Welcome back, Kestrels, to the ninety-sixth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest. As always, I'm Wong, your host, and today you are once again the Pirate King of Phaeton and master of the Iron Kestrels Fleet, Roarke Susan Starwind. Although perhaps not immediately.

Since last session very definitely marked the end of a major arc, this one is a bit of a breather in which I'll answer questions and you'll also see a little bit about what's happening elsewhere in the setting. For starters...the resolution of what, exactly, happened to forty missing Avalonian PoWs and the cargo hauler Rainy Morning.

Welcome back.

“...And with that latest bit of news, I would remind the Senate that the passage of the Safe Belt Act would constitute an act of war and likely create a staging ground for the Avalonian forces should they return to the Solar System. I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone here that Bahamut Corporation and Bucephalus Heavy Industries are more than capable of providing our forces with the requisite mecha without being forced to stoop to stealing Harpies from the people of Phaeton.” Consul Tullius Rhodes adjusts his tiny, round spectacles and shifts his corpulent frame in his chair.

“Would the Esteemed Consul from Colony Seventy-Seven acknowledge that the people of this so-called independent nation were criminals mere days before?” The thin-faced Consul Maris Li steeples his fingers on the table before him, and glares at Rhodes. His use of the number rather than the colony's name is deliberate, a reminder that Senator Tullius Rhodes comes from a poor slum colony, as if simply saying it would dirty Li's mouth.

The senate room, by tradition, resembles an amphitheater. Overhead, the stars are projected across the ceiling, a real-time view through the armored roof of the senatorial palace. The room, as one might expect, is circular, with concentric semi-rings of seats around a dais located along one wall. Seating is determined by seniority, with the outermost, largest ring belonging to junior senators, while the innermost are occupied by the eldest and most experienced senators. Some of this innermost circle have been elected time and time again to ensure the requisite amount of pork is passed through legislation for their colony to benefit, sleepy old men and women who view these proceedings as a chore. Others are the lions of the senate, fierce and wealthy politicians with an eye on the Chairman's seat, if not for themselves than for friends they can reliably control. Above even them are the three Consuls, seated at individual desks before the dais. One for Europa, one for Io, and one for the colonies farther afield, Jupiter's other moons and those planets beyond Jupiter that have sworn allegiance and accepted citizenship. However, today only two Consuls are present. Maris Li, of Europa, and Tullius Rhodes, of Io. Bitter rivals, and today the air is more poisonous than usual with their usual counterbalance, the venerable Brian Wiggum of the Outer Provinces isn't here to counterbalance them. Over a century of life has sapped Consul Wiggum's health, and once again he has been forced to skip proceedings for medical attention. His chair sits, temptingly empty, a reminder that this longstanding member of the Jovian Senate is likely to retire soon, and create a glorious opportunity for some lucky Senator.

“Certainly not.” Tullius scoffs, “Their government and military may be composed of former space pirates, yes, but I assure you I am quite familiar with the colonies in question, and most of them, while occasionally lawless...the fault, perhaps, of the General in charge of overseeing the Belt...are civilian in nature, not the rabid horde of barbarians you so unjustly paint them as.”

Maris' lip twists in disgust. Some days, it's him verbally strangling Tullius, but today isn't one of those days. On the urging of a close ally, the General that Tullius refers to so cavalierly, he'd introduced the bill in question, and now thanks to a certain space pirate deciding on a whim to discover some self-proclaimed legitimacy, he's being raked over the coals for it, “Yes, I'm sure your dear friend, the pilot of the Black Ogre, is not a barbarian at all. Why, he's only marrying half a dozen women, one of them an Avalonian Paladin, has invaded a planet, robbed the Europan Museum of Culture...not that you care about that...committed countless thefts, hijackings, kidnappings, and done untold damage to UJCIDF morale and property. Of course, the Esteemed Consul from Colony Seventy-Seven would know nothing of that, as he personally did not donate anything to the Museum. Certainly not a priceless heirloom statue of the great Terran ruler President Barron Trump which has still not been returned. Additionally, while the Esteemed Consul from Colony Seventy-Seven sits there, blithely trusting in the goodwill of Roarke Starwind, he is quite willing to slander the commander of our own SOUL forces. Perhaps, as Starwind is Ionian, he feels some kinship to the Pirate King?” He knows he's being more rude than usual, to the point of unprofessionalism, but damn that, today he's earned the right to vent. “We are empowering a cancer at the very heart of the Solar System, a traitorous rot that cannot be relied upon to serve Jovian interests, and a vital security weakness.” Of course, someone with as many investments in Bahamutcorp as he has is truly uninterested in declaring the Belt's mecha fair game for seizure, but the removal of pirates creates lucrative opportunities for a man with an interest in mining corporations and colony builders.

Tullius' fat face spreads in a toadlike grin, “Why, the Esteemed Consul from Colony Fourteen raises many fine points! Indeed, Roarke Susan Starwind is Ionian, from a colony very near to my own. Indeed, he is a savage. Indeed, I have not been robbed by him, and for the sake of my seven beautiful daughters I hope he is content with his existing wives.” He wags a plump, sausage-like finger in the air to still the obedient laughter from the members of his faction, “However, the Esteemed Consul from Colony Fourteen ill-serves this body by speaking of war.” Like his colleague, his deliberate mentioning of the Colony's number is intended for effect.

Maris Li comes from old money, his colony is virtually impossible for newcomers to purchase a home in, a sculpted utopia of palatial estates and garden forests. “After all, his father made sure he never saw combat during the last one.” Tullius deliberately leans his other arm, an old-fashioned metal prosthetic, ugly and blatantly obvious, on the desk, clenching his metal fist, “I have no time for wordplay today, so I hope those of you expecting our usual sparring will forgive me for foregoing it. The Belt must be held if Jupiter itself is to remain safe from further Avalonian assault. If we waste our resources holding the Belt ourselves, Mars will become the dominant partner in the war against Avalon, claiming Jove-knows-how-many planets under the banner of the Caliphate. If we leave this to Mars, should it ever turn to war between our worlds they would be able to strike at us directly without delay. Roarke Starwind is willing to hold it and lend his considerable personal strength as a pilot to our cause in exchange for legitimacy, and regardless of anyone's quibbling, the Planetary Chairman has seen fit to authorize this. Unlike the Esteemed Consul from Colony Fourteen, I know the value of a savage, and I would have this one as our ally rather than belonging to Avalon or to Mars. The Caliph already has an advantage in diplomatic relations with the new lords of the Belt, I suggest we close the gap while there is still an opportunity to do so.”

Consul Li has several scything rebuttals prepared, and is poised to hammer them into Tullius' ears directly, when the smooth, musical voice of the man sitting behind the desk on the central dais interjects, “Enough, both of you. Put it to a vote. All in favor, the blue light. All opposed, the red.”

Luther Luxol leans back in his chair and sighs. Strong-featured, with a smooth, bald head he started shaving the moment his hair began to thin, he could almost have been carved from stone. In contrast to the brightly colored formal clothes in several different styles worn by the Senators, he stands out in stark black and white. The Planetary Chairman wears no crown, no laurels, no purple toga despite being the closest thing to a true ruler Jupiter has. Instead, he has the Suit. White shirt, black slacks, black vest, black jacket, black socks, black belt, black shoes, black tie, and a lapel pin bearing the Jovian flag, the Suit is distinctive in its imposing coloration and antique cut. Suits are still worn by many people on formal occasions, but the Planetary Chairman's Suit is an icon, of a style hailing back to the days when the Jovian Colonies were first established by wealthy tycoons fleeing the economic repression of Venus back when Venus was the replacement home for humanity following the nuclear conflict on Terra.

The senators hit the buttons on their chairs, and out of habit, he counts the flashes of blue and red light from the little metal pods sitting before them even as a monitor on his desk automatically tallies them. It's an inefficient and unnecessary procedure, but such extravagances are what makes government government. Ceremony and splendor instill awe and respect, give people something to believe in, and he knows their value. That is, after all, the reason for the man waiting outside the door to the Senate chambers, “It seems the Senate believes, almost unanimously that the Belt is safe enough with the establishment of the allied nation of Phaeton, Consul Li. The bill is denied. One would wonder that such a longstanding member of this body would propose a bill that would authorize sweeping military action in the Belt at this time, particularly for the sake of declaring all non-military mecha as government property for requisition. In my humble opinion, Consul Rhodes has the right of it...this time. If the bill had passed, there would surely have been an uprising, regardless of whether or not General Fairchild managed to crush it. One would suggest that, in the future, you should perhaps consider more carefully who among your many friends has the best interests of Jupiter at heart.” It pains him to scold Maris Li, a man of many connections and a great deal of utility, but he does so anyway, knowing that he's one of the few people the veteran Europan Consul will listen to on a personal level.

Maris Li bows his head, “I will continue to do my best to represent the interests of Jupiter.”

“As will I.” Tullius Rhodes replies, his joviality subdued by the Chairman's rather direct glance in his direction.

“I rely on both of you, as always. Debate is not to be feared, gentlemen. Disagreement, expressed through words of argument, is to be cherished. Some say the ability to argue, to dissent, is what sets us above the animals. Let us not forget what happens when debate fails.” He turns his head to glance at the painting behind him. The Burning of Berkeley, an artist's representation of the last battle in the ill-fated California Revolt from Terran history. An unsettling piece, but one that has hung in the Senate chamber for generations as a reminder that all viewpoints should be heard, even if not agreed to. “Now that that matter is settled, the time has come for serious business. The fighting on Qu'lir, Monbash, and Dwakim illustrates a new phase of the war. Direct confrontation, gentlemen. No proxies, no barely-trained rebels whose first exposure to a HMIS was some Avalonian advisor giving them a few hundred Knights and telling them to be brave against our own native allies. Avalonian soldiers, many of them elites who've spent their entire adult lives learning how to pilot, and although currently we enjoy the benefits of a technology gap between the line units and ours...that gap is closing with the introduction of the new, heavier, customized Knights used by their elite forces, the so-called Cavaliers. On top of that, Qu'lir was the first planet to be graced by Avalon's Paladins since they met the Megabass. My own youngest son was among those who participated in skirmishes with the Paladin Berenger and part of the squad that destroyed the Paladin Gerin. Of course is possible that this was simply a fluke, a one-time affair spurred by what they hoped to claim beneath Qu'lir's surface, a comatose Green Man that perished at the hands of League forces. They cannot continue to simply throw away Paladins at this rate, after all...as much as I wish they would.”

He pauses, smiling thinly at the laughter of the Senate and wishing it didn't sound so sycophantic, “However, assumptions can be lethal. We do not know if they are truly restricted to twelve, or if that is simply what the Green Man at the heart of their civilization wishes us to believe. We must maintain maximum battle readiness, we must expect anything and everything. You are the Jovian Senate, and I can say to you without fear of causing a panic outside this room that we still cannot rule out the potential existence of spores or other biological weaponry of the Green Men. Now, thanks to the research undertaken by our friends at Bahamut Corporation, including a fascinating and extremely confidential report by newly-promoted Senior Researcher Irina Gaunt, we have new insight into the biological power distribution and enhancement systems employed by the Paladins and can potentially...” His voice breaks off as a senatorial aide bursts into the room, ignoring the usual protocol to make her way to his chair and whisper in his ear.

His response is prompt, unhurried, “I'm afraid my announcement regarding the new War Marshal shall have to be postponed. Momentarily we shall evacuate the chamber and seek shelter in the bunker below. We're under enemy attack.” He raises his voice, “Calmly, everyone. Do not contact the outside, our adversaries do not yet know we are aware of their ambush.”

Maris Li raises his voice as he stands up, “Chairman, should we not call for the Praetorian Guard? We have forces stationed all around the colony.”

“Enemy forces, Senator, are already inside the colony.” The Chairman responds grimly, “The Praetorians are sufficient in both numbers and skill to utterly rout these invaders, but a direct battle would cause untold casualties among the civilians, especially if they manage to use this building as a hostage. We require a scalpel, not a blunt instrument.”

“Who, then?” Tullius Rhodes raises his voice. “Chairman, most of our ranking aces are on the front lines or on Auditorium dealing with a...certain matter.”

“Internal fighting regarding a decorated UJCIDF General facing ridiculous allegations at an extremely inopportune time, you mean? Or do you mean attending a wedding instead of being here when we need them?” Consul Li snaps.

“Well, I suppose if you consider treasonous corruption a ridiculous allegation, that's your affair, but I, for one...” Consul Rhodes starts, but is abruptly cut off.

“Enough, both of you. I'm already tired of this. I was hoping for a desk job, but even on my first day you're making me stretch my legs.” An unfamiliar but cutting voice accompanies the entrance of a tall man in a heavy raincoat. The others all drove here through the automated rain cycle, he'd chosen to ride his jetbike.

The face beneath his hood is grizzled, rendered old more by wear than by time, on the late edge of middle age. As he pushes the hood back, though, his hair is revealed to be freshly dyed a vivid blue, and the lights of the room gleam off his old-fashioned spectacles.

The entire room is silent.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your new War Marshal, effective immediately.” The Chairman's usually implacable voice, for once, sounds just a touch nervous, “I'm sure he needs no introduction.”

“No.” Maris Li remarks in a small voice, “No he does not.”

“H-Hang on!” Tullius Rhodes bursts out, “Luther, this is preposterous! How long has it been since he's piloted a mech? You know what he's been through, I've seen it with my own damned share of friends and family! You can't ask a man with...with...” His voice trails off, realizing what he was about to say.

“Cockpit phobia.” Rudolph Merrow adjusts his glasses.

“Right, with cockpit phobia to go into combat again!” The Ionian senator puffs up with indignation, “This is monstrous.”

