You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

After a very enjoyable night dining on Manticore flesh, which was surprisingly rich in taste, you had all turned in for the night, the plan being to return to Eisenwand in the morning.

As usual, you opted to sleep outside, to give your party members more space in the tent and you didn't really feel comfortable sleeping among four girls. Plus, your armor was suitable protection against the elements anyways, and the weather was fair.

Which was why it was such a huge surprise when it turned out that someone had joined you...

You wake up as the early morning light of Sol filters through your helmet slits. You turn your head and see Morgan cuddled up to you like a puppy, her cloak covering the both of you like a makeshift blanket.

Romulus was also present, snuggled up between the both of you and snoring softly, occasionally twitching and kicking at something in his dreams.

Obviously, this was not an advantageous position. The others would be waking up soon and it didn't look like Morgan would be. You were trained for many situations but this was clearly not one of them.

Well, you guess it doesn't matter if the others see you like this. You continue to lie with Morgan while Nino and Naru exit the tent, Naru rubbing the sleep out of her eyes while Nino yawns loudly.

At the same time, Niko returns, obviously from her turn on night watch.

"...oh. I didn't think you'd get to that stage so quickly. Naru mumbles, still half asleep.

"WAAAAAAH!" Nino wails. "Romulus you traitoooooooor!

"Dohoho..." Niko snickers mischievously, not saying anything else.

Morgan mumbles something under her breath as she shifts around, still fast asleep.

You pat Morgan on the head, making sure to rub your hand over her ears for extra measure.

Morgan immediately shoots up, her ears in alert mode as she looks around, trying to regain her bearings.

"O-oh! I'm so sorry I overslept!" Morgan's race is crimson red as she realizes where she is. "This is so embarrassing..."

"Yep, that's totally the thing you're embarrassed about." Niko giggles.

"Nnnnnn, come on, you should help pack up the camp gear!" Nino, still pouting, grabs Morgan by the arm and drags her off. Looks like the little one was learning jealously.

"So, you wanna take next patrol?" Niko asks as she stretches her arms. "Then again, I can cover for ya just this once if you wanna stick around..."

You squint our eyes at Niko, trying to discern her intentions.

You pick up your halberd. Niko deserved some rest, so you weren't going to make her go out again.

"Heh, sure thing, then!" Niko grins and pats you on the shoulder before moving over to pester Naru, who was already heating up a pan over the fire.

Romulus yips as he comes to follow you. You notice that after some time (and copious amounts of food), the direwolf pup had grown considerably in size. Still on the small size, not even close to the size of a normal dog, but definitely large enough to start putting his hunting instincts to practice.

Romulus stands there, panting loudly as his tail wags furiously.

While you have to be wary of your steps, Romulus moves through the terrain effortlessly like a stream of water, reminding you greatly of how Morgan moved,

On the bright side, his enhanced senses would mean that you would get an advance warning of any potential threats.

Romulus then barks and rushes forward, circling around a small hole in the ground. From the way rocks were stacked around the opening to hide it from plain view, and you were certain that it was another kobold burrow.

Romulus growls as he gazes at the hole. No doubt he could smell the kobolds hiding within.

Well, it wasn't as if they were a present threat right now. You could just use the rocks to block off the entrance to keep them from ambushing you later. Then again, perhaps this was a good time to give Romulus some more proper training...

You suppose sending Romulus down the hole was still a bit too dangerous for him, so you instead to do something a bit simpler. You reach into your belt and pull out a small pouch. You light it with a match so the pouch and the powder within begins to burn and smolder and drop it into the hole. With any luck, the foul smell the powder generates will force the kobolds out, either through this hole or a backup one.

And sure enough, Romulus' ears perk up from the sound of clattering rocks. You turn to see a pair of kobolds bolt out of another hidden hole, scrambling for safety in the rocks higher up the mountain. One looked to be larger and stronger. A more worthy opponent, while the other was smaller and scrawnier. Easier prey that wouldn't put up much of a fight.

Romulus growls and crouches down, ready to break out in a full sprint..

