A science fantasy skirmish game. Clad yourself in powered armor, take up your gun and blade, and join the fight to reclaim our homeworld.

Previously on Freelancers:

Our strike team of new recruits assaulted a Scav base on the outskirts of a ruined city. They succeeded in their mission to retrieve the nexus generator, and evacuated without any casualties, escaping the terrifying power of Thane Ravix and leaving his band of looters in the dust. The team now returns to the company headquarters in the dropship.

The dropship passes through the clouds, and the company headquarters comes into view: a fortress from the golden age, tucked away in a small valley high in the mountains. Its ancient walls still stand -- mostly.

Commander Graves gives a few of you hearty slaps on the back as he passes by your seats. "Good work out there, recruits. Not only did you fetch that nexus generator, but you all made it back alive! And most of you in one piece! The statistics on that are -- err, well, let's just say I'll gladly toast your health at the bar later."

The hangar door opens below you, and the dropship descends.

Graves:

Take some time to relax. You've earned it. But not too much time. The Captain will have use for us again soon enough. Make sure to get your armor and weapons fixed up at the forge, and get your gear recharged at the alchemist's lab. Any of you who took a hit through the armor, get yourselves patched up in the medbay.

Everyone should hit the shooting gallery when they get a chance, too. Part of being a Freelancer is explosive growth of abilities. Sometimes literally. You'll see what I mean. In any case, you should be stronger now that you've had some experience in battle.

All right, I'm off to debrief the Captain. You lot stay out of trouble until the next time she needs you to punch out some Scavs.
>>
What surprises both me AND the sussurations that almost sound like voices I can hear all the time is that everyone made it out alive.

/And/ drinks are on Leopard? Don't mind if I do. Did. Will be doing.

Look the point is I didn't die, no one died, not even Leopard, and now I'm going to get so drunk I'm liable to forget the security-spells for my detonation charges.

Patchlog v1.1:

Mechanics: Attack rolls changed to d10s from d6s. Some bonuses to hit and defense have been increased accordingly. Weapons now crit for 1.5x base damage on rolls (not results) of 10. Shield Health replaced with Barrier Health. (Shield Weapon unaffected)

Powers: Protection Rites replaced with Shieldwall. Titan Armor reworked. Evasion renamed to Deflect. Magic Missile buffed. Medical Protocol range reduced by 1 It was always supposed to total 10, I just forgot to change it to 8 when I buffed medkit's base range to 2

Weapons: Gun range increased. Pistol replaced with Magnum. Sniper + Greatsword changed.

Gear: Grenades no longer pierce Armor. Jump Pack reworked. Ammo renamed to Runes.

Research: Flame Grenade and Grapple Hook are now available as Gear.

>Possibly other changes I forgot.

Clearly. For one, I'd have a dire lack of insides, Myrmidon. And I need my insides. It's where I store my all my incantations.

So if I puked them all out it would be a rainbow, and then shortly after we would all die. Good advice. I'll try not to.

A group of the new Freelancer veterans head to the forge to have your armor repaired and look over the weapons available.

The blacksmith is an intimidating presence, his hulking figure looming over the tallest of you. His scarlet orange-red skin appears immune to the heat and sparks from his forge as he works tirelessly at fixing the company's equipment, and fashioning new guns and armor for recruits. Some of you venture to attempt speaking with him.

"Hello?"

"......"

"This is where we get our armor repaired, right?"

"......"

"How long have you been with the company?"

"......"

"Okay, well, thanks!"

Few survivors of the elder races remain, and although their long lifespans mean some remember days before the arrival of humanity on this world, they are reluctant to share their memories.

Humanity's own stories of those days are fractured. Some say it was mere centuries ago that humans left their homeworld beyond the sky, and travelled through the dark between stars to settle here in this system. Others claim it was millenia. The Mages and Priests both claim to know the true answers, of course, but the only one who might have an opinion based on actual historical records is the Archivist. And there is some difficulty to getting a straight answer to anything out of it.