“Incorrect, this is necessary.” Merrow's voice is smooth, hard, and flat as obsidian floor tiles. “There is only one way, Consul, to overcome a phobia. Exposure. Repeated, constant, exposure. I have forced my body and mind to endure the sensation of the HMIS over and over again, but to truly overwhelm my trauma, I have to taste combat. Bitter and sour though it is. I came here today to accept my new position and run some tests on my new mech, but from the looks on your faces, I see I have a mission far more pressing than destroying these Avalonian toys.” He shakes his head, “You're all looking at me with such worry. Such pity it's almost contemptuous. Not one of you believes I can do it, so I'll prove you wrong. General Hermione Fairchild's treason is not the last this body will face, I suspect, and for anyone considering following in her footsteps...I will show you what is waiting for you. No matter who you are, no matter what position you hold, if you are a traitor to Jupiter I will root you out, pluck you like a maggot from a wound, and I will crush you.” The whole time, his voice barely shows a flicker of emotion, “Luther, is it prepared?”

The Planetary Chairman nods once, “The Emperor Swordfish awaits you. Strike like a thunderbolt, Rudolph Merrow, Hero of Jupiter.”

With zero ceremony, Rudolph Merrow turns on his heel and walks out ahead of the orderly lines of senators en route to the bunker beneath the complex.

The room he heads for isn't a proper mechbay, not by any real standards. It has a sufficiently-large loading gate for a large mech to exit, but no catapult providing egress from the colony itself. It's relatively small, built for a single machine.

Four huge limbs, somewhere between wings and shields, are hooked up to the walls, and suspended in the middle of them hangs the humanlike body of the mech itself. Their tips are long, slender, sharp, almost like those of a blade, and underneath nest small bodies whose shape always reminds him somewhat of a turkey baster. As he has done literally every time he sees it, he grumbles about damned Terran technology and unreliable plasma blades. It's still painted a generic olive drab shade, completely uncustomized. The sculpting of the armor is fluted, curvy, and organic despite its massive bulk, the unmistakable Bahamutcorp aesthetic on display, and the squat head with its gleaming mono-eye could be easily missed if it weren't for its singular massive, bladed horn.

“How ugly.” He remarks, touching the tip of its foot.

“If you don't like it, it can always be changed.” The Planetary Chairman suggests.

Rudolph Merrow glances back at him, “No. It should be ugly. It's a weapon, an ugly thing put to an ugly purpose. I'm not required to like it, so long as its performance meets expectations.” He dons a pilot suit, then grabs the liftwire and rides it up, stone-faced.

The Planetary Chairman turns to the woman behind him, “Watch him closely, will you?”

She salutes, “Yes sir, I'll be monitoring his vitals the whole time. We'll know instantly if anything is wrong.” She switches on a monitor, medical screens popping up, “I took the liberty of attaching this to the Emperor's HMIS, if there are any irregularities, they'll show up instantly.”

Inside the cockpit, Rudolph Merrow's implacable expression breaks into a wide-eyed grimace, and he shudders and clutches his arms around himself, scratching at his shoulders. His breathing is harsh and ragged, and he licks at his lips. The air smells like copper, like blood and shit and fear, and even though he knows it's an illusion, he's practically choking on that stench.

The nurse looks at the Chairman with worry, “Heartrate spike, sir, breathing is irregular...should I shut it down?”

Luther Luxol just shakes his head, eyes fixed on the mecha, large enough to tower over the previous model, “Not yet. Not yet. Come on, Rudy...”

The Emperor Swordfish powers up with a low roar, huge thruster banks springing to life as its wings flex, pulling free from their restraints.

Luther sighs with relief, and activates the comms, “All systems green?”

“All green. Emperor Swordfish, ready for launch.” It doesn't hesitate in grabbing down a massive spiral lance from a rack on the wall, in fact, it's almost hasty in how quickly it seizes the weapon.

Luther glances at the line showing the elevated heartrate the nurse is monitoring, hoping she doesn't have some way to inject Merrow with a sedative if she panics over his condition. It's the sort of thing doctors would do, in his experience, but he knows how counterproductive that would be, “And what about you?”

“I'm fine.” Rudolph Merrow grunts.

“Just fine?” Luther can't resist needling the War Marshal a little.

The Emperor Swordfish's mono-eye swivels down to glare at the Planetary Chairman, “You'd better hope that's enough, otherwise I might step on you.”

Luther snorts, “You're definitely alright if you have that kind of attitude.”

The Emperor Swordfish shrugs, “What weren't you telling the Senators?”

“Was it obvious?” The Planetary Chairman sighs, “Very well, I've known since this morning that this attack was going to happen. I received a message directly, telling me that it was.”

The Swordfish's squat head swivels towards him, “Then why all of these theatrics?”

The Chairman smiles coldly, “For effect. I needed this attack to happen, so that when I execute General Fairchild people cheer instead of mutter that I'm a tyrant killing off potential rivals.”

“Are you?” The War Marshal questions.

The Chairman shrugs, “Perhaps, I certainly wouldn't want to see Hermione Fairchild as Planetary Chairwoman, would you? On the other hand, she's a tick, fat and swollen on Jovian blood, clinging to the underbelly of the beast that is the UJCIDF. It's high time she was plucked and crushed. I also need you to save the day, single-handedly, to remind everyone...not just Avalon, not just ambitious figures in the military, but also Mars, Luna, and even Terra, that Jupiter IS the Solar System League.”

“It doesn't matter to me. Do you know why I accepted your offer?” Rudolph Merrow remarks.

“Some reason beyond patriotism, I expect. I won't insult you by implying that you missed the thrill of combat.” The Chairman shrugs.

The Emperor Swordfish nods, “As War Marshal I am the highest-ranking officer of the UJCIDF, second only to you, with authority that no other officer can countermand.” The great cargo doors of the room slide open. Outside, rain is still pouring down, a grey curtain that makes the buildings of the colony look fuzzy and unreal.

“You didn't accept my offer just for the sake of power, otherwise you would have run for Planetary Chairman yourself. Don't insult my intelligence either.” Luther crosses his arms.

“That's too much trouble. There's only two things I want to do.” Rudolph Merrow examines the Swordfish's sensors. Two squads of Knights move with eerie precision towards the senate building along the nearby street, more of them converging along parallel paths. He plots their location, watching them move, waiting...

“What are those?” The Chairman questions.

“First, I plan to finish what I started. Call it revenge, if you like, I don't think it's anything that grand, I simply don't want the Green Men to exist in this galaxy anymore. Once I do, my dead can rest in peace, and so will I. Perhaps it's more like making up for my own failures.” As the road turns towards the building, the approaching knights form a straight line, and the Emperor Swordfish crouches down. Its lance begins to spin, the huge drill humming ominously.

“There were things you couldn't have stopped.” The Chairman's voice is mildly worried, his tie whipping in the wind created by that drill.

“Of course, but it still has to be done. I'll end the race of Green Men with my own hands...and more importantly, issue an honorable discharge to Ensign Heinrich Merrow, effective immediately with you as my witness. He's to be drummed out of the UJCIDF, and to turn his mech over immediately.” There's a tremendous roar, and the Emperor Swordfish is suddenly just...gone.

>issue an honorable discharge to Ensign Heinrich Merrow
Roarke's going to have to fight him on Caesar's behalf I can see it now.
>>
>>1846709
Well that will require him to get him out of Avalon. Also, didn't Fairchild say he was on a secret mission? Because I can see that ending badly for her.
>>
>>1846695
Wonder if Merrow has any inclination of what his son is up to now? He only ever got the runaround from fairchild, and I'm not sure anyone else in the know has contacted him, either from uncertainty (stern didn't know for sure what was what until just a short time ago, and he's been busy to say the least. Maybe defected to pirates or maybe not is a world of difference from signing up with space satan [at least from the jovian view]), or just being intimidated by either Rudolph's legend ( or wrath). No one wants to be the bearer of bad news ahah.
>>
>>1846715
And as the supreme military commander he can scrub that mission and order Caesar to get back asap. Hell, he'd probably be able to access the full records that show what really happened that day over the space factory.
>>
>>1846726
And thats the beauty of it. It's a mission that never happened. The moment he finds that out, Fairchild's life is going to be even worse. Forget fighting Rudolph for Caesar, we may have to fight him to kill Fairchild.

To be fair, he might not know that part. Merrow has only been seen by Stern. If he kept quiet, the number of people who would directly know would be higher up pirates.
In either case, the one who will face angry Papa Merrow first would be Fairchild. She did put him on the same team as a greenie, lost him and the Swordfish, and is the reason this went to hell. Roarke might be poked, but it'd be more due to him selling the swordfish.

The Chairman pops his fingers into his ears just in time, the nurse hastily following suit, but it doesn't do nearly enough to stifle the din of six Knights being impaled nigh-simultaneously on a charge that bodily rips them into pieces, metal raining down in all directions. Their cores are mashed together, skewered like bits of meat and vegetable on a kebab skewer. The twisting motion of the drill grinds them together, pieces catching and interlocking so that when Merrow whips his lance free, the six Knights don't even fall over.

Its wings fan out, the nesting bodies beneath scattering like seeds, “Fly, Javelins!” Merrow's voice sounds bored. Explosions bracket the Emperor Swordfish from the adjacent streets as it strolls onward, lance in hand, the smaller beam spears projected by its drones dancing along the adjacent avenues, “There's something wrong with them.” He notes, “They aren't reacting to my attacks properly. It's as if they have no fear, but no sense of self-preservation, either. It's making them sloppy.” Another squad charges out from around an intersection, lances leveled and firing a volley of shells, but the Swordfish casually closes its front two wings over its body, surrounded by the flickering glow of a beam shield that screens the shots away. Three Javelin drones arc around behind them from either side, all three Knights abruptly skewered by a pair of spikes.

“...Perhaps you might want to leave one alive? Just to confirm what we know?” The Chairman suggests, picking up a pair of visual amplifiers to watch from a safe distance.

Merrow lets out a disgusted sigh, turning and deftly impaling a Knight trying to assail him between two buildings. “At least the civilians all ran away when they saw approaching mecha.” He grumbles.

“I mean it, take a few alive!” The Chairman insists.

“I heard you the first time.” Merrow gripes, another four drones emerging from beneath its wings, pinning down another Knight and dissecting it around its cockpit ball. While his drones secure a few prisoners, he sets to work with his lance, leaping into the air to charge downwards like a streaking comet on another mob of Knights, sweeping his lance across their rank to slice them in half. His movements are methodical, almost robotic, less like a man engaged in combat than a chef calmly chopping up carrots. Every few seconds, there's another explosion. “How did you know about this, anyway?” His voice is bored, as if he's just intent on some conversation to relieve the monotony as his jabbing drill erases Knight after Knight, using his wings like scoops to throw the burned-out husks aside to get to new foes.

“We received a tip.” The Chairman pulls a chair away from a desk and sits down, grinning as he watches. Already, half the Knights are down, and Merrow barely seems to be exerting himself.

[Continued]
>>
“From who? An Avalonian? These can't be their regular soldiers.” Merrow slices a Knight in half down the middle with the automated defensive beam sabers built into his mech's torso.

“No, the tip we received was from Auditorium. Someone with authority was involved, judging by the tone of the message.” The Chairman checks on the nurse, who looks at her screens and gives him a thumbs-up. Nothing to worry about so far, hopefully that will continue.

There's another series of explosions as the Emperor Swordfish finds another knot of Knights, deftly sidestepping a lance and impaling its wielder, like a champion jouster among pageboys, before wading into the melee. The Swordfish flares its wings wide, and boosts into the air, flying over the building and out of the Chairman's sight to take out the enemies approaching from the flank. “Roarke Starwind. I've heard of him. Why is he involved?” There's a short pause, “...Don't tell me Starwind has contacts among the Avalonian forces and you LET him into the SSL! If he's playing both sides, nothing good can come from indulging him!”

“Roarke Starwind is under control. A former senior intelligence official in her assessment of him reported a deep and abiding hatred for the Green Men as a result of trauma done to his mother during the War. Even if he has sympathy for individual Avalonians, he's not going to flip.”

“Which official?”

“Regina Hatsheput.”

“Mmm. Credible.”

“Oh, don't sound so disappointed. Besides, Avalon isn't really behind this attack, as I'm sure you already suspect.”

“When you referenced General Fairchild earlier, you weren't suggesting this would prove incompetence on her part, were you? Is she behind this?” Merrow's voice is suspicious.

“Of course.” The Chairman confirms.

“Damn it!” Merrow's voice becomes momentarily heated, “My SON is under her command, Luther! She could take him hostage if you make even the slightest mistake!”

“I think he's safe from General Fairchild at the moment.” Luther Luxol straightens his tie, and chooses his next words very, very carefully. A rampaging Rudolph Merrow would be much worse than forty Knights. After all, for all that he is a self-professed schemer and politician, Luther Luxol is also very close with both of his sons, and has communicated regularly with them during their stay on Auditorium.

Including the day when his youngest son regretfully confessed to having been defeated by the Butcher and failing to rescue one of his best friends.

“Safe? I did an inquiry, you know. I went and asked where my son was stationed, and do you know what I was told? 'Sorry, sir, but Ensign Merrow is on a secret mission by order of General Fairchild.'” He's been removed from regular duties on her orders, he's being kept from the public eye for some reason...and therefore, somewhere I can't reach. Now that she can't countermand me, I can order him dismissed from service, but for that to happen YOU need to put a hold on whatever you're doing to curtail her until he's out of it.” Merrow's voice has a lot in common with his mech right now, bluntly lethal.

“That isn't possible.” Luther Luxol, however, is not an easy man to cow. “Fortunately, I mean it when I say he's safe from her.” He steels himself, this isn't going to be pleasant, “How many are left?”

“Five Knights...no, three now. There are still people in this building, so I can't just ram it. Answer my damned question.”

“Rudolph, it's for the best if you're not in that thing when I do.” Luther warns him.

Merrow's silence is incredibly ominous. It lingers. There are three more explosions, and then his voice, slow and deliberate, “Where is my son, Luther?”

“You've only just been promoted, there's material you need to be briefed on, secret projects, the details of key operations...”

“No more stalling. I'm on my way back, and we are going to have a talk. Whether I'm in my mech or out of it when we do depends on what you have to tell me meanwhile.” Merrow's voice is grim.