You point to the smaller, weaker kobold, and Romulus immediately understands and bolts off like a bolt of white lightning, easily closing the distance and taking down the kobold in one flying lunge. You jog up to the site and could see Romulus holding the kobold down, it's jaws clamped tight around its neck. However, Romulus doesn't close his jaws fully, only exerting enough pressure to keep the kobold from slipping out of his grasp.

The kobold, meanwhile, shrieks and struggles, but can't hope to prevail against the direwolf.

Romulus' eyes look up to you, obviously looking for direction.

You nod to Romulus, who clamps his jaw down tighter and twists. The kobold shrieks for a split second before its neck is snapped. Romulus then sits next to the downed prey, panting with a bloodsoaked mouth, tail wagging, wondering if he had pleased his master.

You pat Romulus on the head. He was a good boy. He gives a happy bark back in response.

And already, you could catch the faint smell of cooked meat wafting through the wind. Perhaps it was time to return to camp. You turn to glance at the kobold.

And with that, you begin your trek back to the camp, Romulus trotting alongside you, still in high spirits.

You return to camp without any issues, and you see that the others have already started on breakfast. Naru is passing around manticore bacon as well as some freshly cooked eggs. Romulus immediately abandons you and trots up to Nino, rubbing against her and giving her the puppy eyes.

You suppose that when it came to food, Romulus truly had no shame.

"Oh, went and bagged yourself a kobold, huh?" Naru observes.

You nod and set the corpse down.

"Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but there's really nothing intrinsically valuable about kobolds." Naru sighs. "But, eh, maybe it's carrying some trinkets we can hock at the market. Go on and grab some food."

Naru walks over to the kobold to inspect it while you walk over to the campfire.

"So this is a true Frontier breakfast, huh?" Niko smiles as she bites into a strip of bacon. "Far richer than what they serve back home!"

"What DO people in the Orient eat for breakfast?" Nino asks curiously as she casually pushes Romulus' head away from her plate.

"Mmmm, mostly just rice and fish." Niko shrugs. "Kinda boring when you think about it."

"Well, don't get used to it." Morgan cautions. "We're just really lucky we got a very big and fresh kill. We're not always going to be that luck in the wilds."

"Yeah, I understand. Wilderness survival and all that." Niko shrugs.

Morgan narrows her eyes and frowns. Seems like she didn't appreciate how lightly Niko was taking things.

The trek down the mountain was just uneventful as the trip up. Seemed like there wasn't anything out here too threatening apart from the Manticore, or perhaps everything was avoiding you. Just as well, since you had to deal with the rough terrain to get down.

Soon enough, you can see Eisenwand on the horizon, and the road forks, one leading to the city, and the other to Monastery. Perhaps you could head to the city to ask around about the Manticore venom in your possession, or maybe you should head to the Monastery first. After all, it was a long trek back from the mountains.

Then again, you could always go to the city on your own and let the others rest at the Monastery.

"Going to go well off that venom?" Morgan narrows her eyes and gazes as the city skyline. "You sure it's okay for you to go there alone?"

You shrug. Things should have calmed down by now, right?

"I don't really feel comfortable with you going out there alone." Morgan sighs. "You should at least take one of us along to back you up."

Well, she wasn't wrong, but you didn't want to tire any of them out further either...

You nod to Naru.

"What? Me? Really?" Naru blinks.

You nod and point to her money pouch. She was obviously the best out of the group when it came to bargaining and getting the best deal.

"Huh, well, I suppose you're right." Naru nods.

"I'll get the others to the Monastery then." Morgan sighs, sounding slightly disappointed. "Don't take too long."

You wave her farewell as your groups part ways. You and Naru heading for the city while Morgan, Niko, and Nino head for the Monastery.

"So, where do you want to head to first?" Naru asks. "I guess we can ask around the market to see what we can trade for it, though I know the Mages would love this shit for their potions, and the Templars are always looking for potent venom to study. Might get something neat out of them."

You pause and think for a moment. The Market would be a good place to find high quality weapons and armor. The Mages most certainly would have powerful magical spells and enchanted equipment. And the Templars would have miracles of Sol.