Everyone agrees on the main story, though. These worlds were not humanity's first home. After some initial difficulties, you were welcomed in peace by the elder races, and lived in harmony for many years. When the Sundering came and the dark days fell on the land, the elders bore the brunt of the assault, until finally only humans remained. Your enclaves now shelter the last remnants of this world's original inhabitants, such as the Blacksmith. And this is his fight, as much as it is yours.

A good night's sleep after a successful mission is rudely awoken by a blaring alarm. "No rest for the weary," says the Captain's voice over the PA system. "Boys, girls and bots, everyone get the hell out of bed and gear up. Crawler town's under attack, and there ain't enough of those left that we can afford to lose even one."

You and the other Freelancers hustle to the armory get loaded up. A hung-over and cranky Commander Graves oversees a fast loadout and gets everyone into the dropship pronto. Within minutes after the alarm, the team is firing off into a dim sky painted in early morning grey.

The dropship streaks through a cloud of ash, heading into the badlands. Graves speaks over the helmet comms, clearly audible despite the thundering dropship engines. "For anyone who doesn't know, crawler towns are where we get most of our ore and minerals. Self-sufficient mobile mining arcologies. They roam the badlands for new sources of titanium, glasteel, everything the blacksmith needs to fix your shit after it breaks. And those goddamn Scavs are doing what they do best -- striking when our back is turned, trying to loot as much as possible while they can.

"Captain says she expects Scav reinforcements, so your mission is to take out the bastards inside, then entrench and get ready to hold off an attack. Priority one is obviously to kill all the Scavs. But there might be civilian hostages, so keep that in mind. Rescue them if you can. Miner tribes are strange folk but they're honorable, and from a practical perpsective, we need them to run the damn thing."

The crawler town comes into view. It's even bigger than you thought. A plume of lava erupts from an open vent below.

"All right, everyone get ready. The Scavs blew a loading bay door, so that's where you're going in. The dropship will drop you on the access catwalk outside. If things get really hairy in there, I'll come in as backup. Good luck, Freelancers."

"Hmpfh. D-Delphi are you going to finish that? Y… Yes? Okay. Fine."
Phaws tapped the empty bottle disconsolately, chasing the neck around the table. Couldn't work up the proper rhythm while still in armor, but to pause for long to go through the process of prayer, polish and packaging that the process of stripping it all entailed would cut into time available to lounge. And lounging was almost as important for maintaining a true mystical aura as generally loitering about. Had to spend a lot of time lazing haphazardly in skeevy bars lately, else--- Phaws snapped back to awareness before her idle fingers chased the bottle off the scratched, worn table.

“Myrmidon, you want a refill?
Myrmidon?

Great. An empty bottle, ash-stained armor, and an open bar tap for someone not around to glare when the second refill turned into the nineteenth.

The Blacksmith was genius in the realm of metallurgy, but to replace every engine in the dropship with a screaming chorus of bound devils? Too much. Too loud. Scant hope enough of the drink spilled yesterday would congeal into a soundproof layer. Phaws slammed a gauntlet against the faceplate, clawing for the emergency dampener with little luck.

"Yes. Sure. Get it. Kill scavs. Save miners. Standard mission. Hawk 2 set. Just... got to... Satelitte, has anyone seen my scout rifle? I don't have my... Ohfortheloveof-- a magnum? Who the voidstar uses a magnum?! I-- I'm going to -- I need a minute"

Wolf Team began their breach, advancing into the main cargo bay. Delphi and Hiram splattered Scav thralls.

In the left access room. Fox team found another set of stairs up to the second level, plus two thralls. Myrmidon severed the closest one's head.

Phaws smashed open the wall next to him, opening a secondary breach underneath the left catwalk. He should be able to get inside without taking fire from the Marauders standing overhead.