“Did you know Heinrich has a girlfriend?” Luther sighs, looking less worried than he feels.

“...What? My Heinrich? A girlfriend? Really?” Rudolph Merrow sounds rather unfairly disbelieving.

Luther sighs, “Yes. Really. She's good-looking, too, and...”

Rudolph interrupts him, “Is she a hologram?”

“What? No! A hologram? I don't understand.” Luther sputters, not understanding at all.

“You're sure? She's not a hologram that talks or...or sings and says affirming things?” Rudolph presses.

“Of course she's not!” Luther shakes his head, “Do those even exist?”

“Oh, the things you learn when your son spends so much time on the holonet...” Rudolph mutters darkly, “Are you sure she's REAL? I mean, a real girl and not a fictional character from a game or a show or something?”

Luther leans away from the comm and beckons to the nurse, “Contact the Praetorian Guard and order the Rainy Morning seized. I expect from the data we've been given that the controllers for those squads are there, relaying orders remotely.”

“Is she a real human being, Luther?” Merrow asks again.

“Yes! She's a real girl! A SOUL pilot, even!” Luther Luxol snaps, “Honestly, have a little faith in your own offspring! MY boys are out there, and you don't see me panicking like this!”

Merrow grunts in acknowledgment, “What's her name and why is she relevant? Does she know where he is? Where can I contact her?”

“Ensign Naomi Heim. Unfortunately, she's the reason for this so-called secret assignment. General Fairchild tried to sweep this under the rug, but I have my sources.” This is technically true, Luther Luxol's sources include his sons, Trevor and Garret. “Some years ago, two clones of the Green Men were discovered, and-”

“...And not terminated immediately? You absolute idiot.” Rudolph sounds shocked.

Luther slams his fist down on the desk, “Children, Rudolph! Innocent children! Practically babies! We watched them carefully, they were gifted but not superhuman! The Great Sidereal War is OVER! I wasn't going to let them be slaughtered! We let their foster parents continue to raise them and inducted them into the UJCIDF for close observation. During that time, the female, Naomi, came into contact with your son Heinrich and...”

“Luther, if you tell me right now that this is all one big joke and that he's actually run away with this girl of his to raise lizards on Qu'lir I will laugh and smile and forgive you, otherwise...” Rudolph growls like a wounded lynx.

“No. It would be fantastic if it was, but it wasn't. They became attached to each other, quite passionately, apparently, and his presence was deemed a stabilizing influence on her so Joseph Muragi allowed it to continue.”

“I'll tear off his other leg the next time I see him.” Rudolph promises, his usual icy calm completely shattered and the raging ocean beneath revealed, “My son was seduced by a Green Man clone right under your very noses and you did NOTHING.”

“No, you won't. We need him, and frankly, Heinrich Merrow was an adult whose father at the time was RETIRED and had no say in the love lives of individual pilots.” Luther rubs his temples, almost wishing Rudolph would just step on him and put him out of this awkward situation.

“So what happened with her, then? I expect it proved you right, that she absolutely isn't a danger to the galaxy AND MY SON!” Rudolph Merrow is too angry to even be sarcastic, “Why couldn't it be a normal girl!?”

“Maybe because his father loved a woman who could punch stone pillars in half! Maybe it's genetic!” Luther snaps.

There's silence momentarily, then a deep sigh, “That was low, Luther. Really low.”

Luther sighs too, “Yeah, I know it was. By all accounts, she was good to him and he was good to her. If they weren't, Joe would have stepped in and...”

Once more, Rudolph interrupts him, “He didn't step in for Blanchett when she fell for Starwind.”

Luther smacks his palm against his forehead repeatedly, “Because she ran off! Besides, everything turned out fine, they're married and Starwind is a reformed character!”

“Until the MOMENT he sees an opportunity to grab something he wants that you don't want him to have, and then it's all ancient Terran music and broken mecha and believe me Luther I will gloat and remind you incessantly that I told you so for the rest of our careers.” Rudolph grumbles, “Enough about Jovedamned Roarke Starwind, I feel like all I hear about nowadays is that carrot-haired reprobate. Tell me about my son.”

“I've seen the footage of him fighting the Green Skulls. You'd be impressed, honestly. He's a lot like you, and Joe's taught him a lot too.” Luther continues.

“I don't care. I'd be impressed if he'd learned an honest trade that didn't involve fighting, and did it well. Whether he became a plumber or a politician, I'd be proud of him, but there's no honor in being good at fighting. I did what I had to do because no one else could do what I could. In this day and age, there are plenty of aces, he didn't need to do this.”

“Sometimes, Rudolph, I worry about you.” Luther shakes his head, “Part of being a father is realizing that, sometimes, your children know what they need and you don't.”

“And sometimes they're completely wrong and end up in a situation so bad that you, Planetary Chairman Luther Luxol of Jupiter, are stalling to avoid telling me about it. Finish the damned story.”

“Alright, alright. This wasn't directly reported on, because aspects of the story were an embarrassment to the UJCIDF, but a little over three months ago an Avalonian straggler vessel at the asteroid 16-Psyche was intercepted by a UJCIDF cruiser. The two ships were engaged in a standoff, and the Jovian ship's captain had called for reinforcements, when the Iron Kestrels showed up in force sufficient to overwhelm both sides. Shortly after, our reinforcements arrived, complete with two SOUL squads, one of which included your son and Naomi Heim. Unfortunately, General Fairchild had placed the other squad, under Lieutenant McAllister, in charge.” Luther explains.

“Quite possibly, but I'd prefer if you didn't. The odds were heavily weighted in the pirates' favor, but Lieutenant McAllister and then-Admiral Starwind worked out an arrangement to retake the facility, prioritizing the Avalonian forces as a target. Unfortunately, due to a foolish but ultimately innocent propaganda broadcast, the Avalonians got a look at Naomi Heim's face and recognized her as the clone of the Lady.” Luther winces in anticipation.

“The Lady of the Woods. My son's girlfriend is a clone of the Avalonian so-called goddess herself. Not just any Green Man, but THE last Green Man bringing war to the galaxy.” Rudolph's voice is deadpan, but with a faint, enraged tremble to it.

“I know, what were the odds?” Despite himself, the Planetary Chairman is beginning to perversely enjoy this banter, since the odds of him being stepped on are actually quite low. “Most parents are proud when their children follow their dreams, you know, and Caesar really is a superlative pilot.”

“A SUPERLATIVE PILOT WHO'S DIPPING HIS WICK IN GREEN MAN POISON! WHO KNOWS WHAT VILE APHRODESIACS SHE'S CONTROLLING HIM WITH!?” Rudolph snaps.

“Come on, she received frequent medical examinations and no anomalies were detected. If she started putting off abnormal pheromones, do you think we wouldn't know about it immediately? Anyway, she panicked, and...well, there had been one instance of her going berserk during training already, and at first it seemed like it was repeating itself, a momentary loss of control, something her squad leader was trained to deal with, only he was helping with the facility too. The remaining SOUL pilots attempted, apparently on Fairchild's orders, to apprehend her. Heinrich resisted.”

“That foolish boy. Scrap the honorable part, he'll receive a dishonorable discharge for that.” Rudolph snaps.

“In the process, Ensigns Young and Fleur had their SOUL mecha cut in half by Heinrich's S-Swordfish...”

“Which, by the way, he stole. He had no right to it.” Rudolph growls.

“Yes, yes, I know. Restrain yourself for just...a few minutes. Let me talk, damn it. According to Ensign Young, Heinrich called upon the Iron Kestrels to give sanctuary to himself and Naomi.”

“So they defected to the pirates? Good, then I can kick him out without so much paperwork, fly to Auditorium, get my son back and...deal with the girl.”

“If only it was that easy. At least you're not threatening to kill her when she's a valuable SOUL asset, a good pilot, and on OUR side. The Avalonian commander was among those who saw her face, and after a brief religious experience, called for aid. Two Paladins ambushed the forces outside of the facility, one an ultra-heavy close combat type belonging to the apparent leader of the Avalonian forces in the Solar System, the other a long-range sniper type. The ultra-heavy proceeded to destroy several pirate aces' mecha, the S-Swordfish, and somehow managed to put the girl into a state where she attacked our own pilots before following him away. Starwind attempted to stop them personally, but his mech was damaged and he was unable to get there in time.” Luther pauses and waits for the outburst. Moments stretch by. “Well?”

“Well what?” Rudolph responds.

“Well, don't you have anything else to say?” Luther rubs his temples yet again as the Emperor Swordfish returns to through the cargo door, bending down a little to fit its horn underneath.

“No, you're old enough to realize how ridiculous it is to say she's on our side when she's under their control. You remember the War, Luther. You remember the spores. You remember good men being infected, and that when it happened they stopped being on our side and had to be put down. You remember that it was for their own good, and merciful or not, that's what has to be done for the Heim girl. If you don't like that, have me removed from my post.” Rudolph's voice is weary and disgusted.

Luther sighs, “I won't do that, Rudolph. We'll figure out what to do when we get the chance to take her back, nobody knows where she is now, the Avalonians left Auditorium by the time I had all the details from Regina. Former Sergeant Samantha Blanchett was in intel, but she refuses to discuss secrets of her husband's business no matter who asks her, and although she was one of Naomi's friends she swears she doesn't know where she is now. I'm inclined to believe her, Naomi Heim is valuable and if Blanchett knew then Starwind would know and would have taken her back already. It's his way.”

“So she's missing, and my son is with the Iron Kestrels...sorry, 'independent nation of Phaeton', where I can safely file his discharge papers for reasons of insubordination, go to Auditorium, grab him by the ear, and drag him back home. If Roarke Starwind doesn't like it I'll break his Black Ogre over the Emperor Swordfish's knee.

Luther shakes his head, “The moment you calm down you'll regret saying that, I know you know better than to underestimate anyone. We don't need this, Rudolph. We need the real you, the cool-headed, practical one.”

“You can have that once I've taken my son back.” Rudolph insists, “I'm going to Auditorium.”

“He's not there.” Luther finally tells him point-blank. “I'm not happy about this and I didn't want to tell you, but...he's gone. Ran away from the Kestrels, apparently, and infiltrated the Avalonian delegation to get his woman back. My son and his squad tried to stop him, but when they took it far enough to actually ambush the shuttle he and one of the Paladins were on, well, Roarke Starwind's wives put a stop to it and after that there just wasn't another chance. Given the information we had about this attack, it's likely he's the one who tipped us off via the Kestrels, so the Avalonians trust him enough to let him communicate, apparently.”

The Emperor Swordfish's cockpit hatch opens, Rudolph Merrow rides down the liftwire, walks over to Luther with his fists clenched, “How long have you known this for?”

“Since this morning. A matter of hours.” Luther looks fearlessly up at his comrade, a man he admires as a onetime hero and considers a friend.

Rudolph exhales heavily, removes his helmet, and throws it across the room. He points to the nurse, “You trust her?”

“General Fairchild is suspected in the killing of her mother, aunt, and older brother. I do trust her.” Luther Luxol's voice is quite firm.

Rudolph slumps down into a chair, dropping his head into his hands, “Damn it, Luther...” His voice is unexpectedly raw, “At least you told me quickly.” He shakes his head slowly, “You understand what they're doing, right? It's all happening again.”

“Your son isn't Floyd, Rudolph.” Luther tells him, surprised by how scratchy his own voice is.

“Not yet, but you know what they are. What they do. People's personalities are like clay to them, they'll mold him and shape him into the form they like, and then send him back to...”

“Yeah. Believe me, Rudy, I was proud of my boy when he told me he tried. Trevor is a good man, but he's too wrapped up in trying to be a great warrior and a great politician all at once. Garret never had that kind of ambition, he put his all into his heart.”

“Heinrich just...he just...” Rudolph's voice breaks, “He's my son, Luther. I fought to keep him, I fought to keep him safe, and he just...ever since he was little, he was always so bright, but he never cared about anything, never wanted to do anything serious to make the galaxy better. He could have been Chairman someday. I tried, I tried so hard to tell him what kind of tragedy there is for people who throw themselves headlong into war, but...he never listened, just like I never listened to my parents.”

Not even, considering what a worrywart parent he is. But it'll at least give him the faintest silver of hope.
>>
“It's okay to cry, Rudy. Men cry, you know, even bitter old men like you and me.” Luther pats him on the back, “But he's full of heart, too. He's not Floyd, and I know one of the reasons you worry is that he's so much like you. I don't believe he's going to trade his soul for hers like Floyd wanted to with Ji, and you can't keep carrying around the guilt for not telling Floyd that Ji chose you before she died. It wasn't your fault, and everyone who knew the three of you knows it. Believe in him the way I believe in you. In the way Jupiter believes in you. I chose you because you're not just a hero, but because you're a good man, a reliable man, the man we need right now.”

“The Senate might disagree.” Rudolph comments drily, wiping his eyes, “And forget crying, I know what I have to do. There's only one direction to go if I want to see my son again. Forward. He's in as much danger if we win as if we lose, but if we overwhelm the greenies, maybe I'll get the chance to get him back.”

Luxol smiles, “That's the Rudolph Merrow we needed. The real one. The Senate, if you'll forgive me correcting you, are terrified that you'll root out which ones are crooked and useless and hold them up to the light. A lot of them, including both of the Consuls, have gotten rich off their investments in the mech-production companies and the more wasteful this war is the happier they are. The reason Consul Rhodes might as well be Roarke Starwind's personal cheerleader is because his Bucephalus-made Thoroughbred-MP Custom has been a breath of fresh air for their advertising. The Mustang line was launched because of the Black Ogre, explicitly so.” Luxol sits back, steepling his fingers.

“How good is he? You were awfully quick to tell me not to take him lightly.” Merrow raises one eyebrow.

Luther Luxol sighs, “He beat Joe. It came down to the wire but he beat him. His father was one of the Pekoes too, and according to the two who are still around to talk about it he's like the second coming of Belegor.”

Merrow raises both eyebrows, “That good? Impressive. Although the last thing we need is another Belegor.”

