and asking impertinent questions about where you're going in such haste, prep the Knuckle Kaiser, and launch from the colony. It's not hard to find the Colonel's signal, he's waiting midway along the hull on the same side you launched from.

Even from a distance, you can see that he's in a Bluegill. It's one you'd know anywhere, too...or at least, that's how it looks at first. A dusty blue one, just like in the simgames, although one leg has been repainted white. Probably on the side where he has his artificial leg, you're guessing. As you get closer, you see it's been updated a little. Both arms and legs contain a whole array of thrusters and verniers. It's waiting patiently, both hands propped on a cane...that's an odd choice for a weapon, but it fits. The forearms, spine, and calves of the mech also have strange serrations that you can determine no actual function for besides decoration, which strikes you as unlikely.

The Knuckle Kaiser looms over it like a titan as you land on the hull. On impulse, you scan the cane...and even in the cold of space, you feel yourself starting to sweat.

First of all, that cane is two pieces. The stalk itself is an elongated beam emitter, while the C-shaped head of the cane is also an emitter, a shield type. That isn't what concerns you. The problem is...your scanner must be broken.

It absolutely, positively, has to be broken.

That weapon is radiating more energy than an entire mech has, and not just any mech, but a SOUL mech. It's almost incomprehensible, and your machine's AI systems struggle to put together a schematic to express what it's capable of. Yes, this is unquestionably a Bluegill, an updated Bluegill, but still a Bluegill...and yet, it's the fastest humanoid mech you've ever seen, and it's holding a weapon that outmatches even the ones you saw the Oliver wielding.

“Good afternoon, Roarke. Last time, I believe you won our game. Shall we continue? I'm afraid I left my checkers set behind.” The Colonel remarks, sounding a little sad. “Do you understand why we have to do this?”

>>
>>1773477
I would recommend looking at his weight. He only takes a -1.. and that beam saber is enough to bring his attack roles to 20. That hyper means each +1 above our roll is an extra hit. Like a horrible beam missile barrage.
>>1773460
Prep for whats to come? You did fight Duke Eustace to a standstill, and he was number 2.
>>
I actually need to figure out how that Hero Saber interacts with scoring mega-crits. I know how MISSILES do it, but I don't know if it applies the same way with a melee weapon, because if they're all megacrits the Fencer could conceivably just cut starships into pieces without needing to fuck around with going for a reactor explosion.
>>
>>1773496

And now you know how he beat the Gorgons' space pirate fleet. Without the Hero weapon and shield, the Bluegill Fencer has a CP cost of 118, well within normal parameters for the time period especially if it hadn't been given the extra verniers that account for its Weight Efficiency yet (putting it at a cool 100 CP, easily within Ace Custom range). Yes, it would have had a mass katana, specifically the extremely battered, warped, and bent one on the wall of his office on board the Cincinnatus, but that costs...let's see.

To maintain speed at that weight, it would have to be 6K (for 3 tons), perhaps it was a bit slower and weighed 29.5 tons, meaning it had a 8K, 4-ton sword, likely Quick and AP, like a toned-down version of the Lightning's Kusanagi. That costs a few dozen CP, at best. He was, in all likelihood, piloting a sub-140-CP mech at the time.
>>
>>1773499
Taking a look, you may be right. you get a +8 to hit and crew tend to never be above 16. That is a 12 to hit and he's quick. He might not cut Fairchild's ship to ribbons, but that thing could certainly shred a transport in moments.
>>
>>1773530
Stern is terrifying
>>
>>1773533

That means if he rolls even with them or even a little below he easily megacrits.
>>
>>1773537
The pilot is the single most valuable part to a mech. When you get to that level of skill, in a machine that compliments it, you can't be stopped.Bugger even has 14 MA.

Win or lose I'm gonna love this thread, the hotblooded contest of arms, the proving of successive generations, all in a timeless duel. Also I wonder if stern and the pops ever dueled like this, probably. Whatever else this duel is to Stern it'll also be a huge nostalgia trip as well! Wow I'm romanticizing this before this even starts, where did my mild cynicism go?!
>>
>>1773548
That is correct. He is, more likely than not, going to score a megacrit on the target. Hell, on a even roll, he gets 3. If we were to go with the highest and lowest rolls? 12.

holy mother of fuckballs hes gonna destroy us if he hits, god damn his mech is the definition of Critzilla.
>>
>>1773568
Better turn on the biocore we have to pull out all the stops for this one.
>>
>>1773609
Gets even dumber if you look at him versus a D rank Crew. 18 hits in one swing. That is 216 damage.
>>1773601
Less critzilla and more Glass Chainsaw. Even without crits, he just chews things up. Mind you, if he gets hit, he loses a limb or torso. It just takes one punch to get through.. though out of good sport, I saw just taking his arm with the sword.
>>
>>1773627
That'll probably be enough since he would know that in a real fight we would have cored his cockpit.
>>
>>1773627
the problem with your line of reasoning is that while his mech is made of paper, hes fast as almighty shit and he will destroy anything he hits, it doesn't matter if your made of glass if shits impossible to touch you.
bluegill joe owns a god damn monster of a mech.
>>
>>1773640
Yup. Sides, we need to be at peak strength for what is to come. Same goes for Joe.
>>1773658
Not necessarily. It's got a few other issues the Nightmare A had. It can still be struck from behind. It's mobility is fast, but it lacks range. It's shield IS strong, but can be taken down by a grand cracker grenade or strong blast. That shield also can't block from behind.
There are ways to face it, but we are going to have to play smart.

“Time to pass the torch?” Your drones detach from your mech's shoulders and hover around you like the petals of an ebony flower, slowly drifting back and forth.

He smiles over vidcomm, shaking his head slowly, “Perhaps. The truth is, you've shown up Jupiter's finest time and time again. It's bad for morale, and that's why I was given permission to do this. It isn't why I'm here, though. I'm here because we should settle this as men, to see which of us is really better. In the battles to come, someone is going to have to step forward as the premiere ace of the Solar System and take the fight to Avalon. Don't judge the Paladins by your Countess, I've fought the Golden Duke, and he's...the strongest opponent I've ever faced since abandoning my old name. Worse still, he's decisively the second-strongest of the Paladins, I gather their leader remains on Lorien, the capital planet of the Principality of Avalon, and pilots the mech Roland. His rival is a man who I could never beat when we were children. As for the Duchess who Fairchild captured...and lost...I believe she was the spiritual heart of the team, a mystic, but I wouldn't take her skill lightly either. Anyway, I've turned my recorder off for this fight, I...and certain others...just want to know where you and I stand relative to each other.”

“The Duchess was lost?” You question blankly.

He nods solemnly, “A member of the pirate fleet Five Man Band infiltrated their vessel, slaughted his way to the brig, released her, slaughtered his way to her mech, and then left. He made no secret of his identity, I believe he wanted us to know. The...blood autograph on the mechbay wall spoke volumes.” His voice is thick with distaste, “Even without speaking of his monstrous behavior and penchant for inflicting pointless death, as a swordsman he disgusts me. He has fine technique, but he relies heavily on the strength of his unnaturally augmented body, taking risks and hits he doesn't need to just to enjoy his victims' despair and slaying messily rather than fighting efficiently. I do not think it requires argument to say that whichever of us finds him first gets the privilege of ending his existence.”

“Agreed.” You look at his mech again, and sigh, feeling slightly gloomy. “I guess this is why they say you should never meet your heroes.”

“I have no intention of killing you, and I hope it's mutual.” He remarks.

“I'm surprised General Fairchild hasn't ordered you to.” You respond, saying plainly what's been on your mind.

He smiles, a quiet, content smile, “General Fairchild is no longer in any position to give those orders, whether or not she is aware of it yet. My permit to duel you comes from higher up the chain of command. From the very top, you might say. Whether or not there is sufficient evidence to imprison her for the crimes many believe she has committed, her personal failings as a commanding officer have finally caught up with her.” He twists the cane, and draws it apart, beam emitters springing to life. The shimmering, brilliantly white blade of his beamsaber is considerably longer than his mech is tall, and about as wide, while the shield is a circular disc that glows like the full moon does in Ancient Terran stories. “I never did thank you for Suleiman 1.”

“I never did understand how she managed to keep you on California Station while that was going on.” You reply.

He smiles bitterly, “Naomi Heim. I was aware of her identity, and the General used her injuries as an excuse to keep me restrained. Considering her high priority as an asset, none of the senate batted an eye at it. They only saw a weapon to be used, not the girl I had come to accept as one of my pilots.”

You nod, not relishing what's about to happen as much as you expected. “There's just one other thing I was wondering. Well, two, really.”

“Go ahead and ask, we have all night.” The Colonel replies placidly.

You point at the sword, “What in tartarus is that?” You try not to sound petulant.

He laughs, “A gaudy, ugly monstrosity that has nonetheless managed to win my affection somewhat. This weapon is a gift from the Terrans. We...can't replicate it ourselves, although Bucephalus and Bahamutcorp have tried their utmost. To achieve this kind of power output with our OWN technology would require an entire mech just to serve as its power plant. Perhaps it was as a show of strength. Perhaps they have built something into it to betray me if I ever turn it against them. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I want to see whether you can defeat me yet. If not now, then someday. What was the other question?”