Marauder II and Thrall V shot Sigurd for no damage due to his heavy armor. Thralls III and IV threw mana grenades, both detonating at point-blank range to Sigurd, who shrugged them off like a human tank -- but they did break 2 points of Armor.

Marauder III shot Hiram with his laser rifle, whose Crash Shield blocked 1 damage for a total of 2. Marauder I leapt down to the low ground and fired at him as well, but the shot was blocked by the heavy-duty crates Hiram was crouching behind.

Thrall VI shot Alyosha with his pistol for 2 damage.

Thrall IX struck Smokes with his dagger, but Smokes blocked the damage with his shield.

Thrall X shot Myrmidon in the head for critical damage! Good thing everyone wears helmets. Imagine how silly you'd have to be to expose your head in a futuristic power armor battle. Myrmidon took 2 damage thanks to his helmet.

"Why is everything spinning?" complains Phaws, readying a mana grenade as he stumbles forward, channeling the full energy of a mage's power into it. Hurling it into the midst of his foes, the magic detonation erupts, blasting through heavy-duty crates, pulverizing three Thralls, and wounding a Marauder. Hiram moves forward and finishes him off with a blast from his shotgun.

Vigil activates Shieldwall, surrounding himself, Harbinger and Myrmidon with a force barrier to protect them. Myrmidon grapples up to the high ground and kills the pesky thrall.

Smokes and Delphi contend with elusive thralls on the flanks. The priests Seeker and Alyosha ready their weapons in overwatch.

Thrall II shoots Hiram, dealing 2 damage. Marauder II tries to shoot Hiram as well, but Sigurd takes the blow instead, his armor reducing the shot to 1 damage.

Marauder III and Thrall I both shoot Delphi for a total of 5 damage.

Thrall VI fires at Aloysha, but the shot is blocked by heavy cover.

Thrall IX tries to run and get some distance, but he's gunned down by a barrage from Alyosha, his smartlink assist giving him the edge he needs to hit his reaction fire.

Enemy reinforcements appear on the northern platform. Alyosha immediately turns with the digitally-assisted reflexes of a Priest and blasts a second Thrall, filling the cargo bay with machine gun fire.

Thrall reinforcements emerge onto the west platform. Seeker misses his first shotgun blast against them, but his wired reflexes give him a second shot which strikes dead one, disintegrating a Thrall's head.

Smokes killed Thrall VI with his spear! Alyosha moved north, intending to shoot point-blank, but Smokes killed it already. So he contented himself with shooting at a Thrall on the platform to the north, killing it.

Vigil opened the door into the western supply room and fired at the Marauder inside, but missed. Myrmidon sprinted past and slashed with her blade, dealing a critical hit and slaying the Marauder in a single blow!

Sigurd charged north and swung his hammer at Thrall 2, but mistimed his blow and struck the ground.

Hiram shot Thrall 2 and killed it.

Seeker and Alyosha argued over who should heal whom, but eventually sent their medical drones forth to heal Hiram and Delphi.

Phaws unleashed a fiery explosion on the northeast group of Scavs, roasting the Thralls and setting the Marauder on fire.

Delphi retreated. Sigurd wasn't in range for her protective rite.

Harbinger used his jump pack to boost himself forward and took cover by the door. Inside was the Thrall, along with two miner hostages, tied up on the ground. Harbinger fired his magnum, but the shots went wide. Myrmidon charged past him into the room and swung her sword, but the Thrall dodged! (Rolled 2)

Sigurd charged up the western stairs and slammed his hammer into the thrall up there, knocking him off the catwalk and to the ground below.

Smokes didn't have to charge up the stairs, since his long spear reached all the way up for him. He plunged the speartip into the throat of the Marauder above him.

Hiram fired his shotgun at the Marauder on the catwalk above him and blasted his head into chunks, the body toppling backwards.

Delphi's medical drone healed Alyosha the Priest, who staggered back to his feet. The experience fazed him little, experienced thanatonaut that he was, as many Priests are.