“This one has a soul, according to everything we've heard. His people love him, and revere him almost like a demigod. After all, he's been undefeated since his apparent ressurection, is unafraid of the military and exterminated the Green Skulls. The man juggles six wives and they all dote on him. Can you imagine doing that?” Luther shakes his head.

>>
“I can't imagine being doted on at all.” Merrow chuckles humorlessly and leans back in his chair, “I'm going to avoid fighting him unless I have to. No matter who loses, it would be a detriment to the cause. If he's defeated in front of his people, rivals who might be less anti-Avalon and pro-SSL than he is might conspire to take power. If I lose, well, that's a blow to our propaganda, isn't it? I don't care which of us is better, so long as we're both good enough to get the job done, and besides...I'm not at my peak anymore. I could feel it out there, I was slow, and clumsy. Simulations just aren't the real thing, I need to get back into fighting shape and sharpen my mind if I ever want to be as good as I used to be. These Paladins are new, and from what I've seen, they don't fight like the Green Men. The Green Men at their core hated violence almost as much as they hated us, for them it was always about taking overwhelming power and just...squashing...what offended them. They had incredible skills, but no love of fighting, they'd get impatient. These Paladins come from an entire warrior caste of Avalon's culture, they're nothing alike. I'll need to be at my peak if I'm going to kill the remaining ones.” He stands off and dusts off his hands.

“Let's go tell those quivering mice that they can leave the bunker now. Whichever one was spying for Fairchild will communicate with her soon, trying to let her know her little setup for a coup failed. After that, it's just tying the nooses and our little domestic problems are dealt with.” Luther stands up to, “As for the war, have you already given any thought to the strategic situation?”

“We'll discuss that with the full SSL, including Starwind. Odds are good this new nation of his needs time to build up its forces fully, and we might want to see about feeding him a little so that he can maintain a defensive presence in his own territory and still be useful assisting the Extrasolar Division. I can think of a few uses, however, if you have footage of that recent tournament...” As Merrow rambles on, Luther finds himself smiling. It's not every day one witnesses the ressurection of a hero.

Took another look at the advanced tech manual and missed something that might be good.
Maneuver pods. 4cp, 2 spaces. Can move 8 spaces a turn and has sensors. A lesser version of the Nightmare's vehicle pod.
The reason I bring this up is because it takes the same number of spaces as a Environmental Pod with only 2 more CP. With a few tweaks to some designs, or making a 150 design to accommodate minor changes and improvements, we could deal with a bunch of issues mechs in this setting have. Specifically, being sitting ducks whenever they get taken out.
>>
>>1850791
And here we go. A simple up grade for our 140 machines.
Commander Type: +10 CP
Upgrade Enviropod to Maneuver Pod: 2 CP
Intermech Link x2: 8 CP link is to a weapon the squad shares.
It's a pretty simple one. Commander mech hits, the two squaddies fire and hit as well. No real point for those with beastly weapons, but it'd make even lesser weapons dangerous in a good commander's hands.
>>
>>1850472
Saving for later use.

Incidentally, I'm thinking about making Anat in MZ. What's a good way to represent Nuclear attacks?
>>
>>1851177
That's the Archen, Rosita's mech.

And when you say nuclear, do you mean nuclear missiles or some kind of nuclear sword?
>>
>>1851190
I mean firing blasts of concentrated Nuclear Radiation.
>>
>>1851201
That'd probably be a Beam Weapon then. With a negative range modifier depending on how the weapon works, I dunno what Anat is.

If the radiation just kills the pilot, you could give it Shock (Only) from melee weapons and projectile ammo. Though if you're actually going to use it for a game, you'll want to test what multiplier would be balanced for it. x2 is way too low for a ranged shock weapon, but x4 is seems pretty hefty for an entire gun. It could end up being really OP though, shock is crazy, so x4 might be appropriate.
>>
>>1851225
Anat is a Persona from P5. It starts off as a motorcycle but turns into a transforming mech/motorcycle. Its niche in the game is Nuclear and Healing Skills and, with the right build, it will be the only JOAT party member.

Beam weapons are a great idea, but I think I might use the Special Effect Weapon rules to make it more versatile.

>>
>>1851546
What do you think of my idea from here? >>1851081
Could probably make some other minor upgrades for the lot of our mechs that could be applied with relative ease. Also, what mechs gave you the most trouble when you made them?
>>
>>1851552

Nobody is quite sure exactly how many there were, because of the clones, but the number was in the thousands at the very least. That is, however, tiny compared to the sheer number of humans there were, and is the reason why so much of the fighting was done by their followers and bio-drones.

As for how many living people can claim to have killed one? Certain retired soldiers, Skunk (as part of a team), the Orange Pekoe squad (including Belegor), Rudolph Merrow, various ship captains and scientists who participated in designing weapons for planetary bombardments and carrying those bombardments out, Hakim the Kinless and some senior Martian commanders, everyone who bombarded the Father of Qu'lir...it's not about "who else can claim to have killed one", frequently they were overwhelmed by sheer numbers and nobody cared who had the killshot because all of their friends were now dead.

>>1851557

There are different factors, considering how early that was and how different their mecha were.

I'll think about it.

> They're all heavy as shit though.
It's all relative. This quest has got people thinking that anything above MV-3 (or if you're 'heavy' maaaybe MV-4) is borderline unusable, so people are inclined to min max when building and then slather weight efficiency on top. But looking at the Kaiser even a middle of the road medium frame with some basics was in the 50 ton range, and that was without any kind of noteworthy gear weighing it down further.

Because the game is all opposed rolls only the difference in MV matters, so there's no practical difference whether the mechs tend to range from 30-50 tons or 60-80 tons as long as they're all like that. Frames and armour add on weight quick, so the stuff in the core book was heavy like that too.

100+ tons is a lot, though you got to figure if you're doing that you might as well go big or go home, since there's no larger penalty past it.
>>
>>1852241
>This quest has got people thinking that anything above MV-3 (or if you're 'heavy' maaaybe MV-4) is borderline unusable
Eh, I think that's mostly on Wong, though it's really nobody's "fault" per se. A lot of the mechs present at the beginning like the Harpie or Bluegill cost very little and didn't weigh much at all, and his designs usually weigh less than Mekton mechs that have a similar cost. I can't tell if that's because he tends towards lightweight weapons like missiles or EMWs or if it's because he rightfully doesn't use fuel rules though.

tl;dr Wong set the standard and some people just took it to an extreme.
It didn't seem to affect the tourney mechs much anyway, only two people spent more than 5 CP on weight efficiency.
>>
>>1852241
>>1853286

Most Mediums were at -5ish and the S-Slayer was at -6. Hell, the Tarrasque was at -7 or so despite the Fatima Custom being lighter now.

Speaking of which, for those of you wondering why the Fatima Custom's stats aren't posted...they're about 90% done and have been for months. The problem is the supplementary gun system.

The big gun and shields are perfectly fine and completely finished. I know how fast it moves and what it weighs. However, its area attack...the one that used to be an all-around shot...is something I'm just not happy with no matter how I remake it. Any ideas would be welcome.
>>
>>1853352
I was just talking about the weight. The D-Stalker in Zeta Plus weighs 68 tons at base for 246 CP, and the mechs you've made that cost ~240-250 CP either weigh less than 60 or have a lot of weight efficiency. The ones without weight efficiency /do/ only have a 1 MV difference, but your designs still weigh about 10 tons less. The Knight also weighs 1 ton less than the Typical Algol Mekton in the corebook despite having treads, and the example only having a beam sword and gun with no shield. It just seems like you're a lot better at minimizing weight than the Mekton designers. Or they didn't bother to worry about it for the examples.

That also reminds me that we haven't actually seen the stats for any of the new MP SOUL mechs though. Too bad the Tarrasque doesn't have an ASP.
>>
>>1853352
Depends on how you want them done. You could use weapon mounts, have one gun face forward in a 180 range, the other facing the other way, and have them linked. That way, if you don't want to fire at those behind you, you can turn that link off. It's one of the nice things about the Tarrasque. It's so big that torso weapon mounts will give you plenty of spaces.
>>1853432
Part of it could also be a case of us simply using less weapons in general. You'll see some machines with 3 or 4 different things, plus some modifiers on top that can increase the price like mad. As with the Saddest Bug, they really do not build them efficiently.
>>
>>1853466
Got a few other ideas as well.
1: Reduce the range to 1-2, give the gun burst. Staying close to a artillery mech is usually a bad idea, and it prevents you from friendly firing everyone in range.
2:Energy pool/variable beam. AOE form, burst form. Allows you to select.
3: Make it into a anti missile version or maybe anti personel. Perhaps both. If it is to shoot everything, then it will shoot everything.

The best idea I can come up with for the gun is it being retooled to have a smaller AOE but with added BV or Mega Beam so it can shred mechs closer to the squishy end of the spectrum.

Dunno what you'd do about it being able to fire behind the Tarrasque though.
>>
>>1853432

You might be disappointed in the MPs. Remember when I said, really early on, that the original Thoroughbred MPs were basic Medium Weight frames with Medium Weight armor, Greatshields, and complete basic bitch melee/range options without much Space Efficiency?

These are similar to that. A Mustang Commando, for instance, is a Medium Weight Frame with Medium Weight armor, a stealth system, a rapid-fire beam gun, and a basic bitch beamsaber.

>>1853466
>>1853559

I could. Making it 180-degrees and increasing the damage was what I originally went with, I think it's 6K or so now, but I'll probably reduce the damage and make it capable of attacking people and missiles.

>A Mustang Commando, for instance, is a Medium Weight Frame with Medium Weight armor, a stealth system, a rapid-fire beam gun, and a basic bitch beamsaber.

That sounds like an expensive fucking mech. What's the Commando's role really?
>>
>>1853725
I've only ever used sabre in the context of fencing. Everything else has been saber.
>>
>>1853859

The most expensive of the SOUL MPs, by far. It's a bigger version of the Triple Black Stars' Betta MPs with standard weapons instead of customized ones. Its role is to serve as bodyguard units for Fairchild's mech and clean up with backstabs whatever her drones don't kill.
>>
>>1853879
That raises several questions.

First: how much does a Commando cost?

Second: What's the name for the non-stealth version and how much does it cost?

Third: If you stripped out all the extra systems, could the Kestrels reverse engineer it from the original designs for the Kaiser?

The fourth question is actually unrelated but I'm drunk: I was thinking about writing an article called "The Six Queens of Phaeton" that would talk about the advantages each waifu brought to
>>
>>1853912
Likely not that much. See that Generian? Increase the size by 1 and you probably have it. 7 CP to increase the body, 6 for the armor, 7 CP worth of thrust for the body. so 21 CP for the upgrade. That means it would be 145 and -5.

Stealth stuff we have had for a while. The Betta is the queen of stealth and that info went into the shinobi harpies.

Not sure how much it would cost, but I would assume a commando would be in the 220+ range. Stealth systems are expensive.
>>
>>1853879
Hey wong, without looking too far into the future, how do you think you'll guide jovian mecha in development? While currently transitioning to pumpkinseed IIs for a linemech and the current soul lines how do you think things will generally develop? Besides one offs and super ace mechs of course! I'm guessing alot of this will depend on the Avalonian reaction in the arms race, and they are transitioning doctrinally away from only paladins and knights (If I were an Avalonian it would torment me that while their initial line mech was more than a match for the Jovian one at the time there were zero specialist versions, and it's space performance, gah!). I also wonder about martian developments. Given the quest focus on mech combat (duh) is there trends in ship or small weapon combat/development we'll see too that haven't been touched on? I'm speculating heavily as well what pirate involvement will do to influence mech development for all sides. That and the sheer strategic flexibility of our captains (and their huge differences in styles and aces unhindered by enforced doctrine) will surely make a few people pay attention! Anyway to apologize for this long post have a primo gif!

>>1853879
Fuck, forgot to complete my post.

"The Six Queens of Phaeton" would be an article about how each of the waifus was responsible for how the nation of Phaeton survived beyond its infancy.

Sam is the Espionage Expert and is largely responsible for establishing various security protocols and the spy network.

Clemmy is the Combat Expert, largely responsible for the training of Phaeton's elite troops and leading incredibly difficult missions into enemy territory.

Rosita is the propaganda expert. Always knowing what to do to garner more support from Phaeton's population and an expert at spinning media releases in her favor.

Karen is the tech expert. Singlehand dly responsible for the massive advances in Mecha technology that Phaeton became known for during the Avalon War.

Fatima not only established ties with the Martians but brought a significant number of territories into Phaeton's fold. She was also particularly skilled in diplomacy and advised King Roarke in such matters.

Loriette was largely responsible for the actual statecraft that King Roarke employed. A veteran administrator and ruler, the former Countess helped the King handle his day to day governance of the state of Phaeton.

Is it what I've written accurate? I'd like to get some confrmation from you before I start writing.
>>
I kinda want to see a bachelorette party omake featuring Roarke's Waifus, Jane Mappa, Kathrine Archibald, Akai Inazuma, Inari and Pharis Sune, Mako Nunez, and Mai Uaifu.

Basically a bonus female bash of sorts.
>>
>>1853950

They are who they are, some of them have more clearly-defined roles like Fatima being Head Wife and Samantha being the one closest to Roarke's own pirates that isn't Karen and also the sneaky one, and Karen being a mechanic, and Clemmy and Fatima DO train troops...but none of them really have a defined purpose Rosita would pout if you called her a propaganda expert and just insist that she's a radiant red star in the sky or something.

It might be true later though when there's less bickering.
>>
>>1854030

Don't forget Mrs. Rachel Flint, Captain Moses Flint's wife. Or Shukriya Ahmad. Or Regina Hatsheput. You're also missing Marciana Sparna, pilot of M-Sagister.
>>
>>1854384
Hey Wong, I have a write-in idea. It's something that I couldn't articulate before. It's a follow up pre-gate intel message from Ceaser to Roarke.

