Welcome All, to Hunter x Hunter quest. This quest will take place in the Hunter x Hunter Universe and follow all the same rules and concepts as the original series.

You will step into the shoes of an aspiring hunter named Derrick Holums, you will control his actions and thoughts on this adventure to become a hunter and ensuring he lives long enough to make something of his (Extremely) dangerous career!

This quest uses 1d100 dice, the critical system(rolling a 100 will assure success will rolling a 1 will assure failure) and the perma-death system are are being used, so any failures are both costly and saddening to everyone involved.

Expect for me

Rolls will be decided by best of three unless a crit overrides it. and without further ado, let's go on an Adventure guys!

In the city of Yorknew, there lies a bar named drowned sorrow, This is the place you call home,It reeks of piss, barf, beer and a smell that resembles a mix of a rotting corpse and wet dog.It is by no measure a pleasant place to live, but it is better then living out in the streets waiting for the next knife or bullet to put you out your misery.

But it ain't all bad, You have friends here, you have family here, people take care of you and want the best for you, plus it is pretty exciting living round here. One time this guy got super drunk and ended up knocking 12 guys on their asses,he even threw one guy right out the window! You wonder sometimes where that guy went after the police came and shot him with some tranquilizers?

You work at this place as a pianist, you don't get paid, you do this to re-pay what the owner of the bar, Nubes Maxwell, has done for you. The old bastard works you day and night to keep this dirty sounding fancy, but your grateful to him, if it weren't for him you would some corpse in the gutter waiting for the rats to pick you clean.

However tonight is different, tonight is the last night you're gonna play for this place, today is January 6, the hunter exam begins tomorrow morning, you registered on December 12 and you have been saving up and training since. it is two hours before the first flight to Kukan'yu, takes off to where the Exam is taking place.

You put your all into your performance, right up until the very last patron leaves, once their all gone, you get up from your seat and head over to the bar.

you sit on a stool and lean forward, Nubes comes over to greet you."Well sir, what can I get you?we have the finest alcohol in the city,Anything to,make you forget about the past and help you move toward the future." Nubes says in a polite tone, he talks as if your a complete stranger, the old bastard just loved to do that, you decide to play along,"When has alcohol ever helped anyone move forward in life? Spare me the bullshit and pour me something light barkeep, I have an important flight to catch.".
"You be surprised how many people need a good drink to do anything with their lives, people give alcohol a bad rep just because a few idiots have done stupid things while under the influence." he replies while stirring up your drink,"Some of humanity's greatest inventions were thought up by drunken fools" he slides the drink over to you,"Oh is that so?name one invention a drunk man thought up." you take a sip of the drink,"More ways to stir Alcohol."

As you drink the beer, you quickly realize that this is just a glass of water with food coloring in it,"You trying to scam me barkeep?"
"No,you said it yourself, you have somewhere important to be right now, Derrick" his voice loses it's polite tone and takes on a more serious one,"This is your chance at a good life Derrick,Being a hunter means you can go anywhere, you'll have the money to clean up your mess of life and make something good out of it,but it won't be easy, many people die in the hunter Exams and even more after they get the job." he says, sounding legitimately concerned,"I didn't take you in because i needed a set of fancy fingers to play a piano for free, I wanted you to make something of your life, i can't have you screwing it for any reason"
"I know the risks,I'm not screwing around old man,I don't plan on coming home in a body-bag,but i also won't come home empty-handed. When i get back here, i'll be rich and proud, i'm going to re-pay you for every night you let me stay, every meal you gave me,i'll make sure to slap you in the face with every dollar i'm going to give you old man, so you know for sure your not dreaming", you raise your glass,"That's a promise, old man Maxwell"
He raises his glass to meet yours,"I'll be waiting for that wad a cash, aim for the left the cheek,my right one aches from stopping the last bar fight." you both share a laugh, and then you head up-stairs,pick up your stuff and head to the airport.

Yorknew city is big and pretty place, all you have to do is look up to see the tall hotels and beautiful skyline. It's filled with nice people who love hard work and put others before themselves. If you were a tourist who was staring at the city from a hill, then you would've taught that. The place is more dolled-up then a little girl in a beauty pageant and the judges are just as likely to take you back-stage to show you their "Magic-sticks".

The Mafia community runs the entire city, the city council are under their shiny shoes and the police force are completely under their control, the honest cops were stomped out and replaced with corrupt bastards, fattened up on cash and donuts.

but you were born here and have lived here for all your life,so even though this place hasn't done you any favors, you still feel bad seeing it all go by when as you drive towards the airport.

You borrowed Maxwell's car and are currently heading to the airport via the highway, you almost wanted to take the long way just to take in the sights just one more time, but with one hour left before takeoff, you decided to leave the Sunday drive for when you come back and can ride around in limo made from solid gold.

Ahhhhhh, you haven't even passed and you're already setting goals, is there anyone nearly as ambitious as you are? Maxwell was worried about you but clearly your going to be fine.

Your brains had been the pride of the bar, people would always consult you for everything and everyone wanted your help, your amazing memory and virtual library of information has saved your ass, time after time.

Hell, the whole reason you can even take this flight is because about three months ago, a businessman came in crying about how he was so screwed if he come up with plan for his construction project that would satisfy his bosses. You asked the guy if he would accept your help for 10% of whatever he made off the project.

The bastard must have been real desperate cause he accepted that deal right then and there, after that you spent the entire night drawing up and planning alk possible designs so by the morning the businessman had the perfect construction plan.

Needless to say, even now your raking in the Jenny,if you could kiss yourself you would(+10 to intelligence rolls), .As you continue to admire just how awesome you are, you finally reach the airport and catch your flight right on time.

