You are a twelve year old boy named Masahiro Satou. You have recently graduated from the Ninja Academy by the skin of your teeth. Your family lives a simple life as owners of a barbeque restaurant popular in the Hidden Leaf Village. You’re a prodigy chef, possessing what can only be described as godly cooking abilities in the kitchen. Unfortunately, this has done you no favors with your primary goal of becoming an elite ninja.

You’re kind of a screw up in that regard, really. Before you could actually graduate, every day was a struggle. You lack any sort of innate potential as a fighter and were dead last in your class when it came to actually applying what you’ve learned in school. Sometimes people wonder how they could have possibly turned you into a ninja at your skill level. To them, you say “shrug.” But now that you’ve finally started your career, you’ll have a lot of time to grow as both a person and a warrior. If you want to survive, you need all the help you can get.

For now, you’re in your room, eyes still a bit fuzzy from having just woken up from sleep. You sit up for a second, eyes still half closed as you wait for your vision to clear up. Oh yeah. You have glasses. You yawn while putting your round spectacles on.

Now, what will you do?

>>
>>1795822
You...don't even think that's possible. Besides, really? This early in the morning? Your mom's liable to barge in on you any second now if you don't hurry your ass up and go downstairs. Besides, busting out the magazine collection right now is fatal. What if one of your siblings finds out where you hide them?

>>1795824
You’re an admittedly short twelve year old standing at about 4’10”, though you’re probably just a late bloomer because your parents have always been pretty tall. Your skin is pale, quite evidently not being exposed to the sun quite too much. You have round glasses and disheveled messy black hair that feels impossible to tame at times. You also have a bandage wrapped around your hand from an incident in the family restaurant. You’re pretty lanky all around, lacking a physique that is in anyway impressive.

>>1795829
Das gay tho.

>>1795825
Physical Stats

Speed: 2/5 (Average). You have around the speed of a normal person. Not too fast nor too slow. Can be improved by doing roadwork, running/jogging, and doing leg exercises.

Dexterity: 3/5 (Above Average). You have great perception and can work marvels with your hands. Gives you great reaction time, though it means little if you are lacking in speed. Can be improved by helping out in the kitchen and handling situations requiring perception.

Strength: 1/5 (Pitiful). You never were much of an athlete. You’re a skinny pre-teen who has always had a sickly sort of air around him. Can be improved by doing body strengthening exercises.

Social Stats

Charisma: 1/5 (Socially Awkward). You’re not bad looking by any stretch of the imagination, but you aren’t particularly charming either. You’re awkward and very clearly have some issues socializing. Girls barely spare you a glance and you’re far from achieving the max rank of 5/5 (Harem King). Can be boosted by talking to more people and growing comfortable around them.

Courage: 1/5 (Coward): You’ve always been averse to confrontation. Most people think of you as something of a doormat or a flower that needs to be protected. That is, of course, unless you’re dealing with your younger siblings. This then shifts automatically to a 5/5 (Badass). Can be boosted by standing up for yourself and acting boldly. Take baby steps, though, okay? You’ll fail terrible if you try going out of your league.

Kindness: 3/5 (Empathetic): Can’t spell “Empathetic” without “pathetic.” By far the stat you’re most proficient in. Most people feel comfortable talking to you and trust you to be non-judgmental with their problems. You can emotionally connect with people very easily. Can be boosted by helping people out and overall selfless behavior.

Equipment:

You don't currently have anything on you because you're still in your pajamas, but you usually take 5 shurikens and 3 kunai out whenever you're supposed to be doing ninja stuff. You haven't found much need for anything else.

You put on your clothing consisting of cargo shorts, a plain white t-shirt, and sandals then head downstairs to meet with your family.

"Morning—oh?" As per usual, your mother and father are cooking breakfast in the kitchen. Your younger siblings are still asleep so the table is relatively empty aside from one person: him.

"Oh, morning Tatsuya."

"Yo." A long haired boy waves back at you while stuffing his face full of grilled fish. This is your friend, Tatsuya Harada. He comes from a similar background to yours, though he’s kind of an oddball. Despite lacking the blood of any of the major clans, he has always been fairly talented from an early age. The guy’s basically what you aspire to be. He has a charisma score of at least 3/5 (Charming) and 3/5 Courage (Brave). Plus, he isn’t the type of person who would shit on you for unironically using numbers to measure social progress in your head. Probably. It’s not something you would ever share with people.

Thankfully, you got assigned to the same team, so the only person you don’t really know too well are your sensei and girl teammate.

You take a seat beside him. Your parents made it very clear that since today was going to be your first day on the job, they wanted to make breakfast for you. Tatsuya dropped by so often that he was a regular face around the house, almost like an older brother. You wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that your parents got up extra early to cook that fish for him.

“So how you feeling?” He asks out of the blue.

“Eh?”

“You had me worried, man. Things didn’t look too good for you before the exam. Last time I checked, you could barely use the transformation technique without making our teach look like an old hag. Or a functioning clone for that matter. What happened?”

"It wasn't anything special. I just worked hard is all. Besides, that test was a piece of cake." (+1 Courage)

"Oh? Where'd all that come from? If you had to work that hard, then it must’ve been tough, you blowhard.” Tatsuya gives you a friendly shove and goes back to eating his fish.

“Well...it was as easy as I could make it for myself. So what d’you think of our last teammate?”

“Don’t like her.”

“Huh?”

“Girl’s too frigid. I tried talking to her and she gave me the cold shoulder. Wonder if all the Hyuuga girls are that stuck up.”

“That’s enough for now, both of you. Tatsuya, watch out for Hiro, okay? I’d hate to think of what’d happen if our third best chef had his hands injured.” Your father says as he sets the plates down at the table. You roll your eyes.

“Second best chef, actually.” Your mother chimes in as she puts the rest of the miso soup on the table.

“Second? No need to put yourself down like that, dear.”

“Me? I’m talking about you! We’re leaps and bounds ahead of you, right?” She shoots you a glance and you raise your hands to show that you want absolutely nothing to do with this.

“Eh? You’re getting way too cocky! Don’t forget, I’m the one who took you into the restaurant business.”

Your parents go back and forth like this until the end of breakfast. You’re pretty sure that they’ve been like this since you were a toddler.

“Energetic as always, I see.” Tatsuya says as he takes half an egg from your bowl.

“So, what’re we doing today? We don’t have much time until we have to meet up at the training grounds so we’ll have to make it quick.” Tatsuya asks as the two of you walk out the door. Thankfully, your siblings seem to have overslept so you don't have to deal with them. Today, at least.

“Hmm…”

>>1795929
"Let's do 100...no, 120 push ups.” You suggest.

“Why 120?” Your friend asks.

“Uh...I dunno. Feels like the right amount to do, somehow. We need gains somehow, right?”

“You need gains.” Tatsuya flexes his muscles to show...a not so hot large amount of muscles. You can’t really say anything because he still surpasses you all the same. “Me? I’ve got all the gains I’ll ever need for the rest of my life.”

“Now look who’s the blowhard.” You chuckle. “Let’s hurry it up though, kay?”

“Yeah, yeah. We might as well just go to the training grounds early to practice. We’ll be better off with all the open space we have over there.”

You two arrived at the training grounds and did your 120 push ups. By the end of it, your arms felt like jelly. You could tell that even Tatsuya had it pretty rough, as some sweat dripped down his forehead and he was rotating his sore arms to the best of his ability to relieve the pain a bit. You sit down on your ass to catch your breath before the rest arrive.

Strength up! Keep going like this and you’re bound to get Average in no time.

