The journey in the truck was uncomfortable to say the least. The truck itself obviously hadn't been built for extended off-road travel, in spite of this however, the ride was good enough that you and the rest of the "cargo" were not thrown about too much.

Said "cargo" in the back being yourself, Logan, the prisoners and a few Jerry cans.

The prisoners looked up at you and Logan with a mixture of expressions. The sergeant, the one who's blade Logan was currently carrying, glared at the both of you with resentment. He was angry at how he had been defeated in his time of honour, but he knew that there was nothing that he could do now. The machine gunner on the other hand looked frantically around, squirming a bit as he attempted to break his binds. He wouldn't get through them for a while, the fact that his arms had been tied behind his back only making it harder for him to escape. Even if you didn't factor in both yourself and Logan blocking the only way out with a sword and shotgun respectively. The final prisoner, a random rifleman, also looked worried. But unlike the machine gunner next to him, he did not struggle to get free. He had guessed correctly that running would be a terrible idea.

Regardless, since having taken the the truck from it's former owners, the trip had begun moving at a greatly increased pace. Kyouko had moved along roads where possible, and through the forrest when you had to avoid a checkpoint. The roads themselves had been very empty, not that there were many cars to begin with in this rural part of China. But even then you had expected a few ox-drawn carts to be moving along the roads as farmers moved their crops and wares about. You had a few ideas as to what the explanation could be, but you doubted that you would get a concrete answer for a while at least.

"So, who should we question first?" Logan asked as the stolen sword at his hip smacked against the wood of the bench.

>The sergeant, rank usually grants increased access to information.
>The machine gunner, he's the jumpiest and the most likely to spill.
>The rifleman, the ones that seem the most complaint are usually the ones with the most to hide.

You simply cocked your head towards the machine gunner, the man being too focused with his restraints to bother looking up at you. Logan glanced over at the man, before looking back at you.

"You do realise that they don't speak English. Right?" Logan stated bluntly as you looked back out the truck, the cloud of dust that was kicked up by your transit was surprisingly large. The roads themselves were surprisingly dry.

"Their sergeant does. So it would be best to keep our conversations guarded." You replied bluntly. The sergeant hadn't said anything singe you had last spoke to him, and that suited you just fine.

"If you say so." Logan just shrugged as you pulled out your canteen and took a swig from it. "How are you gonna question them?"

"Kyouko's the only one of us who knows Japanese. She'll do the talking, one of us will watch the perimeter while the other watches the prisoners." You explained simply, while you were sure that the chances of your squad being found was slim to none, it didn't hurt to be sure.

"When are we going to stop?" Logan asked right off the back of your answer. You let the question hang for a bit as you sipped your water.

"When Kyouko stops." You replied vaguely as you put the canteen away. As it turned out however, Kyouko didn't stop for another hour. Half of which was spent pushing the truck down overgrown pathways and into the gaps between the trees. A sizeable distance away from the main road that you had been travelling on. When the truck finally came to a stop, it was in the middle of the forest. The truck came to a stop and Kyouko cut the engine, there was no point in leaving it running.

As soon as the vehicle had come to a stop, you made your way deeper into the truck and began to offload the jerry cans. Each can containing either petrol or clean water. Neither of which you wanted to be left in the truck with the prisoners. By the time you had completed the small trip, Kyouko was already opening up the bed-door for you. You passed the jerry cans to her, before turning back and grabbing the rest. All in all there were 4 cans, 2 for fuel and 2 for water.

As you passed the final can down to Kyouko, you looked over at the prisoners. All of them were watching you, probably because you were the only person actually moving around. Logan simply remained in his seat, staring at them with his shotgun in hand. You glanced over at Logan and gave him an nod, before then walking over to the prisoners and selecting your first victim.

The man began to yell in Japanese as you dragged him out of the truck, you ignored him as you dragged him out and tossed him to the ground. The 2 foot drop winding him enough that he shut up.

"So, should we do this the easy way, or the hard way?" Kyouko asked as you dropped out of the truck. Your rifle slung over your shoulder again.