You point towards the crystalline Tower. Enchanted gear was rare to come across. Perhaps they'd have something offer you?

"Well, I guess it works out." Naru shrugs. "Let's go, then."

The pair of you start making your way to the Tower, crossing through the various layers of the city as you head for the center. At least to your eyes, the little "incident" that occurred when you were last here had been completely forgotten. Nobody pays you a second look besides to typical wariness of Templars, and the City Guards looked rather relaxed and not on alert.

Naru follows your lead, keep a very vigilant eye on her purse. Typical priorities for her.

Fortunately, you reach the front gates of the Tower without incident, but now you're faced by a new obstacle.

Well, more accurate to say two very familiar obstacles.

"Templar!" Caroline sputters when she sees you.

"I see you've returned." Justine comments calmly. "I hope you're here on official business?"

"Yeah, we're here to see if your boss is willing to trade." Naru grunts. "You two squirts gonna let us through?"

"Well, there's no reason not to-"

"Hey, wait a minute!" Caroline yelps, interrupting her twin. "We still haven't had a proper rematch against the Templar, right?"

"This doesn't seem to be the proper time or place..." Justine cautions.

"Just a quick one!" Caroline whines.

Well, these two were the same as ever.

"Oh shit, are we really doing this?" Naru groans.

"Awesome!" Caroline grins as she readies her baton.

"Oh dear, I hope this will finish before the Archmagus notices." Justine shakes her head in exasperation.

"You are NOT getting any heals for this." Naru grumbles.

Caroline gets the first hit in, dashing forward and striking you square in the chestplate with her baton. There's a loud CLANG and the impact feels like getting hit by a charging bull, knocking you back. Was Caroline enhancing her strength somehow?

Whatever way you spun this, you were not in a good position. Caroline's hit had seriously winded you, and you weren't sure you could keep up with her in this condition. However, perhaps this would make her overconfident enough for you to exploit...

Caroline lunges in with inhuman speed, bloodlust in her eyes.

However, that same bloodlust that powered her moves also proved to be her undoing. You were already prepared for her attack, and now that she's committed herself and overextended, you sidestep her lunge, grab her outstretched arm, drop your halberd, and prepare to strike Caroline in the face.

Caroline yelps and closes her eyes to brace for the impact. But it never comes.

You just give her a simple headpat and a thumbs up. She's certainly improved the last time you saw her.

"W-well I'm gonna get better than you! You'll see!" Caroline assures you.

"I apologize deeply for my sister's petulant behavior." Justine bows her head to you. You just take the opportunity to pat it as well. Justine makes no overt reaction, but you can feel her body tense at your contact.

"C'mon, quit hitting on the kids. We're burning daylight here." Naru grunts as she walks through the front gate and towards the portal at the base of the Tower. "This thing leads to the Archmagus, right?"

"It does now." Justine confirms.

"C'mon!" Naru says as she steps through.

You give Justine and Caroline one last respectful nod before following her through.

"Ah, so the Templar returns bearing gifts!" Archmagus Elias says happily as you materialize in his office. "Ah yes, Manticore venom has quite a few important applications. It was good of you to approach us first!"

"Yeah, yeah. Just tell us what you're offering for it." Naru glares at the caster. "And none of that underhanded shit where you just palm of cursed items without telling us."

"Please, we're not some mere two-bit con artists." Elias sighs.

"Not all the time, at least." Naru scowls. "So what have you got?"

ELEMENTAL ENCHANTMENT: A high level enchantment to any single weapon. Elemental enchantments grant even mundane weapons special properties that make them even more effective in combat.

ARCANE WARD: A special magical item that significantly increases the wearer's perception, allowing them to sense the presence of not only living creatures, but areas of high magical activity as well.

FORTRESS SHROUD: A highly valued relic in the Mage's possession. While in normal circumstances this cloak behaves like a very high quality piece of clothing, when magical energy is injected into it, the cloak will harden into any shape with a resilience that exceeds skill. A helpful item for particularly the particularly soft skinned Mages.