Soon enough, a pale eyed girl arrives at the grounds shortly after you two finish your exercise. She’s much taller than either of you, standing at around 5’4”. She has short, raven black hair and has an aloof air about her. She has a dark tank top on and shorts very similar to yours. Her appearance is somewhat androgynous. You could understand why Tatsuya dislikes her, the two were opposites.

She was quiet and could be mistaken for a boy due to her lack of any real developing curves, while Tatsuya was far more outgoing and could probably be mistaken for a girl if he kept his mouth shut long enough. You’ve never told him this but...long hair with his kind of girly, bishie face...it didn’t do him many favors.

“What? No hi?” Tatsuya rolled his eyes as the girl walked to a target dummy without a word.

Now would be a good time to maybe greet her yourself or something. You were never really comfortable talking to girls...or many people outside of Tatsuya and your family, but you had to put yourself out there. Be warned, misspeak and your courage may go down if the backlash is large enough.

Your options now are:
>Stay silent
>Other. (Could potentially end up boosting one or more stats. However, could take away a point of courage.)

As it stands now:

Your Courage is 1/5 points until the next rank.
Your Charisma is 0/5 points until next rank.
And your kindness is 0/10 points until next rank.

As a result of your exercise, Strength is 1/7 points from the next rank.

“H-hi! I’m Masahiro.” You pat your chest with your hand as you introduce yourself. The girl raises her head to look at you, a stoic expression still on her face. “I’m the guy who transformed and turned into the teacher with a really, really big...er, anyway. Nice to meet you...er.”

“Hiro, forget it. She’s practically mute.” Tatsuya shakes his head. “If I couldn’t get a word out of her then no one—”

“Hyuuga Ai.” She responds with a deadpan tone.

“Huh?” You and Tatsuya say in unison, glancing at each other in surprise.

“Hey what gives? You were dead silent when I tried talking to you!” Tatsuya said with an insulted tone. Ai stayed silent, not even sparing him a glance. Then, she rolled her eyes, deciding to indulge him just this once.

“You’re annoyingly loud.” She said bluntly. Tatsuya glared at her, clearly taken aback by her words given his lack of rebuttal. You decide that maybe it’d be best to change the subject.

“So! Uh, what’s your technique like? I hear people from your family have the byakugan, right? What kinda stuff can you use it for?”

“Reconnaissance. Seeing chakra.” She said awfully curtly.

“Ah, I see…” With that, there’s an awkward silence in the air. You lack the charisma to keep talking to someone so forcefully silent, but your efforts have reaped benefits. You faced a fear and decided to talk to someone unfamiliar, therefore your rewards are:

Charisma +1, Courage +1.

Though that doesn’t really solve the strange atmosphere in the air, now does it?

After a few moments, the three of you notice a man dashing towards you. You gasp when you take notice of his frame. Blonde hair, long beard, the body of a giant that can make anyone in his presence feel absolutely insignificant, and most importantly of all the blue pants and green jacket that are a signature of all chunin and jounin. A feeling of dread casts over you. Though you met him yesterday, you still find it hard to believe that this raging bull is supposed to be your sensei.

Ai’s eyes widen as she realizes that he’s coming right towards him. She rolls off to the side just in time to avoid her sensei charging headfirst into the training dummy and slipping shortly thereafter, leaving the training dummy in pieces.

“Tai-sensei? You feeling okay?” Tatsuya asks, barely able to suppress a grin. Ai looks like she’s absolutely fuming. You...are just wondering if your sensei’s gonna be okay. He’s been laying face down on the floor for a few seconds now. “Oi, Hiro, take this.” Tatsuya says as he passes you a tree branch.

“What am I supposed to do with this?” You raise an eyebrow.

“What d’you mean? Poke the guy. It’s the only way to tell if he’s still alive.”

“What?! Do it yourself! He’s part of the Akimichi. What if he slaps me with that giant arm if I wake him up?”

“If you wanna do it right, you gotta do it yourself.” Tatsuya sighs.

“I prefer him asleep.” Ai chimes in, brows still furrowed in anger.

Tatsuya pokes him in the stomach and the man suddenly springs back to life, his imposing frame being made all the more evident as he leaps up on his feet, shaking the ground somewhat.

“Apologies for being late! I appear to have overslept!” The three of you cover your ears instinctively. His loud voice physically pains all of you. “Today I am going to show the three of you the importance of teamwork and the follies that isolation brings! Understood?!”

You nod your head furiously, eyes closed in fear.

“Good! But before I can begin the lesson, I will need a volunteer! Any takers?!”

((Holy unanimous vote! Sorry for the delay, was hitting the gym.))

“I-I-I’ll do it!” You declare, garnering you the attention from both of your teammates. Ai raises her eyebrows in mild shock, while Tatsuya’s jaw seems to drop. He places a finger up in the air as though to say “one second” and drags you by the arm a few feet away from the other time. He almost looks angry at you for what you’ve done.

“What are you, retarded? You saw what that guy almost did to that chick! And she’s actually got some training. How the hell do you plan on surviving that?” Tatsuya scolds you in a hushed voice. His words resonate with you quite a bit and you yourself are unsure as to why you decided to do such a thing.

For a moment, you stay silent.

“W-well, you’re always telling me to man up, right. So—”

“Retard!” Tatsuya glares. “I tell you to man up, not throw your life away. There’s a fine line between being brave and being stupid!”

You stay silent, his word sinking in. Tatsuya sighs. Although you did do something very courageous, you immediately regret it. You feel no boost in courage, only despair.

“Well, what’s the worst that can happen...right?” You reply and walk towards the other two and you hear Tatsuya’s palm very loudly colliding with his face behind you. You stand in front of Tai and watch as a smile creeps up on his face.

“Very good! Now then, allow me to explain!” Tai takes out a single bell and places it on the ground in front of him. “You won’t always be able to do everything on your own! Teamwork and strategy is essential if you ever decide to take on a mission. Loners who try shouldering burdens on their own will only ever experience a world full of pain. Now, let us demonstrate. Boy! Come and try taking these bells from me by your lonesome. Take as much time as you need to think of a strategy. If you succeed, I promise to take the three of you to my favorite buffet!”

You gulp. Yeah, you weren’t at all confident you would be able to do this. You tighten your forehead protector extra tight. This did not look good. Not one bit.

For reference:

Known Jutsu: Clone Technique and Transformation Technique.

Chakra and Control: 2/5 (Passable). You have just around the amount of chakra control needed to perform E and D rank techniques, though the latter obviously require much more effort. Must be raised before Ninjutsu and Genjutsu can be improved.

Taijutsu: 1/5. (Grandma). Taijutsu never really was your strong suit. You were always the one who got kicked around during sparring matches. Thankfully, it never did play too big of a role in passing the Academy Exams.

Ninjutsu: 2/5 (Apprentice Ninja Mage). Nothing special. In fact, you had to pull off non stop working to even get to this level, hence Tatsuya being so surprised that you passed in the first place.

Genjutsu 2/5 (Amateur Illusionist). You have the core fundamentals of genjutsu down and can apply them thanks to your average level of chakra control. However, you will need someone to teach you some techniques before you can truly apply your knowledge.

You wait for a second to further contemplate your course of action, everyone’s eyes on you. Instead of going directly towards it, you make a u-turn towards the forest, confusing everyone around you.

“Uh, little guy? Don’t you want this bell?” Tai asks with furrowed brows. You simply raise a thumb to confirm yes as you continue silently walk away. “Okay…”

Once you arrive at the forest, you spot a group of copper pheasants. At first, your kindness keeps them from running away the moment you appear. Seeing as you exude a naturally comforting aura, most animals feel comfortable around you until you screw around with them. You shoo them away towards the direction where your teammates are still waiting for you. You then wait to gather up your chakra and use the Dog → Boar → Ram sequence to transform into one of the pheasants.