Phaws sank to the ground against the wall, complaining about his hangover and the blood on his helmet. Mages can be overly sensitive to these things after displays of power like the ones he's unleashed here. Harbinger bewailed his ill luck and began to meditate, searching for the true will of the satellites.

Thrall II runs up the stairs, then throws a mana grenade at Sigurd. The explosion doesn't hurt him, only his armor -- but it also blasts the catwalk under his feet to pieces. He falls to the ground, taking 1 falling damage.

Marauders II and IV both fire their laser rifles at Delphi, but miss!

Thrall XIV ducks the attacks from Myrmidon and Harbinger. He pulls out his dagger and plunges it into the throat of the nearby civilian, cackling. Another notch in the belt of these butchers, a reminder that they truly have no regard for human life. The Thrall grabs the other civilian to use as a human shield, taunting in his harsh, otherworldly tongue. The miner is fully clad in hazmat and respiratory gear, but Myrmidon knows that underneath it all is a terrified human desperate for help.

The reinforcement Freelancers arrive in flaming spheres, launched at incredible velocities from Echo Base far away. Their shock pods crack open on impact and disgorge their contents, spilling the reserve fighters onto the platform outside the launch bay. Four Hunters shake off the landing and move to stand alongside each other, their cloaks and scarves blow dramatically in the wind. It's a scene that achieves the level of coolness that only Hunters can aspire to, and the other Orders try to pretend they don't envy. Runner, Tiger 1. Rust, Tiger 2. Leopard, Tiger 3. Lynx, Tiger 4. They brandish their weapons, ready for battle.

Smokes uses his grapple to reach the 2nd floor and smash through the window above him. He tumbles into the room and up to his feet, then slays a nearby Thrall with a casual flick of his spear. He hears thumps and muffled screams from the door ahead of him, and knows there's at least one hostage in there.

Alyosha raises his sights to the northern catwalk and fires his sniper rifle, taking a Marauder's head off in one clean shot.

Lynx fades away from sight, only a shimmer and shadow revealing the Hunter's presence as they move into cover and prepare for the attack. Hawk and Tiger squads do the same, preparing for the inevitable assault. (Except for one man who, for some reason, stands directly in the path of the oncoming troops.)

Myrmidon cuts down the cowardly Thrall, rescuing the second civilian. She wriggles free of the xeno's foul limbs. "Th-thank you, Freelancer! But -- oh, no! Mark! Please, no!" The miner crawls to the still-bleeding corpse of her companion, shaking it by the shoulders. "Please, wake up!" Myrmidon thinks of calling for the priests, but looking at the poor miner's still form, she knows it's already too late.

Sigurd charges up the stairs and east, into the room ahead of him. He sees a Thrall in front of him and immediately dispatches it with a swing of his hammer, then looks around to see another Thrall, a Marauder, and three miner hostages.

Now calculating Scav Turn 5.

In the north room, the Marauder puts away its rifle and draws two thin swords, intending to deal with this intruder up close. He charges forward at Sigurd, coordinating its attack with a treacherous backstabbing lunge from the Thrall. The Knight takes a painful slash from the Marauder and goes down on one knee, barely holding onto his last strength, but somehow blocks the finishing blow from the Thrall behind him, and remains in the fight. (Missed a backstab kill by 1)

In the east offices, the door in front of Smokes opens to reveal a Thrall. He squawks in fear and unloads with his pistol, but Smokes' shield and armor are too strong for the weapon laser fire to do any damage. Smokes can hear the hostage beyond the door, pleading for help, but another Thrall screams at it and shouts something that's certainly a threat.

A Scav dropship arrives at the blasted-open loading and disgorges troops, in much the same way as your primary squad arrived. The recruit Runner, standing obviously in the open, manages to kill one Thrall on its way down with successful reaction fire. He is then gunned down where he stands from three directions at once.