"That's up to you." You replied as you carried the bound soldier a few meters away from the truck. Kyouko trudging behind you. You tossed the man to the ground next to a stream where Kyouko gestured, who was carrying a jerry can a whiff of lingering petrol coming from the cap of the jerry can.

"Good, now hold his legs up just a bit." Kyouko ordered as she set the jerry can down and pulled her pistol. The prisoner instantly stopped shaking and stared as Kyouko flicked off the safety. You had no issue as you simply held the man's feet at waist level.

"What now? Are you going to burn him or something?" You asked as you rolled your shoulders. While you weren't exerting yourself much, you didn't want to have to keep holding the soldier by his boots for a few hours.

"Just hold him still." Kyouko said simply as she knelt down, and wrapped one of the tunics taken from one of the dead soldiers around the machine gunner's face. She then stood up straight, and held the man's head in place with a boot to the forehead.

And then, she began to pour water on him.

You had heard of this method before. You had read about it during training, and had even been subjected to it during the resistance to torture section of training the method was called waterboarding. While you had never seen the reich perform the practice in person, they apparently used it in the field. The process essentially simulated the feeling of drowning, and could be repeated ad infinitum provided that there was a decent supply of water. While you didn’t like the idea of torturing someone, you understood that it was necessary right now.

And when it came to torture methods, waterboarding was one of the least severe. It didn’t leave any scars, physical scars at the very least.

As the water splashed against the man’s face, he tried to shake and squirm away from the stream of tainted water. But with Kyouko putting her boot on his forehead, he couldn’t move. The oily water cutting off his airways. After a minute or so, the man began to stop shaking, the lack of oxygen starting to knock him unconscious. However, Kyouko stopped before he could slip into unconsciousness. She put the jerry can down and took the tunic off the man’s face, and started talking to him in Japanese. You both simply stood there idly as the man spluttered and coughed up the water. After a few seconds, as Kyouko was about to put the rag back over the man’s face to begin the torture again, he coughed up a frantic answer. Kyouko simply nodded, and looked up at you.

“What do you want to ask him?” She asked, her voice having taken on a hard edge.

"Ask him why his patrol was so far out here, where are they based out of and for general information about local bases." You replied, deciding to hold off on the kidnapping question for now. Kyouko relayed the question to the prisoner, who was currently trying to cough up the bastardised water. For a couple of seconds after the question, the man continued to splutter and cough up the vile liquid, until Kyouko grew tired of his lack of speaking and moved to return the tunic to his face. Then he began to speak.

You we never good at languages, not when compared to your siblings anyways. Learning English was trouble enough, even with learning both at school and at home. You couldn't be bothered with learning more than a pair of languages. So the torrent of babbled Japanese washed over you like the frantic squealing of a dying pig. The few minutes they took conversing dragged on for longer than you would have liked, to the point where your arms were getting a bit more tired.

Finally however, Kyouko looked up and reported to you. "His unit was based out of Puing, they were detached from the thirtieth division in Korea to supplement the Kwantung Army in hunting down communist rebels. The rebels have been attacking Japanese patrols and bases with petrol bombs and explosives, the Japanese Army just recently attacked a rebel base near to Héyuán, they've been patrolling farms and lakes to try and catch any rebels while they try to resupply. Every town has a small base that contains a platoon's worth of men, though they are not equipped with much, mostly just machine guns and trucks. The larger bases have tanks and heavy machine guns, there is a supply base at Hengyang and an airbase at Nan-hsiung, near to Chenzhou." Kyouko reported as you looked back to the truck, where Logan was standing outside, looking in with his shotgun ready.

"And what does he know about the mass disappearance of civilians, is the IJA taking them?" You asked the man, letting Kyouko translate it for you. The man simply shook his head and spoke again in Japanese.

"He doesn't know, the number of people walking around the cities has gone down but he just attributed it to the increase in terror attacks." Kyouko translated, before putting her hand on her holdstered pistol. "Should we ask him anything else, or should we get rid of him?"