“...Isn't your SOUL mech the S-Lionfish? I've heard it mentioned a few times.”

He continues laughing, shaking his head, “S-Lionfish...it would never do for a SOUL pilot to be using a Bluegill, even this Bluegill, and it would make my identity immediately obvious. The S-Lionfish is not a mech itself, it is a suit of armor for my Bluegill Custom. It obscures its form, makes it roughly as large as the S-Betta, and provides me with additional options for fighting masses of enemies. I'm still trying to decide whether or not to call it for facing you.”

You shrug, “Don't hold back on my account, go all-out.”

He shakes his head, “That's not my motivation. It slows down the Fencer slightly. Not much, but enough.” He smiles, “Alright, I think I am being a little reckless, hoping to win this in a single blow. And selfish. After all, to engage in this fight as Joseph Muragi, piloting my Bluegill, is a sensation I had missed more than I dreamed. No, to do this at my best, I will need the Lionfish.”

He clears his throat, and taps in a channel on his communicator, “Lionfish Server, initiate startup.”

“Lionfish Server responding. Request verification?” His own voice repeats over the line.

“Justice and Peace.” He says solemnly.

“Vocal patterns authenticated, launching parts.” The server replies. You see the Cincinnatus cresting the edge of the colony, and a sudden flash of light. You shield your eyes, and wonder if it just fired a missile.

The approaching objects move about as fast as a missile, a misshapen framework of bone-white metal that wraps around the Bluegill from behind, fastening tight to its spine.

“Lionfish system, online.” Muragi intones, “Spines, activate!”

Dozens, no, hundreds of metal ribs slam shut around the Bluegill's torso and limbs, giving them extra length and thick, overlapping, ornate armor. An ornamental, Greek-style crest stands up above the Bluegill's otherwise unaltered head, giving you a hint where Pierre got the idea for where Pierre got his Swordtail's aesthetic from. Tiny, multijointed limbs unfold from the limbs and spine of the mech, needle-thin beam sabers springing to life to surround it with a forest of quills.

LIONFISH COMMAND ARMOR

Sidenote: Yes, these weapons have weight, and there is an adjusted weight at the end of this section. That doesn't affect MV or MA, which drops by a flat 1 due to the balance modifier imposed by the armor.

Special Weapon:
Lionfish Spines: WA +1, 6K (1K of structure), EMW (treats SP as 4 less than usual), Attack Factor 5 (automatically attacks up to 5 separate adjacent enemies each turn, will not attack an individual enemy more than once without using up Actions), 30 CP, 3 Spaces, 0.5 Tons

[Medium Weight Head] +2 Spaces, +1 (Beta) Armor SP (5 total), Target Analyzer (5 CP, 1 Space), 1 Thruster, 7.5 CP, 0 B.Mod
[Heavy Striker Torso] +10 Spaces (+7 with Balance Vernier), +5 (Beta) Armor SP (9 total), Lionfish Spines x2 (3 spaces for one, 2 for the other with 0.5 CP of Space Efficiency), 2 Thrusters, 0.2 Balance Vernier. 77 CP, 0.2 B.Mod.
[x4 Heavy Striker Limb] +6 Spaces, +3 (Beta) Armor SP (7 total), Lionfish Spines x 1 (3 spaces), 3 Thrusters. 40.5 CP, 0.2 B.Mod.

Total Speed Increase: 15 Thrusters spread amongst the various servos for a total of 30 and a speed of 1350 meters per turn with Balance Modifier taken into account.

Weight Modifier: Used only for grapple-related purposes, does not affect MV. 31.5 Tons pre-Weight Efficiency.

MV Modifier: -1, total of -2 with existing stats.

Total Cost: 246.5 CP
>>
>>1774037
Do each of those 6 spines attack the thing that comes into range?
>>
>>1774037
27. That thing has a MA of 27 and a attack factor of 5. Bloody hell.
>>
>>1774053

Yes. Each can attack up to five opponents per turn, BUT can't attack a single opponent more than once each. That means, in single combat, he's limited to six free attacks from the Lionfish Spines plus his sword attacks, at the cost of a bit of maneuverability, which is why he hesitated to use it since he trusts his own swordplay. On the other hand, you are his ally and knowing what the Lionfish can do is good if you're ever teaming up to fight Avalonian forces.

You know what the great thing was about Tallgeese? It's whole shtick, at least originally, was being (a) just a big Leo and (b) being SO FAST PILOTS DIED USING IT.

The last plates close around the Bluegill's head, encasing it in a proud white helm, and the S-Lionfish salutes you with its sword, a halo of additional thrusters lighting up. You can only imagine the ominous rumble. A vivid purple gleam shines from the eyeslit on the helm, and Colonel Stern's voice roars like a lion, “JUSTICE AND PEACE, GLORY TO JOVE!”

You're aware that you're grinning like a madman, and abruptly you realize why. You've never been so excited for a fight in your whole life. Sure, there have been fights you really, really wanted, but this is against Him. Your childhood hero. A man who intimidated you with his presence even before you knew who he was. The arch-pilot of SOUL as SOUL was meant to be, the SOUL Caesar, Samantha, and Pierre believed in. The man even Clemmy is afraid of...and he's facing you as an equal.

Miles is calling your PC. You ignore her. You ignore her without question. Your vision seems to blur a little, then sharpen abruptly, your senses feeling more awake, more alive. You can feel every part of the Knuckle Kaiser moving, the drones stiffening into stiff-fingered spears and starting to rotate like four massive rotary drills. Power surges through your being. Not like before, where you almost felt drugged. It's less intense, less powerful...but it's THERE.

Brilliant blue-green witchfire from your thrusters, and a sky-blanketing comet of purple light from his, illuminate the void as you charge towards each other.

You're not sure if it's you or the mandrake who turns on the music.

'Carry on my wayward son. There'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more.' The instruments of Kansas kick in as you clash.

About that. You got one hit with your drone, it isn't enough to finish his torso off because it's not linked the way your fists are. Going for the arm is honestly the right choice.

Besides, both of you are good enough to eject from a destroyed torso. Of course he wasn't going to give up with just his sword-arm gone.

The S-Lionfish is so fast that it seems as if you've barely crossed any distance at all before it's right in front of you, plasma flaring up as it reverses its thrusters to avoid ramming right into your larger, bulkier mech just as the instrumentals end.

'Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh~' Sighs Kansas.

You swing hard with a right cross, but he interposes his shield, and with a flick of his leg thrusters swivels his mech just enough to catch your low left uppercut with his shield as well. You jab twice, but he calmly steps back and sideways away from each one, weathering the storm of blows.

'Once I rose above the noise and confusion...'

You've never felt this before, the sensation of facing someone so strong. Yes, this battle might be over at any moment, when one of you breaches the other's armor, but the seconds feel like a lifetime. That sword, that sword is death in his hand. You can't let it near you, you have to end this now before he gets the chance to make a clean strike and cut your mech in half.

'Just to get a glimpse behind this illusion...'

Two of your drones, following your shouted commands, slam into the colony hull behind him like meteors but he darts forward right out of their reach. The others grab at him, and he spins to avoid them, the fingers closing just inches from the flawless, white armor of the S-Lionfish. He smacks one aside with his shield, raising his sword high overhead to split the Knuckle Kaiser in two...and your last drone turns in midair, clenching into a fist and rocketing towards him from behind, hitting his right shoulder so hard the arm shatters, armor and all, the blade flying away.

'I was soaring ever higher...'

You're panting for breath, shocked at how fast your heart is pounding, but you're riding the adrenaline rush, “Got you!” You crow.

“Very good, but I'm not finished yet!” The spines whirl into motion, and the S-Lionfish charges, shield held in front of itself. Its lesser spines may not be AS deadly as its sword, but it has a lot of them!

You were expecting him to go for his sword, drop his shield, and try to hit you...but he's clearly aware that with your huge, advanced shields, he would only get a single strike. It's not often you face someone else who can scan their targets like you can.

>[Feed me 1d10+17s!]

I'm just gonna say, Bluegill Joe just dodged all but one hits from a Light Heavy-tier Mech with a biocore and fist-funnels with nothing more than a souped-up Bluegill with a bigger engine and a beamsword and shield. The Cajones on Joe can plug a black hole.

'...But I flew too high.' Kansas warns you, as all of the S-Lionfish's spines stand on end.

It spins, a swift, practiced motion, slashing at dozens of angles at once...and the drone that took the Lionfish's arm floats away in pieces. His movements are hard to read, he's not so much hitting as putting his limbs and torso in close proximity so the spines can take his foes apart.

'Though my eyes could see...' A needle-like purple plasma blade skewers one of your drones through the sensor on its palm, two others piercing through it and causing it to detonate.

'...I still was a blind man.' A beam from his shield-arm's shoulder whips through another drone, slicing back and forth to cut it into chunks.