The wait in transit is not long, the flights are on time for once in a blue moon, you had to wait about fifteen or so minutes, during which you see some strange people get on the same airship.

first, there was a girl with pink hair and steampunk googles that ran in like a heroin addict and looked just as excited too, with a constant smile on her face.

then some guy that looked like he had major daddy issues, dressed in all black with a frown on his face that would make that could make the Pillsbury dough boy sad.

after him came this dark-haired lady in a business suit who looks like she might have pushed one, maybe two guys off a bridge in-order to move her way up the command chain. And right after her came this woman that looked exactly her, suit and everything, expect she had red hair,"Must be twins..." you say to yourself.

everyone after that was of no particular note, expect there was this woman dressed up in a maid outfit and some red-haired guy in a trench coat following her. You finally get on board and head straight to your room where put down your stuff and hit the sheets. It's been a long day of packing for the trip so you try and get some shut eye as you prepare for the long day ahead of you.

Boy i sure am glad these thread take forever to die

As you spend the next hour or so asleep, you wake up to when you hear the sound of a radio static and notice that an intercom is starting up, an announcement?

The intercom begins to speak up, "Goodnight passengers,I am your captain for the evening, my name is Jesper Myerscough, I'm sorry if I've awoken any passengers this late at night but I have an important announcement"

Important announcement? you look over to the clock on the wall and see it is 1:30am. you checked the weather report before this, there are no storms or bad weather between here and Kukan'yu, there wasn't even any delays in the flight which proved the report to be true. They can't be announcing turbulence or having to stop the flight, you made sure there was no way that anything would stop you from getting to this Exam, be it fate or the thunderclouds above.

The announcer continues,"I'm here to info you there is a murderer on board this ship." he says in that neutral, bored voice every pilot has.

The hell? a murderer? you did see some really strange people get on the ship, but none really looked all that dangerous, the announcer keeps his message going, "This murderer has already killed two people on the ship, we advise that you stay in your rooms and don't unlock your door for anyone, we have yet to ascertain the murderer's appearance or sex, so it is best to...." The announcer dribbles on about security protocol in a voice that makes it hard to tell whether he wants to stay calm to ensure no panic among the passengers or he genuinely doesn't care that there is a murderer on board the ship. Knowing pilots, it's probably the latter

Well now you have no choice but to get up. You don't want to get stabbed in your sleep after all.

You would be more panicked, but one of the basic requirements of being a hunter is to not fear death because you're going to be doing the Charleston with the boney bitch everyday until one of you gets tired and boy has she got great stamina.

You quietly get up from bed and look towards your door, you run the situation through your head.

First, there is a murderer on board the ship: their current location, appearance and even sex is unknown. That mean't this person is skilled, they killed two people without alerting any other passengers to their presence.

Second, the person was using a close range weapon, you heard no gunshots nor any explosions, this mean't the person was probably using a blade or blunt weapon that they manged to sneak on board, more likely to be the former considering how quickly they killed the other two passengers.

Third and finally, the murderer is hiding among the passengers, you have only been asleep for an hour, yet the announcement started five minutes ago, this gives you a timeline, if you guesstimate a little, then the murders probably occurred thirty minutes after you fell asleep, the bodies were discovered ten minutes afterwards and it took the crew twenty more minutes to ascertain the situation and then finally make the announcement. This leaves only twenty minutes or so for the murderer to run and hide themselves among the other passengers.

You have very little info, but you can confirm three things, The murderer is a close range fighter, highly skilled and likely hiding in a place with more dense crowds are, but considering how late it is dinnertime must be winding down, that last fact is a bit shaky, so it might be safer to assume they are moving about trying to stay out of sight.

Your gonna have to make a choice, you have a feeling avoiding this guy is going to be hard, your going to have to find a way to locate this bastard and stop them or at-least find a way to avoid them. then you will have to go to the....

>Dining room: The best place to hide a tree is in a forest, the best place to hide a murderer is among their victims. if they are hiding in the crowds then this is the best place to look.
>the decks:If they are going to hide, why not go to the most boring places on the ship?
>pool:Boy these ships sure are fancy, they even have a pool to swim in for fun. this one is a stretch, but the murderer might be completely insane and just be going anywhere specific.
>Wander around the ship: Going to any specific location will get you ambushed and killed, best option is to just wander about the ship standing at the ready if they come.

>Time to check out the dining room

You decide that it would be best to check out the dining room first, even if the time is as late as it is,there is no reason why the murderer wouldn't at-least check out the dining hall to see if they could make up an alibi, they could say they just went out for a late night snack, the dinner tables are open until the end of the flight after-all. And if you turn up with nothing you can grab a bite yourself, the most you had up till now was a glass of weirdly colored water. With all that in mind and stomach, you head to the dining room.

You get up and head out of your room, the hallways still have their lights on, that classic velvet color that lines the wall fills your eyes but doesn't hurt them, it matches the modern wooden flooring that makes up the design for most of the airships hallways. It seems other passengers shared the same idea as you. people begin exiting their rooms, completely ignoring any of the pilots earlier commands, while there a few people who are still in their rooms, either still asleep even after learning about murderer aboard the ship or they've locked up their rooms tighter then Fort Knox in case Chucky comes knocking at the door.

You can assume that the people heading out are also aspiring hunters, going out based on their need for justice or survival. It's nice to you have potential allies and you won't be alone in facing against what might just be your death.

You head right, down the hall and stop at a set of double doors marked dining hall. You prepare yourself for the possibility of getting an axe to the face as you open the door. The doors part to reveal a beautiful room, the dining room looks like it would be better suited in a 5-star hotel, airships are expensive as hell but they make damn sure that the price was worth the struggle, the Trip from Yorknew and Kakun'yu is about a day long and was supposed to be your last taste of comfort before the hunter Exam and this murderous psychopath came in and ruined that.

You can feel your fear being replaced with rage as you begin to scan the room for possible suspects.

>rolled 1

Well damn, you don't notice anything. Maybe your lack of sleep is catching up to you. you look around the room and find nothing out of the ordinary.