Two Marauders at the entrance allow their comrades to clean up this upstart, themselves moving forward. One gets into cover before revealing himself, and fires at Alyosha, although his shots go wide. The other Marauder, accompanied by a Thrall, charges in to the main cargo bay, where both are promptly disintegrated by a withering hail of reaction fire. Lynx remains in stealth camoflage when they see their comrades have this taken care of.

The fire to the north dies down.

Freelancer Turn 6 begins now!

Vigil blasts the Marauder across the catwalk with his shotgun for 4 damage, piercing his armor thanks to his gun's piercing rune.

Sigurd dispatches the cowardly Thrall attempting to backstab him.

Lynx repositions. Rust and Seeker take up reaction fire stances, their guns pointed at the open entrance, waiting for a better shot. Leopard hit the Marauder to the west of the entrance, dealing 1 damage.

Delphi attunes herself to the etheric realm, scanning the rooms surrounding Smokes. "I sense at least one Marauder and hostages in the room the south, Hunter, plus the two Thralls you see before you. Be careful!" She guns down a Thrall at the entrance with her autorifle.

"Thanks, lady. I'm on it." Smokes dodges past the Thrall, sliding on the ground under a stab from its dagger, and lunges back to riposte with his spear, killing it.

Hiram cast a grenade at the reinforcements, blowing up a Thrall and shredding two Marauders' armor. He fired his scout rifle, but missed.

No door is safe from Myrmidon as she slams through to slash at the remaining Marauder on the catwalk. Unfortunately, despite the heroism of her charge, he still dodges the attack.

Marauder VII steps around the corner, drawing his swords, but gets gunned down in a withering hail of reaction fire from Alyosha. Marauder IX meets a similar fate at the guns of Seeker and Rust, crouched behind cover to his right.

The Thrall behind them, having a better sense of self-preservation, stays behind cover and primes his mana grenade. He tosses it in an arc towards the trio of Freelancers crouched behind cover, blasting them with magical fury and rending their protective armor. Marauder VIII has a similiar disinclination to suicidal bravery and stays behind the protection of the outer wall, firing at Hiram, although the shots strike the crates he shelters behind.

Marauder VI cuts Sigurd's throat with a spray of blood, and the Knight falls dead. For a moment, the Scav raises his bloodied blades in triumph, roaring -- but only for a moment. Sigurd reawakens in a burst of flame, surging back to life.

Marauder IV is badly wounded, and facing a fresh opponent with a Knight's Shieldwall barrier still protecting her. Nevertheless, he draws his swords and takes on Myrmidon hand-to-hand, blade-to-blade, continuing to fight even as he bleeds, refusing to ask for quarter.

Thrall XVIII throws a mana grenade at Smoke. He blocks the damage with his shield, protecting himself, but when the blast clears, sees it's shredded beyond repair. With a tsk, he tosses it aside and prepares to wield his spear with two hands.

Smokes darts into the room nearby and uses his spear's reach to his advantage once again, skewering the thrall.

Sigurd, still smouldering from the effects of the Phoenix resurrection, faces down his killer. Myrmidon arrives in a rush to aid him, and together they strike down the Marauder. Vigil covers her assault by shotgunning her previous adversary in the face, his body tumbling backwards over the railing and crashing to the ground below.

Delphi hurls a battle scanner through the window above her. It pings the room, revealing a second hostage but no other Scavs.

Hiram's scout rifle fire deflected off the outer wall the Marauder sheltered behind.

The final remaining Marauder, in the room with the hostages, abandons his duty and tries to flee to the south. But the ever-alert Seeker spots him through the window, and with the unnatural speed of his wired reflexes, snaps to aim and fires two barrages of shotgun blasts, and both struck home, shredding the Marauder.