"Hey man, it's Ceaser. Sorry I couldn't make the wedding, but I've been caught up in my GF's family struggles. I know I told you a thing or two about it before, but I just learned that it's worse than we thought. The Old Lady is dying, and there's nothing they can do to stop it. All the fancy med tech they can get their hand's on can only delay the inevitable. This has brought of the minefield of inheritance, and my girl is more or less the only plausible in inheritor of the various holdings. It gets even worse though. While the firm's upper staff has managed to keep it on the down low, the old bad hasn't been firing on all cylinders for a while, which put a lot of things into question, and a lot of them don't like the conclusions they've drawn. Then we add in the Major-Domo, the pink haired bitch, who clearly has an agenda of her own, and has WAY too much influence on her communications.

I'm going to be blunt. It's going to be absolutely hideous. The power struggle has already started, and Naomi has already become the ultimate prize. Considering how cut throat and high stakes it is, her "consent" is something easily brushed over. In one form or another, they all want her to fill in her mother's shoes. Some want her to actually lead, and others want to be the one pulling the strings. It's going to destroy her. And I can't let that happen.

Only a handful of them think of Naomi has her own person. Even Eusty tends to go along the lines of "needs of the many", but he's romantic enough to be nauseous about it. Pinky out right considers her a pawn. The crazy fanatic that just got introduced is too over the place to pin down. Naomi needs an advocate, and it looks like I'm the only real option. While my standing is currently rather shaky, I have Eusty's and Tabi's confidence, and the crazy bitch seems to have taking a shine to me as well. With any luck, I can throw a big enough monkey wrench into clusterfuck to make some real headway.

To borrow the Weeaboo phrase, "I will protect that smile." Even if I have to toss around some anti-matter. And I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that becomes literal."

Two weeks later.

“Ahhh! It's coming back!” Clemmy squeals, hugging your arm, “Look how big it is!” She puts her hand on the plasteel wall of the submersible, her eyes shining, as if trying to touch the humpback whale swimming by outside.

Somewhere, the stewardess is talking about the massive costs that went into constructing the Cetacean Restoration Project's orbital ocean above Europa. Made of massive, colonies filled mostly with water aside from a few floating islands with exorbitantly expensive hotels and guest accomodations, linked together, it's a shining gem of Jovian civilization and a wonder of the galaxy. Even so, the stewardess is dutifully reminding everyone that none of this would be possible without generous donors like them.

You take the hint, but the 'adopt a whale' program is a bit excessive.

It's been a lovely honeymoon. Miles had to practically bully you into not scouring Auditorium looking for Meridian yourself, although at least she managed to confirm that the Gentleman left, almost openly, on board a privately chartered transport. With all reassurances that the investigation is ongoing, you've taken the opportunity to go have some fun.

Fatima sighs, leaning her head on your other shoulder. “I always wanted to see the whales.” She remarks wistfully, “It was always supposed to be a part of my wedding, but...I never thought I'd be seeing them with someone I truly love.”

“Being a rich Martian girl just doesn't seem worth it.” Clemmy remarks, a bit tactlessly.

Fatima glowers at her, “There is a great deal of honor in preserving our civilization, a duty that comes with nobility.”

“So?” Clemmy shrugs.

Fatima glowers more, “Things used to be much worse, before Caliph Hakim and the reinterpretation of the holy Quran. At one time, its teachings were twisted, edited, and used for great evil by the minions of Shaitan.”

Clemmy rolls her eyes a little, “Sure, more history lessons...ooh! Look! What's that one?” She points.

“An orca.” Fatima harrumphs, “Roarke, you care about history, don't you?” She leans closer against you.

You pat her arm, “Of course I do, but I care more about you.”

Meanwhile, on the sumptuous bench behind you, Jane Mappa is shoving her PC into Oda's face, “See? See!?” The results of a DNA test are displayed on her holoscreen.

“Nani!? As if I can read all of that!” He harrumphs, holding up his palm against her forehead to keep her away, “It's all scientific stuff and numbers!”

“Yes! Numbers that say I'm over sixty percent JAPANESE! Plus approximately thirty percent other Oriental subgroups and nine percent Slavic!”

“Bah, barely more than half. I'm not sure your blood is pure enough. After all, I am the rightful shogun, perhaps even emperor. My people are counting on me to-” He sounds a little terrified.

“Ryan!” Jane Mappa's lower lip wobbles, “Why are you always so mean to me!?” She grabs the front of his ornate formal gi and begins shaking him.

“Yamete! YAMETE! Aniki, save me! Th-this is the evil of three-dimensional girls!” Poor Yoritomo wails, covering his face with his brawny arms.

Fatima and Clemmy look at him, exchange glances, and shake their heads simultaneously, “I'm not helping.” Fatima says, sternly, “Poor Jane. This is all your fault, Captain Oda.”

“If you want to call yourself strong, you should at least be able to handle a love interest. I MARRIED mine. Just deal with it, Yoritomo! Burn him up with your love until he acknowledges it, Jane!” Clemmy cheerfully agrees.

“L-l-love!?” Jane Mappa squeals, releasing him, “W-when did I EVER say anything about love!?”

“BAKANA! AKUMA! ONI-NEE!” Oda howls, “CLEMMY-CHAN IS EMBARRASSING ME, ANIKI!”

A demure, mousy little man in the uniform of a low-ranking Jovian official is trying to get your attention nearby.

“They're counting on you to carry on the family line, right?” You make things worse, deliberately, “The Storm Dragons, they need their Captain to carry on the royal family.” You hit him right where his weeaboo soul is, in his bachelor status, “So you need to have children.”

“I...I can clone myself...” He sputters.

“That's illegal under League law.” Fatima points out, “And you're part of Phaeton now, so it would be a crime.”

You give him a thumbs-up, “Congratulations. I remember when you were telling me how lucky I was to have a...a what did you call it...a waif?”

“Waifu!” He corrects you sternly, “An idealized woman!”

“A-Are you saying I'm a plain Jane!?” Jane Mappa sniffles angrily, “Ryan, you idiot!”

“ODA YORITOMO!” He corrects her. “I...I mean you're my childhood friend, it wouldn't be proper.”

“What's improper about Karen and Roarke, then?” Fatima has thoroughly chosen Jane's side in this, “She's a good wife to him! I still remember her threatening me with a wrench over the things I may have said in a moment of temper about him.”

“The violence shows she cares!” Clemmy agrees vigorously. The other women are enjoying the luxury hotel, it's not exactly your first time on this trip taking one of these glassteel submersibles to go look at the whales, otherwise poor Oda might have been in even more trouble.

“A-as the rightful shogun I require a proper yamato nadeshiko!” He bellows.

“A what?” Clemmy looks at Fatima.

Fatima shrugs, “I don't know. The Yamato, that's his ship, right? Named for some battleship or other? He's saying he needs a...ship wife?”

“No! He's saying he needs an ideal Japanese wife! As if I'm not GOOD enough for only winning second-place in the Praetorian Guard's annual cook-off because the judge wasn't a fan of sushi! And just because I maybe overuse blue in my ikebana flower arrangements! I happen to like that color, and those are my hobbies so...so I can do what I want!” She punches his chest.

“And then there's that shrine you won't let anyone see.” You nod solemnly.

His dark face goes pale, “Aniki, ie!”

“What shrine?” Fatima asks, confused.

“There's nothing weird about having a shrine if you love somebody.” Clemmy mutters.

Jane blinks, then looks sidelong at Oda, “...You still have that?”

He stares at her, “You knew about that!?”

“Of course! That time I followed you home!” She huffs, “You didn't even notice me at first. He had this beautiful little altar set up, but...that doesn't have anything to do with romance!” Her lower lip quivers, “Don't you dare look at him like that for honoring his dead parents with a traditional Japanese shrine!”

His shoulders slump, “I know it sounds like something is wrong with me, but...I never found a waifu. I scoured every game, visual novel, every anime, and still, none were perfect for me. I didn't want to admit it, so since it was expected I just let people think the shrine was to a particular woman.” He sighs heavily, “I'm a failure to the Home-Dwelling Sages, like a katana with no saya.”

Normally I would assume sarcasm, but you're kind of a dick. Shit man, if I didn't get into DBZ I never would have went back to get into DB because when I first saw DB I thought it was dumb kiddie shit. Which is kind of ironic.

Everyone knows Inuyasha is twice as entry level as DBZ.

“Yes, now is fine.” It seems like a good time to deal with whatever this is and change the topic, “Can I help you?” You put your hands in your pockets, into your gloves, in case this is an assassin. You WILL catch one of them alive eventually.

“Er, well, it was actually somewhat of a struggle to find you. I tried Auditorium, first, but...obviously, you weren't there. There was some confusion over where you'd gone for your honeymoon, and I kept arriving where you'd been a few days after you left. Finally, I managed to catch up to you here, but I wanted to wait until you weren't busy and had relatively few prying eyes around. My apologies. Your majesty, I have with me an invitation to a summit consisting of representatives of the SSL's valuable junior partners, along with senior administrative staff from Mars, Jupiter, and Her Radiance Pope Joan II.” He presents you with a folded letter so fancy and drenched with gold leaf that you expect it to be physically heavy. You break the seal, but the cursive writing inside is so fancy as to be nearly illegible without really sitting down and deciphering it. “Ahem, I...tried to contact you with some time between now and the summit, but alas, the tribulations of my quest proved a grievous hindrance. It is the day after tomorrow. The Planetary Chairman will, of course, be happy to reimburse you for all transportation and cover the costs of your stay here, we're rather pleased to see you enjoying the Cetacean Restoration Project. Have you considered adopting a whale, your majesty? I myself have a soft spot for the belugas.”

“Mm.” You remark noncommittally, then shrug “Alright, I'll go. But I won't commit to adopting any more strange animals. Six wives and a kingdom are more expensive than you'd think. Besides, I rather like the look of the orcas, myself.”

“Splendid!” He claps his hands, “Will you require anything special? I believe you have formal attire already?”

Fatima takes the letter and scans it, “Hm, this is definitely legitimate. For a moment, I almost believed this was a trap.”

“A trap!?” The bureaucrat looks startled, “By Jove, no! Your husband is a foreign sovereign, it would be impossible! A bill passed shortly after a...foiled...attack on the Jovian Senate officially wiped your record and those of your subordinates clean. You are no longer a criminal, your majesty.”

For now. Who knows what will happen once the war is over? Or once another Planetary Chairman is elected? You're not exactly about to start hugging people, but if they're going to attack you, luring you to a summit is a pretty convoluted way to do it.

“This says it's taking place at the Academy. Why not on the administrative colony of Palatine itself?” Fatima's voice is a little sharp.

The bureaucrat bows, “Security concerns, ma'am. The purpose of the summit is to discuss the disposition of the junior SSL members during the war, and try to find a battlefield that will serve to help you develop joint tactics between your voices. Speaking privately, part of the aim is...well...you don't have the sort of manpower that, say, Qu'lir does, but what you do have is elite pilots, a reputation as a commander, and powerful mecha. It's quite likely that your forces will be used to stiffen the spines of the natives or selectively used as an elite strike force. Hashing out the details in advance is a better plan than just...dropping you on Qu'lir or Texas. For one thing, the locals might be a bit...leery...at the presence of former space pirates without...ah...a proper introduction and...an understanding with the authorities reached as quickly as possible, ah-heh...”

“Um, excuse me...” A small voice from behind the bureaucrat timidly interrupts. “I'm glad you managed to find the Pirate King, Mister Harris, a-are you done? I...I'm sorry for following you, but I'm supposed to, um, speak with him too and...and I didn't want him to get away again.”

He turns, “Oh, there you are. Laila, wasn't it? I believe we spoke back at the hotel.”

A short girl with a pleasant face and a lacy white dress curtsies, her pink hair done up with two ribbons to gather it into a pair of floofs on the sides of her head. Her shoes are shiny, almost childlike with their blunt, rounded tips and crossed straps, “M-my name is Laila, I'm the o-official secretary for Sister Gail...I mean, Pope Joan II. It's a very big pleasure to meet you, s-sir.” Unlike her sisters, this one looks more and more like she wants to hide the longer she speaks to you, “Um, I mean, your excellency. Ah, no! That's wrong too!” She pulls her own hair, “Your MAJESTY! I-I-I'm supposed to p-present you with a p-p-proposal...” The stuttering is new too, and a little sad, since Lysa and Rosita are both singers. Her voice is cute but her nervousness makes it trip all over itself, “A...a proposal to...” She fumbles with what she's going to say, “Oh no, what was it? Ah, that can't be right, that can't be right at all! Gail is going to scold me! I can't believe I let her down!” She wails, “U-Unless you really have something called a 'Dutchman'. She wanted so many of them, too! A thousand!”

>U-Unless you really have something called a 'Dutchman'. She wanted so many of them, too! A thousand!
>A thousand!
My goodness. I can hear the credits roll in.
Well, first off let's talk calmly and look over the proposal. We do have the Dutchman, but we are working on the production lines and shoring up our forces.
Actually, what IS our production? 1000 seems like a lot, but depending on how many factories and how good they are, this could be a much easier deal.
Either way, this could really help with our money issues and can allow us to build better connections and further improve our country.
>>
>>1864955
Well with the war coming we need to do a recruitment drive and then roll the recruits we get from Phaeton into our standing army for raiding/defense.
>>
>>1864955

I think you guys actually mathed out at some point how many mecha you can simultaneously produce and how long it would take. I also feel like somewhere there's a credit-cost-per-CP listed in the books, something like 1000 per CP. If someone can find it it would be appreciated,

By the way, crafting your response to this, with perhaps another post or two for clarification purposes, is the last big decision of the night.
>>
>>1864966
Well first off what is she willing to give us for these thousand mechs?
>>
>>1864966
well, let's see. Psyche had about.. 6-8 lines, right? Each could do 50 cp a day. That is 2-3 dutchmen a day. In 2 weeks we would have 28-42 Dutchmen from Phaeton alone. If the production lines were fully going before the tourney, thats another week and another 14-21 dutchmen.
That is not including any other factories we have. We could have quite a lot of factories if Buchapres and Bahamut bailed out their factories which could further increase production. If each Factory has 3 lines, then I just need to know how many we have.
Either way, it would take years with just Psyche. If auditorium is about equal with Psyche, it become less a issue. If we have base machines and just upgrade them, it becomes even easier.

