"CHAAARGE!" One of the generals at the back of the formation yells.

Slowly, the cavalry seems to close in on Atlas. Those who get to him first are completely knocked out with gentle and fair movements from the monster of a man. He clearly doesn't seem to be paying much mind to the tiny soldiers as they charge him with sticks and swords.

His focus is still fixed on you, and he's smiling.

You are Jack Albator, impromptu general, magnificent fighter, and you appear to have a fan. Despite jumping back into the ranks of your soldiers to maximize your energy; Atlas doesn't seem the least bit deterred. Your defensive maneuver just added more targets between him and you.
That wasn't what you expected, to say the least. You thought that maybe the soldiers could box him in and then you could move in for the kill when he was having to deal with lots of little problems. Now you see that it's completely the opposite; the only little problem he has right now is you.

He easily swats away the small groups of soldiers who step forward to oppose him. Slowly, he walks through entire crowds of people; wading through them like water.
This can't keep going. It's time to change tactics.

"Yuuki, Dorje!" You call to two other nearby heroes, you have a plan. "To me! We're taking him head-on!"
"We're WHAT?!" Yuuki immediately stops at your suggestion.

"Got it!" Dorje leaps away from his group and lands beside you.
"On three!" You yell.

"Hey, wait! What's the plan?!" Yuuki doesn't seem to get that you never had one.
"Three!" You yell. You and Dorje sail over the soldiers out in front, and Yuuki hesitantly follows behind.

Atlas swats away a small shield formation that tried to poke them with their spears. Which may have worked on someone a quarter of his size.

You land near Atlas, and he immediately turns away from the cat soldier he has hoisted above his head. He unceremoniously tosses him away to focus all of his attention on you.
He's also grinning. A very toothy grin. A very big grin.

>Yuuki! Dorje! Ice+Ground!
>Start your assault with some swashbuckling! You have weapons and he only has fists!
>Three-point attack, let Yuuki and Dorje surround him on his other side.
>Just throw some magic at him and see what sticks!
>Other courageous battle plans?

"Dorje! Target the ground right under Atlas, make it sandy!"
"Yes!"

He slams the ground with his palms, and a wave of energy spreads across the dirt before settling under Atlas.
Right behind Dorje's sand; you launch a considerable wave of water. The aqua-blue burst of magic settles at Atlas' feet.

Like a rock, his lower-half plunges into the makeshift quicksand.
"Yuuki-"

You didn't even have to tell her. Her spear has already thrown a bolt of blue straight at the behemoth of a man.
The quicksand quickly morphs into quick-ice! His entire lower-half encased in a prison of chilled mud.

If there were any normal person, that would be the match right there. But-
"Excellent, Jack!" Atlas seems to have ignored the fact that he's up to his shoulders in ice. "This is what I wanted! The kind of teamwork that I saw from you back in the northern lands!"

Slowly, the ice-lake he's encased in starts to glow.
"If you three continue to work together like this, I'm sure you'll make a fine hero team, one day!"

Oh no.
"YUUKI! DORJE! QUICK! HIT HIM WHILE WE CAN!"

You draw your cutlass and close the distance on him. The other two have quickly followed your lead!

Immediately, the glowing aura below Atlas erupts into a bright-red hue. The ice holding the mud together melts, and Atlas effortlessly hops out of the quicksand!

He grabs Dorje's fist with his hand, and even somehow grabs your cutlass with his teeth! Yuuki manages several clean belows before Atlas uses some kind of wind magic to give himself some space.
All three of you charge back at him, but he's ready for you this time. He punches you in the gut before your cutlass can connect, Yuuki once again gets some clean hits, but you're not sure how much good they're doing, and Dorje- Well.
He's punching Atlas with all his might, but doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. Dorje's third and most powerful punch connects, and staggers Atlas slightly. Atlas picks him up by the collar of his shirt and gently tosses him aside. He collides with Yuuki, and she quickly stands him back up.
Well, at least he tried.