'Though my mind could think...' He stomps on one of the drones that had landed behind him, the sub-arms on his mech's calf hacking it down.

'I still was a mad man.' He casually drives an elbow and the blades on that arm into the last drone, surrounded by explosions. Simultaneously, blades on his mech's torso reach out for your main body.

Your shield intercepts the first between heartbeats. You stumble to the side away from the second stab of a narrow plasma needle. Your shields slam down in front of you, huddling behind them like a boxer behind his guard as dazzling flashes of purple light fill your vision, a flurry of blows that scar your shields (11 SP remaining on left shield, 10 SP remaining on right shield), but only one reaches through to slash the armor of your mech's chest (-1 SP, 7 remaining, -2K, 10 remaining).

'I hear the voices when I'm dreaming...' You've never been this close to losing. Not against Loriette, not against anyone. Even without his sword, he can cut you down with just his side-weapons. You can't retreat, the S-Lionfish is more maneuverable and much, much faster...and so you do the only thing you can do.

'I can hear them saaaaay!'

You advance, pushing forward and around the side that's missing an arm, dropping into a low horse stance and slamming your right elbow into the S-Lionfish's spine with the full force of Karen's sturdy pirate-made hydraulics. The smaller mech's feet lift off the hull, and your mech's blank faceplate swivels towards it.

'CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON!'

Sparks fly up from the S-Lionfish's damaged thrusters and crushed needles as you turn on a dime and hammer your fists into its back, pounding its armor to scrap despite the cosmetic damage incurred by its plasma needles.

'THERE'LL BE PEACE WHEN YOU ARE DONE!'

Your knuckle-drills whir, sending white-hot spirals of metal corkscrewing through the air like confetti.

'LAY YOUR WEARY HEAD TO REST!' You whoop as the S-Lionfish goes dead, its back broken. It starts to slump, and you grab it.

'DON'T YOU CRY NO MORE!' You sing along, reaching into the mess of circuitry and ripping out the cockpit.

Colonel Stern is laughing over the comms, and you join in. "Alex would be proud of you, son. I know that, somewhere, he's smiling."

also i wouldn't put it past fairchild to highjack the damn thing and come after us with it after finding out all the shit thats coming down on her head right now, considering at this point in the timeline, she just lost her damn hitman dog and her hitdogs clone is way pissed at her for being supposedly backstabbing, roarke survived that mess, proceeded to beatdown bluegill joe, and will probably really soon get Caesers info to finally put down the she bitch.

He sighs, “Well...I don't think I could de-limb your mech completely with just my own sword and my remaining energy, so it's my loss. You win, Roarke.”

You laugh at the suggestion while taking it completely seriously, “I guess I do.”

“By the way, I noticed how fluidly your mech moved in combat. I've only seen that particular kind of responsiveness, that...liveliness...once before. It was when I was facing the Duke above the atmosphere of Mars. Did you take more than just virtue from your captive Countess?” He ribs you.

“I took what she gave me, and gave her what she deserved.” You reply without answering, understanding that he's referring to your mech's bio-frame. You glance towards his battleship in the distance, and the three squads of mecha launching from it, “So, what happens now?”

“Hold on.” He fiddles with his communications equipment, “...Show some respect and lower those weapons, the Pirate King and I had a friendly duel. The future of the System is in good hands.” He flips that channel back off, and smiles, “...and I feel as if, at last, I can rest a little. Things won't get easier after this. The Solar System League will be relying on you, the monster of the belt, now that you've proven your mettle over and over again. Not just against Avalon, but in the battles to come after that. Perhaps you'll even be the one to defeat Belegor, and become the greatest of Teacher's students. I could never follow in his footsteps, but maybe you are the one to truly comprehend the void style of martial arts.”

>[What say?]

We are pretty sturdy, honestly. 3 hits with those rave lasers to take down a drone, and our torso is buff as well. If we gamma armor ourselves, 8 kill attacks that aren't AP or EMW won't even scratch us. It would also make us blast and incendiary proof.

It would have been one hell of a fight and he probably would have lost but it would have been pretty bad for both of us.

“It's a bit ironic, a pirate being a hero.” You remark.

“You haven't turned it down.” He points out.

You shrug, “I live here, this is where I keep my loot. I have to protect our home for the sake of my family and my crew.”

“Nation, son, you're a king now.” He reminds you.

“Them too.” You sigh, “...Do you think I'll do a good job?” It's not what you were planning to say, but he's Joe, you figure you would get a better answer from him than most people, and unlike the Undefeated he won't just whack you on the head and tell you to train harder. There's no real exercise for kinging.

“I think you'll try to.” As expected, his answer is more honest than comforting, “That should matter at least a little. You'll have people who are there to help you. You'll have your share of enemies, too, but you're more used to that than most people, and you haven't let it tarnish your soul yet. Trust Samantha, she's got a good heart and she loves you more than anything.” He gives you a thumbs-up, “Remember, fight for justice, so that we can enjoy peace.”

“I'M COMING TO GET YOU ROARKEY~ I SAW EVERYTHING, AND I'M NOT. GOING. TO. WAIT. YOU CAN'T STOP ME FROM PEELING YOU OUT OF THERE WITHOUT YOUR CUTE LITTLE HANDY DRONES~ WAHAHAHAHA~” You see a black and gold flash moving along the colony hull.

Your blood runs cold. You spot the nearest port you can enter the colony through and wager you can just about make it there before Clemmy catches you with her new sword drones. You grab the pieces of your drones, bundling them beneath your shields, and quickly excuse yourself before fleeing indecorously.

“YESSSSSSS! OH YES! RUN! I L O V E CHASING YOU!” Clemmy howls into the comms, her voice radiant with glee. You adore her but you have to have SOME dignity as King of Phaeton.

...You make it to a park before she catches up. It's not as private as you would have liked, but it's semi-secluded, and anyone within earshot likely flees from her wild laughter and jubilant howls as the two of you tumble together into some foliage, clothes rapidly becoming lost in the throes of passion. Miles tries to call you again and you ignore her even more.

Some hours later, she's nuzzled up against you, naked, the grass tickling your bare skin, running her fingers over your bare chest with an amorous smile and nuzzling your neck just below your ear, murmuring your name. “Oh Roarke...” She sighs, eyelashes fluttering, “I'd think I was dreaming if I hadn't pinched myself. We're really getting married, aren't we? And...and you're not going to be running from SOUL anymore, are you?” You're surprised by how vulnerable her smile is, “Thank goodness, I'm just so happy, we got our happy ending after all.”

You nod, not completely trusting yourself to speak. “Clemmy...” You throw your arms around her and hug her tight, “You're so adorable. I can't get enough of you.”

“T-that's what I was going to say!” She protests, “Don't steal my words! Pay for them! With your mouth!” She assertively crawls up your body, lips turned up towards you.

You give her the kisses she wants, before asking what's on your mind, “...What were you doing out on the hull, anyway?”

She looks uncomfortable, and shrugs, “I heard something about another duel, and SOUL, and...I assumed something that turned out to be wrong, but instead I...I got to see something amazing. I can't believe you really beat him! It was so close!” She gushes, eyes shining with enthusiasm.

“What did you assume?” You ask, more to listen to her sweet, cheerful voice than out of any real worries, idly playing with her hair.

She glances away, “Just that you were dueling someone else. Not the Colonel. Just...” She sighs, “Sorry, I didn't mean to hide it from you. I thought you and Fairy were fighting. If you were, I had to be there. In case you got hurt. In case I had to stop her from hurting you. In case you did something that could get you in trouble later. Really, I had to be there no matter what, I know you both too well to stay away.” She lays her head on your chest, and kisses it, “I'd kill everyone to save you.” Suddenly, she perks up, “Oh no, I forgot!”

You blink at her, discomfited at the interruption in the snuggles, “Forgot what?”

She grabs your sunglasses out of the weeds, puts them back on your face, and kisses you again, “Miles was looking for you! She said it was really, really urgent! She, uh, said you should get ready because it might be a bit of a shock so...it could be bad news!”

You blink at her from behind your shades, pondering this. A beer shortage? Some problem with her cannabis garden? Maybe if Miles is being especially serious it's some actual logistical issue where she already has a solution but needs your approval so that she's not at fault if she messes things up. That new title might actually be giving your former First Mate some stress, for once. “I suppose I should go check.” You can't help sounding regretful.

“...You really are the cutest. I love you more every day.” Clemmy sighs, cupping your cheeks in her hands and touching tip of her nose to yours, “Go do your job, I won't be going anywhere. Ever.” She looks gleeful, “Tomorrow I become your wife~”

“Tomorrow I become your husband.” You steal another kiss and the two of you help each other get dressed, having a hard time NOT falling back into the plants and out of your clothes in the process.

Eventually, though, you manage.