Either way, we are willing to listen, but we need to see what we have to work with. If the offer is good we will gladly work on the production.
>>
Is she expecting us to get the materials too?

>>1864990
Then we have to consider if we have enough manpower to mine all that metal and develop everything needed for the construction.

>>1864966
page 8 of the ATM shows this for cost.
>>
Plus we also need to know if they have a deadline they want the thousand before. Thinking about it that might be what fucks us.
>>
>>1864977
Also, we need to know more about the proposal, take a look at what is written. Knowing the why, how much, and what we have to work with can help. We do have a much smaller force, so having excess machines sold to the Moon would be a good idea.
>>1864995
Psyche is a giant clump of metal that can keep going for multiple lifetimes, and it becomes a way for us to get more money from them. It gives people jobs, gets them to join Phaeton and live at Psyche, and further increase our power. It is a good idea, and it does give us legitimacy. I will agree at looking at the dead line too.
>>
>>1865000
We'll have enough metal, but we have to mine it all ourself which will take time. But we also need other types of metals psyche doesn't have like copper and Aluminum most likely.
>>
>>1865003
Perhaps, but we may be able to get it. It'd be the same issues if we take the offer or not though. We will need to trade, and we will need to shore up our resources. If the belt is full of materials, we could likely get it all. Base Medium strikers would make it easier.

In the end, it will depend. If we got lots of factories, and can get the resources, this is a great way to make money at a premium. It really is a deal we need to read and understand.

“A thousand?” Your head is spinning a little, but you adjust your shades and deal with it, “We do, indeed, have a mech known as the Dutchman. Although...a thousand is quite a lot, and we could really use them to beef up our own forces...” Although you've already begun building mass-produced versions of the tourney mecha for squad leaders.

Her lower lip wobbles, “B-but...you're the Pirate King, right? You can do it, can't you?” Big, moist eyes stare hopefully up at you.

“Oi. It's not about can or can't, it's about cost.” Clemmy hisses, with a hint of jealousy.

Fatima nods, “Yes, besides the cost of production, there's materials...the necessary infrastructure that needs to be built...we're still taking possession of the military colonies the Martian and Jovian governments ceded to us...”

You blink at her, “Jovian? Wasn't it just Martians?”

She shrugs, “In all likelihood they feared how close you are to the red planet.”

“Oh, could you BE more smug about that?” Clemmy harrumphs, and kisses your cheek.

“Yes, but I won't. Instead, I'll be just as smug as I deserve to be.” Fatima tosses her hair with a proud smile, and kisses your other cheek. “It was done rather quietly, but yes, the Jovians have ceded the ones DIRECTLY under military control.”

“Fewer than you'd think, then, most of them are abandoned to begin with, there's no real need to stage attacks out of the Belt anymore and they just take up resources.” Clemmy remarks.

“R-right, so you have Dutchmen, good.” Laila nods firmly.

“Don't you have some kind of message? Do you know how much you're supposed to offer for these?” You ask her, a little worried.

“No, no. It's fine. I have a really good memory, at least once I have the thread of it. I just...thought I misremembered the name and threw myself off. Ahem.” She straightens her back, presses a hand to her chest, and extends the other like an ingenue delivering a soliloquy, “A-hem. To our dear friend His Royal Majesty Roarke Starwind of the Sovereign Kingdom of Phaeton, greetings and fond regards.” And her voice has changed completely as she speaks, it's older, still fresh and youthful, but it sounds like it comes from a woman your age, spoken in a sisterly tone. “I will spare you the formalities, both for the sake of your patience and to show that I am a serious woman...yes, Laila, and because your excellent tea would otherwise get cold. Thank you. No, don't put that part in there. Just don't say it, Laila, the Pirate King doesn't want to hear about tea.”

Clemmy snickers.

Laila cheerfully continues, “Thank you. Ahem. I was quite pleased, as a pilot of moderate skill myself...” This you know to be bullshit because Sister Gail Breenberg came up as an ace on your own level when you were researching potential candidates for the First Mate of the Green Skulls, “...to hear that a modified Lunar mech had won your tourney of officer mecha. Too often, the Holy See finds our armored crusaders ignored or shouldered aside by the Jovian duopoly or the various Martian artificers. In truth, we require a stolid, virtuous new mech for the defense of the faith and the morale of our flock, and we have selected the Dutchman...yes, Laila, that's really what it's called. It's a mythological reference of some kind. I don't know why, ask the pilot. Yes, he's apparently Catholic! Honestly, Laila! Yes, we will CONTINUE calling it the Dutchman! Take that part out too. Don't repeat it. No, I'm not angry...of course I mean it! Alright, start repeating from here. We have selected the Dutchman as the armored fist of the new Vatican Army. We will require one thousand, eventually. Bishop McAllister assures me that you are a good and noble man and worthy of trust, and as men who use their own products we can be assured of the quality of your merchandise. For now...let us say one hundred a month from the summit, and you will have our continued patronage. We will pay five times the amount of profit you would normally get from the sale of these mecha. If you are interested, please tell Laila, my trusted secretary, and we shall further discuss matters at the summit itself. May the Lord's light illuminate your path, Pope Joan II, Vicar of God.”

It is doable. If they aren't made from scratch, a lot of the parts can be taken from various things and scavvie parts. Production time would be cut down and at x5 the cost, it's not a bad idea.
The toughest part will be the first month when we set things up. After that though, the money goes straight to bolstering our economy and production. Which means we could get more lines operating and have more wiggle room.

At some point soon I'm going to take a week off and completely redo the Master Pastebin.

First, I'll make a relatively boring Ship Gallery that lists stats on the various classes of ships, including uniques like the Rhinehawk and Iulia Maesa.

Next, I'll remove the Fleet section. Instead it will list your ships by name (where applicable) and class. It's oddly easy to lose track of ships compared to mecha, I know besides those on your sheet you have two Avalonian Light Heavy Assault Ships, and don't let me forget about those. Each packs a HUGE frontal battery but no rear guns.

I'll also include a list of all of your colonies and what they do, summarized. If they have mecha production lines, those will be listed, and anything else relevant that I'm currently forgetting. Ship repair facilities are common with bigger colonies, ship PRODUCTION facilities are rare, and you currently don't have any...

...or do you? Who REALLY owns California Station?
>>
>>1865272
And the Upgrade bin?
>>
>>1865272

Also there will be a list of your mech numbers as a total rather than per-ship.

I need to find out if there are official stats for Rocs anywhere, too, and if not, build them.
>>
>>1865223
>Yes

Man I missed the whole thread do to work

>>
>>1865232
Now fully awake, the hand rubbing grows. Market value is fun. Depending on the mark up of the item, we are looking at about 130% on average. Times that by five and we have 650% of the initial price. That means, that for every Dutchman we make at cost(materials, labour, ect), we can use that money to make six and a half more dutchmen or other tourney units!
>>
>>1865949
And we could use it as a starting point to start showing the universe we're better than the megacorps insofar as how we treat our people. If we get 6.5 dutchmen worth of credits for every unit sold, we could put 1.5 into Phaeton's coffers, 2 or 3 into making more, and that leaves us with 2 or 3 that go purely into better pay/conditions/what have you for the subjects who are making our mechs.
>>
>>1865954
Indeed. In either case the money goes back into the economy either by making jobs making more mechs, or into other infrastructure.
Really, in terms of mechs, we might not have to worry about straight up production for a bit. Any frames we have that have the right parts can be upgraded to Tourney MPs and would only take a fraction of the time and cost. If stuff like sensor cores, thrusters, and the various bits are simply bought in bulk, the time to make them can be shaved off our mech construction. I'll do some quick math for how much we can shave off our production that way.
>>
>>1865968
Right then. If we have a medium striker frame from something like a Pumpkinseed or Palomino, we are cutting production time by 32 CP(the hands do not count since the G-hands are different). The sensor core and back up system is 6 cp. 4 CP from options that aren't the quick swap mounts or design and decor. Thrusters are 19 cp. Shields could likely be bought on the cheap, same with armor, so you got another 30-42 CP right there. The other stuff is a bit too fancy to make out of house(aside from the standard's heat axe or melees ball and chain), but thats 91-103 CP that can be made out of house. That takes the time to make 1 dutchman to 1 day. 2 if we don't have the frame.
>>
>>1865223
>[Yes]

>>1865949
The Luna seems to want Phaeton as an ally and they are being fairly smart on how they are "donating" to us. This might also be a series of tests by Luna.

First, can we manufacture within the time limit, and second, how will be spend our profit.
>>
>>1865992
Well, if we use the methods I talked about and don't focus on making them from scratch, Psyche can do them on it's own. with the 1 day model it'd take 12.5 days to make the month quota. 25 days for the 2 day. From scratch? We'd need more factories. It IS a great deal though. Cut the non government factories a deal and I bet we could make up the difference.
>>
>>1865954
I think its smarter to focus on developing our industry before focusing on improving worker conditions. Put 1.5 in the treasury, 3.5 back into developing our industry, and 1.5 for paying the workers. The fast we can grow our industry the strong our nation is which is key right now.
>>
>>1866050
Pretty much. We've only got a little breathing space before we go to war, and if those burned colonies are also included with the jovian colonies given to us, we will need them up and running fast. We also want to make sure our money is well spent. This is only a temporary deal. 10 months and 1000 units. Great for the short term, but we'd need to make our stuff self sustaining by the time the deal is done.
Plus side, we can compensate some additional funds and supplies by doing missions and raids.
>>
>>1866077
We also need to look into getting more men for our standing army with the war as an excuse for more militarization. Once the warriors over we keep the added manpower as defense and raiding forces since we have complete freedom to raid non SSL planets and the use of Sol's gates.
>>
How much mech manufacturing value does Psyche actually have? As in, a numerical value stated somewhere.

Secondly, how much manufacturing value do the other belt colonies have?

Thirdly, how much manufacturing ability do individual ships like the Rhinehawk have? Because I DISTINCTLY recall that Moe's Ace custom was built for him on the Jaburo.

Fourthly, how many Mustang Commandos did we salvage?

Fifthly, do we enter into negotiations about the types of Dutchmen we're providing or do we just hand over the most basic kind without any weapons?
>>
>>1866050
Agreed, thunderbird, I'm just trying to avoid even the appearance that we're going the way of Bucephalus and Bahamutcorp
>>
>>1866115
The fact we have shit talked both companies for how they treat people we should be fine. And people can speculate as much as they want but they won't be able to make a call on us until were actually set up.
>>
>>1866082
That is going to be tricky. Unless we recruit people from the planets we raid/save, Manpower is going to be slow to grow. Job opportunities can draw in more people, fame too, but it's not going to be dramatic.
Now, we could have teens and the like have mandatory military training, take in war orphans, and try to grow it that way for the long term, but we are definetly going to have to rely on immigrates, those who defect, and those who join during missions in the short.
>>1866107
1: 6-8 lines. So 300-400 a day.
2: Don't know, but likely a good amount. We'd just have to get them started.
3: Probably a good ammount, but not as fast as a production line. With a known design, it would take 2 days per 50 CP. Could probably work on a few mechs for the bigger ships like the Jaburo, Rhinehawk or Yamato. Auditorium could likely help there as well.
4: Most likely the 2 from Fairchild's squad. I think the ones near or in the ship are staying with SOUL.
5: I'm going to assume they want the whole thing, but what type will depend. They aren't complicated weapons at least.
>>1866115
When some kid loses his family due to an accident, we are going to make sure he is treated right.
>>
>>1866141
Recruiting from places you raid is generally a bad idea same as people with too much ideological differences ie Avalon allies. It'll be better to focus on quality over quantity with doing recruitment on the colonies that are now under us.
>>
>>1865186
>It wouldn't be a joke without our reputation? Like when someone pretends they're going to eat a kid, nobody immediately thinks they're really a Cannibal.

The problem is that Roarke is straight up a harem protag and everyone knows it, if he says "ay bby u wan sum fuk" people will take it seriously because hey, he already has six, what's another? Then they see that he said that to what looks like a little girl, that means he may have seriously suggested fucking a child. Just the mere idea or hint of such a thing can be disastrous for public image. Whether or not he did suggest it in jest or not is irrelevant.

Going by your analogy, what if Hannibal Lector said he would love to have you for dinner? If anyone else said that it would sound like they were inviting you over in a weird way, right? But not Lector.

Hell, even without Roarke rep as a dude who fucks everything with legs, you just don't say shit like that to little kids. Even though this isn't a little kid, she still looks like one. Very easy to stretch facts that way.

My idea is to split up component manufacturing across multiple locations. They don't need the same facilities to manufacture an entire mech as they do for a mech's arm, do they?
>>
>>1866805
They don't, but we still need to produce them. splitting the mech in multiple locations doesn't really speed up the production. Now, buying parts that are common instead of making them in house would be faster, but it will eat into profits. Not really a big issue if we are getting such a huge difference, we just need to figure out the sweet spot for that.
>>
>>1866833

It does split the wealth generated from mech production into seperate areas. This lets us provide income and colony development to the various areas and each area won't require such a large investment as if we were investing in a full mech plant at each location.

We can later also choose to see which location we wish to fully develop into fuller lines.

We also have to decide where our capital is going to be. Since we put Doan in charge of Psyche we should probably have it be either Auditorium or California station.

I figure it would be more a mayor/governor and president situation. He may run the colony, but we run the country. As is, with Psyche, Auditorium, and California, it's a case of 'do we want our seat of power be one of industry and fortified, fame and looks, or trade and neutrality.'
>>
>>1866889
Here's the thing the captial in a kingdom is directly sworn to the king and needs to be in case their is a rebellion she he can raise troops that are directly under his control and the money the town makes goes directly to him. You can't have some one else running the colony that is your capital.
>>
>>1866895
Technically, the Rhinehawk would be the capital then. It's the only one directly under Roarke's control.