So, what's your next move?

A question comes to mind that you're sure has been asked more than once before in history.

Is this guy even human?

It's a difficult question to ponder as he approaches you. The same wild smile glaring across his lips that you saw when he burst from his mud prison. You think he's going to use this opportunity to deliver a much-anticipated counterattack.

Clearly, this isn't working. Force won't be enough to knock down this behemoth. You'll need to fight smarter, not harder.
Quickly, you hop away from Atlas and land next to Yuuki and Dorje.

His weak spot seems to be magic, right? While he seems to be a monster that knows most of the elements; he seems to have taken a jack-of-all-trades approach. Maybe that means he's not quite as strong at any single element.

So, of course, the solution is magic. More magic, more magic, more magic!

"Yuuki, Dorje, we need to fighter smarter this time!"

You try grabbing onto the blood in Atlas' veins, but his pure physical strength far exceeds your magical strength. Dorje tries ground once again, and Yuuki quickly freezes it into a layer of permafrost. Again, while it slows him down, it's nothing he can't cook his way out of.

Trying to get back into punching range results in the usual happening. He completely shrugs it off and goes in for more tosses and throws.

This isn't working.

"Back, Back back back, let's get more muscle, here!"

You, Yuuki, and Dorje hop away from Atlas' grasp. You land swiftly next to Cody.

"Ye gonna help 'er just stand there?!" You cough as you land next to the guy who seems to not have a care in the world.

"I don't know, man. You were putting on such a show that I thought to just stay out of it. See how things play out, and all." Cody smiles, but you're not laughing.
"Yar, that's great, but it's time te give me a hand here. What'd ye have in mind?"

"Well, I was thinking instead of tryin' to bash your head against that wall, we instead drag him back into the traps and fight him there. There's one not too far away."

>Alright, let's use the traps.
>We need to weaken him a bit more, so they catch 'em off guard.

"We need to weaken 'im a bit more." You grit your teeth as he slams into a row of soldiers, and sends them flying. "Aye just tried several magic attacks, and he doesn't seem worse fer the wear. Ye think yer traps can do more damage?"

"No, but I do think they might slow him down a bit more. Jack, my thought is that while he's very strong, he isn't very bright. It might take him a minute to figure out what the trap is about. While that's happening, we whip the shit out of him."

Cody doesn't seem to be above fighting dirty, but then again; neither are you.

"Alright, let's do it. Whar we begin?" Ugh, he just rammed down another row of soldiers. Tiny puffballs fly in every direction.

"Try to lead him back here. I'll pull this unit back behind the trap. If he needs help, then give him a little 'push' into it. You'll know what it looks like when you see it."
"Aye, gotcha."

You hop back over to Yuuki. She seems a little shell-shocked watching Atlas just chew through Biscotti's ranks. Her mouth is agape, and her eyes continue to focus on the beast of a man.

"Yuuki." You shake her, but nobody's home. "YUUKI! WAKE UP SOLDIER!"
"Ah uh, huh?!"

"Aye, we're goin' back in."
"I hope you have a plan this time!" she states, rather angrily.

"Aye, have a plan, no promises that ye'll like it."
"Well that's at least something. What's the plan?"

"We're gonna lead Atlas around a bit. Ye got any good ranged attacks?"
"A few, why?"

"We're gonna drag him around. Ice the ground if ye have to. Just make him come toward me."
"I- I can do that."

"Great, go get Dorje and flank him. Aye'll get his attention."

Yuuki quickly signals for Dorje and sets off. You head straight through the ranks and toward the awaiting opponent.
Quickly, you feel yourself taking a swig from the flask in your pocket. You shouldn't drink all of it, though. You get the feeling that you're only just starting to need it.

"Good hit, Lad!" Atlas, even while creaming the front row, is STILL giving tips and advice to the soldiers he's fighting! "-But you need to put more pressure into that! Try it again!"