You walk along the lake, still feeling disheveled, and decide to wash off. A quick swim should do the trick. After all, you're alone out here, far from the regular beaches, and with a rain cycle oncoming within an hour, judging by the warnings you heard from the various PA system outlets. You strip out of your clothes, hide them behind a boulder, and swim out into the warm, grey water. This part of the lake isn't really tourist beach, there are rocks along the shore, and a tall stand of bamboo that stretches out around a little cove, and in the spirit of exploration you swim out around its edge. The artificial light glimmers off the water, and in the shallows you see...

...A goddess.

Her hair is long and gold, the water taking it out of its usual shape and plastering it to her back, reminding you of ancient legends of water nymphs and selkies, and her form is perfectly highlighted against the greenery. Her proud breasts are bare, and water glistens on her skin, as if every curve was covered with jewels.

You stare at her, and as she becomes aware of her presence, she stares at you, startling and going to grab her sword before she recognizes you, “...Mon peasant boy?” She blushes, “Peeping is tres rude, you 'ave only to ask to see your Lori bathe.” As if determined not to look shy, she turns to face you fully, slipping into the water and swimming over to you, “I 'ave been 'oping to see you. Zhinking about you...daydreaming a bit, non?” She plays with your hair, smiling, biting her lower lip as she eases you back against a mossy boulder and climbs on top, “Mon 'usband...” She whispers, purring like a kitten as she leans down to kiss you, her bare thighs wrapping around your bare waist.

You have no choice, nor do you want a choice. All of her stress and worries, she vents in the way you've come to expect from a girl who loves swimming and dancing. She uses her legs.

It's a wonderful thing that there are so many hours in an afternoon.

“...I know I had something I needed to do today.” You remark.

“Oui. Me~” She coos, snuggling into your lap with a borderline-drunken smile of pure happiness on her face.

“No, something related to work, not fun. I had to talk to someone about something. Richard? No, Miles. I forgot she keeps calling me.” You grumble. You could stay here on the shore of the lake all day with Lori.

“Noblesse oblige.” She nods, “Is she always such a demanding vassal?”

You groan, “You don't know the half of it! I bet it's something completely mundane and pointless that didn't actually need my involvement at all and she's already dealt with but just wants my input on.” You grouse.

“Oui, oui...but still...le king is le king. Being noble is difficult, non? Yet, tres important. Fret not, mon gallant Rowarc, I can teach you all zhere is to know about having le title and rank. Go. Go and be regal, be kingly, be le ruler unparalleled...and know your Lori loves you.” She smiles, and gives you a tender-hearted kiss, “By zhe way, 'as zhe mandrake been of assistance?” There's a tinge of smugness in her sweet smile, she must have heard and been hoping for praise.

“Twice now, wonderfully so. I couldn't have won without it.” You give her grateful kisses and feed her ego, “My darling.” You nearly call her Countess, but refrain, not sure if using the title would be rubbing salt in her wounds.

“Oui, oui~” She preens, “Zhe slayer of your brother and...'oo else?” She frowns suddenly, “'old on, 'twice'? You mean you activated le mandrake le first time you used it AND le second?”

“Well, yes.” You can't keep the surprise out of your voice.

She sighs ruefully, “Mon 'usband, even most Paladins, we activate le mandrake le first time in zhe controlled setting to prevent it going bersark...and few are so lucky as to 'ave it activate often after zhat. I, myself, 'ave only once and zhat was le first time.” She sighs, “Your opponent was?”

“My childhood hero, Jo-er, Ziemowit Stern.” You correct yourself before spreading his real name around.

“Oui? Which one is zhat?” She remarks casually, sounding curious but in the way women will ask about your day at work when they don't actually understand your job but still want to talk with and spend time with you.

“Colonel Stern, commander of the Cincinnatus, SOUL's senior ace and probably their best pilot?” You wonder if she knows ANY of the SOUL pilots.

Apparently she does, because she shoves you flat, “Do NOT tease! Le STERN!? Le CINCINNATUS!? MON ANSEIS LOST TWO DRILLS TO LE ARMORED STRIDER BEFORE LE DUC RESCUED ME!” She squeals, half-disbelieving.

You do remember her Paladin being damaged when you faced it, “He's an old friend and a good, respectable man. He knew my father when they were children. It was a gentlemanly duel.”

“...And you...won?” She stares down at you.

You nod, “Barely. I lost all of my drones, so don't feel too bad.” You give her a cheerful smile.

She harrumphs, “Bad!?” She leans down and kisses you deeply, stealing your breath and only releasing you when your heads are swimming, “Non. I feel...much less shamed at losing. Zhere are strong men, and zhen zhere is mon Rowarc. Mon beau~” She croons, then smacks her forehead, “Ah, Lori! You are being le pest! Poor Rowarc, mon beloved boy, go. I will not detain you. You 'ave your work and I 'ave to finish mon bath...I was supposed to get clean, but look, you have made me dirty again.” She smiles cheerfully.

You exchange a few more sweet words and promises and then depart, swimming back to your clothes and letting the warm day dry you out before getting dressed.

You see her watching you put your clothes on through a pair of high-tech rangeviewers shaped like antique opera glasses as you turn to ascend the hill, and realize she's been watching you change for some time. Her pink hair blows in the wind that ruffles the skirt of her long coat. Her smile is warm and rich as velvet. Your China Girl leans on the railing without shame, casually pressing her breasts forward against it to show off her cleavage and blowing you a kiss as you climb up the hill towards her.

“Darling, I've had such a trying day. We finished wedding rehearsals...and poor Fatima was SO put out at having to add poor, dear Lori even if she's been a LITTLE bit less harsh on her since those Avalonians abandoned that poor lamb here.” That poor lamb is a damned tigress, “Come talk to me, I missed you. First you go and kill that ghastly woman who probably hurt that nice girl who was in the tournament...and believe me, darling, if you hadn't killed her I would have~” She pats her the pistol at her side, drawing your attention to her hip, and holds out her hand to help you over the rocks at the top of the hill. You don't need the help, but it makes her happy, so you accept it and climb up. She feigns losing her footing and you catch her, and she takes that opportunity to kiss you, “...You're all damp and smell like the lake. It's thrillingly athletic, but it won't be comfortable walking back to the Rhinehawk with wet shoes.”

“I'll be alright, I've done worse.” You reassure her, “Duty never rests.”

“Well for a man who's getting married to ME tomorrow it can damned well take a number and wait for its turn to dance.” She mixes metaphors with casual disregard, “Let me spoil you, darling. A nice ride in a groundcar will be faster and much, much more comfortable. Don't bother protesting.” She pats your arm. The groundcar is a closed-top model, for once, in a pleasantly quaint neoclassical style with lots of plush upholstery and careful attention to luxury.

Also unusual is that Red Siren isn't driving herself, there's a short-haired, familiar woman wearing an old-fashioned chauffeur's cap in the front seat.

“Good afternoon, Admi-er, King Starwind. Sorry, King Roarke. Pirate King Roarke? I've been saying Pirate Queen Rosita all day, so...that one rolls off the tongue, anyway.” Kathrine Archibald, Red Siren's First Mate, smiles awkwardly.

“And it never becomes less enchanting to the ear!” Rosita crows, bustling you into the back and sitting beside you, “I thought Kathrine would like a turn driving, so I recruited her.” In an obvious stage whisper, she adds, “...Also I'm interrogating her about her boyfriend. He seems nice, but as her friend, I have to be sure, you know?”

Kathrine turns beet red, “Alexander is wonderful.” She sighs, “He's so...so pure, so sweet, so romantic.”

“And also, we've been talking about my plans to add some...what's the word...oh, biodiversity! Yes, to add some biodiversity to the lake!” Rosita's voice is very chipper.

Kathrine winces, “My lady, I already told you, no. I'm putting my foot down. It's a danger to the tourists and the carefully-shepherded ecosystem alike to import those.”

Rosita pouts, “But they're cute! Those little dwaguns could never hurt anybody! The one that nice pet dealer showed me could sit on my hand and was so charming with those big, shiny eyes and that happy, smiling mouth!” She turns on you, clasping your hands, “Roarke, tell her I'm right. It was just the most dear little lizard...”

“They don't stay little.” Kathrine insists, “Saltwater crocodiles can be twenty feet long!”

“That's not so big!” Rosita whines, “Besides, I want one! I'll take good care of it!”

“Mhm, until it gets loose, and then you'll cry and be miserable until we find out the old man on the mountain is taking care of it.” Kathrine shows not a jot of sympathy.

Rosita turns shimmering, pleading eyes on you, “Da~rling~” Her lower lip wobbles.

“Twenty feet is just the usual maximum in captivity, wild ones can get even bigger. Magnificent animals, Species of Earth really had some wonderful footage of them dragging fully-grown cattle into the water and devouring them.” You remark.

“See, he likes them!” She protests.

Kathrine looks over her shoulder as she maneuvers the car back into the street, “My lady, your husband-to-be is one of the few people who could probably beat one with his bare hands.”

“Only probably!?” Rosita feigns shock, then laughs, “You're probably right, I didn't know they were that big. I like a rare steak as much as the next girl, but it's a short step from live cattle to live people, and I like my lake. We'll pass on the crocodiles.”