"Knock him out, we'll ask the others the same questions to corroborate the story before deciding what we'll do with them." You decided, before dropping the prisoner's bound legs to the dirt below. The prisoner had a second to look relieved, before Kyouko took her boot off his head and kicked him in the top of the head, the man lurched for a second before falling slack.

"I'll refill the can while you take this idiot back to the truck and pick out the next one." Kyouko explained as she picked up the jerry can and made for the stream. You picked the limp body up by the scruff of his neck and began dragging him back to the truck. Part of you was definitely not alright with torturing prisoners for information. But at the same time, rumour had it that the Japs would rather die than surrender, so chances were that they wouldn't be the kind to simply talk because you asked them nicely.

Besides, as torture went, waterboarding was definitely not the worst.

"How'd it go?" Logan asked as you walked over and tossed the prisoner into the back of the truck. You grunted in responce as you hauled yourself into the truck.

"We didn't get much, which is bad news for these two." You cocked your head towards the other two prisoners as you hauled the unconscious one next to his comrades. The two prisoners starred at their unconscious friend, before looking up at you as you decided who to take next.

Deciding to go simply in the order of the line, you chose to question the rifleman next. Unlike the machine gunner however, he didn't make a noise as you picked him up and dragged him to the back of the truck. The first sound from him since he had woken up was pained grunt as he hit the ground below the truck. You didn't throw them out of the truck out of malice, nor out of laziness. Your every move was calculated to try and ware them down just a bit before Kyouko had her fun. You hauled the rifleman up by the scruff of his tunic and dragged him to where the machine gunner had once lay, the damp patch of earth where the previous prisoner had been tortured now stained by the streaks of leftover oil that once were in the jerry can. Kyouko was already waiting for you, lent up against a nearby tree.

"Here you go." You stated simply as you flopped the prisoner to the ground and rolled him onto his back. Kyouko didn't respond, instead she silently walked over and wrapped the still damp tunic around the soldier's face as you picked up his legs to induce the angle needed to properly waterboard someone. Just like before, Kyouko held the man's head in place with her boot and began to pour the water. After a minute of spluttering and squirming from the torture, Kyouko stopped and took the now soaked tunic from the man's face, giving him a chance to breath once-more as she asked him her questions.

When no answer came for a good 30 seconds, Kyouko returned the tunic to the man's face, and continued to torture. He once again began to squirm and choke, unable to breath through the torrent of water and unable to escape. Once the can was finally empty, Kyouko took the tunic off the man's face and knelt down to ask him the same questions again. He coughed up water for a few seconds, before giving an answer.

Whatever the answer was, Kyouko certianly didn't like it. As she scowled down at him, before breaking his nose with an elbow to the man's face. The wet snapping sound and spray of blood marking the brutal act, and was followed by a choked cry from the man. Kyouko kept scowling as she stood up and picked up the jerry can.

"Watch this asshole for me while I fill up the can." She ordered, before stomping off to the nearby stream. You simply dropped the man's legs and fished about your pocket for a cigarette. You knew that this particular vice was appalling, but like most other vices, it was fine with moderation.

"German... you disgrace your home." The prisoner stated from the ground before you in your native tongue, earning him your attention.

>"Nothing I could possibly do could drag them down further than they have already fallen."

"Nothing I could possibly do could drag them down further than they have already fallen." You stated matter of factually as you pulled out the box of cigarettes from your pocket. You had won them during a poker match on the Thornback. You had also won a porn mag and a bottle of smuggled beer, but you lost the former in a following poker match. Regardless, you pulled out a cigarette and lit it with a flick.

"And that excuses your use of torture? You should be ashamed of yourself!" The Jap spat as you smoked your cigarette. You glanced back towards Logan, who was glancing around the perimeter for any interlopers.

"Do you want to know how not to get tortured? I'll give you a good piece of advice!" You offered as you looked back down to the soldier, who was glaring up at you. His nose still streaking blood down his face.