The transformation doesn’t seem to go as planned, however. Your eyes still have the same brown color that they always have—not that you realize it. You walk out with the along with the rest of the pheasants as they begin the march. When you come out of the forest with the group, all three of your companions seemed to have taken a seat and were chatting it up with the sensei as they ate their bento boxes.

Perfect...though it did feel kind of lonely. You hop towards the bell and attempt to grab it. But then…

“And that’s the story of how I ate seventy two ramen bowls in a single—hold on.” Tai gives your bird form a slight flick with his thumb and index finger. You’re sent flying backwards and your form reverts back to human as you skid on the floor.

“Oh no! This is the third time this year! Um, class dis…” You can’t hear the last of the man’s words. All you know for certain is that this man must at least have level 4 (Superhuman) or level 5 (Herculean) amounts of strength. And with that, your first day as a ninja comes to a halt.

>>
>>1797366
>FNQ faded into obscurity with an uninteresting MC
The problem wasn't the MC, it was that the story stalled out and the QM decided to go on hiatus like literally ever other Naruto QM. And if the problem was the MC then this is probably already doomed, Mashiro is just a blander Kuro so far.

>Boruto Quest exploded from a shitstorm
I remember it being more civil than Shinobi Quest or (insert SOMNIUS Quest here) but those are pretty bad examples, to be fair.

It would have probably been better to rip off Shinobi Quest and Leaf Ninja Quest though, considering those QMs are either in jail or MIA for five months.

The moment you realize this is happening, you swim towards the light with reckless abandon. And the moment you touch it…

“Ow! Ow! Ow! Quit it!” You open your eyes to find an extended arm being grabbed by a frowning Tatsuya. You blink and stare blankly at him. He throws your arm right back at you. “Honestly, if you were gonna be this violent I wouldn’t have waited for you for so long.”

“Eh...I was knocked out, right?” You place a hand on your aching forehead and notice that the entirety of it has been wrapped by a bandage. “How long?”

“Like a day.” He replied bitterly. You only just realize that his eyes looked incredibly baggy.

“Did you...wait for me all that time?” Before you knew it, a smile crept onto your face and a bead of sweat formed visibly on the side of Tatsuya’s head.

“Kiss my ass. If you died I wouldn’t get free food at your house. My mom’s always out with some new guy so I’d be starving if that happened.” Tatsuya said very defensively.

“Whatever you say. So, what happened with the lesson?” You ask.

“Well, it was one of those secret tests of character. Teamwork and all that. Me and Ai worked pretty well hauling your ass back home so Tai said that we passed.” Tatsuya’s eyes rolled as he mentioned the man. “Pretty sure he just felt guilty about what happened.”

“Oh…”

“He’s giving you a day to rest so use it wisely. We’re gonna meet back up tomorrow so be ready. Now, if you excuse me…” Tatsuya stood up and stretched his entire body.

Will you:

“See ya.” You wave goodbye to him as he walks away. You’ve probably asked him for enough favors for one day. You’ll be stuck in your room all day and you wouldn’t want to subject Tatsuya to that same torture. On the brightside, you do have an entire day you can use on training.

You figure it’d be best to focus on Chakra control. You never were much of a physical fighter, so the most logical thing to do would be to focus on what you’re...okay at. So for the rest of the day, you spend your time transforming into each and every one of your friends. Transformations require a specific amount of chakra to perform. Go over the limit and your transformation looks like a disaster, go under and your change is half-baked.

After two hours of this repetitive task, you feel much more comfortable with transforming and feel better about using your chakra overall.

Chakra Control goes up by 2 points! 8 points left until the next rank.

You take a few deep breaths and try recuperating from the work you did when you suddenly hear a loud knocking on the door.

“Hiro! You in here? Tacchan said you finally woke up and I’m hungry!” That shrill voice belongs to your younger sister. You look at your clock and see that it’s already time for dinner. Mom and Dad must be busy down at the restaurant or something.

“Yeah, yeah, I hear ya. Be there in a sec.” You reply.

The cook it is, then.

“Cool it, Asahi, I’m going.” You open the door to see your little sister on her stomach, knocking as though it were her only way means of survival. “You know, by the time I was your age I could at least make my own—”

“Food! Food! Food!” She starts knocking on your leg with as much vigor as she was knocking on the door.

You roll your eyes and drag her into the living room by her leg, picking her up to sit her down at the table. Your other sister, Momo, has her face planted on the table, groaning uncontrollably while rubbing her belly.

“You two are real pieces of work, you know that?” You sigh and enter the kitchen. The moment you take your first step into it, you physically feel your kindness go down to 1/5 (Iron Chef). You’re like a machine as you work to make Sashimi in the kitchen. Your precision is unmatched as you gather the ingredients together, an uncharacteristically stone cold expression on your face as you work. Sashimi is a basic dish, indeed, but your little sisters’ constant whining makes it hard for you to care too much.

When you’re done, you take out three plates. Two are in your left and right hand respectively, with the last one being on your head. You are also holding a small knife in your mouth by its wooden handle for reasons that will become very obvious momentarily. Mechanically, you put all of the plates in front of everyone’s seats and just like that...

“Yum! Okay, let’s—” Momo reaches out to pick up her chopsticks, but in the blink of an eye you take the knife in your mouth and throw it at her hands. As planned, it lands right between her index and middle finger. She leaps back a bit as if to think about what she did wrong. “Oh yeah, praying! S-sorry, big bro.”

You all sit down and pray before digging back into your meals. You often get told that your change in personality is damn near comedic whenever you’re in the kitchen. You put your hands together and give a small prayer of thanks for the food.

After the prayers finish, all three of you dig in. You feel extra dextrous after all that. Your dexterity goes up by two points! 8 more points until the next rank. Kindness is back to 3/5 now that the appropriate prayers have been said.

((Huh?))

The rest of that day was fairly uneventful. Your parents came back and you presented them with some of the sashimi that you made. Then, you decided that it was about time that you hit the hay. Injuries healing nicely, you fall asleep and start the next day.

Day 2 OVER

The next day is very similar to the first. Siblings sleeping, Tatsuya again at the breakfast table waiting for you, and parents ready to make you breakfast. Although, strangely, Tatsuya still had the exact same baggy eyes from yesterday and a bandaged cut on his hand.

“Guess we’re twins now, huh?” He says, walking through the door with a smile.

“I guess...what’s with that cut, anyway?” You reply.

“Nothin’ much. Mom and Sis just got into an argument is all. They get really stupid sometimes.” He says nonchalantly with a yawn. “So, we got some more time to kill, huh?. What do you wanna do before we meet up with the other two?”

You can tell you won’t be able to squeeze any more info out of him, so you decide to drop the subject of his cut. Although, something is definitely still quite off with him. His mannerisms seem more forced than usual.

With that in mind, what do you suggest?

>Suggest finding Ai to go to the grounds as a team—team-bonding is important, after all.

“Hey, uh, Tatsuya. You wanna maybe...try picking up some girls again?” You say with some reluctance. His eyes light up immediately and a smirk spreads on his face. You immediately regret your words, but it’s too late to take them back now.

“Ooooooh?” He wraps an arm around your neck and his voice takes a teasing tone. “Finally decided to take the first step for yourself, huh? That’s pretty good, I was starting to wonder that you were...y’know. C’mon I’ll help you out!” You feel his arm move away from your neck and promptly facepalm. This was a bad idea. This was a very, very, bad idea.