It's pretty apparent that the Kaiser has gotten quite silly, so for anyone who's interested I worked out how much ought to cost nowadays. Between the drones and the biocore I make it out to come in at around about 970CP (the Lionfish, for anyone who doesn't want to perform basic addition, was about 700CP).

Coincidentally enough (assuming it to have the same equipment and the same camouflage systems as the Beta), the first mate's stealth Nightmare would come in very close to the Kaiser's cost, about 960CP.
>>
>>1774845
Well, depending on how you figure multipliers into drone costs for things like stealth and biocore (since they benefit from them), the Knightmare and Kaiser might be closer to 800-odd CP.
>>
Fell asleep, continue tomorrow.
>>
>>1774845
>>1774856
...Or maybe it would be closer to 930-950CP if you worked out the multipliers like so...

>>1775018
You got it! Even with the Beta's stealth systems, there were still some traces that even a feral kid could see. But leaving absolutely nothing and just popping out? It could very well have teleportation. Which is pretty horrifying since that means it has a miniaturized gating system.
>>
>>1775021
Nah, like this: https://youtu.be/IK3enxcacjM?t=77

>>1775022
It's also a system that can work in gravity and charges quickly. Although, I'm guessing it has limited range.

>>1773869
I kinda want to make one. Some kind of close-combat frame with decent ranged capabilities.
>>
>>1775028
It's probably why it had a transport take it there. But the fact it left without a transport could mean that it does have further range capabilities. Reminds me of one trick they used. A gate hidden near some asteroids to escape when Alexander and McFlintlock fought those Jovians.
>>
>>1775037
And now it occured to me that aside from repairs, the Nightmare B is pretty much self sufficient. So long as it has supplies for the pilot, the machine could just jump from place to place if it can do long ones. If it runs low, it could just raid a transport or sneak into a station and load up again.
>>
>>1775054
I bet you that it doesn't have a pilot and is actually an AI (Internal Automation with Thought Control).
>>
>>1775071
I still stand by it being that one chick who was with the Aussie. There were two secretaries for Fairchild and both her and Cabot mocked the one who failed. Then she disappeared and this bastard reappeared.
>>
>>1775215
She's not a Secretary though, she's a deep-cover agent or something. She sabotaged the Jaburo right before the Green Skulls attacked and escaped to Auditorium right during the battle. We know that someone else was piloting the the Harpy that remote controlled the First Mate's mech.
>>
>>1775235
Yeah. The one at Auditorium was Cabot. The one who sabotaged was her. She would weaken the Jaburo, escape, then let Cabot and the Greenskulls finish them off. When the Slayer A fell, Cabot disguises herself and sneaks onboard the transport. She kills someone, then takes their harpy to get back.
As for how the second did so without being close? There was that strange tower that was set up at the Aussie's place. I bet that was a long range broadcaster.

Eh, from what little we encountered of that girl she didn't give off the same completely unhinged mannerisms that the Slayer and Cabot did. I don't feel that it's her. It might be that one Engineer chick that Caesar ran into way back when since she came across as a little insane.

I still think it's an AI that's built from the mental impressions of a bunch of other pilots.
>>
>>1775265
That's the thing though. I don't think we can use the same standards for Fairchild and Cabot as we could with her. From Operation Cake Eater and the Rescue, she seemed pretty good at acting. Even her way of speech was less batshit crazy compared to Cabot.
She explained things to us about how the ASP and media. She pointed out flaws, and talked about Justice. She did so last thread as well. If Cabot was power hungry, vain and generally in it for herself, this one seems to be one who believes in her own justice. That she is good. Sure she is petty, likes to talk about how she knows things, and seems to prefer mind over Cabot's muscle, but the scariest part is she thinks she is doing the right thing.

Combat teleportation isn't so hot in MZ though. Long range teleportation is a nice utility perk, but even the most disgustingly expensive teleporter is easily outperformed by regular thrusters.
>>
>>1775297
Yes, just like how standard melee can out preform hand to hand in many situations. The thing to consider is that such a thing throws a large amount of conventional strats out the window. With the right systems it can teleport into structures, bypassing defenses designed for more traditional fights. Those bluegill screens are useless since it can pop to the otherside, and it gets around some issues for Entry and reentry while being less visible.
If it were a case of sheer power, yes the thrusters would be more valuable. But for a machine that can pop in unannounced, into some of the hardest spots, and then shoot it up? Its pretty horrifying.

What do you guys think of a rule where you set different CP values for building a Mech and its Weapons?

Or, rather, a CP/Weight limit for the weapons. I'm going off of where weapons are standardized for different mechs and thus have constant spaces and weight. So, for a standard Bluegill, regulations would state can carry something like 30 CP and 8 Tons worth of Weapons.
>>
>>1775344
Well, bigger projects require bigger construction sights and more scientists. For bluegills and our new line mechs, we can in theory get away with some fancy stuff if we keep it at 225 and below. Thats the limit for one scientist handling their construction. You might want to look into developing varients with some of the knowledge we now know.
>>
>>1775347
This is actually more for my own use.

The idea is that a military contractor would standardize a good portion of its stuff for more general use. Two Marines of differing sizes are likely to be able to carry and use their weapons with equal difficulty. An M4 carbine isn't tailored for each individual user beyond what the users themselves do to customize the weapon. Those weapons would also be sold to other organizations beyond just one military.

Incidentally, I'm making catalogs of weapons offered by various companies in my setting. It's a bit more complicated than you'd think, especially when I'm trying to make them varied. I could use a little help if you're willing to pitch weapon designs with some restrictions on them.
>>
>>1775316
>just like how standard melee can out preform hand to hand in many situations
Most situations I would say. Melee is nice in that being good at it lets you use it for both specialist hand to hand moves with niche uses and regular melee attacks, provided you have a weapon that can really make use of it (i.e. a decently strong fist). On the downside, most mecha fighting moves useless gimmicks at worst and highly situational at best, can use only physical weapons and are no use at all in using a shield (which uses Melee skill).

Anyway, like I said, the logistical perk of global teleport mode is the only substantial benefit, and even that's not the best thing: you might be able to get in with it, but you can't just hop out again, since the system has a wind up.

>>1775344
What I was thinking would be useful is hard caps on how much space efficiency a given system is allowed (to prevent you from abusing it to cram in ridiculous amounts of stuff). A cap on weight efficiency too. You'd probably implement it by tech level/overall CP budget.
>>
>>1775369
>What I was thinking would be useful is hard caps on how much space efficiency a given system is allowed (to prevent you from abusing it to cram in ridiculous amounts of stuff). A cap on weight efficiency too.

Also a good idea. I was also thinking of something where Weight Efficiency would be applied directly to a weapon in order to account for standardization practices.

In addition, I was thinking that tech that has been heavily standardized gets its production time decreased or something, depending on the Tech level of the factory.

Speaking of which, are there any rules for Tech Level interactions?
>>
>>1775347
One thing not represented in the rules but I imagine would be present in real life is the correlation between CP and maintenance costs/hours(and I frankly wouldn't want it to clog up game mechanics and have to use an excel spreadsheet for it). Having the most hotshit piece of fine destructive machinery requires extensive maintenance, and ace as well as experimental mechs are probably worse.Just look at comparitively simple modern jets (Any nation can buy a few of the "latest" last gen MIGs and beat their chest, the real test of institutional competence and having enough skilled labour is if they're able to fly more than a fifth of them 5 years later more than one sortie before they instantly go to shit/become a flying coffin). Having a machine "rust" in a barn for a few years like Cesar's ride is one thing, but active flight/combat time has huge demands the more complex the machine. I imagine the sheer industrial base and expertise concentration of the kestrals makes this less of an issue than the old style small pirate bands, but harpies were likely just as popular for being based on a simple sparrow chassies just as much as they were simply available. (Hell we only got our first bluegills because we took flint's shot up numbers he defected with, not because the UNCIDF had a surplus sale). All this has no impact (and I wouldn't want it to) on us but I find it fascinating and a good bit of world building to ponder!
>>
>>1775381
>are there any rules for Tech Level interactions?
That's something the GM is supposed to work out. The most you get is listing of the sorts of tech commonly used at each level.
>>
>>1775402
Hmm. I'd say that a Higher Tech Level factory should be able to make lower tech things Cheaper, and thereby, faster.
>>
>>1775393
Well, from what we know, dumb nanos serve as sort of high tech duct-tape and replacements for a bunch of stuff so long as you have the blueprints, but replacement parts would make sense alongside stocked ammo. Sometimes you can't wait for the nanos to set and need to get right back into the action.
>>
Here's an idea I had for rechargable ranged energy weapons:

Add the Shots and Warm-Up time options from the Energy Weapons Section and the Rechargeable modifier from the EMW section. Rule it as "once the weapon has fired that many shots it must not be used for the number of turns indicated in the selected Warm-Up time option."