A war vessel of that size would never be a floating capital. Especially since non-essential non-coms would have likely been transferred to auditorium after we settled there.

If you go by your logic the only way we can get viable labor is to have everyone fuck a whole bunch and then hope they have talented children. Yes we should focus on getting our citizens jobs first, but you should also be recruiting for less desirable positions with foreigners. Eventually they will pick up the culture from the belt, and it's not like culture isn't malleable. It will change eventually as the location becomes more desirable for various reasons.

Besides, the culture of the belt as it is is basically New York City. Fucking everyone passes through or stays so it's already a melting pot culture. The only mostly unique thing about it is the emphasis on station life rather than any terrestrial life. The vast majority of people who will migrate to Phaeton will be spacers for this reason which would lessen the "culture shock" they might experience.

Let me reiterate though that existing citizens should be prioritized but you simply cannot shun migrants. Except Green Men. They aren't allowed.
>>
>>1869041
>you should also be recruiting for less desirable positions with foreigners
Those are almost all the job in an industrial society which we are. We would be importing thousands of outsiders when our population is minuscule on the grand scale.
>Eventually they will pick up the culture from the belt
There is no guaranty of that and besides even if they do it doesn't guaranty all there descendants will or that they won't become a bigger part of the society considering you want to import them in to be your underclass.
>It's not like culture isn't malleable. It will change eventually as the location becomes more desirable for various reasons.
Aspects of culture will change but not the important central ideas and beliefs.
>the culture of the belt as it is is basically New York City
Because they were never one unified entity and were all part of other cultures and entities. Now they all have to be made to see themselves as belt natives rather than Jovians or Martians. So its more accurate to say the belt is like the early days of the German confederacy but much worse.
>The vast majority of people who will migrate to Phaeton will be spacers for this reason which would lessen the "culture shock" they might experience.
Culture shock will be a giant issue for Roarke to deal with considering he has to create a new culture to overwrite the old cultures of his subjects.
>but you simply cannot shun migrants
You can easily as has been seen in almost any nation before the last 20-30 years.
>>
And we have plenty of time to grow our population so we have no need to immediately resort to shipping in migrants. We're going to be used as a raiding force/special forces so we need to focus on quality instead of quantity. We have no fear of being invaded after the war considering we're in an alliance with everyone in the system which protects us completely. And were never going to match the amount of men Jove or Mars can muster even if we imported MILLIONS.
>>
>>1869041
A potentially source of new people would be from Loriette's and Rebecca's (unlikely) former holdings as Avalonian nobles. Depending on loyalties and current treatment, we might be able to get them to defect or even become an extrasolar colony of Phaeton.
>>
>>1869099
>extrasolar colony of Phaeton
How would we even going about defending it? And to take the idea a step further considering we're planning to continue raiding outside the system people will want to strike back at Roarke and an extrasolar colony would be the perfect target. And whose to say they will even want to fight for Roarke? We're going to war against their people and are going to be responsible for a lot of Avalonians deaths.
>>
>>1869084
We don't need every belt born citizen to be a janitor. Do you understand what I'm getting at? And if the population is so small you really CAN'T deny migrants. You NEED the population for all sorts of shit. Soldiers, labor, entertainment, all that good shit.

You can't just create a culture. It just happens. What you're suggesting is called oppression by the more sensitive types. Phaeton will always be Phaeton, even if the culture of the people in it is disjointed. The culture of the nation is changing even right now as nothing is really going on. The next few generation of belt born people are what are actually going to cement the culture of Phaeton. Roarke can't just sit down and say "this is what we believe in and our values are." and expect people to accept that unless it's already what the people believe. By just giving all these people a name for their nation is enough to spur pride and a cultural shift. Just fucking relax, basically.

>You can easily as has been seen in almost any nation before the last 20-30 years.

This is the future in space. Even now being prejudiced is frowned upon by most "civilized" places. Barring a wide-spread social stigma like hatred of Green Men and by extension their Avalonian followers you can't reject people like that.

And then you get into the personal aspect of it, Roarke does want the belt to be the belt, but Roarke also highly respects personal freedoms and is a rather progressive and open thinker. It would be hard to convince me that Roarke would simply not give people seeking a different or better life a chance.

Simply making it illegal for non citizens to live in your nation, which is the law in almost every single nation, yes you can deny migrants easily.

You can just create a culture it happens all the time. You think the constitution didn't immediately effect the predominant culture of the US?

You can reject any group you want who you feel are not a proper part of your nation and considering their are wide spread social stigmas against genetically engineered humans and Avalonians, yes we shouldn't have them in our nation.

And you think importing an underclass from outside the system is in character for Roarke? Roarke has always put his men before outsiders. And considering how many assassination attempts he's had on him yes I think we would stop being so trusting of outsiders who he is going to WAR WITH.
>>
>>1869161
No shit you ship out illegals. Don't be dumb. You know what I meant.

Everything they put into the constitution was shit people already generally believed in. Pretty much all of it was just ensuring people had their own personal freedoms. It's not like they put in the constitution "No one is going to eat pudding. For pudding is the Devil." they put things in there that the people already mostly wanted due to their already strong sense of independence. The constitution did not suddenly make everyone want to keep their guns. And the stuff people did not really care about that was outlined in it they mostly ignored. And what the constitution created were laws and guarantees, not a culture. The culture that formed down the line was heavily influenced by it, yes, but it did not suddenly shit out babies that loved eagles and wanted to drink their beers while shooting at squirrels from their trucks.

And as I said, without an existing social stigma, you can't just deny people. You need that preexisting prejudice to justify having that without seeming like a dick. North Korea is a good example of this, or at least an incredibly obvious and easy one. And when it comes to Qui'lir, most people will see the cat ears and go "fucking muties reee" but Roarke himself wouldn't. So why would Roarke enact such a stupid law? To placate his population, maybe, sure, but Roarke isn't some schmuck who's going to pussyfoot around the issue, to me he's more likely to tell people to suck it up and grow a pair.

Nigga I have said multiple times PHAETON FIRST is the plan, then fill in the gaps. God damn Thunder, stop acting so stupid, I know you're not this dumb.

>Roarke has stated his dislike for Avalonians before even if they don't worship the lady. Lori has been the except to the rule.

Which is why the examples of migration I gave centered around Qui'lir and not Avalon. Which is why the example I gave for a viable group of people to refuse were Avalonians. C'mon Thunder.

>>1869200
There will always be gaps. And there will be more of them once we expand our industrial sector. We can actually make more jobs than we have people, and that is very likely to happen if we push hard into expanding industry. As it stands RIGHT NOW, Phaeton is mostly balanced with the population to work ratio so to speak mainly because people were shipped out for jobs rather than there being too many people born and not enough jobs. Obviously there is an underclass population and a lot of crime, we can fix that pretty quickly though since we are now a sovereign nation and have a lot less red tape than most others since we're currently the de facto power.

Immigration is not a bad thing and it definitely has its place. Especially since we don't even have a standing army so much as a very small group of unprofessional former criminals as a fighting force. Most of our current population IS in the industrial sector, we can't have them go to war AND go to work. And the criminals and underclass we currently have that we COULD send to war aren't enough to have a significant force. We need a policing force as soon as possible, which you don't really want criminals for that. And most of the underclass in these colonies are criminals, or just a step above. It's not an easy balancing act getting everything secure and keeping the industrial sector going with such a small and already allocated population.
>>
>>1869290
>significant force
We are expected to be a task force and used for our elite units and powerful aces along with experience with raiding and Roarke's intimidation value. The forces we have now are what they are planning to use, not expectings to field an army.
>>
>>1869290
I'm fine with the idea of immigration for skilled people.

I just don't think it's a good time for anything more than that. Importing people during a large conflict, doesn't seem smart, especially with the "Well we can send them to war!" part

Either you're sending your natives to go die in war while the immigrants get to stay back with cozy jobs, or you're saying "Hey, come move here so we can immediately draft you into our war machine thanks."

It just seems like a concern that should come up more later on, when we aren't in a war and aren't in a ridiculously tenuous political position.
>>
>>1869301
And then sending them to fight people they are a part of or like better than us.
>>
>>1869298
Are you saying you don't want to train an army for AFTER this war? Or for if the war drags on? You're thinking NOW which isn't a problem in and of itself but you still need to think of later.

>>1869301
Yeah I probably should have clarified I don't mean right at this very moment. That was my bad.
>>
>>1869318
Alright, knowing you don't mean immediately helps a lot.

I think the remainder of the concern that Soundy has is that Phaeton is pretty damn small right now - we'd have to let in a lot of immigrants, and hope that all of them are willing and able to be well-trained, disciplined soldiers, industrial workers and police.

The idea that we could import, arm and train enough people to significantly raise our combat viability is a bit far fetched, and even if we did go out of our way to do that, that'd be a lot of people coming in.
>>
>>1869318
Considering that after the war the only reason we need our army is raiding and cleaning up the belt of anyone not under us. Yes I don't think we need a massive army immedietly and we can take our time building up our nation and its population. And if the war drags on then we tell Jove and Mars that we don't have enough people to raise.
>>
>>1869332
Yeah it's not feasible to draft that many immigrants. But we do need Phaeton to grow and if we pour a ton of effort into that we can certainly outgrow the population's natural growth.

Does Phaeton even have any reputable academies or schools? I know there's gotta be a few universities but I don't recall any big name ones being mentioned in the belt.

>>1869334
Not having a standing army is inviting people to fuck with you. Especially in the event of a Martian/Jovian split which is something we can't rule out considering Hakim is going to die and doesn't have any actual heirs and I doubt any of his successors have the balls to cow his planet like he can.

Hell, maybe even a new threat from even further out in the galaxy, or another galaxy. Far-fetched but not impossible. But you only need to be wrong once, you know?
>>
>>1869361
You don't need a giant standing army when you have Jupiter, Mars, and the rest of the planets in Sol bound to defend you in the case of war. And if Mars and Jove split guess what? We aren't going to have enough men to fight them no matter how many people we get.
>>
>>1869365
You want a standing army, so you can take sides in the event they split. And you want a standing army even if you have big allies just so that no one can just straight fucking bumrush you since you have minimal combat assets. I'm not saying you need a huge standing army but having a token force of a handful of battleships to patrol and cover the entire belt means you may as well never have your ships leave port for anything other than beer runs.

And how the fuck are you going to act like a fierce independent and them claim you're going to piggyback on Jupiter or Mars for protection? Real strong showing, there.
>>
>>1869243
Beachheads and the forward operating bases they can become are actually very important for long range wars. We will not be able to just hop straight back to the belt to resupply.

>>1869250
No way with current forces, but the addition of defectors loyal to Loriette and therefore Roake that would change also.

Spun the correct way neither Mars nor Jove can actually claim the land if they recognize it as liberated territory of Phaeton and would be politically obligated in assisting in its defense.

>>1869334
After the war we are more likely to need a significant military force to avoid being bullied by Mars and/or Jove. Do not believe that this summit we have been invited to is just about deployment organization. The other Junior parties likely see us a the birth of a new major political entity in the Sol system.
>>
>>1869393
Lori has been stripped of her land by their queen and their God after going rogue and marrying a Solar pagan. Don't expect many people to defect over to Lori.

We have to take our time building up our forces and nation. And Mars and Jove can't afford to bully Roarke much because if either side uses to much force they push Phaeton firmly on the others side when war comes so as long as Roarke can play them against each other they can't do much.
>>
>>1869407
>Lori has been stripped of her land by their queen and their God after going rogue and marrying a Solar pagan. Don't expect many people to defect over to Lori.

We won't know until we visit the lands. Lori's popularity with her former subjects might be greater than whomever was granted them after she was Deposed. Deposing a popular figure and replacing them with an unpopular figure is actually a very good way to get a faction ready to rebel.

There is also something skeezy with how Lori was excommunicated. Turpin came far to fast considering Lori was technically on the auction block 1 day before.

>And Mars and Jove can't afford to bully Roarke much because if either side uses to much force they push Phaeton firmly on the others side when war comes so as long as Roarke can play them against each other they can't do much.

Actually they still can and it is easier is some ways now that Phaeton is a single political entity instead of a bunch of independents. Until Phaeton is an entity nearly equal to them both Mars and Jove have ways of bullying.
>>
>>1869616
>There is also something skeezy with how Lori was excommunicated. Turpin came far to fast considering Lori was technically on the auction block 1 day before.
We've had Lori in our capture for at least half a year it seems. Its not that shocking this happened.
>Actually they still can and it is easier is some ways now that Phaeton is a single political entity instead of a bunch of independents. Until Phaeton is an entity nearly equal to them both Mars and Jove have ways of bullying.
If they weren't going to be fighting each other tooth and nail to get Phaeton on their side and having the other side constantly trying to ruin their plans then you would have a point. And getting on their level would literally take decades to centuries considering the manpower and industry they have.
>>
>>1869365
You do realize that the only reason that Jupiter and Mars let us have the belt is so they don't have waste manpower they could use elsewhere to hold it, right? Phaeton is convenient for them, nothing more.

We're going to need an army, even if it's just a a couple of defensive fleets.
>>
>>1869774
Do you remember the whole conversation we had with Hakim about the belt?
>>
>>1869626
>We've had Lori in our capture for at least half a year it seems. Its not that shocking this happened.

No. It caught most of the Avalon contingent who were in system off guard. Threat of excommunication and threat of seizure of assets might have been expected, but what happened was to much to fast.

>If they weren't going to be fighting each other tooth and nail to get Phaeton on their side and having the other side constantly trying to ruin their plans then you would have a point.

Them fighting to get Phaeton on their side and them using their weight to get what they want from us are not mutually exclusive. Neither of them will be just throwing massive piles of carrots at us. There will be sticks if we don't fully behave.

> And getting on their level would literally take decades to centuries considering the manpower and industry they have.