Inside the dining hall there are five other people besides yourself, three who entered the room to investigate, you saw them enter so they couldn't have been hiding here beforehand, that means they aren't suspects.

Other then them, there is this rich-looking guy in a suit and sunglasses, he is just sitting at the table and eating, he occasionally looks up and stares at the people investigating but looks away whenever they stare back. You would've interrogated him, but he looks like an average passenger. The way he keeps staring at you is weird, but with a murderer on board, anyone would be suspicious of people suddenly entering the room.(No information gathered)

You feel a little disappointed that your search ended dead, at-least you can get some food to fill up your guts before the murderer rips'em out. With that in mind you head to the food table and pick up a steak with some kind of gold glazing on it that makes it shine as soon as you stick your knife in it. you're truly amazed by the golden spectacle, you almost don't want to eat it so you continue to admire that golden shine, Almost.

You were about to head to the nearby table, but you stop when you look to your side to see a woman staring at you.

You recognize this lady, the black short hair, the business suit, the intense, analytical stare. you made a joke once that she pushed her competitors off a bridge to move up, looking her in the eyes, your joke ain't so funny anymore....

Why is she staring at you? She speaks up,"That steak, that's a Sapi emas steak.", What?

she continues ,"In east Azia there's a cow that gains nutrition from the sun like a plant, it absorbs sunlight and stores it in it's skin, giving it a golden glow that can be as bright as a star, if you stare at it carelessly you can go blind, but their meat is both highly nutritious and replenishes stamina quickly so it is an expensive delicacy, this ship knows how to pick it's foods".

You've heard of those, Sapi emas, the golden cow. usually found in the southern region of the Kakin kingdom, you had no idea they looked like this in real life, you just picked it cause it looked good.

A better question is why is she talking to you all of sudden, she doesn't look like the type who starts talks to people because she wants to.

You need to ask her...
>Name:If your going to school someone on cow facts, you should at least give your name first!
>Inquire:This woman just started talking to you out of nowhere, she might give useful information, maybe even tell something about the killer.
>Impress: No one schools Mr.Holums! it may just be useless pride but you can't let her get the better of you in sheer knowledge!
>Ignore: What a weird chick, who comes up to someone and just starts babbling on about golden cows in Azia? probably best to just ignore her.

>Give a man a name
>Question her

Time to play detective, can't make any progress by just looking around for someone you don't even have description of.

Even the vaguest image would help, this random girl may just be able to give you some vital info that could catch the murderer. And if not you'll at-least get some sweet bovine facts.

You begin."Cool stuff, cowlady but I think we have more pressing matters at hand.". she recoils a little,"C-Cowlady?" "What do you expect me to call you when you introduce yourself like that? first things first, how about a name?".

She blushes and coughs,"My name is Rea, Rea Springfield. I guess starting off with random facts like that is a bit strange isn't it? I won't do it again.", hm? she is surprisingly polite, although her voice has a cold tone to it ,she gets embarrassed easily, that's cute.

She recovers and speaks up again,"Well if introductions are out of the way, then can i ask you question?"
"Go ahead"
"Do you think this might be a part of the hunter exam?"
"What?"
"I've done some reading, there were many times were the exam had tests before even arriving at the examination site in order to weed out the weak from the people who apply each year."

Really? you didn't even know that, this chick is savvier then she looks but that raises some questions, namely,"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you are an aspiring hunter as well, correct?"
"How you'd guess?"
"Because you picked the Sapi Emas steak, only a hunter would have an eye for that kind of food, especially in this situation."
Well she's not wrong but she might be overestimating your skills of observation. you press on regardless, "Okay I got that, But why are you telling ME this."
"If this is a test, then the in-order to pass it we must work together to stop this "Murderer's" actions, this will not be easy alone, i wish to make a deal with you, I will to share the info I have with you"
"And in exchange?"
"You become my bodyguard and protect me, you look far stronger then most of the people here and your observation skills are above average"
Once again she may be overestimating you, however this is your chance to gain proper info out of her.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal.....

>Sure: Fine then, you need info more then anything else, protecting a lady or two is of little cost.
>No: This lady feels kinda suspicious, if by some chance she is the murderer then she could be luring you into a trap.
>Question: she left way too much out of her explanation there, you best try and probe her for info you are going to make a deal with her.(Insert question for her)

>Questioning time

The deal is tempting but you know better then to jump into something without knowing who're your dealing with.
You can't keep standing in the food line talking, so you've got to get somewhere comfortable, you look around and see a table with two seats, perfect. "Alright Then Rea, i have a few questions if we are going to work together, we got to build up a sense of trust if we're going to work with each other." you say gesturing towards the table,"Well of course, what else is to be expected?" she doesn't even flinch at the prospect of being questioned, you can't tell if that means she has nothing to hide or is just really good at looking like she doesnt.

You sit down and begin to speak to her,"Okay first off, let's shoot the elephant in the room. How do you know i'm not the killer? And why should I trust you aren't the killer either? Either of us could be leading the other into a trap."
"There is no way to know for certain." she answers without even stopping to think,"There is nothing assuring you that i'm not the killer or that you aren't either. In this situation where anyone can be the killer, suspicion and mis-trust is rampant and anyone can betray you. That's why you have to put your trust in me,
Trust that i am not going to betray you and I have to trust you will not do the same to me."
"that sounds downright irrational, you expect me to blindly trust you?"
"This situation is irrational, in a ship full of strangers, sometimes you have to take a leap of fate and hope that there isn't spikes at the bottom."

She said all of that while looking you straight in the eye and not pausing even once. Killer or not, this woman is smooth.

"Well alright then." you say not sure how to respond,"I have one more question, How do I know that your info isn't false? you could feed me lies and lure us both into a trap."
"My information is accurate, from the moment I entered the airport, I have been keeping an eye on everyone of note on the ship, that includes you, I saw when you stared at me in transit, it's part of why i am talking to you now."
Damn that isn't creepy, what she has in brains, she lacks in people skills.