How can such a crazy person be so.. strangely outward? You're not going to argue that he isn't completely insane, but there are semblances of sanity between those eyes of his.
Well, here goes nothing.
"HEY ATLAS!" You shout over the roar of the army. "IT'S TIME FER THE MAIN COURSE, ATLAS!"

You fire several shots from your pistol. Each one seems to embed itself in his body and fizzle out.
Yikes.

He slowly turns toward you, and his smile comes back. You need a better distraction than this, but how?

>Keep the poking from range going.
>Throw water at him. He might think you're being serious if you're using magic.

So failing that, just water hurricane him to where we want him. I'm sure he can counter it but might not right away.

You're a good ways from the trap that Cody has planned. You need to think of a way to draw him closer.

"HEY ATLAS!" You shout at him, but he seems to not want to approach too closely. Is he aware that something's up? He seems to notice Dorje and Yuuki at his flank. Slowly, he starts to turn toward Yuuki.

The way Yuuki's face turns from determined to slightly worried is almost comical if it weren't so justified.

"ATLAS-" Yeah, he's not listening. It's time to try something a little more concrete to get his attention.

You focus on something that may be able to take Atlas' attention off poor Yuuki and get him to focus on you. With a hoist, you pull some water from the ground and let it ball into your hand.
Quickly, you throw the globe of icey water in his direction. It splashes against his face, and he quickly turns to look at you.

"'AYE GOT ANOTHER COMIN' FER YE, ATLAS!" You take the flask out of your pocket, it's time for a plan.

He puts his hand up and simply turns the next ball you throw at him into ice. It stops in mid-air and shatters on the ground. Then, you throw another, and another, and another.

All the while, he's not aware that you're loading your pistol with a very special shot.
Quite literally, a shot.

The small ball of alcohol settles into the chamber, and you use manipulation to keep it in its solid-state. Quickly, you throw another globe of water at him, and then draw and shoot your pistol!

He successfully deflects the water, but the pistol shot goes straight past his guard- And up his nose!

Atlas immediately stops, and starts coughing and wheezing. You forgot, that was the strong stuff that you loaded up with this morning. For someone that doesn't drink often, that must feel like getting kicked by a rather large animal.

He grasps at his mouth, and covers it tight. Slowly, he continues to march toward you!
You start to back up while shooting him with a combination of alcohol, water, and very strong words.

Yuuki and Dorje follow close behind him. You don't think they know exactly where you're leading him.
You look right to see Cody standing in just the right spot. He takes out his gun, and shoots right below Atlas' ankle.

FWOOSH!

A snapping crack fills the air as some kind of rope snaps tight around Atlas! The rope is soaked in something, but you can't quite tell what it is.
Wait.

It's wax?

Cody, taking this opportunity, pours something onto the rope, and lets it slide down the wax-covered bindings. The heck is it?
Quickly, he takes his cigarette and mashes it agains the wax. A line of fire zips down the rope and covers Atlas!

That has to be it. There's no way Atlas can escape from that. His hands are tied, and he's on fire.

Except, if victory is so certain, why is Atlas smiling as wide as he is?

Yeah it's time to command them to unload with all the power they have. Luckily neither are based on melee at all, and shouldn't put out the flames currently on him.

...I did briefly imagine Louise zapping onto him and doing a point blank true lighting bolt, but this isn't the time.

Second. While I imagine Cody "might" have poured some old Greek Fire on Atlas, since he is tricky like that, I still don't want to douse and freeze Atlas just to test that theory.

Has Cody ever used magic? Wasn't he wind? Seems like a loss of power and versatility for the team.

...But I wouldn't be surprised if he's been keeping up a roaring windstorm in the atmosphere that no one can see just to increase his power on the sly.

Why is he smiling?
Why?

This is hardly a laughing situation. He's stuck in a lasso-trap, his arms are bound, and he's on fire. Hardly a laughing matter if you happen to be the person who is tied up and on fire.