"Let me guess, you're going to suggest that I just tell you what you want to know?" The soldier guessed in a mocking tone. You simply shrugged in response.

"That's pretty much the gist of it. We only want to corroborate some information." You shrugged as you exhaled a cloud of smoke, the soldier simply continued to scowl up at you as Kyouko walked over with the filled jerry can.

"And what after that? Will you just let me go?" The soldier snorted, shaking his head dismissively. "We both know that you and your American friends won't just let me go."

"And what makes you say that?" You asked as you gestured for Kyouko to stop, your squadmate glaring down at the soldier.

"What makes you say that?" The soldier repeated in a mocking tone, before snorting again. "You are surprisingly stupid for a defector, do you know that? Your parent's must be related."

"Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" You asked as you tapped the burned-out husk from the end of the cigarette, letting the refuse fall to the ground below.

"At least my parents still care about me. I wouldn't be surprised if they have disowned you." The rifleman continued on. You saw what he was trying to do, he was trying to goad either you or Kyouko into killing him which would then deprive you of whatever information he had.

A clever idea now that you though about it. You'd have to remember that one.

[i["Tell me, what do they tell you about us? About the Americans and their allies." You shifted the conversation towards a conversation that would hopefully help you understand him. Though a part of you guessed that it wouldn't help much, this guy struck you as a complete and utter dick.

"That you are all a bunch of rapists, murderers and sadists. That if you foreign devils take our lands than you will rape the women, pillage our towns and cities, and poison the earth. And it seems that they were right on all counts." The soldier explained with a growl, as if the idea of Japan being occupied by a foreign power was poison in his mouth.

"As much as you want to believe it, my unit doesn't follow the same rules and standing orders as the the rest of the US military. Americans aren't the type to pillage and raid those that it invades. Unlike your army, which does that to those that you invade. Tell me, why does your government frame the Americans as the foreign devils who would simply do the same as your military, wouldn't that make your army just as bad as them?" You explained as you finished off the cigarette, letting it burn down to the butt, before dropping it to the ground. You quickly picked out another one from the pack and lit it, chomping down on the bitter butt of the cigarette.

"It is a blight upon the Army's honour, and I shall admit that there is a problem. Yet foreign militaries have done nothing to inspire faith in them. The British were especially brutal to their colonies. Forced relocation of the original inhabitants, genocide and general poor treatment to name just a few. And don't get me started on the Reich. They may act like the nice side but their speeches about non-Aryans say otherwise. Why should we treat the Americans as any different to the British, the Germans and the French?"" The soldier replied, slightly surprising you with his ability to actually reason.

"As my uncle once said, if you paint a picture with a wide brush, it shall be inferior to a picture painted with a number of smaller brushes. Likewise, if you view many different people with a wide brush, you shall never see as much as a more particular person. Do you understand the point in that saying?" You stated as lent up against a tree.

"I see what you're saying, but considering that you simply jump to torture and brutality, you really aren't doing anything to disprove the view that the Americans are brutish monsters." The soldier explained before simply shaking his head at you with a disparaging look.

"Needs must I'm afraid. We don't have the facilities for a more... humane way of getting information. If we had a better way then we would have taken it." You explained sincerely, before taking another puff from the cigarette.

"Well, how about this, if you release my squadmates, I will come willingly as your prisoner. You have my word, by my honour that I will not escape." The rifleman offered, staring you in the eye with a resolve that hand't been there before.

>"Deal, you have my word that they will go free."

"What can you offer us to make this worthwhile? What information do you have?" You asked as you tossed the idea around in your head. At face value however, this was a bad deal.

"I know where you can find key army units. Tank teams, chemical weapons, raiding units. I can point you in the right direction." The soldier insisted confidently. The pair of you stared at each other for a few seconds, before you spoke again.

"And what makes you think that your sergeant won't have the same information for us?" You asked, before taking another puff from your cigarette.