“Okay…” You follow after the still grinning Tatsuya. He motions for you to get closer as you reach a crossroad in the village. The two of you hide behind a pillar and urges you to stay silently and look at what he’s staring at. She’s probably one of the cutest girls you’ve ever seen, which brings you to realize that she’s way out of your league.

Tatsuya drags you by the arm before you can protest and walks right in front of the girl. You freeze. You notice that she’s carrying a bag of flour in her arms and then look back at her face to see her blankly staring at the both of you.

“Hey there, beauty, my name’s Tatsuya, but you can call me Tacchan if you want.” Tatsuya puffs his chest out impressively, yet the girl remains unamused. “And this guy’s—”

“Your gay lover?” She cuts him off immediately, causing him to jump back a little and defensively let go of your arm.

“No, no, nothing like that! This is, well, you tell her.”

He looks at you. This mission is off to a rocky start and you’re 99 percent sure that any girls who would reject Tatsuya probably wouldn’t even give you the time of day. What do you say?

“I-I-I-I see you’re not wearing any pants! That’s—” She puts a finger up to her lips to indicate that you should be quiet, which you immediately obey. Tatsuya, on the other hand, doesn’t take the not so subtle hint that this mission was a definite failure.

“So hey, where’re you going? I could help you with that flour. Ninja like us are here to help dainty little things like you.” He points a thumb at his headband and the girl simply shakes her head.

“You definitely weren’t in my class last year, that’s for sure. Are they making everyone and their mothers ninja these days? Beat it, it’s bad enough I have to spend my day making dumplings.” She walks away with a huff, not bothering to spare either of you a glance.

Went better than you expected, actually.

Tatsuya waved his hand dismissively around the girl, moving his hand to your shoulder, before putting it back to his sides. Evidently, his mind was still on the “gay lover” thing. Admittedly, so was yours, that was a low blow…

“Forget her, man. She didn’t have any curves anyway!” He turns and smiles at you, patting you on the back. His mood was better so mission accomplished, you guess? “But you did way better than last time. You stuttered so hard I had to smack you even after the girls left. Keep going like this and you’ll have girls all over you in no time.”

He nods his head as though to confirm that he was speaking the truth.

((The mods took mercy on me! Let's hope I don't do something retarded again.))

You and Tatsuya begin walking over to the training grounds after that embarrassing display. As you arrive at the scene, you notice Ai there, desperately rubbing the nape of her neck as though trying to scrub away grime that cannot be cleansed.

“Yo! You okay there?” Tatsuya calls out, causing Ai to flinch out of fright and quickly put her hand down. Her face is still emotionless as you two approach her and she simply turns around to avoid looking at either of you.

Before you can so much as think about asking what’s wrong, you notice a giant approaching you all. You instinctively back away out of fear, not realizing that your body is moving on its own. If anything, Tai at last had the courtesy of walking over to everyone like a normal human being this time. His eyes meet yours and he immediately looks away like a child caught doing something wrong.

“Before we begin, very sorry for the...complications. As an apology for last time, I bring you these.” He takes out a pouch and presents it to you on his knees like a servant. “Please accept my greatest apologies!” You are very certain that he’s on the brink of crying by his sudden voice crack as he roared out an apology.

You take a glance at Tatsuya, who shrugs. You take the bag and open it up to see a variety of pills. Tai stands up and explains what the pills are.

“Two Blood-Increasing Pills and one Focus pill. The latter’s a new one the Akimichi family’s had in the works for a while now. So, uh, enjoy! Take it and I guarantee you’ll be twice as effective in your training!” He claps his hands together. “So! Onto today! I’ve decided that it’d be good, safe team bonding if you all worked. We’ve got two missions to choose from, so let me explain.”

Mission 1: Find the hound! The Inuzuka have recently lost a pup that was thought to be safely in its cage. There have been rumors of a group of men sneaking off during the night to dogfight and the Inuzuka clan believes that there’s a strong correlation between the two. Find the place where the dogs are being taken and bust it down. C-rank mission. Tai will accompany you.

Mission 2: A local weapons shop owner has recently lost her cat and is willing to gift any ninja who finds it with a few cheap weapons for free. D-rank mission.

“So you all agree on the first mission? Good! Just the thought of all those poor innocents dogs fighting each other was making my blood boil!” He crosses his arms and nods his head. “Between you and me, I never really was much of a cat person. Anyhow, we’ve already been given some information on a potential suspect. There’s an Inuzuka named Sho who left the clan after some sort of disagreement in the family. I think he got tired of living with so many dogs, for whatever reason.” He shrugs.

“We meet back here near midnight to start the mission. Understood?” You all nod shortly in response. There’s a sinking feeling in your chest. Is having your first mission be a C-rank really that good of an idea? “Great! I’ll see you all later then.” He walks away, clutching his chest with a hand and exhaling. “No damage this time…” You hear him say on the way out.

“So, we’re rescuing—hey, where are you going?” You hear Tatsuya ask as Ai makes her leave. She pauses and looks back at him, as though to ask him what he meant. “We’re supposed to be a team, right? Even if you don’t like us, we’re not gonna make any progress if you bolt as soon as we’re done here. Weren’t you listening to a word Tai was telling us two days ago?” Ai sighs and turns back at you two.

“What did you have in mind?” She says with clear discontent.

Well,” Tatsuya nudges you, “what do you think we should do, Hiro?”

“Well, do you guys wanna stop by for some lunch? My house should be empty right now since my parents are off at the restaurant and my sisters are in school.” You ask and Tatsuya immediately beams out a smile.

“There’s no way I’ll let you pass out on Hiro’s cooking, Ai. C’mon.” Tatsuya presses on her back to urge her to walk forward. Within seconds, Ai’s byakugan activates and she immediately pushes him backward, making him stumble down to the ground on his rear.

“Do not touch me.” She says with serious enmity in her voice.

“What the hell’s your problem?” Tatsuya puts out a hand which you grab to pull him up. Assessing the situation quickly you figure it’d be best to diffuse the situation before it gets any worse.

“Hey, come on, let’s just forget about it. We’re gonna hang out to have fun, right?” Tatsuya and Ai exchange cold looks at one another. You start walking and wave a hand at them. Tatsuya goes with you and Ai reluctantly follows.

The trip to your house is filled with awkward silence amongst the three of you. You get the sense that Ai is only coming with you out of a sense of obligation after Tatsuya’s talk of team building.

You all enter your home and leave your footwear by the door. Immediately you put on your apron and nudge Ai towards the table. Both she and Tatsuya sit down, not sharing a single word. You’ll have to start a conversation between them somehow…

But for now, what do you cook?

You decide to make sushi.

In much the same way as before, you become entranced in the task as you quickly cook some rice, get the dried seaweed ready, and chop through all of the ingredients. Though you are focused on the task at hand, you still can’t help but notice the silence coming from the kitchen. Food first, friends later. You keep slicing and dicing food until you find an end product you’re satisfied with. It was difficult work, but well worth the wait.

You feel your dexterity go up by another two points!

You present the meals to your guests who all audibly gasp as you set the food on the table. Tatsuya already knows the drill and starts the prayer; Ai follows after him out of politeness. After the prayers are done, you notice some strange reactions from the two of them. Tatsuya smiles stupidly like there was an orgasm in his mouth while Ai covers her mouth in shock and nods.

“Been ages since I’ve tasted your sushi. Looks like you haven’t lost your edge, huh?”

“It is quite good.”

You smile at your teammates’ compliments. With the ice thoroughly broken by your food, maybe now would be a nice time to strike up a conversation between the three of you. There may be a charisma boost in it for you depending on what you say.