Maybe this is his plan? Try to intimidate you so he can formulate an escape before you have a chance to take advantage of this? Well, you're not going to let a good trap go to waste.

"EVERYONE! LAY INTO 'EM, NOW! DO IT! ALL OF YE'S"

The first thing you feel is every hair stand up on your neck as a bolt of lightning passes slightly overhead. You should have maybe made it clear to Louise to not include you in the line of fire if she was going to unload. That's not quite as terrifying as the very visible and very hot flame which follows closely behind it. Your skin crawls as the immense heat flies like a bolt and encases Atlas fully.

Yuuki, seeing the conflagration of lightning and fire; wisely decides not to cast ice at Atlas. Dorje throws black stones which appear to glisten in the light.
You, also not wanting to throw water on a burning opponent, take out your pistol and have at it! Cody dumps whatever ammo he has into Atlas as well.

That has to be it, there's no way a man can survive all of that.
Atlas appears consumed by all the conflicting projectiles and attacks. His entire form practically explodes as the torrent of fire subsides. In its place remains a hole of which smoulders with embers and bellows with smoke.

What the..

Did you kill him? Did you just... kill Atlas?
Yuuki stops, and her face turns pale. Dorje seems much less worried, but has instead knelt down to the ground and started listening intently.

Wait, you're hearing something.

Smash.
Smash smash smash.
Crunch smash smash smash pound pound boom BOOM!
Something is nearby, and it's coming right this way!

You look down, and realize: that 'something' is right below your feet!

Slowly, the ground below your shoes starts to bulge into a noticable mount of dirt. The pounding and the crashing, is getting louder!

Oh shit.

"YARGH SHIT!" You yell as your feet lift you from the ground and carry you far, far away from where you're standing.
You concentrate on your hand, and think of the largest damn tidal wave you can imagine. A wave that could sink nations and bring galleons to their knees.

FRWOOSH!

A torrent of water erupts from the ground you were once standing on. It quickly forms into a puddle, but could easily become a lake if you kept at it!
"LOUISE! ZAP IT! ZAP THE WATER!" You yell just before you land. You hope the little lightning bug gets the hint of what you're trying to do.

Sure enough, a yellow bolt of energy sails over the soldiers and strikes the tiny pond you've created. It starts to dance and flicker with electricity as blue sparks hum along the ground. Instinctively, the soldiers keep their distance.
"GOOD JOB, KEEP AT IT" you shout. Louise puts a little more power behind it, and that causes her lightning bolt to glow a strange orange color. Yikes, that is scary.

Suddenly, there's a crack.
All of the electricity in the pond seems to be.. leaking out? How is that possible?

It converges into a single hole of which seems to be expanding. The water starts to drain through the hole in the ground, and slowly a figure arises out of it.

Atlas emerges from his man-made cave holding some kind of metal object. A spear? Did he take a spear from one of the soldiers?

Either ways, all of Louise's lightning is seemingly drawn to it. It sucks up her lightning bolt like a straw, and glows a fantastic shade of red as steam rolls off of it. Atlas stands in the center of the dried-up pond holding the glowing iron bar with a smile.

"Impressive, Jack. I have to admit, that was quite the clever move on your part."

Louise, clearly noticing that the metal staff is eating her lightning, stops and slowly steps back.

"I can't keep my eyes off you for a second, can I?" Atlas is still smiling, "But that's what I love, Jack. The scheming, the trickery, the decisiveness!"

>Sorry Atlas, aye already told ye that aye dun swing that way.
>Are ye gonna attack er keep flirtin' with me?

"Well, ye've taken most of our power n' trickery, and ye barely have a dent in ye. Not sure what else ye want at this point. Have we won already er not?"

"Frankly, I'm not sure what you would consider winning." Atlas stabs the spear into the crater that he's standing in. "I figured we would just go until one side wasn't left standing."

You suddenly think of an almost devious scheme.
"-Wanna change the rules?"

Atlas blinks, "What?"