"He has only just transferred out here. He's new, and his head is still full of uncompromising loyalty to the emperor. Even if he had information for you, he wouldn't tell you anything. His dedication to honour demands it. Unlike him, I am flexible enough to deal with people while still being honourable enough to be true to my word. Provided that you do the same. Additionally, I've been out here for years, I know a great amount of information." The soldier explained calmly, before cocking his head towards the truck. "You can keep the truck too, provided that they remain in uniform they should be picked up by any passing patrol."

"Give me a bit of time to talk it over with my comrades." You decided, before gesturing for Kyouko to stand down. Your squad mate giving you a confused look, but put the full jerry can down regardless.

"Logan!" You called out to the only member of your squad who wasn't immediately present, still standing guard behind the truck. "Knock the prisoners out and get over here, we need to talk."

Logan nodded at you and silently entered the truck. And a few seconds later, he climbed back out, his work apparently done.

"So, what did he tell you?" Kyouko asked as Logan walked over, raising her voice enough that Logan could hear her as he approached.

"Apparently he's been out here for a while, and knows where we can find enemy tank squads and chemical weapons units. He's willing to provide us with all the information he knows, provided that his squadmates go free." You explained, matching Kyouko's tone as Logan approached.

"That's a shit idea. We can't let the Japs know that we're here and he wants us to let his people go?" Kyouko asked rhetorically as Logan joined your little group.

"Not to mention that we loose whatever information that they may have." Logan stated, before cocking his head back towards the truck. Where the unconscious prisoners lay.

"According to the prisoner, those two may not know anything. Apparently the sergeant had just transferred out here, and the other prisoner broke too quickly to be anything but a new soldier." You explained further, earning you a nod from both Kyouko and Logan.

"That is very true, it takes a very new officer to lecture his men in the field, where enemies may be lying in wait to ambush them." Kyouko agreed with a nod, before glancing down at the prisoner and scowling.

"Regardless, we're not here to hunt down tanks. We're here to find out what's happening to those civilians." Logan stated as a matter of fact, which you nodded in agreement with.

"That may be true, but he has said that he knows where chemical weapons teams are deployed. We may find some clue among those units." Kyouko reasoned as she folded her arms and starred off into the distance, deep in thought.

"But it only takes one survivor to give them detailed information about us. Our strength, our equipment, our fighting style. We may just compromise the mission if we let anyone live." You pointed out with a sigh, while you didn't like poking holes in n otherwise good idea., you didn't want your squad mates making a decision without all of the pros and cons laid bare before them.

"Now that you've explained it a bit more, it seems like a good deal. But the negatives are just too great to justify us taking the deal." Kyouko decided with a sigh, she shook her head with reluctant dismissal.

"I'm not so sure that it would be so bad. As far as the IJA are concerned, one of their patrols got attacked and the two survivors blaming the attack on a Japanese woman and a German man who both fight with magic. They would just pass it over as the two survivors suffering from stress induced insanity, brought about by said engagement being too brutal for the relatively new soldiers to cope with." Logan reasoned however, and while that scenario was a very real possibility. The chances of it actually coming to pass were too low for you.

A heavy silence fell across the squad as you all pondered the choice before you. The weight of both the pros and the cons balancing the proverbial scales. Though it seemed like a decent idea, something was off here. There was an important question that needed to be asked. And after a few seconds, you managed to put your finger on it.

"What do you get out of this deal?" You asked the infantryman, turning your gaze to the man at your feet. For his credit, the man had apparently suspected this, and you didn't have to wait for an answer.

"Because my squadmates do not deserve to die. They are new to this war after all. The man you took first, he used to be an architect. He has a family that I would not want this war to rob him from. Whereas the sergeant is still a young man, he has much to learn not just about war, but about life. It would be cruel to cut their lives short over something so trivial. Especially when they would not be able to provide anything meaningful." The rifleman explained calmly, his face set firm. You had been taught to find this during your OSS interrogation training. The sudden hardening of a prisoner's expression was a telltale sign of them attempting to lie.