Thoughts?
>>
>>1775483
Ah, crap, forgot a part. "It must not be used for the number of turns indicated in the selected Warm-Up time option in order to regain all its expended shots."
>>
>>1775393
Well, our machine is modular as fuck (we made it functional by just welding the cockpit into it), maybe the other machines and their components are similar, making it cheaper to buy a whole component instead of repairing an existing part. Just like if they were computers.
>>
>>1775875
And with stuff like the Quick Swap system, we could potentially make them even more so. Replace an Arm with a missile pod or something like that. If Bahamut is reliability and Buchapres is speed and guns, Phaeton has versatility under it's belt.
>>
>>1775948
If we go down that path we will become the weird kid that breaks down his toys and puts them back together in new forms.

"you want mech torso and tank threads? No problem!"
"you want arms that acts as legs and legs that act as arms? Can do!"
"You want a gun for a read and a rocket for legs? Yes sir!"
>>
Oh no, like an idiot I said "tomorrow" and not "Wednesday". Sorry for holding you up, guys.
>>
>>1776008
Not necessarily. With Weapon mounts and split systems, we can do away with a major problem with line mechs; Space issues. For a backpack mount on the torso, you get 8 for the price of 4. 10 for heavy striker. Rather than using large amounts of space efficiency for our big weapons, we could distribute it into specialized systems. I mean, imagine the Lightning using a lesser version of Joe's hero blade or quills? The Blitz with a even stronger weapon portfolio? The libra and Myrm with More Gun for the task at hand? We got a very nice gift from Cabot. I plan to work with it.
>>
>>1776058
That's fine. Lazy night anyways. While you're here, would a mainly recon machine with some Electronic Warfare tech make sense with how things are going? AWACS units never get the TLC they deserve for their rolls, and this Weapon mount helps in case this is non-space efficient tech.
>>
>>1775875
>>1775948
>>1776008
>>1776080
>>1775419

Excellent points, and I agree! In a main combat platform (especially if you want to update it during its service life) modularity is key. The one thing I was mainly going on about, and may or may not be an issue of any scale in this super space future, is the wear on parts and key elements of a unit (frame, electronics, etc) suffering stress and wear over a service life. Not so huge for being able to deploy them, like you've pointed out very modular and a part or too isn't the want of a nail scenario, but more looking at credit cost. Actually I suspect in a nondescript spacefuture diagnostics are so good and sophisticated the idea of parts wear not being dealt with or affect on the field performance is absurd (for a professional outfit anyway).
>>
>>1776102
Well, with stuff like the Analyzer, it would likely be the case. Likewise, there is still the dumb nanomachines. They likely wouldn't be making machines from nothing(at least not after Nano1 by the sounds of it), but wear and tear are probably a non issue compared to the costs such maintenance would be. So you get the blueprint from your Target Analyzer machine, find where the damaged parts are, and fix them up with a bit of the old gray goo. The biggest issues I can see would be the powerplant and anything sophisticated.
>>
>>1776159
Indeed. I wonder if that holds true for ace machines, needing better materials and more sophisticated components to get better performance (so high CP to weight ratio). How cheap is the grey goo I wonder? I think with the scale of economy it likely wouldn't be as much as I would guess NANOMACHINES SON to cost. I'm loving this discussion!
>>
>>1776171
depends on how they would work.
I can imagine two scenarios if they need to repair something. On the first one, the nanomachine goes to the affected area and either disintegrates itself to close a hole or repair a gash, and in the second scenario, it carries a minuscule amount of metal, which it welds (via magic, or atomic welding) together.

The first scenario requires the nanomachines to be made out of the specific material or alloy the affected part is made of, which might affect its cost on a part basis and would require for the nano batch to be created in situ. Meanwhile, the other scenario just requires the base materials in their refined state. Either way, both scenarios have their pros and cons and their usage depends on a lot of factors.
>>
>>1776171
Well, it might depend on the Ace. Roarke is stupid simple. Armor, fists, and shields. The Biocore would be the sort of thing that cannot be repaired easily. Clemmy too would be simple, though beam sabers may be tougher. The Anubis would be a gods damned pain because it's got that gate tech which seems like something you don't want to mess up. The Hero Sword would also be hard to repair if they can't replicate it. As for grey goo costs? Probably not too expensive. It's your standard nanos, you just need enough to start replicating and then the raw material.
>>
>>1776252
It seems pretty logical that maintenance costs would scale with build costs. This would fit with physical melee weapons being the cheapest and ranged beam weapons being the most expensive. High maintenance corresponding to high cost also makes sense because ace machines are invariably crammed with features. I mean, you're only spending, what, 100 or so CP on the frame and armour tops? So the remaining two or three hundred is pure kit, all of which need to be maintained, and the more complicated (additional features) and more miniaturised (more space efficiency) it is the more trouble that is.

Take the Kaiser for example. Yes, much of it is pretty simple, but a significant chunk of its points are tied up in its main weapons, each of which is accurate, high power and armour piercing. So for maintenance fluff you've got to make sure all the thrusters propelling the arm are lined up properly and working in sync and that the beefier servos are running smoothly and that the articulation on the hands that makes them so precise is functioning properly, and that each of the drills and saws that provide the AP function is in good shape and so on. Plus there's the fact that this is a piece of masterfully crafted precision machinery that is constantly being slammed into armour plating at high speed, which has got to produce no small amount of wear and tear that needs to be kept on top of.

And that's just one fist. You'd have to do that for the other FIVE as well. Other expensive components that would tend a lot of maintenance include the active shield (which has an armature that needs to haul around a 12SP slab of armour big enough to count as Da+0 precisely enough to flawlessly intercept any attack, so that needs to be in tip top shape as well) and (as you said) the biocore, which being a cost multiplier would cost half the price of the entire rest of the mech.

You can make similar inferences for any other machine. Bottom line is: more CP means more complex, more complex means more maintenance.

>>1777551
Kind of? I mean, the game doesn't really fret too much about maintenance precisely because it's the kind of tedious logistical detail that the sort of shows Mekton drew from never really bothered with because it would just bog things down. So they'd either have some Scotty type person like Karen who are just handwaved to keep things running or come up with new upgrades because they're assumed to be that good, or you get some nameless techs who are more or less able to keep on top of things unless the plot calls for a sudden part shortage or for a mech to be out of action for an episode or something.

For instance, I don't really recall who on the White Base was handling that, but it couldn't have been easy to maintain three cutting edge mobile suits through the kind of constant combat they were undergoing, even if you allow for them managing to keep a hold of some V-project spare parts to do it with.
>>

For the federation at that point in time? Basically ahaha. I think the real challenge in regards to all the prototypes is that they were one of prototypes at that point. No cannibalizing GM and GM2 parts when shit got shot up ala MS 08.
>>
>>1779278
Not only that, but the tech for their forces was pretty new. When you are use to tanks and planes, figuring out how a bipedal machine does it's job is a pretty big challenge. Though, as seen in the tourney, Karen is a genius when it comes to this sort of stuff, figuring out how even new tech works in days.
Really, the fact they used the black box data from all three machines for the GMs says a lot about their knowledge of the machines they made.

“Smart.” You nod approvingly.

“...Loriette says they have these things called 'wyverns' on Lorien.” Red Siren remarks innocently.

“Let's not import anything we don't know about.” You hastily cut in, although wyverns weren't in Species of Earth.

She leans against you, one hand inside your jacket and against your chest as she rests her head on your shoulder, her breasts practically enveloping one of your arms, “Fine, fine. Besides, it's a bit of a trek to reach the Avalon System.” Her smile becomes mischievous, sitting up, “Ah! Look, at that burger shoppe, it's the Stone Soldiers!”

“Where?” Kathrine looks around, then spots one of them and starts waving enthusiastically.

Red Siren chuckles, “Pull over. No, not in THEIR lot, we'll get blocked in. Other side of the street. Pass me the keys and go see him. I'll drive Roarke the rest of the way home. Have fun!” She winks. Or blinks. Her heart-shaped eyepatch makes the difference moot.

Kathrine pulls over with virtually indecent haste and tosses the keys to Red Siren before jumping out and racing across the street, waving to Alexander Grant, pilot of the Libra and First Mate of the Stone Soldiers. Rosita pulls the door shut, humming happily to herself. She makes no move to get into the driver's seat.

You get out your PC, there's a message from Miles, 'Urgent news can't trust text need to talk come on Dude where are you?????'

You're about to reply when you're interrupted by Rosita's hand on your thigh.

“You know, these windows are tinted so dark that the inside is invisible even if you're standing right outside...” She remarks. “Tomorrow, I'm going to have to share you, and that's going to be an awful pain, but...right now, it's just you and me.” Her smile is more predatory than that of any crocodile.

“Well...” You glance back at your PC.

“Aw. You have duties, don't you? I understand, it's alright...there's always later. I'll drive you back, and let you do your job. You're probably so stressed, and here I am, selfishly plotting to ravish you myself.” She sighs, giving you a gentle smile and a pat on the back.

“Well, it's not...” You try to protest.

“No, no, darling. You're always much too nice and spoil me far too often.” She flips her hair over her shoulder.

“You gave me a battleship.” You point out.