Now then, what DO you say?

“So, how about we get to know each other a bit? I think we’re supposed to do this thing where we share some stuff about each other once we become ninja, right? I think Tai-sensei forgot to mention it, so why don’t we start now?” You suggest. For some reason, Tatsuya starts cracking up. You tilt your head a bit and give him a confused look.

“Sorry, sorry, it’s just funny in hindsight. Tai-sensei brought it up and we already shared all that stuff.” Tatsuya stops laughing when he sees the dejected look on your face. “But we wouldn’t mind doing that again, right?” You both turn to Ai who barely seems to realize that you’re there as she stuffs sushi rolls into her mouth. You and Tatsuya silently agree to take that as a yes.

“You probably already know mine already, but I’ll share it with you anyway for the hell of it.” Tatsuya leans back in his chair and starts speaking. “My dream is get loaded by working as a ninja so I can move out of the shithole I love in with my mom and sis. I like cute girls and dislike most other guys.” Yup, that was about what you expected. He never really did get along too well with the other boys back at school.

After stuffing down another sushi roll, Ai clears her throat as she realizes her own rudeness.

“My dream is to break free from the control of the main family and force them to abolish the class system entirely.” Ai moves her hair’s bangs out of the way to reveal the cursed seal of the branch family. “Though I suppose a secondary goal would be to take my byakugan to its limits and unlock the ability to see fate with it. I dislike being touched.”

“That’s not what you said you disliked before.” Tatsuya rolled his eyes. “Last time it was ‘loud, annoying people,’ wasn’t it? Haven’t you figured out something you like.

She falls silent.

“I like sushi.” She says plainly before looking at you. It feels strange to see her look at you with anything other than pure disinterest. You feel your charisma boost by at least one point. “Your turn.”

“Ah! W-well, I like cooking, dislike bullies, and my dream is…”

What is your dream?

“To protect all those close to me and become an elite ninja!” You say with unexpected passion.

“Kind of a boring dream, but I think it suits you.” Tatsuya smiles at you.

“It is honorable, if anything.” Ai says, nodding her head.

Despite their somewhat backhanded compliments, you feel more confident after reminding yourself of your goal. After that, you all have a rather relaxed discussion. Tatsuya and Ai seem to be getting along alright and you sense that she’s slowly becoming more comfortable being around you. Quickly, an hour or two passes by and Ai remembers that she has some training to do with her uncle, though the tone in her voice leads you to believe that it’s a terrible kind of burden on her. Before she leaves, however…

“Um, Hiro?” She freezes as she reaches for the doorknob.

“Hm?”

“Forgive me if I’m being presumptuous, but…” Her voice trails off as though she lost it, but she quickly regains steam. “WouldyouminditterriblyifIcamehereagain?!” Though her back is still turned, you can tell that she feels flustered even asking.

“H-huh? Oh, sure, sure! Any time you want!” She mutters out a small “thank you” as she leaves through the door. After all that, you feel a change occur in you. You feel just a tiny bit more charismatic and way more confident in yourself than you were before. In fact, you just moved up a rank!

Charisma: Three points away until next rank.

Courage: Rank 2: Recuperated Victim of Bullying. You’ve gotten over your horrible sense of self esteem and have graduated up to simply a poor sense of self esteem. You can now be more direct in conversations, though you still lack the confidence to confront those with nasty personalities or imposing figures and will still frequently second guess your own decisions. Six points away until the next rank.

“Well, I should probably get ready for the mission myself.” Tatsuya waves and makes his way out the door.

“Don’t oversleep again!” You call out.

“Bite me!” You hear him reply.

It is 12:30 AM. You had to pull a few strings to convince your parents that it would be a good idea to let you come here—you’ll be off-duty and working at the restaurant for a week after this. Something tells you Tai-sensei won’t be doing much to help you with that one. But as it stands, you’re currently hiding in a dark alleyway and staking out a small home belonging to Sho Inuzuka. You have a walkie-talkie in your hand you were instructed to use when the suspect left his home. Your role is to announce his leave and tell the team which way he’s going.

However, you were specifically instructed not to follow after him under any circumstances. Tai said it was for “safety purposes” but you’re pretty sure that just means “you’re too weak to do anything else.”

Sho leaves his home and locks up, holding a small cage in his hand. Even from your position you can hear whatever’s in there struggle to no avail to escape its confinement. Now’s about the time to report that he seems to be heading off towards “Matsuda’s Barbecue” an old BBQ restaurant that got run out of business by your own parents.

You’ve been feeling kind of gutsy and mildly insulted since the mission briefing so here are your options:

“Iron chef here, suspect is clearly on his way to Matsuda’s Barbecue. Prince, A, and...um, Big Oniisan, do you copy? Over.”

“We copy.” You hear Tai’s voice over the walkie talkie. “We are currently on the rooftop and following after the suspect. Target has entered the building and we can see that several other men are holding similar cages, over. All members seem to have entered the building. Iron chef stand by, we can handle things from here. Over.” Your walkie-talkie suddenly goes silent. But you couldn’t find it in yourself to obey the command. You had to show everyone on the team that you were more than just the load.

You peek your teammates and sensei while hiding behind a pillar. You see Tai-sensei strut over to the restaurant building and kick down the door, yelling “All of you, on the floor, now!” He barges in and Tatsuya and Ai follow, somewhat shocked. You approach the restaurant slowly and hear a guy speak out against the three of them.

“C’mon, we’re just having our own bit of fun. Dogs are just like any other animal. Look at this thing, blood in its eyes, ready to bust out of its cage at any second. It lives just to fight, so what’s wrong with indulging it a bit?” You take a few paces into the restaurant and peek in. The man speaking was Sho Inuzuka, who was backed up by a couple of other men who were just about ready to release the animals in their cages. Tatsuya and Ai seemed understandably nervous.

The former had his fingers pointing at them in the shape of a gun, an orb of flames forming at the tip of his index finger. You forget occasionally, but Tatsuya was always talented and had been working on creating his own basic technique for quite a while. Ai was masterful at sparring back in the academy and you yourself have been on the receiving end of one of her attacks on more than one occasion. You could clearly tell that she was using the Byakugan right now and her stance belonged to the all too familiar gentle fist style.

All three of them have their eyes focused on Sho, but you notice that one of the members of Sho’s group is fiddling around with the lock of his dog cage. If he released it, there was no doubt that the animal inside would immediately run to target Tatsuya. Red flags immediately started waving in front of you.

Without a second’s delay, you grab a shuriken from your pocket and launch it straight at the man’s hand before he can finish opening the cage. He yells out in pain and you’re almost surprised at what you did. Maybe there was a much bigger correlation between being a good cook and being a good ninja than you though? You always did have good dexterity, if anything.

Your teammates look at you with shock as you dash towards them and stand beside them. The tension in the air is slowly getting to you. Sweat forms on your body as it seemingly moves on its own.

“You two, focus on the enemy! We’ll have to take care of them without harming the dogs!” Tai chastises your teammates for their distraction over your arrival and they immediately redirect their attention towards their foes, who were distracted by their ally swearing as he nursed his wound.

“Let’s see how you handle—” Another man tried opening up a dog cage, but before either of you can realize it, you throw another shuriken at his hand. Your hand twitches, feeling its own actions to be completely out of character. It’s overwhelming—frightening, even. You have three shuriken left.

One of the man takes his chances and charges at Ai, who immediately presses her palms not too forcefully on his body. All the same, he’s down for the count seconds later with his chakra nodes being completely sealed off.