"Well, aye'm thinkin' exactly what yer thinkin': That'll take ferever. It'll either be us bashing our heads against the brick wall that is yer chest, or you tryin' te beat hundreds and hundreds of soldiers. That doesn't sound like fun, does it?"

"Well, I don't exactly agree on that last part, but fine. So what's your offer?"

Yes, damn it Jack you are a genius.

"Aye was thinkin', instead of tryin' to wear each other down to the bone, let's just compromise. Yer clothes get ripped when ye take mortal damage, right?"

"As do yours." Atlas doesn't see where you're going with this, which is perfect.

"Then how ripped are they right now?"

He inspects himself, he's only wearing a light wrap-around shirt and some pants.
"Frayed here and there, but none worse for the wear."

"Then here's my offer, aye just gotta rip yer clothes, and we win. Sound good?"
"Hang on, what do I get out of this rule change?"

Damn it, no Jack. You are an idiot.

"Err, how about this! Ye only hafta defeat me, and we call it even."

"Just you?" Atlas blinks. "Not any of the other heroes?"

Crap, you should have said that.
Wait, no, that would mean that hits against Kayda and Louise would count. You can't do that, right?

"Yar, that's right. Just me." You feel a bit more nervous about this new gambit you've made.

"You know what? That's fine with me, Jack. I probably would have called the match after you got knocked out, anyway." Atlas smiles.

"Aye, great."
IMMEDIATELY, you reach into your ring and pull out your trusty "sidearm".

That sidearm is a gigantic magic cannon that you stole off the bow of a Konditorei airship. It still has its chains and moorings dangling from it as you smash it onto the ground in front of you. The smell of kerosene pouring from the well-oiled machine feels almost nostalgic in a way. Quickly, you pull the fuse-string on the boresight.

BOOM!

A roar of fire erupts from the cannon, and a mighty shell sails toward Atlas and strikes true. He is engulfed by a torrent of fire.
Suddenly, a wave of wind washes the flames and the smoke away. Atlas' smile is gone, but his gaze remains unchanging.

Suddenly, his hands extend outward, and an array of fireballs leap from his palms straight toward you!

So, in other news. I have a friend that may be coming to visit here in the next few days, her name is "Irma". Needless to say, it might be little hard to run a quest during her stay. I know this thread is about one or two days from falling off, but I just wanted to give a heads-up just in case Irma decides to crash on my couch with her pot-smoking son, Jose.

If that happens, and I'm out for maybe a week; then I can try doubling up the threads in order to get done by the end of September. We'll have to see! In any case, stay tuned and keep voting.

>good luck, man, have fu-
Oh yeah, it will be lots of fun. In a way you could say Irma is the talk of the town right now.
She gets everyone out of the house.
>>
Yes! Progress! He actually CAN be defeated, now!
And that-

Oh right, fireballs heading straight for you. You should deal with those first.

Quickly, you throw a shield of water in front of you. The first two fireballs collide and dissolve in a flurry of steam.
The last three punch straight through, and collide with your face. Not exactly your brightest move to date.

You fall backwards into the sand, and are just in time to see Atlas leap into the air.

"WHAR THE HELL IS MY BACKUP?" You yell, summoning a pillar of water which intercepts Atlas before he's able to put the boot to you. The blast of water slowly lifts him into the air.
Atlas, not one to be deterred by a strong defense, immediately tries something of his own. A huge boulder leaves the ground next to you, and quickly floats upward into his hand.

He holds it above his head, and the combined weight of him plus the rock causes the stream to slowly stop working its magic. He starts sinking back down to Earth.

Damn.

"LOUISE! HIT THE GEYSER WITH EVERYTHING YE GOT!"

FRSSHHH
CRACK!

A bolt of lightning strikes the pillar of water. Atlas clearly felt that, but he quickly counters by dropping the rock onto the big wave of water, and then standing atop the boulder. The electricity seems to have problems finding its way around the immense granite barrier Atlas has constructed.