"Nice shot!" Graves says, "That might've been the last of them, let me check. Yep, we're looking good, team. No more dropships on the scope, no more active pings in the area. It looks like we're clear. I think we can call this mission complete, team. We saved the crawler town from Scavs, and the miners too ... well ... most of the miners." There's an uncomfortable silence for a moment, then he clears his throat and says, "A lot more would've died today if we hadn't showed up in time. That's the important thing. Great work, team. Have the Priests see to any major bleeding or missing organs, and get ready for transport back."
>>
>>1795417
Before going to the dropship, Myrmidon takes a quick look at the woman she saved, still in her room. A bit of regret still gnaws at her, for not being quick enough, mayhaps, but now is not the time to get emotional.

"Great work team, let's head back to the base. Drinks are on me this time."
>>
Delphi takes a short look at the body of the dead "Runner". Multiple gun shots riddle his chest, and head. "Sorry rookie. Got caught in the fight to save you." With that, she gently picks up his body and equipment before carrying it with her. Carefully saying a death prayer, she hoists herself into the drop ship.
>>
Smokes will drop the miners a couple of real deal cigs from his pack on the way out.
>>
>>1795417
Hiram quickly boards the dropship as his adrenaline fades, the violent death of the rookie hunter weighing heavily on his mind. After the casualty-free success of the last mission, he had let his guard down. As he took his seat, he cleared his head, telling himself that they had done the best they could.

>>1795450
"Thanks Myrmidon, going to drink quite a bit to make up for missing last mission's drinks."
>>
>>1795450
"I Don't drink but I'll come with you guys if you want"
>>
After carefully placing Runner's body inside the ship, and taking a seat, Delphi sits down.

"Let's not try to get too drunk this time. Phaws was way too drunk for this mission. At least he's not lying next to this guy." She says gesturing at the rookie's body. "... And I'm gonna pay for myself, thank you. Personal principles."
>>

>>
>>1798887
I agree. I often laugh when I fire them at things. I think we'll get along just fine.
>>
>>1798840
Hey, fella, can I ask a couple of questions?

Iron Rune and the LMG? That's a bit of a strange combination. The LMG already hits for 3 damage and is Rending, so it reduces the armor of things you shoot. Piercing bypassing armor you've already reduced just seems like a waste. A Smart Rune on the other hand would make you benefit from Rending more, and make it easier to hit.

And I'm not sure why anyone would need Blink, a Jump Pack and a Grapple. You don't need to cover all the distance between here and the stars. You sure you're not better of with Blink,a Grapple and a grenade? Or a Rune? It seems a lot of mobility prepared for situations where you won't often end up needing it all. You ever going to really need to move 25 spaces in a single turn?
>>
Hey can some tell me why they would pick a auto rifle over a LMG? I'm asking because it just looks like the LMG is an over better weapon the the auto rifle.

I get that it's meant to be the the jack of all trades ranged weapon, and have no really outstanding qualities but the LMG has the same range and damage stats and has 1 point of rend and is destructive.

What does the auto rifle got going for it, average damage and range, and +1 Crit range, or in other words it can Crit on a 9 an 10.

Honestly I feel like it could use a small buff, maybe something like +2 Crit range (crits on 8-10), or for something more crazy, keep the +1 Crit range and make it so that when you get a Crit you automatically fire again at the same target. (But that might be too overpowered)

What do you guys think?
>>
>>1798990
>>1798990
Hunter is suppose to have the max mobility you can get and help by being able to get anywhere in the map in one turn.

While Storyteller on the other hand is meant to be a tank that never has his damage reduced and shreds it to assist the team. But I did debate whether I should pick smart or iron rune.

>>1799068
I'd say its good. So is the ability to teleport over the map, but given the lack of clear sight lines and the possibiity of being shot when you don't have backup, you won't ever need 25 mobility. It would consume your entire turn, leaving your out of cover, alone and vulnerable. A grapple hook combined with blink is enough to get you 15 mobility. Then you could pick up Alacrity and shoot, then blink away.

An LMG, A shield, Titan armor and an iron is a very terriying combination though.