She keeps going," I also have information from the crew members who found the bodies. is all that good enough?"
More then enough, if she's telling the truth. even after all that she is still a little suspicious

What should you do....

>Agree:Alright, that's good enough for me
>Refuse: no, this deal isn't worth it.
>Keep questioning(Insert question)

So to sum it up she told us to trust her when we asked if she was the killer or not and she dodged the question when asking about the validity of her information.

She doesn't seem to trustworthy to me. I'd propose a test for accurate information. Ask a question that we could easily verify but would be rather obscure and one wouldn't know offhand.

So you want Derrick to ask her a question based on what little information he has? that might have worked, had you not rolled a 1 on the information check.
the only thing you could ask her is to verify whether the weapon was a blunt object or a sharp one and you are not even a 100% on that. You are desperate for info, but you don't have to work with her.

That wasn't good enough. All of her answers rely on pure blind faith, if you want to get anywhere here, your gonna have to get something concrete out of her.

It sucks that you have no real information that you could use to coax an answer out of her but hope is not lost. Even if you have no real info, you can seem like you do."I want proof, solid, real proof your info is accurate. Here's a question, was the murder weapon a Blade? or a Blunt object?"
"I imagined that you wouldn't be convinced so easily, i will prove the accuracy of my information." she reaches into her pockets and pulls something out, she drops them and unto the table and then you see two bloodied, slashed up corpses. "This was the couple who were attacked by the murderer, the attacker used a long blade with a sharpened edge and cut them down from their blind spots, skilled and quick, the killer left no trace of their own existence. I have more then than this, this should prove there is some validity to my information, you may check them if you like, to see if they are authentic."
"How did you get these pictures?"
"I'll tell you that after you take the deal, putting out anymore info would put me at a disadvantage"
That's true, fine then. Time to put this genius mind to work again.

The bodies have been brutalized, but not destroyed. the couple is a man and a woman, the woman in a short red dress, the man in a tuxedo, you saw these two in transit, they are most certainly a couple. They looked so happy when they were alive.

the wounds are deep but not excessive,There is an order to the wounds which gives away the nature of the killer. There are five slashes in total between the two of them.

Both had received a large slash to the back which dug into their spines and two slashes across their faces which make it hard to recognize who they were. The fifth and final slash reveals something interesting however. both had died next to each other, as if they were killed instantly without even seeing the killer, however there is a small slash across the woman's ankle, that means that she ran before the killer got her.

If you had to visualize what happened, then the killer ambushed this couple with a long blade and killed the man on the right first, a single slash to the back which dug into his spine, the killing blow. After that the woman ran away and the killer slashed at the back of her ankle and quickly delivered another slash to her back which killed her. after that he quickly picked up her body and moved her back to the original spot of the attack. Finally he slashed the faces of his victims to make sure they couldn't find their identities and then he escaped and went into to hiding.

they killed two people with only five attacks, as you expected the killer is skilled. These photos have brought new information to light, you've learned two new things about the killer.

First, the killer is methodical, their actions are calculated and planned ahead before movement, this confirms they aren't some axe-wielding manic, but rather an intelligent and calm person who never makes simple mistakes. This gives the killer a personality, not too useful but it's something.(New info gained:Killer's personality)

Other then that you've learned that the killer wields a long blade, about 60 to 70cm long considering the size of the back wounds. the killer's weapon was not found at the crime scene (As far as you know) so that means they either hid the blade in their own rooms or that they are carrying the blade on them, using self-defense as an excuse to lug around the murder weapon in open sight.(New info gained: The killer's weapon)

Well this was enlightening, however you had speculated all this beforehand, at the very least your speculation has been confirmed, but that bring something disturbing to light, Rea's personality matches that of the killer's.

As you think that, she speaks up,"That look in your eye tells me you can see that I am not lying when i say when my info is accurate", that is true, this is very hard to call fake, however this evidence is minimalist, you are going to need more. "If you just agree to be my bodyguard for the rest of the trip, then i will gladly share everything i know, if i give you anymore evidence then this, I will be put at a disadvantage in this deal and if we talk for too long, the killer may escape. Please give me a straight answer, will you protect me or not"

She makes makes a sweet argument but hard to swallow. that evidence is vital but is it really worth trusting a stranger? not to mention, her personality lines up the most with the killer's from your evaluation. "Maybe i phrased that wrong." ,"Hm?" you hum in confusion.

"Yes" you say after a moment of consideration,"I will put my trust in you, i will be your bodyguard", "I know this deal may seem unfavorable but i am genuinely glad that you would put your faith in me, a complete stranger"

"We're not strangers anymore." you stand up and look Rea right in the eye,"Huh?"
"Where I come from, when make a deal with someone, especially someone who could stab you in the back, It means a deeper level of trust then most people in the world have . We could both screw each over at any moment but we are putting our faith in each other that neither of us will." You stretch your hand out. "In my eyes, that makes us friends."

She blushes once again and looks down, "Friends....." she looks up once again and for a split second, your sure you saw a smile on her face. She quickly stands up and grabs your hand, a surprisingly strong grip,"I think you are moving far too quickly in my eyes, before we become friends, would you please tell me your name?"
"Derrick. Derrick Holums."
"Rea. Rea Springfield. I knew putting my faith in you would be the right choice, i'll be counting on your support Mr.Holums."

As you finish your hand shake, you head from the dining hall and into hallway to search for the killer as Rea explains all the information she has gathered.