Another one tries to open yet another cage, but Tatsuya’s already all over him. The orb of fire that formed on his finger shot out in a sudden burst and passed through the man’s hand, leaving a gaping hole inside of it. The man let out another scream and Tatsuya frowned, but used the Dragon hand sign to start producing yet another orb of fire on his fingertip.

But amongst all this chaos there was one person who was unaccounted for—Sho himself. He busts out his dog cage without a problem and out comes a rabid dog—far too large to be a pup, but still possessing the snow white fur Inuzuka dogs were known for—sprinting towards Tatsuya, completely ignoring that you positioned yourself right next to him.

((There's more to this update but it won't fit so hold on, please.))
Without thinking, you move in front of Tatsuya and the dog leaps at you to bite your shoulder. You bend down on one knee, dog still chewing away at you. Your flesh is being torn by the second, though you lack a sense of panic. You cannot so much as imagine what this dog has been through over the past few days.

“There, there...if biting me’s what you need to do, then go right ahead.” It hurts, but you know that the dog’s pain far exceeds your own. You pet the dog’s back and let it rest on your knee. Its growling calms down and you feel the pressure of its bite relax a bit until it unlatches itself from your shoulder entirely, teeth covered in your blood. You were definitely going to feel that one in the morning.

“Hiro, are you okay?” You feel lightheaded as Tai asks you this, but you try your damndest to nod your head yes. Up close to the dog you notice all the bite marks it has throughout its body—pieces of both missing flesh and fur alike. It’s a marvel that you managed to calm it down at all. Had you delayed things any longer your shoulder would be destroyed. You could tell by its size that the once pup was now in its adolescence, yet its fangs were still enough to tear you about. Inuzuka dogs were scary.

“Partial multi-size technique!” Tai exclaims, arm growing rapidly in size. With rage in his eyes, he launches a fist at Sho. The attack seemingly connected—only for the jounin to realize that he had, in fact, attacked a log. From that point on, Sho was nowhere to be found.

“Should we go lookin’ for him?” Tatsuya asks.

“Yes, go with Ai and track him down. He never was much of a ninja according to the Inuzuka so the two of you should be able to handle things on your lonesome. Tracking has never been my forte, so you two have a better chance than I do. In the meantime, I need to have a talk with Hiro.” Tai looks at you with disapproval, immediately filling you with guilt. You avoid his gaze and look down at the dog, whose head is now resting on your lap. Tatsuya and Ai leave, giving you one last look of astonishment before they leave through the restaurant’s back door.

“On a mission, the most important thing for a shinobi to do is follow orders. If he can’t manage that much, the whole unit falls apart—let me see your shoulder.” Tai approaches you and bends down, chakra filling his hands. He places them on your shoulder and you slowly feel the pain ease up and the blood stops leaking. “I’ve only studied the basics so don’t rely on me too much. That wound’s liable to open up if you do anything crazy in the next few days.”

“Mm.” Is your only response, which is met with a sigh by your sensei.

“What you did today was impressive.” Tai looked back at the men with shuriken in their hand, still too paralyzed to even think of moving, then turned back to you. “More talent than I was told you had when they assigned you all to me admittedly...but uh, anyway, don’t do anything so reckless ever again. It worked out well this time, but it could end up costing you your entire team one day. Got it?” You nod your head and he pats you on the head.

“Good, I’ll be expecting a lot out of you from now on. Don’t let me down, okay?” He smiles at you, though you are taken aback by his words. His words should have filled you with pride, convincing him that you were worth something was the entire point of you doing all of this. But something about the way he said it made you feel more nervous than happy. Someone was relying on you for something more than cooking? That was a new one.

All the same, your experience has made you feel both more empathetic towards those suffering in the world and brave enough to confront those who cause the pain in the first place.

Courage up! 5 points until the next rank. (2/7)
Kindness up! 8 points until the next rank. (2/10)

“Now, how ‘bout you take that dog back to the Inuzuka Clan? They said that they’d leave someone outside their gates to take it back in case we actually succeeded! Lo and behold, it was no problem!” He laughed loudly, his lighthearted attitude quickly returning.

“Understood. Come on, doggy.” You call out for it and it follows you out the restaurant door.

“Just a little farther, little buddy.” Almost a half hour later, you arrive at the gate. A good thing, too, as you noticed that the dog had a really bad limb. Had it run solely on adrenaline while it was with Sho?

“Took you long enough.” You see a wild looking boy—maybe a year or two older than you—awaiting you right beside the gate. “Good job or whatever. I’ll take that thing off your hands now.” The boy reached down to grab the dog by the fur on its neck. Immediately, it lashes out with several ferocious barks. The Inuzuka boy pauses, unfettered by the sudden reaction and looks down at it. He whistles and raises his eyebrows.

“Shit, I didn’t notice it at first because of how dark it is but this thing’s completely wrecked. What’d that asshole do to it?” He looked at the dog angrily, though it was obviously directed more towards Sho than anyone else. “Well, whatever. I don’t think I can take this thing back.”

“What?! Why not?” You almost yell out in outrage.

“Shut the hell up! What, you wanna wake up the entire village?” You stay silent and allow him to continue. “Look, for whatever reason it seems really close to you. Maybe it’s because you smell like sushi or something. I wouldn’t feel too hot about taking it away from you and it’s a huge hassle to retrain dogs with all these bad behaviors. So how ‘bout you just keep it?”

“Huh? Seriously?” He shrugs.

“Why not? It likes you so it’ll be easier if you help it grow out of whatever the hell it’s been doing for the last few weeks. You’re gonna have to come over here at least a few days a week to get some tips on training it, though. What’ll it be?”

“Well, I don’t think it can be helped.”

“Good. Saves us a world of trouble.” He stretches a bit and lets out another yawn. “So, have you checked yet?”

“Checked what?”

“What else? It’s sex. And you’ll be it’s partner from now on so it’s up to you to name it—that Sho bastard took it before we had the chance.”

“Okay, so he’s definitely a boy.” You checked. “I think I’ll call him...Bora.”

“Bora? What’s that mean?” The Inuzuka boy asks.

“I dunno. Just seems like it fits.” He squints his eyes at you. “What?”

“If you’re gonna half ass a name like that then I won’t be able to sleep at night after giving him up to you. Get him to a vet tomorrow and c’mere after. Name’s Kazuya, by the way. Now if you excuse me, I’ve got some sleep to catch up on. See ya, Glasses.” Kazuya walks away, waving without even asking your name.

“Oh my name’s...ah, he’s gone.” You get on one knee and pet Bora’s head. The dog nuzzles up against the palm of your hand and licks it. “You’re gonna have to be on your best behavior. My parents are gonna throw a fit when they see you for sure. Man, I wonder how long I’ll have to work in the restaurant to convince them to let me keep you. 2 weeks? 3? A month?”

You probably should keep his contact with your little sisters to a minimum until he’s better trained.

>>
The next morning goes about as well as you imagined. Your parents tried everything in their power to dissuade you from keeping a dog. They brought up how hard it would be to manage your ninja training, cooking at the restaurant, AND taking care of a dog all at once. Eventually, you managed to talk them down by promising to focus on working at the restaurant for yet another week. Tatsuya mentioned that Tai-sensei would only really call you if he wanted you all to do more missions, had a lesson to improve your abilities, or to treat you for some food.

“I’ll meet up with you guys at the restaurant. I should probably take Bora to the vet first.” You say, placing a leash around the dog’s neck.

“Just don’t waste too much time, Hiro.” Your mom tells you at the door. “Ever since Matsuda’s closed down we’ve been having way more business.”