“You gave me a music box. It's not the price of a gift that matters...it's how it makes the recipient feel. I always dreamed of having someone like you, someone who makes me feel this way.” She reaches up and touches your cheek, “Don't worry, I'm fine. A little jittery because tomorrow I become a bride, but...I'm no helpless butterfly. I'm perfectly calm.”

The afternoon is winding down towards evening by the time she's done with you. You feel wonderfully battered, and you're sure the groundcar has been visible rocking on its wheels for hours. You have lipstick marks all over your face, neck, and chest, and you're sure a few in other places that got incidentally swept up in the typhoon of pirate idol affection. She mumbles a completely unapologetic apology as she cleans you up with a hankerchief, laughing warmly. “Ah, let me just...” She tries to sit up, and winces, “Ooh! Ahhh...you drive, I need to rest a little.” She drops the keys into your hand.

You climb into the driver's seat, fixing your belt, and the groundcar peels out of the parking lot.

She sits up, stretching, “Darling, you fought two duels in one day, didn't you?”

You nod, “One at noon, one a few hours later. It was supposed to be tonight, but I got a message right when I arrived at my teacher's cabin, the Colonel was summoned to some kind of meeting with the other UJCIDF officers tonight and we had to push it forward.”

She smiles wryly, “Is it a sign of growing madness that I'm not remotely surprised you won?”

You shrug, “Maybe, I'm still a little shocked that I beat him.”

She laughs, “I don't know him the way Clemmy and Samantha do, darling...but I do know you, and the power of your resolve. A big heart is a powerful weapon, you know.”

“Firsthand.” You point out, “You've got one yourself, China Girl.”

She puffs out her chest proudly, “Exactly!” Then she sighs, “...I really needed that, darling. Honestly, I've been really worried, all day.”

“About the wedding?” You ask.

She shakes her head, “Only indirectly. It's that damned woman, General Fairchild. She's a rat, I've known enough of them to know the signs, and a cornered rat will always, always bite. I've been dealing with security preparations ever since I told her what I thought of her publicly, I've been driving poor Kathrine and my dear girls mad with my own paranoia...but despite all of my precautions, I worry. Thank you for giving me a little relief.” She smiles, and kisses your cheek while you drive.

“It's good for me too, I killed her lover today. I can't believe she's not planning some sort of retaliation for that.” You remark. It's true, but you pushed that worry into the back of your mind until now, “We'll just have to deal with it as it comes. Most of her allies are gone, and most of her power with it.”

“Most isn't all, I'll be a lot happier when she's dead.” She mutters, gazing out the window at the fading artificial daylight.

“Maybe rotting in one of the same prison colonies she's always threatening to send me to.” You reply. “After all, it's likely that the UJCIDF will be handling this.”

“I want her dead. As long as she's alive, she's dangerous.” Rosita points out.

If she was expecting an argument, she doesn't get one. You nod without hesitation, “Dead would be better, but you know how the galaxy works. She's a Jovian general guilty of crimes against Jupiter, and she's all set up to face them, finally. If they can get murder charges from some of the tourney pilots' testimony about the death of SOUL's original commanding General to stick...we might get to see it yet. That's far from certain, though, we just don't have anything CONCRETE enough that it's guaranteed to finish her off yet.” You sigh.

“Or she'll be obliging like Commodore Rashad and run cockpit-first at one of us in a mech.” Rosita grumbles, crossing her arms over her chest, “I hope so. I really do hope so.”

You pull to a stop in front of the docking bay, and kiss her, “So do I.”

You get out and stretch, munching on a breath mint while Rosita, now recovered, wheels the groundcar around, the two of you waving to each other as she speeds away.

She headbutts your chest, “Shenanigans.” There's not even a question mark, “That bay was for transport of foodstuffs for the wedding, and I had to find a way to haul both of them out of there with just utility mecha and Samantha in the S-Betta.” Her arms find their way around you, and she grumbles, “...You smell like pink-haired strumpet and lake water. Go shower.” She starts pushing you in that direction.

“You smell like machine oil and sweat.” You protest.

“Then I'll shower too. Did you really lose all four drones? How many were Clemmy's fault, and why does it look like she tried to cut you out of your mech?” She leans on you the whole way, unbuckling your belt when you get to the changing room. Naturally, proper showers are impossible in space, forcing humans to rely on other ways of cleaning themselves, but you're not on the Rhinehawk itself, just a bay on Auditorium, and Auditorium has gravity.

“No, that's from dueling the Colonel. Clemmy had plenty of restraint!” You promise.

She rolls her eyes, “Judging from how badly the Flowerhorn's grappling harpoons were tangled around the Kaiser, I can believe that in more ways than one.” Despite her grumbling, she smiles and kisses your cheek, “Can you wash my back?”

You've already done this three times today, but you're you, and today, you avenged your brother and beat Bluegill Joe, “Give me a hand.” You scoop Karen up and flip on the water, leaning down to kiss her as the two of you stumble into the hot shower.

She rubs you down with soap as you do the same to her, it just feels natural pushing her against the wall. These showers have a lock which you're authorized to activate, and so you don't have to worry as her squeals reverberate off the glass. Making love to her doesn't require much preamble, it's comfortable and simple and she's eager from the moment you're naked, despite how tired she clearly is.

When you're done, she leans on you, breathing raggedly and smiling, rubbing your back and making sure there aren't any more suds left on your skin, “Much better.” She mumbles happily, “Vengeance and stuff aside, it's been a rough day. We had to rehearse parts of the ceremony, and because Loriette's part of it now...” She shrugs, “Fatima and Samantha were a little...upset, but they've either gotten over it or are just pretending very, very hard that everything is fine. Be nice to them, alright? They worked hard on our wedding.”

“You don't sound very nervous.” You remark.

She laughs, “Roarke, why would I be? For years, I've been your friend, I've maintained your mecha, I've...well, I was never really good at talking to you without putting my foot in my mouth, but I tried my best. I've been around you for so long that a ring...and yes, I did as you requested with the Kaiser's metal and sensor core crystals for the rings...just makes it formal what I've been daydreaming about for a long time. I'm alright. I'm getting more than I deserve, honestly.” She smiles self-deprecatingly, “I'm under no illusions. I can't give you the kind of sweet words that the others can, I can't be what Oda calls a 'best girl', or a 'waifu', I'm awkward, I'm introverted, I'd just embarrass you if you were seen with me someplace fancy. If I tried to go toe-to-toe with your enemies I'd just be a liability...I know you were mad the one time I flew out to watch you fight even though you tried to pretend you weren't...I'm not even very pretty.”

“Wrong.” You correct her immediately.

She smiles shyly, her wet hair hanging over her eyes, kissing your collarbone as she leans into your naked body with a satisfied shudder, “...Inside or out. I knew you wouldn't let a remark like that stand, but on some level I'm still needy enough to want to hear you say it. You being with me is more than I deserve. I'm alright with Loriette, I'm alright with you becoming part of the League even though it terrifies me to change the way we've been living for the entire time we've known each other. Sometimes none of this feels real. I know what you're thinking, 'be a little more confident, Karen', this is the worst pillow talk...but I just...I just want you to know how I feel. To be honest with you even though I'm not great at being honest with anyone, even myself. So when I tell you I love you forever and that tomorrow will be the happiest day of my life...you'll know I mean it. Even if I'm not much of a heroine, you're the perfect boy for me.”

“I don't look at it that way. You're my perfect girl. I love you for who you are and what you can do. That's just who I am. You're brilliant, good with your hands...” You start.

She reaches down and grabs you, “Apparently so!”

You laugh and hug her, “I like that meat...bread...thing you cook.”

“Which I invented.” She responds proudly. You're not sure she's right on that point, though.

“You're my heroine. Nothing I've done would be possible without you.” You smile, remembering how clumsy the original Kaiser looked with its one functional fist and single shield. “You're a big part of why I've gotten this far, and I'll never forget that. I love you too, the good along with the bad. You don't need words when you've saved my life so many times, and I'm never embarrassed by you.”

“Oh, and at least I'll admit you have downsides sometimes, and keep your ego from getting too big.” She teases, then kisses you one more time, “I love you, Roarke. Tomorrow is going to be wonderful.”

Your PC chirps at you from your pile of clothes, and you groan, “Damn it, I keep forgetting about that!”

She gasps, “Oh, right! Miles was looking for you! She said it was important!”

You both hurry and get dressed, a task hampered by the repeated kisses and embraces that slow everything down, before you part ways. Her to repair your drones, you in search of Miles Longshadow.

You decide to call her...but just as you do, you spot a sad, cute face hunched over a drink and a plate of food in the Rhinehawk's bar. That's rare, Samantha doesn't usually look this depressed.

“That's an awfully long face for someone I'm marrying tomorrow.” You remark, sliding into the seat across from her.

She sighs, “Bridal blues are a lot more real than I thought they'd be. I'm not nervous or anything.” She reassures you, “I'm definitely not having second thoughts, either, it's just...my parents are coming. I didn't particularly want them to, but I suppose it's good they're here. I really wish my old squead could see this, though, and they're all missing.”

“What about Pierre?” You ask.