There's a flash of blue, and Atlas stops descending. The entire pillar he was standing on has now frozen into a tower of ice. Yuuki throws another bolt of blue at the pillar, and gigantic spikes start to protrude from the structure.
Slowly, the water on top of the pillar starts to gradually poke upward at Atlas.

BANG! BANG! BANG!
Cody fires a few shots at Atlas, and readies up a green bolt of energy. Quickly, he throws the boomerang-shaped magic projectile at Atlas. It explodes against his chest in a flurry of wind.
CRACK!

The ice pillar suddenly has a gigantic fracture in it.

SHATTER!

Each and every blue, crystalline piece splinters and crushes under Atlas' weight.

CRUNCH!

Atlas falls straight through the ice, and collides with the ground with a smack.

Your foe grumbles, and then stands up slowly.

"I give you credit, that was a good counter."
Atlas' shirt is ripped in a few places, with a big tear going along his collar.

The former to set up for the latter. Make it a different sort of combo though, if we can. Nothing worse than being predictable at this point.

Also,
>Cody fires a few shots at Atlas, and readies up a green bolt of energy.
Haha, he HAS been working on his magic. Probably smart not to rely on it all the time, as long as he's been getting enough practice in. It'd help to know what the hell he can do though.

Oh just had a thought: torrent of water crashing down from above, which is frozen on the way down. Straight up smash him. Maybe Dorje can hold him still for a moment with earth.

This multiple-element thing is still working! You may be able to keep juggling Atlas like this if you can just keep him a bit more pre-occupied!

That is, if you didn't now have to worry about Atlas' counter-counter-attack.

He dashes forward, straight past Cody and right to you. You quickly take out your cutlass and block his first series of punches. With a kick, you're able to propel yourself away, and give you some breathing room. You summon another wave of water to crush him flat, and Yuuki is quick to solidify the wave into a solid wall of ice heading straight for Atlas.

He embraces himself with an orb of fire, and melts straight through the icy wall. There's another flash of lightning as Atlas' hands are zapped by Louise. He jumps at the sensation, and summons a wall of stone to fully surround him from Louise's barrage of sparks and electricity.

Perfect.

Quickly, you summon nothing short of a rainstorm of water directly above him, and fill his stone shield up to the brim with water.
He punches through the wall, and counters with some electricity of his own. His lightning, unlike Louise's blue and yellow lightning, is almost red by comparison. It flashes and burns the ground you're standing on, and even melts right through your shoes!

You grit your teeth, and jump away, and part of your shoes stay behind on the molten rock you were once standing upon. Kayda and Dorje try to take Atlas' attention away from you with a combination of stone and fire. Molten rock isn't even able to deter Atlas at this point.
He sees that you're open, and he's coming for you.

"READY!" You hear a loud voice from behind.
"AIM!", and you suddenly realize that you should hit the dirt right about now.

"FIRE!"

There's a roar of gunfire as magic projectiles of every size, color, and shape whoosh inches above your head and strike Atlas square in his chest. He rightfully sits down like anyone should after taking at least a hundred shots straight to his heart.

You look back to notice Biscotti's and Bruschetta's ranger forces being led by none other than Fritelli. Cassata stands front-and-center, quickly adding another arrow to her magic bow.

Damn good shot, Lasses.

Atlas quickly stands up, and seems more angry now than anything. This might be the first time you've seen him as anything other than 'disinterested' or 'aloof'.

This is taking too long.
It's time for the secret-secret trap.
The one that you were worried about having to use because you're not entirely sure how much damage this will do to the surrounding landscape.

"EVERYONE!" You yell to your ranks, but are mostly directing this at your fellow heroes. "GRAB SOMETHING THAT FLOATS, RIGHT NOW!"

"Floats?" Louise seems confused.
"What?" Yuuki joins her in confusion.

"I MEAN IT! RIGHT NOW! EVERYONE!"

This is either going to be the most dangerous thing you've ever done. Or the greatest thing you've ever seen.