"I know that you're lying. So hurry up and tell me the real reason why you are so willing to work with us." You demanded, before resting your hand on your holstered luger. The leather of the holster creaking under the pressure. You enjoyed the surprised look cross over the prisoner's face, before he gave a resigned sigh.

"It pains me to say this, but I need you to a degree. Ever since the first victories of the war the Army has become more and more disillusioned to the honour that they trumpet. They now believe that the people that they conquer are inferior to them, and as such they treat them as less than human. The Chinese are unable to make the breakthrough that they need in order to beat some humility into the fools in command. Having seen what two of you were able to do, I'm confident that you will be able to cause significant damage." The prisoner reluctantly admitted, his plan to try and manipulate your team into his bidding coming undone.

"Speaking from personal experience?" You asked almost casually as you finished off the remains of your cigarette. Instead leaving the open pack in your pocket instead of burning through a 3rd.

"Unfortunately, yes. And there is no honour in gas bombs, flamethrowers or being so brutal to local civilians. Burning alive is not an honourable way to die, and neither is bleeding to death as your organs liquefy. There is no honour to be gained from raping local women, only honour to be lost." The soldier spat angrily, his voice dropping to a low growl as he explained his need for your team.

"That explains it, he has a vendetta." You stated suddenly to your unit, grabbing their attention from their pondering.

"What?" Kyouko asked, dumbfounded.

"Apparently he has major issues with the army right now. According to him they're being dishonourable by abusing local women and using inhumane weapons like flamethrowers and chemical weapons. He was planning on using us to exact revenge." You explained calmly, earning dour expressions from both of your squad mates.

"What a manipulative little shit, can we be sure that he was being honest when he stated that he had information?" Logan rumbled angrily as he glared down at the Japanese solider. A look of murder in your friend's eyes.

"Maybe, maybe not. But it wouldn't make sense for him to lie to us. Both of our goals are the same right now." Kyouko reasoned as she held up a hand to stop Logan. "I don't like this any more than you do. But I don't think that attacking him is a good idea should we want to take this deal of his."

>Take the deal and pray that this gets passed over by the Japanese Army.
>Decline the deal, the risks are just too great.
>Sit on the deal for a bit while you interrogate the sergeant.

You didn't like it when someone tried to manipulate you. And you especially didn't like letting people who compromise the mission go free when they could potentially leak sensitive information. But in this circumstance, you had to bite the bullet and let them go. Hopefully they wouldn't be believed by their peers.

"Logan, help me get the prisoner back into the truck. Kyouko, get into the drivers seat and get us back to the road. We're burning daylight here and we have a schedule to meet." You ordered, as you took your hand off your luger, and lent down to pick up the restrained prisoner. Both Kyouko and Logan fixing you with a stare, before nodding.

"I hope you know what you're doing. I don't fancy getting sent to my doom because of some slant-eyed prick." Logan warned as Kyouko jogged back to the truck. The spry red-head managing to cover half the distance by the time that you and Logan had picked the confused prisoner up.

"I'm sure. And isn't the the term slant eyes a bit mean towards Kyouko?" You answered as the pair of you reached the truck. You quickly shoved the prisoner inside, before hauling yourself in.

"She's part European, and as such doesn't have slant eyes." Logan reasoned as he shut the bed door. You decided not to comment on his reasoning as the truck moved off, the lumbering vehicle making surprisingly good progress as Kyouko retraced her path out of the forest.

A few minutes later, your vehicle finally turned back onto the dirt road that you had been following on-route to the OSS encampment. As soon as you had turned onto the road, Kyouko stopped the truck to let you remove the unconcious pair of prisoners. Logan kept the bed door down so that the rifleman could watch as you dropped off his friends and untied them, leaving them unconscious on the side of the road. And less than a minute after you had stopped to drop the sergeant an the machine gunner off, your truck sped off. Leaving the unconscious soldiers behind as you sped off towards your first order of business.

The OSS base, and it's Chinese contacts awaited you.

Anyways, if you have any questions then feel free to ask them and I will answer them as best I can.