I think you are vastly overestimating things.

>>1869778

>>

I never said they were going to not use the stick. Its just they can't go too hard because then Roarke sides with the other side and they have to be sneaky or else the other side will know their doing it which will get opposed by the other side to pervent the belt for fighting for them. And I think your vastly underestimating how difficult and time consuming it is to turn a backwater with a small population into a powerhouse to match a planet and all their territory. But lets be honest we're not going to get anywhere with this until Wong gives us some more info about Phaeton and its status.
>>
>>1869799
Honestly, I actually see the Moon being a possible source of volunteers and recruits. With this deal, our neutral nature, and the Pope giving us the ok, people, mercs, and soldiers who couldn't join the Papal army could join us to get into the war. Those who like neither Jupiter or Mars may join us as a third option, and focusing on a merit based system could help.
If a group defects to us, treat them like that ship full of Lancers. Have a senior crew watch them, test them, and integrate them, then see if their merits pull through.

Those people would make shitty space pirates.

> The culture of the nation is changing even right now as nothing is really going on.

In that people who privately viewed themselves as citizens of Colony X Vaguely Associated with Mars/Jupiter now view themselves as citizens of Phaeton. Martians and Jovians are groups that already existed in the Belt, and you want to bring in people from totally disparate cultures.

That is implicitly what Roarke has done so far. It's also a good argument against migrants with different values.

You literally can. You say "you aren't allowed in." If they don't listen you beat them up with the Knuckle Kaiser.
>Roarke...is a rather progressive and open thinker

He really isn't. He's a pirate. A pragmatic one, but one with the whole "my crew first" mindset. Progressivism went the way of the dodo in-setting after it wrecked Europe. There's a reason why there are no Protestant power centers, and it's because the whole "people with no stake in your culture will totally be fine because they help the ECONOMY, you see, if we just invite them in en masse to be our soldiers and laborers" bullshit destroyed Europe. Fatima is literally descended from the first Muslim member of the British Royal Family. Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism nearly went too, and if it hadn't been for the nuclear war neither might still exist, but they fused into the Reformed Catholic Church instead.

Furthermore, personal freedoms, while Roarke values them judging by the choices the players made, do not mean refugees can just waltz into your country because they want to be there. Especially economic migrants looking for "a better life" unearned.

Thunderbird's right. It's a stupid idea to just take in whoever wants to come.
>>
>>1869221

Honestly, Avalonians would make better migrants than the Qu'liri. Avalonians are used to following strong leaders, are willing to die for a cause, and value martial excellence and civilized manners. Those that were sworn to Loriette (or in the case of Magnarus, swore to serve Roarke) take their duty seriously. The Qu'liri, by contrast, have a large population of laborers, farmers, and the service industry along with the potential for racial grievances.
>>
>>1869240

Loriette's lands were handed over to Tabitha Roosevelt. "liberating" them would mean the SSL has landed on the Avalonian capital world of Lorien and that the war is basically done.
>>
>>1870175
It does help that of the nations in the SSL, Phaeton has the better record when it comes to hostages and dealing with Avalonians, even if it's as the one that doesn't burn them at the stake. It was a smart move by Eustace. If the people value the strong, then if all else fails have them go to the strong leader of the winning side who would want people of merit and can be incredibly loyal.
>>
>>1869380
>>1869318

In my country, street gangs like MS-13 frequently have their members join the military for training they can use against cops and rival gangs when they get out, the mafia does it too. Drafting completely untested immigrants and arming them is a recipe for disaster.

You know what you're asking for? The same situation Rome was in when they had entire legions of colonial troops just go "nah, we don't care", or "nah, we're Christian now". Unify the belt before you start taking other nations' undesirables and giving them free mecha.
>>
>>1869820

The big issue is that you're all arguing on different timeframes. There's no way short of importing retarded amounts of people and hoping for the best that you'll be even close to being Jupiter or Mars, and frankly, it's foolish to try to just out-muscle them. Use what you have. Generations from now, maybe, but if you import so many people the belt will just be Mini Qu'lir instead of Phaeton. It's not worth it. Especially with one person wanting to import enough random people for a standing army and other people only wanting skilled immigrants.

Sometimes I forget you have the entire history of the setting as a satire of current events. I really can't debate any of this with you since WoG and all but still you're letting quite a bit of personal prejudice into your argument which would make actually arguing with you turn into actual arguing. No offense, we all do it. Still though, you go straight into the "gas em" territory immediately at the word migrant is kind of saddening. Always sucks when someone has seen some shit and it twists them that hard.

>Current events
Its happened plenty before right now, its just easier for people to understand because its right in front of their eyes.

The muslim bit is straight up a jab at the past decade.

The ones you have, at least, were abandoned by their nation and sworn to your wife. She says they're trustworthy, it's up to you to believe them or not.

Other Avalonians, well, that depends on how things shake out, doesn't it?

>>1870213

Don't retreat into that crap. If you had a point that wasn't an appeal to an ideology that is visibly already not working I'd acknowledge it. It's not like this setting doesn't have a whole planet of Muslims running a functional society or anything. Progressivism just does not stand up under scrutiny, it's based entirely on feelings and dogma, on playing on empathy. Look at what you yourself said. "We CAN'T keep them out." Why not? It's your country. There is no moral arbiter saying that after you've been infiltrated by assassins a few times already you have to just throw the gates open. Everything I said about the setting's history came up earlier in the quest at least once, and would be a valid excuse for Roarke not to make the Belt a liberal wet dream.

Now, maybe I was a little harsh, but drop the condescension, and tell me why, using logic, Phaeton needs migrants from underdeveloped planets that needed the SSL and Avalon to fight their wars for them.
>>
>>1870208
Well, as said before in quest, 'A god can be many things, but it can't go mad'. Depending on how Caesar's stuff goes, we could shake the foundation. After all, we do have proof that the people are able to convert under the right circumstances. Just a matter of finding said right circumstance.
>>1870213
Well, in this situation, he is right. Our economy and infrastructure is still being stabalized. We don't have the structure to handle a flood migrants just yet. We could likely take in those of merit and are capable, but not every tom and dick who wants to ride a harpy.
In terms of the policy though, I am bit more leniant than thunderbird. We do have cases of Avalonians willing to join us, though peppering them into groups so you don't have Avalonian clusters forming could be a good idea.
>>
>>1870244
The only person we've ever seen that has converted is Lori and she still looks up to the lady. One person doesn't disprove a rule. And you have to imagine Roarke will probably play a big part in killing off Avalons best aces considering he's one of Sol's best and will be used for that purpose. Its just not smart to trust them to join us after a war that is going to leave them a territory of a Solar power.
>>
>>1870248
Lori, Magnus, Lori's knight, Tabitha is showing signs, as is Eustace, Hector's girlfriend called it out on Qu'Lir, we have had multiple people question or reject the lady. Even Bruce's Girl, who is an ex pally rejected her. While Roarke will likely kill Aces, it still is wise to keep some structure there for the country. With Caesar, we can likely do so.
>>
>>1870262
>Magnus, Lori's knight, Tabitha is showing signs, as is Eustace, Hector's girlfriend called it out on Qu'Lir, we have had multiple people question or reject the lady
Roarke hasn't talked to them or as far as we know, know about them. You can't use OOC knowledge from other characters perspectives to justify your character doing something. Granted Caesar could have told Roarke about their being two factions in Avalon but its not proof that they are against the Lady.
>>
>>1870230
I'm not being condescending. Clearly though I'm bad at talking.

But you know what, you're right, it doesn't explicitly need migrants. But then again neither does any place anywhere. On a 100% logical platform there is literally nothing to gain but cheap labor which you could find elsewhere probably through prison labor.

I'm obviously coming in on an argument that has been going on in the past threads judging by what everyone is saying. Maybe a good idea to go back and read the chat.

Only slightly frustrated that people take everything I say and immediately go to the extreme with it as if that's what I was implying.

It's whatever though.
>>
>>1870265
Except even then we have Magnus, Lori's knight, and Bruce's girlfriend. That is still more than just Lori.
>>
>>1870287
Do you think Roarke has ever sat down and had a conversation with Magnus or Lori's knights? All we have is her word that their to be trusted. I do trust her but she could easily be being lied to by her men. Hell they joined us before we declared war on Avalon so who knows what their really thinking.

Briefly reanimating but I would think Magnarus values duty above religion.
He is a 'praise the lady' sort but he'll follow through on orders.
He's an adult and he made the conscious decision to swear himself to Roarke and Phaeton and in doing so siding with the SSL, if he were to go to the frontlines of the war he would fight Avalon, he won't like it, but he'll fight.

Now if he were to be forced to fight his sisters that would be a different story but that isn't relevant.

The last decade happened, and it's still happening. Pretending it's all going great and nothing went wrong is just closing your eyes, sticking your fingers in your ears, and wishing. It's not as if the future I'd like to see is going to happen either, mecha or not. Don't forget, there IS no United States of America in this setting anymore. It stopped existing. Jupiter claims it as part of their heritage, but they also claim Rome. Arguably the globalists won.

>>1870265

Roarke knows something is going on, at least, because the Duke told him so. He's seen three Paladins (four counting Tabitha who he doesn't even recognize) doubt the Lady.

>>1870268

I made it a little personal too, don't kick yourself for it. That said, comparing migration in the 21st century to this time period is comparing apples to oranges. There's far greater automation and not as much push for cheap agricultural labor (as in the states), or social virtue points to prove Europe is as multicultural as America (as in Europe). There's also not really a third world so close at hand, you might have people coming from Jupiter or Mars, but for the most part that's a similar culture to what's already in the belt (ironically Muslim migration to the Belt is among the least controversial kinds).

Maybe that's progress?

>>1870308

One strong point of Avalonian culture is that they've internalized the idea of "I might like someone, even love them, and still have to fight them to the death because of duty." The tragedy of that sort of conflict appears regularly in their stories and songs, and stems partially from the civil wars in their history and partially from the feudalistic nature of their society where you might have cousins sworn to different lords fighting to the death over a point of honor.

That's one thing Rudolph Merrow noted, too, the Green Men never fought that way. They hated war, they didn't romanticize it or study it as a hobby. To them it was a profoundly unpleasant thing they were "forced" into, and to his mind, looked at in the way an exterminator might look at bugs. A job to be done quickly and efficiently, squashing as many as possible.
>>
>>1870325
Speaking of Avalonians and what they do, did their use of the Earth gate gave reason for the Pope to get more mechs? She seems pretty fighty and they did pass by easily. Would likely be part of the reason the pricing for the dutchmen is so high. If 1 cp is 1k, then taking in the 1.3x markup for market price, we are looking at 770,000 credits of profit for each mech once you take away the cost to make them.
>>
>>1870325
Haven't we already been recruiting tons of people though?

>The last decade happened, and it's still happening. Pretending it's all going great and nothing went wrong is just closing your eyes, sticking your fingers in your ears, and wishing.

Yes but there's nothing you or I or any individual here can do alone to change it, and there are too many people who won't act that'll stop anything a small group of people could do. I mean, unless someone here is secretly a prime minister or president or something? No? Personally I want more restrictions on refugees and immigrants right now just because of this bullshit going on. I'm almost to the point of wanting to put them all in camps until shit calms down because I don't want them to bring their shit to me and mine but I understand getting your head chopped off at home is pretty goddamn terrible for them. What I really want to do is just glass all the current problem areas of the world. And then I take a step back because that's some fucked up shit. Kim Jong Lardass needs to go, though. That dumbass megalomaniac is just trouble and his family is keeping an entire nation destitute.

Honestly it's just impossible to debate logic in a fictional world. Shit, it's even pointless to debate it in reality because people are anything but. One could say Mars or Jupiter could pressure Phaeton to keep its gates open but at the same time say they would do nothing since they don't want to rock a very unstable boat so they'd respect sovereign laws, for now. Any argument anyone could make could be unmade just as easily because of what a precarious position it is.

Would first second and third world even be a relevant descriptor this far in the future? I guess you could just redefine the terms. There is no soviet union in space, after all. At least there better not be. At the very least we know there aren't any Nazis on the dark side of the moon (albinism not included).

On another note has anyone tried that Divinity original sin 2? Been seeing ads for it.

>I made it a little personal
This is kind of a recurring theme in MSPQ threads, bringing up your politics. It's not something I recall seeing any other QM ever doing, and it seems like it kinda hurts the work.

I mean, the occasional hamfisted political reference you can roll your eyes at and move on, but whenever I see you give your thoughts on recent events or get in a soapbox kind of mood and give another speech about your political outlook or argue with one of the anons over theirs I find myself wondering if someone so clearly passionate about their beliefs will give in to the temptation to drop any pretence of nuance and just make the story about those beliefs, or at least work them in in a far more tangible way. This seems even more likely now: a larger than life space pirate punching things in his giant robot is hard to fuck up, but now Roarke literally runs his own country and the matter of politics is inescapable.

I dunno, I just find that whenever a work becomes a mouthpiece for the writer's beliefs it tends to get a whole lot less entertaining because you're getting a thinly veiled lecture instead of a story. I know that considering this a possibility shows an appalling lack of regard for your integrity as a writer, but...well, I just can't find much of that in myself. Sorry. To be clear, it's not about your specific beliefs but about your ability to keep them in your pants. I can maintain a distinction between author outlook and narrative, I just don't know if you can, at least not for much longer.
>>
>>1870589
I honestly don't care. He has explained the reasons why and in setting they do make sense. They are not blantant as they seem to you, and honestly, everyone throws their beliefs at this as well. Saying he shouldn't say his beliefs or explain his when politics and heads smack against each other is just going to bring forth more issues.
Also, in terms of what IS happening, his view points have shown faults in game as well so I wouldn' say that those who have his views are considered 'always good'.

It depends.

If you're attracted to a particular girl, and it turns out she's a trap, that's not gay.

But if you're attracted to a particular girl BECAUSE she's a trap, that's gay.

As yes, Schrodinger's Trap. The prinicpal that it's a girl so long as the pants are closed.