"I already showed you photos of the body so you know the kind of threat we're dealing with. I obtained these photos from the crime scene itself. The murder occurred in the southern decks, there are cameras there, however there was no way for them to pick-up the crime as it happened."
"Why not?"
"There was a was a power-cut a little earlier. At 11:30, there was some kind of mal-function with the power cables ,20 minutes later they got the power back on, however they couldn't light up decks or get the cameras working. I believe that was the killer's doing. How did you not know about the outage?"
"I fell asleep around 11:00pm, so I didn't notice."
"I see. Well after the power outage the murder itself occurred at 11:45, the crew that found the bodies came 10 minutes after that to check on the deck and found the bodies. this was confirmed by the crew men themselves after i questioned them."
That matches up with your speculations about the time-frame, you have another question though "How did you get those photos of the bodies?"
"When I was interrogating the crew members i asked them to show me the bodies and told me no, then i fed them a lie that i was a local detective and they let me through."
"They didn't ask you for a badge?"
"Strangely enough, no, they just believed me on the spot and let me through, is everyone from Yorknew this trusting?"
No, your just way too intimating to doubt, so they didn't question you.

you continue "Okay anything else?"
"Yes, but this is just my own speculation. the murder took place on the decks which people barely visit, yet there was a couple wandering around waiting in dark? the murderer took 15 minutes to reach them, so they had ample time to escape, yet didn't."

True, if the timeline is as follows then they should have gone back to their rooms after the power-cut, yet they stayed and waited for their deaths to arrive.

"Strange. What of it?"
"I think this was staged."
(Continued)
>>
"What?" you stop your walk and face her, " what do you mean staged?". She stops and turns to face you as well, "do you remember when i said that might be a part of the hunter exam? The murder occurred at a late time when most people would be asleep or in their rooms relaxing, yet this couple was out and about, watching the stars after a power cut occurred, then the murderer ambushed them and killed the man swiftly and cleanly, the woman ran yet we didn't hear her scream even after seeing her partner die. After that, the killer runs away somewhere and has yet to appear again or commit another murder for an hour and a half now."
"That is very strange, but insane coincidences do happen. besides, if this was a test, what are they even testing for? investigative ability and intuition?"
"Maybe, but i think it's something else, i think their testing for social ability"
"What?"
"with a murderer on the loose in an environment of strangers trust is hard to find and even harder to keep. You even found it hard to trust me up to this point, however you still put your faith in me, despite the chance I might be the murderer. As you said, we have formed a bond deeper then most people by putting our lives in each other's hands, i'm sure in a real battlefield putting your faith in your allies to help and not betray you is hard but it is something you have to do to survive. So i think this is a test to seek out and find the murderer, not on your own, but as a team."

When she says it like that you can see why she is so certain that this is a test, however that doesn't mean it actually is. For this to be a part of the test, it would mean that they would have set this trap for every flight heading to kukan'yu, not even the hunter can pull that off. Right?

Irregardless you must push forward,"Hunter Exam or not, that means we still have to find the murderer. Do you have any idea where they are?"
"I do not know the full layout of the ship, but i do have a few guesses."
>>
You continue to move forward and discuss possible locations for where the murderer is hiding.

Rea begins,"From the southern decks there are three places they could have gone.". She brings up three fingers.

"First, Back to the rooms,he could have hid his weapon and locked up for the night looking like one of the passengers, however to reach the rooms would mean going to a populated area with a bloody blade and possible blood stains on their clothes, so that would have been difficult especially with the crew moving around." you did see a lot of locked doors when you headed outside, could the killer be behind one of them?

"Second: to the other decks, they could have headed to the second floor and wrapped around to another deck, where they are hiding in the darkness, he would have no chance to hide the bloodstains or the weapon doing that but it would be hard to guess which deck they hid in that case, making it the easiest place to hide, so i say this is the most likely option." It would be easier to slip past the guards and hide in the dark, rather then try and explain a bloody blade to everyone.

"Third: The pool, it's a bit of a stretch but they could hide in the pool area and wash their clothes and weapon, if someone were to interrupt them then they could claim to be swimming late at night and didn't hear the news." That is a stretch, you would have to trust that no one sticks around long enough to really question you about what you were doing.

"Those are more then likely the only places they could have gone in the ten minutes they had to escape. you make the choice Derrick."
"Do you really trust me to find the right location?"
"No, this way if we get it wrong, you would take all the blame and i get to make fun of you."
.....Your damn lucky you're cute, you think to yourself.

Anyway, you have another choice to make it seems, the best place to check out is.......

>The rooms:They could have sneaked through somehow, in that case it's best you start knocking on doors, before the murderer knocks on yours.
>The decks:If they hid there once, they will surely do it again, being a murderous psychopath doesn't make you any more creative.
>The pools: this one's a stretch, washing away all the blood would be nice but would it be worth all the people who come in the room at any time? worth a try at-least.

"Let's go to the decks." you tell Rea after thinking for a while,"I have a feeling that our killer isn't a very creative thinker, methodological people tend to do the same trick again and again if it works.", "Okay then let's move.", you waste no time and get moving to the nearby decks.

You head upstairs to the second floor and move forward to the northern deck, the second floor is where the captain and his crew work and control the ship. The only rooms up here are the janitor's closets, the crew's quarters and the captain's room, the killer could have hid in the janitor's closet, so you check it quickly and notice that is locked and no one is inside. You're sure that they have people watching the captain's room and the crew's quarters considering the situation. With that in mind you hurry past all the adjacent rooms and move straight down a hallway unto the northern deck. You make sure to walk silently but quickly to ensure the killer does not immediately notice you. You're looking for someone with a long blade as a weapon with a methodological and intelligent personality and most importantly there will be blood on their blade or clothes.

You exit through the door at the end of the hallway and are invited in by the rushing cool winds of the airship. As you exit out the door you see one man leaning on a railing, looking out to the beautiful sea below and shining moon above. the moon illuminates the area, since the lights are still off out here, your lucky it's a full moon out tonight.

You look at the man on the railing. He has black hair, is dressed in black and is about 5'8" to 5'9" in height. You can't see his face or weapon. you think you've seen this guy before....