Her eyes widen, “Oh. Right. You didn't know about that. He's not coming. He had a speech pre-recorded, but...he said he couldn't abandon Caesar to do what he had to do on his own, I think he guessed what he was going to do to get Naomi back before anyone else did, that's always been how he is. He's a wonderful brother, and I couldn't tell him to stay. Naomi is my friend too, and Caesar deserves to be with her. I'm just worried, that's all.” She slumps down in her seat, picking at her food.

“He's a good man.” You remark, “I know he would be here if he could.”

She sighs, “I can't fault his decision at all...” She replies in a gloomy voice.

You take her fork, spear a morsel on it, and pop it into her mouth. She blushes brilliantly, “Eat.” You instruct her, “You'll need your energy.”

Her eyes sparkle, glancing around then deciding she doesn't care, opening her mouth wider, “Feed me.” Her dark lips make her pink tongue stand out more.

So you do, and before long, she's giggling and blushing, moving around the table to sit in your lap. She puts her hands on her cheeks, glancing downward, “You still treat me like a princess...”

“You are one.” You inform her yet again, “My princess, and tomorrow, you'll be my pirate queen.”

She smiles shyly, “I'll do my best to do a good job. I...made a little bit of a start today, after your first duel.” Her smile is cherubic.

“What did you do?” You ask suspiciously.

She glances around again, then puts a finger to your lips, “Call it a surprise present in case a certain obnoxious General tries anything foolish with that oversized ship of hers. Turnabout is, as they say, fair play...and I still believe in justice.” She winks.

You grin, “I'm not sure I do. After all, then I'd have to be punished for all of my crimes, including capturing you.”

“I'm more than happy to arrest you, but capturing me isn't wrong when I wanted to be captured.” She murmurs, munching daintily on a chocolate-covered after-dinner mint.

“If you try to arrest me I might just loot you again.” You squeeze your arms around her small body.

“Oh...oh yes you would. Loot me, I mean. Even pillage me. Oh gosh, I...I really...if this was in a story book, that's how it would go, but...but honestly all that I am, it's yours for the taking already.” Her eyes sparkle like diamonds as she tilts her head back to look up at you, her black-stained lips forming a sweet little smile.

“And I'm yours.” You murmur, “Are you feeling better?”

It's amazing how she manages to look simultaneously so coy and so innocent as she nods, “Well, there is one thing...”

A couple of hours later she collapses facedown into the lacy pillows heading up her bed, shivering, “Oooohhh...R-Roarke...” She looks over her shoulder at you, blushing.

You sprawl on top of her, interlacing your fingers with hers and kissing her cheek, “Now that's better...” You stroke her hair, and she makes a kittenish noise as you cuddle her from behind.

“I want to have your baby.” She whispers, then claps her hands over her mouth, “I...I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking.”

“There's nothing wrong with that. I promise, we're going to have kids together.” You reassure her. There's procedures for that now, and splicing together two people's DNA to grow offspring is too milquetoast to be covered under the laws against genetic modification. “You'll be an amazing mother.”

She smiles shyly, “A-any children we have are going to have the best father in the galaxy.” She whispers, “I'm so happy to be your bride.”

“I'm so happy to be your husband. Rest for a while, I'm sorry I had too much energy.” You tease her.

She squirms, “You massacred an evil person, then defeated a legend and made sure his student couldn't walk afterwards. I'm proud of you.” She twists around to kiss you.

You kiss her back, "...I wish I could stay."

"I'm a military girl, Roarke, I know duty can be a burden. We have the rest of our lives together, I can let you out of my embrace for a few moments." Her smile makes your heart ache with its intensity of emotion, and as she snuggles into her pillows you carefully wrap her up in blankets and give her another kiss to help her rest before you get dressed and set off.

Truthfully, you're not looking for Miles, or you would just call her.

I actually felt panic there. I can't imagine they approve of Roarke but they probably appreciate the fact that he likes their trap daughter.

First, you stop into your room to brush out your tangled orange mane...and there you find the real object of your search.

Passed out on your bed in a lump is a curvy figure in a modest Martian-style robe and scarlet hijab, surrounded by copious and detailed notes, receipts, and what looks like contact information for everything from musicians to caterers to heads of state. Since they're all on floating, holographic screens emanating from the PC she forgot to turn off, she must have just conked out on your bed. There are even designs for dresses, with little boxes reading {final draft?} and {submitted to tailors?} on each, all checked off. Fatima Ahmad has been a very busy woman. She looks so peaceful, nestled in a nest of matrimony.

You take a second and third take at an article from a womens' column reading 'best positions to ensure a healthy pregnancy', then switch her PC into sleep mode. She blinks and mutters something, pawing blindly around behind her.

“Sorry.” You whisper, “I didn't mean to wake you up. It's okay, get your sleep.” It really is fine, you've gotten laid five times today, going for a sixth would just be...

...Her pawing becomes a lot less random as the sound of your voice pinpoints your location for her. You've seen her pinpoint small animals in the underbrush just by the sound of a leaf rustling on those occasions when you've taken her with you to the Undefeated's cabin, which she's taken as a chance to go hunting and cook for you and your teacher. She grabs you by the collar of your leather jacket, pulls you down, and rolls over towards you. Her legs wrap around your waist as she sits up on top of you, hands on either side of your head, her greenish eyes sleepy yet full of growing alertness.

The first thing you notice is that the modest hijab and robe are a fabrication. The robe is open in front, and she's wearing something fantastically alluring and lacy underneath. “How rude, my wolf.” The next thing you notice is her smile. “Countering my ambush by waiting to pounce until I fell asleep. Were you hoping to play a trick on me?” She tuts, shaking her head, “I can't allow that. As your head wife, it is my solemn duty to welcome you home.” She undoes your belt, humming sweetly to you. As much as she's doing her best to be predatory, the way she touches you reminds you of how sweet and devoted she was your first time together, her first time sharing her bed with anyone. She's wonderfully attentive, and hushes you with a kiss when you try to speak, “Shhh...your day was a long one, I heard of your battles, and I know the others were likely very demanding. Just lay back, let me take care of you.”

And take care of you she does.

You're grinning like an idiot and completely relaxed from head to toe by the time she's done riding you, while she collapses against you as if melting, panting in warm puffs of breath against your skin as she clings to you, her cheeks as red as the Martian sand, “I am the luckiest of women, oh best beloved.” She coos.

“And I, the luckiest man alive.” You respond, putting your arms around her. Her hijab came off at some point, and her long hair tickles your chest as she nestles against you.

“Then let us share our luck together. I'm claiming my privileges, for once.” She nods firmly, “After how hard we've both worked...and working the...the Avalonian woman...” Her mouth twists with distaste, “...Into the ceremony was very difficult. Naturally, I managed, but now...I intend to fall asleep in your arms, and revel in how well things have turned out for us. I'm so proud of you, beloved. I heard all about your declaration of statehood and how you and Mars joined hands. I have never been so happy. You, my love, you will create peace in the Solar System, in the galaxy, and be the link that joins Mars and Jupiter as allies forever, inshallah.”

There's a crashing thud against the door, and the sound of fists pounding on it. “JOVE FUCKING DAMN IT DUDE I CALLED YOU LIKE A MILLION JOVE-DAMNED TIMES BECAUSE RICH FUCKING ASKED ME TO! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN THERE!?”

“MILES LONGSHADOW! WE ARE HAVING A ROMANTIC MOMENT! GO FIND A SHOE TO LIVE IN YOU FLEA-BITTEN IMP! DAUGHTER OF A PYGMY BABOON AND A RUNTY SKINK!” Fatima throws a slipper at the door.

“DID YOU JUST CALL ME A RUNT!? LISTEN, YOU STUCK UP HOOD-WEARING SHE-DEVIL, I DON'T KNOW HOW ALL THAT MOTHERFUCKING SAND GOT LODGED IN THERE, BUT PRY IT AND ROARKE OUT! HE'S NEEDED!” Miles roars back.

“BY ME!” Fatima hugs your face possessively into her generous bosom.

“I beg your pardon, Lady Ahmad.” Richard's rumbling, but considerably more polite, voice echoes from the other side of the door, “It's Jovian tradition, on the night before a wedding, for a man to spend time with his friends once more before his wives become his principal occupation. I mean you no disrespect, this is to honor the man we have chosen as our leader. We must drink to his past glories and future happiness.”

“Dear.” Richard remonstrates with her, “You really are being rude.”

You get dressed, nodding, and give Fatima one more kiss, “...Keep the bed warm for me.”

She smiles, “I'll rest a while. Even if you stumble home reeking of alcohol, I'll be there for you, I always will be. As well as four...ahem, five...other women who love you. Since it's you she cares for, I'll include the Avalonian because YOU can charm anyone and anything. Even if I still don't trust her, exile or not.”

You walk outside, the door shutting behind you just as Oda and Mohammed arrive, Flint, Bruce Kelly, Beckingham, and several of the older men from the tourney close behind them.

You hold high your arms, and inform them solemnly, “Tonight, we drink ourselves blind.”