“Oh, uh, sure thing.” A bead of sweat forms on the side of your head when she mentions that name. Speaking of Matsuda, you find it strange that he wasn’t anywhere to be found last night. You figured that the owner of the restaurant would be in it before the raid. That brings up another point, you haven’t seen hair nor hide of Tatsuya and Ai since the mission last night. Tai just told you to go home right after you finished your mission. He needed no help apprehending the people at the dogfighting ring and it wasn’t like you could help Tatsuya and Ai with your pitifully low speed.

So far, your schedule looks pretty packed with mostly chores and work. How about changing things up for a bit? You may be able to learn more about your teammates and the people around you.

How about it? Change perspective until tomorrow?

((I'm curious, what's with the hate towards perspective changes? They're a good way to flesh out other characters and can be interesting when done right. Stuff like Durarara especially does them well.))
>>
>>1804732
Players like to get invested in one character- while changes do flesh out the lore, they also effectively waste the limited running time a QM has for gains of dubious value
>>
>>1804732
I at least feel like most authors cant pull them off correctly and just either sporadically pop to one character and then another like a spastic, and try to focus on them all and flesh them out equally and then get over their heads. Or they just perspective change very rarely and its just jarring and weird when they actually do. I'm not saying your too shit to do it, I'm just saying I don't trust a single person on this board to do it right.

((Mmm, I see. I was just thinking that since Masahiro's mostly vanilla because he's just started out his journey, it might be nice to see the things that the other members of the team are getting up to. Plus, I think being in the shoes of someone like Tatsuya for even a day would be a good way to flesh out both him and Masahiro as characters + give you more options that you wouldn't be able to get just playing as Hiro.

How about this: at some point in the near future, I switch perspectives to Tatsuya when Masahiro's wrapped up in some thing or another. If you guys still feel lukewarm towards the concept we won't do POV switches anymore for the duration of the quest. Does that sound alright to you all?))

>>
((Well, things started off pretty late today so we'll be ending things off without many updates this time. But while I'm away I'll leave you all with a few questions.

Question 1: Would it be okay for me to switch perspectives to Tatsuya just this once? I know how it looks and I'll never consider doing something like this again since it'd mean effectively making the voting process null. I just wanna test the waters a bit since I think POVs can be a fun concept if done right. Plus, I think they're a lot of fun to write as well and they help me from getting burned out too much. But again, if you guys dislike it after I try it out or would rather not try it once, then I just won't do it.

Question 2: If you dislike POV shifts, what would I be able to do to make them more palatable for you all? Would you prefer it if they happened at a certain schedule (once every three/four days) or more rarely than that?))

>>
>>1804888
Well, the best time to do a POV shift is when shit is going down and the MC is out of it. They're palatable if done sparingly and serve a narrative purpose (looking at you, bladebound retainer)

The idea is that nobody really wants a session outside of the main characters shoes. A few posts, sure, but more than that and it detracts from the cohesiveness of the quest

We do a perspective shift so I can at least get the character’s background there for development purposes and THEN you guys can choose whether to stick around or not. This way, you guys can still at least see the basic set-up behind character arcs without devoting too much time away from the MC. At the same time, I’ll be able to get the ideas for characters out there and feel content even if we do end up switching back immediately.))

Your name is—

“Open the damn door, Ayako!”

Tatsuya Harada. You’re a 13 year old boy who recently became a genin after being something of a hotshot back in the academy. You were always something of a jack of all trades, but excelled especially at chakra control among all your peers and graduated top 5 in your entire class.

“Skank! Skank! Skank!”

You’ve got a sorta rocky home life and live only with your mother and elder sister. They’re at each other’s throats almost everyday no matter how hard you try to mediate. In fact, you’ve only just barely woken up from your sleep on the sofa. You don’t sleep in pajamas since you like being ready to scram at any second. You sit up and stretch your body a bit, doing your best to ignore the commotion going on behind you.

Your sister locked herself up in your room. It’s a small apartment, unfortunately, so you guys have been sharing both a bed and room for ages. All it means is that you have to sleep whenever those two banshees have their occasional screaming matches. You won’t get into specifics much but the arguments happen frequently enough that you’re usually out the door within the first five minutes of your morning. You can’t begin to explain how much you envy your best friend’s family.

Right now, your primary concern is getting them out of the crummy part of the village ASAP. What better way to do this than to strike it rich as a ninja? You like to think that you turned out because of this upbringing rather than in spite of it.

Still groggy, you walk through your apartment door without a word to your mother. They’ve got a door separating the two of them so it should be fine. It’s probably a good time to head out, anyway. Masahiro’s folks probably have your food done already. But there is always time for some fun on the way there…

>>1806911

You already have a job that’s good for a jack of all trades: being a ninja. It’s like killing two birds with one stone, really. You get cash by working as a ninja and the ladies will be all over you when they realize what a kickass shinobi you are. That’s what you call efficiency, if you do say so yourself.

>>1806788

Ah, yes, Operation Babe Hunt. You’ve been trying it out for ages now and are proud to report that you have at least a 60 percent success rate. Hitting on older women may or may not have brought it down tremendously, but you still think your chances are pretty high. Or as Hiro would probably say, “you’ve definitely got 3/5 (Charming) Charisma.” You don’t know why, but that sounds like something he would say. You should probably go visit him and give him a high five for last night—followed by a nice sock to the head for making you worry so much about him.

You leave your apartment with a dash and head deeper into the village. You spot a target—she actually seems kind of familiar. She’s a girl from the Akimichi clan who you’ve seen give Hiro a few nice looks back at the academy. You think her name was Chie or something? She might have a few too many...curves for your liking, but maybe Hiro likes those kinds of girls? You distinctly remember seeing some very strange stuff when he revealed his “stash” to you. The guy seems totally plain, but he’s a complete weirdo when it comes to these kind of things.

You figure you should give it a shot, that guy needs a girl in his life anyway. How should you approach her? (Note, your actions here could affect Hiro’s charisma score in the near future)

((Gotcha. We'll now return to our regularly scheduled programming. I'll be writing for two and a half more hours so let's make some progress. This might be my last time writing stuff up until I take a week or two off to reread the manga so let's make it count.))

Needless to say, it was a complete and utter failure. You kind of experienced a few uncharacteristic trips and falls here and there, maybe mentioned her weight a few times more than you usually would have. All the same, you definitely did not earn your bro any points. You’ve got an embarrassing red slap mark on your face now. You would...rather not be you right now. This seems more like something that would happen to Hiro, if you were to be completely honest. And thus…

>>1807163

You go back to being Masahiro standing outside of the examination room. Wow, that felt really weird. Why do you feel like more of a miserable failure than usual? Huh. Anyway, the vet said that it’d only take a few minutes to check out everything wrong with Bora but it’s already been at least half an hour. You’re starting to get really impatient. A few more minutes pass and the vet comes outside with Bora on hand. You figure it’s pentobarbital considering how knocked out he looks.

“So how is he?” You ask.

“He’ll be fine. See?” She held the dog up, showing off all the bandages surrounding his body. “He’s a tough one, most dogs wouldn’t survive half the things he’s been through. Just be sure to pay me my fee. I’ll put it on your tab until you get your money from that mission.”

“Uh...and how much would that fee be?”

“About 2500 ryō.”

“W-what? For a check up?”

“Of course! If you want an examination from a former medical shinobi, you’ll have to pay top dollar.” She pats you on the head with a clipboard she’s holding. “Besides, plenty vets around here charge more than twice my rate for stuff like this. You should be thankful!”

You aren’t even sure how much you’re getting paid for the mission. Usually, it'd be more than enough to pay for stuff like this, but the mission technically was to hand Bora back to the Inuzuka. The pay was originally going to be 5,000 dollars, but with Bora off their hands you wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be less than that. Not to mention the fact that you’ll be splitting it amongst 4 other people.