You call out to him,"Hey!" he quickly turns to face you but doesn't get off the railing. Yeah you recognize that unchanging frown, he was that depressing looking guy you saw back in transit. as he turns to face you can see 10 yrs of screaming "fuck you dad!" and running back to his room all over his face, frowning that much must be some kind of medical condition. unhealthy levels of emo-ness aside you and Rea walk up to him, a smile on your face yo assure him you aren't hostile. Yet

"Sorry to bother this late at night, but can I ask you a few questions?" you say in a polite but forward tone. he looks confused but answers with a nod and looks back out to the sea, oh boy this one is going to be fun.....

What should you ask him first?

>Mind the axe

You ask him the most important question first,"Can you please tell me what your doing here at this hour? if you haven't heard, there is a killer on the loose who has been attacking people.". Without changing expression or position he speaks in low tone,"Yeah of course i heard, why do you think i'm out here. the killer attacked someone on the opposite deck, so i thought they would be here, hiding somewhere nearby but so far no one has even come to greet me, except you of course." he answers without pausing even once or showing even a hint of nervousness,"Does that mean your hunting the killer?"
"Yeah i am, what of it"
"Well just sitting out here staring broodily into the night is not going to help you notice them, we even managed to sneak up on you and we weren't being sneaky."
"Oh i noticed you, I just thought you weren't worth investigating so i ignored you."
You feel a tinge of anger, but it quickly goes down and you continue, "that's not safe, anyone could be the killer, what if i snuck up on you while you ignored me?"
"I seriously doubt that, the lady following you looks more like a killer then you."

The anger begins to re-build itself, what a snarky asshole! but you can't let rage get the better of you, you need a calm mind if you want a clear answer. he could be lying, you can check if you just word your questions the right way.First

"Okay then, it is clear that you are fully capable of defending yourself even if your slouched over like that, mind explaining that by the way?" you begin, trying to keep your cool. "I want to trick the killer into attacking me, when they see me with my guard down they'll be tempted to attack me."
"that is extremely risky,"
"I plan to be a hunter, my life is going to be risky."
Yet another aspiring hunter, that's surprising given the flight we're on.His personality seems to be risk-taking and straight-forward albeit a little sarcastic, doesn't match the killer's nature at all. "how long have you been out here?"
"Since the pilot's announcement, so about 20 to 30 minutes now?" that's not a lie, it's been about 33 minutes since the pilot's announcement, if he were the killer he wouldn't know about the announcements, since the power here isn't working, neither are the intercoms. But that raises another question, "You've been sitting here staring out into the sea for 30 minutes?"
"Hunters have to wait days in the same spot to capture prey, you need patience and skill ,things you seem to lack blondie."

You can swear you hear a tea pot going off in the distance, before you completely boil over Rea stand in front of you and begins to speak.

>That's all for tonight folks, your qm is very tired.
>>
Anddddddddddddddd i'm back, let's start things off right quick.
>>
Rea looks at the man intensely and speaks up, "Can you tell me exactly where you have been since the flight began?". He flinches a little but answers quickly" After I got through transit, i headed immediately to the dining room and ate for 20 minutes and headed back to my room where i stayed until i heard the announcement."
"Can you tell me the exact time when you entered the dining room?"
"Around 10:00, what of it?"
"And you left 20 minutes later?"
"Yes, what about it? why are you so interested in my dining schedule? want me to tell you what i ate too?" he asks sarcastically, 'No, that will not be necessary. Rather I would like to know why you are lying to me."

He freezes for a moment and finally turns to look Rea straight in the eye.

Huh? you stagger slightly at her accusation, he's lying? you could hear nothing that sounded particularly suspicious in his explanation, he takes a moment to speak up again, "...you could at-least give me your name if your going to call me a liar."
"Only if you do so first."
"Noell Cromwell"
"Noell, you're story was truthful until you said were you went after leaving the dining. I saw as you exited the dining hall, you did not head right towards the rooms, rather you headed left, towards the southern deck."

there is no change in his expression, however his posture has changed, he isn't relaxed anymore, now he was standing at attention. "Are you sure it wasn't some other guy? there were a lot of people in the dining hall at the time, you could be mistaken." he says looking her straight in the eye matching her intense look, "I am certain that it was you, your look is very distinct, very few people on this flight were wearing all black. if that is still not enough then there should be a brown stain on your left shoulder." he puts his hand on his shoulder and his eyes open wide for a moment, "it's hard to see in the darkness, but a waitress bumped into you in the dining room, she apologized quite loudly for it, so it was hard to miss." ,Noell pauses again, a little longer this time, "Okay, yes i headed for the southern deck before going back to the rooms, so what? I didn't think it was worth mentioning so I skipped it."
"Can you tell me how long you stayed at the southern deck before leaving?"
"Roughly 15 minutes?"
"That's another lie, Noell."
"How can you tell?"
"Because of you're standing here."
"Huh?" he says showing genuine confusion for the first time? " What does that mean?"
"Why did you come to the opposite deck first? the public announcement said that there was killer on the loose and that they had killed two people, but it never specified where the murder took place, yet you came here immediately after the announcement because you knew the killer attacked their victims on the opposite deck."

Noell stands up straight, getting off the railings to face the both of you directly for the first time since you started talking to him. You can't believe you didn't notice that inconsistency until now, wait no, it is not that you didn't notice fast enough, it more like Rea just noticed it faster. She deduced the failure in logic from the first moment it appeared and was waiting for you to make him feel safe enough to catch him in a lie.