You think it’s a long shot, but maybe she has a few tasks here and there that you could do to pay off the fee.

“There any chance you’ve got some work I could do to just wipe my slate clean instead?” You ask and she rolls her eyes.

“Of course I do. But first—Hana, be a dear and get the lights for me, alright?” The receptionist nods her head and flips the light switch so that the entire clinic is wrapped in darkness. You can barely see anything until the vet uses a flashlight to shed light on her face. You immediately feel very, very unsettled. Clearly enjoying your look of discomfort, she smiles and starts speaking in a slow, melodramatic voice.

“Long ago, there was a sole golden flower hidden somewhere deep inside of Konoha. It is said to be a cure all flower capable of healing any illness from the commonest of colds to the worst of cancers. But there was one problem.” Her smile disappears and she frowns. A bead of sweat appears on the side of your head. “It is said to be hidden in a forgotten hole in the ground somewhere in the Forest of Death. But this is no ordinary hole, oh no no no, this hole is said to bring you to Hell itself. Monsters ready to tear you apart limb from limb, fallen humans with their flesh turned inside out ready to drag you down to the depths of Hell to join them in their eternal suffering. A world warped beyond belief where death lies at every corner—would you be willing to enter such a place for a mere 2,500 ryo?! If you would, then say so right now little man! Say so now so that I may laugh the heartiest laugh my body can muster!” Her voice sounds so shrill that you fear your ears might start bleeding.

“No! Alright, I’ll pay, I’ll pay!” The lights immediately switch back on and a calm look returns to the vet’s face.

“It’s settled, then.” She turns the flashlight off and gives you a thumbs up, though her voice sounds much like it did before. “Let this be a lesson: never try being a cheapskate when it comes to Akane Koike. Fee’s due in three days, got it?”

You nod and immediately rush out the door before she has the chance to give you a heart attack. You wonder if things could have turned out differently if you had more courage or charisma...

((No BBLolis for perspective reverters! Thankfully.))

The rest of the day is relatively uneventful. You work at the restaurant for a few hours after taking Bora back home and confirming that Tatsuya had in fact been hitting on a girl and was laying on the floor in shame after getting thoroughly smacked. Lucky for you, your little sisters were off to the academy by the time you returned and Bora was still unconscious by the time you returned. Exactly how many shots had that woman given him?

Anyway, by the time you’re done with your kitchen work for the day, you return to the Inuzuka Clan home as Kazuya requested. After asking for the boy, you are brought to a room that seems like it was made for discussing business with guests. You shift uncomfortably as you sit on your knees on the floor in front of the tiny chabudai.

“Oh, so you didn’t forget. You had me worried there for a sec, Glasses. Thought you were planning on ditching.” Kazuya enters the room, dressed in an elegant kimono for whatever reason which is the opposite of what you would expect an Inuzuka to be wearing. He gets on his knees in front of the table and squints his eyes at you. You look away to the side as he grills you down. “No matter what I can’t understand why that dog likes you so much. Don’t make me regret giving him to you, got it? If I find out that you’re an even bigger shithead than Sho there’ll be hell to pay! Got it?!” He yells, slamming his palms on the table.

“Y-y-yes sir! I got it, I got it!” You respond timidly.

“Good.” He calms down and crosses his arms. “Now, I’m here to help you train that dog of yours. Making sure it gets used to people is your job, but I can teach you how to teach it a few tricks.”

“You will? How come?”

“It’d be a damn shame if Bora doesn’t live up to his potential. He’s one of our own dogs so you can bet he’s got plenty of it. It’ll take a bit to train him to use one trick but you can bet your ass that it’ll be worth it in the end.” He slams a piece of paper on the floor and you fall on your back from how abrupt his movements are. “Choose one and only one trick and I’ll tell you how to teach it to Bora. These are the basics, so even an outsider like you should have no problem.”

The “Tricks” on the list include:
>Transformation, or teaching Bora the transformation technique.
>Sniff, or teaching Bora to trace back an item to its owner through scent alone.
>Halt, or stopping Bora from attacking someone on command.

“Uh, I think I’d wanna stop him from biting anyone he shouldn’t be.” Kazuya nods his head wisely.

“Smart move. It’s one of the easier tricks to teach.”

“I don’t think it really counts as a trick. It’s more me wanting him not to tear someone’s—”

“Do you want him to learn it or not?” Kazuya says impatiently, elbow on the table and face in hand.

“Yeah, sorry.” At that, Kazuya stands up from the table. He holds out the palm of his hand, telling you to wait right there. Moments later, he returns with a leash and a bag of rice crackers.

“Hold still.” He says simply as he ties the leash around your neck and places the bag of crackers just out of your reach. “Inuzuka dogs are the smartest around, so Bora should be quick to learn.”

“Learn what?” You ask nervously, trying to loosen the tightness of the leash.

“Well, try going for the bag of crackers.” You do so and immediately feel the leash pulling your neck back. Again, you fall backwards onto the floor with a loud slam. You close your eyes in pain and open them seconds after to confirm that Kazuya had really just done that. The difference in strength between you two was ridiculous—you felt like he could toss you around like a ragdoll if he wanted to. “Stop!”

“Huh, wasn’t I supposed to—” Kazuya nods his head and you once again reach out for the bag of crackers, this time more slowly. Once again, you hear a loud “Stop!” and he makes you fall on your back once again.

“Try it again.” Reluctantly, you extend a hand for the box of crackers. This time, all you hear is “Stop!” and your body freezes, your eyes tightening shut in fear. “See? Easy peasy.” Kazuya says as he undoes your leash. He opens the bag of crackers and forcefully shoves one into your mouth, petting you on the head soon thereafter.

You really aren’t sure how you’re supposed to feel about this.

“He should pick up on things fast if you work with him for a few hours every so often. Come back after and I’ll show you how the other tricks work. You can show yourself out.” You nod your head, still eating that cracker. It tasted good, though maybe not good enough to warrant the dignity you spent to get it.

You return to your room to find that Bora tore through all your belongings. From your sheets to your sandals to your bed—just about everything was in disarray. But you honestly can’t find the energy to care at the moment. Besides, you can’t possibly stay mad at Bora when he’s looking at you so excitedly. You can only sigh and collapse face first on your chewed out bed. Bora follows after you and leaps on the foot of your bed to rest.

So much has happened over the past few days that it feels surreal. You finally became a genin, got knocked out by your sensei, went on your first mission, learned that you have a real talent for throwing things, and got a dog on top of it. And it’s not just that. You feel like your experiences have been changing you for the better. You doubt that your parents or even Tatsuya believed that you would last this long or make this much progress, but you want to prove them wrong and make them proud.

For now, it’s time to enjoy some of the brief respite that you still have. You get the feeling that your life is going to be far more hectic from now on. Thus, you toss your glasses aside to a nearby desk and drift away to sleep.

End of Arc 1.

((And that about wraps it up for this thread. I’ll be off on break to reread Naruto for a bit and to catch up on other stuff I’ve neglected in favor of this. Sorry if the quality declined somewhat towards the end there, I’ve been having some trouble sleeping lately. But yeah, that’s about it for the introductory arc of the story. Expect something more plot heavy for the second arc when I return, but I really need to read up on everything before I feel confident QMing this some more. Catch you all later and hope you enjoyed.))

You don't need to enclose your ooc statements in parentheses but that's just me. *shrug*

Also Bora as a name sucks. Personally I want a revote but if you don't feel like it that's ok