There is a moment of tense silence while the two are staring each other and finally, Rea speaks again, "If i had to guess. Then when you went to the southern deck you stayed there about an about and a half, until the power was cut." Noell continues his silence as Rea explains, " When the power cut out, that's when the murdered couple headed towards you, a mere ten minutes before their deaths.", that is true, if he stayed until the power went out then he would have to been in the same area as the murdered couple, the path to the southern deck from the dining hall is only takes about 5 minutes, to reach at normal walking speed, even longer if you're wandering in the dark, even if he left as soon as the power went out , then he would have to have run into them along the way, does that mean that Noell is the killer? Noell looks down and then speaks,"Do you believe i'm the the murderer?" he says in an almost apologetic tone.
"No. No i do not"

"What!?" you and Noell cannot contain your surprise as Rea states that Noell is not the murderer, you start, "Didn't you just prove that he met the victims as they were walking down the hall? if he was the only one there, then that means he's the killer right?"
"That's what's wrong Derrick."
"What?"
"He wasn't the only one who was walking with the couple at that time.If you were really the killer you wouldn't be standing here right now"
Suddenly it dawns on you, what Rea has been trying to find out this whole time. "Are you saying that Noell saw the killer?"
"Correct"

For the first time, a drop of sweat lands off Noell's face, Rea continues, "When you headed down the hall back towards the rooms, you passed the couple in the dark, you probably thought it was weird for them to be wandering about in the darkness and not heading back to their rooms but you went ahead anyway, that when you them, the killer. You didn't know it was the killer of course but they were also heading towards the deck, following behind the couple in the dark. You must of thought it all very strange but continued onwards to your room anyway. Then when the announcement came on at 1:30am, you immediately realized the grave mistake you had made and rushed to the opposite deck, waiting for the killer to attack you. that is why you are standing her despite not hearing about the murdered couple's location."

Noell looks up towards the moon and then looks forward, right into Rea's eyes, "What is your name?"
"Rea springfield."
"Rea, you're correct. I did see the killer."
>>

Probably felt responsible since he saw the killer but didn't do anything. Kinda like Spider-Man.

I'm guessing this murder is actually part of the test itself, and he's an examiner.

>Derrick is a nice guy

"Why did you withhold that information? you knew there was no way either of us could be the killer, so why?
Noell laughs weakly to himself and speaks, "I don't care for human lives. I don't understand the kind of people who go out there, risking their lives and hurting themselves for a bunch of random strangers. People always say that you should care about yourself first and others second, but call you selfish when you prioritize your survival over others, it's pure hypocrisy. That doesn't mean that i think those kinds of people are bad however, quite the opposite, i think their admirable , how do you put yourself out there to help others at the cost to yourself with no real rewards? so i decided to figure it out."
"Is that why you didn't tell anyone you saw the murderer? because you wanted to be a hero?"
"I didn't want to change who was and become someone else but i also wanted to find out what it's like to be a selfless hero, so i made rule for myself, 'help everyone you know, whether they be enemy or friend, stranger or family', if i could of have helped those two, yet i still failed too, even when i knew that something was wrong. So i decided to do what a hero would and fight the killer alone and save everyone."

That sounds utterly insane, even if his motives are good, his reasoning and perception are completely warped But instead of mentioning that, you ask a more pressing question, "that still doesn't explain why you didn't tell everyone what the killer looked like, that would save more lives then this right?"

He looks over confused at your logic, "then i wouldn't be a hero, heroes can't take credit for their actions, they fight in secret because gaining fame for their actions isn't heroic. So the best possible option would've been to take down the killer without letting anyone know it was me. That's why i kept it a secret."
"Why would you think that? Do you know how many people could've get hurt by that decision."
"A man i hate once told me that all heroes fight for fame and money, that there are no heroes in this world." he looks you right in the eye and says, "I aim to prove him wrong."

You recoil back for a second but quickly recover. His ideals are warped and disturbing and maybe even a little dangerous. However he isn't outwardly threatening and he is technically trying to help people but even then something feels wrong with him, you can't shake this feeling. You're not talking to a person, you feel like your talking to some kind of creature impersonating a person.

Well you drop that feeling for now and focus on the matters at hand, "So you know what the killer actually looks like? describe them." he speaks up, "the hallway was dark, so i couldn't see everything but i remember his distinctive features. the killer is male, very tall, probably 6'2" to 6'3", he wore a green overcoat and had on sunglasses and had black hair.".

That was very descriptive, now you know just what kind of asshole your dealing with, "Do you have anything else to say?"
"Sorry no, it was dark so i couldn't see everything, everything else i said is a fact"
"Are they really?" Rea quickly interjects.
"Are you suspecting me again?"
"No, i just want to confirm you are certain of these facts and that you have nothing else to hide from us." she says this giving him that same intense look of her's, he responds with looking at her with honest eyes, "I earnestly have nothing else, i don't know his location or his weapon or even his face. All i know is that he attacked the couple on the deck and what he looked like"
"What about the couple's appearance? their faces were slashed and hard to tell exactly what they looked like." Rea asks quickly, "Huh? well there were two of them, a man and a woman, one was in a tuxedo and the other in a short red dress, the woman was 5'8" and the man was 5"9, the woman was blonde while the man had brown hair, couldn't tell you about their faces"

"Nothing else?" you ask, just to make sure. he takes a moment to think, "they were both really happy."
"What?"
"Even though the lights went out, they looked like they just danced their way out of a great party, they sounded giddy and were jumping around and everything."
"Huh......?" well that's strange. better make note of that.

>Time to take a swim in the sea of death

"Well thanks for telling the truth, now we're going to go out and deal with the problem at it's core, let' go Rea" you say turning your back and heading towards the door, Rea runs up to catch up to you, "Are you sure you don't want to take him with us? he seems like he knows his way around a weapon."
"Didn't you hear that explanation of his? clearly he doesn't want the spotlight in this, besides we're running out of time, it's roughly 2:40 am, it's only 2 or so hours before the sun rises, i have a feeling that if we let the sun rise on us then catching the killer will become impossible."

Rea looks disappointed for a moment but quickly recovers and says, "I guess your right."
"Don't look so down, something tells me that this won't be the last time we see that guy, he has something about him that's different then other people." you turn back and look at Noell and he looks back at you, a slient exchange of understanding ensues and you turn back and head through the door.

>New bond formed: Noell Cromwell

After that the two of you rush from the deck, back into the second floor and head back down to the first floor, you go down the same path as dining hall but this time take a left at the adjacent hallway . This leads to another set of double doors which you open to reveal the pool.

The pool is large and has a skylight which let in sweet moonlight, however the lights aren't on. "Hey Rea, i thought there was power he-" you are quickly cut off as Rea puts a finger to you lips and looks you in the eye, you immediately realize the mistake you made and rush back to the door and go quiet.

Rea whispers, "The only places with the lights off are the decks, the pool should have it's lights fully functioning. That means someone switched them off." you keep your head low and your eyes focused, this is it, this is where the killer is hiding.

"I'm going to switch the lights on, you will have to tell me where he is and warn me if he comes at me" Rea says, quickly coming up with a plan, you agree with a nod and begin to focus yourself.

You're finally confronting him, the killer. The murderous bastard whose been a pain in your side for the last 2 hours! (Though it feels like it's been longer then that.....)

You can't let your guard down, you know that this bastard is skilled and wields a long blade. Not only does he have a distance advantage over you, he is also attacking in the dark which he seems to be really fond of.

You can't use your eyes, you have to use your ears, you focus your hearing as you crouch down, ready to attack anything that enters your effective range. You wish you brought your weapon with you but that would've made people suspicious, so your fist will have to work.

You listen to your surroundings. aside from Rea's footsteps you can't hear anything else, Rea is wandering in the dark looking for a light switch so she is grabbing along the wall and searching. Every second that passes feels like 10, eventually Rea's footsteps stop, has she found the light swtich?

Suddenly you hear footsteps again, are those Rea's? they come in your direction, you tense up and ready yourself a possible attack.

Step whose footsteps are those? Step are they killer's, are they Rea's? Step No way, their too heavy to be Rea's this must be the killer and he's coming your way.

Step You tense every muscle in your body, you will have to dodge his first slash and attack him before he does his next, the battle will end in one strike either way, if you fuck up you're dead.

Step you can't die! you have too many promises to fufill, too many people you would let down, so you won't day today, Nubes is at home waiting for you.

Step Come at me you scum! I'll put you in a hole along with the other two you murdered, asshole! Stop

What? he stopped all of a sudden. whoosh! you hear something like jumping, he's going to come at you from above!? wait no! "REA, GET AWAY FROM THERE!!" you shout as you realize his plan.

Rea jumps away as you hear a sword cutting through the air, she immediately runs back to you and crouch beside you and both move away from the door towards the end of the pool, Rea speaks up "Well done, a second later and my death would have been assured."
"I'm just glad you reacted so quickly, did you find the light switch?"
"Yes, there was a power box, i couldn't see well but i switched on all the off power swtiches before he attacked me."
As she says that the lights begin to turn on overhead, the whole room is now illuminated in light and you can see the killer clearly now.

As the lights come back on, you see a man in a crouched position with a green overcoat. he stands up and you can see he is very tall, 6'3", standing up you see his black buzz-cut hair and a long blade in his left hand. Matches every feature that Noell gave you perfectly.

He slowly turns around and you see his face, a never ending ten-yard stare in his eyes, he looks at you with a look of annoyance and killing intent. he stares at you sliently for a while then he begins to slowly moves towards the edge of the pool, he speaks up, "Impressive, your sense of hearing and ability to figure out my attack shows a great level of combat capability, you saved both yourself and your friend from a deadly strike."

He stands at the water's edge on the opposite end of the pool and stares at you and Rea, "You are the first to find me and survive my ambush, the last couple of people I attacked couldn't even figure out that was hiding here until it was too late." he brings the long blade over his shoulder and brings a foot on the diving platform, "No one here has put up a good fight, so i'm a little excited to know people like you are on board this ship. you should prove to be a good fight."
You feel your anger building up,"You absolute scumbag, do you find killing people fun!"
"Everyone's got a hobby! some people make puppets out of corpses, i think mine is pretty tame compared to those psychopaths."
You don't extremely angry often but when assholes like this show up, you tend to get reckless and violent, you walk up to the water's edge and ask him a question, "You piece of fucking scum. What does human life
mean to you?"
"Pointless question. Nothing, people kill people everyday and justify under a good cause, i'm
just honest to my feelings, i kill because i want to, no other reason."
"You insufferable bastard, do innocent lives mean nothing to you."
"This airship is full of people who just want to become hunters to gain wealth and the right to hurt people for fun, calling them innocent is a bit wrong, unlike them who lie and come up with 'just causes' for getting the job, i'm just honest."

You end your conversation there, all the fear and caution is being replaced Hate and desire to kill, Scum like this don't deserve to be persuaded by your words, instead you'll make him bleed with your fists.

You glare at him and clench your fists, "That's right, words aren't needed, humans are self-satisfying creatures, we don't need a reason to rip each apart!" He shouts with a happy-edge to his voice, you ready yourself to end this murderous bastard.

The killer jumps from the diving platform, his legs are in-humanly strong and launch him into the air, crossing the entirety of the pool in a single leap. He grabs his blade with both hands and brings his blade and shouts, "DO YOU WANT JUSTICE, YOU WANT PEACE FOR THIS SHIP!! WELL! ANSWER ME!"

"Nah" you say calmly.
"i just want to kill you."

Do we know about Nen? What's our weapon? Is Rhea arming up? what is she doing? how much noise are we making?
>>

You just asked every question is in one post my dude, nice.

>Nen
No, Derrick has no knowledge of Nen, we are starting this out the same way as the orginal hunter x hunter.
>Weapon
You'll see next thread, i have everything planned out anon, don't worry
>Rea's status
She is not a fighter, she's the thinker type who can't fight too well, she physically capable and can survive harsh circumstances but there's a reason why she wants a bodyguard .
>What's she doing
Watching the bloody spectacle while waiting for her chance to do something, she is thinking ten steps ahead.
>How noisy is this
The walls are soundproof, a few shouts and slashes aren't going to alert anyone, good thinking though anon.
